High purity (99,95) Ni-51 wt pct cr eutectic alloy was unidirectionalty solidified at rates of 0.1 to 8 in. per hr. The resulting material was characterized by large grains, approximately 0.5 mm in cross section and extending through almost the entire length of the specimen, parallel to the growth axis. In this investigation we have evaluated the mechanical properties of the unidirectionally solidified fec-bec eutectic Ni-Cr. THE solubility of gases in metals has been of interest since Graham's time in 1866, but, although the subject was actively studied by iron and steel metallurgists during the eighties, the era of painstaking laboratory investigation begins in 1907 with the publication of Sieverts'1 thesis on the occlusion and diffusion of gases in metals. Since then, Sieverts has worked almost continuously in this field, and his views on the subject are the prevailing ones at the present time.2 Probably the most important result obtained by Sieverts, and frequently verified since by other observers, is the discovery that at a constant temperature the solubility of almost all gases in both the liquid and solid state of most of the metals is proportional to the square root of the pressure (for pressure above 100 mm.). The obvious explanation of this fact is that the gas dissolves as atoms and not as molecules, although it has been pointed out a number of times, first by Donnan and Shawl in connection with their work on the solubility of oxygen in silver at 1075° C., that the formation and solution of a compound of the metal and gas would also be indicated by a variation of the solubility with the square or higher root of the pressure. Sieverts4 himself raised the question whether the usual explanation (i. e., that the gas dissolves as atoms) may not be wrong, when he found that the square root law held also for the solubility of sulfur dioxide in molten copper; in which case dissociation into simpler molecules or atoms does not take place. Barite, or barytes as it is sometimes called, belongs to one of the lesser groups of nonmetallic minerals, of which 15 to 20 varieties are mined in California in amounts varying in value from a few hundred to almost half a million dollars annually. Commercial production of barite in California, according to the records of the State Mining Bureau (now Division of Mines), began in the year 1910 with shipments totaling 860 tons, valued at $5640 f.0.b. rail shipping point. With the exception of the years 1924 and 1925, when no shipments were made, the output has varied, reaching a maximum of 17,993 tons, worth $90,617, in 1927. The 1928 output was 13,406 tons, worth $55,888 f.0.b. rail shipping point, bringing the state total to the end of 1928 to 59,972 tons, valued at $313,930. Consumption of BaRitE in United States Crude barite sold or used by producers in the United States for the year 1927 amounted to 248,219 tons, valued at $1,594,423, according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines.l In addition, there was imported, principally from Germany, a total of 70,274 tons, valued at $253,284. Manufactured products from these tonnages combined were distributed in 1927 (the latest year for which figures are at present available) as follows: ground barite, 57,658 tons; lithopone, 174,083 tons; barium chemicals (including carbonate, 4,960 tons; chloride, 3,541 tons; binoxide and sulfate or blanc Jixe combined, 13,354 tons). Missouri accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the domestic crude barite, followed by Georgia and Tennessee, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Nevada, South Carolina, and Virginia. At the Washoe smelter, Anaconda, Mont., the blister-copper from the converters is transferred, by means of a crane, to a re-fining-furnace, in which it is brought to proper pitch by means of air and poles. From this furnace the refined copper, containing gold and silver, is poured into cast-iron molds placed on a platform-convejor, giving an anode 36.75 in. long, 35 in. wide, and 2 1/16 in. thick. By reason of a disagreement between the smelter and the refinery, in reference to the silver-content of the anodes, it becanle necessary to investigate the methods of sampling used. 11. SMelter Method of SampliNg. At the smelter the sampling is done by " shotting " into water a small portion of the molten stream of copper as it flows from the furnace, by " batting " the stream'with a wooden paddle. The first sample is taken 30 min. after the pouring i.: started, three other samples being taken at 1-hr. interrals, each sample Weighing from 4 to 6 oz. The samples are dried, esamined for particles of burnt wood, screened on a 10-mesh screen of NO. 8 wire to remove the fines, the oversize then screened on a 4-mesh screen of No. 20 wire to remore the coarse, the undersize of this screen being taken as the sample. The four portions thus obtained are thoroughly mixed and split in half by passing over a 16-slot splitting-device, slots being 0.5 in. wide. In addition to the alloys of copper with iron previously found by Hanson and Ford to show an increase in the concentration of the alpha range with increase in temperature the following binary and ternary systems have been found by the author to exhibit: the same feature: (a) Copper-chromium. (b) Copper-cobalt. (c) Copper-silicon. (d) Copper-nickel-silicon and its pseudo-binary section Cu-Ni2Si (formula of compound definitely established). (e) Copper-cobalt-silicon and its pseudo-binary section Cu-Co2Si (formula of compound established with some probability but not as definitely as for Ni2Si). (f) Copper-chromium-silicon; formation of a compound definitely established (compare Figs. 1 and 2). The formula of this compound may be either Cr2Si or Cr3Si. (g) Copper-iron-silicon; presence of a phase containing both iron and silicon established in an indirect way only. No definite microconstituents observed. 2. RANGES OF SOLID SOLUBILITY (percentage at various tempera¬tures). (a) For copper-chromium: 0.8 at 1000° C.; 0.5 at 900° C.; 0.25 at 800° C.; 0.05 to 0.1 at 500° C. "Power is transmitted to Butte, a distance of 130 miles, over two separate lines running parallel on the same right of way.The transmission line embodies the most approved ideas in construction. The conductors are No. O. B. & S. gauge, hard drawn copper strand. The insulators are of the suspension type, each insulator consisting of six units, 10 inches in diameter. The insulators will stand a wet test of over 300,000 volts, and were selected after long and careful tests by the company's engineers. The wires are carried on steel towers of four-legged, single crossarm type, manufactured by Milliken Bros. The three conductors are suspended in a horizontal row from the crossarm, and there are no transpositions in either line. Above the power wires and symmetrically located are two galvanized steel strands, Vs-inch in diameter, grounded at each tower, which serve as a protection against lightning.The distance between towers in level country is 600 feet. In mountainous country, however, the spans are irregular in length and spans of 1,500 or 2,000 feet are common. The longest one in the line is that crossing- the Missouri River and is equal to 3,034 feet. The length of this span is such that a person standing at one end of it can sec the wires go off and vanish into space, while the tower at the other end is barely visible to the naked eye on a clear day. The site selected for the United States prototype pumped storage project of Union Electric CO. was Proffit Mountain, five miles from Taum Sauk, the highest point in Missouri. Factors influencing final location were: high local relief; satisfactory rock type and structure; and an economic location in respect to existing transmission systems. The upper reservoir was constructed by excavating rhyolite porphyry from the crest of Proffit Mountain and constructing a rock fill dike encircling the area to form a 4350-acre foot reservoir. A 6564-ft tunnel connects the upper reservoir with the generating and pumping facilities. A concrete gravity dam on the East Fork of the Black River forms the 6350-acre foot lower reservoir. Precambrian rhyolite porphyry forms the crest of Proffit Mountain and the floor of the upper reservoir. The tunnel was excavated in rhyolite prophpy, granite porphyry, dolomite, shales and conglomerate. Abutments and the foundation of the gravity dam are in rhyolite porphyry, and much of the valley floor of the lower reservoir is underlain by dolomite and shale. Core drilling provided data on soundness of rock type, structure, depth of weathered zone and potential water loss in the fractured igneous rocks. After a six-year study of pumped storage and cost comparison with alternate stream generating units, the Taum Sauk pumped storage project was authorized by Union Electric Co. on Dec. 11, 1959.' The site selected is located in the St. Francois Mountains of southeast Missouri approximately 90 miles south of St. Louis (Fig. 1). The lower reservoir was provided by damming the East Fork of the Black River, a small tributary of the Black River with a minimum flow of about 1 sec ft. Construction of the upper reservoir was effected by quarrying the crest of Proffit Mountain - five miles from Taum Sauk Mountain, the highest point in Missouri — to provide material for a rock fill dike surrounding the quarried area. This provided a 55-acre mountain top lake with a water depth of 92 ft (Fig. 2). A vertical shaft and tunnel connect the upper and lower reservoirs through the two reversible pump-turbine motor-generator units operating under 800 ft of hydraulic head (Fig. 3). The output rating of the plant is 350,000 kw with daytime generation of about 2.2 million kw-hr under normal use. Night pumping will replenish water to the upper reservoir in about 91/2 hours3. The automatic operation is remotely controlled from the Osage plant and from the dispatchers office in St. Louis. GENERAL GEOLOGY Mountains of the St. Francois area consist of Precambrian granites, granite porphyries, extrusive fel-sites and basic dikes. Basal conglomerates overlain by Upper Cambrian Bonneterre dolomites and shales onlap the exhumed Precambrian knobs and hills and are exposed in the narrow valleys. Cambrian and Ordovician residuum as much as 200 ft thick is present on the slopes of many hills. Proffit Mountain consists of rhyolite porphyry and granite porphyry. All excavation for the upper reservoir was in rhyolite porphyry, and the same rock is present under the Bonneterre at the plant site and under alluvium at the lower reservoir dam site. The region has been dissected to the stage of early maturity with only small upland flats remaining. Considerable local relief (a requisite for the project) approaches 1000 ft. Streams flowing across the Precambrian ridges have formed restricted narrows, termed shut-ins. A shut-in approximately two miles downstream from the plant site provides an excellent site for the lower reservoir dam. TEST BORINGS Preliminary to final approval of the project, 12 test borings were made to determine subsurface geologic conditions (Fig. 2). Drill hole No. 12 at the lower reservoir dam site showed 20 ft of alluvium over solid rhyolite porphyry. Drill holes No. 1, 2 and 3 were drilled in the tail race area to depths of 66 ft, 75 ft and 95 ft respectively, and all bottomed in Bonneterre. Emphasis on publications related to coal mining subsidence and damages is appropriate at present in view of the energy crisis and increased coal production and public alertness. I have worked in Harrisburg with the state government Public Utilities Commission on energy-fuel matters and issues (Parate, 1978-80). I have participated in the communication on subsidence/ damage reviews and status with the Bureau of Mines Liasion Office (Kebblish, 1978-79). I have done research (Parate, 1965) and published papers (Parate, 1972; Parate, 1967) in Britain on coal mining subsidence and damages around Sheffield-Nottinghamshire coal fields. I have a few comments on the recent paper titled, "Pennsylvania Subsidence Control Guidelines," by C.J. Bise. 1) What is the basis of the empirical formula or guideline, LD _ (0.27 x D) ± 4.6, defining the support area? 2) The particular structure may not be damaged due to vertical uniform displacement caused by mining beneath unless the displacement is differential (King, 1964). 3) The author mentions the limited subsidence research in the US, and quite rightly so. But he fails to quote any work reference by continental investigators except the British or review work by the US. What are the reasons? 4) The author has not mentioned the importance and role of angle of draw for Pennsylvania, Kentucky, or Illinois coal fields. Is there any current research investigation on the relationship between subsidence research investigation, damage, and transference of strains to structures? There have been a number of newspaper reports on subsidence damage in Wilkesbarre and other areas in Pennsylvania. Is the author aware of such instances and traditional attitudes to such issues? Many times government agencies--due to lack of funds, technical expertise, and public policies--are unable or do not find it interesting to keep updates on these issues, as per the author's knowledge and experience with state governments. 5) What is the net effect and role of the D.E.R. Insurance Office on the monitoring, reducing, or controlling subsidence damage, particularly in Pennsylvania?

The sheet-ground deposits of the Tri-State district, because they are fairly uniform in thickness (7 to II ft.)—rather flat, with an easy dip to the west—and cover a large acreage, offered a problem of improved transportation. Heading advance in this kind of mine is very rapid and track haulage requires a larger crew of trackmen than do other mines, and a heavy investment in track. The use of some type of rubber-tired truck equipment for underground haulage was under consideration for some time by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The nature of some ore bodies made them not adaptable to truck haulage and some mines that did offer possibilities were equipped with other types of haulage, and the expected savings by the use of trucks did not offset the loss of investment that would be incurred in discarding other equipment. The decision was made to sink a new shaft, designed for skip hoisting, on the Blue Goose ore body, and then develop truck equipment. Developing Tractors and Trailers A study was made of internal-combustion engines for power units in the tractors, but the extreme difficulty of controlling air circulation, and the heavy cost of drilling large churn drill holes for blower installations, led to the adoption of a tractor with a storage battery. The storage-battery tractor that was on the market for mine haulage was impossible to obtain because all were needed for defense work. Several standard electric-truck chassis were purchased and rebuilt in the Eagle-Picher shops. The steering wheel was shortened and set vertical, permitting the driver's seat to be moved forward, and the frame was shortened enough to take the battery box and the fifth wheel support that carried the gooseneck of the dump trailer. The fifth wheel, or turntable, is of the ball and socket type. Tig. I shows the ball fastened to the gooseneck. The socket is split to permit introduction of the ball and is held by through-bolts, and the socket is welded to a ½-in. plate, which in turn is attached to the tractor frame. Smaller wheels and tires were put on to reduce over-all height. If it had been necessary, the spring: could have been reversed, or taken off entirely, to gain additional clearance. The tractors are equipped with 48-cell, 23-plate, 400-A.H. batteries. With the initial tonnage and mileage, the batteries were about 50 per cent down at the end of a shift. Tractors have truck tires 7.50 by 20, 8-ply, front and rear, the rear being dud. After four months of use, the .tires are beginning to show signs of failure.* In

MORE years ago than I care to admit I conferred the title of "combustion engineer? upon my-self since nobody else would confer it. I thought at the time, and for some, years thereafter, that my field was limited to the precincts where the fuel was being burned, but I found that I could stand in the door of the furnace room and hear distressed heat units calling for help all over the plant. Some of them were over-worked, others were compelled to do useless work, and still others, anxious to render a proper account of themselves, were not permitted to do any sort of work at all and were utterly wasted. The combustion engineer has something to do at that interesting occasion when the heat unit is being born in the furnace, but his responsibility does not end there. He must follow the little fellow throughout the entire period of its hectic existence in the plant and see that it gets a fair chance and a square deal everywhere. I fear that the general impression of the combustion engineer's duties is much as mine was in the beginning; that his job is limited to the implements and processes incident to the specific operation of converting fuel into active, heat energy and of applying it to the boiler, the still, or what-not, with the least possible waste. But is it not true that a heat unit saved in a remote corner of the plant means just as much to the fuel account as another saved at the furnace? And if nobody else is looking after the heat units out on the range why should the combustion engineer spend all of his time hanging around the corral? If combustion engineer is not a broad enough title to cover the man in charge of a general heat unit rescue campaign call him any-thing else you please. The job is all that counts. The name means nothing. A skunk by any other name would smell as bad. The greatest field I have ever found for general "heat rescue" work is the oil refinery. In refining we first put heat into the oil and then take it away from the vapor. The greatest heat losses occur during the cooling operation, but there are losses, many of them preventable, either wholly or partly, at every step of the several processes in oil refining.

OF all the qualities that are essential in a good cigar tobacco none is quite so important as the burn. This term is general and includes many points, the most important of which are evenness of burn, color of ash, firmness and coherence of ash, and fire-holding capacity. The fire-holding capacity refers to the length of time the leaf or cigar will continue to, glow after ignition. Chlorides tend to prevent complete combustion and products are formed thereby that are injurious to the flavor and aroma. On the other hand, the carbonates of the alkalies, particularly of potassium, aid the combustion and increase the fire-holding capacity. Barth1 thought that the harmful effect of the chlorides was due to their fusing and coating the tobacco, thereby preventing complete combustion. Schlosing,2 Nessler,3 and Garner,4 suggested widely different theories to account for the favorable action of potassium salts. In order to study carefully the action of the various salts upon the course of combustion of the cigar a knowledge of the temperature of the burning cigar is necessary. Lehmann5 who seems to be the only investigator who has made any attempt to determine the temperature of a burning cigar gives 480° C. as the maximum temperature which he recorded. It is evident, however, that his measurements were in error, probably on account of the method and apparatus used, since the lowest visible red corresponds to a temperature of about 575° C.

Fine powders of lead zirconate titanate have been prepared by three different methods such as ball milling, conventional coprecipitation and spray drying. Different powders have also been prepared by changing the process variables in each method. These powders were analysed for particle size chemical composition and reactivity. DTA, TGA and x-ray analysis have been carried out to study the lead zirconate titanate formation with reference to calcination temperatures. The calcined powders were then consolidated by compaction and sintering. An attempt has bean made to explain the consolidation behaviour of these powders on the basis of powder characteristics.

Societe Miniere & Metallurgique de Penarroya Noyelles-Godault works are located in the northern part of France. The complex includes a lead smelter, a zinc smelter, shops for production of manufactured products and all necessary general services. The zinc smelting complex described in this paper was designed in 1959 to replace an old horizontal retort distillation furnace and was first operated in May 1962. It includes: - a sinter plant producing the zinc sinter for the Imperial Smelting furnace : zinc, lead and bulk zinc-lead concentrates are sintered on a Dwight-Lloyd machine with a working area of 80 sq.m. Cadmium sludges are treated by the wet method in a separate plant for recovery of cadmium. Sulphur dioxide contained in gases goes to a gas washing tower and is subsequently made into sulphuric acid in a plant with a capacity of 550 m.t. per day. - a smelting plant where the process developed by Imperial Smelting Processes Ltd. is applied : the blast furnace which was modified in 1967 has an area of 17.5 sq.m. at the tuyeres level and a section of 24 sq.m. at the top of the shaft. It has a theoretical zinc capacity of 100,000 m.t. per annum. Air blast is heated by means of covers up to the theoretical temperature of 950ºC. Zinc produced is either directly cast into slabs for sale as standard 'good ordinary brand' zinc, or sent to a refining plant where the New Jersey process designed to produce 'special high grade' zinc is in application. Mixes of zinc containing various amounts of lead, cadmium or aluminum are prepared to customer specification in a mixing plant.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE James diagonal-plane slimer is specially adapted to handle the finest slimes, but it will also handle sands as coarse as 40-mesh. The saving efficiency of this machine is due to the original construction of the deck, and to the rapid reciprocating movement imparted to it by the head-motion. The deck consists of a plurality of connected planes, having a certain fixed ratio of inclination one to another. These planes intersect each other diagonally to the stroke-line of the table and are arranged so as to give the pulp on the table a double treatment. This double concentration performed by the diagonal-plane deck produces cleaner concentrates and tailings than those obtained by the operation of two separate machines. The action of the diagonal planes settles, combines, and holds all the concentrates in one compact mass, sharply defined from the gangue, and easily cut away without loss. Many slime-concentrating machines distribute the feed-pulp for a distance of 4 or 5 ft. only, and upon a very limited settling-surface. This results in a thick, heavy deposit, from which it is impossible to stratify the values and wash, away the gangue, the resulting products being dirty concentrates, and tailings carrying high values. The diagonal-plane slimer distributes the feed-pulp for a distance of 10 ft., and upon a settling-surface having an area of 40 sq. ft.; in other words, it spreads the pulp thinly on the table, which allows the metallic values to settle through the gangue quickly, forming a bottom stratum from which the thinly-distributed overlying stratum. of gangue is easily brushed away by the feed-water without disturbing the underlying concentrates. Single crystals of copper and silicon-iron were cold rolled in orientations chosen to produce individually the major components of the poly crystalline deformation texture. The orientation dependence of the recrystallization kinetics was studied relative to the primary recrystallization textures of these specimens. It is not possible to rationalize the poly crystalline re crystallized textures on this basis. The results suggest an important role of the interaction of adjacent crystals during the deformation of aggregates. BRICK and Williamson1 first noted evidence that the recrystallization temperature was different for straight-rolled and cross-rolled copper given comparable reductions. Michalak and Hibbard2 investigated quantitatively the effect of rolling procedure on the kinetics of recrystallization of cold-rolled copper and found that material cold-rolled the same amount by straight-pass, cross-pass, and compression-pass techniques developed different deformation and recrystallization textures, different 1-hr recrystallization temperatures, and different recrystallization kinetics. However, the temperature dependence of the rate of recrystallization was essentially the same for all techniques. Similar results were obtained on iron. Dunn and Koh3 in studying the recrystallization textures of cold-rolled silicon-iron single crystals reported large differences in the annealing temperatures and times required to recrystallize specimens of different orientations cold-rolled the same amount. Liu4 and Liu and Hibbard5 utilized the concept of different recrystallization temperatures for different orientations of cold-rolled crystals to rationalize the difference in recrystallization textures found in various face-centered-cubic metals. Their explanation predicted a significant difference in the recrystallization kinetics of deformed (110) [112] crystals as compared to (358) [352] crystals, and, in fact, Liu4 reported evidence that this difference existed at least qualitatively. Verbraak6 who rolled and recrystallized a series of copper single crystals found that the double (112) [111] rolled orientation is related to recrystallized cube texture formation. The effect of rolling intensity on the relative amount of cube component suggests an important role of recrystallization kinetics. Walter and Hibbard7 while trying to relate the behavior of rolled and recrystallized single crystals of silicon-iron to the behavior of polycrystal-line silicon-iron again noted that differences in recrystallization kinetics were necessary to rationalize their results. The purpose of the present investigation was to obtain quantitative kinetic data on the recrystallization of single crystals of both copper and silicon-iron rolled to initial isolated individual orientations corresponding to those found in the polycrystalline deformation textures. These data might indicate the importance of the deformation orientation, i.e. the range of available nuclei, the deformed matrix orientation into which these nuclei grow, and the orientation dependence of their growth rate during primary recrystallization on this texture. Pollution control will be of utmost importance in the 1970's. In this area, the mineral process engineer has a special competence to understand and remedy many pollution situations. There is an old adage that goes, "Build a better mouse- trap and the world will beat a path to your door." Would that it were so, but the reality of the situation is such that, just as a supplier must sell his machine, a professional man must sell his competence. It is a sad but true fact that mineral processing engineers have not done a very good job in selling their extensive competence in the control of a broad range of pollution problems. Recently one of our students visited a paper pulp mill where he was shown a foam fractionator used to remove paper pulp fibers from plant discharge waters. "Foam fractionator hell, that's a flotation cell!'' was his comment. Ah so, it would appear that large numbers of technical people consider themselves experts on "foam fractionation" Or is it that we have been very remiss in demonstrating the usefulness of our equipment and processes and our professional competence to solve, these pollution problems?

A test is described in which the wellubility of porous rock is measured as a function of the displacement properties of the rock-water-oil system. Four displacemet operations are carried out: (I) sponlaneous displaceti?ent of water by oil, (2) forced displacement of water by oil oil in the same system using a centrifuging procetllrre, (3) spontaneous displacement of oil by water. and (4) forced displacment of oil by water. Ratios of the spontaneous displacement volumes to the total displucenlent volumes are used as wettability indicates. Cores having clean mineral surfaces (strongly preferentially water-wet) show displacement-by-waler ratios approaching 1.00 and displacement-by-oil ratios of zero. INTRODUCTTON Most investigators who have reported on the wettahility of porous rock have described such rock as prcferentially water-wet or preferentially oil-wet. In some cases a third classification, neutral wettability. has been used. The efficiency of water floods in each of these wettability groups has been described in numerous publications. Several methods for characterizing porous rock wet tability more precisely have been reported,' " but it appears that because of one weakness or another. none of these has been generally accepted. Early in our studies in this field, it was found that the displacement efficiency of oil by water in a particular porous rock having a strong preference for water was quite different from that in a similar rock having only a moderate preference for water. Thus, there appeared to be a need for a practical, reasonably precise wet tability test. one which could classify porous rocks into 10 to 20 different groups rather than the two or three broad groups listed above. The test developed to meet this need is described in this paper. Also, changes in wettability, as indicated hy this test, resulting from various core handling procedures are discussed. Finally, data showing the corrclation of wettability with waterflood oil recovery for two different types of cores are presented and discussed. Some confusion has resulted from the failure of certain writers to define clearly some of the wettability terms they have used. Accordingly, the following commcnts concerning definitions are offered. The wc t ta-hility of a solid surface is the relative preference of that surface to be covered by one of the fluids under consideration. It is felt that this is the generally accepted definition. The fluids being considered must bc specified (or understood) before the term wettability has any significance. In the work reported here these fluids are water (3 per cent brine) and oil (kerosene). The term preferential wettability is sometimes used, but we think that the word preferential is redundant here and should not be used. Tn line with the definitions of Jennings', a preferentially oil-wet solid surface is regarded as a surface which will show an oil advancing contact angle less than 90" (measured through the oil) in the water-oil-solid system. Oil will spontaneously displace water, if both are at the same pressure, from such a surface. A preferentially water-wet surface is analogous. This is consistent with the wettability definition above. As Jennings has said, frequently the term oil-wet is used to mean the same thing as preferentially oil-wet. However, oil-wet also has been used occasionally referring to an oil-covered surface when the availability of water was limited. To avoid confusion from this source, we do not use the terms oil-wet and water-wet. The Nature of Geological Inquiry "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere. Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals—that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, gla- ciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves—that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them —indeed, their very existence—are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound kntowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties call be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks.
