Factors which influence the success or failure of a waterflood can seldom be determined in the laboratory. For this reason pilot waterfloods are initiated in a repreventative portion of the oil reservoir in question. For a pilot flood to predict quantitatively the recovery to be expected in a field-wide waterflood operation, the pilot area must behave as though it were confined (surrounded by similar areas). In this study, laboratory fluid-flow models were used to determine the simplest pilot pattern, for particular conditions of mobility ratio and initial gas saturation, that would behave as though it were confined. Pilot patterns studied ranged in complexity from a single inverted five-spot to a grouping of nine regular five-spots. Only the innermost producing well in each pattern was studied. Model results showed that the optimum number of wells in the pattern depends upon the oil-water mobility ratio and the expected oil-bank size. Unfavorable mobility ratios will, in general, require more wells in the pilot pattern than will favorable mobility ratios. Pilot patterns in reservoirs which contain a dispersed, flowable, free gas saturation will require fewer wells than for the under-saturated case. The single inverted five-spot pattern was found to be unsatisfactory for predicting behavior of fully developed waterfloods. In particular, it is possible that, in reservoirs which contain a flowable, dispersed gas phase, the oil bank will never be observed at the producers due to the large amounts of free gas which continue to be produced with the oil. INTRODUCTION One method which has been used to predict the performance of a waterflood is the pilot flood. The pilot waterflood is a flood which involves only a small cluster of the reservoir wells and is located in a small, representative portion of the reservoir. The object is that oil produced from the pilot can, in some way, be related to the oil recovery to be expected from a field-wide expansion of the waterflood. However, these field pilot waterfloods have often been unreliable in the prediction of oil recovery in a fully developed waterflood. This unreliability has also been demonstrated in several laboratory studies of pilot floods. Some of the investigators have shown that there are situations in which the pilot flood oil production is far too optimistic with respect to the oil recovery in the fully de- veloped flood. Others4-G have shown that the pilot results can also be pessimistic, especially if the pilot waterflood is initiated in an oil reservoir which has been depleted by primary recovery and is at very low pressure. The major reason for this unreliability of pilot water-floods is the migration of fluids into or out of the pilot area. By the well-known method of images, if straight lines can be drawn to represent vertical planes of symmetry in a porous medium which contains pressure sources and sinks (injectors and producers), then these lines are invariant streamlines, or lines across which there is no potential gradient, and therefore no flow. In an actual reservoir, these lines of symmetry can never be established exactly because of reservoir inhomogeneities and irregular reservoir boundaries. However, if the reservoir is relatively large and contains wells in repetitive patterns, these lines of symmetry are commonly assumed to exist for the pattern units sufficiently far removed from the reservoir boundary. Lines of symmetry for the five-spot injection pattern are shown in Fig. 1. Each five-spot unit in this figure can be considered confined with respect to flow across its boundary. In pilot floods this is not the case. The lines of symmetry for the pilot patterns investigated in this study are shown in Fig. 2. It is obvious that the fluid within these pilots is not confined and is therefore able to migrate into or out of the pilot area. Intuitively, one can see that, if more wells are added to the pilot, the innermost unit tends to behave more and more like the confined pattern. However, there is a practical limit to the number of wells which should be placed in the pilot. This limit is usually determined by economic factors. It was the purpose of this study to use laboratory fluid-flow models to determine which of the previously mentioned pilot patterns will force the innermost producing well to behave as it would in a fully developed waterflood. Since fluid migration is influenced by initial saturation conditions and the mobility ratio, these factors were included in the study. The ultimate objective of this study was to develop data which would allow the operator to choose a pilot pattern and operating conditions that will yield a production history which can be applied directly as an estimate of the performance of each production well of the fully developed waterflood. BASIS FOR THE STUDY The basic problem of field pilot floods is the migration of the reservoir fluids into or out of the pilot area. This problem has been the subject of previously reported model studies on pilot floods. These studies have been concerned mainly with the development of arbitrary "correction factors" to be applied to the simple, unconfined pilot systems such as the single five-spot. DEFORMATION bands of surprising regularity are found in large-grained polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling (Fig. I). Individual bands frequently are large enough to permit a determination of their orientation by means of etch pits and an optical goniometer. Measurements have been made on 21 areas in seven different grains, and these, combined with X-ray studies of nine single crystals that had been cold-rolled after mounting in a polycrystal-line block, have contributed to a better understanding of the preferred orientations in rolled copper just as similar studies have for rolled iron' and brass.2.3 Particular attention was given to determining orientations that are stable during rolling and to the manner of fragmentation and rotation of unstable grains. The possible role of twinning was also carefully investigated. The texture of polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling is well established by the pole figures that have been plotted by Schmid and Staffelbach,4 Iweronowa and Schdanow,5 and Brick and Williamson,3 all of which are in substantial agreement. There has been some divergence in the list of individual "ideal" orientations that have been used to describe the texture by these observers and others,6 although the orientation (110) [112]-that is, (110) parallel to the rolling plane and [112] parallel to the rolling direction-is generally recognized as the most prominent orientation and (I12) [111] one of the lesser orientations. Other orientations have been given by some observers as (236) [533], (100) [001], and (I 10) [001]. The texture of copper has also been described as (135) [533].6.1 The sum of these orientations provides a reasonable approximation to the complete pole figure, but it does not follow that these specific orientations are necessarily of fundamental significance, for the choice of indices is arbitrary, within limits. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of the ideal orientations in cold-rolled iron discloses continuous ranges of equally favored positions rather than definite positions of high stability,1 and similarly Brick's observations in a single crystal of a brass2 suggest that all orientations in the range between (110) [113] and (110) [117] are about equally stable. MATERIALS AND METHODS The material used was vacuum-cast electrolytic copper kindly supplied by L. L. Wyman, of the General Electric Co.* Slices 1/2 in. thick and 2 1/2 in. square, cut from the ingot, were rolled with 50 per cent reduction per pass to final thicknesses between 0.02 and 0.04 in., and etched to develop cube-face etch pits suitable for goniometric work.8 The etch was light on some strips and deep in others.

WeERTMANI has shown that the high temperature steady state creep rate, i, in lead and indium-base alloys obeys an equation of the form where AH is the activation energy, o the applied stress, n the stress exponent, and R and T have their usual meanings. He observed a variation in n from 4.5 for pure metals to 3 for concentrated alloys, which he interpreted as due to Change in creep mechanism from the climb of dislocations in pure metals to a micro-creep mechanism in the alloys. The Cottrell-Jaswon microcreep mechanism of the moving dislocation taking its impurity atmosphere with it was considered to be the most likely process, although short-range order and the segregation of solute atoms to a stacking fault will also give a stress exponent of 3. Steady state creep has been investigated in a Au - 27 at. pct Cu alloy at temperatures above 1/2 TIM where TIM the absolute melting temperature. As the oxidation resistance of this alloy is excellent all tests were carried out in air with a furnace built to give a temperature variation of less than 1°C along the 60 mm gage length. A lever-arm arrangement applied the stress with a load being adjusted between each creep test to maintain a constant stress. As each test produced less than 0.5 pct creep strain, the variation in stress during the test was negligible. The creep strain was measured by a transducer at the end of one of the alloy-steel grips, with the out of balance potential being finally recorded on a variable speed chart recorder. A typical creep curve is shown in Fig. 1. The results, Fig. 2, confirm that n is nearer to 3 than to 4.5; the creep mechanism could be any of those given above. The activation energy, AH, which is independent of stress, is consistent with a diffusion controlled process; the activation energies for the self-diffusion of gold and for the diffusion of gold into Copper are both -45 kcal per ml., There is now considerable evidence, that, when the steady state creep is dependent upon diffusion, irrespective of the actual creep mechanism, the activation energy is independent of the stress. These restrictions, controls, and taxes are unlikely to disappear entirely after the war has been won, for debts will remain to be paid with a long period of difficult readjustment. Although the new economy will doubtless offer plentiful opportunities for the advantageous use of capital, no investor can ignore the favorable conditions offered by industry in Latin America, where taxes are relatively low and the restrictions on free enterprise comparatively mild. MEXICO embraces one of the great metal and petroleum producing provinces of the world. In this respect its history dates back to the overthrow of the Aztec empire by a Spanish force under Hernando Cortes between 1519 and 1.521. Even before then, its richness in silver and other minerals was not unknown. But it was a treasure house for the Spanish conquerors until the country became independent in 1821. It has been computed that in the 400 years following 1521, Mexico yielded 1.55,000 metric tons of silver, worth $3,000,000,000, two-thirds of the entire world production. In 1935 the country accounted for 36 per cent of the world's silver output, 14 per cent of its antimony (in 1934), 13 per cent of its lead, 3 per cent of its zinc and copper, and 21/2 per cent of its petroleum. Contrary to the impression of some, its gold output is now comparatively small, though important in the past. Its oil, as well, formerly hulked much larger than now, in 1921 being one-fourth of the world output.

IN an earlier paper by Sims, Moore, and Williams: data were given to show that hydrogen contents of 0.3 relative volume (0.00033 wt pct), existing at the center of 4-in.-square cast-steel coupons, could be removed by aging at 400°F for 125 hr. At the end of that time, complete restoration of normal ductility for the steel was obtained. Replicate specimens of the same steel were aged at room temperature up to 555 days or .18 1/2 months. At the end of that time, the hydrogen content at the center had fallen to 0.13 relative volume or 0.00015 wt pet, but there was no perceptible change in the ductility. On the basis of experience with accelerated aging of 1-in. and 4-in. coupons and room temperature aging of 1-in. coupons, it was predicted that, some time after two years and when the hydrogen content has been reduced to about 0.10 relative volume, there would be some recovery of ductility. One set of three bars remained, and these were held for 1310 days, or more than three years. Then tensile test bars were cut from the center, and these bars were sampled for hydrogen analysis at the time they were broken. The sample specimens were cylinders % in. in diam x 1 1/4 in. in length. The data showed that in this time the average hydrogen content had fallen to 0.096 relative volume or 0.00011 wt pct, and the ductility had increased sharply. Elongation had risen from 10 to 17.3 pct, while reduction of area increased from about 16 to 27.5 pct. On the basis of these data, fig. 1 was drawn to replace fig. 15 of the earlier paper. Extrapolation of the curves of fig. 1 indicates that it would require a period of about 2200 days or approximately six years at room tem- perature to reduce the hydrogen to the minimum value and to recover full ductility in the center of the coupons. The aging process apparently involves the movement of hydrogen from the interior to the surface of the bar and evaporation at the surface. This flux of gas presumably follows some diffusion mechanism, and an effort was made to use the aging data, obtained at room temperature and at 400°F, to calcu-late coefficients of diffusion, in the hope that they might indicate the nature of the diffusion. The conclusion was reached. however. that the data were inadequate for such a purpose.

Previous investigations of E. L. Tucker and R. E. Head' related in particular to the effect of cyanogen compounds on galena, sphalerite, and pyrite, and their behavior in the presence of such compounds. The present contribution deals with the floatability of the copper minerals and of pyrite. All experiments were performed on minus 200-mesh material, the method of preparation being the same as that described in the previous article. Flotation tests were made in a small mechanically agitated machine of 50-gm. capacity designed in this laboratory by Gates and Jacobsen.2 General Naval Stores pine oil No. 5 and potassium xanthate were used in constant amount in all of the experiments; these agents were selected because of their present wide use in the flotation of copper minerals. Time additions were varied to secure four final hydrogen ion concentrations, namely, neutral, 0.0005 per cent. CaO, 0.003 per cent. CaO, and 0.02 per cent. CaO. The variation in lime addition was introduced to include the range of alkalinities employed in actual flotation practice. The minerals employed were the purest obtainable. There was optimism on 14th Street on April 22, Earth Day. We only have the report second hand because the demonstration conflicted with another appointment. Fifth Avenue was closed to vehicular traffic from 14th Street to the Park for a few hours and the crowd that showed up to promenade rivaled anything that can be imagined, even one at a country fair in Merry Old England. Certainly the domestic animals were there and the costumes were wild-as they are almost any day on 5th Avenue. However, the mood was friendly, happy and optimistic according to one of our neighbors who filmed and taped interviews with some of the characters. People think the air is going to be clean, and the water pure in the future. Land is going to be treated with respect. Even if the demonstration temporarily fouled the streets with litter, it served the purpose of dramatizing awareness. In talking to our friend about his experiences we didn't miss the opportunity to sound out his impression of whether or not people recognize that no group of people nor industry has a monopoly on pollution.

This paper presents the kinetics of leaching pure wulfenite (PbMoO,) with sodium sulfide solutions. Wulfenite dissolves in the presence of sulfide ion according to the following reaction: PbMoO , + S= PbS + MOO;. Synthetic galena is formed and molybdenum is released to solution as molybdate ion. The reaction follows the shrinking core model and the leaching mechanism involves mixed kinetics where both diffusion and chemical reaction are rate controlling. Molybdenum extraction is explained in terms of temperature, particle size, and sodium sulfide concentration.

COBALT is a silvery white metal with a slight bluish cast, strongly resembling nickel in its appearance and properties, notably its resistance to corrosion, although its alloys with other metals differ quite decidedly in their properties from those of nickel. The name cobalt was derived from the German "Kobold" meaning goblin and this came to be applied to the cobalt minerals which, although they resembled ores, did not readily yield metal when smelted by the primitive processes available in the Middle Ages. Cobalt minerals were used as pigments by potters and glass workers before the Christian era. Cobalt blue glass was found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients were entirely unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt and the metal itself was only isolated about the middle of the eighteenth century by Brandt although the preparation of cobalt compounds had been carried on in a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits at Schneeberg, Germany, in 1470. The metal is fairly hard, with a density when pure of 8.81 in the cast state and 8.92 after working. The commercial grade of cobalt has a density of about 8.75 in the cast state. The atomic weight is 58.97. The Brinell hardness of the pure metal is 124; that of the commercial grade varies from as low as 100 to as high as 138, depend¬ing upon the impurities present. Pure cobalt has a sharp melting point at 1478°C. The tensile strength of the pure metal in the cast condition is said to be higher than that of any other pure metal. Kalmus gives it as 34,400 lb. per sq. in. for cast unannealed metal; the effect of annealing at 850 to 900°C. is to raise the strength slightly. The yield point is close to the ultimate strength and the reduction in area and elongation are both low. Mechanical working raises the tensile strength of pure cobalt rapidly and in the form of wire it will be over 100,000 lb. per sq. in. The presence of small quantities of carbon in the commercial metal raises the tensile strength to as high as 61,000 lb. per sq. in., the reduction in area and elongation being raised at the same time to approximately 20 per cent.

During the past year there have been a number of significant investigations that have furnished evidence on the driving forces governing grain growth and on the role played by boundary impurities. Thus Burke has shown that in high purity alpha brass the rate of grain growth in the earliest stages is approximately inversely proportional to the existing grain size. This relation agrees with one derived by Zener assuming that surface energy was the driving force in grain growth. Also in confirmation of the surface energy hypothesis, Burke found that growth virtually stopped when the grain boundaries or even only the grain corners were melted.

ONE possible method for the separation of hafnium from zirconium is by the vapor phase oxidation of the purified mixed chlorides. An important factor for success depends on the difference in free energies of the following reactions: ZrCl(g) + O2 = ZrO2(s) + 2C12 [1] HfCl4(g) + O2 = HfO2(s) + 2C12. [2] Prakash and Sundaram1 have calculated these values from certain data and carried out experimental work with partial success. However, their free energy values for reaction 2 diverge rather widely from other data which are presented here. The possibility of successful separation is briefly considered in the light of these alternative values. Table I shows the free energy values (?F°) for reactions 1 and 2 derived from the recent compilation of data on oxides and chlorides by Glassner.2 The corresponding values of Prakash and Sundaram for the same temperatures are also shown. The alternative values to those of Prakash and Sundaram for reaction 2 are substantially confirmed by the data of Kubaschewski and Evans" and Cough-lin' on heats of formation, entropies, and heats of vaporization. In spite of the considerable uncertainty in the hafnium data it is reasonable to suppose that the oxide-chloride free energy difference for two such chemically similar elements would not be very far apart. These figures indicate clearly that the oxidation of hafnium chloride is appreciable at all temperatures. Nevertheless, there is a significant difference between the values for reactions 1 and 2

OPINION seems widely divergent as to where we stand with respect to future mineral supply. From some quarters we hear that the United States is about to become a "have-not" nation and about to experience the evil consequences such a situation would entail. Others claim that we are still a treasure house of stored-up mineral wealth, the surface of which barely has been scratched. The data to be presented here support the conclusion that neither of these viewpoints is correct and that we are far from exhaustion of those mineral resources that are basic to our industrial economy. However, exhaustion is well advanced in a number of important subsidiary minerals so that we can no longer drift along with the easy-going philosophy that the earth will provide. The time has come when we must recognize the true situation and do something about it.

The map exhibited* as an example of my method of construct ing geological strata-maps is essentially an educational appliance. The method, however, is available for the production of maps of comparatively small areas, which, I am confident, will be found of great practical value to mining engineers. Before stating how the method may be so applied I will briefly describe the map exhibited, as the easiest way of making my meaning clear. Almost any region might be taken. This map represents the eastern half of the United States; and the geology is that of the map issued by the Geological Survey, and revised and extended subsequently by Professor Hitchcock for your Institute. I use ten cards, of the colors used in the geological map, each having the geog raphy of the area printed upon it; and I superimpose these in the order in which the colors occur in the index to the map. I next cut away a portion of each card, excepting the lowest, leaving only so much of each as represents the exposure of the formation of that color plus all those which overlie it. When that is done, the whole, looked at from a distance, appears to be an ordinary geological map. Looked at more closely, however, the formations are seen to overlie one another, as in nature. The cards are covered with glass in a frame, which, hinged at the bottom edge, can be let down. The cards are then found to be all hinged in the same manner, and they, too, may be lowered, one after the-other. I am told by teachers of geology of great experience and the highest reputation that by this appliance they will be assisted in im parting to students the first facts and principles of geological sci ence. Having let down the whole series of cards, until that repre senting the Archaean is seen underlying all the rest, the teacher will gradually rebuild it. The Cambrian will thus be laid down upon the Archaean before the eyes of the class, the Silurian upon that,

MANY of the platinum metal alloys are hot-forged in the early stages of reduction from ingot and substantial quantities of platinum alloys are commercially employed at very high temperatures in ammonia oxidation units, orifices for forming glass rods and fibers and as cathodes in long-life thermionic amplifiers. They are used also for electrical heating resistors, safety blowout disks, thermocouples and crucibles. The tensile prop-erties at elevated temperatures are important in many of these situations but data on the subject are limited. Creep data also are important, but will not be covered at this time. SCOPE AND CONCLUSIONS Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature and elevated temperatures up to 1100° C. on previously well annealed samples of platinum, palladium and several of their important alloys with composi-tions shown in Table 1. The results are presented graphically in Figs. 1 to 4. The tensile strengths of platinum and the platinum-base alloys (with the exception of the 10 per cent rhodium-platinum alloy) at 1100° C. are from 16.6 to 18.8 per cent of the strengths of the same alloys (well annealed) at room temperature. The strength ratio of the 10 per cent rhodium-platinum alloy is 22.3 per cent, which is appreciably higher than that of the other materials tested.
