The scope of this paper is the description of two districts in Peru in which deposits of vanadium have been found, and the consideration of much laboratory-work that I and others have done to determine the nature of these deposits. It is with regret that I present some of the data in a state of evident incompletion, particularly the analyses of a few of the minerals, which leaves some doubt as to whether the true nature of the migerals is understood. I make no apology, however, since in this case, as in many others referring to ore-deposits, conclusive opinions cannot be stated until a great amount of work has been done, and the deposit has been thoroughly exploited. I believe that the data and the tentative conclusions here presented indicate a unique and interesting condition which may assist others in work along similar lines; arid further, what is of more practical importance, stimulate a search for a metal which, though long considered rare, is probably so merely because proper care has not been taken to recognize it. An excellent bibliography on the occurrence of vanadium in nature is given by I?. W. Clarke in his paper, Data of Geochemistry;' and in the preparation of this paper 1 have consulted many of the references contained in the Bibliography of the Chemistry of Vanadium, by M. Moisan.2 A brief review of the subject having special reference to the metallurgy of vanadium is contained in the small book by P. About fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neumann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211). Attempts to develop the structure of the bands by various methods SO that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent, of niekel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2 was reproduced in the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form (211). Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form (211) as sketched in Fig. 2. Efforts have been made for many years to observe pore structure of sedimentary rocks on a microscopic scale. A better description of the pore structure in reservoir rock would aid in the development of relations between flow through tube network models and flow in consolidated reservoir rock. The unique qualities of the scanning electron miscroscope (SEM) make it the ideal tool to use in a study of pore structure. Previous methods of studying pore structure included plastic casts of pore space and optical microscopy.l-7 There is now available a new method to observe three-dimensional flow channels in reservoir rock: a scanning electron microscope having variable magnification from X20 to X20,000 and approximately 1000 times the depth of focus of the conventional light microscopes. This microscope also can obtain stereoscopic images and can measure and diagram flow channels so that it is possible to construct a network of tubes that will model consolidated reservoir rock. THEORY OF THE SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE The scanning electron microscope (SEM) functions by projecting a beam of electrons through magnetic focusing lenses at a specimen and recording secondary electrons excited by the primary beam. The amount of secondary electron emission portrays the topography of the specimen because more secondary electrons are emitted from high points than from low points. (communication to the Secretary ?).-Dr. Pogue's presentation of the facts concerning the emerald deposits is very clear and convincing, and the only addition that I can suggest is a summary of previous theories of origin. He makes it evident that the pegmatite theory is the only one capable of explaining the existing relations, but upon certain details there may be some difference of opinion. If I understand the term pneumatolytic, it does not imply that all the elements concerned in a given deposit were transported as gases, but rather that the crystallization of these elements into the various minerals was favored by the presence of certain gaseous substances, notably H20, C02 and HF. It is highly improbable that the oxides of glucinum, aluminum, chromium, and silicon, which enter into the composition of the mineral emerald could have been transported in the gaseous form. The same is true of the metallic constituents of the parisite and other associated minerals. The explanation suggested, that solutions separated into liquid and gaseous portions, the latter ascending and forming the emerald in the upper portions of the rock only, therefore, seems to me untenable. When two formations exist side by side and one, A, is mineralized while the other, B, is barren, the possible explanations may he classed as (1) chemical, and (2) physical. 1. Some chemical feature of A not found in B might have caused crystallization of certain minerals in the former, which did not appear in the latter. In the present instance both rocks appear to be so similar chemically that no such effect can be looked for. Pogue mentions carbon as a possible precipitating agent, but describes both formations as carbonaceous, so that the difference in the minerals of the two can not be thus explained.

Seventeen deeps, which contain hot or cold brines and/or metalliferous sediments, have been discovered in the axial rift zone of the Red Sea. Metalliferous activity results from the unique geological setting of this incipient ocean basin: oceanic crust intruding in a central rift zone flanked by thick evaporite sequences. Brine pools tend to occur in structural depressions where- transform faults intersect the spreading axis. The most significant metalliferous occurrence is in the Atlantis II Deep, which contains approximately 227 Mt (dry weight) of metalliferous sediment which averages 1.04% Zn and 0.28% Cu. Higher potentially economic grades (3-6% Zn, 1% Cu, 50 glt Ag) occur in the Southwest Basin of the Atlantis II Deep, comprising total metal tonnages of 1.7 Mt Zn, 0.4 Mt Cu, and 5000 t Ag. The Pre-Pilot Mining Test conducted in 1979 raised 15 000 m3 of mud by a slurry process and demonstrated the feasibility of mining, concentration by froth flotation, and tailings disposal at sea. A Pilot Mining Test is scheduled for 1983-1984. The metalliferous discoveries in the Red Sea provide a model example of deep marine mineral exploration. Detailed mapping of bottom bathymetry and brine-interface reflectors using a high-resolution narrow-beam echo sounder has been the most effective exploration tool in the Red Sea. Followup coring has discovered additional metalliferous deposits in basins without present-day brines, and potential exists for additional discoveries. Geochemical exploration using heavy metals values in sediments (iron, manganese, zinc, copper, and mercury) and sulfur isotope values of sulfides are considered to be the most promising techniques for discovery of currently inactive deposits. Positive sulfur isotope values in the range I to 17 are an indication of hydrothermal sulfides in the Red Sea, and there is considerable contrast from back- ground bacteriogenic sulfides ( - 10 to - 45).

Mining operations of the Charcas unit at present are limited to the Tiro General mine at Charcas, in the State of san Luis Potosi, Mexico. The Tiro General mine was first operated during the Spanish occupation of Mexico for rich silver ores in an oxidized zone along the outcrop of the principal vein. In depth the ore is a complex sulfide with widely varying proportions of sphalerite, argentiferous galena and chalcopyrite ; and until recent years, it was economically impossible to carry on mining otherwise than irregularly in sections of the veins richest in galena and chalcopyrite. The advent of selective flotation brought the orebody as a whole within the field of economic interest, and a flotation mill of 650 metric tons daily capacity was constructed in the year 1925. The mining of partly worked-out sections of the mine, as well as the very heavy ground in most of the stopes opened in virgin ore, presented an unusually difficult problem. This paper describes the so-called "filled top slice" stoping method finally adopted as the standard system. Physical and Geological Conditions The principal orebody of the mine is an oreshoot about 1400 ft ng in a fissure vein striking about east and west and with an average lip of 70" to the north. The footwall of the orebody is fairly cleancu and regular both longitudinally and vertically and generally shows a dell-marked post-mineral slip. The footwall rock varies from a fairly strong limestone to a broken, metamorphosed limestone which requires heavy timbering. In some sections it is an altered, crumbly porphyry, which swells badly and necessitates frequent renewal of drift and raise tirnber. The hanging wall is irregular and frequently an assay wall. The stopina width ranges from a few feet up to more than 90 ft.; it averages about 30 ft. For the most part the hanging-wall rock is a shattered and altered monzonite porphyry, nearly aways requiring heavy timbering. The orebody is greatly fractured by post-mineral movement, which usually followed the footwall and left it as a smooth surface frequently covered with a slippery clay gouge. The purpose of the project is to divert flood flows of North Potato Creek. The project is located in the southeast corner of Tennessee near Copperhill, approximately 160 km north of Atlanta, GA. The project consists of: a 28-m high dam, a 0.9-m diam outlet conduit, an emergency spillway, and a 4.0-m diam hard rock transbasin diversion tunnel. This flood-water management system was part of Cities Service Co. mine safety program for the Cherokee ore body, which is partially located within the creek channel. The following paper describes the entire project development from feasibility studies to design and construction management.

Laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite is reported. Numerous tests were run on sylvite ore sized in the ranges of 4x20 mesh, 10x65 mesh, 8x100 mesh, -8 mesh and -10 mesh with heavy liquids in the range of 2.05 to 2.15 sp gr. From the test results, it was concluded that, with the type of ore under study and a size in the range of -8 mesh, a recovery as high as 90% could be achieved with a product grade of 70% KCl. However, a final product at an acceptable recovery cannot be made with one pass, and the float must either be further processed with heavy liquids or dried and sent to a conventional froth flotation circuit. Potash ores occurring in this country consist essentially of sylvite and halite plus minor amounts of magnesium sulfate salts and montmoril-lonite-type clays. Recovery of potash minerals from evaporite ores in the North American potash fields is accomplished almost exclusively by use of amine flotation. European practice involves froth flotation as well as solution-crystallization processes. Laboratory and pilot plant test work has been reported in Europe and the U. S. on the application of heavy media separation to potash ore beneficiation. Work was probably discontinued because of lack of ore with the required very coarse liberation characteristics (1/8 to 1/2 in. liberation size). Sylvite, with a gravity of 1.99, and halite, with a gravity of 2.17, appear to be ideal for separation by heavy liquids, which are now available in gravities from 1.59 to 2.95. This paper reviews preliminary results obtained from laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite. TEST WORK The heavy liquids used in the tests under discussion were chlorobromethane, with a specific gravity of 1.923, and dibromethane, with a gravity of 2.490. These liquids, completely miscible, were combined in the proportions needed to give a mixture having the desired specific gravity. Feed for the laboratory tests was mine-run ore screened to the desired mesh sizes. In conducting the tests, the sample was fed at a constant rate into a stream of heavy liquid and the mixture directed into a small separatory vessel. The float overflowed into a collecting pan while the sink collected in the bottom of the separatory vessel and was removed at the end of the test. Approximately 500 g of feed constituted a charge. Pulp density of the feed was kept low to prevent particle to particle interference in separation. With feed in the range of 8x100 mesh, a pulp density of under 10% solids by weight was found advisable. With coarser feed the pulp density could be carried as high as 15% solids. Time of separation was very rapid. In the case of 4x20-mesh material, separation was effected in 15 to 30 sec; with -10-mesh feed, separation required about 1 to 2 min. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT Since heavy liquids are toxic to varying degrees, all separatory work was carried out in a standard laboratory fume hood. It was noted that complete removal of fumes was not being effected; therefore the hood construction was modified, resulting in a completely satisfactory arrangement for heavy liquid test work. In the interest of safety, details of this fume hood are reported here. Unlike most fumes, heavy liquid fumes tend to settle and flow like water, rather than to rise like a gas. Working on this assumption, a standard water drain was installed in the hood. Across the front of the hood a 1-in. barrier was constructed. In the rear of the hood a false back was installed, with an adjustable sliding door on both the bottom and top of this panel. As shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust fan pulled a vacuum behind the barrier, sucking the heavy fumes from the bottom of the hood. Another addition was the drying box, shown to the right of the hood. This is simply a box covered on top with hardware cloth and connected by a 6-in. inlet to the hood. Sample trays made of fine mesh wire filter screens were found ideal for drying samples. With the expansion of open pit operations, belt conveyors are going to be used in the 13 608 to 18 144 t/h (15,000 to 20,000 stph) capacity range, which calls for a review of some of the horsepower calculation methods. This paper presents methods (based on German research data, field tests and theoretical considerations) for the evaluation of the Ky factor in the CEMA formula for belt conveyors of large carrying capacity, which fall beyond the limits of the data given in tables in the CEMA book. (The CEMA limits are 407 N\\m (300 lb ft) and Tave = 7.3 Mg (16,000 lb). At these large loads, the impression resistance of the belting on the idlers plays a major role, which in turn influences the magnitude of the drive horse power required. An example will illustrate the order of magnitude difference of the horsepower values obtained by using a conventional calculation method and the suggested method, as well as the beneficcia1 influence of the 4-roll idler in comparison to the standard 3-roll unit for a large caving capacity belt conveyor. This paper concerns itself with the analysis of the resistance to motion of belt conveyors, emphasizing the evaluation of the frictional resistance to motion due to load and belt pressure on the idlers and the flexing resistance of the belt and material when passing over the idlers. In the case of long and heavily loaded belt conveyors, the aforementioned resistances reach extremely high values calling for close analysis of the phenomena, presently not calculable with normally used formulas. This paper establishes correlation between experimental and empirical data presenting practical formulas a tool for the designer of high-capacity belt conveyors. The application of the formula is illustrated in an example in the Appendix.

Lead sulfide concentrates, which may include other lead concentrates, are sintered on an up-draught sintering machine without the addition of any diluting agents or fluxes. Subsequently they are melted in an oil- or gas-fired rotary furnace. The sintering and melting processes are based upon the following roast-reaction: PbS + 2 PbO = 3 Pb + SO, PbS + PbSO, =2 Pb + 2 SO, For obtaining a lead bullion free from sulfur, the sintering process is carried out in such a way that the sinter product contains a small amount of excess oxygen above that to react with the sulfides. At the end of the melting process, when the reactions are finished, the remaining small amount of oxide residues is reduced with coal to which a certain percentage of soda ash (about 1 pct of the lead bullion) is added. For the lead smelting process described neither coke nor fluxes—except soda ash—are required. This process is being utilized by a European smelter successfully and with a high lead recovery. The consumption figures for the smelting of 100 tons per day of lead concentrates are indicated. The lead content of the lead concentrates from modern ore dressing plants ranges from 65 pct to above 80 pct. In most lead smelters of the world these concentrates are smelted in a blast furnace. For blast-furnace smelting the concentrates have to be desulfurized and agglomerated by sintering. A requirement for the perfect operation of a down-draught sintering machine and of a blast furnace is a maximum lead content in the feed of 40 to 45 pct. For this reason, some lead concentrates have to be diluted by adding return slags, limestone, and possibly iron oxide and sand. As an example, 100 tons of lead concentrate with 72 pct Pb would contain 13.5 tons of gangue (including the zinc). To produce a perfect sinter with 42 pct Pb it would be necessary to add 70 tons of flux and return slag, more than five times the original weight of the gangue, to the sinter mix and blast-furnace charge. A correspondingly large amount of coke would be required in order that all of these materials reach the heat of formation and the melting temperatures of the slag (1200" to 1400°C) inside the blast furnace. The roast-reaction process presents a possibility for lead recovery without dilution of the concentrates. In this process the concentrate mixed with coal is placed upon a Newnam-hearth and air is blown through nozzles into the heated mix. AS a result metalllic lead and a relatively great amount of so-called .'Grey Slag" with a lead content of 25 to 35 pct are formed. The slag is sintered to eliminate sulfur and, after addition of the requisite fluxes, treatt:d in a blast furnace. Owing to the poor recovery of lead from the hearths and to the unavoidable heavy hand-work plus the risk of poisoning this process is utilized in very few 112ad smelters today. Since in mxny countries of the world coke is expensive and difficult to obtain, it appeared feasible to use the principle of the roast-reaction by modern sintering and melting methods with recovery of the lead in electric, or oil, gas, or coal-fired furnaces. Two processes are utilized on an industrial scale: A) Lead smelting in the electric furnace of the Bolidens Gruv A/B in Sweden, as described by S. J. Walldcn, N. E. Lindvall, K.G. Gorling, and S. Lundquist. B) The self-fluxing lead smelting of Lurgi Gesell-schaft fiir Chemie und Huttenwesen m.b. H., Frankfurt a M, Germany, which is described in this paper. In the Boliden process referred to above the sinter mix is pelletized by enveloping return fines with layers of flue dust, limestone powder, and dried galena concentrate. The roasting and agglomeration are carried out on a down-draught machine, and a slight excess of sulfur is left in the sinter product. During the smelting in the electric furnance the roast-reactions occur and a slag poor in lead and a sulfur bearing lead are formed. This latter is subsequently oxidized in a converter to obtain lead bullion and dross. The Lurgi-process achieves the maximum possible extent of the roasting reaction on the sintering machine. ON MAY 22 the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of its founding at Wilkes- Barre, Pa., in May, 1871. The Directors have transferred the May meeting of the Board to Wilkes-Barre, and the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section has invited as many members of the Institute as can to be present at this time and to join with their fellow-engineers at Wilkes-Barre in the inspection trip through a portion of the anthracite district that has been planned. Ac- cess to Wilkes-Barre is easy, from nearby points, over excellent automobile roads, or by train. The distance from New York is only about 140 miles. , It is hoped to engage a special car for those travelling by train from New York, which will leave the Pennsylvania Station over the Lehigh Valley Railroad at 11:50 p.m., arriving in Wilkes-Barre the next morning. Return can be made from Wilkes-Barre by sleeper the same evening, arriving in New York Saturday morning. Other trains are available for those who prefer a daylight journey.

The method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.' With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. The Crushing Device The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1 in. dia. by 36 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 1/2-in. dia. by % in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of -the chamber. In mid-Tertiary time a wet silici-alkalic magma penetrated the Precambrian rocks of what is now the Tenmile Range of Central Colorado and formed the Climax Stock. The stock is a composite one and was intruded in four separate irruptions, each giving rise to a major hydrothermal event. The first three of these produced large stockwork ore bodies that cap and flank the tops of their respective source intrusives; the fourth, and last, yielded almost no commercial mineralization. The ore bodies and their related zones of alteration are circular to ring-shaped in plan and arcuate in section. The different phases of the stock are so positioned with respect to each other that many of the circular and arcuate zones of mineralization and alteration overlap or are juxtaposed. Evidence of a time separation between the different ore bodies is found in certain dikes that were intruded between periods of mineralization and are well mineralized in one ore body but are barren in another. If it is assumed that the parent magma at Climax contained 10 per cent "water," that the "water" contained 0.1 grams per liter of molybdenum, and that the processes of extraction were 100 per cent efficient, then approximately 10 cubic miles of magma would be required for the formation of each ore body. The volume requirements, taken in conjunction with the cross-sectional areas of the different phases of the stock to explored depths, suggest to the authors that each magma chamber was columnar, extended to a depth of thousands of feet, and was connected with a much larger master reservoir. The repetition of similar intrusive, structural, and hydrothermal events, indicates periodic tapping of this reservoir. A regular chemical evolution of the parent magma is suggested by the systematic change in metal ratios and differences in the sites of deposition, relative to the source intrusive, in each of the four separate igneous hydrothermal stages. The preparation of ground was due to changes in magmatic and/ or hydrothermal pressures within the igneous-hydrothermal columns; small, repeated, up and down movements of the rock enclosing the tops of the columns formed the stockwork fractures into which the mineralizers penetrated. The forceful emplacement of each successive phase of the Climax Stock resulted in a slight doming and rotation to the westward of the earlier-formed geologic features. Postore normal displacement along the Mosquito fault is estimated at about 9000 feet. Part of one ore body was cut by the fault and lies at depth below the Paleozoic sedimentary strata on the hanging wall. On the footwall side of the fault, subaerial erosion and glaciation removed a large part of one ore body and uncovered the top of a second.

THE first attempts at direct utilization of blast-furnace gas in engines were made in 1895. For a considerable time the gas had been burnt in Cowper stoves for heating the blast for the furnace, and under the boilers which supplied steam to the blowing-engines, and others serving the furnaces. It was natural, therefore, that the idea of directly employing it in gas-engines should have occurred simultaneously to several engineers, notably to Lürmann and to Lencauchez, who had pointed out the blast-furnace as a powerful -gas-producer. Nevertheless, nowhere had any attempt been made to apply it to this purpose up to the end of 1894, when Thwaite proposed it to Mr. James Riley, of the Glasgow Iron & Steel Company. About the same time investigations were being made in Belgium and in Germany, independently of Thwaite's experiments, which were not generally known on the Continent. The industrial world, which up to that time had hardly favored the idea, had thus been gradually prepared to receive it. The gas-engine, long restricted to small sizes and dependent upon the use of an expensive fuel obtainable only in large centers, now began to make headway. At the Paris Exhibition of 1889 two engines of 100 h.p. were shown and excited much interest among engineers. One had four cylinders, and was made at the celebrated works of the Deutz Company, and the other was a single-cylinder engine, exhibited by two French designers, Messrs. Delamare-Deboutteville and Malandin. In the meanwhile the design of gas-producers had made important progress, completely freeing the new engine from its

Four counties in Indiana- LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland-have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or near high population areas and have no surface-mineable limestone deposits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Mineable seams suitable for aggregate are 120-150 m (400-500 ft) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 m (300 ft) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 m (2,000 ft) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.

The possibility of using a semiconductor, metal, semiconductor structure as a light detector is discussed. A brief theoretical argument is presented which predicts that this structure should have pho-toresponse characteristics similur to those of a metal-semiconductor diode, but with the magnitude of the current increased by a transistor gain factor. Measurements made at low frequencies on a particulur S-M-S device agree u~th this prediction aizd shoul that significant gain factors are attainable. The current gain is substantially higher than that predicted for the metal base transistor. It is proposed that the operation of these units is more closely approxinzated by the metal-gate model which predicts higher current gains. A qualitative discussion of its high-frequency performance indicates that detection of light modulated at microwave frequencies by a S-M-S deuice is possible. ADVANCES in the technology of chemical vapor deposition'-4 have made it possible to form a S-M-S structure consisting of a thin metallic layer sandwiched between layers of single-crystal semiconductor. It has been proposed5-7 that, if the metal layer is made sufficiently thin, this structure could be used in an amplifier having several advantages over presently available transistors including higher-frequency performance. Calculations8 predict that the maximum gain-bandwidth product is nearly an order of magnitude higher than that of a bipolar transistor having the same geometry. Maximum oscillating frequencies in the microwave range are predicted. Electrical measurements made on S-M-S devices have shown that, although the theoretical frequency characteristics are not presently attainable, current and power gain is obtained. Another possible application of the S-M-S structure is its use in a light detector. This structure is a three-layer relative of the metal-semiconductor diode. Light detection using M-S diodes is the subject of considerable present interest. They are known to have a short response time and the ability to detect light having a photon energy below the semiconductor bandgap. In this paper, the mechanism by which S-M-S photocurrent is generated is discussed. An expression is derived which shows that the response characteristics are similar to those of a M-S diode, but that the magnitude of the current is increased due to the transistorlike behavior of the device. The results of low-frequency response measurements on a particular S-M-S structure are presented. These agree with the theoretical predictions and show that significant gain factors are attainable. A qualitative discussion of the high-frequency characteristics is presented which predicts that detection of light at microwave frequencies by a S-M-S device is possible. THEORY In this discussion, the photocurrent, iT, measured across terminals attached to the semiconductor emitter and collector layers is related to the current pho-toemitted from the metal base layer. The latter will be referred to as the primary photocurrent. The behavior of the primary photocurrent is determined by the characteristics of the two metal-semiconductor diodes. The diode photoemission is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows the emitter and collector potential barriers. The metal thickness has been greatly exaggerated. As will be discussed later, the actual barrier shape can be much more complex, but this diagram illustrates the essential features of the photoemission process. Data were obtained with hematite with octyl hydroxamate and oleate as collectors to determine the mechanism of collector adsorption and also to establish the roles that conditioning time and temperature assume in this system. The presence of hydroxy complexes of iron are apparently necessary for chemisorption of collector to occur, and it appears as if extended conditioning times and elevated temperature promote greater dissolution of the mineral and hence greater concentrations of hydroxy complexes. Data were also collected with two natural hematitic ores. With one ore that was ground to 70% - 15u, an addition of 0.4 lb per ton hydrox-amate resulted in a final concentrate recovery of 86% at a grade of 64% iron. Satisfactory concentrate grade could not be obtained with fatty acid under these conditions. The effect of conditioning time prior to the addition of collector was also examined with another ore. When the ore was conditioned for 3 min, 19% of the iron was recovered in the concentrate at a grade of 67% Fe. With a conditioning time of 7 min, 73% of the iron reported to the concentrate at a grade of 62% Fe. These products were obtained with an addition of 0.2 lb per ton hydroxamate. This ore also responded well to flotation with fatty acid. The use of potassium octyl hydroxamate as a collector for iron oxide has been the subject of an earlier study.1 From this initial study, it was suspected that hydrolysis of surface ferric iron was involved in collector adsorption. More recent work in other systems has shown that slight mineral dissolution, followed by hydrolysis of cations common to the mineral lattice, is apparently necessary, and that adsorption of these hydroxy com- plexes probably occurs prior to the adsorption of collector. In view of these facts, work has been continued on the hydroxamate-hematite and oleate-hematite systems to gain better insight into the mechanisms of collector adsorption on iron oxide. Microflotation experiments in conjunction with infrared analysis were used in this regard. In addition it was felt necessary to establish more clearly the responses that can be obtained from natural ores when hydroxamate is used as collector as compared to those obtained when fatty acid is used. Experimental Materials and Techniques Pure potassium oleate, potassium octyl hydroxamate, synthesized from hydroxylamine hydrochloride and methyl octanoate, and a distilled Tall Oil were employed as collectors. In most cases, it is far from easy to analyze the conditions of service and tell which is the greatest factor in determining the life of wire rope. If we start on a layout for an entirely new rope system, the task of making conditions satisfactory is simplified so far as the engineering details are concerned; but if the plant requiring wire rope is in operation, any change is likely to involve the expenditure of considerable money to replace and change over machinery that must be kept in constant operation, because a large monetary loss will result from a shutdown for even a few days. Often wire rope is kept operating under bad conditions, as the user thinks that it is cheaper and quicker to replace the rope than to make alterations in the hoisting machinery. A typical case is a metal mine operating in what is now almost the center of a large mining city, where it owns a few acres of mineral rights. It was expected that the shaft would go to a depth of 1000 ft. (305 m.), so a moderate-sized rope, about 1 1/4in. (31.7 mm.), was used on a 6-ft. drum with a 7-ft. head-frame sheave and rather short lead from drum to head sheave. This mine has gone deeper each year until it is now 2500 ft. deep and the rope speed has been increased from 1500 ft. per min. to over 3000 ft. The original rope just filled the drum in one layer, now it overwinds three layers. The original ropes were probably 6 X 19 crucible steel and lasted from 12 to 18 mo.; now, the highest grade plow steel is used, yet the average service is only about 6 mo. The cause is not hard to find. If the engineers had known at the outset what would be done with this hoist, the design would have been very different. Conditions at this mine, from a wire-rope standpoint, have gradually become worse and it is difficult to see how rope service on this hoist can be compared with the service of previous years with any fairness to the wire-
