The subject article appears in the February, 1978, edition of Mining Engineering, and on page 190 carries the statement, "As most operators know, in a Water-Only cyclone, ability to adjust the vortex finder is quite important due to the sensitivity of this type of operations to variance in feed conditions and having to take them apart to make this adjustment is always a nuisance." Our experience as a manufacturer and supplier of Water Only cyclones does not agree with the above statement, and we offer the following brief discussion. Our company finds that the sensitivity of the Water-Only cyclone is a function of the fineness of the coal being washed, with the sensitivity to vortex finder length being greatest for coals coarser than 3/4-in. and virtually insensitive to raw coal finer than 1 mm. For coals finer than 1 mm, we find that we can use the shortest standard vortex finder in either our 10- or 15- in. Water Only cyclone without exception. For coals 5/8-in. x 1 mm ceramic vortex finders of fixed length have been satisfactory in all cases following an initial testing period in which the length was determined. Coals coarser that 5/8-in. are more sensitive to the vortex finder length, and two installations handling coals coarser than 1-in. continued to experiment with vortex finders of various lengths long after the initial startup period. For coals of all sizes, final adjustment of product quality has been achieved by determining the optimum size of apex orifice, which is accessible and readily changed, if necessary. Comments above assume no unusual change in the coal being washed or the required quality of clean coal.

THE attention of physicists and metallurgists has been directed toward the study and explanation of the deformation textures in metals for the past 15 years. In 1920 N. Uspenski and S. Konobejewski1 were first able to show that the symmetrical X-ray diffraction effects that had been previously reported by E. Hupka2 and others in metal foils were caused by a directed arrangement of the crystallites. Since then, the systematic study of textures resulting from the application of the pure forces of tension or compression to polycrystalline materials hag been supple-mented by many investigations on deformed single crystals, which have greatly added to our knowledge of deformation. However, despite the valuable information secured from these comparative studies only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature. This lack of quantita-tive data is especially unfortunate because of the much greater practical significance of rolling textures and their effects in both cold-rolled and annealed materials. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of specifying the deformation of rolled single crystals in the hope that such information might later facilitate the explanation of polycrystal-line textures.

Byproducts are more important to the copper mining companies than to the copper market. Copper ores frequently contain gold, silver, molybdenum, lead, zinc, and cobalt. With the increase in the prices of these metals copper mining has become more profitable. If byproduct prices remain high, additional firms will be attracted to the copper industry; the increased supply of copper will reduce the long-run copper price. However, this is unlikely to happen because the markets for the copper byproducts, especially molybdenum and cobalt, are small. Increased recovery from copper and other sources will depress the prices of these byproducts before the copper price is significantly affected. Should byproduct prices remain high, the copper market will both settle at a lower long-run price and be more unstable in the short run. Since changes in the copper price do not affect the entire earnings of a multi-metal mine, the copper price must fall further before such mines reduce output in the short run. Higher byproduct revenues will make copper supply less responsive to copper prices; shifts in copper demand will result in greater copper price fluctuations in the short run than they did before.

DESIRABLE as it is to summarize what has been set forth in preceding chapters, the task can only be approached with great hesitation. What follows represents the personal views of the author at the moment of writing, reserving the privilege to change them on more mature reflection or in the light of further evidence. With that reservation they may be stated somewhat as follows. Education for the mineral industries falls into two categories; general education and technical vocational, using the word vocational not in its usual sense but to signify preparation for specific activities, in which sense a law school is a vocational school. Even at the beginning, as indicated in the first chapter, mineral industry education was partly general and, partly technical and that relationship still persists, because technical education requires a firm basis of general education. Our general American system is to provide free public' general education through the twelfth grade, or completion of high-school work, though there are already many technical vocational high schools, and even in a community where nearly all the young people are preparing for entrance to college there will be some who wish to qualify for employment at the end of the high-school course, or even on completing junior high. Our educational system, therefore, has not only to provide education for those who intend to proceed beyond the twelfth grade but also for those who, for a variety of reasons, may wish or be forced to cease full-time education at any level between the first and twelfth grades. This study has been chiefly concerned with the problem of what kind and how much technical education to provide for those who have completed the twelfth grade and who wish to make their living in the mineral industries. A Meeting of the San Francisco Section was held on May 7, 1917. Chairman Shockley was in the Chair. The Section was honored by the presence of President Moore and Secretary Stoughton of the Institute. C. W. Merrill introduced President Moore, who then spoke to the Section on the Aims of the Institute. He discussed the possibility of improving the standards of membership by introducing a classification of membership. The present rigid investigation of applicants was pointed out by him. He spoke of the important influence that the local Sections can exert on the Institute and of the importance of sociability and informality at the meetings. Secretary Stoughton, who was introduced by the Chairman, emphasized somewhat the same points. He mentioned the need for making the Bulletin of the Institute more, interesting than it is at present, this to be accomplished by raising the necessary funds by increased advertising. He asked for an expression of opinion on this point. He. said that the employment department of the Institute is now used extensively. At the request of Mrs. Mark L. Requa, Mr. Stoughton. announced that a San Francisco branch of the Woman's Auxiliary of the, Institute was being formed and asked that the ladies of the members' families send in their names to Mrs. Requa or to the Secretary of the Institute.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) I AM indebted to L. E. Bryant, of Danville, Ky., President of the Virginia Mining Co., operating coal-mines in Scott county, Tenn., for the following information relating to the existence of the Clinton iron-ore under the NW. slope of the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and Tennessee. During the past 15 years quite an important oil-field has been developed in a region having Wayne county, Ky., as its center, and a large number of wells have been drilled in that and adjacent territory in the search for oil. Many of' these wells have been carried to considerable depths below the recognized oil-bearing horizon, and one of them was drilled by Mr. Bryant at Pine Knot, a station on the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific railroad, a few miles north of the point where that road crosses the Kentucky-Tennessee State-line. The elevation of the surface at the crossing is about 1,400 ft. above sea-level. The railroad is located on the dividing ridge between the Cumberland river and Big South Fork. At a depth of 1,720 ft. below the surface the drill reached and passed through a formation which the drillers called " red rock," but which Mr. Bryant classified as Clinton iron-ore, as its geological position corresponded to that formation. The ore at this point was 6 ft. thick and appeared to be of uniform quality throughout. An analysis of the drillings gave : Fe, 33; Mn, 0.25; Si02? 3 ; Al203, 2 ; CaO, 13; MgO, 7 ; P,05, 0.333 per cent. ; S, trace. This analysis seems to confirm the belief that the ore is Clinton, and that it is of a quality equal to the average of the deep or unbleached Clinton ores in Tennessee and Alabama. This discovery led Mr. Bryant to make further examinations and inquiries, and he found that the stratum called " red rock " by the drillers had been passed through and noted in the great majority of the wells carried down to the same geological hori-

A BRIEF history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name Lt breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the "breaker-boy " as a slate-¬picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or ? splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. Carrying as they do a far greater percentage of impurities; particularly when removing the pillars, it became necessary to build new and better equipped preparation-plants. Finally, we are now at the highest stage of complication yet known to the art of coal-preparation. We are dealing with varying specific gravities, frictional difference, hardness, structure, and form in the pieces of coal and slate coming from many different veins, and

Report of the Secretary TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-To a Board of Directors keeping in as close touch with all of the affairs under their care as do the Board of Directors of the A. I. M. E., through their monthly meetings, a report of the year's progress is almost superfluous. To the members who read the monthly reports of. the Board Meetings and of the various activities of the Institute as published each month, a yearly report cannot carry much fresh information; yet for both it may be well, as is the custom, to glance over the field of our activities during the past year, and to make an estimate for the year to come. The beginning of 1924 was not propitious for the members of the mining profession, though tonnage production for 1923 had been high and the gross value higher than for several years. The margin of profit had been narrow, prospecting and development were limited, and many of our members were unemployed, or were working in other industries. Toward the end of the year, higher metal, prices were in sight. Old-time optimism began to grow, and it now brightens the outlook for 1925. An excellent barometer of the prosperity of the industry, and that of the Institute, for they go hand in hand, is the work of our Employment Bureau. During the past few months, the percentage of our members for whom openings have been found has been increasing to a marked extent, and many members who had fallen in arrears are placing themselves in good standing. The number of new members joining has remained about as it was in 1922 and 1923. The Directors have reason to congratulate themselves on the interest maintained during a dull period, for it is not humanly possible to take a keen interest in the technology of an industry when our hands and minds are not actively engaged in it Now, with a much brighter outlook, we can look forward to a year of increasing prosperity for the industry and for the Institute.

The value of the electric log as a means of interpreting underground structures has been increasingly demonstrated by its almost universal present-day use. It becomes important, therefore, to be able to evaluate the factors that affect the values obtained. By far the greatest number of electric logs are measured today in boreholes filled with rotary mud, the properties of which may exert an important influence on the electric log. In an effort to establish what the order of magnitude of such effects might be, a series of investigations was made in the laboratory and the field. Apparatus suitable for either field or laboratory use was designed and a procedure established for determining the factors that affect the resistivity of drilling muds over a wide variation in mud condition. Five muds representative of the types of clay-base muds employed in California were tested and the following observations were made: 1. The effect of raising the temperature from 8o° to i8o°F. is to decrease the resistivit~ of the mud or filtrate approximately 50 per cent. 2. The resistivity of the mud in most cases closely approximates that of its filtrate. 3. The change in the resistivities of muds caused by the addition of chemical is not the same function of the amount of chemical added for each mud. 4. The effect produced by increased sodium chloride content is to reduce markedly the resistivity of the mud and its filtrate. 5. Weighting materials, such as baroid and limestone, tend to increase the resistivity of drilling mud. 6. Cement and counteracting reagents reduce mud resistivity. The results of the investigation indicate that the mud resistivity is materially affected by the addition of electrolytes whether these are added for the purpose of conditioning the mud or enter the mud when salt beds or highly saline structures are penetrated. It should be observed, however, that the magnitude of the effect produced upon the electric log by changes in mud resistivity is also dependent upon the relative salinity of the water en. countered in the formation being logged. The laboratory data are supplemented by field data, which indicate that both the self-potential and resistivity curves are influenced by mud resistivity.

Do you know that valuable clues to the geology and mineralization of a district can be found in a handful of sand from a stream bed draining the area? This handful of sand has a story to tell to those who have a little patience. The handful of sand may contain tiny specks of valuable minerals (gold, scheelite, cinnabar, chromite, tourmaline-to mention a few), that will lure you upstream with the hope of uncovering a new deposit. More practically, this handful of sand can indicate the type of rocks that are exposed by the drainage system. Any mineral that has a specific gravity of 3.5 or higher can be separated from soil by panning. Garnet and pyrite, for example, can indicate an outcrop of metamorphic rock. In one district where the writer prospected, small boat-shaped orthorhombic crystals of topaz always indicated the presence of andesite outcrops.

THE theoretical possibilities for the realization of flash smelting have been known for a long time. Calculations concerning the same can be found in previously published literature,1 and suggestions for its accomplishment in practice are described in patents on the subject. Likewise a smaller number of practical test results are known. Autogenous smelting is closely connected with flash smelting, since in flash smelting techniques it is possible to use the heat evolved by oxidation of the sulfides for the smelting process to such an extent that under certain conditions smelting can proceed without additional fuel. However, in the event that insufficient heat is available from the oxidation of the sulfide concentrates, then additional heat may be supplied by preheating the air, using oxygen enriched air, on burning additional fuel with the concentrate.

ThE phenomenon of high ductility associated with a phase transformation, termed super plasticity, has been reported for a number of alloy systems. Abnormally high ductility has been observed during tensile testing of cast eutectic alloys of Pb-Sn and Mg-cu.1 Brasses of Cu-37 at. pct Zn and Cu-40 at. pct Zn elongate up to 180 pct when tested near their transformation temperature.' Enhanced ductility was also observed in Cu-47 at. pct Zn tested near the order-disorder transformation temperature. The most remarkable super-plastic effect reported to date is for the eutectoid alloy A1-60 at. pct Zn, where elongations up to 1000 pct have been reported.3 underwood4 has recently summarized the conditions that normally accompany the superplastic effect which are: 1) a phase transformation or allotropic change or order-disorder transformation; 2) an externally applied stress; 3) presence of an interface between two phases; and 4) a metastable structural condition. In addition, higher ductility is observed when the specimen is tested at slow deformation rates rather than under impact. The purpose of this note is to present evidence of the superplastic effect in a Cr-30 at. pct Co alloy. In addition, low-temperature bend ductility data are given for the alloy in the quenched, metastable, single-phased condition and in the slow-cooled, two-phased, near-equilibrium condition. Sixty-gram alloy ingots were prepared by noncon-sumable arc melting of iodide chromium and electron-beam-melted cobalt. These were cast into rectangular ingots and fabricated to 0.035-in. sheet by rolling at 2300°F. Attempts to roll at slightly lower temperatures invariably resulted in severe cracking, apparently due to presence of the brittle a phase below the transformation temperature of 2230°F. Tensile specimens with a 0.25 by 1.0 in. reduced section were cut from the sheet by electrical discharge machining. The specimens were heated at 2400°F for 1/2 hr to obtain a recrystallized, bcc, single-phased structure. Temperature of the specimens was subsequently raised or lowered to the desired test temperature and held for 10 min prior to testing at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min. Fig. 1 shows the chromium-rich side of the Cr-Co phase diagram.6 The alloy composition investigated is near the point of maximum solubility of cobalt in chromium, and the alloy is two-phased when in equilibrium at temperatures below 2230°F. The results of tensile tests conducted at temperatures indicated by X's in Fig. 1 are summarized in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. Tensile elongations shown in Fig. 2 increase from 11 pct at 1900°F to a maximum of 160 pct at 2250°F. The elongation then decreases to 44 pct as the test temperature is further increased to 2600°F. The proximity of the temperature of highest elongation and the solvus temperature suggests that a superplastic effect is present in Cr + 30 at. pct Co similar to that observed for other alloys that show anomalous ductility. IN a previous paper1 a method for the measurement of the compara-tive desulphurizing power of slags was described and data, were presented covering the range of likely slags containing up to 10 per cent MgO. In the present work the range is extended to include Tags containing up to 20 per cent MgO, and the effect of temperature on 5 per cent and 15 per cent MgO sings over the range 147.5° to 1525° C. is included. The method used was that described in the previous paper except that some of the temperature measurements were made with a noble-metal thermocouple instead of a tungsten-graphite thermocouple. Twelve-gram charges of 0.S per cent sulphur-metal and 5-gram charges of slag were subjected to heating for 30 min. at a prescribed temperature. The charges were analyzed for sulphur content. For purposes of comparison, desulphuriz-ing power is defined as the ratio of the percentage of sulphur found in the slag to that found in the metal. Six slag and metal charges were made coincidentally in holes in a section of all electrode graphite rod. One slag and metal charge was used as a control by means of which adjustment in the desulphurization value could be made for small varia-tions in temperature and other factors. For convenient presentation of the data, the slags are arranged in groups -in each of which one of the four main slag components is constant. Thus, the 15 per cent MgO slags are presented separately from those containing 20 per cent MgO.

ALTHOUGH annealing twins are frequently observed in many fcc metals, their occurrence in aluminum is relatively rare. ~ahn' in his review of twinning has listed only a few references to observations of twins in aluminum, e.g., Refs. 2 and 3. They have also been shown to occur in evaporated aluminum layers.4 During the present work, several annealing twins were studied in aluminum. The specimens of 1099-grade aluminum had the following thermomechanical treatment: deformed 90 pct by rolling, partially re-crystallized, further deformed 60 pct to a final thickness of 100 p, then annealed for 24 hr at 120°C. This treatment produced several annealing twins—-about ten per electron microscope specimen. The specimens were produced by the window technique and examined in a Phillips E.M. 200 operating at 100 kv. A typical twin boundary is shown in Fig. 1. For several of the twins studied the twin plane could be tilted so that it was parallel to the electron beam, e.g., Fig. 2. The associated diffraction pattern, Fig. 3, shows the twinned relationship between the grains. The twinning plane in each case was (111). Use of a reflection common to both the twin and the matrix,* i.e., using reflecting planes parallel in the twin and the matrix, the coherent twin boundary becomes invisible and only the noncoherent segments of the stepped boundary are seen, e.g., Fig. 4. Trace analysis of the boundaries showed that the long straight portions were invariably the twin plane; i.e., these portions are coherent. The planes of the shorter segments are shown by Fig. 5 to be (551 1, (7111, and {211).

THE autumn is the time that nearly all the special groups within the broad field of the Institute's activitives chose for their own special meetings. The big annual meeting in New York in February has its own special advantages, but to realize them involves sacrificing others. A meeting of a smaller group with the subjects brought up for discussion much more closely limited to a single field of interest has some advantages that a big general meeting cannot possibly have. And so the custom has gradually developed of having these smaller meetings in the autumn, at con¬venient places, so the men will not have to travel too far from the job to be present. Sometimes the meetings have for their field of interest a single phase of mineral technology, and are called divisional, and at other times they cover a diversity of topics that are locally important in that geographical area, and are then called regional meetings. Of the five meetings to be held this fall, four are divisional and one regional. Two of the divisional meetings are to be held in the same place at the same time, but with programs so arranged that they do not conflict.

The insoluble-residue method for the examination and correlation of limestones and dolomites, or other sedimentary rocks containing calcium and magnesium carbonates, originated and was developed in the laboratory of the Missouri Geological Survey. The numerous and ever-increasing problems in the field of applied geology, and the need for a tool or aid in the solution of them, led to experimental work with samples collected from deep wells, in the early part of 1924. The success attained, almost at the outset, with this method was so great that the method has now been developed from the state of the experimental to the realm of large-scale, every-day routine. In a previous paper the writer1 described the procedure in detail and the characteristics of the residues obtained from certain Paleozoic formations in Missouri. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the economic application of the insoluble-residue method. Developmental History Within the Ozark region of southern Missouri the geologic column consists of Lower Ordovician (Canadian of Ulrich) and Upper Cambrian formations, which are composed mainly of dolomite with subordinate amounts of sandstone, shale and limestone. Chert is found to some extent in all except one of the dolomite formations. The stratigraphy of the region is complex because the dolomites have lithologic similarities, fossils are few and often poorly preserved, and identifiable horizons within the comparatively thick formations are not common. Although considerable stratigraphic work of an areal nature had been done for a period of many years by the Missouri Geological Survey, the detailed geologic succession had not, until a few years ago, been systematically worked out. The problems of subsurface stratigraphy were even more complex. This region constitutes the main ground-water province of the State of Missouri and within it wells of varying depths are drilled in order to obtain supplies of ground water. At this time, when electricity in its various applications is attract- ing so much interest, and with such good reason, it has been suggested to me that, as the Aspen Mining and Smelting Company, of Aspen, Pitkin county, Colorado, was the first mining company in America to employ electrical power for hoisting, a record of what has been accomplished by this company would be of interest. Early in the year 1888 the question of power for the development of the ore-horizon lying below the level of the tunnel through which the property is worked, became one of importance. The conditions under which it was proposed to use power were as follows (See Fig. 1): The company's mines lie upon the northwestern slope of a mountain, the ascent of which is at an angle of 28' from the horizon. THE use of galvanic cells for the determination of oxygen activities has spread rapidly since the suitability of calcia-stabilized zirconia as a solid electrolyte material was first demonstrated by Kiukkola and Wagner.' In many of these investigations:-7 including several at ARL, the free-energy changes for various oxidation-reduction reactions involving the oxides FexO, NiO, and Cu2O have been measured as a means of assuring that a cell apparatus is functioning properly.
