There was an extensive mining and industrial exploitation of Russia, about 20 years ago, by Belgian, French and British capitalists; but the results were discouraging. It is said that the Belgian and French public together lost approximately $400,000,000, chiefly in the coal and iron industry of southern Russia. This loss is largely accounted for by the fact that most of the companies were formed, as usual in " boom" times, to sell stock; and that thorough investigations were not made. I11 1906, renewed interest was taken in Russian mines, especially in those of gold and copper, and a considerable literature is growing on this subject; but as yet I have seen no account of one of the large Russian mining estates. The following notes on such property, where the conditions are so different from those in the mining regions of the United States, should be of interest: This inadequate and probably somewhat inaccurate account is made up, partly from my own notes made on the ground, in the summers of 1904 and 1905, and partly from a volume on the geology and resources of the estate issued several years ago, containing surface- and mine-maps, and from a pamphlet published in 1904, giving a general account of the condition and prospects of the property. This pamphlet includes a report made in 1899 by Arthur L. Pearse, a member of this Institute. Both these books are in Russian, and were prepared by the Bogoslovsk Mining Co., which owns and operates the property. Articles in many other languages have appeared dealing with various matters connected with the estate; but I know of no other general account of it. In numerous books and articles on the Urals and Siberia, however, localities are described in which somewhat similar conditions prevail. Recent papers by

Introduction Coal is found in every major geographic region through-out Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852, more than 100 small mines have opened and closed. In 1981 and 1982 production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly, the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic, and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure 1 illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and the western US. Alaska's Arctic region generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of the western US. The southcentral and southeastern regions have a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the West Coast. The Arctic, the central, and the southcentral regions have major coal fields. The southeast region has scattered occurrences. The topographic, climatic, and economic characteristics of each are different. These differences have a large effect on practical mining methods. Description of Alaskan Coal Coal deposits known in Alaska are almost all of Cretaceous or Tertiary age, much younger than the Carboniferous coal deposits of eastern and midwestern states. Consequently, most Alaskan coals have a higher moisture content and a lower heat value. Most Alaskan coals also have a much lower sulfur content. Low volatile bituminous, and anthracite coals occur in Alaska, but most Alaskan coals range downward in rank from high volatile bituminous to subbituminous and lignite. Alaskan coals are similar to coals of the northern Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. Arctic Region Northern Alaska Coal Fields Northern Alaska coal fields are by far the largest group of coal deposits in Alaska (Fig. 2). Coal-bearing rocks extend from the foothills of the Brooks Range about 160 km (100 miles) northward to within about 80 km (50 miles) of the Arctic coast. The principal known occurrences are between the Colville River and the western coast. However, coal has been found eastward almost to the Canning River and westward under the Arctic Ocean. The northern Alaska coal fields are in a series of Cretaceous rocks that suggest a deltaic depositional environment. The beds tend to occur in series of up to eight or nine beds totaling 6-9 m (20-30 ft) of coal. However, beds 6-12 m (20-40 ft) thick have been reported, and beds 1-3 m (3-10 ft) thick seem to be relatively common. Including thin seams, coal in some places makes up about 10% of the stratigraphic section. However, no area has been explored in sufficient detail to block out any large body of reserves or to make reliable estimates of the total resource. Observation points in drill holes and along river and stream banks are few and far between. Coals in northern Alaskan fields tend to range in rank from bituminous, where moderately folded and faulted in the foothills, to subbittuminous in the gently folded rocks under the coastal plain. Coals toward the eastern extremities of the coal fields may be of Tertiary age and lower in rank, but the same general correlation between degree of folding and increase in rank can be expected. THE unprecedented high price of zinc ore prevailing through the early months of 1915 caused great activity in the Joplin district of Missouri. The Media mill is conspicuous as one of the first of the new "big mills" of the district. The mill was built over a mine previously worked but abandoned in 1912 because of the leanness of the ore and the large quantity of water encountered. The ore prices prevailing-$100 a ton in June, 1915, as against $50 in 1912-favored the new undertaking. The mill was designed for good recovery so that it might operate in times of depression. In design and equipment, the mill is exclusively local in conception and construction. Former Exploitation The tract of land is a part of the large Guinn holdings; 70 acres are comprised in this particular lot, which is situated just a mile north of the center of Webb City on the Alba line of the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway. The ore lies 242 ft. below the' surface at the top of the knoll which is surrounded by the well-known properties: Black Cat, Ground Floor, Florence, Hurry-Up, Electrical and Mercantile. Since the abandonment, in 1913, of the Yellow Dog. a bit farther to the north, the Black Cat, Ground Floor and Florence workings had been flooded. However, as there was no cut through from this side into the area it was proposed to exploit, it was thought that moderate pumping facilities would take care of the water.

Magnetic separation occupies an attractive position in the field of ore beneficiation. It is a simple yet effective method, used for some 150 years and steadily growing more important. This type of beneficiation orginated in 1792, when William Fullarton was issued a British patent covering the separation of iron ore by magnetic attraction. What is magnetism, and why are some materials capable of being magnetized and others not? The study involves many unknowns, and even a partial answer to these questions would be a dissertation in solid state physics and perhaps other fields of science. But the last two decades have revealed basic facts as to why certain materials are magnetic and what happens to them when they are magnetized.

The Ce-H system was investigated in the temperature range, 573° to 1023°K, and the pressure range, 10-3 to 630 Torr, as a function of 'composition up to 72 at. pct H. Families of isothermal arid isopleth curves were plotted from the pressure-terr~perature-composition relationships. From these curves the solubility relationships were determined for the system. The isopleths are analytically represented by equilibrium dissociation pressure equations. The relative partial molal enthalpzes and entropies of solution of hydvogen in the systerrz were calculated fronz the dissociation pressure equulions and are tabulated. The integral free energies, enthalpies, and entropies of mixing in the Ce-H system were determined from the relative partial quantities and are also tabulated. The standard free energy, enthelpy, and entvopy of reaction of the dihydride phase at kcal per kcal per mole H2, and ?S° = -34. 1 cal per deg mole H2, respectively. The equilibrium dissociation pressure equation in the two-phase region is: UNTIL recently very little was known of the detailed solubility and thermodynamic relationships of the Ce-H system. Two previous investigations1,2 are noteworthy. However, significant discrepancies and omissions exist on analyzing them. The work of Mulford and Holley1 on cerium did not clearly delineate the boundaries of the two-phase region, Cess - CeH2-x. The plateau partial pressures were not thoroughly defined and were considerably displaced in pressure compared to those from the work of Warf and Korst.2 These latter authors concentrated their studies primarily from 823° to 1023°K in the pressure range of 1 to 760 Torr. No data were determined to outline the regions of primary solid solubility and the hydride phase. Also the establishment of the plateau partial pressures was rather limited in scope. In neither work was a treatment conducted of the relative partial molal enthalpies and entropies of solution of hydrogen in the single-phase regions and the integral thermodynamic quantities of mixing throughout the system. Therefore, it was the objective of this research to determine the complete equilibrium solubility relationships and thermodynamic data for the system by pressure-temperature-composition studies. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cerium metal for this study was donated by the Reno Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines. Total impurity content was 0.13 pct with only 60 ppm O. The metal was checked metallographically and contained only minor amounts of second phase compared to cerium from other sources. Specimen preparation was done in a dry box flushed with argon gas. The surface of a small rectangular piece of cerium (about 0.2 g) was filed with a clean, mill file. Final weighing was done in a tared enclosed vial containing argon gas. The specimen was then loaded quickly into the reaction chamber which was purged several times with high-purity hydrogen gas and then allowed to pump to about 10-6 Torr. The furnace was heated to the reaction temperature and the run started. The equipment used to conduct the hydriding was a Sievert's-type apparatus. Basically it consisted of a source for pure hydrogen, a precision gas-measuring burette, a heated reaction chamber, a McLeod gage, and a mercury manometer. Pure hydrogen was supplied by the thermal decomposition of uranium hydride. The 100-ml precision gas burette was graduated to 0.1-ml divisions and was used to measure the quantity of gas and admit it to the chamber. The reaction chamber was a quartz tube. Prior to each run, the cerium specimen was wrapped in a tungsten foil capsule to prevent reaction of the cerium with the quartz. Control of the temperature was achieved within ±1°K. Pressures in the manometer range were measured to ±0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10-3 to 5 Torr) to ±3 pct. The compositions of hydrogen in cerium were calculated in terms of hydrogen to cerium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be ±0.01 H/Ce ratio. The technique used to study the equilibrium pressure-temperature-composition relationships of the Ce-H system was to develop experimentally a family of isothermal curves of composition vs pressure. The range of pressure through which each isotherm was developed was from 10-9 to about 630 Torr in the temperature interval, 573° to 1023°K. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The hydriding characteristics of cerium are iso-morphous with those of the elements of the light-rare-earth group (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium) wherein the region from the dihydride to trihydride is continuously single phase.' The structure of this phase is fcc.3 The heavy rare earths form a trihydride,2 which is hcp, separated by a two-phase region from the fcc dihydride phase. The Ce-H system is represented by the family of experimental isotherms in Fig. 1. Due to the small scale required to draw the curves, the experimental points are omitted; however, a total of 240 experimental data points were taken to prepare these curves. The solubility relationships can be deduced therefrom. Three distinct regions of partial pressure and composition can be seen. The region of cerium solid solution is represented by the rapidly rising isotherms in the dilute composition range. In accordance with Gibbs Phase Rule only one solid phase, the cerium solid so-

The concentration of natural magnetites has been carried on in this country for several years, and more or less information has been collected on the subject. Various inventors, availing themselves of the magnetism which is inherent in such ores, have devised machines for separating the impurities from the ore by means of the electric current; and a greater or less degree of success has rewarded their painstaking and persevering efforts. We are now fairly in position to judge of the value of the process as applied to such material. It is not my purpose to speak of this matter further than may be required by the emergencies of the case. I shall assume that most engineers and metallurgical chemists are already acquainted with what has been done at the Chateaugay mines, at Mineville, at the Benson mines, at the Weldon and Ogdensburgh mines, and at Cranberry; although, at this latter place, there has not been so much done as we could wish. I shall not now speak of the various types of separators. From the time of William Fullarton, to whom was granted an English patent, in 1792, for separating iron-ore by the application of magnetic attraction, down to the present time, a great. many devices have been suggested, and a great many patents taken out for this purpose; but it is not necessary now to enter upon a discussion of their merits. Perhaps, at some future meeting of the Institute, after we shall have experimented further with some of the machines on the market, there may be an opportunity to contribute something to the current knowledge of the efficiency and economy of separating-machines. In this paper I propose to give, as briefly as possible, the results already reached in converting a non-magnetic ore into magnetic ore, and then concentrating it over a magnetic separator of the alternate-polarity type. INTRODUCTION Cleaning fine coal sizes utilizing air currents in machines as the primary separating medium is called dry concentration or pneumatic cleaning. In 1947 approximately 18 million tons (16.38 million mt) of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines; in 1965, 25.4 million tons (23.1 14 million mt); but in 1975, only 7 million tons (6.37 million mt). Table 11-1 shows the tonnages cleaned of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States by various types of equipment from 1938-1963. Table 11-2 shows only tonnages cleaned by pneumatic methods from 1964-1975. The decrease in tonnage to approximately 7 million tons (6.3 million mt) is due to a higher moisture content in the mined coal and the greater difficulty in cleaning the coal by air. There also was a definite trend to load raw coal at the mines, especially the slack which is the most expensive to clean due to the dewatering and drying requirements. While there have not been any applications of pneumatic cleaning in the anthracite field, its use has not been fully explored. The same is true for lignite and subbituminous coals.

INTRODUCTION The tremendous capital investment required to produce a low grade ore deposit demands a reliable answer to the question: "How much does it cost to drill a well to produce the uranium that geologists have indicated is there in the ground?" However, you will find the answers given will be many and varied, depending on whether they come from the operating company, the drilling contractor, a geologist, a reservoir engineer, purchasing agent, or whoever. Each generally considers only a limited area of the total operation. The operating company usually depends upon the drilling contractors, service companies, and consultants to supply expertise. Because it is often difficult to see the "whole picture" or even to agree upon what the "whole picture" is, planning a well program and its costs is often done piecemeal. Frequently, costs "saved" in one area of the program are needlessly spent in another, because the effect of one area upon the other was overlooked. Since the drilling fluid is such an influential part of the drilling program, it should be given utmost consideration when planning the overall program. As W. D. Lacabanne wrote in 1954: "The drilling fluid system is understandably called the heart of the rotary oil drilling rig. Any other type of rotary rig.... should benefit by the incorporation of mud fluids in the drilling scheme." And G. R. Gray mentions that "The driller recognizes the drilling fluid as one of the useful tools available to solve drilling problems." However, in minerals drilling, only in recent years has the drilling fluid been considered as more than a tool to get through special problem areas. Although there are many similarities between drilling for oil and gas and drilling for minerals, the differences in the drilling equipment used justifies designing specific fluids for the minerals drilling industry. NL Baroid/NL Industries, Inc. has been a leader in introducing such fluids and in providing technical know-how to the minerals drilling industry. The purpose of this paper is: (1) to discuss the selection of drilling fluids to meet specific drilling conditions during both exploration and production and (2) to show the interrelationship among factors present in the exploration and production phases that influence total well costs. DRILLING FLUIDS FOR DRILLING PROBLEMS The drilling fluid is a tool that can be used to improve drilling performance by improving hole cutting, cleaning, stability, and formation productivity. Properly formulated and maintained drilling fluids enable the drilling operation to be carried out with increased efficiency and lower total (overall) costs. However, it should be noted that not all drilling problems can be solved by even the most carefully prepared and maintained drilling fluids. Of the many possible drilling problems encountered in a well before reaching target depth, this paper will discuss only those most likely to be present in the shallow [61 to 610 m (200 to 2000 ft)] drilling operations in South Texas. LOST CIRCULATION Loss of circulation is the most common problem encountered in drilling. Because the losses occur under varied conditions, it is often difficult to determine the exact causes. "Lost circulation" or "lost returns" means the partial or complete loss of drilling fluid to voids in the formation. "Loss of water" while drilling with water may take place into any permeable section and should be distinguished from "water loss" or filtration of fluid through the filter cake of mud solids laid down on a permeable formation. "Loss of water" can frequently be stopped by the addition of colloidal sized clay particles such as high yield bentonites, whereas "water loss" may be controlled with organic polymers. Subsurface conditions that lead to loss of circulation can be classified as: (1) natural fractures, (2) induced fractures, (3) unconsolidated or highly permeable formations (loose gravel), and (4) cavernous formations (crevices and channels). Loss of circulation may occur whenever the borehole pressure exceeds the formation pressure. The greater the differential pressure, the more likely it is that circulation may be lost. To stop loss of whole mud, voids must be bridged so that a filter cake can be laid down on the permeable section. The plugging material must be of the proper size and shape to offer greater resistance to the fluid flow around it than the flow up the annulus. A plugging composition that satisfies these requirements may not be able to be handled by the small rig pump available.

Foster Bain, Des Moines, Iowa (communication to the Secretary):* The zinc- and lead-deposits of the Mississippi valley, which it has been my fortune to study, give particularly good examples of many of the principles of ore-deposition formulated by Prof. Van Hise. Perhaps there is nowhere clearer evidence supporting his fundamental tenet., that ore-bodies are to be regarded as a result, and as merely one of the phases, of the work of underground waters. The facts regarding the mines of the upper Mississippi valley have been given in some detail for Wisconsin by Prof. Chamberlint and, more recently, for the mines west. of the Mississippi by the Iowa Geological Survey.‡ Fortunately, also, the processes of underground water-circulation have been studied in some detail in connection with the investigation of artesian waters throughout the region.$ In Missouri and Arkansas the mines and ore-bodies have been much studied ; but the general problems of the circulation of underground waters have been neglected. During the season just closed the writer has been engaged in a re-study for the United States Geological Survey of the zinc- and lead-deposits of the Ozark region, with special reference to those of the . A strong yield point with attendant enhanced mechanical properties was found in commercially pure beryllium under certain conditions of heat treatment. Beryllium specimens also responded to both quench and strain aging treatments. Based on these results, a possible means of obtaining increased normal temperature mechanical properties is suggested. COMMERCIALLY pure beryllium has been found to exhibit the yield point phenomenon and several other aging manifestations under certain conditions of heat treatment. This behavior is not surprising in view of the present accumulation of experience regarding such effects in numerous metals; but in addition to extending this experience to include beryllium, the present study is of interest because aging effects are generally associated with the presence of small amounts of solute elements. The well known lack of tensile ductility in beryllium at normal temperatures is also considered to be due to impurities in some way. In the present investigation, the view was taken that beryllium of commercial purity (greater than 98 pct) should be considered as a dilute alloy and that precipitation phenomena may well exist which could lead to enhanced mechanical properties. In connection with this possibility, published data on the variation of mechanical properties with temperature are of interest. For example, Fig. 1 illustrates the variation of ductility (percentage of elongation) and ultimate strength as a function of temperature for beryllium of various histories.* Although these curves are somewhat schematic in nature, they clearly indicate the possibility that precipitation of an unstable phase and/or aging effects occur during tests in the region 400" to 700°C. The existence of such behavior should be recognized as affecting the properties of the commercial material and perhaps can be employed advantageously. Experimental Method All testing was done at room temperature using a Baldwin universal testing machine. A microformer extensometer was used in conjunction with a micro-former-type stress-strain recorder. All tests were conducted at constant loading rate, the slowest rates being used. This corresponded to 120 lb per min in the 1200 lb full scale range and 300 lb per min in the 6000 lb full scale range. After the rate of loading was set in the elastic range of the material during the early part of the test, no further adjustments were made, allowing the test to proceed at that setting. In the plastic region of the curve above the yield region, strain rates of from 0.002 to 0.006 in. per min were regularly obtained. All experimentation was carried out on specimens machined from the same lot of beryllium, lot No. Y5036BP. Table I shows the chemical analysis as furnished by the supplier, Brush Beryllium Co., as well as the standard specifications to which commercial beryllium is produced. Both 1/4 in. thick hot pressed plate and ½ in. round hot pressed and warm extruded rods were obtained. The history of the material is reported to be as follows: 1—Beryllium metal plates, produced from a standard hot pressed QMV beryllium metal block 4x15x40 in., were cut off and finished machined to 1/4x6x12 in. flat plates. The original hot pressed block was made by hot pressing —200 mesh vacuum cast attri-tioned powder at about 1050°C under vacuum. 2—Beryllium rod was hot pressed and warm extruded. Extrusion billets were machined from the regular hot pressed blocks followed by extrusion at 425°C. The extrusion was done without jacketing, and graphite was used as a lubricant. The rods were then straightened at 720 °C, after which they were annealed at 800°C for 15 min. Both flat tensile specimens and round tensile specimens were tested. The former were machined from the plate stock into standard specimens according to specifications shown in ASTM E8-52T. The nominal cross-section was 0.25x0.500 in. and the gage length was 2 in. MILL planning must include electrical drives and a system to supply them. These should be considered at the time metallurgical and mechanical plans are being made. Because it is convenient, flexible, reliable, and economical, electricity is the accepted source for powering mill concentrating equipment. Ore-treating mills have grown to the point where a single mill has been built using 360 motors ranging from 1 to 1000 hp and totaling 50,000 hp. Such a system of electrical drives can be scattered over a square mile and employ 4000 to 220 v. Drive Motor Characteristics: Since ore processing is predominantly a continuous operation, very few of its drives require wide speed variation after initial adjustment. Consequently squirrel cage, wound rotor, and synchronous alternating current motors are most often used.

Flotation experiments using stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, and ricinoleic acids and naturally occuring products rich in these acids as collectors for calcite are described. The results confirm the validity of the rule of Hukki and Vartiainen relating the collecting power and unsaturation of the C18 acids. Reasons for this relationship are discussed and a close relationship between mineral depression and critical micelle concentration is reported. It has long been recognized that the unsaturated fatty acids are in general superior flotation collectors to their saturated homologues. Whereas earlier workers concentrated on saturated and monoethe-noid acids, recent investigations have centered on oleic, linoleic, linolenic, and the substituted mono-ethenoid acid: ricinoleic. From studies of the collecting properties of palmitic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids on ilmenite, rutile, hematite, and magnetite, Hukki and Vartiai-nenl concluded that the collecting power of fatty acids increased with unsaturation of the hydrocarbon chain. Sun, Snow, and Purcel12 investigated the collecting properties of unsaturated fatty acids as collectors for phosphate ores and concluded that the collecting power increased with increasing unsaturation of the hydrocarbon chain up to two double bonds and that further unsaturation decreased the collecting power. More recently Sun3 studied the collecting power of the C18 fatty acids stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic on 37 minerals. The results of these experiments with a few exceptions showed that the collecting power of the acids increased in the order stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic. The relative collecting powers of linoleic and linolenic acids were in many cases altered by the cleanliness of the mineral surface prior to flotation. Sun concluded that linolenic acid may become oxidized by atmospheric oxygen during flotation, a reaction which would reduce its effectiveness as a collector. This deduction is supported by Gaudin and Cole4 who concluded that oleic and linoleic acids do not undergo appreciable oxidation of the double bonds during flotation but that the linolenic acid double bonds are measurably affected. The most complete investigation on the influence of hydrocarbon chain unsaturation on the collecting properties of fatty acids is that of Kivalo and Lehm~svaara.~ These workers using linolenic acid of a higher purity than Hukki and Vartiainen showed that this acid was superior to oleic and linoleic acids as a collector for magnetite. They also found that ricinoleic acid was a more effective collector for this mineral than the other acids investigated, an observation particularly apparent at high collector concentrations. Seeking to explain the superiority of the unsaturated acids these authors considered the effects of critical micelle concentration, surface activity, hydrolysis, and cross sectional area of the hydrocarbon chain in relation to unsaturation. Using what, according to the results of Caviere are erroneous surface tensions of the soap solutions of these acids, they concluded that the surface activity decreases and the critical micelle concentration increases with increasing unsaturation. In view of the data of Cavier, whose results show that surface activity of these soaps increases with unsaturation, the deductions of Kivalo and Lehmusvaara are open to criticism. The degree of hydrolysis of the soap solutions as measured by Kivalo and Lehmusvaara decreases as the unsaturation of the fatty acid increases, a result which helps to explain the superiority of unsaturated acids as collectors. In view of the superiority of unsaturated acids as collectors for many minerals, attention has been directed towards the utilization of fatty acid raw materials such as tall oils and linseed oils which contain considerable quantities of these acids. I. EARLY FURNACES. COPPER blast-furnace construction in America has long recognized a general standard in the rectangular mater jacketed shaft with separate forehearth. The details, however, and especially those relating to shaft dimensions, have had to meet a great variety of conditions, and show no uniformity whatever. Selecting a few of the present day Western plants, we find furnace lengths varying from 12.5 to 87 ft., widths at tuyere level from 42 to 84 in., and heights above tuyeres from 5 ft. 4 in. to 22 ft. 4 in. ; and comparing present designs with those of the past, we meet contrasts no less striking. Unlike its transverse section, the length of a furnace has come to depend rather on the size of unit desired than on the requirements of smelting ; and if the question of length be ignored, several of the various existing designs can be grouped together on the basis of a common transverse section. This section, having a width at tuyere level of 56 in. and a height above tuyeres of 18 ft., was developed at Great Falls, and the story of its development contains some interesting features. Increasing emphasis is being placed on the necessity for obtaining reasonably accurate estimates of the physical properties of reservoir fluids well in advance of more accurate laboratory data. One such factor is the isothermal coefficient of expansion of an undersaturated hydrocarbon liquid which may be contained in a particular reservoir. This coefficient, or liquid "compressibility", has often been assumed to be relatively insensitive and nearly constant. Although this assumption may be nearly correct in the case of high specific gravity liquids, it cannot apply in the case of medium to low specific gravity liquids. Any treatment of the nature of liquid compressibilities must give consideration to the variable nature of the isothermal expansion coefficient and the fact that it can be both pressure sensitive and temperature sensitive. The isothermal coefficient of expansion, or compressibility, of a substance is defined as -c = 1/V (?V/?p)T......(1) The value of Eq. 1 may be approximated for a finite pressure change by using the well-known relation, c = V1 - V1/Ve (p2-p1), ........(2) in which p1 > p1 and V2 > V2 and V1 + V2/2. The instantaneous compressibility may also be estimated from the slope of a curve on which log V is plotted vs pa. In this instance, it has been shown that c = In V1/V2/p2-p1 ...........(3) Eq. 3 may be used for variable compressibilities by plot-ting V vs p on semi-log paper. In this case, the instan-taneous or point compressibility is c = 2.303 m.......... . (4) in which m is the slope of the curve at a point in log cycles per psi. ISOTHERMAL COMPRESSIBILITY OF UNDERSATURATED LIQUID In the case of gases, the compressibility has been defined by Muskat' and others as Co = 1/p - ?z/z?p ..........(5) This was later generalized through application of the theorem of corresponding states' to co = 1/pr - (?z/z?pr) T8 ........(6) in which c, is defined as the pseudo-reduced compres-sibility and is numerically equal to (c.p,) and the sign is arbitrarily changed for mathematical convenience. Eq. 6 is general and applies to gases and liquids. In the case of liquids, c. = c1,pe, but if Eq. 6 is used, values of z and ?z/?p, must be determined for the liquid in question. The difficulty of obtaining accurate values of ?z/?p,, particularly in the region where T, is approaching 1.00, was pointed out in the previous paper'. This method of approach is unreliable for extension into computations of liquid compressibilities. On the other hand, c, can also be defined as follows: - Cr = 1/Vr (?Vr/?pr) Tr ......(7) and from which, Cr = 1/pr (?pr/?pr) Tr .....(8) In accordance with the theorem of corresponding states, Vr = V/Vr, p, = p/pr and pr = p/pr. Ref. 2 pro-vides an excellent source of reduced density, reduced pressure and reduced temperature data for a wide variety of fluids. For the purpose of this investigation, the set of fluids2 having ze = 0.27 was chosen because it in-cludes most of the heavier hydrocarbons usually found in those complex mixtures loosely defined as "reservoir oils". Data on undersaturated liquids in Ref. 2 were rearranged to conform with Eq. 8. To simplify the computation of cr, the isothermal p, data were plotted vs the log of pr, in which case for any straight line or tangent cr = 1/M pr pr .....(9)

Council held a well attended two-day conference at Globe, Ariz., March 19 and 20; followed by two days of mine-rescue maneuvers at the Old Dominion mine in cooperation with the Globe-Miami District Mine Rescue and First Aid Association and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. C. L. Colburn of the Bureau had general charge of the arrangements and was chairman of the conference. All sessions were held in the Old Dominion Library. SINCE their comparatively recent development, the alloys of cadmium with silver and copper or nickel, and of cadmium with nickel alone, have been used somewhat extensively as liners for connecting rod bearings and main bearings of internal-combustion engines. In applications where, owing to high hearing loads and elevated operating temperatures, the life of hearings made from tin-hale or lead-base alloys has been undesirably short, cadmium alloys have demonstrated considerable advantage. In applications where, because of deflection of the crankshaft or bearing supports, copper-lead bearing metals have resulted in scored shafts, cadmium alloys have been operated successfully. The somewhat serious drawback to these alloys in hearing service has been that they, in common with copper-lead and certain lead alloys, are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of lubricants containing organic acids. These acids may be fatty acids (such as oleic acid) derived from animal or vegetable oils that sometimes have been compounded with engine lubricants, or they may be compounds of an acid nature developed by the oxidation of some petroleum oils under operating conditions. The result of such acid attack on hearings is illustrated by the photograph, Fig. 1. The petroleum oils that are most readily oxidized to a corrosive condition, and the operating conditions under which such oxidation most readily occurs, are now rather well known among the technical organizations of both the petroleum and automotive industries. While means have been developed for inhibiting petroleum oils against such acid formation, the knowledge that this condition may be encountered has been a factor in restricting the wider use of cadmium alloys as engine bearings. It has appeared, therefore, that their value and use would be enhanced if they could be made corrosion-resistant to a degree compatible with the most severe operating requirements. The structure and morphology of thermoelastic and burst type martensitic phases that form upon cooling in Cu-Zn-Si p phase alloys have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The martensitic phases are composed of a lamellar mixture of two close-packed structures with different stacking sequence, namely ABCBCACAB (orthorhombic) and ABC (fcc). Striations within thermoelastic martensite are most likely produced during interaction with impinging burst-type martensite and not as a consequence of secondary shears. In a study of the martensitic transformation in ternary Cu-Zn based 0 phase alloys1 the dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, M,, with composition shows variations for elements within a constant valence subgroup and between different subgroups. Such variations are not reflected in a change in habit plane, which is approximately the same for each ternary alloy, namely in the vicinity of (2, 11, 12 Ip. The fact that the habit plane remained constant, despite large differences in M, temperature and electron concentration, suggested2 that the crystal structures of the martensitic phases could be nearly the same. Crystal structures of ternary Cu-Zn based martensites have been determined recently for alloys containing the three-valent elements gallium3, 4 and aluminm. The present studies have been made to examine the structures and morphology of the martensitic phase in ternary Cu-Zn based alloys containing a four-valent element, silicon. I) PROCEDURE Two alloys were prepared by melting and casting weighed quantities of the component high-purity metals in sealed quartz tubes under half an atmosphere of argon. They were subsequently remelted by levitation under a protective atmosphere of argon. After allowing for losses of zinc as determined by the difference in weight before and after casting, the compositions in atomic percent of both alloys were established to be Cu-33.5 Zn-1.8 Si and Cu-27 Zn-5.0 Si. These alloys were homogenized in the P-phase field for 2 days at 800" C. Bulk samples consisted of a martensite phase at room temperature, the M, temperature being approximately 30' and 200" for the 1.8 and the 5 pct Si alloys, respectively. Thin disks were cut from the ingots using a spark machine, and they were heated for 5 min at 800' and quenched into water in order to obtain martensite. These slices were thinned chemically at room temperature in a solution consisting of 40 parts HN03, 50 part H3PO4, and 10 parts HC1 and thinned further electrolytically by the Window technique, using a voltage of 15 to 25 v and a mixture of 1 part HN03 and 2 parts methanol, which was kept at a temperature near -30° c. Foils were examined by transmission electron microscopy using a Philips EM 200 electron microscope. 11) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) Structure and Morphology. Fig. 1 shows the martensitic phase in the alloy containing 1.8 at. pct Si. This phase is composed of contiguous platelets, each containing striations. The direction of the striations changes at the boundary between individual platelets. These internal markings resemble the striations that are usually identified as stacking faults, as for example in Cu-A1 martensites6-a or the lamellar mixture of two close-packed phases in Cu-Zn-Ga marten-sites.3p '9 lo In the present alloys, selected-area diffraction experiments have been obtained in order to determine the nature of the striations. Figs. 2(a), (61, and (c) are electron diffraction patterns of an area inside a single martensite plate. Fig. 2(a) contains diffraction spots which correspond to two close-packed structures with different stacking sequences, namely ABCBCACAB (orthorhombic) and ABC (fcc). Spots belonging only to the fcc structure are indicated by arrows. By tilting the foil either the orthorhombic structure, Fig. 2(b), or the cubic structure shown in Fig. 2(c) may be obtained. When the foil is oriented so that only the diffraction spots of the orthorhornbic structure are present, bright-field illumination shows small lamellae, as seen in Fig. 3. In this figure the lamellae that belong to the fcc structure are bright bands inside the dark extinction contours of the orthorhombic structure. The boundaries of the lamellae are parallel to the basal planes of the orthorhombic structure and to the {Ill} planes of the cubic structure, the close-packed directions of both structures being parallel. The 5 pct Si alloy shows similar features as those described for the 1.8 at. pct Si alloy.

IN December, 1936, several drilling tests were made at the Hubert O. De Beck feldspar mine at Green Mountain, N. C., to determine the most efficient type of hammier-drill bit and drilling method for use at this particular property. This mine is well recognized as having the hardest rock in the Burnsville - Spruce Pine feldspar district and drilling costs always have been high. Local structural deformation has greatly distorted and warped the normal crystalline structure of the feldspar so the rock is much tougher than usual. In studying drilling methods and bit types, available literature was re¬viewed but little specific data could be found on the direct comparison of four-point and six-point drill bits so the following results may be of some interest.

Production control in the petroleum industry may be discussed under three general heads: engineering, legal, and economic. Though the problems that fall under the respective heads of engineering, law, and economics are separate, they are dependent and interrelated. The present study will deal with the economic phases of production control and only incidentally with the legal phases as they affect the economics of the problem. No one of these forms of control is more important than the others. The engineers have performed their service well, and although there are many problems of engineering control yet to be solved, they are not pressing. Legal control is a problem for the legislatures and the courts to solve. The petroleum industry is such a comparatively young industry and the legal problems are of such recent origin that the courts have not yet been called on to settle all the issues and the legislatures still have before them bills concerned with the regulation of the industry. Economic control of production in the petroleum industry is a highly desirable goal but it has not yet been completely achieved. Since the first commercial well was drilled in 1859, there have been recurring periods of overproduction. (Over- production will be used here to describe a condition wherein so much crude oil is available that a satisfactory and reasonable price is not received for the product.) THE development of a geological department as an integral part of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. in the Birmingham district, Ala-bama, in 1908 was an innovation probably unique for any mining organ-ization south of the Ohio River, At that time a few of the oil companies were starting geological departments, but there were no geologists among the larger industrial organizations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. had been a substantial producer of pig iron for many years and was just getting a start in the manufacture of steel products from the pig iron. It had large acreages of coal land, ore land and timber land, but there was lacking the detailed knowledge of the possible mineral resources of much (of its territory, and this territory at that time covered an area in the neighborhood of 500,000 acres in the states of Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. Those responsible for the operations of the mining properties, not being familiar with the kind of help that might be expected from geologic work, were decidedly skeptical of the utility of the work. Therefore it was necessary to develop cooperation with the mining organization, by not infringing upon its functions, and by developing the work in such a manner as to demonstrate to the mining department its practical utility. In the first instance the man responsible for a mining operation is apt to assume the attitude that the geologist is a blockader, because the geologist, unfortunately, is obliged to point out difficulties in the carrying out of mining operations in the way originally planned. He points out the dangers of mining out one coal or metal seam at the ultimate expense of an upper or lower seam, and he develops structural features, such as faults and folds, which call to the attention of the mining operator diffi-culties in his future operations, which the latter had not anticipated. Eventually, however, -the value of having these data became ap to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., and the operators not only welcomed the geological work and cooperated fully in its acquisition of essential information, but reached the point of asking assistance and advice; and complete coordination of the two activities has existed for many years.
