1910, hundreds of thousands of dollars of work and equipment in a 1500-foot shaft, crosscuts and pumping had found only copper-lean pyrite in two cross- cuts, and nothing in a third. Going aimlessly along the third crosscut one day, after looking at the barren face I happened to notice a dark spot in the white limestone, near the floor on one side. I picked, and found it was a little triangle of rich chalcopyrite. Next day I took Bill Gohring, then mine superintendent, in to see it. He said nothing else had succeeded so we might as well try that. The new drift broke into a full face of high grade copper ore in the first round, and continued in rich ore for 2200 feel broken only by a couple of short stretches of lean pyrite. The earlier crosscuts had happened to cut these lean areas. By means of a theoretical extension of the Cr-C temperature relation in molten chromium steels to low chromium contents and by a correlation of the ratios of chromium to iron in the slag and metal, a method has been developed for estimating the amount of metallic oxidation during the oxidizing period of a chromium steel heat. Application of this method has indicated that due to temperature limitations metallic oxidation may be excessive for very low carbon steels charged with more than a small amount of chromium. IN the melting and refining of chromium steels the oxidation of carbon to a low level is accompanied by the oxidation of chromium and iron in considerable amounts. For the subsequent recovery of chromium and associated iron from the slag, the amounts of metal oxidized must be known for efficient reduction and control of composition. Further, in order to arrive at an accurate understanding of the process, so that chromium-bearing scrap can be used effectively, information is required on the relation between composition of the charge and weight of metal oxidized to reach the desired carbon content. Crafts and Rassbach1 recently developed an empirical relation between chromium, iron, and manganese oxidized per ton of steel charged, and final carbon content and temperature. This relation did not show any dependence on amount of chromium charged. However, it was felt that such a dependence might be present, so a further analysis of the data was undertaken. Cr-C Relation at Low Chromium Levels Crafts and Rassbach's results were based on temperatures estimated from the Cr-C relation previously established experimentally by Hilty,2 and on a single temperature observation (immersion thermocouple) on a heat made at low temperature from a charge of carbon steel scrap containing only a small amount of residual chromium. The temperatures estimated from the Cr-C relation were for heats charged with chromium-bearing scrap and which contained substantial amounts of chromium (2 to 10 pct) at the end of the oxidizing period. No data, other than that from the low temperature heat just mentioned, were available for the low and intermediate chromium ranges. In order to extend the range in which temperature may be estimated, the Cr-C relation requires further consideration. The Cr-C relation, expressed as suggests that carbon is zero at zero chromium in the bath. This is obviously absurd, because as chromium approaches zero the carbon content must approach the limit established by the Fe-C-O equilibrium. It is evident, therefore, that the Cr-C relation as defined by Eq. 1 is not valid below some minimum chromium content that may vary with temperature. On the other hand, it is probable that any such limiting chromium content is less than 4 pct at 3200°F, since the experimental data from which the Cr-C relation was derived included several observations at that level with no deviation. In any event, it is apparent that further evaluation of the results presented by Crafts and Rassbach is dependent upon a means for estimating the Cr-C temperature relation in the low chromium region. From the observations of Chen and Chipman9 and thermodynamic data given in Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking,4 the following relation can be calculated for melts containing small amounts of chromium and carbon assuming a carbon monoxide pressure of 1 atm: % Cr -21,250 K' = (%C)2; logK1 == —t— +13.88 [2] Moreover, by plotting Eq. 2 for any given temperature on cartesian coordinates, it can be extrapolated graphically to the limiting carbon content at zero chromium for the specified temperature without serious complications. In order properly to evaluate the data related to geomagnetic surveys, it is highly desirable to have all the available information concerning the magnetic properties of the involved media. This is true of surface as well as subsurface formations and becomes of increasing importance as advancement in instrumental and interpretative technique permits the analysis of relatively slight magnetic reflections of buried masses. Since the magnitude and areal distribution of the usually complex resultant magnetic field at the surface of the earth is a function of the susceptibility1 of the involved matter, it necessarily follows that susceptibility determinations will afford valuable data for geophysical correlation. The present method was developed to meet the need for routine analysis of specimens in the geomagnetic laboratory where it was felt that general utility, ruggedness, ease of manipulation and reproducibility of results were of greater importance than extreme sensitivity. Electric Circuits The electric circuits are illustrated diagrammatically in Fig. 1. Current from the battery, B, passes through the variable resistance R1, reversing switch S1, double-break key K1 to switches S2 and S3. From S2 it flows through variable resistance R2, ammeter A2, to the primary coils of the fixed mutual inductance Mf and variable mutual inductance M,. . From S3 it passes through variable resistance R3, ammeter As, to the primary winding of the fixed mutual inductance MI, which is designed to receive the test sample. S URFACE effects in the cleavage of brittle crystals have been known for some oftime,1, 2 but our knowledge of surface effects in the plastic deformation of crystals is of relatively recent origin. In 1936, Roscoe9 eported his observations comparing oxidized and clean cadmium crystals. He found that cadmium crystals 1/2 mm in diam when covered by an oxide film less than 1200 atoms thick had critical shear stresses about twice those for clean crystals. This effect is anomalous in that it cannot be caused by the inherent shear strength of a normal oxide film. Either an interaction between the film and the crystal causes the large increase in strength, or the oxide film has an abnormal mechanical strength. Several authors since Roscoe have studied surface effects in crystal plasticity. A complete review of the literature will not be presented, but most of the results may be summarized as follows: 1—The critical shear stress for slip is increased markedly by very thin oxide films on zinc4 and cadmium crystals;" ' also, the entire stress-strain curve is raised by an oxide coating;3,4 both effects increase with decreasing specimen radius. 2—Surface active substances such as oleic acid destroy the hardening effect of oxide films.4, 6-8 The time required for the reduction of the hardening effect to begin increases with the viscosity of the solvent4~ 3—There has been dispute in recent years about the effects of surface active substances themselves on plastic deformation. Rehbinder, Lichtmann, and Maslenikov9 state that surface active substances reduce the strength of metal monocrystals markedly and increase the number of slip lines per unit length at a given strain. The effect varies with orientation for tin crystals being smallest for x, = 0, largest for x, = 45", and intermediate as x, + 90°.10 Several workers claim to have disproved the results of Rehbinder')"." but Rehbinder and Lichtmann9 have defended themselves and Masing with his collaborators" has confirmed some of Rehbinder's results. 4—Immersion of metal specimens in electrolytes such as sodium chloride reduces their strength12,13' and subsequent cathodic polarization increases the strength reduction. For noble metals, the strength reduction occurs for both anodic and cathodic polarization," increasing with increasing polarizing voltage. 5—Electroplated copper coatings effect the creep rates of zinc monocrystals. Poly crystals are not affected." 6—Immersion in dilute acid destroys the hardening effect of an hydroxide film. When an acid solution is applied to a steadily creeping crystal, the creep rate jumps to a very high value and then drops gradually to a steady value which is higher than the initial steady rate.*' " If the hydroxide film to be removed is very thin (about 100A thick), the creep rate does not change measurably, but a small rapid strain-increment is observed when dilute acid is applied." 7—Crystal plasticity depends on specimen dimensions. This was observed by Lichtmann and Ven-stroml" for monocrystalline tin and by Andrade and Kennedy" for polycrystalline lead. 8—Immerson of copper crystals in mercury has no effect on their stress-strain curves.'" 9—Bombardment of creeping cadmium crystals with a particles which penetrate the surface to only 0.005 mm may increase their creep rates as much as five times.''' The experiments which will be described in this paper pertain to: (a) the effect of a crystal's shape on its plastic deformation, and (b) the effect of metallic surface films on plastic deformation. For the work pertaining to (a), crystals of zinc, tin, and lead were grown which had various shapes. These were tested in simple tension. Macroscopic rotations about the tension axis which are unpredicted by the classical theory of slip were observed, and serrated edges were observed in tin crystals. For the work pertaining to (b), the effects of evaporated and electrodeposited films of copper, nickel, gold, and zinc on the mechanical properties of zinc, tin, and lead crystals were determined. The films influenced both slip and twinning of the crystals in creep and tensile tests. Experimental Details Chemically pure zinc, tin, and lead were used in this investigation. A study of the fatigue properties of several grades of commercially pure titanium has established that the strain-aging process is of minor importance in the development of a fatigue limit and a relatively high fatigue strength ratio. Metallographic observations and damping measurements at room temperature indicate that striations are able to spread from grain to grain only at stress levels above the fatigue limit. This suggests that the fatigue limit represents the stress above which large-scale dislocation unlocking takes place. Fatigue tests on annealed material at - 60" and - 196" c showed that under conditions when a thermally activated diffusion process would be suppressed the fatigue limit is not eliminated. Prestraining at room temperature did not have a detrimental effect on fatigue strength at room temperature but a decrease was recorded at — 60°C. This is further evidence that initial dislocation locking is a important strengthening mechanism. TITANIUM and titanium alloys have S-N curves with a definite fatigue limit, and a high ratio of fatigue limit to UTS can be attained. Other materials which show similar fatigue characteristics are mild steel and some Al-Mg alloys. The fatigue limit of these materials has been associated with their strain-aging capacity. It is well-known that commercial-purity titanium contains interstitial impurities which can give rise to a sharp yield point, and a small strain-aging effect following static strain has been demonstrated.7 This type of aging reaction is differentiated from the dynamic aging process when aging occurs during plastic deformation, and which is generally observed at elevated temperatures. In a titanium at room temperature, dislocation locking is associated with the interaction of interstitial oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon atoms with dislocations. Ehr-lich has shown that the distortion produced by introduction of these atoms into the hcp lattice has no shear stress component and hence there is no interaction between the stress field and the screw component of a dislocation. Thus the dislocations as a whole are only weakly locked. It is clear that strain-aging effects in hcp a titanium will be much less pronounced than those observed in bcc iron and steel. In recent years, the attribution of the fatigue limit solely to strain aging has been questioned. It has been pointed out that a definite fatigue limit is observed at temperatures as low as -196°C in some titanium alloys,' and strain aging is not expected to be effective at this temperature. The role of initial locking of dislocations in determining fatigue behavior has been examined in low-carbon steel by Oates and Wilson. They showed that under conditions in which the aging potential is low the factors which control the buildup of local stresses and hence affect dislocation unlocking, e.g., grain size, are important. There are indications that other metals can have a definite fatigue limit with no established strain-aging capacity, an example being magnesium12 which has the same crystal structure as a titanium. The spread of plasticity from grain to grain in hexagonal metals may be more difficult than in cubic metals because of the limited number of slip systems in the former, and this may account in part for their fatigue behavior. The present work was undertaken to elucidate the relative importance of crystal structure, strain aging, and initial dislocation locking in determining the properties of commercially pure titanium when subjected to cyclic stressing. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Three grades of commercial-purity titanium were used and a material of lower interstitial content was prepared by melting high-purity Japanese sponge titanium (referred to as H.P. Ti). The compositions and typical mechanical properties of the materials are shown in Table I. Fatigue tests were made in push-pull (zero mean stress) using an Amsler Vibraphore machine at a frequency of about 160 cps. Two types of fatigue specimen were used—one with a waisted gage length for determination of S-N curves and the other with a parallel gage length for metallographic studies and damping measurements. After careful machining and mechanical polishing, all specimens were electropolished prior to fatigue testing. The electrolyte consisted of 10 parts methyl alcohol, 6 parts 2-butoxyethanol, and 1 part perchloric acid (SG 1.54) and it was maintained at a temperature of -10" to -20°C during polishing. Tests at room temperature were normally carried out with the specimen immersed in a silicone oil bath which could be heated for elevated-temperature tests.

AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER and in greater or less amounts, gold has been mined in at least 40 of California's 58 counties. It may not be inappropriate, by way of introduction, to give a brief historical statement relative to her production of the yellow metal. The presence of gold in the gravels of San Gabriel, San Francisquito, and other streams near Los Angeles, was known and they were worked in a small way by the Indians, at least as early as. 1841' and possibly 1820. -On March 2, 1844, Don Manuel Castanares, deputy for California to the Congress of Mexico, reported' to his government that placers near Los Angeles had yielded up to December, 1.843, a total of 2000 oz. of gold dust, most of which had been sent (via Mexico) to tile United States Mint at Philadelphia.

The natural effect of large ingot-size should be to increase segregation. I have previously pointed1 to the excessive segregation in many large ingots as tending to confirm this, but I have shown that in case of ingots less than 16 in. square this expected effect of ingot-size is liable to masked by that of Note.—The "maximum enrichment" of each ingot, i.e., the excess of the richest spot over the average of the whole ingot, is first calculated in percentage of that average. The average of the maximum enrichment of the several ingots of a given group is the abscissa in Fig. 1. The number beside each spot tells the number of cases which that spot represents. Under these conditions we should expect that, if large ingot-size really does tend to increase segregation, this effect would be shown by taking the average of large numbers of cases, so that the effects of these other variables might off-set and cancel each other.

Fibrous microstructures and their development have been studied by metallography and by hardness and quantitative metallographic measurements. Thin, curved grains were observed in transverse sections of commercial tungsten wire and were developed in laboratory-drawn iron wire at reductions greater than about 70 pct. The unusual grain shapes are attributed to the nonuniform mode of deformation of the grains associated with the characteristic [I101 preferred orientation that develops in bcc metals during drawing. Transverse sections of heavily swaged iron wire showed a ospiral nebulao structure that appears to result from the elliptical shape of the cross section of the swaging dies and their rotary motion. Hardness and quantitative metallographic results show unusual trends that parallel the changes in microstructure. Other phenomena are considwed in light of the results, including the strength of fine wires of bcc metals, ocylindricalo textures, and the ductility of fibrous tungsten. 1 HE microstructure of tungsten wire in a longitudinal section shows grains highly elongated in the working direction, giving the appearance of a bundle of parallel fibers, Fig. l(a). Wires of tungsten and other bcc metals show a pronounced preferred orientation in which a [I101 direction is parallel to the wire axis.l The microstructure and texture of tungsten develop during warm working (working above room temperature but below the recrystallization temperature) into wire by swaging and drawing. Fibrous tungsten so produced has limited but useful room-temperature ductility, whereas annealed tungsten is brittle at room temperature. During an investigation of the effect of recovery annealing on the substructure of commerical 0.030 in. diam tungsten wire, it was found that transverse sections of the as-received material showed thin, curved grains, Fig. 1(b), instead of the expected equiaxed grains. The fact that Figs. l(a) and (b) show different sections of the same material at the same magnification is at first disconcerting, because the long dimension of the curved grains in the transverse section is several times the average fiber width in the longitudinal section. However, a longitudinal section cuts most of the curved grains across their narrow dimension, giving the appearance of a multitude of narrow fibers. On the other hand, the plane of a longitudinal section occasionally includes a long dimension of a curved grain, resulting in a broad ofibero, such as A in Fig. l(a). EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS To investigate the origin of fibrous microstructures and particularly the unusual transverse-section structure of tungsten, rods of iron (also bcc) were drawn and swaged in the laboratory. One rod of annealed Ferrovac E was drawn in six steps to a total reduction in area of 87 pct (0.10 to 0.036 in. diam), and a second rod was swaged to the same reduction, using approximately the same reduction steps. Longitudinal and transverse sections of the swaged and drawn iron wires are shown in Fig. 2, for reductions in area of 39, 73, and 87 pct. A fibrous microstructure in longitudinal section is first evident at 73 pct reduction, and it is further developed at 87 pct reduction. The grains in transverse section remain equiaxed until about 73 pct reduction, when they become somewhat elongated and curved. At 87 pct reduction, the drawn wire shows thin, curved grains in the transverse section, similar to those observed in tungsten. Rock-drill steel has an important bearing on costs in many mining operations, both directly and indirectly. Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, maintenance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted. Experimental Work During the late spring of 1939, experiments were undertaken at Homestake in reducing changes in drill-steel gauge from ? in. to 1/16 in. With a platinum electrode the Eh-pH response in aqueous systems follows an empirical relation [Eh = E- 0.059 pH](1) where E usually carries a value between 0.8 and 0.9 v. The same potential (E) is observed with a number of other noble metal electrodes in the absence of surface poisoning and of other well-defined redox couples. Many sulfide mineral electrodes also respond in a similar manner in solutions containing their respective ions over wide pH ranges, especially in the alkaline pH region. Such a parallelism between noble metal and sulfide mineral electrodes points to certain implications of their surface conditions, and the flotation and leaching behaviors of sulfide minerals under aerated conditions may be inferred with respect to the foregoing Eh-pH response. Comparison of Sulfide Mineral and Noble Metal Electrodes [Fig. 1] shows the Eh-pH response of pyrite, galena, chalcocite, and pyrrhotite electrodes, reported by Sato, and some experimental points obtained with a platinum electrode in distilled water. INTRODUCTION The major mining operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company are located in the Sudbury Basin. Around the rim of this geo- logical formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located eleven under- ground mines of the Company, two of which are on standby. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario at Shebandowan, 1127 Km (700 miles) northwest of Sudbury. In 1980 ore production totalled 10.6 x 10 mt (11.7 million tons) from underground and open pit operations. Underground mining methods include blasthole, vertical retreat, sublevel caving, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Inco reduction operations in the Sudbury area include two concentrators, one smelter, one iron ore recovery plant, a copper refinery a nickel refinery and a high purity plate rolling mill. As well, an electrolytic nickel refinery is located on Lake Erie at Port Colborne, near Niagara Falls. In the Sudbury District, Inco employees total 14,278 of whom 6,490 are directly employed in the mining and milling operations. I T H DRILLING Background - The use of long blastholes in underground operations at Inco mines in the Sudbury district started more than 30 years ago at the Levack Mine. At that time, diamond drills were used to mine ore by open stoping and for pillar recovery. By the 1950's the concept had been extended to all mines. The heavy percussion drill was also developed by this time and led to the acceptance of the 11.43 cm (4% in.) piston diameter drifter for bar and arm and fan drill applications. The use however, of the nominal 5.08 cm (2 in.) diameter blastholes drilled radially from the level or sublevel causes overdrilling at the periphery. As well, the smaller holes are subject to hole deviation, are difficult to drill beyond 38.1 m (125 ft.) and require the need for several drilling horizons or sublevels. The need to improve blasthole stoping techniques and our experience with large diameter blastholes in open pit mining led to the trial of an I T H drill in 1962. The test was unsuccessful however, since button bits were not available at the time and the tungsten carbide cross bit experienced short life, gauge loss, and caused hole deviation and poor penetration rates. The successful application of the raise borer beginning in 1964 and the ability to drill 20.32 cm (8 in.) to 27.94 cm (11 in.) diameter pilot holes led to the development of smaller, more portable, rotary drills for blasthole mining. As a result, a mining method based on the use of 20 cm (7 718 in.) diameter, 60.1 m (200 ft.) long rotary blastholes was developed and tested successfully at our C.C.North Mine. Between 1972, when the method was first tested, and 1973 over 4572 m (15000 ft.) of large holes were drilled with rotary drills in the recovery of 175,960 mt (194000 tons) of primary stoping and pillar remnants. A new mining method was developed that made use of this large hole drilling equipment. Instead of longhole carbide drilling by bar-and-arm or fan drill set-ups at sublevels, the large diameter holes were drilled full stope height from the top sill, which substantially reduced development, drilling time and improved fragmentation. These drills however, were difficult to move and set-up, and had a high maintenance cost and low productivity. The capital outlay and extensive technical development required to improve these drills and reduce the high drilling costs however, was economically unattractive. As a result, a mining method based on the use of 20 cm (7 718 in.) diameter, 60.1 m (200 ft.) long rotary blastholes was developed and tested successfully at our C.C.North Mine. Between 1972, when the method was first tested, and 1973 over 4572 m (15000 ft.) of large holes were drilled with rotary drills in the recovery of 175,960 mt (194000 tons) of primary stoping and pillar remnants. A new mining method was developed that made use of this large hole drilling equipment. Instead of longhole carbide drilling by bar-and-arm or fan drill set-ups at sublevels, the large diameter holes were drilled full stope height from the top sill, which substantially reduced development, drilling time and improved fragmentation. These drills however, were difficult to move and set-up, and had a high maintenance cost and low productivity. The capital outlay and extensive technical development required to improve these drills and reduce the high drilling costs however, was economically unattractive. The thermodynamzc properties oJ liquid Cd-Sb alloys were investigated using the cell arrangement measurments were obtained every 2°C at a heating and cooling rate of 12°C per hr and at equilibrium every 2O0C frorn 500°C down through the stable liquidus. The S-shaped asCd US composition curve was used in the cotnposition regzon near Cd,Sb, to calculate a tempeerture-dependent inleraction coefficient from quasichemical theory. Rapid changes in a scd were observed at a transition temperature varying from 400" to 465°C depending on con/kosition. It could not be determined if the changes in aScd were discontinuous, but tlze composition dependeke of the magnitude of the change is indicative of a second-order phase transformation in the liquid. The values of the experimental changes in ASCd are in agreement with calculations from the slope of the transition temperature, using the concept that a second-ovdev phase transition occurs in liquid Cd-Sb alloys. II is suggested that the transformalion is associated with the formation of Cd4Sb3 molecules in the liquid. ThE structure of liquid alloys is the subject of many investigations. X-ray, resistivity, and thermody-namic data have been interpreted as indicating varying degrees of short-range order in the liquid in alloy systems forming inter metallic compounds. In general, the melting process is not a transition from an ordered to a completely disordered state, but some degree of order is retained in the liquid. Maximum ordering in the liquid state occurs close to the melting temperature of the compound and the arrangement of atoms becomes more random at higher temperatures. Of special interest in this respect is the Cd-Sb system. It is one of the few metallic systems which form both stable and metastable compounds when liquid alloys are cooled at normal rates. The stable system exhibits an intermetallic compound, CdSb, melting at 459"c.l A second compound, CdrSbs, has also been reported,' melting close to this temperature. The metastable system has one compound, CdsSbz, melting at 420"c.I Resistivity measurements on liquid Cd-Sb alloys close to the liquidus temperatures have been interpreted in terms of a complex ordering behavior which changes rapidly with increasing temperature.3 The resistivity-composition curve is characterized by two maxima corresponding in composition to CdSb and CdsSbz. The resistivity-temperature plots show sharp breaks for alloys in the composition range of 45 to 70 at. pct Cd on cooling through a transition temperature close to the stable liquidus. Fisher and phillips4 investigated the influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of liquid CdSb alloys. The viscosity of some alloys increases sharply on supercooling below the stable liquidus. A maximum in the viscosity-composition curve occurs at the composition CdSb. The thermodynamic properties of liquid Cd-Sb alloys have been investigated by Seltz and ~e~itt' and Elliott and chipmane by the electromotive-force method and their results are in good agreement. However, these investigations were carried out at temperatures well above the liquidus temperatures of the alloys, and the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force, dE/dT, were obtained from experimental points for each alloy at a few temperatures considerably above the liquidus temperature. Scheil and ~aach' investigated the thermodynamic properties of this system by the dew point method in the temperature range from about 100°C above the stable liquidus down into the supercooled liquid region. They reported several anomalies, i.e., the activity of a melt on heating differed from that on cooling, and the activity increased sharply in the limited temperature interval immediately above the liquidus temperature of the stable alloy, followed by a sudden decrease below the liquidus. Values obtained on heating and cooling were not in agreement. A reinvesti-gation of a few alloys by Scheil and Kalkuhl' by the electromotive-force method failed to confirm these observations. The authors concluded that the anomalies were due to inhomogeneities in the starting alloys and they discarded their previous results. The present investigation was undertaken in order to obtain thermodynamic data close to the liquidus temperature and in the supercooled region where the anomalies were originally reported, employing the electro motive-force method. This method is quite precise and will most easily permit observations of small changes in activity and partial molar entropy with temperature. Measurements were taken every few degrees so that the dE/dT values could be calculated over the entire temperature range and small changes in the thermodynamic properties close to the liquidus temperature could be observed. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were prepared from 99.999+ pct Cd and Sb (Cominco). Surface oxide was removed by scraping and then melting the metals under vacuum and filtering through Pyrex wool. THe elements silver, cadmium, tin, antimony and tellurium either are found as impurities in commercial coppers or are intentionally added to produce coppers for special uses. When present in small quantities, each of these metals exerts a significant effect on the properties of copper, but despite considerable experience and investigation much remains to be learned about their specific behavior. The presence of extraneous elements, particularly oxygen, complicates the study of individual additions of impurities in the range o to 0.05 per cent, and the use of high-purity copper has been found extremely helpful in circumventing these difficulties. It has also been found that individual behavior can be satisfactorilv determined from measurements of two commercially important properties, conductivity and softening temperature, according to methods that have been described previously.1,2 Data of this type, obtained in the course of a general investigation of the effects of impurities on the properties of both oxygen-bearing 2nd oxygen-free copper are presented herewith. All samples except those containing cadmium were prepared as 3/8-in. continuously cast oxygen-free rod from pure copper and weighed amounts of a similarly synthesized master alloy. Composition was checked by chemical methods, which in every case verified the calculated analyses. Test wires were cold-drawn one B, and S. number per pass on a string-up machine using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in. and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Some oxygen-bearing samples were produced directly from the 3/8-in. oxygen-free rods by diffusion from a surface scale at 850°C. and drawn to size as listed above, but most of the alloys were remelted in pure graphite and cast through air into a I-in. round mold. The slugs were then hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed as listed above, and drawn to 0.081 inch. Conductivity wires were annealed for I hr. at 100°C. intervals between 300' and 800°F., using a hydrogen atmosphere for oxygen-free samples and purified nitrogen for the oxygen-bearing type. All samples were quenched from the annealing temperature in 10 per cent H²S04 and conductivity was measured on a Hoopes bridge that had been checked against a Kelvin bridge. The softening temperatures represent the half-hard stage of the annealing curve as determined by a standard procedure.' In the special number of the magazine Ocl und Kohle (Oct. 22, 1940) dedicated to the petroleum industry of southeastern Europe, there appeared several articles relating to Yugos1avia.t In the first article the author calls attention to the fact that there are two fields in Yugoslavia that have been explored and exploited by more than 100 wells at variable depths during the last 50 years. These are on the Island of Mura, at the confluence of the Mura and the Drave. Additional exploration drilling in various other parts of the country has been without result, but certain ones of these explorations have revealed the existence of gas horizons that have some value, which are being used for industrial purposes. The deepest well drilling in Yugoslavia has reached 2000 in. In the Valley of Morave, in the region of Selnica, I00 km. south of Nish, there have been discovered asphalt-bearing limestones, which contain about 15 per cent asphalt and are associated with bituminous clays. Later, at Paclenica, important deposits of natural gas were found. A zone rich in gas and oil seepages runs through Pracec, Miklenska, Bujavica, etc. The author studied these regions from the point of view of stratigraphy and tectonics. The anticlines and gas-bearing domes are concentrated in two zones: the region of the Drave (Island of Mura) and the region of the Save, southeast of zagreb, which contains the gas field in exploitation in the region of Bujavica. A full description of the productive region of the Island of Mura has been given by Egon Bohm, a geologist, in the second article mentioned. This includes a history of the exploration and exploitation that took place under Hungarian rule in this region. The most important exploration was effected between 1884 and 1885 by Stavenov and Stinger, of Vienna. In 1927 work was done in the same region by Anton Raky, a well-known explorer who makes work of this kind his specialty.

Recently this matter has been brought very much to the front by the loss of a large Illinois mine due to failure of a bulkhead that separated it from several old, flooded mines. As this great misfortune has provoked much inquiry about proper bulkhead design, it is felt that a description of the successful and extensive water-sealing practice at three mines that have different natural conditions will be of considerable interest to those connected with properties having a present or future water problem and to engineers that may have to design safe bulkheads of economical construction. These three mines are the Saxton and Dresser, near Terre Haute, Ind., and the Hegeler, near Danville, Ill. All three have water conditions that make it necessary to regularly seal off all worked-out sections of the mine, and there are considerably over a hundred bulkheads in each. AS far as the writers know, these three mines are the only ones in the bituminous coal fields of the United States with anything like so large a number of water seals and experience, although a number of other mines are known to have a few bulkheads. More detail will be included herein on the Saxton mine than on the others, as the writers are more familiar with it. General Mining System All three of the mines use the same general panel room-and-pillar system, which consists of rooms turned both ways off room entries and a solid block of coal left on all sides of the completed panel except on the cross-entry side, where a heavier pillar is pierced by two entries for haulage and air. Owing to water conditions, no pillars are pulled; recovery inside the panel barrier pillars is approximately 65 per cent.

THIS discussion is based on statistical manipulation and evaluation of operating data from several commercial blast furnaces which include rather wide variations in practice. We are concerned here mainly with the effect of manganese on sulphur elimination under operating conditions in commercial blast furnaces, but this effect can be outlined more clearly by including certain other variables such as silicon in iron and slag basicity, which are all in part interrelated. Real progress in understanding all of the smelting-zone reactions in this process requires more laboratory studies of slag-metal melts similar to those in the blast furnace, with careful control of oxygen pressure. Such experimental work is very difficult, however, and in the meantime, with the present scarcity of more fundamental data, such statistical trends and correlations as can be obtained from commercial furnace operating records may help in choosing laboratory test conditions as well as adding to our knowledge of operating procedures. We do not know just why the furnace data are apparently so irregular that statistical treatment of large numbers is needed to obtain accurate trends. It is partly caused, no doubt, by the many simultaneous variables present, but there are perhaps also such factors as: (I) the con- tinual swings up and down so characteristic of the process; (2) difficulty of accurate sampling of co-existing phases, as well as (3) the presence of both equilibrium and rate factors as a result of the fast driving of the process. In desulphurization, for example, the flow of thin layers of slag and metal over solid coke surfaces, plus the contact between droplets of iron falling through the slag layer in the hearth, would lead one to expect a close approach to equilibrium. On the other hand, most of the critical part of sulphur removal may occur in a short time and distance below the tuyeres with perhaps an accompanying decrease in oxygen pressure and the concurrent reduction of much of the silicon and manganese, so its degree of approach to equilibrium may be quite variable. Probable Chemistry of Desulphurization Since there is little evidence that sulphur atoms in the iron solution are aasociated to any appreciable extent in molecules such as MnS, the transfer from slag to metal and back again can be written:* (FeS) ? [FeS], [I] hence the following reactions seem most probable in the slag phase, (FeS) + (CaO) ? (CaS) + (FeO), [2] and, (FeS) + (MnO) ? (MnS) + (FeO). 131
