The preparation of low-grade iron-ores by concentration, whether or not followed by an agglomeration of the concentrate, has in the United States only recently been recognized as a metallurgical process of vast economical importance for its iron indust.ry. This importance of the process lies not only in the fact that it makes possible the use of ores heretofore discarded on account of their low iron-content or their too high percentage of elements deleterious in the iron industry, but also in its produetion of a raw material for the blast-furnace that is more uniform in its physical character and chemically purer, with a higher iron-content, than the general run of natural ores. When mixed in the burden of the furnace, it lowers the amount of coke and fluxing-stone required per ton of pig-iron produced. The furnace-operations become more regular and more easily controlled. The pig-iron is of higher quality and more uniform in character. In brief, it is becoming recognized that the beneficiating of the natural iron-ore, even if it makes the furnace-ore higher in cost per unit of iron entering into the burden, may mean a lowering of the production-cost of the pig-iron and an improved product. At the present time, the Lake Superior district furnishes about 80 per cent. of all the iron-ore yearly produced in the United States. If the Southern States arc exempted the percentage runs as high as 93 per cent. These ores are showing a steady decrease in grade from year to year. The principle of airborne electromagnetic prospecting is well-known. The basic geophysical texts in most cases discuss the main elements involved in electromagnetic prospecting. However, there is certainly little information available to the public concerning the present types of airborne electromagnetic systems being flown today by both contracting companies and some of the mining companies which have their own instruments. This is unfortunate since it is difficult for those people not conducting such operations to understand thoroughly the large variation in the electromagnetic instruments available.

IN presenting this brief historical perspective, it is not my purpose to address myself to the geophysicists, to most of whom the story is already well known. My objective is to draw the attention of those who hold the belief that geophysics is something new, typically twentieth century, to the fact that fundamentally, whether it was known by the name of geo-physics or not, the science is an ancient and an honorable one. It began many centuries ago, and our modern civilization and its commerce owe a great debt to its founders, who today are likely to he overlooked and their names forgotten. The word "geophysics" means the physics of the earth, and is descriptive of a science that in many ways bears the same relationship to geology that astrophysics does to astronomy. When dealing with dis-tant stars or deeply buried rocks, the experimenter cannot reach them to obtain samples, which can be taken to his laboratory for study. He therefore exhibits the resourcefulness of Mahomet in the mountain episode, and makes the terrestrial globe or the cosmic universe his labora-tory, studying the effects of distant bodies on certain "fields of force"" which come to him across interstellar space, or through the rocks that make our earth. The application of these techniques of the physics laboratory to the study of the stars is the science of astrophysics, and to the investigation of the earth is geophysics. Yet the origin of the most valuable contribution to the world's trade and commerce ever made by geophysics remains lost in deep obscurity. Unknown even is the country wherein lived the unsung genius who invented the first geophysical instrument, the mariner's compass! Worse yet, it is not certain whether this invaluable guide of man had its begin-nings in Europe or in Asia. A Chinese legend tells of the Emperor Hwang-ti, who attacked his enemy Tchi-yeou on the plains of Tchou-lou in the year 2634 B.C., whereupon the latter magically raised such a fog that the Emperor could not pursue the retreating troops. In recent years considerable publicity has been given to the problem of atmospheric pollution by fuel-burning equipment. Legislation has been stimulated and smoke ordinances have been enacted, the provisions of which show a definite trend toward stricter control of the emissions not only from the stacks of industrial fuel users but also from the chimneys of domestic consumers. As a result of war conditions, some slackening in the enforcement of these ordinances may be noted, but this is only a temporary expediency caused by the changes necessary in the distribution of the nation's fuel supplies and difficulties in securing the necessary equipment. Previous trends may be expected to continue in the postwar period. Largely because of the consumer demand for automatic heat, but partly because of the legislation against smoke emission, there has been a marked increase in the use of domestic underfeed stokers with the past decade. When correctly adjusted and operated, these units reduce the smoke emission materially, so that even the high-volatile bituminous coals may be burned with little or no emission of objectionable smoke. Unfortunately, however, the use of the domestic underfeed stoker introduces another problem; namely, fly-ash. Production of Fly-ash The term "fly-ash" is a misnomer, since the fly material is generally a mixture of small carbonaceous particles varying from green coal to coke, and inorganic particles ranging from fluffy ash to small particles of fused clinker. For want of a more comprehensive name, however, the term fly-ash is used throughout this paper to include all the fly material. Even with hand-fired furnaces a certain amount of fly-ash is produced, which necessitates periodic cleaning of the boiler flues or furnace radiator, the smoke pipe, and occasionally the chimney itself. With stoker operations the amount of fly-ash is increased many fold, because of the higher velocity of air travel through the fuel bed. Frequently the amount of this fly-ash attains such proportions as to constitute a definite nuisance to the householder and his neighbors and distracts very materially from the otherwise automatic or semi-automatic performance of the stoker. Measurements of the electromotive force of the cell at 995°C have shown that the cell may be used to detennine the zinc content of molten Cu-Zn alloys to the nearest 0.05 wt pct. The cell is used for brass melts to which no ZnO is added intentionally, because essentially all oxygen in the Cu-Zn-O system is present in the form of ZnO. The cell is also used to detev,nine the thernodynamic activity of zinc for Cu-Zn al1oys of the brass composition range, from which the equilibrium partial pressure of zinc for such alloy may also be calculated. The electrochemical measurement of the concentration of the most active metal in other engneering- alloy systems by a similar technique is also considered. IN recent years there have been many studies concerning the direct electrochemical measurement of oxygen content in molten engineering metals.' These investigations employ galvanic cells in which the electrolytes are various solid mixed-oxides which conduct current by movement of oxide ion vacancies under the influence of an oxygen potential gradient. Similar cells have also been used to measure the thermodynamic properties of mixing of solid alloys,' one component of which has a much greater affinity for oxygen than the other component(s). One alloy system of obvious engineering importance comprised of two metals of greatly differing affinity for oxygen is copper-zinc. At the casting temperature of molten brasses, the zinc concentration is very difficult to control not only because its vapor pressure is very high, but also because of its high affinity for oxygen to form ZnO. Inasmuch as brass castings may be required to have a zinc concentration within very narrow limits, it would be advantageous for the brass industry to have a means for quickly measuring the zinc content in the molten alloy just prior to pouring. A calculation based on earlier thermodynamic studies of oxygen and zinc in dilute solution in binary Cu-O and CU-Z' alloys indicates that the oxygen concentration of molten 70 wt pct Cu-30 wt pct Zn brass must be much less than 1 ppm for the separate phase ZnO not to exist in the ternary Cu-Zn-O system. Thus it can be assumed that all molten brasses, both in the laboratory and in the foundry, are sufficiently saturated with oxygen for the separate phase ZnO to be present. In view of the foregoing reasons, the cell investigated at 995°C for the purpose of measuring the zinc concentration in molten copper-zinc alloys, particularly those of brass compositions. In this cell the left hand electrode is a reference electrode comprised of a mixture of the pure powders of nickel and nickel oxide, to which a platinum contact is made. The electrode of interest is a molten Cu-Zn alloy of unknown zinc concentration with a tantalum wire contact. The electrolyte is the commercially available (Zircoa) calcia stabilized zirconia. The ZnO in the Cu-Zn electrode compartment is not intentionally added, but is naturally present as a result of the infinitesimal amount of oxygen required for its formation in this alloy system. In cell [A] nickel oxide is reduced at the cathode where O= represents the electrolyte. At the anode dissolved zinc of the Cu-Zn alloy is oxidized to form ZnO(s) in its standard state Thus the overall reaction is for which the molar free energy change is where 5 is the Faraday equivalent (23,063 cal per v equivalent), is the electromotive force of the cell in volts after correction for the Pt-Ta thermocouple, FOf (ZO) and AFF (NO) are the standard molar free energies of formation of the respective oxides, and a2n is the thermodynamic activity of zinc in the molten Cu-Zn alloy. The reference state of zinc in this case is taken to be the pure liquid. At constant temperature all the terms of Eq. [I] are constant except and azn Thus since all other participants in the electrochemical reaction are in their standard states, the change in the electromotive force of Cell [A] is represented only by a change of the thermodynamic activity of zinc at constant temperature. The zinc concentration is related to the activity by sampling the alloy for chemical analysis after cell measurements are taken. EXPERIMENTAL A typical cell construction is shown in Fig. 1. This and other experimental details were similar to that described earlier with the exception of some minor modifications which are detailed below.

IN many schemes of classification and description the term contact-deposit has been somewhat loosely applied to all accumulations of useful minerals (other than those of unquestioned sedimentary origin) which are enclosed between two different rocks. As thus used, the term may include deposits of widely differing origin, and, unless qualified, is not in place in a genetic classification. The present paper deals with a special class of contact-deposits. In many geological provinces, granular igneous rocks, such as granite, diorite and syenite, have broken through and invaded sedimentary rocks. The molten magma may in part have reached the surface and there solidified with relative rapidity as a lava. The largest masses of it, however, did not reach the surface, but cooled very slowly at considerable depth under great pressure, and eventually consolidated into a rock of granitic texture. Uplifts and extensive erosion may have followed; and at the present day, in many places, thousands of feet of material have been removed, bringing to the surface the intrusive granular rocks and their once deep-seated contacts with the sedimentaries which they shattered at the time of in-

Two techniques have been developed with which the applicability of pressure build-up analyses can be extended to include pressure data which previously have been considered virtually unusable. One of the interpretation methods makes possible the analysis of pressure build-up performance during the wellbore fill-up or after production period which occurs soon after a well is closed in. The other technique is an extension of a method for analyzing pressure build-up performance during the late-time portion of the pressure build-up which occurs after boundary eflects first begin to alter the shape of a conventional pressure build-up curve. With both of these methods it is possible to obtain estitnates of the kh product, the skin factor and the reservoir pressure. In addition, with the late-time analysis technique it is possible to obtain an estimate of the contributory drainage volume of the well being tested. This means that in some cases a check on reservoir limit test and (or) material-balance calculations can now be obtained from pressure build-ups. Both methods are slightly more time-consuming than conventional pressure build-up analysis methods because trial-and-error plots of pressure data must be made. The late-time method for analysis of pressure build-ups is in principle applicable to the late-time portion of a two-rate flow test or a pressure drawdown test. The interpretation formulas and procedures for these types of tests are also outlined. In these cases, as with pressure build-ups, it is significant that an estimate of the contributory pore volume is also obtained. On the basis of limited experience with the new techniques, it appears that satisfactory estimates of the kh product, skin factor, reservoir pressure and, for late-time analysis, contributory drainage volume can be obtained. INTRODUCTION The analysis of bottom-hole pressure build-up behavior in closed-in wells has been a a subject of interest in petroleum engineering circles for many years. In fact, few other subjects have received as much attention as pressure buildup analysis methods have. The cause for this interest is essentially twofold in nature. First, the pressure behavior of a well can normally be measured with a reasonably high degree of accuracy so that good data for analysis can be obtained. Secondly, over a fairly wide range of operating conditions, valuable information as to the quality of the reservoir rock and completion efficiency of the well can be obtained at a nominal cost. In recent years, numerous papers have been prepared on the effects of various operating conditions and reservoir heterogeneities on pressure buildup behavior. Very little work has been done, however, on extension of pressure build-up analysis methods to those pressure data which are not amenable to analysis by the present methods. The theory upon which the analysis of shut-in bottom-hole pressure build-up data is based is derived from the solution of the radial flow equation for a slightly compressible fluid for constant-rate conditions. It requires that the well be closed in for a sufficient period of time to obtain a clearly defined linear portion on the plot of observed bottom-hole pressure vs log (t + ?t)/ ?t (where At is shut-in time, and t is producing time to the instant of shut-in). From the slope of the plot and other normally obtainable data, the formation permeability, the well damage or skin factor, and the reservoir pressure at infinite shut-in time (if the reservoir were infinite) can be estimated. The successful application of this procedure depends on being able to recognize the straight-line section on the basic pressure build-up plot. The presently used pressure build-up interpretation theory also assumes that a well is closed in at the sand face and that no production into the well occurs after shut-in. In practice, of course, the well is closed in at the surface, and inflow into the well continues until the well fills sufficiently to transmit the effect of closing-in to the formation. This adjustment period is commonly referred to as the "afterproduction" or "fill-up" portion of the pressure build-up. During the period that the well fill-up effect is most pronounced, the basic pressure build-up plot is nonlinear. At later shut-in times after the effects of a drainage boundary have been felt at the well, deviation from the straight-line behavior of the pressure build-up plot also results. In many cases either of these effects or a combination of both can make the straight-line portion on the pressure build-up plot difficult to recognize. Obviously, an extension of pressure build-up analysis methods to include the afterproduction period and the period in which boundary effects are being felt would be desirable and might render valuable pressure data which for years have been considered virtually unusable. The principal reference of note concerning pressure buildup analysis during the afterproduction period is a paper by Gladfelter, Tracy and Wilsey.1 In the approach of these authors it is necessary to measure the rate of influx into the well during the afterproduction period. This is done through sonic measurements or through measurement of tubing-head and casing-head pressures simultaneously with

The laboratory test work compares various 6 x 16 mesh activated coconut carbons using a gold standard solution of 4 ppm dissolved in sodium cyanide. The carbon adsorption rate and maximum loading are measured for different feed solution ionic contaminates: silver, copper, thiocyanate, and ferrocyanide. Conclusions are drawn that among the activated coconut carbons tested, maximum loading and the effects of specific ions varied significantly. The work presented can be applied to 6 x 16 mesh carbon selection tests and specific ion monitoring for industrial carbon adsorption systems.

Ingots of four steels (1045, 1080, Ni-Mo-V, and Ni-Cr-Mo-V) were cast at pressures varying from about 1 to 760 mm of mercury, so as to obtain a range of hydrogen contents in each steel. The susceptibility of these steels to flaking was evaluated by cooling hot-rolled blooms at a range of cooling rates, varying from water quenching to slag cooling, and studying the occurrence of flaking as a function of cooling rate. The steels exhibited differences in susceptibility to flaking, and a tlzreshold value for hydrogen content for each steel was found, below which the susceptibility was very low and above which the susceptibility increased markedly with increasing hydrogen content. Mechanical property evaluations, metallogvaplzic exantinations, and X-my diffraction determinations o,t retained austenite were made on samples from the blooms. A mechanism of flaking which is consistent with the observed behaviors, the effects of hvdrogen content, and the differences in susceptibility among the steels investigated is postulated, based on the results of mechanical property evaluations and metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies. ThE important role of hydrogen as a factor in the occurrence of "flakes" or "hair-line cracks" in steel has now been established by many investigations. These have included investigations by steel producers and forging manufacturers, to whom the prevention of flaking is a very real and serious problem, and many research studies aimed primarily at establishing the mechanism of this behavior Several investigators3 have reported that steels cast at reduced pressures (absolute pressures of about 1 mm) not only are low in hydrogen content but are essentially insensitive to the formation of flakes. These investigations have shown that a general relationship exists between hydrogen content and susceptibility to flaking. The difficulty of obtaining suitable samples of steels of a given composition with the desired range of hydrogen contents, particularly in the relatively large sections in which flaking most commonly occurs, has been the principal obstacle to quantitative evaluations of these relationships. Steels with intermediate hydrogen contents between 1 ppm, and the 4ppm or higher of air-cast steels are generally not available in commercially produced steels. Laboratory procedures, in which the hydrogen is introduced into solid steel samples by heating in a hydrogen atmosphere under pressure, generally involve a limitation in the size of the sample which can be treated, and thus are not representative of the behaviors in large sections. The availability of a facility at the South Chicago Works of U.S. Steel, in which several ingots could be cast from a single heat of steel at total air pressures ranging from 0.25 to 760 mm of Hg, has made it possible to overcome this obstacle and to obtain ingots of a given steel covering the intermediate range of hydrogen contents desired. These ingots, furthermore, are of a size suitable for the production of product with section sizes large enough to be representative of the products in which flaking most commonly occurs in commercial production. In these experiments, this facility was used to study the relationships between hydrogen content and the susceptibility to flaking of four steels, two plain carbon steels at 0.45 and 0.80 pct C and two low-carbon alloy steels representing a medium and a rather high hardenability level. These flaking studies were supplemented by evaluations of mechanical properties and by metallographic studies on samples from the blooms, in order to obtain pertinent information on the factors other than hydrogen content which influence the susceptibilities of these steels to flaking. Based on the results of these tests, a mechanism for the initiation and propagation of the flaking cracks, which is consistent with the observed behaviors, is postulated. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK Steelmaking and Conversion. To provide material for the investigation, five 29- by 35-in., hot-topped, big-end-up ingots were cast from each of four 80-ton, basic electric-furnace heats of four different steels (a 1045 steel, a 1080 steel, a Ni-Mo-V steel, and a Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel). INTRODUCTION EVER since a genetic connection between many ore deposits and magmas began to be widely recognized, some two-score years ago, there has been much discussion of the complex and intricate problem of the genetic association of specific kinds of mineralization with specific kinds of igneous rocks. General discussions of the latter problem and pertinent data have been given by S. F. Emmons, Kemp, Lindgren, Niggli, Rastall, Spurr, Vogt, and others. In this paper no attempt is made to deal with mineral deposits genetically associated with volcanic rocks, but only with those presumed to be related to exposed intrusive masses. The writer is indebted to E. S. Bastin, F. F. When in charge of the Glen don Iron Works, the importance of good methods of filling was forcibly brought to my attention, and it occurred to me that the first step toward the discovery of the best plans was the accumulation of exact information as to the distribution actually effected by various chargers; also, that something could be done in this direction by careful measurements in the furnace, to be afterwards recorded for comparison on drawings. The figures shown herewith have been prepared from such measurements, and nearly all of them refer to Glendon, where the fuel used was anthracite and the ore-mixture about threequarters of New Jersey magnetic ores and one-quarter of brown-ores from the vicinity of the works. Every occasion furnished by the blowing-in of furnaces was utilized, but the data accumulated rather slowly in this way; and, opportunity oEering to make special trials at no great expense, the figures from 2 to 7 were thus obtained. The trials were made by dumping a hopperful (6 barrows) of material at once into the furnace, and, when all the fuel of a round (12 barrows) had been put in, the profile of the upper surface was obtained by stretching a steel tape across the top on a diameter and at a known height. By measuring down from this with a graduated rod, the profile was easily obtained with sufficient accuracy, especial pains being taken to get correctly the crests of the ridges and the bottoms of the hollows, as many intermediate points being included as seemed necessary. This was repeated on another diameter when there was occasion. The same course was followed for the limestone and ore.

The separation of fine sizes of coal from its impurities by means of various flotation methods has become of increasing importance in the coal industry. This, no doubt, will be even more so in the future as the quantity of high grade coal is depleted, particularly that used for metallurgical purposes. The purpose of this paper is to describe and report the results of research work done under the auspices of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. to determine the amenability of their bituminous fine sizes of coal to flotation, to investigate the value of various reagents and factors affecting their use, and compare the results between froth flotation and bulk oil flotation. Compared with the preferential flotation of complex minerals, or ores, the flotation of coal is comparatively easy. However, this statement should not lull one into the feeling that there are no special problems involved. For instance, the separation of coal from pyrite in high sulphur coals is still far from being 100 pet successful. Size consist has considerable effect on reagent consumption and recovery. Other factors will be described and finally it must be remembered that in the flotation of coal a low priced material is being treated and thus economic considerations govern more closely its application than is generally the case in treating other minerals. As a result of the research work done by the Pittsburgh Coal Co. on the flotation of coal, it was concluded that it was practical to clean the —48-mesh coal commercially by froth flotation and after several different types of flotation units and circuits were investigated by means of pilot plants, large scale units were installed at their Champion Nos. 1, 4 and 5 Preparation Plants for the cleaning of —48-mesh slurries. These large scale operations have been recently described by D. H. Davis.' C. P. Proctor and C. B. Carlson2 in their chapter on Froth Flotation of Coal in the AIME Seeley W. Mudd series book on Coal Preparation describe some of the practical applications of our Pittsburgh Coal Co. laboratory work in actual plant practice as well as summarizing part of the investiga-tional work. The author presents this paper, however, as a supplement to their reports, and records the basic research accomplished in the laboratory investiga-tional work as well as the results of experiments using bulk oil flotation. In presenting this work the author wishes to state much more work must be done in applying the principles of flotation to cleaning coal, especially in view of recent studies and practices in other mineral beneficiation fields. Methods of Conducting Laboratory Tests The bulk of the research work was conducted in the laboratory of the Champion No. I Preparation Plant. ACCORDING to petrographic investigations, 1-4 cooled steel furnace slags contain a number of substances that have been shown to be ferro-magnetic5,6 and hence capable of undergoing appreciable changes of susceptibility with temperature. Since any alteration of the suscepti-bility of a constituent affects the average susceptibility of the sample, information concerning the nature of the substance should be deducible from its magnetic behavior. The possibility of obtaining information concerning slags in this way led to the construction of the apparatus to be described. FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF APPARATUS The most convenient method of observing changes in mass suscepti-bility? with temperature is the one employed by Curie7 in his original investigation of the changes in magnetic properties of substances at elevated temperatures. As the method has been described frequently in the literature and in textbooks, only a brief review of the fundamental principles need be given here, but the particular arrangements used in the present work require a more detailed description.

RESULTS of a general survey of corrosion-fatigue phenomena at the Naval Engineering Experiment Station were presented in five previous papers.1-5 In these papers references were given to the work of Haigh in 1917.6 The five papers mentioned gave a general survey of the behavior of metals when tested to failure under simultaneous corrosion and cyclic stress. As a result of this survey the fourth paper gave a tentative analysis of the corrosion-fatigue process. According to this analysis, if the initial stress is below the endurance limit but above the corrosion-fatigue limit, the corrosion-fatigue process is divided into two periods. The first period is the formation of pits. As the initial stress is below the endurance limit, the pitting is assumed to be due to corrosion, not to fatigue. The corrosion pitting, however, is not the ordinary pitting of stressless corrosion, but is an accelerated pitting due to the effect of the cyclic stress on the corrosion. As the pit progresses, both the actual stress and the effective solution pressure increase. The increase of actual stress is due to increasing stress concentration at the bottoms of the pits. The increase of effective solution pressure is due to the increase of actual stress. The mutual intensification of stress and solution pressure continues until the actual stress at the bottoms of the pits surpasses the endurance limit. The second period of corrosion-fatigue then begins. In this period the process is merely fatigue accelerated by the corrosion. The cracks advance at a continually accelerated rate until the specimen breaks.

The Zistersdorf field, near Vienna, continues to be Austria's only producing area. During the year the field was slightly extended by Rohol Gewinnungs A.G. in its Rag 2, which in April came in for an initial 120 tons daily through an 8-mm. (0.315-in.) bean, from the twelfth Sarmat sand at 1447 m. (4747 ft.). The amount of fluid produced by this well has remained essentially constant, but after the first several months water appeared and increased to some 50 per cent of the total. TWO subsequent extension wells, Rag 3 and Rag 5, northeast and west of Rag 2, found only water-bearing sands, and drilled through the main fault and into the Flysch at 1683 and 1401 m. (5522 and 4596 ft.), respectively. At the close of the year preparations were under way to deviate both wells away from the fault to test still deeper sands. Within the previously proven area of the field Erdolproduction's Gosting VII came in flowing a maximum of 440 tons daily, the highest individual production yet recorded. This company's Gosting VIII also yielded an initial production of 20 tons daily, and its Gosting XI, drilling

The mechanics of the continuous sintering process are briefly reviewed and the application of this process for the beneficiation of principal minerals used in making cement is shown. Pilot plant tests using pyrobeneficiation techniques were conducted with mixtures of limestone and shale in various ratios. Results are illustrated and show the percentage removal of carbon, carbonates, sulfur, alkalies, and volatiles as a function of the limestone-shale ratio. Tests with varying quantities of solid fwls, added to mixtures containing limestone and shale in a 4 to 1 ratio, were made to attain optimum elimination of the volatile constituents. Experimental results show that 90 pct of these constituents were removed during the calcination sintem'ng process. The advantages of using the beneficiated material for making cement are discussed with regard to prepam'ng, handling, and clinkering operations. A sintering process for treating raw materials or kiln waste products which contain high amounts of alkaline materials is described. Tests were performed with a high alkaline waste dust mixed in a 1 to 1 ratio with raw cement meal. The data from these tests and others using different halides for aiding alkali removal are evaluated by the alkali content of the cement clinker. Test results showed that the Dwight-Lloyd process could be applied with facility in beneficiating raw materials for cement making. Substantial quantities of deleterious volutile constituents were removed by calcining and sintering techniques. The continuous sintering process has been applied for a number of years as a means of beneficiating minerals for subsequent conversion to merchantable products. The process was developed and first used for nonferrous metallurgical applicatfons. However, it has risen to prominence for ferrous metallurgical applications where last year in the U.S. and Canada nearly 40 million tons of iron ore were treated by grate firing processes. Through the years of process development many investigators have realized the versatility of the sintering process and have directed experiments toward the use of it for applications with nonmetallic minerals. These have included calcining limestone, carbonizing coal, expanding shale, and burning cement raw meal. Today commercial sintering plants produce cement clinker from mixtures of limestone and shale, lightweight aggregate from shale or clay, and calcined products from phosphate shale. The mechanics of the downdraft sintering process have been presented by many authors. In general practice the materials to be agglomated are mixed as moistened fines with a solid fuel and this mixture is spread uniformly on the grates of the sintering machine. The charge is then momentarily directed under an ignition furnace. After ignition a continuous downdraft of air promotes combustion of the fuel and through heat transfer particles become partially fused into a coherent mass. This is cooled from continued draft induced after combustion. Many investigators have shown that distinct zones are formed during the process of sintering iron ores. At the midway point of the sintering process these are prominent and are, respectively, from the top of the bed to the bottom, comprised of a cooling zone of sintered material, a combustion zone of sinter formation, a calcination zone, a drying zone, and a zone of unreacted materials. Completion of sintering occurs near the discharge end of the machine where the firing zone approaches either the grates or grate dressing material called hearth layer. Here the peak draft temperature usually can be noted in the windboxes. The zonal pattern has been illustrated with the use of graphs which show thermal gradients as they progress through the bed of materials during sintering. Fig. 1 shows, in simplified form, thermal gradients existing when clinkering cement on a sintering machine. The thermal gradients illustrated are for periods of initiation, midway and completion of the clinkering process. The Durham Iron Works of Messrs. Cooper & Hewitt, near Riegelsville, Pa., occupy a site which has been almost continuously the scene of iron-manufacturing industry since 1727. Doubtless if Anthony Morris and his thirteen associates, who in that year erected a blast-furnace on the Durham Creek, a short distance above where the Durham Iron Works now stands, could have had a vision of the improved and enlarged apparatus of their successors, they would have been not less astonished by the huge stack, the hot-blast ovens, and the blowing-engines of the modern blast-furnace, than by the railroad which now follows the bank of the river on which their clumsy " Durham boats " once floated pig-iron to Philadelphia. In one particular, posterity must confess their snperiority. We are told that in November, 1728, they shipped three tons of Durham iron to England. The proprietors of the Durham Iron Works are not now shipping iron to England. The present Durham furnace was built (in place of two smaller ones) in 1874 and 1875, and made its first blast in 1876. A description of it, with other works of the same proprietors, at Trenton, N. J., by A. L. Holley and Lenox Smith, was published in London Engineering for January 31st, and February 21st, 1879. Since that time, a number of improvements, dictated by experience, have been made in the details of the furnace and fittings; and the recent roilclusion of a long and successful blast presents a convenient opportunity for a description of the works and a statement of the results of practice. The accompanying drawings will show the general arrangement of the works. The furnace, Plate I., Figs. 1 and 2, is 75 feet high by 19 feet bosh. The hearth is 11 feet 4 inches in diameter, with seven tuyeres 5 feet 6 inches above hearth-line.
