In the process of wire rod production, the rolled wire products must be cooled from the red-hot state to the normal temperature state. How to cool the wire rod after rolling is one of the key links of product quality control in the whole wire rod production process. In this paper, combined with the closed-loop transformation project of controlled cooling temperature of Xuanhuan iron and steel group co., LTD., the closed-loop related controlled cooling equipment (including water cooler, valve table, etc.), nozzle layout and process layout of water tank, and closed-loop software control system of controlled cooling temperature of high-line are analyzed and designed. Closed-loop system design USES temperature of cooling water cooling and water cooling two temperature closed loop regulating circuit, through temperature feedback and feedforward to achieve the uniformity of temperature adjustment, in order to prevent occur due to temperature closed loop control function with the phenomenon of a steel before and after the temperature difference is bigger, system Settings have "absolute temperature regulation" and "relative temperature regulation" selection mode. The system has a self-learning mode, which can modify the temperature feed forward formula. In addition, this paper takes the hard wire 82B rod as the test object, and studies the process parameters and the comprehensive mechanical properties of the rod before and after the water cooling system reform. The research results show that the temperature closed loop system, can ensure the rolled piece temperature control precision of plus or minus 10℃, enhances the stability of wire rod cleaner performance. It can reduce water consumption by about 186m3/h and improve the utilization rate of cooling water.

As the hot rolling of steel moves into new more compact and effective processes, and as steel producers look for new ways to reduce their costs and increase their margins in ever tightening markets and tolerances, the evolution in Steckel mill technology, layouts, and new innovations may well keep the Steckel mill as a viable option, especially in areas of the world where minimized capital investments are required. In this paper we examine the evolution of the Steckel mills over the last two decades, with emphasis on new innovations and practical results, and provide a summary of hands on experience with some of these innovations. Also a focus on the South American Installations is given (from Siderperu to Gerdau’s newest Combination- Plate-Steckel-Mill). In addition, we aim to show the viability of the Steckel mill as an option for many existing or prospective steel producers, as the quality of the products rolled with Steckel mills reaches new quality parameters and as new innovations permit the rolling of thinner and wider materials, reaching new applications and wider share in markets, while maintaining a strong foothold in the traditional uses of Steckel mill products such as stainless steel, structural, and line pipe materials. As the ability to handle heavier, thicker, and wider coiled plate products increases, the coiled plate Steckel mills option is as strong an option as ever.

In this article, a 444-type heat-resistant ferritic stainless steel containing 0.05wt% Ce and 2wt% (Mo+W) was used as an experimental material and a study was carried out on the effect of rolling processes on the microstructures and texture evolution as well as on the mechanical properties and formability. The rolling processes contain hot rolling at different hot rolling finish temperatures, annealing after hot rolling, cold rolling and subsequent annealing. As for the hot rolling process, two hot rolling finish temperatures, 860 C and 770 C, were adopted, and their influence on the microstructures and mechanical properties was comparatively studied. The results showed that the microstructures after hot rolling and subsequent annealing could be refined by lowering the hot rolling finish temperature. The resultant microstructures after cold rolling and annealing were hereditarily refined. Lowering the hot rolling finish temperature can weaken the -fiber texture in hot rolled or cold rolled ferritic stainless steel strip. However, the -fiber texture was homogeneously strengthened by annealing the cold rolled ferritic stainless steel strip. Enhanced mechanical property and formability in terms of strength and average plastic strain ratio could be obtained by lowering the hot rolling finish temperature of ferritic stainless steel.

Intensive process and technology improvements related to the BOF converter — the key process to increase steel plant productivity and stability — have been performed at Ternium Brazil. This paper details the road map for process developments and investments in equipment technology, as well as the results achieved. The main topics of this development are the process control and optimization systems, slag forming model, oxygen blowing pattern, end-of-blow point control and slag carryover control. The outcomes of this development are improvements in the reblow rate, end-of-blow oxidation, direct tapping, slag carryover, slopping ratio, metallic yield and lining life.

Since 2016 Gerdau Ouro Branco has been producing steel plates of various qualities and grades. However, it was not until 2018 that the first plates produced by accelerated cooling process were made available for external testing, in this case for large diameter UOE pipes manufacturing. Recent line pipe and OCTG specifications are showing that the oil and gas market still consumes regular API grades, such as X60, X65 and X70, however with increasing wall thicknesses, reaching values up to 1.5 inches. These specifications also demand longitudinal and transverse tensile guarantees and drop weight tear tests in temperatures as low as -40°C. Projects with these types of mechanical properties present process requirements as challenging as those necessary for higher API grades in lower thicknesses. This paper shows the steel design concepts and rolling routes for achieving the necessary properties for X70 steel plates in 28.15 mm. The microstructural features were also investigated and associated with the production process and the tensile and toughness results. Finally, challenges such as tensile anisotropy and DWTT abnormal fracture are presented.

During the make-up and break-out of the connections, threaded joints are exposed to intense mechanical and tribological solicitations. The connection performance is influenced by its geometry, material properties, surface treatments and thread compound. The aim of this work is to evaluate and characterize the tribological behavior of different thread compounds applied on manganese phosphated carbon steel under low speed and high pressure sliding contact. Four thread compounds were evaluated: one containing lead, zinc and graphite; other lead-free, containing copper and finally, the last two lead-free and containing non-metallic solids. The tribological behavior was analyzed by a block-on-ring tribotest. During the test, load varied linearly between 250 N and 7000 N; loading and unloading lasted 14 sec and were performed in opposite directions of rotation to simulate the make-up and break-out operations. Friction force and load as a function of time were registered. Upon completion of the test, wear surfaces were analyzed by SEM, optical microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The obtained results show that the lead and zinc containing thread compound displayed the best behavior, showing a wear reduction of approximately 20%. These results are in line with previously known oilfield experience. Average COF values around 0.15 were measured and no significant differences between dopes were observed; indicating that the wear behavior was influenced by the additive package.

PT. Krakatau-POSCO coke making plant, located in Cilegon, Indonesia, is the results of the know-how and experience of Paul Wurth (PW) in coke making field. The plant has a capacity of 1,321,000 t/y of gross coke achieved by two coke oven batteries with 42 top charging Paul Wurth “Jumbo” ovens each. PW “Jumbo” oven with a useful volume of 78,92 m3 allows decreasing drastically the number of pushing/charging operation per day with a consequent reduction of the diffuse emissions. Gas treatment plant with a capacity of 88000 Nm3/h has been designed in collaboration with DMT GmbH & Co. KG, adopting the latest technologies with specific design know-how. PT. POSCO-Krakatau plant has been successfully commissioned and started-up in October 2013. The present paper will highlight the main technology features applied in PT. Krakatau-POSCO project for both coke oven and gas treatment plants.

Poço de visita (PV) é uma estrutura de redes coletoras de esgoto onde há a interligação dos fluxos de esgoto. Atualmente a maioria dos PVs em utilização é feito de anéis pré-moldados de concreto; concreto armado; e alvenaria (com blocos de concreto ou tijolos cerâmicos). Devido ao material de sua composição é facilmente sujeito a degradação, ao sofrer desgaste acabam liberando areia, acarretando vários problemas no equipamento de tratamento e no próprio tratamento do esgoto, além dos transtornos públicos ocasionado pela sua falha. Visando solucionar esses problemas, melhorar a qualidade e condições de tratamento de esgoto, busca-se implementar poços de visita produzidos de polietileno, material polimérico com características apreciáveis para essa finalidade, por exemplo seu caráter inerte, peso, resistência e vida útil. Como a estrutura é um protótipo, a influência de defeitos em sua integridade estrutural ainda não se encontra estabelecida. Neste trabalho investiga-se a concentração de tensões em sua estrutura e a influência de defeitos na concentração de tensões, através do método não destrutivo de emissão acústica e simulação computacional.

Conveyor system wear of belts and transfers attribute to a significant proportion of the maintenance costs and lost productive hours when handling hard abrasive ores at high unit rates typical of the iron ore industry. The recent growth phase has seen a rapid increase in mine and export capacity, with many new and upgraded plants operating at high throughput and utilisation. Subsequently, the industry has progressed to an optimisation phase, seeking to maximise production capacity and reduce maintenance costs with minimal capital spend. To support this, a programme of modifying designs was executed to improve conveyor transfer chute and belt life, which identified a need to challenge the industry practice for specification of designs to improve the functionality of the installed equipment. While acknowledging the importance of selecting the highest wear resistant materials for the intended application, this paper investigates design criteria related to decreasing conveyor transfer and belt wear. Of focus is a shift in the manner in which designs are specified, from specifications primarily governing geometrical constraints, to those meeting technical and functional requirements aimed at producing optimum geometry for a given set of material handling parameters. An assessment of transfer design criteria is presented.

In this work it was design an actuator concept using bias-type device technique, which comprises two coils that mutually push against each other to supply the stroke. For the coils springs, it was used a wire of NiTi shape memory alloys (SMA) and a wire of 400 grade maraging steel as construction materials.

The use of friction dampers are wide proposed for a variety of mechanical systems for which it is not possible to apply viscoelastic materials, fluid based dampers or others viscous dampers. An important example is the application of friction dampers in aircraft engines to reduce the blades vibration amplitudes. In most cases, friction dampers have been studied in a passive way, however, a significant improvement can be achieved by controlling the normal force in the contact region. The aim of this paper is to study four control strategies for friction dampers based on three different hysteresis cycles. The first control strategy maximizes the energy removal in each harmonic oscillation cycle, by calculating the optimum normal force based on the last displacement peak. The second control strategy combines the first one with the maximum energy removal strategy used in the smart spring devices. Finally, is presented the strategy which homogenously modulates the friction force. Numerical studies were performed with these four strategies defining the performance metrics. The best control strategy was applied experimentally. The experimental test rig was fully identified and its parameters were used for numerical simulations. The obtained results have shown the good performance for the friction damper and selected strategy, also, the agreement between numerical and experimental results.

Rising energy demand and steadily decreasing quality of raw materials due to the global resource depletion are great challenges to the steel production today. The FINEX® Process has been developed jointly by POSCO, Korea and PRIMETALS Technologies Austria, to provide the iron making sector with the capability to lower hot metal production costs, environmental pollutions and to increase the flexibility in terms of operation and the choice of raw materials. FINEX® is a new technology combining a gas-based reduction in a series of fluidized bed reactors and a reduction smelting in a melter gasifier. Commenced in April 2007, the first 1.5Mtpa commercial plant has demonstrated the competiveness as an alternative iron making route. Another 2.0 Mtpa, third generation FINEX® (3G) plant was recently installed at POSCO, Pohang Works and has been operating satisfactorily since its blow-in in January 2014. Based on the well-proven plant concept, new process features, the highly competitive production costs and environmental advantages, the FINEX® Process can be considered as a competitive alternative to the conventional blast furnace iron making route.

We are at the beginning of an era of profound transformation and human progress — a new industrial revolution. This “Automation of Everything” era will be brought about by digital interfaces, data analysis and control of the physical world through networks employing the Nokia Bell Labs Future X1 architecture — networks to support the digitization and connection of everything and everyone with the goal of automating much of life. The interconnection of robots, machines, drones, sensors, processing platforms and people through Future X networks will provide transformative tools for the automation and optimization of factories and warehouses, ports, electric grids, transportation networks, food, healthcare, construction, logistics and supply chain, emergency response, mining, and other physical industries. To date, the level of automation has been modest at best. Automating these physical industries — industries that account for 70 percent of the US Gross Domestic Product, for example — has the potential to drive significant increases in the world’s economic productivity.2 Realizing the potential of this next industrial revolution will require billions of wirelessly connected endpoints for high fidelity physical-to-digital conversion, millisecond response times to tightly control and coordinate machines and robots, and intelligent analysis to optimize real-time decisions — tasks beyond the reach of current networks. Increased levels of automation are already being achieved through the use of 4G advanced wireless access technologies. The untethering of sensors and actuators in industrial environments through the low-latency, high-bandwidth, high-reliability, and massive scale provided by 5G wireless access will complete this evolution, providing an unprecedented ability to digitize, analyze, comprehend and manipulate the physical world at a scale never previously thought possible. These new capabilities will enable us to create digital models of the physical world with ever higher levels of fidelity, further enhancing our ability to improve operational efficiencies and increase productivity and worker safety. Doing this will require a dramatic evolution in network architecture toward massively distributed cloud control and baseband capacity to achieve the required ultra-low latency and ultra-high bandwidth for industrial and infrastructure automation services — the Future X architecture. In early 2019, Nokia Bell Labs will publish a sequel to “The Future X Network: A Bell Labs Perspective”. “Future X for Industries: A Nokia Bell Labs Perspective” will explore how the Future X architecture will automate many of the world’s physical industries, including chapters devoted to electric power, cities, rail, mining, public safety, manufacturing, ports, logistics and supply chain, and an overarching chapter devoted to securing this highly automated world. In February 2016, the upgraded Blast Furnace 1 of JSW Steel Limited (JSW) at its Vijayanagar Steel Plant was blown in after a 6 months shutdown in which the whole furnace was rebuilt on the existing foundation and within the existing tower structure. Despite several plant constraints it was possible to increase the furnace inner volume by 85% - reaching 2307 m3 from existing 1250m3. The upgradation project covered the stockhouse and its dedusting system, top charging system, furnace profile, furnace cooling system, casthouse and its dedusting system, slag granulation plant, pulverized coal injection plant, hot blast system and gas cleaning plant – with major interventions in order to cope up with the changed operating conditions. The total scope of the project was split by JSW into several packages, all based on design data provided by Paul Wurth. JSW was responsible for coordinating the local subcontractors along with Paul Wurth which has been appointed as main technology supplier in charge of complete basic and selected detail engineering in the key areas and of the supply of core equipment such as the Bell-less Top®, copper staves, GCP key items and TMT casthouse machines. The main design concept and the key points of the project such as optimization of project ROI, advanced erection concepts as well as a summary of the operating results are presented confirming JSW “BF1” upgradation as one latest examples of the current state of the art in the revamping projects.

SMS group has developed a new micro-mill-concept, the core of which is the belt caster. This was first built on an industrial scale and has been put into operation and developed together with Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. The robustness in industrial-scale operation could be verified. The full use of the belt casting technology, mainly related to energy efficiency and CO2 reduction, is realized with the micro-mill-concept. This is an in-line-process, casting and rolling in one line.

Recently steel manufacturers have significantly focused their attention on safety and working conditions thanks to new labour laws, comprehensive operators’ knowledge and increased company social responsibility. Even with a reduced budget, investments on safety are now widely approved. Mill constructors aim at developing upgraded solutions to comply with these new requirements. In some cases mill constructors can even anticipate customers’ requests and consequently put into the market innovative solutions. In this text we will analyze some advanced solutions developed by Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche Spa - the leading company in long-product rolling mills - aimed at improving working conditions on wire-rod block settings. In particular, we will focus on rolling guides installed on fast-finishing blocks and on servo-assisted device for rolling rings changing. In fact, this equipment has shown effective benefits on our test plants and has mainly cut out the tendency of the personnel to be absent due to backache. This paper will first present standard working conditions, will then introduce the newest equipment developed by Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche Spa, will analyze its operation and finally will describe in detail the benefits that can be reached with its use.

Reliable high end automation and process optimization systems are main factors for excellent product quality, safe operation and maximized plant performance in the steel industry and its designated environmental plants. Primetals Technologies introduces new automation packages for consequent safe and cost efficient production. Many areas within the steelplant interested to be monitored and measured automatically are not implemented in the automation system due to limited access or technical reasons. A wireless, self-organizing network facilitates wide ranging data transmission in previously inaccessible areas and opens up a wide range of new opportunities. With Fluid Guard a system to detect leakages with highest accuracy and reacts properly for all kind of water cooled circuits is available, improving the safety in steelmaking process. Lance Guard can be utilized for all fully automatic and semi-automatic lance appliances, but is especially suitable for the products of Primetals Sublance Standard/2.0 and LiquiRob applications, since these systems make seamless integration particularly simple. Manual lance appliances may also be tested and diagnosed. Environmental plants have become a main part in steelmaking plants. Highest performance in combination with optimized energy consumption is the main target in Primetals Technologies’ innovations in automation optimization packages for dedusting systems. A new approach for preventive maintenance and operator assistance is introduced with the Acoustic Expert System.
