"The agglomerating index of coal is an index based upon the nature of the coke residue left when the standard volatile-matter determination of the well-known proximate analysis is made. In this determination a small amount of coal is heated in a container to about 950° C. (1,742° F.), at which temperature the volatile matter is driven off, leaving a coke formation. The coke residues for various coals are quite different in physical structure: and, for some time past, work has been done on studies of the nature of these residues in connection with the coking of coal. In 1934 Gilmore, Connell, and Nicolls proposed use of the agglomerating index for indicating the dividing line between noncaking coals and those having weakly caking properties. 4/ Its use was adopted in the standard classification of coals by rank as a requisite physical property index to differentiate semianthracite from low-volatile bituminous coal and also high-volatile ""C"" bituminous from subbituminous ""A"" coal, as shown in table 1, the standard coal classification adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association. 5./In studying the agglomerating properties of coals based on the coke residue the Bureau of Mines has adopted the notation given in table 2. Coals that in the volatile-matter determination give a coke residue either in the form of an agglomerate button that will support a 500-gram weight without pulverizing or a button that shows swelling or cell structure are considered to be agglomerating."

"This paper describes a method of deciding on various design parameters for a sublevel caving layout. Layout design curves are obtained from the output of a computer optimization program. The program uses mathematical relationships derived from the theory of gravity flow of material to optimize the large number of interdependent design variables which are involved.IntroductionIn the design of an efficient sublevel caving mining system, a large number of interrelated variables need to be considered. Although many papers discuss individual variables, very little exists in the literature to show how these variables interact to achieve optimum results. This can lead to trial and error in sublevel caving design, which can prove costly, particularly because sublevel caving is a mining method which requires integration with sublevels above and below. With no pillars being left, experimental stopes cannot be isolated for study. Unfortunately, the complexity of layout design and the costs associated with trial and error have caused many planning engineers to choose more tried and tested mining methods.Sublevel caving works best to extract low-value ore surrounded by incompetent rock. All phases of the mining method can be highly mechanized, allowing low operating costs and high production rates. Good safety records are achieved, as workers are always in 'good' ground and the method is regular, making it comparable to an industrial process."

This report is the result of information obtained from a review of related literature, personal inquiry and on-site examination of active surface coal mining operations. Four improved surface coal mine systems are described in detail and evaluated for feasibility, implementation requirements, environmental benefit and costs. Engineering feasibility emphasizes equipment availability, compliance to design requirements, practicality and industry rating. Implementation potential emphasizes immediacy, ease, acceptability and constraints. Special attention was given to environmental responsiveness, both with regard to the solutions to mined-land reclamation problems and to the concurrency of reclamation. Each system description includes a hypothetical model mine with a depreciation schedule, capital summary, estimated annual production costs, sales price computation, production and operating cost summary, and a sensitivity analysis of mine price to stripping ratio. A program plan and time schedule for demonstrating a selected mining system covers site selection criteria, mine data collection, criteria for controlling and budgeting costs and reporting findings. Ten additional mining methods and techniques are briefly described and evaluated. Common reclamation problems are listed and described. Sixteen state reclamation laws and regulations are abstracted. Sixty-nine references are listed in the bibliography.

This paper presents part of the outcomes of the drill and blast optimization project carried out at Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Kisladag Gold Mine is the largest gold mine in Turkey with a low-grade, bulk-tonnage, open pit operation that uses heap leaching for gold recovery. After blasting, the ore is fed to a three-stage crushing circuit which prepares crushed ore approximately -10 mm (0.39 in) for heap leaching. Crusher downtime analysis showed that blocky material and insufficient feed are causing significant downtimes with the primary crusher. This was supported by the fragmentation data collected to date. It was decided to initiate a fragmentation project to understand the variation in the run-of-mine (ROM) size with a view to provide a consistent feed to the crushing circuit. The study includes the analyses of the ore strength and structure, image analysis of the fragmentation pictures acquired from blasts, blast auditing and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) analyses. During this project, over 200 fragmentation pictures were acquired from 47 blasts to optimize ore and waste blasts. Ore strength varies between 30 and 120 MPa and rock quality designation (RQD) ranges between 30 and 100. A site-specific fragmentation model was used to calibrate the fragmentation for blast domains formed. In addition, alternative cases were simulated to achieve blasts designs with consistent ROM fragmentation size distribution. Alternative blast designs that include stemming length and powder factor changes were suggested. Long stemming length, drill cuttings use, free faced blasts, small shot sizes and poor stemming length control were some of the key issues causing coarse fragmentation.

"Construction of the new extension to Terminal 4 at John F Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York involved the application of tapered piles for foundation support. Initial design based on past load testing experience had indicated that a pile depth of 65 feet was necessary to achieve a capacity of 394 tons. However, piles with a single length of 62 feet were ordered and installed, which led to marginal performance of the piles. This paper presents the technical considerations for mitigating the situation based on a systematic review of three preliminary pile load tests and dynamic capacity measurements on the shorter piles. Consideration was given to the long term gain in capacity of tapered piles due to set up in the Glacial Sand. The observational approach to the evaluation of piling performance adopted on this project resulted in salvaging many piles which failed to comply with the specified driving criteria. It was acknowledged that a more prudent course of action was for the Contractor to have ordered more appropriate pile lengths that allowed for potential variation in soil conditions across the site. The 4.6% saving in pile material did not warrant the effort that was required to mitigate the 39% of installed piles that did not meet the specified driving criterion.INTRODUCTIONAn expansion project at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York involved the Phase 2 extension of Concourse B at Terminal 4. The site consists of 4 to 5 feet of pavement over about 10 feet of hydraulically placed sandy fill. Below this is a layer of marsh deposit, comprising of soft organic clay and peat, up to about 11 feet thick. Beneath the marsh deposits is a deep layer of glacial sand which extends to well over 100 feet below ground. Figure 1 shows the typical subsurface profile at the site. The new structures were supported on 223 steel tapered piles. The piles consisted of a straight steel pipe 18 inches in diameter and 0.375 inches thick, with a 25 feet long tapered bottom section (diameter varying from 18 inches down to 8 inches at the pile toe). The piles were first driven to the founding depth and subsequently in-filled with concrete. The concrete strength (fc) specified was 4,500 psi and the yield strength of the steel piles (fy) was 50 ksi. Initial pile design, based on earlier experience with static pile load testing for Phase 1 development at the same terminal, indicated that a pile length of 65 feet was necessary. However, piles with a single length of 62 feet were ordered and installed by the Contractor, leading to marginal performance of the piles. This paper presents the technical considerations for the adoption of alternative pile driving criteria, based on a systematic review of the preliminary static load test results for the present site and PDA measurements obtained during pile installation, in order to accommodate the capacity of the shorter piles."

There has been a substantial increase in the use of rubber-tired front-end loaders in the mining industry in recent years. Concurrent with this increased usage, in the period of 1966 to 1970, there were at least 74 mining industry fatalities involving front-end loaders, or (on the average) in excess of one fatality per month. When the usage of front-end loaders by the construction industry and other industries, organizations, and agencies, such as the Government (i.e., Department of Defense), along with the uncounted numbers of serious, but non-fatal accidents, are included in the picture, the safety record for front-end loaders, of necessity, becomes a serious subject for study. There is an urgent need for attempts to be made to eliminate or reduce the number of safety hazards; to decrease the confusing diversity of controls designs found on present front-end loaders; to improve the maintenance and operating procedures; to formulate better personnel policies; to increase management and official awareness of the extent of the problem, in both industry and the Government; etc.; in order to decrease the number of accidents. Part of the problem may be traced to the fact that the operator of a front-end loader is frequently designated a "heavy equipment operator." This implies that he is automatically qualified to operate any model, of any manufacturer's, wheeled or tracked, front-end loader as well as many other types and classes of heavy equipment. Contrary to automotive practice, the complement of primary operating and emergency controls varies widely from model to model, as well as from manufacturer to manufacturer. Not only are certain controls present on one front-end loader model and absent on others, but there are significant differences in the modes of control operation, in the functions performed by superficially similar controls, in the location of the various controls, etc.

The brewing industry byproduct, spent grain (SG), was evaluated for its ability to adsorb Ag(I) from aqueous solutions. Ag(I) adsorption was dependent on solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial Ag(I) concentration and temperature. The kinetic data were well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that chemical adsorption was the rate-controlling step. The equilibrium data followed Freundlich isotherm rather than Langmuir isotherm, suggesting heterogenity of the adsorption sites on spent grain. Ag(I) desorbed from Ag(I)-loaded spent grain was also evaluated in this study. HCl, NaOH, Na2S2O3 and ultrapure water were chosen as eluants and desorbed Ag(I)-loaded spent grain for 30min, Ag(I)-loaded spent grain desorbed in 0.1M Na2S2O3 exhibited higher elution efficiency as compared with other eluants. The results indicated that application of spent grain for adsorption and recovery of silver from aqueous solutions was feasible.

"Thermodynamic investigations on fcc solid ternary Fe-Ni-Cr alloys have been performed by means of the computer-aided Knudsen cell mass spectrometry. Ternary T.AP.-series (Thermodynamically adapted power series) are used for the algebraic representation of the thermodynamic excess properties. At 1650 K the molar excess Gibbs energy GE is negative over the whole field of stable fcc phase. The molar heat of mixing HE is exothermic in the predominant part of the fcc phase field. Only between the section with a constant ratio of mole fraction Xcr/XNi = 0.64 and the fcc phase field boundary the HE values are slightly endothermic. The results of this work can be used successfully for phase diagram calculations.IntroductionThermodynamic investigations on multicomponent alloy systems such as the Fe-Ni-Cr ternary system including the three binary boundary systems are very time-wasting and usually beset with considerable experimental difficulties. Additionally, the required experimental equipment is very expansive and the obtained results are not always satistying. Therefore it is understandable that many phase diagram calculations are based only on few experimental values of the molar excess free Gibbs energy GE. Consequently, Kundrat and Elliott [1] as well as Hillert and Qiu [2] used in their reassessments of the phase diagram of the Fe-Ni-Cr system thermodynamic data mainly assumed and/or optimized by means of various reasoning.Lee [3] reported recently, a revision of the used thermodynamic description of the Fe-Ni liquid phase is necessary to obtain a better agreement with the experimental data on the bcc/liquid or fcc/liquid tie lines and liquidus temperatures in the Fe-rich region of the Fe-Ni-Cr ternary system than in the previous assessments. This is 'in full agreement with mass spectrometric investigations of Fe-Ni alloys in the liquid and in the fcc solid phase, published earlier [4,5]. Indeed, phase diagram calculations based upon the molar excess free Gibbs energies GE obtained in these studies yield liquidus and solidus lines in excellent agreement with experimental phase diagram data [5]. Nevertheless, these experimental data have not been considered later on any more, not even in the revision by Lee [3]."

The epithermal deposit is hosted by Tertiary volcanic rocks that lie between mid-Miocene normal faults of the Northern Nevada Rift. Petrographic, laser-ablation and metallurgical observations suggested that the gold occurs in two principal forms: native (and electrum) and disseminated in arsenopyrite. It was proposed that gold is distributed between two parageneses with distinct mineralogical associations. Detailed downhole geochemical study supported the observations. Concentrations of Au, Ag, As, Sb and Se were determined from drill core and reverse-circulation cutting composites and contoured on cross-sections. Gold was indeed shown to have a bimodal distribution with the two parts separated spatially and perhaps temporally, implying that two separate genetic processes acted to concentrate gold at Mule Canyon

"The fly-ash problem of the smoke-abatement engineer - who now might well be titled, ""Smoke and Fly-Ash Abatement Engineer"" - starts with the necessity for him to know what fly ash really is, what plants really create it, and how much is being created. Fly ash in this connection may be defined as all solid particles emitted to the atmosphere as a result of the combustion of fuel.COMPOSITION OF FLY ASHMuch can be learned about fly ash by studying samples with a strong magnifying glass or, preferably, a high-power microscope. As an example, figure 1 is a photomicrograph of an underfeed-stoker fly ash weighing 23.7 pounds per cubic foot, which passed a baffle-type cinder catcher and was caught by a Cottrell precipitator. Figure 2 shows a similar fly ash made at a higher stoker rating and weighing 36.2 pounds per cubic foot. The lighter ash contains more light, unconsolidated ash than the heavier. In both instances some of the ash has been fused to a glass, as is indicated by the spherical particles resembling marbles; however, the heavier dust contains more and larger spheres. With the faster burning and higher air pressures occurring at the higher burning rates, more of the larger fused spheres reached the precipitator.Such studies of fly ash frequently make possible correct determination of its source. For example, the Supreme Court Building, one of the finest of the Federal buildings in Washington, was having considerable difficulty with fly ash from some outside plant. It was thought to come from a nearby apartment house. A fly-ash trap was installed there, and care was taken in the operation of their underfeed stokers. The fly-ash nuisance continued. Microscopic examination of the fly ash found about the building compared with samples taken from the stack of the apartment house showed to the surprise of the accusing building superintendent that the present source was elsewhere. By the same means, the source was found to be a plant about ore-half mile away."

"Due to the way drilled deep foundations are being constructed, their structural integrity and geotechnical capacity are highly variable. Drop weight systems are increasingly being used to dynamically test the capacity and integrity of drilled deep foundations. Conventional pile driving hammers are often either inadequate or not economical to test these foundations and drop weight systems have therefore been developed to allow for dynamic testing.The advantages of the tests include high mobility, short testing time, low cost relative to static load tests (allowing multiple tests at a single site), and integrity/construction quality evaluation concurrent with capacity determination. The dynamic testing method for drilled deep foundations encounter several difficulties including: the need for a pre-testing analysis for matching pile, soil and testing system, adequate mass and drop height to reflect the mobilized capacity without structural damage, test interpretations for irregularly shaped and/or non-uniform piles, need for reliable dynamic measurements depending on the impact and the distance between the impact and the measuring point, and limited knowledge about the accuracy of the predictions.The principles of the tests are presented using simplified models and demonstrated via a case history. Drop weight systems are reviewed. Dynamic measurement principles are explained and the construction and testing quality effects are outlined and demonstrated via numerical modeling and case histories. A comparison of dynamic and static tests is presented via a database, case histories and finally a short review of relevant codes is provided.1 IntroductionTraditional static axial load test is performed by a slow application of a force produced against independent reaction, imitating structural loading. It is the most reliable method to determine the pile’s performance as commonly required under typical service conditions. The major limitations of this testing are: (i) high cost associated with set-up, test duration, interpretation and construction delays, and (ii) inability to obtain information about the pile-soil interaction along the pile without additional testing means (e.g. tell tales, strain gauges, etc.). These limitations are acute when high capacity foundations are involved."

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been utilised in the oil and gas industry for over 60 years. The technology was recently identified as having potential value in iron ore, where latent bound moisture may affect ore handling even after dewatering and extraction. The first step in introducing this technology to iron ore involved laboratory tests on drill core samples. These results established the parameters for a downhole borehole magnetic resonance (BMR) tool for iron-rich environments, which was subsequently developed. A major challenge involved shrinking what is a very large tool in the oil industry to a slimhole, lightweight, 1-man deployable mining tool.Of primary concern was the ability to measure the very fast transverse relaxation times (T2s) seen in the lab results on iron ore samples. Iron creates local field gradients that significantly decrease the T2 times. As a result, the BMR tool had to be able to measure T2s in the range of hundreds of microseconds, a level not required in clastic sedimentary formations. The choice of T2 cut-offs in iron ore is critical to successfully separating the free and bound fluids. The industry has typically focused on T2 cut-offs in clastics and carbonates, but not in systems with high iron content. Using core analysis results (poro-perm and NMR) we were able to verify the BMR response. The T2 cut-offs were determined from NMR core analysis and then applied to the logs so as to provide a continuous, calibrated permeability log.Field results that highlight the challenge involved in logging in iron-rich environments are presented, as well as some minimum requirements for a successful BMR log. Examples from boreholes in an active iron ore mine in the Pilbara iron ore province in Western Australia are presented, as well as explanations for how NMR data can be combined with bulk density logs to provide a continuous dry weight density log based on the original density-porosity equation from Alger et al (1963).CITATION:Hopper, T A J, Trofimczyk, K K and Birt, B J, 2017. The SO2-ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor generated by leaching of manganese nodules, after removal of minor quantities of iron and manganese, contained copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper from the leach liquor with LIX 84I, stripping of ammonia from the Cu-barren raffinate was carried out followed by precipitation of metal ions from the ammonia-stripped solution as sulfides. Leaching of the sulfide precipitate was carried out with H2SO4 to obtain a leach liquor containing 0.58 kg/m3 Cu, 2.67 kg/m3 Zn, 2.00 kg/m3 Co, 24.68 kg/m3 Ni and 10.0 kg/m3 (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper and zinc from the sulfate leach liquor with LIX 84I and D2EHPA, respectively, the solution was left with Co and Ni. Extraction of cobalt from the Cu- and Zn-free solution was carried out with 0.1 M PC88A and stripping of the cobalt-loaded organic was carried out with the cobalt-spent electrolyte (pH 1.4). Extraction of nickel from the cobalt-free solution was carried out with 90% neutral 1M NaPC88A followed by stripping of the nickel-loaded organic with 120 kg/m3 H2SO4 solution. Extraction of metal ions increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The maximum separation factors, with respect to the pH and extractant concentration variation studies, were 3796.7 and 15350.0, respectively. The extracted species for the metal ions were CoA2?3HA and NiA2?5HA.

This paper is based upon a review of studies of mostly Canadian mining companies in Chile, northern Canada, Tanzania, Guatemala, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In spite of often well-meaning efforts most mining firms produce wealth in developing areas that largely benefit those immediately involved, sometimes neighboring communities, and often those in the governing strata. Typically mining takes place in enclaves and fosters enclave development, rather than the kind of inclusive wealth development favored by the recently UN published Inclusive Wealth Report. One way by which mining operations can foster more inclusive wealth development is to adopt much broader approaches towards the construction of the various physical and social infrastructures ? roads, water, electricity, health services, schools, security ? required for their own operations by collaborating with diverse regional, provincial, and/or national agencies and businesses to develop these infrastructures for larger populations and areas beyond the immediate sites where they are operating. Established mining firms can also foster more inclusive wealth development by establishing more formal, collaborative relationships with artisanal miners.

The following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. 'The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which mag stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. 'The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. Inasmuch as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a com-pressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Although these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. "INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. Dak., were mapped and sampled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The work covered by this report was undertaken at the request of Dr. J. A. Holmes, late Director of the Bureau of Mines, to whom the writer had been recommended by C. W. Goodale and E. P. Mathewson, of Butte and Anaconda, Mont. The director's offer was accepted for the honor it conferred and for the useful results that might be promulgated by the work in the technical field covered. The investigation was facilitated by permission to visit various works and sometimes by contributions of important definite information on a given subject. In this report considerable space has been devoted to general and theoretical principles on the ground that under modern conditions the best results in any field of activity can be attained only with the a. id of an adequate knowledge of the best theories underlying the practice. The diffusion of such knowledge in the field of sampling metallic metallurgical materials appears to have been quite insufficient, and it is felt that when the principles involved are once thoroughly comprehended their universal application will be appreciated, so that it will make no difference whether pig iron or gold bullion is offered for test. It may further be noted that a discussion of the theories underlying practical methods is placed under the caption "Practical Sampling," with the idea that no one can be a practical sampler unless he is capable of analyzing his methods. No attempt has been made to advocate any one method, but it is hoped that the analyses of all of the methods in use will show where each may be correctly and safely applied. The fact that it is possible to demonstrate the theoretical correctness of several methods indicates the invalidity of the claim that any single one of them is the standard.
