"The recovery of gold from ores is often accompanied by the release of other species in the leach solution. This state of affairs leads to depleted free cyanide levels in the slurry. Therefore, separation and quantification of these cyanicides and free cyanide at different stages of the cyanidation process as well as in waste solutions is crucial to provide mitigation tools by preventing leaching of deleterious metals for environmental considerations.COREM and the research group of Prof. Larachi have been working together on the control of gold passivation and cyanicides during cyanidation for several years. Previously, a first capillary electrophoresis (CE) protocol for the speciation of sulfur and cyanicides (SCN-, Cu, Fe) during cyanidation of gold complex sulfide ores was developed and validated for assessing industrial process water.The separation of zinc cyanide complexes used to be confronted with a number of difficulties due to the weak and/or undetectable cyanocomplexes in formally available CE protocols. Moreover, according to our knowledge, no direct CE protocol exists to separate free cyanide. Therefore, a new study aimed at developing a second CE protocol for the detection and quantification of cyanide complexes of zinc and nickel as well as of free cyanide in the cyanidation process water.To achieve this goal, six common carrier electrolytes such as pyridine, trimellitic acid, 4-methylbenzylamine, sodium chromate, phthalic acid and tris base were studied, using an indirect UV detection method. The best results were obtained using sodium chromate for which all ions were successfully separated and quantified. In addition, the effect of electric field strength, injection volume, electro-osmotic flow (EOF) modifier and background electrolyte (BGE) concentration were examined, while peak height, peak area and noise were considered for optimization.As a result, the new protocol is expected to complete the initial CE protocol by detecting cyanide complexes of zinc and nickel as well as free cyanide. Moreover, analytical determination of free cyanide in the presence of weak cyanide complexes achieved by the new protocol was also compared to conventional titration using silver nitrate solution. This new CE protocol will contribute to applied research and help plants to better understand and eventually control the behaviour of cyanidation circuits."

Aços multiconstituídos têm aplicações voltadas principalmente para o setor automobilístico. Isso porque esses apresentam uma boa combinação de elevada resistência, ductilidade e tenacidade. A elevada resistência desses aços é devida a martensita e aos finos feixes de ferrita bainítica, enquanto que a tenacidade e a ductilidade são atribuídas aos filmes finos de austenita retida presentes entre os feixes. Esses filmes contém uma maior concentração de carbono em relação aos blocos de austenita retida. Uma consequência é que estes se tornam mais estáveis mecanicamente e termicamente. Dessa forma, foi realizada a avaliação do desempenho mecânico de um aço tratado isotermicamente abaixo de Mi e revenidos a 400°C/1 h. Os resultados dos ensaios de impacto mostraram que quanto maior a fração volumétrica da austenita retida maior é a energia absorvida, independente da morfologia desse constituinte.

"INTRODUCTION Much of the recent progress in increasing the efficiency of oil-well performance can be attributed to advancements in the art of cleaning wells. Through research and development by operators and service companies during the past decade, significant improvements in the application of engineering and chemical principles to well-cleaning technology have widened greatly the scope of ""clean-out"" methods to the end that greater ultimate recovery of oil will be attained.This report reviews recent improvements and developments on this important problem in California; it describes also the use of various methods and tools for cleaning wells to stimulate or revive their productivity. Developments in preventing and removing mud sheaths in well-completion operations also are described. The report is based on a field survey, supplemented by data from the technical and patent literature and from manufacturers' catalogs, which contain much valuable information.In preparing the material for publication as a Bureau of Mines report, the author has been fully aware of certain limiting conditions that attend the discussion of a subject such as that treated in this report. The following are examples:1. To a considerable extent, well cleaning in California is done with tools rented from service companies, and their representatives and employees are specialists in jobs of this type. They usually have working experience with their own equipment and methods which greatly exceeds that of persons whose interest has been casual or who have had no opportunity to study the subject in detail in actual practice. Many of the tools and methods are covered by letters patent for the protection that may be in developing and successfully applying these mechanical and chemical means of increasing the production of wells. Frequently several years have been required to perfect a given tool or technique, requiring relatively large investments to establish a service that is remunerative to those who have primary interest in a certain development and at the same time attractive enough to the operators of producing properties (because of greater quantities of oil delivered into the flow tanks) to warrant employment of or contractual agreements with a particular service group."

Experience has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorina-tion-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave: Fe,O,, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO,, 0.75; ZuCO,, 4; A1,0,, 3.20; H,O, 0.7 ; SiO, and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size—a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

Offgrade chromite concentrate, with a Cr-Fe ratio of 1.3 to 1.4 has been successfully smelted to produce useful ferroalloys. The Cr-Fe ratio is not improved, but the alloys can be used without a too drastic change in normal steel-mill practice. The ordinary high-carbon ferrochrome has been successfully produced by smelting under highly acid smelting conditions. An alloy containing 50 percent chromium was produced at a power consumption of 4,490 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. Alloys containing 20 percent silicon were made by direct smelting chromite concentrate and silica.

An ignition detection and suppression system was developed under the scope of this contract. The objective of this machine mounted system was to detect flames caused by frictional sparking from the cutting bits of a continuous mining machine and to suppress it with sufficient speed to prevent the development of an explosion, and to keep the flame from harming the machine operator.

"As conventional, base or precious metal ores are being depleted worldwide, the mining industry is being faced with an increasing exploitation of arsenical sulfidic ores. Enargite is a common example. The downstream processing of these ores poses several problems ranging from high smelter penalties to finding economical and environmentally acceptable means of disposing of the arsenic. Several hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed for extracting arsenic from enargite concentrates, notably using alkaline sulphide leaching (ASL). However, few alternatives exist for removing the arsenic from solution and stabilizing it in an approach that is both economical and environmentally acceptable.Dundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a technology for the sequestration of arsenic by vitrification. Originally optimized to cost-effectively stabilize arsenic trioxide (As2O3), DST has shown that vitrification could be successfully extended to the stabilization of other arsenical products, such as calcium arsenate (Ca3(AsO4)2) and sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4). In this paper, the vitrification of arsenic in the context of an enargite leaching was newly explored and demonstrated successfully.Two processing routes are being proposed by DST for the removal of arsenic from enargite concentrates and their stabilization by vitrification. In one route, arsenic is extracted by ASL and is then precipitated under atmospheric conditions and with minimal use of reagents and time. The resulting precipitate is an unstable hydrated ferric arsenate (FeAsO4•2H2O) that is then vitrified in a non-dilutive method, significantly increasing the stability of arsenic and meeting the TCLP guideline. Unlike is required for scorodite, stabilization was successfully achieved without concern for the crystallinity of the precipitate."

Keywords: Complex Iron Ores, Roasting, Tin, Zinc, Pellets, Comprehensive Recovery. The complex iron ores containing tin, zinc are typical refractory ores. Large reserves of the ores are found in China and have not been utilized efficiently so far. A new process of tin and zinc recovery and pellet preparation from iron concentrate containing tin and zinc by controlled atmosphere roasting is developed in this investigation. The results of 2573 N/P compression strength of product pellets, the 91.49% and 82.22% volatilization of tin and zinc respectively, are achieved for a concentrate containing 0.39% tin and 0.28% zinc. The strength and chemical compositions of the pellets meet the requirement of blast furnace ironmaking. Volatilization mechanism of tin and zinc are investigated. Thermodynamic study shows that the reduction balance curves of SnO2(s) and SnO(g) are proximate in the presence of carbon, and the standard formation free enthalpy of FeO and SnO2 is also approachable. Therefore, it is difficult to realize the complete volatilization of tin in the form of SnO(g) by selective reduction. But SnO2(s) and SnO(g) will form SnCl4(g) or SnCl2(g) in the presence of chlorides and can be easily volatilized from the ores.

The discovery of ore at Wabana was quickly followed by the mining of the ore beds where they outcropped in the land areas. The third phase, as at present carried out, consists of extensive submarine operations, which were commenced in 1908, by driving a pair of slopes out under Conception bay, opening. the mine for a distance of a mile and a half from the shore. Two other slopes, now driven just beyond the shore line, are being sunk to the submarine territory where, it is generally recognized, huge reserves of ore lie under the bay. The process of erosion of the land, the solution and re-disposition of its iron-bearing minerals in thick beds of ore have been considered elsewhere, but these bear small relation to the physical forces which have acted upon the ore-beds since the deposition of the strata. These physical changes are made manifest by jointing and cleavage and faulting. The discussion of these, the relation they bear to each other, and to the folding of the strata, is the purpose of this article. For the benefit of those who may not be familiar with the formation in which the ore occurs, I include a general summary of the geology of Be!! island and its environs; also a description of conditions that prevailed during the period of deposition, so that the reader may appreciate some of the later changes that took place during or subsequent to its emergence from the sea, and the folding or tilting of the strata to the position it now occupies.

As the mining industry moves further into developing countries in search of new resources, its role in international development is coming under increasing scrutiny. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate, along with the potential for headaches among managers in the industry. Public interest in development and environmental issues is rising as faith in “big business” falls. This has strengthened nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for sustainable development. And it has put more pressure on banks, governments and development agencies to curb corporate misdemeanors. Developing world governments are also becoming emboldened to reject previously agreed terms they do not consider equitable. The mining industry has begun to formulate a response to these pressures but must go much further. Societal and environmental issues must move from public relations to core strategic thinking. Abiding by rules or codes is not a relevant response. Instead, genuine support for sustainable development is required. This will involve delegating the responsibility for engaging with local communities to on-the-ground staff and developing a dialogue with local stakeholders rather than conducting an initial assessment and disengaging.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. Introduction The recent uranium discovery at Theano point, lake Superior, is probably a rediscovery of the first reported Canadian uranium occurrence. A description of material from the original discovery was published in 1847 by J. L. LeConte, and many attempts have been made to relocate the deposit. Such attempts have in the past been unsuccessful because of vagueness in the original description of the locality. Besides being a prospect that seems to merit development work, the Camray discovery is important because it reaffirms the occurrence of pitchblende in the eastern part of the Precambrian shield. Much staking followed the announcement of the discovery, and some additional finds have been reported. Location The Camray discovery is at the shore of Theano point, lake Superior, about seventy miles north of Sault Ste. Marie (see Figure 1). It is in township 29, range XIV, district of Algoma. The showing is two miles from Highway No. 17, and is reached by a rough trail that leaves the highway at mileage 72.9 from Sault Ste. Marie. There are no towns of any size nearer than Sault Ste. Marie.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. The visit reported was made with support from the 1997 J.C. Boyle travelling scholarship. The management and control of hazardous gases released into the underground environment are an integral part of coal mining. The power-generations stations at Appin and Tower collieries, with a combined electrical output of 94 MW, have been operating for some time and have demonstrated a technology that is able to exploit the available gas fully. Contributory factors have been the development and introduction of directional drilling techniques, pre- and post-drainage of coal, relatively high seam permeability, a high gas content of the worked seam, high production rates and a willingness to embrace new ideas and technology

Design of deep foundations for lateral loads requires an understanding of soil-foundation-structure response during loading. Lateral loads on a deep foundation (piles) could be due to earthquakes, winds, waves, and/or machine vibrations. Over the years, analysis of response of piles due to lateral loads evolved from closed-form solutions to p-y methods to strain wedge to finite element/finite difference modeling. Although analysis of lateral response of piles and shafts is routinely performed, there is no single guidance document and/or standard for design and testing. Several different analytical methods are available for the analysis, and the resulting design can result in significantly different responses which can create confusion. This is especially true for analyzing and designing piles in potentially liquefiable soils with lateral spread issues under seismic conditions.This guidance document is intended to assist geotechnical engineers, pile designers, and contractors in analysis, design, and testing of piles and drilled shafts for lateral loads. This document discusses the background of different analytical and testing procedures and presents the recommended methods for analysis, design and testing of piles for lateral loads.Chapter 1 defines the different kinds of lateral loads to which a single pile or pile group may be subjected. This first chapter also presents different types of piles used to resist lateral loads.Chapter 2 discusses geotechnical issues related to lateral pile design such as liquefaction and lateral spreading and other non-seismic issues. Also addressed in Chapter 2 is geotechnical site characterization (as related to lateral loads) in terms of site investigation, in-situ testing, geophysical testing, laboratory testing, and estimation of soil/rock properties.Chapter 3 discusses the background and available analytical methods and tools for the analysis and design of single piles and drilled shafts. Several methods of analyses from closed-form elastic solutions to the finite element/finite difference solutions and their applicability are discussed. Available commercial computer software packages for analyzing single piles and drilled shafts are also presented.Chapter 4 expands the discussion of single piles and drilled shafts into the analysis and design of pile groups. In addition, group effects, resistance of pile caps, results of previous experimental and analytical studies, and available analysis tools and software for pile groups are discussed.Chapter 5 presents the issue of lateral resistance of piles and drilled shafts as discussed in different national and international building and non-building codes. A summary of extensive research on several codes are presented to facilitate the compliance with different codes.Chapter 6 discusses structural design issues of individual piles and drilled shafts such as depth of fixity.Chapter 7 discusses soil structure interaction issues related to kinematic and inertial effects due to seismic loading and available methods of analyses.Chapter 8 discusses and presents the typical procedures for the lateral load testing of piles. This guideline was developed as an aid to the practicing engineer in providing information, direction and commentary on the lateral design of deep foundations. Discussion of the paper of Mr. Granger, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 25, January, 1909, pp. 1 to 37. LEWIS M. HAUPT, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the 'Secretary*) :-This subject is of great interest to me, and I am noting progress and conditions as a test of my own judgment in advocating what I believed to be the nearer, cheaper and better route at Nicaraugua. I have as yet learned nothing to change my views, or modify the convictions which led me to retire from the Commission; but that is not the issue to-day. Our government is committed to the Panama route, and is bound to " make good." There are many points presented by Mr. Granger which seem to me worthy of very serious consideration. But when all is said there remains the risk of seismic convulsions, to which either form of canal is subject; and I fail to see that the risk would be reduced by making the cut deeper, with greater surcharge of lateral pressure upon the side walls. A severe earthquake in the rainy season would doubtless close either type of canal. One of the arguments in favor of the Panama route most insisted on, was that Nature had provided good natural harbors at its termini. Recalling this, it has interested me to note that the cost of creating the necessary harbors is estimated at $27,000,000. Mr. Granger refers to this, and quotes the Board's report to the effect that, on the Atlantic side, it will require 5 miles of jetties to " make an excellent harbor out of a wretched one." The vulnerable part of Mr. Granger's paper seems to me to lie in the admission that the plant required is still in the embryonic stage, and that at least one machine should be built and tested " to demonstrate that the theoretical strains and forces work out in practice exactly as expected." Electronic and Electric Equipment contains a range of components made of a wide variation of metals, plastics and other substances. Up to 60 elements can be found in complex electronic equipment: base metals, precious metals and special metals in circuit boards and batteries. Because of its amount WEEE represents a considerable metal resource with a higher special and precious metal content than found in ores. The Umicore integrated smelter and refinery recovers and supplies back to the market 17 different metals from EEE. Pre-treated materials enter state of the art, material and energy efficient metallurgical processes for environmentally sound recovery of metals and treatment of off gasses and hazardous substances. The organics in the feed function as reducing agent and alternative energy source during smelting for precious metal recovery. Lithium-ion batteries are treated using a dedicated process. As a result the environmental footprint of metals produced from EEE is much smaller than primary production.

The Anaconda Copper Company reportedly reached an exclusive agreement with Cook Inlet Region, Inc., to explore 24 million acres in south-central Alaska and to share equally with Cook the proceeds of any mineral discovery. According to an Anaconda geologist, "the company is anticipating, based on geologic testing, that it will find significant deposits of copper, lead, and zinc. There is also evidence of the presence of precious metals such as silver and gold, and also strong evidence of strategic minerals such as chrome, platinum, tin, and nickel."
