This report describes a study, conducted jointly by BethEnergy Mines Inc. and the Bureau of Mines, to assess the effects of longwall front abutment loading on various supplemental support materials utilized in a predriven recovery room. The purpose of the predriven recovery room is to reduce longwall equipment transfer time by eliminating the premove preparation associated with conventional recovery methods. In addition, the room provides a large area in which face salvage equipment can maneuver. Results of four recovery-room study areas show the progression and influence of the front abutment on the longwall panel and supports and their subsequent behavior. The best performance (i. e. the support that most facilitated recovery) of support material was achieved through the use of a concrete mixture which had a sand content of 35 percent by volume. The longwall transfer time was reduced by 30 percent which translates to a production advantage of 37,000 raw tons of coal per panel.

The principle objective of the research effort described herein was to identify as rapidly as possible a practical trapped miner location system. Much effort has been expended in the past on the development of a highly sophisticated seismic location system [1] for trapped miners. Field tests of this system have shown that the location accuracy is limited by a combination of seismic velocity anomalies, timing errors, and in general by the relatively weak nature of the signals received at the surface. It was first felt that similar propagation anomalies would be experienced by electromagnetic systems, but to a greater extent than the seismic. However, preliminary tests performed by Westinghouse on the Operations and Maintenance Program, Contract No. H0210063 in 1971 and 1972, indicated that an electromagnetic solution to the location problem may be more feasible than a seismic solution. Thus a more concentrated effort was launched in 1972 and 1973 to more completely determine the feasibility of electromagnetic location systems for trapped miners. Two different approaches to the location problem were undertaken on this program: (1) A pulsed electromagnetic system was developed by the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse in Baltimore, and (2) a Continuous Wave (CW) System was developed by Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) in Boulder, Colorado. Part I of this report will deal only with the development and results of CW Location System developed by WGL. The CW Location System was field tested at three eastern coal mines and at one western hardrock mine. The maximum overburden depth penetrated during these tests was 990 feet at the Robena No. 4 mine near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. The earth conductivity at this mine was measured to be 1. 1X102 mhos/m, which combined with the deep overburden make this mine representative of expected worst case conditions for a coal mine EM location exercise.

The two-dimensional predominance area (Kellogg) diagram (PAD) surfaces bounding the three-dimensional Cu-As-S-O system were constructed at 900 K. The computations employed gases As4O6(g), O2(g), and SO2(g) as the independent coordinate species to generate diagrams of As4O6(g) − O2(g),O2(g) − SO2(g), and As4O6(g) − SO2(g), while the third gas (As4O6, O2, or SO2) was fixed. The results indicate that there is no shared boundary between enargite (Cu3AsS4) and copper sulfate (CuSO4); however, at PO2 < 10−6 atm, PAs4O6 < 10−10 atm, and PSO2 > 10−4 atm, CuSO4 is the stable phase at 900 K. The chemical driving force for oxidation of intermediate phases between enargite and copper sulfate is substantial except for basic sulfate (CuO · CuSO4).

Mineral concentrators often use process water that is very saline and/or hard. In this paper the effect of increasing concentrations of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on the rheological properties of 70 wt% quartz suspensions (d5o - 10.6 ¦m) is reported. The apparent viscosity at 100 s t in 5 mol dm -3 sodium chloride solutions (approx. 300,000 ppm) was nearly 500 times the viscosity of water without salt or particles present. Part of the increase in viscosity is caused by aggregation (coagulation) of the suspension.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

GENTLEMEN, lt is with much pleasure I meet you tonight at this the second meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, held in Western Australia, and I sincerely thank you for the honour you have conferred upon me in electing me as your President. I greatly appreciate the distinction, and will endeavour to fulfil the duties of the office to the best of my ability, and hope to prove a worthy successor to those gentlemen who have held the position before me. On behalf of the local members of the Institute, I extend a hearty welcome to the members from the other States of the Commonwealth, who have come so far to attend this meeting, and also to the non-members whom we have invited this evening. We are especially pleased to have Mr. Gregory, our Minister of Mines and Railways, and the Government and School of Mines officials with us; and I take this opportunity to thank the Premier, Mr. Gregory, and the Government officials for the assistance given us, and for doing so much to make the visit of our members from the other States so pleasant and instructive. By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 9 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, whereupon it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and Platinum Group Metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir&apos;T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called &quot;geology&quot; has been indicated in&apos; reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David&apos;s map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia&apos;s mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

"The deportment of gold in residue samples of cyanide leach tests of David Bell ore from level 6A block 13 was established using a comprehensive quantitative mineralogical approach. In every test the feed was first pre-aerated for 4 hours, followed by 48h cyanidation. Test no. 2 was done without lead nitrate and yielded a residue assaying 3.03g Au/t. In test nos. 4 and 9 lead nitrate was added before pre-aeration at 0.03kg/t and 0.3kg/t respectively yielding residues of 1.04 and 0.81 g Au/t.The mineralogical approach employed to establish the deportment of gold involved superpanning, to preconcentrate the free gold and assaying of the tailing fraction to determine the gold associated with quartz. It was thus determined that without lead nitrate added 47.2% of the lost gold is in the form of residual free gold particles less than 20 µm in size. It is this form of gold which is under represented in the residues of leach tests with lead nitrate added.Having eliminated coarseness of gold particles as a factor for lower recovery, it was determined that the residual gold particles have extensively contaminated surfaces. Amongst the deleterious surface contaminants identified: S, As, Ag, Sb and Hg, the two most harmful are S and Hg because of their concentration on the surface and rate of accumulation.Mercury and Ag are minor constituents of native gold at David Bell (average composition Au: 78.9 wt%, Hg: 18.5 wt% and Ag: 2.6 wt%) and they become enriched on the surface of residual gold particles because of their slower rate of dissolution in cyanide. The other elements absorb onto the gold particles from solution.The beneficial effect of lead nitrate was documented by comparative surface analysis of gold from residue samples of 48 hour leach testing with and without lead nitrate added and from time dependent (0-2 hour) leach tests in the presence and absence of lead nitrate. Lead nitrate accelerates the dissolution of gold by performing the following functions: (i) catalytic effect on the cyanidation of gold by accepting electrons; (ii) reaction with surface sulphur to form PbS which is then removed by oxidation; (iii) catalytic reaction on amalgam and Ag facilitating the cyanidation of Hg and Ag thus slowing down their build up onto the dissolving gold particles and (iv) the precipitation of sulphide sulphur from solution thus minimizing its build up on the surface of dissolving gold particles which is believed to facilitate the access of cyanide ions."

Process mineralogy forms an integral part of geometallurgy, with ore body characterisation being but one piece of the puzzle in optimising value derived from ore. This value is not only financial, but importantly speaks to sustainability from environmental and social standpoints. The reactive approach of traditional process mineralogy is increasingly being replaced by predictive methods in the geometallurgical sphere, for which mineralogical information must be timeously acquired on judiciously selected sample sets to understand ore variability and its impact on orebody processing. Such processes are not only metallurgical, but must incorporate mining and waste management protocols. Dwindling resources like water and energy also demand innovative approaches for lowering consumption and/or promoting recycling along the value chain. Addressing such challenges relies on appropriate characterisation of ore behaviour under different process regimes. Coupled with this, emerging characterisation tools are increasingly applied to understand the mineralogy of unconventionallypresented and difficult-to-process ores to meet societal and technology demands. Such tools are often accompanied by the generation of large, computationally intensive datasets, for which data management and storage are key requirements, particularly when deciphering temporal trends in ore and process variability. This paper will elaborate on these themes with examples that highlight the importance of process mineralogy throughout the minerals value chain. "The SIDMIN program aims at filling the mineral processor’s need to know the deportment of ‘minerals of interest’ not just ‘elements of interest’ that pass through the processing plants. Generally, chemistry is used as a tool of routine monitoring on site. Mineralogy, which is relatively much slower, is used more as a tool of research and post mortem investigations and these services are usually provided by a distant facility. The SIDMIN program enables site management to receive chemical and quantitative mineralogical reports on their critical samples daily, simultaneously and affordably.The author developed the SIDMIN program at ZCCM Nchanga Division where it continues to be a powerful tool for monitoring the efficiency of operations. Outlines are given of procedures for quick sample preparation and quantification of significant minerals in process samples. A specimen report is presented, which shows the format of reporting the contributions of individual minerals to metal losses at critical stages of the circuit. It is shown that SIDMIN provides timely information to management, about trends and abrupt changes in the quality of ore, and its processing, in a way never achievable by chemical analyses alone. This greatly helps in resolving the age-old problem of ‘bad ore’ or ‘bad operations’ on a day-by-day basis. For example increase in copper mica in the feed indicates excessive ore dilution during mining. Increased loss of free sulphides was traced to insufficient reagent conditioning time at the Concentrator. Persistent losses of leachable oxides at the Tailings Leach Plant were traced to inadequate leach residence time.SIDMIN is affordable because it can be implemented using basic optical microscopes, minimal quantities of micro-chemical reagents and custom trained site staff who demonstrate good colour perception and an ability to follow laid down procedures consistently."

The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. It is common to use the gradation in collecting power of homologous series of xanthates, as well as the more specific effects of activators and depressants, to achieve the separation of sulphides.The original aim of the work was to ascertain whether sodium salts of fatty acids (anionic) and fatty amine aceta:tes (cationic) could be selected from a homologous series to achieve better selectivity in separation of nonsulphide minerals by flotation. MeRcuRy is one of the strategic metals of which the supply has been raised from critical uncertainty to more than enough for essential demands. Work by the Bureau of Mines has contributed substantially to increased production of mercury in the United States and to consequent accumulation of Government stocks. Other contributing factors have been higher prices for mercury and Government loans to operators. The Bureau has undertaken 13 exploration projects, 10 of which have been completed. This work has comprised 28,376 ft. of several types of drilling and 23,798 lin. ft. of surface trenching, and has indicated commercial ore containing 34,800 flasks of mercury and marginal ore containing 26,200 flasks, a total of 61,000 flasks; equivalent, respectively, to domestic production for 8 months, 6 months, and 14 months. As Government stocks are now adequate, domestic production (currently at the rate of 50,000 flasks per year) is gradually being curtailed through Government control of labor and operating supplies. Introduction Mercury was one of the seven metals designated as strategic by the Army and Navy Munitions Board in 1939, when Congress appropriated funds for the investigation of domestic sources of supply of war minerals. The Bureau of Mines immediately started a limited search for strategic minerals, but the first mercury project was not begun until December 1940. The U. S. Geological Survey assisted in the search for cinnabar by contributing information on domestic mercury deposits, preparing maps, and making geological studies of exploration projects. The present high rate of production of mercury in the United States was encouraged by the increase in price to $196 per flask at New York (Fig. I) and Government loans to operators for mine development and plant construction. The Bureau of Mines has issued, for restricted distribution subject to wartime controls, 13 War Minerals Reports on individual mercury deposits (listed in appendix A). In March 1942 it also published a Progress Report of the Metallurgical Division, R. I. 3627, Cinnabar-reduction Plants of the Southwestern Arkansas Quicksilver District. Uses of Mercury Mercury and its compounds have more than 3000 uses. Its principal use is as a catalyst in the manufacture of gases for chemical warfare; the next largest is in pharmaceuticals. Mercury is essential also for: (I) certain electrical apparatus, (2) industrial control instruments at many war plants, (3) munitions, including blasting caps, (4) insecticides in agriculture, (5) antifouling paint for ship bottoms, (6) dental preparations, (7) general laboratory use, and (8) amalgamation of free-milling gold ores.

"Mechanical alloying (MA) synthesizing technology and thennohydrogen processing (THP) were utilized to produce nanocrystalline Ti-MMC's reinforced by TiB intermetallic compound by using TiH2-B powder mixtures. Powders MA'ed up to 8 hours were examined by X-ray diffraction and SEM study. All MA'ed powders afterwards were HIP'ed at 700, 800 and 950EC for 1 hour. Detailed XRD, SEM and TEM study of the samples were carried out to determine the structure and micrography of the Ti-TiB MMC material processed by MA+THP approach followed by HIP'ing at high temperatures.IntroductionThe fiber reinforced titanium base composites [1,2] which possess a great resistance to high temperature have been investigated. In these studies fibers of C and SiC were used as reinforcing materials. However, these fibers react with Ti-matrix at elevated temperature resulting in product formation at the interface between the matrix and the fiber. Because of the chemical reactions, strength of the product MMC material diminishes.In conventional techniques of whisker reinforced composite material production, the mixtures of matrix metal powders and dispersed fibers are consolidated by hot pressing, HIP and/or hot extrusion. These techniques, however, have some shortcomings. Hard and brittle fibers could be broken during mixing cycle of the processing. Consolidation techniques could also be the cause for fiber breakdown. Attaining of the uniform dispersion of fibers into the metal matrix is not an easy process. The chemical reactions at elevated temperature exposures in the interface between the matrix material and fiber reinforcement cause product formations leading to poor mechanical properties."

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. El presente texto describe el proceso de recuperación de las partículas ultrafinas de casiterita en los relaves de la mina San Rafael a través de diversas pruebas metalúrgicas, donde se usaron dos tipos de concentradores centrífugos, los cuales indicaron la posibilidad de una recuperación de 50%, produciendo concentrados de 50% Sn. Asímismo, se instala una planta piloto donde se verifica el proceso de las distintas configuraciones y combinación de equipos, como el efecto de las cargas circulantes. Paralelo a ello, se realizan pruebas para aumentar la ley de los concentrados primarios y así obtener concentrados finales a través de concentración gravimétrica.
