This awareness will create a better understanding of the permitting process within the several groups in mining companies that are responsible for getting the mine project started or continue its operations.

Sensors are everywhere in the mining industry, with sensor information being used to monitor and operate processes. Therefore, when sensor information is wrong, economic losses can occur. Unfortunately, sensor errors are usually not detected till they become large. This is problematic as most calibrate their sensors no more than once a year (Beamex, n.d.). Using principles of data mining, where all relevant information is tapped to glean hidden information, Pothina [8] designed an algorithm to detect errors in temperature sensors in gold stripping circuit in Pogo mine, Alaska. This paper continued his work by analyzing the behavior of the algorithm on baseline data and testing the algorithm in new data and under more rigorous conditions. It also made a change to the algorithm. The modified algorithm performed very well in the new data. It also worked well under the new error conditions. Three types of errors were seeded, a fixed additive error (+ 2%), a fixed subtractive error (− 2%), and a noisy, normally distributed error, with a mean value of + 2%. Artificially seeded errors were detected within about 20 gold stripping cycles. Inherent bias in operation impacted algorithm performance by increasing the number of cycles needed to detect errors. This paper reinforced Pothina’s [8] conclusion that when data mining approach is used, sensor errors can be detected even when they are pretty low. Significant economic losses can thus be minimized.

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

The electrowinning of beryllium from beryllium oxide (BeO) using a molten-salt electrolyte composed of 56 LiF-37 BeF2-7 BeO (mole-percent) was investigated. Anodes made of porous carbon were found to be superior in current-carrying capacity and gave a lower cell voltage than other types of anode material tested. When porous carbon anodes were used) the resultant increase in anode area prevented anode passivation. The cell voltage was 3.3 volts) and electrode current efficiencies of 50 to 70 percent were obtained. The electrodeposited beryllium was recovered as beryllium powder or was coalesced to metal beads by heating to 1,300° C.

The Bureau of Mines has used gross alpha and gross beta detectors to continuously measure radiation working levels for a number of years. During this time, improvements have been made in the design and performance of continuous working-level (CWL) detectors. This report discusses the improved designs and some of the operating principles and applications of CWL detectors in the measurement of radon daughter products in mines and dwellings.

An experimental system has been designed to monitor on-line variations of leaching parameters in a closed circuit of cyanide leaching solutions and gold bearing ores. Experiments performed to deter-mine variations in some important leaching parameters of the solution: pH, dissolved oxygen, free cyanide, oxidation/reduction potential, gold content, temperature, pressure and solution chemistry. By comparing results obtained when the leaching solution is allowed to become acid or kept basic, it was possible to infer the chemical reactions that occurred between the solution and the ores.

KIeeman (1968) described practice in the Mount Hebbard dump concentrator, Broken Hill, N.S.W. The purpose of this note is to give data on flotation pulp chemistry in the plant for comparison with results of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b).Ten chemical parameters were measured at ten points in the circuit using the techniques of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b). Fig. 1 shows a condensed time plot of some continuous measurements in conditioner overflow and rougher feed. Fig. 2 shows average values of selected parameters at the start and end of each of the three rougher flotation stages.DISCUSSIONpH and redox potentiaIsFig. 1 shows that pH and Eh were relatively constant at the start of sulphide lead flotation. There was a fairly steady increase in pH throughout the circuit (Fig. 2), but flotation was always conducted in a slightly acid pulp in spite of the large amount of alkaline reagents added. Eh values became more positive as the pulp progressed through the circuit (Fig. 2) in accord with results elsewhere.

WHEN the writer resided at Zeehan, qn the West Coast of Tasmania, some years ago, he took a keen interest in the geology of the district and availed himself of the opportunity to investigate occurrences, of the varied minerals in which the field abounds. The following notes were compiled as a result of one of his periodical visits to the outlying mining districts, when an examination was made of the bindsay Reward tin mining property, which has an area of 140 acres. This is most easily reached from Renison Bell, the centre of the North Dundas tin-fields, on the Emu Bay railway, 'about' eight miles north east of Zeehan. Thence a pack track some 14 -miles long connects with the mine, crossing the Piemah River by a fine suspension bridge.The mine itself is situated on the main south leading spot of the Parson's Hood Range, at an altitude of some 1600 ft. above sea level. The Parson's Hood Range is composed of granite and is an extension of the rugged Meredith Range. A remarkable feature is the uniform topography of the surrounding country when viewed from the peaks. Except where dissected by the rivers and creeks, the surface is practically level and, indeed, affords a striking illustration of an ancient uplifted peneplain.The mine has been opened by means of trenches and adits, and the ore-body proved to extend for a length of 30 chains, with an average width of about 100 ft. Its general trend is west-north-west, and its dip, which is steep, corresponds to that of the country-rocks. These latter, which are of sedimentary origin and generally regarded as of pre-Silurian age, have been tilted at high angles, consequent, no doubt, on the crustal movements produced by the intrusion of the huge granitic masses which now form the high ranges in the vicinity.It may be here remarked that it is not Within the scope of this paper to deal with the sequence of events leading to the geological structure...

Ilmenite-bearing paleo-beach deposits were discovered in Jylland, Denmark using a combination of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), portable X-ray fluorescence (XMET), bulk XRF analyses, Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM), and wire line logging. The Miocene-age paleo-beach deposits are located below a thin Quaternary cover in a region of very moderate relief and essentially no outcrop demanding unique approaches in exploration. Initially, an isopach map of the Quaternary is prepared from existing water well data. A geological model for likely occurrence of Miocene paleo-beach deposits is generated and the coincidence of thin Quaternary cover and potential paleo-beach deposits define targets for detailed exploration. The defined targets are traversed with GPR to identify paleo-beach structures which are then used to define a drilling program. This methodology located a paleo-barrier island at the Vorslunde location with more than 10% ilmenite in the sand. During the drilling process, the TiO2 and heavy mineral contents of the sand were logged every meter with a portable XRF unit (XMET) and subsequently calibrated more accurately by comparison to bulk XRF and CCSEM analyses for selected samples. The bulk XRF data also provided more complete compositional information. Insitu determination of geology, heavy mineral abundance, and corroboration of the XRF logging was done using wire line logs, a combination of spectral gamma and induction conductivity logs. Detailed characteristics (abundance, grain size, shape) and chemical composition of minerals was determined by the GEUS CCSEM methodology (Frei et al, this vol.). The average weight percent TiO2 for all Ti-minerals is 62%, 60% excluding rutile. That elevated TiO2 content (>> ilmenite stoichiometric value, ca. 50 %) indicates that ilmenite experienced an iron-leaching environment. The source of the sand deposit was investigated by dating contained zircon. The results show that the likely sources of zircon are in southern Norway and southwestern Sweden with common zircon ages of ca 1100 Ma. and 1500 Ma.

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

In-1992, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the Anderson Mountain study area, including RARE II area 4-942, in Lemhi County, Idaho. The 7,340-ha study area lies within the Salmon National Forest about one kilometer north of the old mining town of Gibbonsville (pop.: 100). The eastern boundary of the study area is formed by the crest of the Bitterroot Range. The crest also serves as the continental Divide, and as the border between Idaho and Montana. The study area lies within the Gibbonsville Mining District, an important past producer of gold from lode and placer deposits. Since the 1870's, several hundred claims for both types have been located in the study area. Thirty-six current (1992) lode claims and two patented claim groups (one lode and one placer) are wholly or partially in the study area. No placer claims are current. In all, twenty-seven lode and five placer properties in and adjacent to the study area were investigated. Workings on the properties included 2 caved shafts; 36 caved adits; 8 open adits; 120 small pits, cuts, and trenches; and 4 large dozed cuts.

This report describes in detail the work done on the development of the Time Domain Reflectometry Microcomputer (TDRM). Modifications to the FMC-Model 302A Cable Fault Locator is described in Appendix D. The TDRM unit uses an 8080 microcomputer to accurately locate major faults in low capacitance cables to within ± 1 foot when properly calibrated. Major faults in high capacitance cables are usually located within ± 5 feet. The upper limits of fault detection are <1 kilohm shunt fault and >7 ohm series fault. In practice fault detection limits are reduced to <300 ohms shunt fault and >30 ohms series fault because of discontinuities caused by cable repair.

"Since late 1980s the research group led by late Professor Andre Robert Laplante at McGill University undertook fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson Concentrator (KC) and developed a sustainable method to correctly estimate gravity recoverable gold (GRG). In the early time a concept of ‘free gold’ was used, it was defined as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, its practical use had declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson Concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. Through more than 10 years’ improvement and optimization, this technique had become a standard method to evaluate GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. Until 2006, about 200 GRG tests had been carried out at McGill University for the ores from all over the world. Recently, a modified version of GRG test (short test) with the advantages of reduced processing time and lower cost had been developed for the mundane needs of gold industry.INTRODUCTIONGold gravity recovery has evolved significantly over the past twenty-five years, mainly because of the advent of the Knelson Concentrator (Knelson 1988, 1990, 1992, Laplante 2000). Now, a series of Knelson Concentrators for different applications are manufactured and used in gold industry all over the world (Knelson Concentrators 2004).In 1980s the Knelson Concentrator gained acceptance from mining industry as an effective device for the recovery of gold from grinding circuit. Knelson Concentrator became the obvious choice because of its design features: a relatively long processing time without concentrate discharge (compared to some other centrifuges, such as Falcon Concentrator and Chinese Yunxi Centrifuge at that time), large throughput capacity, treating a wide size range of material, yielding a high grade concentrate with small mass that could easily be smelted. As more and more Knelson Concentrators were accepted in gold industry, mineral processing engineers faced with challenges: what are the separation mechanisms of the Knelson Concentrator? How much gold can be extracted for an ore if a Knelson Concentrator is installed? For answering these questions, a laboratory scale Knelson Concentrator was created."

T HIS has been a most momentous year in the annals of the Institute. We have been in the midst of a situation which, were it not for the convulsions of social unrest with which life is surrounded on every side, would have attracted the attention of the world at large. I do not refer to the desperate campaign for new members. That has gone on much as usual except that, this being leap year, the annual proposal to the M. & M. Society has been omitted. Nor do I refer to the desperate situation which we found in other directions, the spread of Bolshevism, the burning of the Engineers&apos; Club, the fact that the selling of copper appears to have become one of the lost arts. No, I speak of the great question which has to be. settled once and for all, as to whether this great Institute should adopt simplified spelling. The whole trouble started in the ranks of the California Hysterical Society. It appears, while most of the San Francisco members can read and write, several of them cannot spell. It also appears that the Secretary, in editing the Transactions, has perhaps made just a little bit too much of a point of employing the correct Stoughton idiom. At any rate, the rebels filed an amendment to the constitution, and the stage was set for civil war, with perhaps more stress on war than on civil.

La extracción del mineral es el método más habitual para la explotación minera y se realiza a través de rampas, galerías, y túneles que permitan el acceso hasta la zona de minado. Sin embargo, cuando se da una excesiva profundizaciión del terreno, se emplea el método de pique vertical ya que logra el acceso de los operarios a las zonas más profundas de un modo más rentable y rápido a través de la extracción del mineral por izado de vagones o skip hasta el de nivel de superficie o intermedio. Por ello, es común que las minas replanteen la sustitución de su sistema de extracción habitual por el de izado por piques. En este sentido, el presente trabajo desarrolla la aplicación de los piques verticales en los sondeos de exploracion de la mina Hullera Vasco Leonesa. La primera parte del proyecto describe la ejecución de dos piques verticales (Aurelio y Emilio del Valle), y la segunda, en la ejecución de más de 17.000 m de galerías y obras de infraestructura de diversa índole.

X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of binary Mn-rich alloys with Ti revealed the presence of intermediate phases in this system. A binary R phase has been identified and also a phase having an a-Mn type structure. The X-ray pattern of the phase TiMn3 is presented and a tentative phase diagram for the Mn-rich portion of this binary system has been constndcted. MANGANESE-rich alloys with titanium have been subjected to thermal analysis at temperatures down to 1100°C by Hellawell and Hume-Rothery.1 Their results indicate the existence of an intermediate phase TiMn3 in this binary system. This phase appears to coexist with the Laves phase TiMn2, and with terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese, at least down to 1100°C. The above investigators did not attempt to determine the crystal structure of this phase, however. Since, by analogy to the binary systems Mn-V and Mn-Cr3 one might expect to find a phase in this region of the diagram, it seemed desirable to obtain X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys in the concentration range in question, in order to ascertain whether the sigma phase or related structures occur. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese and iodide titanium in a water-cooled copper crucible under a helium atmosphere. Excess manganese was added to each melt in order to allow for losses incurred during melting. The alloys were then wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes for annealing at various temperatures, as shown in Table I, followed by quenching in cold water. Although the inside of the tubes showed evidence for some loss of manganese from the specimen during annealing, there was no evidence of any reaction between the specimen and either the molybdenum foil or the quartz tube at these temperatures. It was later found that the manganese loss was considerably reduced by annealing these alloys in sealed quartz tubes containing one atmosphere of purified argon. As an added precaution the surface of each specimen was ground off before crushing the alloys to -270 mesh powder, using a hardened steel mortar and pestle. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using either FeKa or CrKa radiation in an asymmetrical focusing camera, which gave excellent dispersion of the closely spaced lines. Pictures were also obtained using a Debye camera of 5-cm radius which provided data in the angular region not covered by the focusing camera. The alloy specimens were polished and examined metallographically, using an etchant consisting of 60 pct glycerine, 20 pct nitric acid, and 20 pct hydrofluoric acid. The 10-g buttons were in each case broken in half and found to be well-melted and free of any gross segregation. One half of certain alloy buttons was submitted to chemical analysis in the "as-cast" condition. No appreciable change in composition seemed to occur during annealing . THE indexing of a field-ion micrograph is in many cases similar to the indexing of the poles of a stereo-graphic projection.* If one has a standard projection as a guide, the task of indexing is relatively simple. In this way, field-ion micrographs of bcc and fcc wires have been oriented from projections available in most any text on X-ray diffraction. These books always illustrate the projections for the bcc and fcc structures and even for a particular hcp structure. There is no "standard" hcp projection because the angles between planes depend on the c/o ratio of the unit cell. In order to index field-ion micrographs of hcp metals, one must compute the angles between various planes—a rather laborious task. In recent work,, we have had to identify the structure and index the orientation of field-ion micrographs of the compounds WC and W,C. To overcome the problem of computing angles by hand or calculator, a program was written in Fortran lV for use on the IBM 360, Model 50 which will compute all angles between planeswith indices (hlklll) and (17,k,l2) in the range from (447) to (444) for any given c/o ratio. The program, which is more specific than that of Camp and clum, was so written as to take advantage of the multiplicity of the hexagonal system, and, for the limits defined above, only 26,649 values out of a possible 265,721 values had to be computed. This is a 90 pct saving in time (and cost) and was accomplished in the following way. Because the lattice parameters of the hexagonal crystal system are defined such that: a = b * c [1] the I index does not enter into the multiplicity (i.e., it cannot be transposed with the h or k indices), and all possible values of h and I, from 4 to 4 must be used—a total of eighty-one combinations. The index h2 varies the most—it must assume values from - Ill,: to 3Ihl. The indices kl and k2 are always equal and vary

IN reviewing the design of the ore haulage system for the Morenci project, the reader should bear in mind that the railroad and its equpiment cannot be considered as an independent railroad provided only for the purpose of transporting ore from one point to another, but as an integral part of the operation which begins at the electric shovels loading ore at the mine, and ends where the ore, after having been crushed in the primary crushing plant, is deposited in the bins at the secondary crushing plant. Obviously then, the problem consisted of designing a system that would function to the best possible advantage in complete co-ordination with the other units.

Specifically, I will discuss what is currently happening with leadership and leadership development in members’ own organizations, what skill sets are important to develop in different hierarchical groups and how comprehensive leadership courses like the leading in Mining course can help improve leadership within individuals and the industry. Leadership development is a process not an event.

This programming focus is particularly relevant for this annual meeting, as it will be hosted in the center of America’s transportation hub and industrial mineral center. Cincinnati, located on the Ohio River, is key to the movement of America’s supplies and construction material needs.
