Electrical ad thermal-conductivity measurements have been made on titanium and 6 titanium alloys. The following expression was derived for calculating thermal conductivity from electrical conductivity: K = 0.626 s T x 10-8 + 0.00497 where K = thermal conductivity, cal sec-1 cm-2 cm0C-1 s = electrical conductivity, ohm-]cm-1 T = temperature, deg Kelvin This expression gives calculated thermal conductivities that are not in error by more than 10 pct from the experimental values for A-55 titanium and the 6 alloys measured; namely, A-110AT, C-110M, C-130AM, Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-140A, and Ti-155A, which are representative of the presently available commercial a and a-ß titanium alloys. THERMAL conduction in a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid is accomplished by energy diffusion from molecule to molecule, a relatively slow process. For this reason, such materials have a low thermal conductivity. When a material is crystalline, there is in addition a heat transfer by a vibratory motion of the crystal lattice. It is the contribution of this lattice conduction that makes a crystal a much better conductor than a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid. Lattice conduction, however, does not account for the relatively enormous thermal conductivity of a metal. This is explained by the freedom of movement of valence electrons. These valence electrons drift in a metal in a direction toward a drop in electrical potential and, to a lesser degree, in the direction of a temperature drop in the metal. Since both the electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal depend upon the presence of free electrons, there should be some relatively simple relation between the two. Wiedemann and Franz in 1653 first discovered an approximate empirical relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities of metals at the same temperature. This ratio varies appreciably with temperature, and Lorenz later showed that by adding a temperature factor to the Wiedemann-Franz ratio the value of K/(s T) is constant, where K is the thermal conductivity, a the electrical conductivity, and T the absolute temperature. This Lorenz constant shows a greater variation for alloys than it does for pure metals, the ratio increasing slightly as the proportion of alloying elements increases. It has been found that a closer correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity can be obtained by means of an equation of the form K - A s T + B [1] where A and B are constants. In this equation the term AsT is the contribution of electronic conduction and B is the contribution of lattice conduction to the total thermal conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS Electrical-resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements on titanium and 6 titanium alloys serve as the basis for determining an equation of the K = AsT + B type for titanium alloys. Specimens—Table I shows nominal compositions of the 7 metals on which electrical and thermal conductivities were measured. The electrical and thermal-conductivity specimens for each alloy were taken from stock of the same heat and usually from adjacent sections of the same bar. The growing availability of information and data analysis capabilities of recent years provides new opportunities for improving the performance of mining operations. By using real-time measurements and artificial intelligence, it is possible to respond faster to changing conditions, while accurate and timely information permits rapid evaluation of changes and fast business improvement decisions. This article presents a blueprint for alignment of systems, organizational design, and management practices to leverage these developments in performance-driven operations management in mining and mineral processing. The first component of the blueprint is a performance framework with a system of key performance indicators for production control that can be used across organizational levels. This system places improvement at the core of management activities, giving greater importance to improvement skills at lower organizational levels, so companies can leverage available information for improving operational control. Secondly, the blueprint defines an organizational structure that strengthens performance improvement with technological and change management capabilities. Finally, the blueprint proposes alignment of management practices, covering the optimization of short-interval controls, the application of an improvement project portfolio management system that determines the ownership of improvement projects, and the coordination of controls across the organization. This combination of systems, organizational design, and management alignment supports rapid decision-making at the right organizational level. Introduction of the presented blueprint for operations management enables mines to leverage the developments in information and analysis capabilities to improve the performance of operations.

Air was blown into the molten slag as oxygen resource during the dynamic oxidation. It was found that the oxidation is not only in favour of Ti components into perovskite phase, but also the increase of slag temperature and decrease of slag viscosity during the dynamic oxidation promote the precipitation and growth of perovskite phase, average crystal size of perovskite phase is 48 µm. The experimental result realizes the selective enrichment of Ti components and coarsening of perovskite phase, perovskite phase can be separated by mineral dressing method.

Two analytical solutions for estimating the ovaling deformation and forces in circular tunnels are widely used in engineering practice, due to soil-structure interaction under seismic loading. This paper discusses the discrepancy between the two analytical and finite difference methods. A comparison of the two analytical methods shows that the calculated forces and displacements are identical for the condition of full-slip between the tunnel lining and ground. However, the calculated lining thrusts differ by an order of magnitude when considering no-slip between the tunnel lining and the ground. The analytical solutions are compared to numerical analyses of the no-slip condition using the finite difference method to validate which of the two methods provide the correct method. To achieve the goal, numerical modelling, field data of the Kuhin railway tunnel and Manjil earthquake characteristics are used. Numerical analysis results agree with one of the analytical solutions that provides a higher estimate of the thrust on the tunnel lining, thus highlighting the limitation of the other analytical solution.

"INTRODUCTIONCominco Limited, one of the free world's largest producers of lead and zinc having majority ownership in Pine Point Mines Ltd., operates a mining and concentrating complex on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The mine was developed in 1963-64 and commenced operation late in 1964 with the direct shipping of high grade ore. The concentrator started production in November 1965 at a design throughput rate of 5,000 T.P.D.In 1968, the Company acquired the mining rights to a large ore body located to the east of the Pine Point claims and subsequently an expansion program at the concentrator raised the throughput rate to 8,000 T.P.D. The expansion included a third grinding circuit and additional flotation capacity. The flotation capacity took the form of a completely separate circuit from the existing flotation plant. In 1972, the zinc flotation circuits were modified to include two additional stages of cleaning. This change concluded the ""Pre-Consolidation Flotation"" circuit at Pine Point.In considering these modernization programs of the flotation section of the concentrator, the philosophy was to utilize the largest available machine having proven and modern technological changes. With the advent of the large capacity machines available in the late 1970's, it was considered a suitable time to revamp the entire flotation circuit at Pine Point in 1979. The Circuit Consolidation Project was developed to meet this requirement."

Copper ores are widespread through the Lachlan Geosyncline in New South Wales, but the size of the orebodies is generally small. The largest deposits occur in the Cobar district where an iron-rich copper ore type has been developed in Silurian sediments. Similar de- . posits to the south in the Nymagee-Mt. Hope-Melrose districts are related to quartz feldspar porphyries of probable Upper Silurian age. Deposits to the east in the Tottenham-Girilambone districts are less complex mineralogically and are possibly related to an ultra-basic source.Copper mineralization in the Highlands further to the east is often developed in Ordovician andesite or MiddleUpper Silurian acid volcanic sequences. The deposits in andesite contain considerably less galena than those in the acid extrusives; a small proportion of the mineralization in the latter has texture, mineralogy, and geologic setting analogous to the Captain's Flat copper-Iead-zinc deposit, for which both syngenetic and epigenetic origins have been proposed. Very little copper mineralization occurs within granitic material, even though rocks of this type ranging from Silurian to Carboniferous in age crop out through much of the geosyncline, and the extent of the metal contribution from plutons to the deposits in volcanics is open to question. Numerous deposits are known in the contact zone around Mid-Devonian and Mid-Carboniferous granites, however, and the formation of these orebodies has undoubtedly been influenced by plutonic activity. Small occurrences of copper with associated minor nickel sulphides are developed in a narrow serpentinite belt of possible Lower-Middle Devonian age in the southern section of the Highlands.

The maximum current density at which conventional copper electrowinning plants will result in satisfactory, adherent, and dendrite·free cathodes is determined by the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. A decrease in the value of that thickness will permit an increase in the current density. This fact is utilized to develop a high current density cell in which the reduction of the boundary layer thickness is accomplished by means of a specially designed electrolyte circulation system. The high current density cell is used to determine the effect of current density on such process parameters as current efficiency, cell voltage, power consumption, and cathode purity. A number of empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the magnitude of these effects.

"1. INTRODUCTIONIn the past two decades, low-grade gold and silver ore bodies in the United States have been exploited by heap leaching, primarily with sodium cyanide solutions. This method has proven to be a viable alternative to conventional milling due to its low capital and operating costs. Successes have been made, particularly in Nevada, where ores are well oxidized and the climate is conducive to this method. in recent years, heap leaching has been tried in northern latitudes with some success, however, in using this method, operators face more severe limitations than do their neighbours to the south.This paper evaluates the limitations of heap leaching with particular emphasis on northern climates and introduces an alternative method to recover precious metal values in a continuous vat. This proprietory technology, known as the Mackie Vat Leaching Jig, shows promise, with improved gold recovery and potential to operate in cold climates.2. WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS TO HEAP LEACHING?Heap leaching of non-refractory ores is subject to the following limitations:1. Minimum amount of free gold and nuggets in the ore.?. Minerology of the ore--accessibility of gold to lixiviant.3. Minimum particle size and size distribution of crushed product to allow percolation of lixiviant through the heap.4. Minimum amount of clays or clay-like slimes that can cause coating of ore particles and channelling of lixiviant.5. Minimum strength of ore particles or agglomerations to allow economic height of heaps to be built.6. Amount and suitability of real estate.7. Amount and type of precipitation.8. In this work, a gram-positive bacteria was used as biosorbent to elucidate the aluminum load capacity under different conditions related to metallurgical and chemical plants. The sorption data followed the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. In order to determine the best isotherm fit, three error analysis methods were used to assess the data: correlation coefficient (R2), residual root mean square error (RMSE) and Chi-square test. The error analysis established that the Dubinin-Radushkevich model fits better the aluminum biosorption data. The maximum sorption capacity was found to be 41.59 mg.g-1. The maximum removal of aluminum was 95% at pH around 5. The experimental kinetics data was evaluated considering two models (pseudo-second order and pseudo-first order). This study indicated that the R. opacus is an environmental friendly biosorbent.

The gold that is not recovered by a particular process is refractory to that process. A study to determine how the refractory gold is associated in the ore constituents usually indicates the needed improvement in the process or additional methods for bettering recovery. In preliminary work, segregation of the various minerals, gangue or impurities, and data showing the reactions of each in the recovery method readily confines the refractory gold to a certain part on which extensive research can be directed. In this dissecting plan, the microscope is an important aid in locating the refractory gold but should be supplemented by chemical tests.

The year 1979 was a period of increased activity for the world's mineral industry, distinctly in contrast with 1978 when estimated world crude mineral output value declined slightly and most phases of the industry's activity were somewhat curtailed. In 1979, most major mineral commodities recorded significant gains in output, with a substantial number achieving new record highs; details on trade levels for 1979 were not available, but increases over those of 1978 were expected on the basis of partial data. Consumption of most commodities edged higher; in some cases the higher demand levels were met largely through draw-downs of stocks accumulated in recent years, while in other cases notable output increases were required to meet demand. Actually, 1978 was not a bad year for all elements of the mineral industry if changes in output levels of the various commodities are considered as a measure of performance. There were far more individual commodities registering production increases between 1977 and 1978 than registered declines, but some of those reported as declining were relatively major commodities (bauxite, aluminum, copper and zinc were notable), Moreover, the upturn in productive activity in 1978 was not matched by increases in profits. However, 1979 was unquestionably a year of renewed expansion efforts, although some commodity areas, most notably the steel industry component, were still experiencing difficulties.

"Deteriorating ore grade and high demand of metals has tremendously influenced the unit capacity of SAG mills. Pebble circuits have been added to the existing SAG circuits to increase their unit capacity. To make the pebble circuits justifiable, the grate openings are increased almost to 4.5 inches to draw large quantity of pebbles. The inherent transportation problems associated with SAG mills in closed circuit with pebble fraction are more complicated than the single stage SAG mill operation, because the coarse pebbles behave significantly different to that of slurry in pulp lifters. In addition, operation of mills at higher speed, to take advantage of precise design of high release angled shell lifters significantly reduces the discharge efficiency of the conventional pulp dischargers. The presence of a sizable quantity of pebbles in the pulp lifter limits the space available and reduces the flow gradient through the grate thus increases the load inside the mill and hence the mill power-draw. This paper analyses all the problems associated in discharge of slurry and pebbles in SAG mills with pebble circuits. The Outokumpu patented Turbo Pulp Lifter (TPLTM) aims at eliminating the inherent material transport problems to ensure good grinding conditions. Recent installation of TPLTM in a 26-ft SAG mill has proven these claims by reducing the specific power consumption while increasing the mill capacity.INTRODUCTIONThe conventional wisdom is to look at the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill as just another grinding mill in which ball charge, mill filling, and mill speed are varied to attain maximum throughput. Liner design for the SAG was also approached more from a wear perspective rather than a metallurgical and hydraulic-flow perspective. The extensive research work carried out by Latchireddi and Morrell (1997,2003a and 2003b) has demonstrated to think of the SAG as more of a pump in which the grates and pulp discharger end (“impeller”) were designed to efficiently discharge the product sized particles smaller than the grate size with minimal recirculation out of the mill.The rock load in the mill is essentially depends on ore characteristics and the discharge rate of broken particles. The discharge rate of the product material depends on how efficiently the discharge pump (grate and pulp lifters) is operating. Similar to the impeller design affecting the pump capacity, the pulp lifter design affects the discharge capacity (or mill throughput) of the SAG/AG grinding mills. The general arrangement of AG/SAG mills discharge system is shown in Figure 1."

"This paper describes the history of LDV measurements employed in research involving gas-solid flows. Much of the discussion deals with measurement techniques employed to obtain separate and simultaneous solid and gas phase velocities. Also, LDV based measurement techniques that arc used to obtain particle size and concentration information in conjunction with the velocity measurements arc presented.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous examples of industrial processes in which the motion of a solid or droplet dispersed phase in a suspending gas phase is critically important. The applications range from spray droplets injected into combustion chambers to the understanding of the time release mechanisms of particles generated by dissolving pharmaceutical tablets. In many of these processes, the heat, mass, and/or momentum transfer between the dispersed phase and the suspending fluid arc the items of interest. In the past, much of the phenomena were characterized by empirical models derived from flow averaged measurements. Gradual developments in laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), have provided researchers with an unobtrusive measurement technique capable of obtaining the particle size velocity and concentration with good spatial resolution.In the two decades that LDV instrumentation has been available, most of the uses have concentrated on single phase fluid flow measurements. The light scattered from seed particles small enough to follow complex fluid motions, including turbulence, is converted into velocity information. While the utility of this instrument in single phase flows has been demonstrated beyond question, the use of LDV in gas-solid multiphase flows has had a more gradual development. The measurements ·of interest in these flow regimes are usually the velocity of the suspending fluid as well as that of the dispersed particulate phase. Early investigators were quick to see the potential of this instrument for measurements in gas-solid flows. The interest soon expanded to the development of instruments that could also simultaneously measure particle size and concentration within a two-phase flow field.This paper tracks the historical development of LDV technology as applied to gas-solid flows. The techniques to measure particle velocity, size, and concentration arc treated in separate sections although much of the development occurred simultaneously. Finally, some unique applications conducted at West Virginia University and other locations will be discussed in the application section."

It has had considerable experience in particular in the reclamation of gold mine tailings in the Canadian Shield since the latter part of the sixties when most gold mines were closing down.A typical example is the famous Hollinger Mine in Timmins which produced $566 million worth of metal from 1910 to 1968 and had left behind some 56 million tons of tailings covering about 1,000 acres which were reclaimed on very short order and are now lush meadows of agricultural quality.To date, practically all gold mine tailings have been reclaimed once and for all by establishing a permanent, self-sustaining and maintenance free vegetation cover.RECLAMATION & THE MINING TOWNSThe first appreciation of people in a mining community where the tailings have been revegetated will be noticing one day the elimination of dusty conditions that used to arise formerly on every dry and windy day. In that respect, EROCON encourages not only vegetating the tailings but also the immediate surroundings of the mills and plants themselves at active mines. The elimination of windborne dust will result in an appreciable decrease in maintenance costs of plant and machinery and more pleasant working conditions for all."

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has let a contract for the excavation of three rock stations, spaced about 3550' (1082m) apart, beneath Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. Two previous rock stations have been completed, one of which had a crown pilot tunnel excavated to explore geologic conditions that would be encountered during the station excavation. This pilot tunnel was primarily for inspection by bidders and design was based on core hole information. The other rock station had no pilot tunnel and was also designed on the basis of core hole information. The three rock station areas, which are the subject of this paper, have been explored by crown pilot tunnels and an as-built report, with geologic maps and sections, has been prepared, for use by the design engineer as the basis of design for support of the structures. The geotechnical report describes the geologic structure in detail and relates it to excavation and support of the three crown pilot tunnels and the running tunnels which will be enlarged to create the 58'W x 44'H x 700'(+)L (17.6m x 13.3m x 212m +) stations. The information was complete enough to permit the design engineer to visualize the geologic structure and compute loads for the various types of rock conditions. It was therefore possible to determine the size and spacing of the steel sets for the several different conditions of rock structure encountered in the pilot tunnels.

The source and transport regions of fluidised (transported) breccias outcrop in the Cloncurry Fe-oxide-Cu-Au district, providing insights into the origins of other fluidised magmatic-hydrothermal breccias such as kimberlites. Discordant dikes and pipes with rounded clasts of metasedimentary calc-silicate rocks and minor felsic and mafic intrusions extend several kilometres upwards and outwards from the contact aureole of the 1530 Ma Williams Batholith into overlying schists and amphibolites. The brecciation initiated at depths >10 km and may have resulted in surface breaching. We used analytical equations for particle transport to estimate clast velocities (eÆ 20 ms-1), approaching volcanic ejecta rates (up to 80 ms-1). The wide range of CO2 fluid inclusion densities (up to 150 MPa), the localisation of the base of the breccias in contact aureoles, and the scale and discordancy of the bodies suggests the breccia transport process was triggered by an abrupt release of overpressured fluid. At these depths, such extreme behaviour may have been achieved by release of dissolved fluids from crystallising magma, in combination with a strongly fractured and fluid-laden source, sitting under a strong, low permeability barrier, and such parameters may be analogous to the asthenosphere/lithosphere boundary in the case of kimberlite initiation. The relationship of these breccias to the Ernest Henry iron-oxide-Cu-Au deposit suggests they may have been either fertile or æfailedÆ orebody feeders.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The British Geological Survey's regional geochemical database is used to identify the patterns associated with the various mineral deposit types and to examine the extent to which their distribution reflects the presence of long-lived metallogenic provinces in the crust. Image analysis provides new insights into the setting of the mineralisation, geochemical constraints on tectonic models of Caledonide evolution and evidence for terrane amalgamation and large-scale processes. There is evidence that much of the mineralisation reflects the presence of long-lived provinces with a distinctive geochemistry reflecting their origins as zones of crustal extension. In the case of the Middle-Upper Dalradiam sedex deposits, the relationship between geochemistry and tectonic setting is direct. In other cases, rocks deposited in extensional zones appear to have acted as reservoirs of ore-forming elements which were further concentrated during later events
