A knowledge of airway friction factor (K-factor) is necessary to designing mine ventilation systems for least cost and optimum effectiveness. The friction factor used must be accurate and reliable to estimate correctly roadway resistances and pressure sources for required flows. Though the resistance to flow offered by mine airways has been an object of study over the last half century, no accurate relation has yet been established from which the prediction of the resistance of a projected airway can be made. In Kentucky, only limited and incomplete data on local K-factors are available. Therefore, there is a need for field investigations to determine these values in-situ for existing mining conditions. The author describes a study concerning K-factor that was carried out in ten coal mines, located in eastern and western Kentucky. The results of these investigations are presented in both tabular and graphical form.

Canada's gypsum industry began over two hundred years ago in the Maritime Provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's ten provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.38 million tonnes of crude gypsum and seventeen processing plants manufactured 2.49 million tonnes of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production, however, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum poses a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

This paper describes the laboratory study which permitted an exploration of high grinding ball consumption in the secondary open circuit wet grinding mills at the Sidbec-Normines plant, Port Cartier, Québec. Corrosion undoubtedly exists but is of minor importance. Abrasion resulting from the physical nature of the company's iron concentrate is the main reason for the high ball wear. It was found that at least 30% reduction in ball consumption is possible by decreasing attrition grinding through the use of lifters in the mill. At the industrial level this would entail more lifters and/or higher lifters in the mill linings.

Mineralization features at the Bajo La Alumbrera porphyry copper-gold deposit are discussed as they affect gold leaching and copper flotation behavior. Alteration-mineralization geological blocks are assigned in the zoned body, and each required its own geostatistical model. They extend horizontally outward from potassic to the phyllic-propylitic boundary, vertically from surface down to 300 meters, and include oxide, secondary enriched, and hypogene mineralization. Copper and gold values are calculated geostatistically from assays and all available geologic-mineralogic information. Reserves are classified for each geologic block and for each open-pit bench into leach or float ore according to metal grades, geologic characteristics, and supergene-hypogene relations. Finally ore extraction behaviour is briefly described, grouping gold and copper reserves into metallurgical families.

RADON EXPOSURE AND CARCINOGENIC CELL TRANSFORMATION The highest radiation burden to miners is due to inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products. The quantification of the risk associated with this radiation burden is complicated by modeldependent lung dosimetry, insufficient accuracy of past human exposure data as well as lacking knowledge about potential synergism of various carcinogens. Nevertheless, it is evident from epidemiological studies of miners that inhalation of elevated levels of radon daughters is correlated with increased lung cancer incidence (UNSCEAR, 1977). The situation is further complicated by the lack of reliable data on the biological variability of the latency period for the development of lung tumor under varying exposure conditions. At present information on variation with age is scarce, however, it is indicated that the excess lung cancer rate for workers exposed to high radon levels is considerably higher, if exposure occurs at ages over 40 years as compared to under 30 years of age (Sevc, Kunz, Placek, 1976). Furthermore, latency period is shorter by 6 - 7 years for smokers exposed to elevated radon levels than for non-smokers (Fry, 1976). Analysis of US- and CSR-uranium miner data revealed that the mean latency period is in the order of about 15 years (Jacobi, 1973). These uncertainties, together with medical diagnostic shortcomings, lead to the dissatisfying situation that at present the detection of radon induced injury of mining personal is primarily the assessment of the endpoint, i.e. radiation induced cancerous transformation of lung cells with typically less than 10% chance for recovery. Therefore it would be advantageous to develop practically applicable diagnostic aids to indicate already early precancerogenic changes of cell characteristics. This would permit the identification of specific population groups at increased risk for the development of lung cancer, thereby increasing the chances of more successful medical treatment. Despite continuous improvements in the reliability of test methods for the diagnosis of cancer cells there is still need for techniques, which enable the detection of transformed cells before the onset of invasion of the host organism. It is generally recognized that the transformation of a cell into a malignant state leads to a change of the cell surface, indicating a correlation between membrane-specific immunological properties and loss of growth control. Surface alterations on cells appear to be responsible in part for the malignant state and are not simply secondary effects of the transformation (Schnebli and Burger, 1973). Furthermore, membranes of cancer cells differ significantly from those of normal cells, particularly, in permeability properties (Rastogi, 1976). In dying cells, proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, aminoacids and their breakdown products are released, which block the permeation of the membrane itself. A mammalian cell can be considered as a 3-phase system (interior, boundary, environment) with the membrane forming a heterogeneous barrier between two subsystems. Under normal circumstances a difference of chemical potential is maintained on both sides of the membrane, causing an ion gradient across and fixed surface charges on the membrane. This results in a membrane resting potential (MRP) between cytoplasm and the bulk medium. It has been shown that MRP is a highly sensitive indicator for cellular reactions due to physical, chemical and biological agents, particularly whenever phenomena of transport and ion gradients as well as permeability are involved (Redmann, 1980). The primary interaction of the agent "ionizing radiation" with any form of living matter occurs at the cellular level. The component with the highest hit probability is the cell membrane. In the study presented MRP-changes of human cells were investigated with simultaneous measurements during irradiation and post-irradiation intervals up to six days. Furthermore, the suitability of MRP-measurements of human cells was tested as an indicator for early changes of cellular properties prior to the histological confirmation of carcinogenic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lung cells The biological specimen used were cultured human lung cells and human lung biopsy samples. Monolayers of lung fibroblasts (W138) were grown in petridishes using conventional culture techniques. In addition, transformed lung cells (W138SV13, subline 2RA) were used applying similar culture methods. All petridishes were incubated at 37°C and only cells in logarithmic growth phase were used. Freshly excised lung biopsy samples were obtained from randomly selected male and female patients (20 cases), where suspected or unclear malignancies were indicated by clinical or X-ray observations. At the time of sampling 80 % of the patients were or had been smokers in the past. The samples were taken by means of a stiff bronchoscope introduced into the trachea under local anasthesia with 1 % Novesinsolution (preparation with Atropin and Pantopen). This permitted the observation of both main bronchi down to the segmental bronchials. From each patient two tissue samples were excised from the mucusepithelial layer under visual control with fiber optics and transferred immediately into 1 % NaClsolution. The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) is a computer simulation language that has been used for simulations of open pit haulage operations since the 60's. It is easy to learn, simple to use, and has a block-diagram structure that is amenable to load-haul systems. However, due to its lack of flexibility, there are situations where another language should be chosen. This paper reviews the characteristics and capabilities of both GPSS and FORTFAN with regard to open pit shovel and truck simulation. The relative advantages and disadvantages are highlighted and a case study presented along with comparative results from two computer models (one written in GPSS and the other written in FORTRAN).

Four native copper ores, two conglomerate and two amygdaloidal, were tested to determine their amenability to sorting. One of them, a conglomerate ore from the Kingston mine, showed a high sortability as evidenced by an 80 pct recovery of copper in the minus 6-, plus 1/2-inch size range. Using the Kingston as a case example, the cost of mining and concentrating was estimated for a standard case and five optional cases involving varying degrees of sorting. This analysis indi¬cates that the production cost per pound of copper can be reduced on the order of 1 to 1-1/2 cents per pound along with a significant decrease in capital investment.

Technologic advances in materials utilization during the past two decades have brought is a long way toward the point where we can make the products we need from the materials we have readily available. Notable examples are the synthesis of diamond, zeolites, quartz crystal, mullite, and mica, and the development of phosphate bonded tale. Two of these--zeolites and mullite--involve the use of clays. There is little reason to doubt that equally important advances will be realized in the next decade, and that clays will play an important role in the developing materials technology. Indeed, the stage is already set for many of them. This discussion is concerned primarily with the high quality, relatively high priced clays, kaolin, bentonite, fuller's earth and ball clay. The first three have enjoyed demand growth rates over the past two decades which on the average exceeded the growth rate for the economy as a whole. There are indications that demand for ball clay will be growing at a faster rate in the future.

Variations in flotation rate by particle size and specific gravity have been investigated for three different bituminous coals. The flotation rates for various components were determined by separating the products of bulk flotation into size-specific gravity fractions. The effects of feed size and reagent addition on the flotation response of individual size-specific gravity fractions were evaluated.

Cobalt-sulfide mineralization can he found in potentially economic quantities where permeable, basal Cambrian formations "pinchout" against Precambrian pal eotopographi c highs. These environments are common around the Saint Francois Mountains of southeastern Missouri and they share many similarities with the geologic environments of Zambia and Zaire in South Africa. Exploration for this type of deposit involves test drilling targets identified by trend analysis from past drilling, geophysics, geochemistry and a comprehensisve study of regional geology and isopach maps. Innovative ideas, new exploration concepts and insoluble residue geochemical methods may provide the necessary "edge" needed to complement basic geologic understanding leading to ore discovery.

"Kaolinite is a dioctahedral aluminosilicate widely used as paper filler and coating pigment. At the best of our knowledge, kaolinite is not widely used in polymer industry. Therefore, in this study, the flame retardant effect of kaolinite in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and polypropylene (PP) were studied and compared with an alumina trihydrate (ATH) and Talc. Cone calorimeter results shows that the weight percentage of ATH in EVA/ATH composites must be at least 50 wt. % in order to reach an improvement in fire retardancy in terms of pHRR. In the case of EVA/kaolinite, even with 35 wt. % the pHRR is largely reduced. Comparing PP/Talc and PP/kaolinite composites at 30 wt. %, both fillers leads to same reduction in pHRR with a slightly better performance for PP/kaolinite composites. In both cases an intumescent behavior of kaolinite composites was observed that could slow the rate of the rising degradation products, allowing radical recombination reactions. Also, it was observed that kaolinite forms a protective layer on the surface of the samples, which could insulate the material. These behaviors (intumescence and formation of a protective barrier) could reduce the transfer of the degradation products to the flame and explain the better performance of kaolinite composites. INTRODUCTION The use of mineral fillers as fire retardants in polymer matrix are well known and widely studied [1]–[10]. Aluminum and magnesium hydroxides (respectively ATH and MDH) are the most widely used inorganic fire retardants. To achieve fire retardancy with these mineral fillers, about 50-60% loading is required which decrease the physical properties of the composites. The fire behavior of composite EVA has been the subject of many studies [4], [7], [9]–[15]. EVA copolymers are commonly used in the cable industry, due to their high ductility, even at high loading rates. In such applications, the flame retardant systems should be introduced into the polymer to improve the fire reaction. Many flame retardant systems have been tested but the most used industrially relates to formulations based on hydrated mineral fillers (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide). Their low cost and reduced fumes generation explains their success. However, to obtain good performance with this type of flame retardants, it is necessary to incorporate high levels (up to 65 wt %), which severely impact other properties such as processability and mechanical behavior. The main modes of action of these flame retardants are the dilution of the gas phase, the endothermic decomposition and a barrier effect created by the inorganic oxide residue which may be improved by the incorporation of other components such as montmorillonites, silicas or talcs."

The Mine safety and Health Administration (MSHA) formed the Mine Ventilation Bleeder and Gob Training Committee in 1993. This committee was charged with developing a training course designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of practical bleeder ventilation systems. The course will probably include a discussion on the theory behind bleeder system design, an in-depth look at the strengths and weaknesses of the basic bleeder system types, case studies, and a review of the systems currently in use. A database on active underground bituminous coal mines, gob areas, and the bleeder systems presently used was developed from questionnaires distributed to nine Coal Mine Safety and Health (CMS&H) districts. Representative systems were selected for thorough investigation to develop case studies. This paper introduces some of the material to be included in the course, including a description of basic bleeder system designs, a review of a portion of the database, and facts about the gob areas and bleeder systems investigated for the development of case studies.

"Rapid population growth and scarcity of space have led many developed cities to bury supply facilities. In line with this, utility tunnels have been employed in Korea since the 1970s. However, approximately 70% of structures were installed more than 20 years ago, in response to the issue of ageing, tunnel enlargement has been proposed. The aim of this study is to investigate geo-mechanical behavior due to tunnel enlargement. Tunnel enlargement methods have been researched to suggest a optimal method. A finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate ground behavior by the expansion of internal space. Vertical displacement and settlement trough width are investigated according to ground stiffness and different enlargement size. It was determined that displacement is affected by the enlargement size and ground stiffness. Based on the deformation results obtained from the numerical analysis, it is possible to predict ground behavior and stability upon tunnel enlargement. INTRODUCTION Various infrastructures such as electric lines, communication lines, gas pipes, and water pipes are jointly accommodated by utility tunnels. These utility tunnels improve the aesthetics of urban areas and help ensure stable supply. The first utility tunnel in Korea was adopted in 1978 and new tunnels are still being installed with the development of new suburb cities. Nevertheless, about 70% of the utility tunnels were installed over 20 years ago and they are still being used through ongoing repair. Moreover, 90% of utility tunnels were installed before 1995. With aging of the nation’s utility tunnels various problems such as concrete deterioration and scarcity of capacity have arisen. As solution, reconstruction has been considered. Reconstruction can enlarge space and improve the performance by replacing existing structures. For reconstruction, two routes have been proposed: underground excavation and cut and cover. In order to avoid traffic problems caused by road occupation and civil appeals during construction projects, underground excavation is the more attractive option. Tunnel enlargement methods have been classified (Seo et al., 2008; An et al 2013) and major considerations during tunnel enlargement have been outlined (Beak et al., 2007). Enlargement construction cases on road tunnels around the world were introduced (Kim et al., 2012) and the deformation curve during tunnel expansion was proposed to investigate the range of protection that should be offered (Kim et al., 2008; Beak et al., 2011). However, tunnel enlargement technology is limited to road tunnels and railway tunnels. Hence, a study on shallow box tunnel enlargement is required for practical application."

The use of polysilicates for treating heavy metals in soils and mining sludges is discussed. Results of the treatment are given for soil contaminated in a metal scrap yard operation and for copper mining processing sludges. The types of metals of concern are arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, cadmium, and zinc. The application of the treatment is predicated on the mixture and relative concentrations of the metals as well as the material matrix. Reductions in soluble concentrations (STLC or TCLP) of one to two orders of magnitude can be achieved with relatively small additions of silicates and cementitious materials.

Deep tillage is used widely as a Means of alleviating excessive soil compaction. There has been some concern that the voids created by deep tillage may collapse before a more natural soil structure develops, resulting in recompaction subsequent to deep tillage. A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of pneumatically injecting organic material into the voids during deep tillage to prevent any significant recompaction from occurring. Various amendments were injected into the soil in the laboratory using a small-scale ripping and injection system. Measurements were made of selected soil properties to evaluate the feasibility of this method.

Kennecott Corporation, in joint venture with Galactic Resources Ltd., recently began operation of an open pit gold mining and milling facility near Columbia, South Carolina. The deposit consists of two ore bodies (North and South deposits) hosted in deformed and altered meta-volcanics and meta-sediments of the Carolina Slate Belt. This paper describes the rock mechanics and engineering geology investigations conducted for design of interim, ultimate and final reclamation slopes for the South Pit. Emphasis includes the successful use of drill core orientation techniques to confirm complex geologic structure at depth; the development of a three-dimensional rock mass competency model, incorporating surface mapping data, results of bench mapping documentation, field index testing and laboratory testing; and kinematic assessments for design of optimum slopes.

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ (or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m). processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

This paper presents the development of ultrasonic grinding technology for material and mineral processing. The principles underlying this new technology, as well as their implementation in two laboratory scale devices are described in detail. Ultrasonic grinding experiment results are discussed with respect to operating variables and the achieved product sizes. Special attention has been given to the electrical energy consumption of the grinder, and an attempt to compare its efficiency with tumbling mills has been made. A mechanical system capable of measuring the specific grinding energy is also described.

To most of you present here the word "refractories" is not new and you are familiar with the materials and use. To many people though the question is asked, "What are refractoriness and what are they used for?" Refractories are non-metallic products which are so resistant too melting at very high temperatures that they can be used for building or lining furnaces of all kinds. A large variation occurs in the size, form, and composition depending on the service for which they are intended. They are made from a wide variety of raw materials, of which fire clay and quartzite are used in largest quantities. Other refractory raw materials include magnesite, chrome, diaspore, bauxite, kyanite, sillimanite, olivine, zircon, and many others. Most of these are assembled from-widely-'separated points in the United States while others come from the far corners of the earth. Chrome is imported from the Philippines and South Africa, and, to a lesser extent, Turkey and Greece Kyanite and sillimanite come: from India and bauxite from the Guianas. And there's "magnesite from brines," produced in chemical plant's by treatment of sea water or inland deep-well brines with hydrated lime. The proportion of magnesia available in sea water is so small, less than one pound from 500 pounds of water,, that millions of gallons must be pumped and processed each day in a sea water magnesite plant. The realm of refractory raw materials, therefore, is very extensive and continues to grow because of the endeavor to find-better raw materials from which to produce better products for refractory service.
