Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of copper sulfide dump ores. On solutions were analyzed for metals, organics, and chloride, and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese, and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution, with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Toxicity to bacterial species was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50 -60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different SX reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost effective and the least toxic.

The presence of moderate to high concentrations of colloidal clays in coal preparation plant waters can cause serious operating and economic problems for a coal company. Among the host of possible problems are the following: 1) Poor separation of clays in the plant thickener, resulting in: a) Increased ash in the clean coal. b) Increased specific gravity of the wash water and decreased coal recoveries at the desired quality. c) Increased thickener operating costs in trying to overcome the problem. 2) Decreased solid concentrations in the thickener underflow and increased pumping requirements to meet solids withdrawal requirements.

The responses of calcite, feldspar, and quartz minerals In a laboratory free fall electrostatic separator, before and after tribocharging with stainless steel, PVC, and copper plates, have been investigated. The effect of H3BO3 and BaCl2 chemicals pre-treatment on the electrical properties of the minerals is examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed with the determined charge, dielectric constant, and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. Electrical properties of the minerals and their responses to the electrical field during separation, after tribocharging and chemical pre-treatment, are explored for the need to characterize the electrical behaviour of the minerals.

The spherical agglomeration process provides an attractive method for the cleaning and recovery of fine coals in the form of compact oil-bonded pellets. In treating a washery effluent containing 50% minus 20 micron material by this technique, the slurry was first mixed under vigorous agitation with oil to deash and dewater the fine coal. The flocculated coal pulp was then formed into larger agglomerates on a modified balling disc. The operation of a semi-pilot scale process is described and an analysis of some of the operating and system variables is given. A semi-theoretical expression to predict the final agglomerate size under various conditions is derived and compared with the experimental data. Coal producers are faced with a growing requirement to clean and recover fine mesh coals. Greater mechanization of the extractive and preparation processes has resulted in finer-sized products containing larger quantities of associated foreign matter and preparation plant effluents contain quantities of fine coals which are potentially valuable. These losses will probably increase with the expansion of production and will require the development of effective disposal and utilization processes under pressure of the lack of adequate disposal areas, the enforcement of air and stream pollution laws, and the economic need to obtain the maximum yield of salable product(1)

Diasporic bauxite from the Mugla-Milas region was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for different activation times and the structural changes were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area analysis (BET ? Burnauer, Emmett and Teller). Non-activated and activated bauxite samples were leached directly in alkaline (Na2O) solution at atmospheric conditions and the activation procedure led to the amorphization and structural disordering of the diasporic bauxite structure, which increased the dissolution efficiency. Effects of milling speed, liquid/bauxite ratio and leaching time on alumina extraction in direct alkaline leaching of diasporic bauxite were also studied. A cooperative study was undertaken by representatives of the environmental community, the mining industry, and state government to identify and resolve environmental issues associated with base and precious metal mining in a neutral atmosphere before a commercial mining development is announced. The study included testing Minnesota's as-yet-untried non-ferrous mining regulatory program using three hypothetical mining developments sited in environ-mentally sensitive areas where future mining could occur. Results include identification of critical paths for regulatory decision making, identification of particularly sensitive environ-mental issues that will need continued deliberation before resolution, and characterization of data necessary for environmental review and permitting decisions.

The U.S. Bureau of nines evaluated the potential availability of tungsten from 57 tungsten mines and deposits in 19 market economy countries (1). The 38 properties that were producing at the time this study was performed contain approximately 375,000 tons1 of W03 (tungsten trioxide). The total estimated recoverable resource from all properties studied, both producers and nonproducers, was 1.2 million tons W03 (demonstrated level). Approximately 143,000 tons of W03 is recoverable from producing properties with costs at or below the January 1983 market prices. The study indicates that by 1990 production from currently operating mines in market economy countries will decrease as their demonstrated resources become exhausted. Some of this potential decline may be offset by lower than anticipated levels of market demand, discoveries of additional resources at producing mines, development of other known deposits, and/or discoveries of new deposits. Development of new tungsten resources in market economy countries will likely result in costs higher than exist at currently producing properties. The People's Republic of China has been steadily increasing production and export of tungsten in various form and currently supplies about 25 pct of U.S. imports. China's tungsten mines are large, high-grade operations capable of producing at relatively low cost. These factors, coupled with China's apparent need for foreign exchange, could lead to further expansions of production and exports from China, with a consequent increased dependence by market economy countries on China for tungsten requirements and a threat to the survival of the market economy countries' tungsten industries.

The study investigates noise-induced hearing loss among miners in underground coal mines in Turkey, considering factors like occupation, age, and exposure time. The research employs logistic regression analysis to reveal the relationship between hearing loss and these factors. The findings suggest that occupational groups and duration of noise exposure significantly affect hearing loss. Miners in production groups and those exposed to noise for 10-14 years have a higher risk. The study concludes that age does not significantly increase the probability of hearing loss.

This paper is one of a series of presentations organized by the Conference of American Society of Civil Engineers with the goal of making significant progress toward an equitable and effective allocation of risks in construction undertakings among the principal parties - owner, contractor and designer. The role I have been assigned is principally one of identification of risk while others will devote greater attention to the allocation of these risks and the contractual arrangements necessary to properly make these allocations. Construction projects are joint undertakings by parties who bring different skills and interests toward a common effort, much as this conference does. A project is not an adversary proceeding and does not benefit from establishment of an adversary mode, as our lawyer friends seek in the resolution of legal issues. Accordingly, I urge upon this Conference the adoption of two basic precepts and guidelines as the criteria for sharing of the risks inherent in construction undertakings toward achievement through mutual effort the common goal of a successful project completed in the shortest time and at the least overall cost. These precepts are: (1) that all risks are rightfully the owners unless transferred to or assumed by another party for a fair compensation; and (2) that the principle guideline in determining whether a risk should be so transferred should be whether the receiving party has both the competence to fairly assess the risk and the expertise necessary to control or minimize it. The sponsors of the conference have provided certain guidelines to the authors. There is, however, no constraint in expressing one's bias and I suspect that my contractor's outlook may be inherent in my comments. The guidelines have suggested that I indicate whether the risks identified are ones that can or should be shared or borne by one party alone. In doing so, I will attempt to follow the precepts I have recommended.

This research project demonstrates the application of a mine system simulation and animation model in enhancing the efficiency of a truck-shovel operation and reducing the haulage environmental impact in an open-cut coal mine. In any mine, a key objective is to have enough equipment for production and not have excess to where it is counterproductive. Due to the advent of responsible mining, environmental regulations, and eco-friendly practices, these factors must also be considered in the analysis. The over-trucked situation at a mine will be discussed, i.e. when the number of trucks exceeds the optimum number of trucks a mine should have for the most productive/profitable mining operation. When the system has an excess number of trucks, truck utilization is reduced which impacts mine operation, capital costs and the environment, through unnecessary truck purchase, energy use, air pollution etc. A hypothetical surface coal mine layout was used for the simulation model.

At that time the Institute of Silicates was established is Moscow and later the establishment of similar more specialized institutes for the study of cement, glass, refractories, construction ceramics, electrical ceramics, building materials and asbestos provided the necessary research facilities for studies related to all types of ceramic inorganic materials. The' Institute of Ceramics and the Institute of Silicate Chemistry, Academy of Sciences, USSR, were founded in Leningrad. The work now going on in these various research' institutes covers every branch of silicate science and ceramics The impetus behind such establishment of special¬ized laboratories is no doubt due to the 5-year plans and the necessity of improving the scientific knowledge regarding the materials being used and the products being manufactured.

Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades and increased operating and construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a result, the 1.7-2.8 m3 (60-100 cu ft) flotation machine of the 1950's and 1960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines. The result has been improved flotation machine specific capacity (tph processed per sq ft of floor space); specific power (hp per tph processed); and process control simplicity. The recent development and satisfactory plant evaluation of the 28 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine allows economic and operating advantages in high tonnage mill applications. Some principles of mechanically induced air flotation and the development of the large 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine are reviewed here. Performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores-copper, zinc, and iron-is also given and recently completed plant results provided. Mining lower grade ore bodies results in the need to process increased tonnage in the concentrator. This greater tonnage requires more individual flotation machines, unless individual machine capacity, or cell volume, is increased. As the ore processing rate of the concentrator increases, the benefits of progressively larger individual cells in the flotation section become more significant. The accompanying figure illustrates the advantages of a larger flotation machine. In the figure, the number of machines in the rougher-scavenger section is related to the plant tonnage for three sizes of flotation machine: 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft), 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft), 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft). The 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine results in 95 fewer machines, compared to the 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft) machine at 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) feed. The flotation cell reduction is, of course, doubled at a plant production rate of 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Using fewer flotation machines saves floor space. The 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft) and the 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) machines result in a floor area reduction, relative to the 8.5 (300 cu ft) machine requirements, of 134.7 and 418.1 m2 (1450 and 4500 sq ft), respectively, for the 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) rate and 269.4 and 836.1 m2 (2900 and 9000 sq ft), respectively, for the 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd) rate. In addition, flotation practice has shown that the "specific power intensity"-power per unit cell volume-is less for increased cell size. This results in a power draw reduction, for the rougher-scavenger circuit, of between 552 and 686 kW (740 and 920 hp) for the 14.2 and 28.3 m3 (500 and 1000 cu ft) machines, respectively, when processing 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Fewer cells improve machine control and simplify maintenance needs while reducing floor space and power requirements. These are tangible incentives for the development of large flotation machines for high tonnage applications. Flotation Principles The accompanying figure shows how key hydrodynamic regions influence the performance of a mechanically induced air flotation machine. Air is induced into the fluid from the top of the cell, due to the mechanical action of a rotating impeller. The impeller circulates the liquid, or pulp, from the bottom of the cell. The result of these dual flow paths is the mixing of the two fluids and one solid phase in the highly agitated region where physical contact between the air bubbles, and the solid particles to be floated, is accomplished. "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently developed a series of models utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations. CFD models utilizing Species Transport Model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The CFD models were calibrated and validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. These models identified relatively high gassy areas around the continuous miner which may not warrant their use in coal mines with medium to high methane liberation rates. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, and the validation of the models based on experimental data.INTRODUCTION Methane gas and respirable dust are two hazards frequently encountered at continuous miner (CM) operations. An accumulation of both methane gas and coal dust may lead to massive explosions underground [1], and overexposure to respirable coal dust can result in pneumoconiosis (commonly referred to as “Black Lung Disease”) in coal workers [2]. Current U.S. federal coal mine regulations limit concentrations of methane gas to below 1% at the face area and require exposures to respirable coal dust to be at or less than 2.0 mg/m3 for an 8 h shift average. Begin on August 1, 2016; the overall respirable dust standard in coal mines is reduced from 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3 for full shift sampling. If the quartz content of the dust exceeds 5% by weight, the dust standard becomes more stringent, reducing the allowable concentration to the value of 10 divided by the % quartz."

Between 1996 and 1999, a high-performance Robbins TBM [235-282] excavated a 5 mile long, 23´2? wide, and ~700´ deep tunnel through the subsurface of southwestern Queens. Low penetration rates (~6´/hr [actual] vs. ~9´/hr [anticipated])resulted from changed rock mass conditions mostly attributable to high-grade metamorphism of the rocks. Over a three-year period, as-built circumferential geologic mapping (scale 1?=10´) and digital imagery of the tunnel, fracture and fault analysis, structural, lithologic, and petrographic studies have shown that the rocks of the Queens Tunnel consist of orthogneiss of mesocratic, leucocratic, and mafic composition. These metaigneous rocks developed coarse-grained fabrics during Grenvillian (~1.0 Ga) granulite facies metamorphism, and retained their nearly anhydrous, poorly foliated character during subsequent high-grade Ordoviciande formation. Lacking a penetrative foliation, the coarse granoblastic rock texture and extraordinary garnet content (up to 50% in some zones) together proved animpediment to efficient chip production and resulted in bimodal production of blocks and excessive fines. TBM excavation of the Queens Tunnel was also hindered by geological conditions that included unexpected lithology and rock fabric orientation, a zone of crosscutting hypabyssal rhyodacite dikes, and unanticipated extent of brittle faults. The dikes and brittle faults produced blocky ground conditions and a collapsing face condition that produced cutter damage and decreased utilization. Such fundamental textural, mineralogic, and lithologic control over hard-rock TBM penetration can be predicted by careful pre-bid geological analysis. To determine the causes of lower than anticipated TBM performance, a detailed investigation was carried out that included analysis of operational data from the TBM data logger and an extensive laboratory test program on cores retrieved from tunnel walls. Integrated laboratory testing included punch, point load, tensile strength, Cerchar abrasivity, and linear cutting tests, independent petrographic analysis and machine performance analysis. These allied investigations have provided quantification that the rock mass exhibited an unusually high degree of toughness and rock directional properties and established geological causes for decreased TBM penetration rates.

"In this study, the interaction between magnetite and the additive olivine was studied after oxidation as well as after isothermal reduction at temperatures in the 500º-1,300º C range. In the olivine sample, the forsteritic olivine particles react partly during the oxidation pretreatment to form magnesioferrite and vitreous silica along the particle corona. This breakdown of the olivine particles during oxidation liberates magnesium from the particles, which do not react until temperatures of above 1,150° C in reducing atmosphere. When the hematite in the sample is reduced, and when the temperature is high enough to allow solid-state diffusion at ~800º C, the magnesium of the magnesioferrite redistributes, so that the magnesium concentration approaches the same level throughout the iron oxide structure. For magnetite, this did not occur until 800° C. At 1,000° C, this magnesium reacts further with the silica in the glassy slag phase, which crystallizes into fayalitic olivine. At this temperature, the magnesium has diffused over distances of more than 600 µm from large olivine particles after 2 hrs reduction. From this point, the primary slag phase in the pellet, until melting, is solid fayalite. Upon reduction to metal, the metallization front concentrates the MgO in the remaining wustite, which can lead to MgO levels of up to 10 mole% locally. The melting point of the fayalite is raised from 1,145º C to a melting range of 1,238-1,264º C due to the MgO increase, as estimated based on phase diagrams, which were adapted to the pellets tested. Much of the olivine that remained unaltered in the oxidation process will be encapsulated by iron before the particles begin to dissolve in reducing conditions and, therefore, plays no role in the reduction before final melting of the particles occurs.IntroductionEnvironmental concerns have placed increasing pressure on the CO2-intensive iron and steel industries to further optimize operation toward higher productivity and more efficient use of reducing agents. At the same time, high demand for iron ore has caused new iron ores with lower grades and more complex chemistries to be taken into production. In Scandinavia, the main iron-bearing material is magnetite-based pellets with olivine, which allow operation with very low slag volumes and, hence, lower fuel rate ( Slagnes and Sundqvist Ökvist, 2008; Hallin et al., 1994). Both the MgO and SiO2 of the olivine, as well as the elements of the gangue of the ore, i.e., Si, Mg, Ca, Al and alkali, interact with the iron oxides to give the finished pellet product its final properties in the blast furnace. Tailoring the additive mix to be used for a certain iron ore for optimal product properties, therefore, requires detailed knowledge of the mechanisms by which these elements dissolve and react in the pellet."

Australian underground coal mines predominately use the longwall method for coal extraction. In longwall mining at least two parallel roadways known as gateroads are mined to delineate the sides of the longwall block, a longwall installation face is then driven connecting the gateroads to enable the longwall mining equipment to be installed. Roadway development should ideally be ahead of the longwall so that the longwall equipment can be installed into the newly developed panel with minimal delay to coal production. A discrete event model of roadway development can help assess how a particular configuration may perform with high levels of variability and uncertainty in operations. One of the major delays associated with roadway development is caused by the shuttle car due to its cyclic stop-start nature. Shuttle car travelling paths and machine interactions are normally constraint by the mine?s roadway layout and mine safety issues. This paper presents simulations of shuttle car route options which can be considered at the design stage to minimize the cycle time of a shuttle car as part of a general roadway development simulation model developed using 3D Flexsim.

The response of feldspar flotation to tallow diamine dioleate collector in the presence of sulfuric acid is studied using batch flotation experiments. Application of this non-hydrofluoric acid (non-HF) reagent system in the flotation of mineralogically and chemically different feldspar ores is compared with that of the conventional hydrofluoric acid system. The dependence of flotation recovery and concentrate grade on feed particle size distribution, conditioning time, pulp density, and pH, combined variation of collector and acid addition rates, sodium hydroxide concentration in the collector solution, and initial pulp pH prior to conditioning is studied. The results have been discussed in relation to applicability of the non-HF system to plant trials, and the nature of the collector adsorption in the selective flotation of feldspar.

One of the prime objectives of the mine industry is to develop a low cost way to clean up what has been called "The Rape Of Mother Nature". The project falls under the broad umbrella of reclamation, which is now considered an essential part of the mining cycle. As such, it is being given full consideration in the initial planning of all surface operations. In most areas, if a proposed mining system does not lend itself to proper reclamation, it is not an acceptable system. By combining mining and reclamation plans, a producer not only can minimize reclamation costs, but can also restore the land to usefulness and insure continuing profits after a deposit is depleted. As long as fifteen years ago, many of the larger mining companies were already deeply involved in this extra cost work. Even then the involved companies were projecting a great need for a bigger bulldozer, Bigger than anything commercially available. At that time, the D9 tractor weighed about 60,000# bare weight.

This paper presents a methodology for long-range studies of petroleum supply, to meet projected demands, that involves modifications of procedures used previously. This paper continues a series of papers on this general topic in the AIME, the most elaborate recent one being that by Warren Davis given in February 1958. The procedures considered here begin with the assumption that the governmental framework of regulations and taxes remains fixed- but that price changes. After .these procedures have been reviewed, the effects of changing certain governmental controls, will be considered in order to judge their potential effects on future supply. This is an essential step because controls cannot be expected to' remain static in a situation changing as much as the petroleum. industry and because such changes are within-the scope of alternative ways of adjusting to impending problems. The first procedure begins with: a) trends in drilling success, b) relation between field income from oil and gas and footage drilled, c) declines in capacity from production, d) trends in capacity of new and producing wells, e) all monetary values are in constant 1958 dollars, and f) target amounts of domestic crude petroleum production. 'From these components projections are obtained of: 1) numbers of future producing wells required, 2) footage drilled, 3) new wells drilled, 4) crude oil found, 5) capacity of producing wells, 6) completion costs, 7) finding costs, 8) production costs, and 9) average wellhead crude oil price consistent with the footage-field income relationship.
