Some technical developments of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program which are of general application in geochemical exploration are being studied. Results of stream water and suspended and bottom sediment analyses are compared for an area near Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Variations of uranium content of water samples with time in the North Carolina Piedmont are seen to correlate with rainfall. Ground water samples from coastal and piedmont areas were analyzed for helium. All media sampled provide useful information when properly analyzed and interpreted as part of a total geological analysis of an area.

In the mathematical analysis of electrical networks, the electrical devices are often modeled using idealized network elements such as current sources, voltage sources, and resistors. An analogous approach is outlined here for the modeling of mine ventilation networks, which can be considered nonlinear resistive networks. The modeling technique proposed uses five basic (non-reducible) elements: the H element, the Q element, the D element, the R element, and the N element. These elements are characterized by their (a) pressure gain or loss, (b) air quantity, and (c) pressure-versus-quantity relationship, each of which may be known or unknown. In addition to the definition of the basic elements, the necessary conditions for which there exists a unique solution are discussed. This is performed using theoretical developments derived from electrical circuit theory and illustrated in example networks. The proposed procedures are useful in the solution and characterization of mine ventilation networks.

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

The Hutti Greenstone belt, located in the northern side of Dharwar Craton, India, contains several promising gold fields. It is predominantly composed of meta-volcanics with minor intercalations of meta-sedimentaries. Alkali-SiO2 and Zr-P2O5 diagrams, immobile element trends, and an iron-rich trend on the AFM diagram indicate that the volcanic suite is low-potassium tholeiitic basalt. The lower Mg number, MgO-TiO2, MgO-Ni, and Ni-Zr plots reveal that the basalt was derived from a fractionated, highly evolved magma generated by 10-20% melting of the mantle at 1100°C and 5 kb pressure. The chemical variations suggest that the Hutti metabasalt represents volcanic arc rocks generated at a converging plate margin.

Reagent control for optimum concentrate yield was studied by laboratory batch flotation tests simulating the Groveland plant flotation circuit in which a rougher concentrate is cleaned twice. The reagents were a fatty acid collector, a sulphonate collector and sulphuric acid. The study included two types of flotation feed representative of the reground and deslimed tailing from the spiral concentration circuit, one when the ore mineral is predominantly specularite and the other when it is magnetite. The factorial design included three levels of fatty acid, five levels of sulphonate and five levels of H2S04, with the two types of ore in nested blocks, making up a total of 75 tests. Similarity of results and reproducibility were established in preliminary tests. The final tests were performed in random order under closely controlled conditions following the established procedure.

A risk-based strategy was developed by Rio Tinto to manage its air quality impacts on a global scale. The strategy consists of three objectives ? improving air quality performance, developing industry leading practices and engaging and influencing in air issues. This paper discusses three major successes achieved this approach. Firstly, how air shed resources are managed in constrained air sheds. Secondly, how financial modelling is used to value air quality constraints, and thirdly, how a rigorous and comprehensive e-learning course is used to improve the overall level of air management knowledge of Rio Tinto?s environment managers.

As noted by McKinstry (1948), "How to deal with erratic high samples is one of the knottiest problems in ore estimation." He described a variety of approaches and methods to alleviate the problem through the averaging and weighing of assay data and by "cutting" or "clipping" of the erratic assays. Bird (1991) elaborated on ways of dealing with the nugget effect (erratics). He listed several procedures for cutting. Bird's list has been reproduced and/or added to by several authors including Vallee (1992) and Stone and Dunn (1993). Missing from each of these otherwise excellent reviews is a definition, description or guideline to recognition of an "erratic," or just where or when cutting is warranted or justified.

Deposits of ferromanganese crust containing cobalt and nickel occur on the seafloor in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. This paper describes developmental flotation metallurgy to separate crust from its associated substrate gangue. Important variables in ferromanganese crust flotation include reagent type, aeration rate, conditioning time and agitation intensity, pH, temperature, water type, and feed size distribution. Flotation in seawater of minus 600 ~m (-28 mesh) material assaying 6.2% Mn, 0.2% Co, and 0.13% Ni with diesel fuel-crude tall oil-sulfonate collectors produces concentrates assaying 15% Mn, 0.6% Co, and 0.3% Ni with recoveries of 89-95% while removing 62% of the feed weight.

The Raman spectroscopic technique was used to study electrochernically oxidized pyrite in-situ. It was found that Raman-active sulfur oxidation products could be detected after a proper potential was applied to the pyrite electrode for a threshold period of time. There existed a minimum potential below which sulfur could not be observed. However, when the applied potential exceeded a certain limit, the intensity of the sulfur spectra decreased. The minimum potential at which sulfur could be observed changed with solution pH. For both acid (pH 2.7) and weak alkaline (pH 9.2) solutions, the minimum potential was 0.8 V/SCE, whereas for neutral (pH 6.5) solutions the value was 0.4 V/SCE. In strong alkaline solutions (pH 12.5) surface sulfur oxidation products could not be detected at any potential.

A 1 t/d continuous elution pilot plan is being operated by General Mining at their Grootvlei Gold Mine using the technology developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories. Flowsheet design and plant erection was carried out by Van Eck & Lurie and completed in December 1989. Following the conclusion of six test runs designed to optimise reagent additions, it was shown that elution efficiencies of 98-99% could be achieved using reagent additions as· low as 16 kg/ton of carbon NaCN and 28 kg/ton NaOH while consistently producing eluted carbon containing less than 50 g/t gold. Significant savings were indicated when compared and power were indicated when com­pared with the traditional batch AARL, Zadra and Micron alcohol elution procedures.

The term sustainable development shortly appeared in international use in the run of UNO Environmental Protection Conference held in Rio de Janeim in 1992, bears the concept, that evolution process ( associated either with a region or society) should provide mutual interests concern in three aspects - environmental, economic and social ones, admitting as well the fact , that environmental protection should become an integral part of each process and cannot be regarded separately. In this connection it seems quite reasonable to employ the principal of sustainable development, while creating the model of industrial mastering the territory constraint lands viewing their future, for a example, in rich mineral deposit's development. In Kuznetsk coal basin in Russia ( west Siberia) the development of a big coal deposit Erunakovsky is now being underway. The major part of coal will be mined with open cast method, resulting the number of local environmental adverse impacts' occurrence. In such a situation mastering of sustainable development model is given the top priority, demonstrating the essential result of its application in a form of possibility to define the best correlation between economically expedient and environmentally tolerable loads during coal mining. The given paper is an attempt to work out the main principals to approach the creation of sustainable development model in regard of the definite region case. To simplify the presentation of employed approach's main idea, the given below accepts as its component only one of many actually existing environmental profiles, that define mining pro- cess impact on environmental situation -the size of infringed (de- graded) lithosphere surface. Basically, the actually existed correlation between spheres. grounding the model of sustainable development - economic, environmental and social- is given in a form of nomogram under Fig.1. The plant data were collected from three streams around a dense medium drum for coarse coal cleaning operated at various volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed. The effect of the volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed (MF) and particle sizes on the performance criteria, g50 and Ep, of the dense medium drum. These measured data were adjusted and calculated for the yields and balanced relative density distributions by mass balanced method based on the statistic principle. These balanced data were then used to formulate the mathematical models of the separation distribution curves for the various feed size intervals. The correlation equations for the g50 and Ep as the function of inverse of the feed size, and MF and total throughput were established. A numerical algorithm utilizing the Secant method, based on the root searching principle, was developed for yield optimization and simulation of dense medium drum separation to improve the separation efficiency and hence the product yield. The relationships between the direct ash content and relative density of the particles in feed and the products were established and incorporated into the numerical algorithm for predicting the product quality.

Test work indicated and plant operation has since confirmed that SAG milling is a viable option for INCO's Sudbury Operation milling rationalization project only if pebble crushing is included in the SAG/ball mill circuit. Throughput increases more than fifty percent with pebble crushing incorporated into the comminution process. The finer product of high speed pebble crushing provides further energy savings. The unconventional approach of pumping the pebble crusher product, while simplifying plant layout, has produced challenging wear problems.

A 1989 FIPR characterization study of the future phosphate resources in Florida showed that MgO would be a problem with both the pebble and concentrate as phosphate mining moves deeper. Since the ratio of concentrate to pebble will become higher and higher in the future, reducing Mg content in the concentrate by a small margin would allow blending of a large portion of the high-dolomite pebble. This research was conducted based on that logic. The following six approaches were tested for reducing MgO content in the flotation concentrate: (1) Adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step; (2) Dolomite flotation on the rougher concentrate with and without grinding; (3) Dolomite flotation on the cleaner concentrate with and without grinding; (4) Scrubbing the flotation feed; (5) Scrubbing the rougher concentrate; (6) Scrubbing the cleaner concentrate. Successful methods include adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation, dolomite flotation on the cleaner concentrate with grinding, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These techniques could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20-40%. The flotation process could achieve a concentrate with the lowest MgO content, but it is the most expensive approach. Adding a dolomite is inexpensive and easy, but the effect is limited. Overall, scrubbing may be the most promising technology for this purpose.
