Diesel fuel usage in the mining industry continues to escalate. This is because approximately 60 percent of all mined materials are surface extracted by large equipment using diesel fuel, which continues to increase in cost per gallon. For example, coal mining uses large equipment such as wheel loaders, wheel dozers, draglines and [ ] dredgers. In one year, three of the largest U.S. coal mining operations consumed approximately 567 million to 852 million L (150 million to 225 million gal) of diesel. At an approximate cost average of $3.25/gal the expenditure on diesel is $487 million to $731 million per year. So, are there any solutions that could reduce this cost burden? Yes, there are. Coal mining companies can extract less ore; use more efficient extracting equipment that consumes less fuel; wait for a significant reduction in the cost of fuel; or find and use technology that would create efficiencies that would lower the cost. Nanotechnology is one such technology that might provide the means to create the efficiencies that will significantly lower diesel fuel costs.

Precious metals are commonly believed to be recovered along with sulfide minerals in flotation, but a few neutron activation analyses showed that the recoveries of gold and silver were unexpectedly low. Recoveries of platinum group metals remained unresolved due to interferences in the analyses. Electron micro-probe, scanning electron microscope and scanning auger microprobe analyses have identified nickel arsenide minerals in the ore and confirmed a close association of platinum group metals with the arsenide minerals as minute inclusions. These results indicated a need for re-evaluation of flotation procedures which have so far ignored special problems related to arsenide minerals. The electrochemical and flotation behaviors of nickel arsenide and their implications to the flotation recovery of arsenide minerals from copper-nickel bearing Duluth gabbro are presented.

Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. Chain pillar design formula under weak roof condition was developed by statistically analyzing the results from the three dimensional finite element parametric analyses. The parameters such as mechanical properties of the roof and floor strata, overburden depth, panel width and length, and coal strength were incorporated in the formula. A conversion formula which transfers a rectangular chain pillar into a square chain pillar of equal strength is proposed. The influence of high in-situ horizontal stresses, which are often encountered in the coalfield, on chain pillar stability is also discussed.

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960's, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan's growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.' As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada's output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. The national Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system, it is necessary to know when the material has developed a compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi), the early threshold for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings at this value, the material has developed enough strength to be self-supporting and to allow for installation of other ground support components that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on site in the first six hours after application using a partial beam test standard, a STM C 116-90 (1990). These advances were demonstrated in tests with five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. Measuring the early strength properties of shotcrete directly at the mine site can improve mine safety by identifying appropriate re-entry times and providing a convenient means of conducting on site quality control during shotcrete applications.

"INTRODUCTION As one of the most pressing and important political debates of this century, climate change has captured global attention and is forcing governments to take action towards decreasing GHG and carbon emission levels below what was previously thought to be necessary. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery powered A/C systems and diesel-fired heaters, going no-idle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, stand-alone mobile equipment HVAC. THE HISTORY OF GHGS AND CLIMATE CHANGE In 1896 Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960’s Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Figure 1). In 1988 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgement of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of over 2500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries, and because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998 requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5% from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States)."

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia's underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for more than 20 years. Mortality from coal workers' pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in X-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among U.S. coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above noted differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not illuminate the issue. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. If quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of pneumoconiosis in the United States, more effective dust control measures, as well as an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, should be implemented to reduce this potentially disabling condition.

The application of digitization to operations and logistics is commonplace. From advanced data analytics to intelligent networks, digitization offers tremendous opportunities to create value, raise the efficiency of production processes, and reduce emissions. Several manufacturing industries have already implemented solutions to good effect by using digitization. Mining companies, for example, are using historical data about equipment health to predict potential failures, while aeronautics and automotive companies are using robotics and end-to-end digital twins to improve their design and production processes. Not surprisingly, first adopters of digitization in many industries have gained an edge over their competition. The cement and aggregate industry can better manage the enormous energy consumption, rising cost challenges, inefficient uses of raw material, logistic problems, emissions, and overall process complexity that are inherent in their operations by doing the same. This paper presents the results of a literature review and analysis and conveys the challenges for adaptation and implementation of digitization and artificial intelligence (AI) in the cement and aggregate production industry.

Planning and estimating progress rates and costs for tunnelling is always best done based on experience and historic precedent. Much precedent is available but the use of data monitoring, data mining and other retrieval techniques on modern TBM machines can enable this to be further expanded and refined. Advance rates can be related much more closely to rock types as can associated rock bolt and mesh/ shotcrete requirements. This in turn can lead to a further refinement in best likely combinations of equipment, such as shotcrete jumbos, better selected for the anticipated conditions, rather than the potential advance rates of the machine. Efficient and timely construction of the tunnel will also be linked to times needed for finishing work, such as contact and void grouting and to how this can be initiated while the TBM is still in operation, in order to save overall construction time. Indeed, this in turn may affect the most preferable layout and construction details of the permanent tunnel. Considerable experience has been gained in the use of two large diameter TBM tunnel drives through the Himalayas at the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project in Pakistan. All the above aspects will be discussed in the paper based on the considerable experience and data which came from that operation, including appropriate measures in highly stressed areas potentially subject to rock burst.

The Bureau of Mines devised a column flotation technique using either fine or coarse bubbles and compared it with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a 44.7-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrate with 87-pct recovery, compared with 43.8- and 43.5-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrates with 85- and 77-pct recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse-and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5-pct-Cr203 with 95-pct recovery, exceeding conventional flotation which produced 35.6-pct-Cr203-grade concentrates with 87-pct recovery.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicrometer size range and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicrometer size range. As dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using an impactor-type size selector such as the DPM impactor (DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) are an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents the results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device and, eventually, a reduction of its effective particle cut size, but when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions of this study, the effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal at the end of the study period. IntroductionSubmicrometer-sized particles are increasingly recognized as significant respiratory health hazards (Cantrell and Watts, 1997; Kenny, Gussman and Meyer, 2000; Ristovski et al., 2012). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicrometer particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittelson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Relative to other occupational groups, underground miners can have some of the highest DPM exposures due to their work in confined spaces where large diesel equipment is used (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as soot, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007; Birch, 2016)."

The combined study of ground water regime and rock deformations has resulted in the theoretical substantiation of the common principles for analysis of the hydrodynamic and geomechanical processes Within the scope of unique scientific direction -hydrogeomechanics (Mironenko and Shestakov, 1974). The hydrogeomechanical models are widely used now for the analysis and forecasting the extremely important processes connected with the safe and efficient mining operations, as well as with the protection of geological medium. Among these processes are: -deformations of the open-pit slopes and spoil dumps; -consolidation of rocks due to the ground-water pressure drop; -water-end-rock material inrush into mine workings caused by deformations of the undermined rock mass; -geodynamical processes due to the changes in ground water regime; -artificial hydrofracturing in rocks; -transformations of clay linings under the tailing ponds and other technical water basins.

The mineral sands industry is oriented primarily toward the supply of titanium (Ti) raw materials (titanium feedstocks) for the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment and titanium metal. Titanium minerals ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene, and titanium slag and synthetic rutile are all used principally as feedstocks for the production of white TiO2 pigment. It accounts for almost 90 percent of the world?s consumption of titanium minerals. The remainder is used for the production of titanium metal, fluxes for welding rods and as a metallurgical flux in iron and steel making. Titanium dioxide pigment is produced by two alternative process routes, the sulfate process or chloride process. The bulk of the world?s titanium dioxide is derived from the mineral ilmenite, which also contains iron oxide and other minor impurities. At some mining operations, the iron present in ilmenite is removed (ilmenite beneficiation) to produce a high TiO2 feedstock (slag or synthetic rutile) typically containing between 80 percent and 95 percent TiO2. Pigment producers then further process it to produce pigment.

As a result of the enactment of the Federal. Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 1, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) has been carrying out research in the "field of coal mine health". The National Institute (formerly Bureau) for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was designated the agency within HEW to be responsible for such research activities. One of the early programs sponsored by NIOSH was undertaken by Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard University School of Public Health participating as a subcontractor to Eastern. This program on Coal Mine Respiratory Protective Devices, which started on June 30, 1970, had five major objectives as follows: a. to determine current status of respirator usage with respect to duration and frequency, types. and maintenance b. to determine acceptability ( and reasons therefor) of currently used units c. to determine protection factors provided by respirators worn by working miners d. to make recommendations on ways to improve existing units, or on research needed to develop new types of respiratory protective devices for coal miners e. to provide recommendations to mine management on more effective use of respiratory protective devices

Approximately 40 concentrators throughout the world have successfully adopted computer control for flotation circuit operation since 1969. Successful use of flotation control, gaining up to 2% efficiencies, has largely derived from effective employment of on-stream slurry analyzers and integration of key measurement data through digital processors. Requirements for reliable measurement have also led to improved functional reliability in magnetic flow meters, pH, reagent feed, and other key elements. Methods used in computer control of flotation will be reviewed and variations in operating philosophies will be described with reference to the approaches taken to flotation automation.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service port construction, transshipment and environmental control. The major problem is the transshipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and/or new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. The present report reviews progress in slurry transportation research which has been done in Japan since the 1960s when large scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are discussed.

Due to the current cost and availability of crude oil in Brazil, Samarco Mineracao S. A., as part of its program of quality and productivity optimization and reduction of operating costs, has undertaken tests to utilize alternate energy sources for fuel oil used in its pelletizing plant at Point Ubu, Espirito Santo, Brazil. The energy program undertaken by Samarco consists of two basic steps. The first step was to reduce energy consumption, that is, to improve the thermal efficiency of the process. Secondly, a program was started to substitute the fuel oil with coal.

High-risk area in open-pit mining should always be monitored by the operational supervisor because of its nature. One of this type is the soft soil dump area. Due to the unstable bearing capacity of the soil, it’s highly possible for us to find cracks in the area. This paper aims to build computer vision which able to detect truck’s distance from safe limit allowed during dumping activity. The system will warn the truck’s driver if the truck has crossed that predetermined safe limit.

At the Kakogawa works of Kobe Steel. Ltd., the agglomeration facilities are composed of a pelletizing plant and sintering plant. This aim is to utilize raw materials efficiently and stabilize the raw material resources. Therefore at Kakogawa works, the blast furnaces (BF) have been operated with high pellet ratio and various developments for pellet properties have been achieved to improve the blast furnace performance. These developments include dolomite-fluxed pellets, new-porous pellets and crushed pellets. As a results of these improvements, pellets have achieved almost the same performance as sinter at high temperature regarding properties such as the softening, melting and reduction behaviour. However, some problems on shape have remained to be solved. Spherical pellets flow easily into the center of the furnace and form mixed layers of pellets and cokes. Therefore, in BF operations with these pellets it becomes more difficult to keep proper and stable gas distribution.
