"Constructed between 1939 and 1945, the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct is 45 miles (72 km) long. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) first identified suspected areas of leakage from the RWBT in the 1990s. A $1 billion project is underway to mitigate the leakage through the construction of a bypass tunnel around the area of most severe deterioration, a 2.5-mile (4 km) section located beneath the Hudson River. Two shafts, 800 and 900 feet (244 and 274 m) below the ground surface, are being sunk to support the tunnel construction. The deep shafts will be subjected to high groundwater pressures and have been designed to accommodate multiple tunnel portals. This paper discusses the engineering decisions and analyses leading up to the final design. INTRODUCTION Project Background The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) provides over 1 billion gallons (3.7 billion liters) of water to over 9 million residents of the City of New York and surrounding communities each day. This water is stored in upstate reservoirs and conveyed to the City via a system of aqueducts and tunnels. Water is delivered to the City almost completely by gravity and consists of three systems: the Croton, the Catskill, and the Delaware. The Delaware System is the largest of the three and supplies between 50% and 70% of the City’s daily water supply. In the 1990s, the NYCDEP discovered leaks in the central 45-mile-long (72 km) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct known as the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT). The leaks release between 15 and 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million liters per day) and are concentrated in two areas near Wawarsing and Roseton, New York. As part of the Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel and Wawarsing Repairs Project (Bypass Tunnel Project), the leaks in the Wawarsing area will be repaired by grouting from inside the existing RWBT, and the leaks in the Roseton area will be mitigated by constructing a bypass tunnel parallel to and 1,750 feet (533 m) north of the leaking portion of the existing RWBT. Two deep shafts will be excavated on either side of the Hudson River: Shaft 5B in Newburgh and Shaft 6B in the Town of Wappinger."

In this paper, an innovative approach was adopted to automatically calculate the effects of tunnel induced settlement on buildings and utilities. The approach resulted in increased output quality, consistency, reduced time, cost savings and a greater ability to respond quickly to design changes. The techniques described have been applied to the Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System project, located within the City of Toronto. The automation allowed a very large area of topography, tunnels (6 km), buildings (9000) and utilities (over 1000) to be rapidly evaluated. Visualization of the settlements and impacts also allowed the project design team to optimize the system design to mitigate the settlement impacts.

A number of parameters involved in the use of ozone; such as the sequence and the conditioning time of ozone treatment, the pulp pH, and the level of xanthate addition, were investigated.

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While many efforts have been made with the aim of understanding the mass-based concentrations and silica contents of respirable dusts under a variety of mining conditions, little research has been completed in characterizing dust at the individual particle level (by composition, size and shape). This study employed scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) to analyze dust samples collected from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. The results indicated that particle characteristics can vary widely between locations, though many trends might be explained based on knowledge of mining conditions. A continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) was also used during the collection of some samples to determine respirable dust concentrations, which were compared against estimated concentrations based on the particle-level analysis.

It is undoubtedly true. In preparation for this presentation, 193 organizations were asked to describe their mining research efforts. 60% responded, The meaning of "research" was taken in several different ways. The continual efforts of progressive companies to improve themselves were reported as research. We will call this and any effort to solve specific and immediate problems "practical research". The continuing investigation of subjects of long range interest will be called "basic research".

The stability of spoil and highwall slopes are important to successful strip mining. This paper discusses soil parameters of importance in stability analysis. The common mechanisms of spoil failure are discussed. Modes of highwall failure are also outlined. The importance of water to stability is presented. Dragline mining methods most suited to creating spoil and highwall profiles that address stability needs are provided. It is concluded that groundwater and surface runoff must be well controlled, and that it will often be necessary to modify spoil and highwall configurations to achieve a stable overall slope angle.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations), even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of possible explosion pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mine seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble, in combination with a conventional mine seal, so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed and attenuated, and the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a “passive mine blast attenuator” (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals.

Blast induced damage to the final wall of rockmass in any civil or engineering application is a major concern to the rock excavation engineers. There are at least four distinct techniques practised by blasting engineers to minimise the damage to the parent rock during blasting that are classified as contour blasting. One of the methods to achieve a smooth wall or rock surface in blasting is pre-splitting, where blastholes in the final row are mildly loaded with explosives and fired first in sequence before the rest of the holes in a round of blast to achieve a split in rockmass. Since blasting is one of the most adopted methods for achieving a final wall in a desired shape, while maintaining the rockmass integrity, the design of pre-split blast assumes importance. There are several variables that determine the final shape of the pre-split face including the rock type, the drill diameter, the explosive characteristics, the orientation of major joints with respect to drill hole, the linear charge density, the spacing of drill holes and inclination of the drill holes. This study attempts to determine the importance and sensitivity of variables in pre-split blasting using historical data from open excavations of a hydroelectric project in India. Keeping in view the multitude of variables, low correlation of independent variables with responses and high level of interactions between the variables that define the blast results, it was found suitable to use ANN to determine the importance and sensitivity of the variables involved. A new method to determine the blast induced damage to rockmass, namely, undamaged area (AUD%), is introduced. Half Cast Factor (HCF%) and AUD%were calculated for a high wall and trenches by digital image analysis technique using the Fragalyst software. Joint spacing and linear charge density emerged as most controlling variables in determining the final result of pre-blast. The relative importance of other variables assuming significance in the case of both the designed outputs is also discussed. A comparative analysis of HCF%and AUD%on the basis of results obtained from ANN analysis is also presented. A futuristic approach concept has also been introduced.

When the Middle Ages were drawing to an end and Rotterdam, then still a small fishing port, began to extend its trade relations to continental ports handling general cargo, a development was initiated which was to give Rotterdam a predominant position in maritime traffic in Europe 300 years later. Despite many setbacks and the silting up of the mouths of the Rhine and Meuse rivers, the port experienced a new rise towards the end of the previous century after the dunes at Hook of Holland had been cut through as planned by Dutch engineer Caland. With its favourable location in the mouth area of the Rhine and a hinterland opened up by waterways it was merely a matter of the city council pursuing a far-sighted policy to make the best of these natural advantages. Thus new port installations were erected on the southern bank of the Meuse in the first quarter of this century, which were expanded in the course of the subsequent decades. The New Waterway became the main artery for industrial enterprises, in particular oil industries, which sprang up along its banks (picture 1). Whereas 30 years ago Rotterdam's Waalhaven, with its new jettees for general cargo and mainly bulk goods, was still one of the most modern terminals, the growing size of ships, which increased by leaps and bounds for tankers, in particular towards the end of the 'fifties, necessitated much larger harbour facilities built further and further towards deep water.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated the use of seismic refraction tomography (SRT) for identifying changes in pillar loading at the Foidel Creek coal mine near Steamboat Springs, CO. The inherent three-dimensional problem of directly imaging coal pillar conditions is reduced to a single plane by considering only the load transmitted from the pillar to the adjacent floor rock. Floor strata velocity tomograms (at two pillar locations) illustrate that loading conditions are non-uniform and non-unique. Also, time sequence monitoring, as the longwall face advanced, demonstrated that SRT can be used to image spatial changes in loading conditions. SRT offers the mining engineer a simple and flexible technique for evaluating pillar conditions, and thus, both present and alternative mine designs.

To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. Abstract. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as part of its effort to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, is conducting research on the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica. A system of crushers, screens, and zigzag air classifiers is used to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica ore and from the waste tailings of abandoned mica operations. The plus 0.21-millimeter-size mica is effectively recovered by this method. The mica concentrates produced contain over 90 percent mica. The method recovered up to 78 percent of the mica in the samples. As a dry concentration method, the pneumatic-beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas of limited water resource.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaire called the Saturn and conducted a laboratory study using a Fletcher High Dual-boom Mast Feed (HDDR) roof bolting machine. The Saturn luminaire was designed to (1) enhance floor illumination to enable better detection of trip hazards in the interior spaces of a roof bolter and (2) reduce glare that has typically been an issue of concern on roof bolters. This paper reports on the results of achieving the second objective. The existing roof bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared with three versions of the Saturn luminaire relative to light intensity (100%, 75%, and 50%). Discomfort and disability glare data were obtained from 30 participants that comprised three age groups. Discomfort glare perceptions were obtained using the De Boer rating scale, and disability glare was quantified by using Mars Letter Contrast Sensitivity tests. Discomfort glare was reduced at least 3 levels with all Saturn versions. Also, a predictive model was used to estimate discomfort glare, and the results were similar. Disability glare was the least for the Saturn’s 50% intensity, and all Saturn versions had significantly less disability glare than with the baseline lighting. Veiling luminance was calculated and used as another indicator of disability glare. Veiling luminance was 28 to 42 times greater with the baseline lighting as compared with that of the Saturn lighting. Lastly, visibility levels were calculated. The Saturn versions were 4 to 6.5 times better in terms of visibility level.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel crossing beneath Burrard Inlet is an important component of the Greater Vancouver Water District’s plans to increase seismic resilience and meet increasing water demands. The project included the 110-meterdeep (350 ft) South TBM Receival Shaft, one of the deepest shafts to date in the sedimentary rock unit underlying much of Metro Vancouver. The shaft encountered varied sedimentary rock types, including fractured rock, with accompanying high groundwater inflows. This paper discusses the design and construction challenges associated with this shaft and the necessary means to complete the shaft in time for TBM arrival.

The Colorado portion of the Rio Grande rift is clearly defined physiographically from the south in the San Luis valley northward to the latitude of Leadville where sediments of the Dry Union Formation (Tweto, 1961) accumulated within the subsiding rift zone. To the north of Leadville is a system of faults active in the late Tertiary, including the Mosquito fault that offset a portion of the Climax mineralization (Wallace et al., 1968). Tweto (197B) describes remnants of Dry Union Formation against the Mosquito fault north of Dillon in the Blue River valley, so it is apparent that the rift and associated sediments extended well to the north of Leadville. Kelley (1952, 1954, 1956) and Chapin (1971) have noted in New Mexico that the Rio Grande rift is a series of en echelon basins, offset to the east, with constrictions connecting them (Fig. 1). In Colorado the structural basins are offset to the west. The net effect of all the rift zone basins in New Mexico and Colorado is an arcuate pattern (Fig. 1) abutting the Colorado Plateau and Sari Juan Volcanic Province on the west. The width of the rift system gradually decreases northward to about Leadville where rift definition is not apparent.

The mineral deposits found in carbonate facies rocks of sedimentary basins include deposits comprised of the country rock itself such as limestone for chemical uses, dolomite for road aggregate, and a variety of other industrial uses of the sedimentary rock. Exploration for new reserves is generally conducted on basis of outcrop investigation, subsurface drilling, and facies change studies while geophysics and geochemistry are not applied. In contrast, rapid development has taken place in the application of both geophysical and geochemical techniques in exploration for stratiform deposits of zinc, lead, barite, and fluorite deposits. This paper will present case histories and show illustrations from such work in the Mid-Continent region. The Metals Division of International Oil & Gas, Inc. has gathered this experience through work over the last three years along the southern margin of the Eastern Interior platform focusing on the states of Arkansas and Tennessee. The exploration work was conducted partially for the Company's own account, partially in joint exploration ventures with mining companies including International Mogul Mines, Ltd., a Canadian company; Bear Creek Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation; the Mining Division of W. R. Grace and Company, and Boliden-Preussag Exploration, a Swedish-German partnership. As we are all well aware, the demand for coal is increasing very rapidly. This makes the coal industry one of great opportunity for both the miner and the-supplier. Up until the middle 1960's, the price of coal had been one of the most stable of all commodities for the proceeding fifty years. In somewhat oversimplified terms this was because the inflationary tendencies had been offset by improved mine techniques and more efficient, more productive, and more reliable equipment; but, in the last seven years the price of coal has doubled. It is not the intent of this paper to discuss the many reasons for this price increase, but to show how the cost of hauling coal can be sharply decreased with a new truck concept. Not long ago a mining executive stated that all haulage trucks now available are basically the same. They look the same; they cost about the same; they have the same engine, power train, and tires; and, they have about the same operating cost. Truck size has increased which has reduced the number of drivers, but the purchase price and maintenance and repair costs have increased proportionally. Pits must be widened and loading shovels enlarged, out, all this has not reduced the cost of moving coal. Another executive said that he saw no advantage in buying new trucks because his people now know how to maintain and operate the ones they presently have. They have all the right spare parts along with a good maintenance program. Most replaceable parts of the trucks now in operation have been replaced and improved at least once and the trucks are now running better than when they were new. Besides, the trucks are no pretty well written off.

Lidding over or tunneling existing transportation infrastructure is currently under review in several U.S. cities. The main reasons for this are the use of the created space for urban development, the reduction of noise and exhaust fumes for the residents, and, thus, a significant increase in the quality of life. The main aspects to be considered during the planning process are (1) total investment and operational costs, (2) impact of construction works on current traffic, (3) safety and fire protection, and (4) socio-environmental issues. The paper presents some basic planning principles, and experiences of recent urban highway coverages are shared.
