Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An in vitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold (which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14% within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%) throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

Tar sand deposits in the. Stare of Utah contain more than 25 billion barrels of in-place bitumen, Although thirty times smaller than the well-known Athabasca tar sands, Utah tar sands do represent a significant domestic energy resource comparable to the national crude oil reserves (31.3 billion barrels), The term "tar sand" refers to a consolidated mixture of bitumen and sand, Based upon a detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties of both the bitumen and the sand, a hot-water extraction process for Utah tar sands is currently being developed in our laboratories at the University of Utah. This process involves intense agitation of the tar sand in a hot caustic solution and subsequent separation of the bitumen by a modified froth flotation technique., Experimental results indicated that, for a given tar sand sample, percent solids and caustic concentration were the two most important variables controlling the performance of the digestion stage, These variables were identified by means of an experimental, factorial design, in which coefficients of separation greater than 0.90 were realized. Although preliminary in nature, the experimental evidence gathered in this investigation seems to indicate that a hot-water extraction process for Utah tar sands would allow for the efficient utilization of this important energy resource.

Although laboratory studies of tin flotation have been reported as far back as the 1920`s(1), the commercial application has only been realized within the past few years(2,3). The principal technical difficulty in the application of the process to tin ores has not been in the flotation of cassiterite itself, this mineral being readily recoverable with the common collectors, including xanthates with heavy metal ion activation(2). The difficulty has been with the depression of the gangue minerals commonly associated with tin ores, and to a lesser extent with the problems of collector consuming semi-colloidal minerals which are in some cases present. The application of sulfosuccinamate collectors to flotation of cassiterite from the Catavi, Bolivia, slime tailings has recently been described(3). The investigation which led to this successful process development included studies of other samples of gravity plant tailings as well as of lode tin ores. A common flowsheet with few significant variations was applied to most of these ore samples with acceptable results. In the following the process is described and the results of its application to samples from Bolivia and elsewhere given. Among the factors considered are: gangue depression, particle size and slime effects, and reagent and pulp density levels.

A continuous on-line particle size analysis system for solid/liquid suspensions is described. The basic sensor utilizes a centrifugal principle to separate particles according to size, the resultant separation being measured by means of beta-ray attenuation. Results obtained when analyzing a variety of materials at sizes from 65 mesh (210 microns) to 20 microns are discussed in de- tail. Accuracies better than 2% are demonstrated. The effects of particle specific gravity, and mixtures of materials of diverse specific gravities, are discussed from a practical and theoretical viewpoint. It is demonstrated that particle specific gravity has a minimal effect on the size reading obtained. This renders the instrument suitable for handling materials where the ratio of light to heavy component may change. The design of the first commercial installation of this instrument is described in detail. This installation will be capable of analyzing three streams in sequence, measurement at three particle sizes being effected on each stream.

Slope failures very commonly occur during a long period of heavy rainfall and groundwater rise. The failures pose a substantial risk to people, infrastructure, and equipment downslope. In the recent past, the mining industry has faced an increase in tailings dam failure due to several reasons including pore pressure increases in the dams. Many failures have been observed to occur during times of water level fluctuations but the critical factors that influence the initiation of slope failures still need to be adequately clarified. To investigate these factors, laboratory experiments were conducted on model sandy slopes to determine pore pressure-induced slope failure initiation. This study also presents a method to examine water seepage through soil slopes using an ultraviolet (UV) dye and a UV flashlight. The small-scale model test simulation demonstrated failures induced by either water percolation from the upslope tank at a constant level or by raising the water level at intervals. A bottom chamber fully filled with water to replicate groundwater rise was also simulated. The soil slope was monitored at every stage to study the deformations and behavior until failure occurred. Results gathered from the controlled laboratory conditions were useful for the verification of the numerical modeling method created in the computer program Slide. The analysis showed that slope failure always occurred when the toe was fully saturated. High pore pressures and seepage forces reduce the shear force at the toe to almost zero causing it to slide. A comparison of slope height to water level also indicated an average of 96% water level to cause a failure. At this point, the soil slope is fully saturated and has no matric suction. The findings in this study show that, by monitoring the moisture content of slopes, failures can be predicted.

"This paper analyzes mine emergency management and rescue practices in German underground coal mines and compares them to those used in the United States. The German mining industry has developed these practices over more than 100 years, and they have successfully managed numerous fire, water inundation and ground control emergencies using these techniques. The authors interviewed German mine emergency professionals about rescue team and emergency operations. These operations were then analyzed to determine which of these German principles would be of interest to United States mine rescue teams. Implementing these programs into United States mine rescue and emergency operations was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Coal mining has become much safer industry than it has been in the past. Advances in safety and health regulations and company polices have improved working conditions for miners all over the world. Even with these advances there is still a need for continued attention to safety and health. It is also important for mine safety professionals to observe practices and procedures in other countries and cultures and learn what and how to apply this knowledge in their own systems. Coal mine rescue has been an integral part in improving coal mine safety. Mine rescue procedures have evolved with time, experience and technology development. Today, coal mine rescue teams are still needed and must be continually trained and prepared for any mine emergency. Although it is hoped that improved mine safety policies and practices will eliminate coal mine disasters in the future, accidents remind us that disasters can still happen today. In May 2014, Turkey experienced a severe coal mine disaster where 301 people were killed [G.Tuysuz, 2014]. Our industry must learn from these incidents, focusing on disaster prevention and making improvements in mine rescue operations. Mine rescue procedures differ from country to country due different regulatory environments and different historical evolution of emergency response. Sharing practices and procedures from one country to another enables learning from different experiences and cultural backgrounds. Sharing is also a way of preserving information, identifying and learning best practices."

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural-stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10 to 25.95 percent. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone’s physical-mechanical properties, such as uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity were determined to be more than 70 percent. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81 percent risk of hand-arm vibration. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural-stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

"Phosphate rock contains traces of rare earth elements (REEs) and can be a secondary source of these critical materials as large tonnages of phosphate rock are mined annually. Attention has mostly focused on the extraction of REEs from phosphogypsum, which contains more than 70 percent of the REEs reporting to phosphate concentrate, with only limited work conducted on REE extraction from sand tailings and slime even though they account for 16 percent and 15 percent, respectively, of REEs mined with phosphate matrix.In this work, phosphate flotation tailings were upgraded by gravity separation and froth flotation. Gravity separation was conducted using a laboratory shaking table, while flotation was conducted in a Denver D-12 flotation cell. The concentrated tailings were then leached by nitric acid followed by REE extraction with solvent and ion-exchange resin.The sand tailings were assayed as having 2.6 percent phosphate (P2O5 ) and 198.1 µg/g REEs. It was found that the shaking table could produce tailing concentrate assayed as having 8.6 percent P2O5 and 616 µg/g REEs but with only 20 percent REE recovery, while the froth flotation produced froth concentrate assayed as having 8.1 percent P2O5 and 368.2 µg/g REEs with 63.5 percent REE recovery. Leaching the flotation concentrate with 5.2 M (25 percent) nitric acid followed by extraction with solvent and ion-exchange resin yielded precipitates with REE contents of 0.926 and 0.314 percent, respectively, compared with 0.716 and 0.213 percent when table concentrate was used.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) consist of a group of 17 elements: the 15 lanthanides along with yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc). They are rare not because of their scarcity in the Earth’s crust but because they are rarely found in economic and mineable deposits. REEs are called “seeds of technology” because of their importance to some critical technological industries such as renewable energy, hybrid cars, electronics and batteries. On average, an electric car or a hybrid car contains about 10 kg of REEs (Grasso, 2012; Radhika et al., 2011).REEs are usually categorized into light (LREE) and heavy (HREE). LREEs consist of lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), promethium (Pr), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd) and scandium (Sc), while HREEs consist of terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), lutetium (Lu) and yttrium (Y). About 200 minerals contain traces of REEs, but only three are considered economically significant: bastnasite, with the formula La,Ce(CO3)F; monazite, with the formula(Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4; and xenotime, with the formulaYPO4 (Jordens, Cheng and Waters, 2013)."

Diesel-powered equipment is widely used in the underground mining industry and their popularity results from properties including efficiency, versatility, reliability, and durability. In the U.S. approximately 7,700 diesel engines were used in 177 underground metal and nonmetal mines as of 2005 [MSHA 2005], and these numbers have likely increased since that time. Diesel engines have been shown to be a major contributor to submicron carbonaceous, respirable, and total particulate mass in the air of underground metal mines [Zielinska et al. 2002, McDonald et al. 2003], and their extensive use results in approximately 13,000 underground metal/nonmetal (M/NM) miners (MSHA 2005) in the U.S. being potentially exposed to aerosols and gases emitted by diesel engines (MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006). Exposure to diesel exhaust has been linked to adverse health outcomes including cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases (Attfield et al. 2012, Silverman et al. 2012), and in 2012 diesel exhaust was categorized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 human carcinogen (IARC 2012). Exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) is especially concerning for underground miners since underground mine environments have been shown to have some of the highest levels of diesel exhaust in the U.S. (EPA 2002, MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006, Pronk et al. 2009). Due to the potential for elevated DPM concentrations in mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule to limit exposures of metal/ nonmetal underground miners to DPM to an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA) of 160 μg/m3 total carbon (TC) (MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006, MSHA 2008). Since this rule went into effect, DPM exposures have been reduced, but are still elevated when compared to other occupations (Pronk et al. 2009, Noll et al. 2015). MSHA compliance data between 2005 to the present show that underground blasters represent 21% of all DPM overexposures in M/NM mines and are one of the highest exposed professions in mining often resulting from low ventilation in the area where blasters are working. Because mines have difficulty controlling DPM in these low ventilation areas, additional control technologies may be needed to reduce exposures. Administrative controls, where miners work on off schedules or upstream of diesel vehicles to avoid the exposures to DPM (Noll et al. 2015) is one possibility, but these types of solutions are not always feasible or practical. A canopy air curtain is another potential control technology to help reduce exposures of blasters to DPM. Listak and Beck (2012) showed that this control technology reduced respirable dust concentration under a roof bolter’s canopy by 67%–75% and recommended air velocities greater than 0.5 m/s for dust reductions of greater than 50%. Additional work showed that a canopy air curtain could be designed for a shuttle car, and some initial testing by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed reductions of respirable mine dust between 66% to 70%. As seen in Figure 1, the canopy air curtain delivers clean air over the operator’s breathing zone. A fan draws in air through a filter to capture the dust and then supplies clean air beneath the canopy where a miner is working. The use of the canopy air curtain to reduce exposures to diesel particulate matter was first discussed by Noll et al. (2020). In this study the diesel canopy air curtain (DCAC) reduced the DPM concentrations under the canopy by up to 90%. For this research the DCAC was designed to attach to the basket cover of an ammonium nitrate fuel oil ( ANFO) loader (Figure 2) and provide clean air blowing over the miners as they work in the basket. The initial tests used clean air drawn from the mine’s intake and did not try to filter the DPM from the air. Filtering DPM has extra challenges when compared to filtering mine dust particles. The particles of DPM are smaller (submicron and nanometer) than dust particles (greater than 1 micron); therefore, the filtration system must be adjusted to capture submicron particles. A MERV 13 filter was used in previous canopy air curtain research on mine dust control, but this filter is only designed to capture 50%–75% of submicron particles, and this capture efficiency is too low for removing DPM, so a higher efficiency filter is needed. Higher efficiency filters increase the pressure across the filter media which results in decreased airflow or leaks around the filter and reduces the effectiveness of the control for protecting miners from DPM. The optimal filter needs to capture DPM particles at a high efficiency while still allowing the needed airflows to prevent contaminated air from entering the miner’s breathing zone. Listak and Beck (2012) recommended velocities greater than 0.5 m/s for dust reductions of greater than 50%. However, airflows too high have been shown to reduce miners’ thermal comfort; Roghanchi et al. (2016) suggest the optimal velocity for thermal comfort is between 1–2 m/s. Thus, airflow over the miner should be limited to the range of 0.5 to 2.0 m/s. This current study presents the results from research evaluating the reduction of DPM concentrations, under the DCAC, when using a higher efficiency filter (MERV 16) to remove DPM from the DCAC airstream.

In most operating coal-cleaning plants, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. Reducing the pyrite recovery first requires that the primary recovery mechanism should be Identified, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not an important mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite from freshly-ground coal when the collector is a neutral oil, and that the bulk of the floated pyrite occurs either as a result of simple entrainment or by mechanical locking with floatable coal particles. Column flotation results are also presented which show that significant sulfur reductions can be achieved by reducing levels of entrainment.

Most of the production of copper in the United States comes from a few large companies. Often overlooked, however, are the more numerous small mining operations, which collectively produce a significant portion of the nation's copper. The objective of this paper is to describe the operations of a small mining company - Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation - how it views its place in this industry of giants, how it exploits the advantages offered by its relatively small size, and how it protects itself from the hazards being small introduces. Environment is, of course, a critical factor for such a company because it does not have the resources which help large companies weather periods of financial stress. Ideally, this environment is characterized by a heal thy economy, strong product demand, relatively stable prices , adequate grades and tonnages of ore commensurate with depth and over-burden, ready access to utilities, a dependable labor pool, and suitable technical "know how". When the environment is right, properties which were previously uneconomical to operate attract the attention of companies whose primary interest is a return on investment commensurate with risk over a reasonable period of time. Naturally, the amount of the investment and the duration of operation determines the size of the company which would be interested in such a venture. Such is the case with Ranchers Bluebird Mine at Miami, Arizona - a small property operated by a small company in a favorable economic environment.

Improved desulfurization of Illinois coals is a widely Shared research goal. The development of a physical cleaning strategy and the results of a project to demonstrate technical and economic feasibility of producing a low sulfur compliance coal from the Illinois Basin are reported. Processing flowsheets to extend or retrofit existing preparation plants are considered. Comminution, conventional and micro-bubble flotation, and selective agglomeration technologies were investigated to maximize pyrite rejection while maintaining high product yield. Batch bench scale testing was followed by continuous pilot plant studies. Parameters included grind size, flow rates, pulp density, aeration, agitation, and reagent dose. An economic evaluation of targeted processes is included.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct the 2013 National Mining Hall of Fame class on Sept. 14, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s five inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. The inductees are: Charles F. Barber, Donald W. Gentry, Patrick H. O?Neill, Milton H. Ward and David A. Zegeer. They will join 218 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 26th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Barber was a top executive at leading U.S. metals producer Asarco from 1956 to 1982. During his tenure, Asarco responded successfully to the demanding requirements of new environmental legislation in the United States and to changing concepts of foreign investment in mining, especially in Latin America. Gentry?s career took him from being a working mining engineer, to renowned mining educator, to president and chief executive officer of a mining company. As an educator, he had a positive impact upon hundreds, if not thousands, of new mining engineers and many others who took his short courses in mine economics. During his years in South America, O?Neill did everything from supervising operations of 15-bucket ladder gold dredges to becoming president of International Mining Corp. As an executive, he emphasized provision of education and training to local people working at mine sites for which he had responsibility. Ward?s experience covered the world and spectrum of metals, minerals and ores, ranging from A to Z (antimony to zinc and Australia to Zambia). He was president, chairman and chief executive officer of Cyprus Amax Minerals from 1992 to 1999, and he was president and chief operating officer of Freeport-McMoRan from 1983 to 1992, during which time he was instrumental in developing Freeport?s world-class Indonesian operations. Zegeer dedicated his mining career to protecting the health and safety of miners as a corporate executive, head of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and community leader. His tenure at MSHA coincided with a period of remarkable progress in U.S. mining safety .NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman Paul C. Jones said: ?The five outstanding gentlemen being honored this year as inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame are classic examples of the leadership and work ethic that has made America?s mining industry the world leader in technically sound, environmentally and socially correct, and economical mineral production that sets the standards for mining worldwide. We are very proud to add these five legendary gentlemen, who have demonstrated their sound technical and management skills to advance society on a worldwide basis, to our current list of 218 inductees being honored by the National Mining Hall of Fame.? 2013 Prazen Award winner ? "The drum agglomeration of nickel laterite and gold ores has been optimized through the design of experiments (DOE) using a Taguchi L16 (45) orthogonal array to determine the optimum conditions for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines. The effects of controllable operating factors including moisture content (nickel laterite ore: 34-37%; gold ore: 7-10%), retention time (2-3.5 min), drum speed (15-45% critical speed), drum load (nickel laterite ore: 8-32 %; gold ore: 6-22%) and acid concentration (150-600 g/L) on the performance of the agglomeration process were studied.For nickel laterite ore, maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) occurred under the following conditions: drum load (23.7%), moisture (36.5%), time (3 min), drum speed (30% critical speed) and acid concentration (150 g/L). Under the studied nickel laterite ore conditions, the most effective parameters for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines were found to be drum load and acid concentration, respectively. Drum speed had a statistically significant effect on minimizing the amount of fines. Maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) for gold ore occurred under the following conditions: drum load (19.3%), moisture (8.5%), time (2 min 15 s) and drum speed (40% critical). The most significant factors for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines for gold ore were found to be drum load, time and moisture.IntroductionSeveral heap leach operations have experienced problems in terms of poor recovery due to percolation issues caused by low-grade complex ores, tailings and clayey deposits. Poor percolation can lead to low metal extraction due to solution channeling or the development of impermeable/dead zones within the heap (Dhawan et al., 2012; Kappes, 2005). Improper heap building practices such as the use of loose agglomerates and inadequate attention toward the presence of clay minerals have been among the main reasons for percolation issues. During the transport of ore material, severe segregation of the material can occur. To overcome percolation problems, a major improvement was made through the introduction of agglomeration prior to ore placement. If the ore particles and agglomerates are of similar size, segregation can be avoided to a great extent (Dhawan et al., 2013; Kinard and Schweizer, 1987; McClelland and van Zyl, 1988). Agglomeration improves the uniform percolation of solution through ore heaps and is applicable to many ores, wastes and milled tailings (Bouffard, 2005; Dhawan et al., 2013). Manning and Kappes (2005) reported agglomeration/ stacking accounts for ~14% of the total heap leaching operating cost. The cost of binder is a primary contributor toward the total cost. Also, the lack of consistent quality control tests for agglomerate often leads to operational problems. The details are mentioned elsewhere (Dhawan et al., 2013). Considering the significant contribution of the agglomeration/stacking step toward the total heap leach operating cost, it is appropriate to study the agglomeration behavior and its optimization for two different ores. The reason to study the same parameters for different ores is the fact that significant variability in the agglomeration behavior of different ores has been reported to exist in industrial operations."

The lacustrine Green River Formation of Eocene age in the Green River Basin, southwest Wyoming, contains the world's large resource of natural sodium carbonate in bedded trona (Na2CO3? NaHCO3? 2H2O). In this study, 126 billion tons are estimated to be present in 22 beds, ranging from 4 to 36 feet in thickness. These 22 beds underlie areas of about 50 to more than 775 square miles at depths ranging from about 650 to more than 3,000 feet below the surface. The total resource of trona ore in the basin for which drilling information is available is estimated to be about 149 billion short tons. The undeveloped deeper trona beds in the southern part of the basin may be exploitable by solution mining. Additional unevaluated sodium carbonate resources are present in disseminated shortite in strata interbedded with the trona and in shallow sodium carbonate brines in the northeast part of the basin.

Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state's history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado's little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado's more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

Throughout the 1980's the tem Mine-Wide Monitoring System has had various meanings for manufacturers of these systems and underground mine operators alike. System suppliers had visions of grandeur in the early 80's as they envisioned each mine, that has more than a single section, installing a computer based monitoring system to provide surveillance, control and documentation of the entire mining operation, including everything from a single heat detector to the weekly payroll. In a few cases this may have become reality but the truth is these systems have quietly become a steady but unspectacular workbase for the modern mining industry of the 1990's. As it exists today the total market for underground monitoring systems may not exceed $10 million annually. Suppliers have lowered their expectations of the dollar value of this particular market. Some were entering a new market because of experience with computer based data acquisition systems. Others had been active in the mining industry for years with more traditional equipment (communication systems, methane monitors, safety equipment, etc.) and decided to become involved with Mine-Wide Monitoring Systems.

Introduction Autogenous, semi-autogenous, and conventional grinding circuits are used to process ores. Current emphasis, though, is towards the use of the first two systems. The reason is the generally lower initial investment required for an autogenous or semi-autogenous circuit as compared to a conventional comminution circuit. However, the effect of operating costs that will significantly affect overall comminution economics is not considered in this evaluation. About 70% of the energy in a mineral processing plant is used in the comminution circuit. Until the 1974 oil embargo, energy was relatively inexpensive. Since that time, the cost of energy has escalated 40-fold. As a result, energy cost now forms a significant portion of operating costs in comminution. According to a survey conducted by General Electric Co. (Powers, 1982), the price of electricity will continue to rise 15% to 20% per year, in spite of the current oil glut. Both autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits consume more energy than the conventional comminution circuit. Higher consumption ranging from 16% to 35% has been reported in the literature (Bassarear, 1982; Gjerdrum. 1979; Betts, 1982; and Christie, 1979). Consequently, even a small increase in energy costs is likely to have a significant impact on operating costs. Therefore, the economic decision of selecting an optimal comminution circuit is important. More than ever before, it is now critical to include in the evaluation of communition circuits not only the capital costs, but also the operating costs; in particular, the expected energy cost over the life of the operation. Failure to do this may lead to a less than optimal comminution circuit. Design A comminution system should be designed only after bench-scale or pilot plant testing of a representative sample. Conventional crushing and grinding circuits can be designed on the basis of the Bond Work Index (Rowland and Kjos, 1980). Over the years, sizing of full-scale rod and ball mills from Bond Work Index data has become well established. Autogenous and semi-autogenous mills cannot be sized based on bench-scale tests. Pilot plant tests are necessary to determine the amenability of the ore, critical size buildup, and power requirements. For this study, conventional and semi-autogenous grinding circuits were designed for ore throughput of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 90 kt/d (13,200, 26,400, 39,600, 52,000, 79,200, and 99,000 stpd). Rod and ball mills were scaled up on the basis of the Bond Work Index. A two-stage semi-autogenous grinding circuit was designed on the basis of pilot plant test results. Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively consistent over the past five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. Longwall production currently accounts for approximately 50% of U.S. underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face ventilation system and advancement of face ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has examined several basic principles of the longwall face ventilation system, and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face air flow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels from using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the amount of face air flow and to manage face air flow to most effectively minimize face workers' dust exposure. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results, throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980's and 1990's, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.
