On Tuesday, 10th November, 1987, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a colloquium attended by some 120 delegates on 'On-Stream Analysis' at Mintek, Randburg. Mr John Moore, Consulting Metallurgist of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Ltd, introduced Mr Gene Fivaz, the President- Elect of the SAIMM, who read an address by Mr B.C. Alberts, the current President. Mr Alberts was unable to attend the Colloquium owing to urgent business overseas. Opening The opening address emphasized the important role of minerals in the South African economy. In particular, it was noted that 20 per cent of the work force were employed in the minerals industry or associated industries. In recent years, production costs had risen as a result of inflation, and sanctions had had some effect on the exportation of minerals. Thus, there was continuing pressure on the industry to improve recoveries and increase efficiency.

The leaching of pyrolusite in acidic ferous sulphate solution was studied so that the important factors governing the kinetics of the reaction could be determined. The reaction is very rapid, and was monitored by continuous measurement and logging of the redox potential in solution by use of a microcomputer. The relationship between redox potential and manganese extraction was established empiricaly for each set of conditions by the use of a technique in which a calibration run was conducted in paralel with each leaching run. The study involved a number of batch leaching runs, and demonstrated that, of the variables investigated, only the initial ferous ion concentration and the reaction temperature afect the rate of manganese extraction. The final extraction did not vary. The reaction was modeled from the results by use of the shrinking-core model and Britan's activation-energy model. The later was found to provide a significantly better fit to the data.

The paper gives an assessment of the available data on the linear elastic fracture mechanics involved in stress corrosion cracking and in the behaviour of reactor pressure-vessel materials exposed to a simulated pressurized water-reactor environment. As a result of the different experimental techniques used in the various studies mentioned, only a few detailed conclusions can be drawn. The data from constant-displacement wedge-opening loading (WOL) tests, with the exception of one study, exhibited very limited or no crack extension during exposure periods of up to 14000 hours. The data from constant-load tests indicated evidence of crack extension, but the nature and extent of the crack extension are still unclear. When crack extension did occur, it was exclusively transgranular in nature. Certain differences in the available test data are tentatively explained in terms of the experimental procedures used, and the need for a consistent code of experimental techniques is highlighted.

SYNOPSIS Bad eyesight and poor illumination can contribute to the occurrence of accidents in mines. As one part of a study of this problem, surveys of light intensities have been conducted in 19 gold mines. On 17 of the mines the surveys were on one underground level only, whilst in two of the mines more intensive surveys were conducted by measuring light intensities in all areas to determine any inter-mine variations between the levels of illumination. Readings of light intensity were taken underground at stations, tips, winches, stopes, conveyor belts, waiting places, pump stations, fitters' and boilermakers' workshops, ambulance rooms and in haulages. It is concluded that the average levels of illumination in South African gold mines are comparable with those reported in the literature for mines elsewhere. Standardisation of lighting conditions underground could eliminate inter- and intra-mine variation in illumination levels where they occur. A guide to mine illumination practice would assist such standardisation, and help increase the levels and effectiveness of illumination in mines. Some suggestions are made in this latter connection.

Petrographic analyses of coal rank and maceral-group composition are widely used in the characterization of coal. This paper describes the use of an image analyser (IBAS Kontron) for fuly automated measurements of the rank and maceral groups of seam coals. The rank is then derived from reflectance histograms, or 'fingerprints', of coal reflectance distributions (being expressed as the mean random reflectance of vitrinite). The volume proportions of the maceral groups are calculated from the histograms. The results obtained with the IBAS were generally in agreement with those obtained by conventional methods of reflectance measurement and point-count analysis. However, the results were inconsistent for coals with a bimodal character or a wide V-class distribution. The rank of the analysed coals ranged from 0,50 to 1,10 per cent mean random reflectance. The lowest reflectance that can be analysed with the IBAS is 0,4 per cent. The speed, objectiveness, and repeatability of this technique make it exceptionally suitable for use in the quality control of large numbers of samples.

The principal advantages of fibre optics as compared to copper wire are well known and include almost perfect electromagnetic isolation, light weight, small size, excellent transmission security and substantially better bandwidth/distance performance. The decreasing cost of the optical fibre technology (both fibre cable and equipment) has led to another generation of private networks, which provide much larger bandwidths, very high reliability and an increase of the maximum geographical coverage. The larger bandwidth allows to transport all types of information on a single network. Typical communication requirements are speech (audio), computer data, LAN info, control information, video, etc. OTN or ‘Open Transport Network’ is a transmission system based on the latest available technology in fibre optics. It is characterized by the dual ring approach, resulting in high network availability, and the integration of different types of services in one network. As such, it can fulfil almost all transmission requirements for voice, data, LAN, video and any special service required.

SYNOPSIS The key reactions of the copper segregation process have been studied with a view to establishing the kinetics of the system. The investigation was carried out using two refractory copper ores from the Zambian Copperbelt in a small-scale, fluidized bed, chloridization reactor. The rate of chloridization of the copper in the ores is compared with the rate of volatilization of the cuprous chloride produced and with the rate of reduction of the cuprous chloride to form segregated metallic copper. In conjunction with available data on the rate of production of hydrogen chloride in a segregation system and with due regard to the conditions applicable in a TORCO reactor, it is concluded that the chloridization reaction is the major rate limiting step of the process. Factors influencing the rate of this extraction step and aspects of its mechanism are examined. The findings have confirmed the validity of the existing theory of segregation and provide insight as to the viability of the system of reactions involved in the copper segregation phenomenon. Experimental results which relate to observations made in the course of TORCO plant operation and segregation studies are discussed.

Kovohute Pribram is a plant recycling lead wastes, lead acid batteries in particular. Relevant new recycling technologies are being gradually developed. Outdated technology of smelting lead plates has been replaced by a new technology based on processing of entire batteries in a blast furnace according to the process developed by know-how of German Varta company. The classical Harris refining has been substituted by the oxygen refining. New technologies aimed at utilization of related wastes arising from refining lead bullion in Kovohute Pribram are being developed in house. At present, a new technology of utilization of spent battery acid for extracting zinc from various wastes has been developed. Zinc oxide dross from alkaline refining of lead bullion, during which residual zinc from the preceding vacuum de-zincing is removed as well as waste zinc galvanic sludges (a product of neutralizing precipitation of metals from industrial wastewaters with lime) were treated. In this study, the new developed technology yielding basic zinc carbonate - a valuable raw material for zinc electrowinning, is described together with the first experience of applying the developed method to processing zinc wastes on a pilot scale. Most of the equipment used in the past to regenerate alkali solutions originating from Harris refinery was utilized in the practical realization of this new technology.

The sequential flotation of copper, lead, and zinc in that order is practised at the Broken Hill Concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited. The minerals of economic importance are chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with associated silver. The targets for recovery and grade in the lead and zinc circuits were reached quite readily after start-up, but the copper circuit failed to meet the performance requirements with respect to both recovery' and grade. The original circuit for copper is described, together with the subsequent investigations and modifications that were required to produce acceptable metallurgical results. Circuits for semi-bulk and bulk flotation were tried, and the effect of the oxidation state of the pulp was investigated extensively and found to be all important. Tests were conducted on the depression of lead in the cleaning circuit by the use of sodium dichromate, and on heating with the addition of sulphurous acid. The latter technique was ultimately the more successful. The proportion of fresh to recycle water entering the circuit was shown to be important. The original reagent regime was altered and augmented. A more recent problem has been the contamination of the ore with cemented backfill. The changes that this new condition necessitated are described. Success has been measured by a continuous improvement in the economics of the copper recovery.

Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Spokane Research Laboratory is developing, modifying, and testing equipment to replace the necessity of doing lifting tasks manually. To reduce single-event lift injuries, equipment having mechanical automatic weight sensing and balancing control was investigated. The Coleman manipulator was selected for testing. Modifications to the Coleman manipulator to make it more suitable for underground mine use included mobilization, self-containment, all-purpose gripper attachment, and support jacks. To reduce or eliminate the need to clean off manually the materials that commonly plug grizzly openings (timbers, wire mesh, roof bolts, and other debris), a track-guided pincher arm device was developed. The TGPA attaches to an impact hammer head, and the pincher arms are controlled by the operator of the hammer. Oversized rock can be broken with the pincher arms in the up position; the arms can then be lowered to grab and remove debris. Sweeping action to remove cohesive fines bridging grizzly openings is also greatly improved. This device is especially useful in recessed grizzlies. An industrial gun was tested to evaluate its effectiveness in breaking oversized rock. Boulders up to 76 cm in diameter were successfully broken to minus 33 cm. Although methods to control flyrock need to be developed, an industrial gun may be a safe and inexpensive alternative to breaking oversized rock in certain underground mining situations. The National Institute for Metallurgy - usually referred to as NIM - has become the Council for Mineral Technology, or Mintek. The Honourable F. W. de Klerk, Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs, announced the change of name at the official opening of the main entrance to Mintek's premises on 30th October, 1981. Awards for bravery Two men who disregarded the dangers of fiercely burning timber and falling rocks to douse an underground fire, using their hard hats to scoop water from a drain, received the Chamber of Mines Award for bravery at a ceremony held at West Driefontein Gold Mine near the end of October.

The University of Kentucky (UK), with an enrollment of 25,891 in fall 2002, is a comprehensive, public land-grant university located in the Bluegrass Region of Central Kentucky. As the State’s flagship university, UK has long been involved in distance education, first through traditional correspondence courses, followed by use of videotape and satellite delivery in the 1970s and1980s, but soon supplanted by use of interactive television (ITV) and on-line course delivery in the 1990s to date. Today, UK Distance Learning Programs annually administers approximately600 course sections, with services provided to over 5200 enrollees. Courses are offered via six media: interactive video, Internet, on-site, satellite, open-air and cable television, and videotape, with hybrid delivery becoming increasingly popular. The University of Kentucky College of Engineering experience with distance instruction prior to 1985 was limited to videotape non-credit offerings. The Department of Mining Engineering, a small department in terms of numbers of both faculty and students, was a University pioneer in distance education. The first University degree program offered in its entirety by distance delivery(initially by itinerant faculty) was the Master of Mining Engineering. Satellite delivery from Lexington to Cumberland, Kentucky, was a welcomed change of delivery mode in 1987–88,resulting in six hours less travel time for faculty each week. Shortly thereafter, other initiatives directed toward fulfilment of its land-grant mission were undertaken by the College. Use of satellite for course delivery rapidly declined due to limited interactivity, in favour of compressed video and on-site instruction. Classroom sites in the Kentucky Tele-Linking Network (KTLN) now number over 200. The Network links schools, colleges and universities, as well as public and private agencies throughout the State. The KTLN supports voice, video, and data transmission in a uniformly-equipped environment. Beginning in the early 1990s, transfer-critical pre-engineering courses were delivered from Lexington to Kentucky’s community colleges with the largest pre-engineering enrolments. Success was limited, but lessons learned were invaluable. In 1996, the University of Kentucky College of Engineering was asked by the Kentucky Council on Higher Education (the predecessor to the Council on Postsecondary Education) to expand engineering education in Kentucky, first by initiating cooperative B.Sc. degree programmes in Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering on the campus of Paducah Community College (PCC), located 400 km from the UK campus in Lexington. The third partner in these programmes is Murray State University (MuSU), a public regional comprehensive university 80 km south of Paducah. The genesis of the new degree programmes, which were subjected to ABET review in October 2002, as well as a summary of the major accomplishments and challenges of the innovative programmes, will be offered. The limited use of distance technologies for course delivery in these B.Sc. degree programmes will be discussed. A ‘no-spin’ overview of other non-traditional distance-learning ventures within the College of Engineering will be chronicled, with an honest assessment of the motivation for these efforts and, where appropriate, their relative degree of success. Among these ventures are: a BScME and a Master of Engineering programme at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky, Georgetown, Kentucky; course exchange in Chemical Engineering between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville; an ITV-based Master of Engineering programme for practicing engineers in Kentucky; proposed joint-degree programmes in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with Western Kentucky University; and a proposed part-time MScME programme in Paducah, Kentucky, with a start date of August 2002, threshold enrolment permitting. It is difficult to evaluate exploration properties in a manner that is transparent, repeatable and easily re-calculated to cater for different geological interpretations, but the risk-based assessment methodology, the Geological Risk Method, developed and described by Lord et al (2001) attempts to satisfy all these criteria. This paper examines a case study example based on valuations of exploration projects conducted by SRK Consulting using this methodology, and describes some of the advantages and limitations of the method.

A colloquium on industrial minerals entitled' A Strategy for Growth in the Industrial Minerals Sector' was held at Mintek on 5th November, 1991, under the auspices of the Extractive Metallurgy Sub-Committee of the SAIMM. The SAIMM had not been previously active in the field of industrial minerals, and the programme was designed to appeal to the middle management of mining and manufacturing companies in the industrial-minerals field. A total of 86 registered for the Colloquium, a predominance of the delegates (65 per cent) being non-members of the SAIMM. Two overseas delegates were registered after announcements

A computer-aided blast design consultant system has been developed. The software consists of two modules: one uses theoretical and empirical formulae and procedures to design a blast based on user supplied geological and mechanical data, while the other is an expert system that analyzes blast vibration problems and recommends remedial action using knowledge based rules. The system is currently undergoing field evaluation.

Operations of the strip mine at Arnot Colliery are described, and the improved volumetric extraction of the in situ coal reserves that has been obtained by the application of strip-mining techniques is highlighted. An account is given of the major problems encountered during the early stages of the operation with particular reference to overburden removal. coal and parting handling, and transportation. The techniques used in dealing with the problems and the current degree of success in overcoming them are outlined.

Methods for the prediction of seepage quality from waste-disposal facilities are evaluated for input to the design of desalination treatment facilities. This is done by reference to a waste dump seeping into a near-surface aquifer, the contaminated seepage being collected by scavenger wells. As the quality of contaminated water intercepted by the wells will vary with both space and time, it is necessary for predictive methods to accommodate such variations. One-dimensional and two-dimensional predictive solute transport models are described and applied to the seepage and scavenger-well example mentioned above. The advantages and disadvantages, interims of overall applicability, data requirements, and possible accuracy, are described and discussed. While one-dimensional models have the advantages of speed, simplicity, and cost, the frequent requirement of prediction in both space and time necessitates more complex, two-dimensional simulation.

(Rand) (Fellow) The processes involved in the smelting in an electric furnace of nickel-copper concentrates containing platinumgroup metals are described. These are concentrate drying, pelletizing, pellet drying, and flux and pellets proportioning, followed by smelting of the concentrate in a submersible-electrode electric furnace, which is discussed in more detail. The furnace matte is blown in a converter to the white-metal stage and is cast in moulds, whilst the slag is granulated, ground, and floated for recovery of valuable metals and afterwards pumped to the tailing dam.

It is often said in business that if you don't have a customer you don't have a business. The same rule applies to project evaluation; if you don't have customers you really don't have a viable project. It is therefore essential that in the early stages of project evaluation the following fundamental questions are addressed: ? What products will this project produce? ? Who are the potential customers? ? What are the customers' requirements with respect to grade and impurities? ? Do they have adequate capacity to take the production from the proposed project? ? Will the products introduce adverse effects in the customer's process circuits? ? Will additional waste streams requiring disposal be produced? In the past the attitude has been along the lines of the customer will take whatever we produce at the mine site. Times have now changed with customers now operating under much tighter environmental regulation with waste disposal becoming increasingly difficult. It would therefore be prudent that the principles of product stewardship be used as a tool in project evaluation. This paper will provide a general discussion on customer requirements and provide detail on case studies of the impact of mine products on smelter process circuits. It will provide examples where there were synergies between the mine product and the smelter circuit and where the mine product had adverse impacts on smelter performance.
