"A number of conventional and advanced analytical techniques (proximate and ultimate analysis, low-temperature oxygen-plasma ashing, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, coal petrography, and lightelement electron microprobe analysis) have been integrated and crosschecked to provide detailed characterization of coals from the Highveld coalfield in South Africa, as a basis for better understanding of the mineralogical and chemical properties of the individual coal sources that are blended as feedstocks for combustion and carbon conversion processes. The techniques included methods to quantify the abundance and composition of the mineral matter (minerals and non-mineral inorganic elements), and also the abundance and chemical composition of the individual macerals in the individual coals concerned.Kaolinite is the most abundant of the minerals in the coals studied, with lesser but still significant proportions of quartz, mica and/or illite, dolomite, calcite, and pyrite. Small but variable proportions of anatase, goyazite, and siderite are present in some coal samples. Electron microprobe analysis, based on a special configuration for light-element study, shows that the vitrinite contains less carbon and more oxygen, and has significantly higher concentrations of nitrogen and organic sulphur, than the inertinite macerals in the same samples. Minor proportions of organically-associated inorganic elements, including titanium, were also identified in some of the maceral components.A comprehensive knowledge of the minerals and non-mineral inorganic elements in the coals used for feedstock preparation, obtained by integration of data from these advanced analytical techniques with more conventional analyses, may be of benefit in understanding the processes that take place during coal utilization, and also in avoiding or ameliorating some of the operational and environmental problems that may occur in different sectors of the coal utilization industry."

"Flotation plant design, construction and start-up can be challenging tasks, because multiple factors and disciplines have to be combined in an efficient manner, in order to execute a project that meets the technical, financial and timeframe expectations. Key considerations that need to be addressed when designing a flotation plant are process requirements, equipment integrability, automation, and up- and downstream processes/designs. Furthermore, several other lifecycle factors need to be considered, such as servicing and maintainability, operational costs, future expansions and decommissioning, among others. To address these challenges, Outotec has developed a new approach to designing flotation plants that targets eliminating most of the inherent risks that can be found in these types of projects. The new Outotec® plant is a fully modular approach in which the above-mentioned challenges have been taken into consideration in the design phase. As a result, the cPlant concept can give several benefits for new and experienced companies involved in the minerals processing business, such as lower risk investments, fast and cost-efficient flotation plant delivery, faster ramp-up period, easy plant expansions, fully automated processes and operation and maintenance ease. As well, dismantling and transportation of the cPlant to a new location is easy and fast, hence the new cPlant concept makes possible to exploit small, short-lifespan ore deposits and also retreat old tailings ponds that might contain valuable minerals and where the ore quantities are limited. Furthermore, cPlant is easily implemented for brownfields and temporary expansions during bigger expansions."

The mathematical framework of a well-established model proposed earlier by the authors for the screening process is briefly recalled. Some numerical methods for the application of the model, concerning numerical solution of the equations and parameter estimation, are indicated. Some applications of the model to improve screening operations, sizing of screen, simulation of screening and of integrated plant operations are discussed, and the computer software to be used for these purposes is described in detail.

During the course of 2011 the nationalization of mines emerged as one of the most contentious and emotive political issues under review. Some four years after the African National Congress electoral conference held in Polokwane, which had led to a change of leadership within the country's ruling party, elements within the ruling party's youth league, which had been virulently supportive of the change in leadership, turned on the incumbent President, using the mining question as its rallying call. At issue was the expressed perception that mining has, since the country's democratization, not delivered the anticipated benefits to the population as a whole, continues to be the preserve of the capitalist element of the South African community, and is therefore in need of radical reform. Aspersions were made that transformation within the industry had failed dismally and that mining companies had not delivered against their commitments to the Mining Charter and social and labour plans. The debate became extremely vocal and heated, evoked dramatic and emotive opinions, and vigorous skirmishes on the matter were fought in the media over much of 2011 and into 2012.

The titanium industry demands high titanium feedstock for their processes. As rutile resources are limited, ilmenite has become the most important titanium source. Ilmenite smelting is an important part of upgrading ilmenite to high titanium feedstock. In the year 2005, upgrading of ilmenite by smelting, producing a slag with 80-90% Ti02, accounted for approximately 40% of the feedstock to the Ti02 pigment industry. In ilmenite smelting molten iron is produced together with a slag, which in addition to titanium oxide contains iron oxide as well as various impurity oxides of manganese, magnesium, silicon, aluminium, etc. Titanium is present mainly as Ti02 but partly also as Ti203. It is known that the concentration of Ti203 increases with decreasing concentration of FeO, but this dependency is affected by the nature of the impurity oxides. Sigurdson and Moore1 showed that slags high in CaO and MgO had a lower concentration of Ti203 than slags high in Si02 for the same amount of FeO. Pistorius2 showed in 2002 that if the impurity oxides MnO and MgO are counted, on a molar basis, as FeO, and Cr203, V203 and part of the A1203*), as Ti203, industrial slags will have a composition close to that of the M305 phase, where M denotes the elements Ti, Fe, Mn, etc, and which has the pseudobrookite structure. However, for equilibrium with liquid metallic iron he computed, by means of a computer program FACT, that the slag equilibrium composition is represented by a curved line in the ternary phase diagram FeTi03-TiO2-Ti2O3, but with a significantly higher concentration of trivalent titanium than actually observed in the industrial slags, and he discussed various mechanisms by which the slag during solidification could change its composition to a lower Ti203 content, but the possibility that the computed compositions might be wrong was not mentioned. Trane113 found in her research on titaniferous silicate slags a lower Ti3+/ Ti4+ ratio than that which is computed by the FACT program. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the equilibrium composition of Fe-Ti-O slag in equilibrium with liquid metallic iron, as well as the effects of impurities such as Si02, CaO and MgO on the slag composition. Industrial slags from TINFOS Titan and Iron KS (TTI) will also be discussed and their compositions will be plotted in the ternary phase diagram. These are slags produced from Tellnes ilmenite, quite high in magnesium and iron. Experimental In the past, equilibrium studies of the Fe-Ti-O slag system were difficult when it came to producing the slag. It was difficult to find a suitable crucible for the meltings. The highly corrosive slag would attack all known refractories, and the metal would attack metallic crucibles such as those made of platinum and molybdenum. In the present investigations the slag-metal combination was prepared in a high-frequency induction furnace with a vertically segmented water-cooled copper crucible. The crucible is shown in Figures 1 a and 1b. It was designed by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) with power from a 75 kVA high-frequency generator (750 kHz) supplied by Farfield Electronics Pty, Ltd, Australia. This paper describes and sets in context the commercially proven uranium extraction processes. It also discusses some of the technologies that are currently being pursued with the aim of reducing costs and overcoming a number of technical issues that are faced by process designers and operators. In doing so, opportunities for the transfer of extraction technology from other industries/commodities are identified. The key processing areas that are examined include: ?The influence of mineralogy. The type of uranium mineralization and the nature of its association within a particular deposit will have a major impact on process route selection. Uranium minerals are classified according to their influence on extractive metallurgy. As the uranium price has risen in recent times, so opportunities are increasing for the recovery of uranium from less conventional resources such as phosphates and fossil fuels. ?The opportunities for employing techniques aimed at reducing the capital and operating costs of the overall process such as heap leach and beneficiation. Preconcentration by screening, gravity separation and radiometric sorting can potentially reduce the mass flow to the downstream leach and recovery plants. ?Purification or separation of uranium in carbonate systems. While it is possible to directly precipitate uranium from clarified leachate, the presence of impurities such as vanadium, molybdenum and others may dictate that ion exchange or selective precipitation is employed. Advances have been made in other industries in terms of improved ion exchange equipment aimed at reducing resin inventories and hence costs. ?Separation in acid leach systems. Earlier developments included the use of combined SX-IX systems (Eluex or Bufflex) and the introduction of continuous countercurrention exchange (CCIX). Column SX has found a ready application to uranium in view of the rapid extraction kinetics. With the renewed interest in uranium processing, efforts are being redirected towards further development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) as a means of driving down capital and operating costs. ?Extraction in a chloride environment. Australia and Namibia are desert countries where good quality water comes at a cost. However, both have access to saline water from either the ocean or subterranean aquifers. The issues associated with operating a uranium extraction operation in such environments is discussed. ?Extraction from less conventional sources. Recent price increases for U3O8 have resulted in a number of companies examining the recovery of uranium from sources such as fossil fuels and phosphate deposits. Both of these areas were examined in the 1970s and 1980s and a number of approaches were commercialized. The paper reviews the extraction options.

"The quantification of mineral resources and evaluation of process performance in mining operations at Gole Gohar iron ore deposit requires a precise model of the spatial variability of three variables (Fe, P, and S) which must be determined. According to statistical analysis there are complex multivariate relationships between these variables such as stoichiometric constraints, nonlinearity, and heteroskedasticity. Due to the impact of these complexities in decision-making, they should be reproduced in geostatistical models. First of all, in order to maintain the compositional and stoichiometric constraints, additive log-ratio (alr) transformation has been applied. In the next step cosimulation, using stepwise conditional transformation (SCT) and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS) has been used to simulate multivariate data. Through statistical and geostatistical validations it is shown that the algorithms were able to reproduce complex relationships between variables, both locally and globally. IntroductionThe key steps in mining projects are the quantification of mineral resources, definition of mining reserves, and production scheduling. They rely on the construction of a block model that is used to represent basically the spatial distribution of ore grades (Montoya et al., 2012). The determination of grades and tonnages affects risk assessment and economic evaluation of mining projects. Evaluation of process performance in mining operations requires geostatistical modelling of many related variables (Barnett and Deutsch, 2012). Iron ore quality is characterized by multiple variables: not only the iron grade but also the contaminants that interfere in the subsequent steel manufacturing processes. Consequently, the spatial variability of multiple variables must be determined. Key variables are frequently correlated, and such correlations must be honoured during estimation and simulation. Data from iron ore deposits constitutes compositional data; furthermore, relationships the between assay data are often heteroskedastic."

The monitoring of rock slopes is a common procedure in the management of hazards associated with slope instability. Slope stability radar has become widely accepted as the state-of-the-art method for management of hazards associated with unstable slopes in open pit mines. This is confirmed by the rapid adoption of the technology since inception in mid 2003, with over 70 GroundProbe slope stability radars now in use at open pit operations throughout the World. The use of a monitoring system such as slope radar to identify slope hazards is only part of the solution to minimise the consequences associated with slope instability. The presence of the hazard must also be effectively communicated to the mine personnel, so that the correct response to the hazard can be enacted, and the risk mitigated to an acceptable level. In some surface mines, due to the geotechnical characteristics of the rock mass, hazards can develop rapidly; with slopes progressing from stability to ultimate collapse in just hours. In these situations, it is vital that efficient systems are developed to evacuate the area of the pit affected. Such a system has been developed by GroundProbe in South Africa, with the vital driving force for the project being provided by the Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena mine operation based at Mokopane. The mine based development of the system was perceived as an essential aspect in the development of the successful system. From an early stage, the mine provided essential input on both hardware and software developments to allow the system to be rapidly integrated into the mining operation. This paper describes the pit evacuation alarm system that was developed and discussed the benefits obtained from a mine based development program.

Tailings produced from the iron ore industry present many challenges due to the high economic and environmental impacts involved with their disposal. However, the relative scarcity of high-grade iron ores has driven manufacturers to recover and recycle these valuable tailings (secondary sources). This study aimed at the purification of ultrafine tailings with high sulphur content from an iron ore concentrator via reverse flotation to produce pellet feed fines. A specially designed flotation column featured with a nano bubble generator and a conventional bubble generator were employed to assess the effects of nano bubbles on the desulfurisation performance of iron ore concentrate under different operating conditions. Results obtained from this study indicated that the sulphur content of iron concentrate could be reduced from 1.2% to 0.22% in the presence of nano bubbles. Also, the results showed that use of nano-micro bubbles increased sulphur recovery 20% more, in comparison to micro bubbles. Mining professionals recognize the need to continuously evaluate and refine mine planning standards and scheduling. We must examine our current reality, and evaluate the following: •How well do our planning standards represent the actual mining process? •To what extent do they support the requirements of the downstream mining activities? •How we apply them to operational management and control? In most operations, mine-planning standards are global averages. Little differentiation is madein quantifying key planning variables. Often standards used in the long-term, are applied to the short-term, and the standards and scheduling precedents are only reviewed occasionally. Mine-planning standards applied to production schedules are often only focused on the management of functional mining performance, and play no role in managing the requirements of down stream processing. Many mining operations are characterized by high levels of fluctuation, and typically incorporate a wide range of factors and adjustments to compensate for deviations from performance targets, in mining operations as well as for the other business areas. The reason for using global averages is because of a lack of understanding of the causes of deviations that occur through the process, and the impact that they may have on the performance of the business as a whole. Average standards and factors are often used to quantify the variability in a system. From these average values, measurement standards and performance targets are derived for the planning and execution environments. During the execution of a plan/schedule there will be deviation in actual performance and the planned ‘average’ standards. In reality the ‘average’ conditions seldom occur and the impact of variability and interdependency are seldom constant or predictable. The predictability of variability and interdependency is further complicated by the fact that mining conditions have a role to play in the actual production performance, and they too are variable. By developing the throughput knowledge of our production systems, we can better understand the nature of variability and the interdependency within the systems as well as the impact of interdependency between the links in our production chains. With this knowledge, planning standards and scheduling precedents can be better defined and sensibly differentiated. This will improve planning and management of ore utilization, mining production and the effectiveness of processing. As a result the business will be more stable and predictable and business performance will be improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe: •At a high level, the scope for refining and differentiation in mine planning standards, and incorporating geological and plant parameters into mine scheduling. This will improve planning and scheduling and the overall performance of the mine. Given our current level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should be able to plan and schedule production so that we can manage pro-actively and improve business performance. In doing so we can also improve reconciliation and value tracking through mining and processing •The flexibility and functionality of the XPAC planning and scheduling tool that will enable a throughput management approach.

Tronox Namakwa Sands operates two ilmenite smelters for the production of high-titania slag and low-manganese pig iron. Slag or metal is tapped from one of two product-specific, bi-level tap-holes. In this paper the refractory design specific to the tap-hole refractory layout is described, as well as practices for slag and metal tapping and refractory maintenance. Further developments planned are briefly described.

Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.

A computer-aid is described that is designed to calculate steady-state material balances for ore-dressing circuits. The program determines the material balance from a specification of the process condition. No mathematical models or data adjustment techniques are employed. As such the program complements existing simulation and material balance 'smoothing' packages. The process condition is specified using performance indicators. These are significant parameters in the industry with which all practising mineral processors are very familiar. The program employs an equation-oriented technique for material balancing and so has had to deal with the difficulties peculiar to that approach.

This paper summarizes the works that the Research “Group of Ground Engineering”, belonging to the Mining Department of the University of Oviedo, Spain, has been developing in close cooperation with the Regional Mining Department, since 2001, in order to control and monitor an experimental underground limestone exploitation by the room and pillars method. The aim of the current research is not only the geotechnical characterization of the rock mass (by means of laboratory and site tests) or the instrumentation of its displacements and stress changes (using convergence meters, INCREX probe, extensometers and rigid inclusion cells), but, moreover, to undertake intensive monitoring and control of such pilot mine, which is mined exclusively in order to accomplish this research. The data transmission was made on line via Internet, to achieve a full understanding of the behaviour of the experimental mine, to access data from remote locations and to visualize results from a website. All the collected information becomes input data for several numerical models using finite differences under a program developed in the research Group, ALMEC. The simulation and a final economical analysis lead to a design of an underground exploitation, at production scale, for a resource that is traditionally mined by means of open-pit process methods that could be worked underground with less environmental impact. The main purpose achieved by this exhaustive analysis is the technical and economic viability of such mine, for their optimisation for a future productive exploitation.

A three-stage operative planning of mining operations in ore opencasts is considered. The hierarchy of monthly-weekly, weekly-daily, daily-shift planning is offered. For the fastest elimination and deviations in problematic situations a level is analysed and weekly-daily or monthly-weekly operative plans are being constantly updated. Operative planning is formulated on information received of preparation and working of mining panels. The electronic maps of these panels are considered for automated operative planning. On the data of the registration of blasthole drillings on a panel, the position of blasthole entry, their depth and the number of a line are determined. The geologist specifies boundaries of ore grades by the bored silt. The qualitative characteristics of ores are determined by the chemical analysis of slime or magnetic logging of blastholes. The missing geologic information is obtained by interpolation on the data of detailed and operational explorations. During working of the mining panel the technologists mark the movement of shovels, associating this movement to blastholes. For this purpose technological attributes are used: when was the blasthole drilled, what drill-rig participated in drilling, what shovel was used and when was it worked? Around each blasthole the zone of its influence is built up. It represents a discrete, elementary volume of ore or waste. The discrete form of the data is most convenient, as it allows step-by-step methods to be employed of the scheduled tasks in many and various combinations. The account panel working technology avoids ‘combination’ explosions. The elementary blocks should be placed in a trajectory of shovel movement and the trajectory can not be arbitrary. It’s determined by the technological rules of extracting and loading of mine mass. In linking to blastholes, the trajectory of shovels is simulated by the sum of step-by-step moving from one elementary block to another. For this purpose a geometrical linkage of blastholes is used. At a railway haulage, or complete mining with truck haulage, the trajectory of movement is a shuttle along the front of operations in the panel. At a selective mining of ores the number of possible directions is limited to three: moving of a shovel by idle running along the front of operations in the panel, frontal pull all the way down of the panel, and withdrawal. The technologically acceptable trajectories of shovel movement are stored for the following estimation and selection of the best. The estimation is carried out on mathematical models with criteria on the method of the least squares of deviations based on preset parameters from the plan, uniform loading of shovels, and mixing of ore at unloading points. The equations of balance type and directive parameters of the plan, as well as technological restrictions of solid and of elementary blocks within the limits of a trajectory are the restrictions of the model. Depending on an industrial situation it is possible to choose one of the predetermined models. The presented technique is used for longitudinal shovel bench at the Erdenet ore-dressing company.

A simplified two-dimensional plane strain numerical technique for the non- linear modelling of a tabular mining excavation in brittle host rock under high stress conditions is described. The model has been developed using relatively straightforward assumptions based on extensive underground investigation of the fracturing and deformation of rock at the stope face in deep gold mines on the Witwatersrand, together with observed rock behaviour under laboratory conditions. The reef rock is modelled as a linear string of yielding elements which interact horizontally, while the elastic rockmass remote from the reef is modelled using boundary element techniques. This elementary technique is shown to produce results which agree closely with the observed behaviour of the fractured rock during the mining of a remnant pillar

During the last 12 months, Sandvik?s Technical Service Group has carried out nine Scoping and Pre-feasibility studies for the application of In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) for large mining companies; the majority in conjunction with the Snowden Consulting Group. During these studies several key and recurring drivers have been identified: 1. Mining schedule issues ? there are several issues which crop up repeatedly, including: ?the unnecessary curvature of pit walls, ?very high rates of vertical advance which are (created by schedule optimisers to minimise stripping at all times) which are at the limit of what can be realistically achieved (and which of course make it harder for IPCC to achieve any impact), and ?The allocation of material to semi-mobile systems to maximise the ability for IPCC to be an effective alternative. 2. IPCC productivity issues ? the key issues are the IPCC system operating hours achievable, and the system throughput (both instantaneous and the average). 3. IPCC Risk issues ? there are perceptions about the risks associated with the use of IPCC which are a mix of reality and fiction, but which nonetheless create negativity towards the use of IPCC. In this paper, the authors wish to address specifically the factors affecting the IPCC productivity.

In recent years, rapid depletion of the higher grade reserves, allied to decreases in paylimits, has led to the exploitation of secondary, erratically mineralized placer horizons on various marginal and low grade gold mines. On Blyvooruitzicht Mine, the rich Carbon Leader Reef has limited reserves, necessitating exploration of the lower grade Middelvlei Reef. This placer has always presented evaluation and exploration problems, to such an extent that it was, at one stage, considered uneconomic. Despite an extensive underground drilling programme no ore reserve targets of reasonable size were apparent. However, when a certain degree of parallelism between sedimentological trends in the Middelvlei Reef and the underlying Carbon Leader was recognized, a meaningful exploration model could be developed. Firstly, all historical sampling records for the Carbon Leader were entered into a computerized system; the database comprised in excess of 340 000 data points. Variables captured consisted of gold value, uranium value, con- glomerate thickness and total reef thickness. The raw data were then averaged into blocks, and plots of different variables were computer-generated for further analysis. This enabled the Carbon Leader to be modelled sedimentologically and, thereby, exploration targets for the Middelvlei Reef were generated, based on the Carbon Leader facies trends. Geostatistical analysis of sampling data in exposed areas of the Middelvlei Reef underground has confirmed the sedimentological breakdown of the placer into distinct facies areas. A facies model relating value distribution patterns to depositional trends, both for the Carbon Leader and the Middelvlei Reef, has thus been incorporated into a mine planning strategy.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) operates a 50 Mtpy copper/gold/silver mine and concentrator on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. BCL has installed an in-house developed data logging and supervisory process control system using a DEC PDP 11/73 mini-computer in the mill and has recently installed a similar system in the crushing plant. Together with the central DEC VAX 11/780 computer, they form part of a high speed, fibre optic, local area network in the concentrator. The in-house developed software, known as BIAS (Bougainville Copper Information and Automation System), was developed as a low cost option to interface to a number of different existing plant input/output systems while providing the capability to make maximum use of computer networking facilities. The package includes the more usual control system colour displays and data logging features, but also makes provision for two novel features: (a) Any user connected to the computer network can access the system displays. This allows metallurgists and management to monitor (but not control) plant operation from their offices. (b) Specialized application programs for performing advisory and supervisory control, dynamic simulation, and data analysis are easily incorporated into the system. The mill process system currently runs rougher/scavenger flotation stabilizing control and general data logging. The crushing plant system currently performs data logging only; however it will soon be augmented with the facility to run dynamic crushing plant simulations. Future developments will concentrate on making greater use of the detailed information available from the mine's fully automatic truck dispatch system which runs on a VAX 11/780 computer. Milling process control will be expanded to examine possible economic control of the operation of regrind and cleaner flotation circuits. An advisory water management system to optimize water supply within powerhouse generating capacity constraint will also be investigated.

The planned extraction of the No. 1 shaft pillar at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine highlighted a number of potential problems. In spite of the relative shallowness, careful thought had to be given to stope phasing owing to the detrimental effect of the anticipated geology and the fact that uninterrupted hoisting was necessary. Extensive use was made of computer modellig to design the stope phasing, determine the influence of regional support and to predict the direction and magnitude of displacements in the shaft. The paper describes the success of this design approach, and measured displacements in the stoping horizon and shaft barrel are compared to those obtained from the original computer model
