Opening: On Tuesday, 9th June, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a well-attended Colloquium on Milling at Mintek, Randburg. The meeting opened with a short address by Dr H. Wagner, Director General of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization. In his address, he highlighted the cost of the milling process to the industry. The fact that the industry at home and overseas had, at considerable expense, sent some 270 delegates to the Colloquium demonstrated the industry's concern at the high cost of this process. Clearly, this cost could be reduced only by greater understanding and interchange of information, which was the purpose of meetings such as these. Mine water The Third International Mine Water Congress is to be held in Melbourne from 23rd to 28th October, 1988, the year of Australia's bicentenary.

To evaluate the quantitative tunnel behavior influenced by characteristics of discontinuity, this pa-per executes the parametric study using 2 and 3-dimensional DEM analysis. First of all, this study finds that displacement and the stress of shortcrete are proportioned to frequency of joint and rockbolt axial force is adversely proportioned too. Secondly, it is found that the most sensitive in-put parameter used in Barton-Bandis(BB) model is residual friction angle. Finally, when joint sets are encountered at tunnel excavation face, to identify the most critical joint orientation is very crucial for a stability of tunnel. La thèse a pour but d’étudier les influences sur la stabilité du tunnel, au niveau du réseau de la discontinuité et de la valeur de sa nature aquis par le projet récemment exécuté en vue de mener à l’analyse quantitative de cette stabilité, en appliquant chaque différent paramètre comme la fréquence de diaclase, la constante de résistance des modèles de Barton-Bandis(BB) ainsi que la relation entre le sens d’excavation du tunnel et le réseau de diaclase en 3 dimensions. En fait, cette étude nous a montré que la fréquence de diaclase s’accroît proportionnellement au déplacement et à la contrainte du béton projeté. L’angle de friction résiduel s’est montré le plus sensible à la stabilité du tunnel parmi les modèles de BB. Aussi à travers l’analyse à 3 dimensions, il s’est vérifié que si l’angle de pente du groupe de diaclase est horizontal entre l’axe du tunnel et la direction, il donne une influence importante sur le comportement du tunnel. En particulier, l’influence était la plus importante sur un fond rocheux dont la diaclase horizontale est grande. Um das quantitative Verhalten des Tunnels zu bewerten, eroertert dieses Papier eine parametrische Studie mit Hilfe der DEM Analyse. Auch wird hier eine zweidimensionale Analyse von Ver-bindungen verschiedener Frequenzen in der Gesteinsmasse, eine sensitive Analyse von allen der im Barton-Bandis-Modell (BB) genutzten Parameter und eine Dreidimensional-Analyse mit ver-schiedenen dreidimensionalen geometrischen Veteilungen von Verbindungen ausgefuehrt. Erstens: Die Studie findet heraus, dass Vedraengung und Druck im Shortcrete proportional zur Frequenz von Verbindungen und Axialkraft der Steinbolzen antiproportinal ist. Zweitens: Es wird herausge-funden, dass die am meisten Sensitiven der im BB-Modell angewendeten Eingaben die am Ende uebriggebliebenen Reibungswinkel sind. Und schliesslich wird herausgefunden, dass wenn Ver-bindungsteile an der Tunnelaushoelungsoberflaeche ausgemacht werden, fuer die Tunnelstabiltaet die Identifikation der meist kritischen Verbindungsorientierung sehr bedeutungsvoll.

SAMREC (The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves) Clause 7 notes that ‘Documentation detailing Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves from which a Public Report is prepared must be prepared by, or under the direction of, and signed by a Competent Person.’ Similar statements with respect to Competent Valuators (CVs) and Qualified Reserves Evaluators (QREs) are contained in the SAMVAL (South African Code for the Reporting of Mineral Asset Valuations) and SAMOG (South African Code for the Reporting of Oil & Gas Resources) codes respectively. What does it mean to be a Competent Person (CP) in the context of compiling/signing-off on SAMCODE (South African Mineral Code) compliant documents? What do the registration and experience requirements mean? Who is ultimately responsible for the report and what does such responsibility prescribe?

Methods based on regionalized variables theory, commonly known as geostatistics, have been widely used since more than three decades to predict/estimate spatial distributed data, namely mineral resources, with quite good results. However, some restrictive theoretical assumptions, such as the need of some kind of stationarity of data and the linearity of the predictor/estimator, are often wrong options in many applications. An alternative approach based on a finite mixture modelling, or cluster weighted modelling (CWM) technique, is presented and compared, in its theoretical and practical aspects, with the geostatistical methodology. CWM is a general non-linear framework based on the estimation of joint density functions allowing the calculation of the conditional probability function of the target values given their locations. Validation tests are performed in a 2D case study, where testing data proceeds from a soil contaminated by a heavy metal. The results of ordinary kriging and CWM estimations show a very good agreement with actual data. Improvement of post tap hole practices is achievable by mechanized handling of melt during the production of Ferro Chrome, resulting in higher recovery of chromium. The paper deals with modern practices adopted in the production of ferro-chrome since past two decades. The methods and practices deal with various areas : a) Improved method of operating the tap hole by selection of right quality of refractory to maintain the life of tap hole. b) Collection of melt in different types of receptacles like refractory brick lined mild steel ladles, cast steel ladles, cast iron pans being chosen for cost effective and efficient handling. c) Separation of slag and metal, casting of metal, crushing, sizing and stock piling etc. d) Slag disposal and recovery of entrapped metal. The drive behind the above development is continuous improvement, which results in higher chromium recovery and reduces loss of metal in slag by completely mechanized method so as to be at the same level with producers of ferro-chrome in other advanced countries , in the emerging global economy.

Treatment of tailings is an integral component of mineral processing. Tailings with a high clay content are a challenge for the mineral processing industry; e.g. the clay slimes produced from production of phosphate in the mid-western United States and the fine tailings produced from oil sands production in western Canada. Dispersants are a commonly used process aid, but their impact on the structure and settling properties of high clay content tailings is not well understood. The paper describes the changes in composition and bitumen release that occur when mature fine tailings (MFT) are treated with a polymeric dispersant (lignosulfonate.) Synchrotron-source computed tomography (CT) was used to obtain high-resolution 3D images of samples prepared at varying dosages of dispersant. The CT method permits a powerful visualisation of the internal structure and composition of the samples. These insights will enhance our understanding of the structural characteristics of mineral tailings relevant to solid-liquid separation by flocculation and thickening. ABSTRACT. A retrospective analysis of some geomechanical classifications for rock masses is presented. It is shown that estimates of rock mass strength according to geomechanical classifications developed, e.g., for construction of tunnels and for ore mines can differ very much. Development of specifically oriented classifications for rock masses with certain geomechanical properties is required. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG. Es wurde eine retrospektive Analyse einiger geomechanoschen Klassifikationen von Gesteinsmassiven durchgefuhrt. Es idt aufgezeigt worden, dass die Bes-timmung der Festigkeit des Massivs nach geomechanischen Klassifikationen, die z.B. fur den Bau von Tunnelen und fur Erzbergwerke entwickelt wurden, sich um etliche Male unterscheiden kann. Es ist eine Entwicklung von spezialisierten Klassifikationen fur Gesteinsmassive mit bestimmten geomechanischen Eigenschaften erforderlich. RESUME. Il a ete fait l’analyse retrospective de certaines classifications geomecaniques des massifs de roche. Il a ete montre que les estimations de solidite du massif suivant les classifications geomecaniques etudiees, par exemple, pour la construction des tunnels et pour les puits de minerai peuvent differer en quelques fois. Il est donc necessaire d’etudier les classifications specialisees pour les massifs aux proprietes geomecaniques particulieres.

The mechanism of the flow of tailings slurry is examined, and a mathematical model is derived to describe the flow. Predictions based on the model are then compared with the flow that actually occurred near the shaft at Bafokeng after the No. I tailings dam had failed. The predictions are found to be of acceptable accuracy.

There are two main types of densifying cyclones currently available in the market, namely polyeurethane (PU) and ceramic. The PU densifying cyclones are currently used throughout the Grootegeluk complex and coal beneficiation in general. It has been identified that PU densifiers wear relatively fast depending on the operating pressure and need to be replaced frequently as a result. The motivation for this paper is to achieve an increase in the densifying cyclone lifetime through less wear and an increase in efficiency resulting in the ability to build higher relative densities (RD) more quickly. This will allow for a reduction in downtimes due to replacing densifying cyclones as well as building RD and a reduction in the operating costs associated with replacing worn densifying cyclones. Some of the major findings of the study indicated that the ceramic cyclone theoretically undergoes less wear than the PU cyclone, but since wear is application-specific and was evaluated, the wear on the polyurethane cyclone was found to be minimal. The RD differential is higher on the PU cyclones than the ceramic cyclones, showing that the PU cyclones perform better in a densifying application. This is the first test conducted on this application and type of cyclones. It should therefore be noted that having the PU cyclone significantly outperform the ceramic cyclone was not expected, due to the only change being the material of construction. This is an indication to take the material of construction into account when selecting cyclones as it can have a significant impact on the cyclone performance in specific applications. In situ leaching tests with thiourea as the lixiviant were caried out in two worked-out stopes at the No. 6 shaft at Rand Leases Gold Mining Company. Dissolution rates of 0,9 and 0,7 9 of gold per week per 100 m2 of footwal area were achieved. A major disadvantage of the method seems to be the slow rate of dissolution of the gold, which is probably caused by poor contact and slow mass transfer between the lixiviant and the gold surfaces. Under full-scale application, the loss of lixiviant by leakage could also be a very important factor. Furthermore, the oxidation products of thiourea may 'poison' the activated carbon that is used for the recovery of the gold. The method may therefore be economically viable only in stopes that contain high values of residual gold.

Four 22%Cr series duplex stainless steels alloys containing varying nickel contents of approximately 5, 7, 9 and 13% were melted in a vacuum induction furnace, hot rolled, solution annealed and water quenched. Their corrosion behaviour was investigated in sulphuric acid and sodium chloride solutions using a potentiodynamic polarization technique. Increasing nickel contents have appreciable influence on their corrosion behaviour. Polarization curves show similarities in the uniform corrosion behaviour of the alloys in the solutions and a significant difference in their pitting behaviour in chloride environments. Alloy 2209 generally exhibited highest resistance to uniform corrosion while 2213 displayed distinct and best pitting corrosion resistance. Their corrosion behaviour were attributed to the influence of nickel on phase modification, microstructural refinement, and the probably types of films formed in different environments. The wear of steel pipelines used for the transportation of backfill slurries is frequently regarded as an erosion problem only. An investigation was undertaken of the likely contribution to the total 'wear rate' made by corrosion. Use was made of a pipe flow loop with catholically protected specimens and corrosion inhibitors. Laboratory electrochemical tests utilizing a rotating-cylinder electrode were also conducted. The slurries used were classified tailings from two mines at a relative density of 1,7. The velocities were between 2 and 4,9 m/s. Substantial decreases in the wear rate of up to 80 per cent for one slurry and up to 67 per cent for the other were obtained with the use of corrosion control, showing that corrosion and, more importantly, interaction between erosion and corrosion, contribute a significant portion of the overall wear in steel pipelines

The investment decision under uncertainty by H. M. WELLS, Pr. Eng., M.Se. (Fellow) The future outcome of a proposed investment is uncertain at the time the decision must be made to accept it or reject it. This uncertainty can be expressed in the form of a probability distribution. An attempt is made to rationalize the investment decision under these circumstances, especially when the range of possible outcomes extends into both the acceptable and unacceptable domains. A rigorous definition of risk is proposed, and a criterion of risk aversion is developed that forms the boundary between acceptable risk and unacceptable risk (called the loss limitation line). It is shown that this decision criterion can also serve as a quantitative yardstick in the evaluation of various possibilities for 'tailoring' the proposal to mlke it more compatible with the particular financial circumstances of the company concerned.

Ingot casting and wire drawing In Iron Age Southern Africa by R. H. STEEL (Visitor) This paper describes the experiments that were conducted in 1974/1975 on two related aspects of Iron Age copper technology in Southern Africa: ingot casting and wire drawing. Three types of ingot were successfully cast: the St Andrew's Cross ingot, the marale ingot, and the musuku. It is suggested that the 'studs' on the musuku are not the remains of broken-off rods as previously proposed by other investigators, but that the ridged pattern is an ornamental feature. Copper wire was successfully drawn with similar tools and according to the procedures described in the literature on African Iron Age wire drawing. It is concluded that these accounts are generally accurate and that the pre-European metal workers are worthy of respect for the results they achieved with primitive methods.

The Institute was founded in 1894 as the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence. Membership benefits include monthly issues of the Journal of the Institute, monthly General Meetings at which papers are read, symposia, excursions to mining and industrial concerns and the use of club facilities at Kelvin House. Technical journals received on an exchange basis are available to members at the Johannesburg Public Library. The current membership of the Institute is over 1,600. Membership applications are accepted from suitably qualified persons and the requirements for entrance to the various grades of membership are summarised below. Fellows shall not be less than 30 years of age, shall be university graduates in pure or applied science or shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the Council that they have successfully completed a co-ordinated course of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution deemed by the Council to be of equivalent status. Members shall have been employed in senior technical positions in important mining or metallurgical undertakings for at least five years or they shall have practised as mining or metallurgical consultants for at least five years. They shall be practising their profession at the time of application. Entrance fee R10.00, Annual subscription RI7.00. Letters of designation: F.S.A.I.M.M. Members shall be not less than 25 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or shall have successfully completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration. They shall have been engaged in work of an approved technical character in the mining or metallurgical industries, of which not less than two years shall have been in positions of responsibility. A candidate shall be practising his profession at the time of his application. Entrance fee R8.00, Annual subscription RI5.00. Letters of designation: M.S.A.I.M.M. Associates shall be not less than twenty-five years of age, and shall have been engaged in positions of responsibility in, or associated with, the mining or metallurgical industries for periods of not less than three years. If, however, the candidate for admission to the higher grade of Associate, is at the time of his application, already a Student, he need satisfy the Council only that he is, at the time of his application, engaged in a position of responsibility in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries. In all cases the applicants shall satisfy the Council that they are fit and proper persons to become Associates. Entrance fee R8.00, Annual subscription R15.00. Graduates shall be not less than 21 years of age and shall be university graduates in pure or applied science, or have completed co-ordinated courses of study in pure or applied science of at least three years' duration at an approved university or institution. They shall not remain Graduate members after attaining the age of 30 years without the permission of Council. Entrance fee R2.00, Annual subscription R10.00. Students shall be persons not less than 18 years of age who are being educated or trained in a manner approved by the Council, to occupy a technical position in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries and who, furthermore, shall not have attained the qualification required for a higher grade of membership. They may remain Students until they have obtained the necessary qualifications for transfer to a higher grade of membership, but not after the end of the Institute's financial year in which they attain the age of 28 (twenty-eight) years. They shall then transfer to a higher grade to retain membership of the Institute. The Council may relax the provisions of this clause in such cases as it considers appropriate. The Council has the power to elect to the grade of Fellow or Member, candidates who may not fulfil all the requirements for entrance to these grades but whose status, professional achievements and practical experience in mining or metallurgy justify such election.
