OosterveldIn opening the session, the Chairman indicated that the papers and discussions would revolve about quantitative methods of analysis and optimization of various aspects of exploration planning. The five papers would cover a wide range of topics within a general theme of exploration analysis, and it would be appropriate, therefore, to present the. papers as representing a sequential information-gathering process, namely, (i)geochemical and geophysical types of surveying for the location and identification of anomalous zones, (ii) tren¬ching and drilling of the anomalous zones found, and (iii) further refinement of the data for ore reserve calculations and production planning.The first paper, which was presented by Dr W. A. Hodgson, dealt with the optimum spacing between soil sample traverses conducted during geochemical prospecting. The theme of the paper was that the critical sampling interval should be based on the concept of element continuity, and that this interval could be determined by means of a correlogram. Ensuing discussion concerned the probability of the method, designed for areas where dispersion was high, working in localities where dispersion was either low or virtually non-existent. In the latter eases, specific orientation surveys for varying topographic, climatic and geological conditions would possibly be more useful than the preparation of correlograms. A further suggestion was made that cost versus risk should be taken into consideration when deciding upon the spacing between traverses. A balance could be struck by mathematical optimization. If the exploration budget was fixed, then the variance of risk could be minimized.The second paper was a short contribution by Mr C. J. Lenz. Computer-based plotting and evaluation of geochemical prospecting results were carried out because the low cost of analysis in Rhodesia permitted very large volumes of data to be accumulated in mass-coverage operations. Anomalous areas were demarcated within different environments by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. In the short discussion which took place it was debated whether the method should be used only in the early high-risk stages of geochemical exploration and whether the introduction of geological bias could influence the actual results of an exploration program."

The paper explains the main effects of input leaching parameters, such as addition of a reducing agent, acidity, agitation, temperature, and leaching system potential, in relation to observed and predicted yields of sought-after cobalt. An artificial neural network coupled with graphical probability networks was developed wherein the abovementioned input parameters were used to predict the percentage of dissolved cobalt. Furthermore, similarities and differences between the Bayesian and neural network approaches in terms of their key outcomes are compared with respect to study of the dissolution of cobalt in sulfuric acid. Key results indicate that there is a need to use neural network results to predict conditions for dissolution of cobalt, while using Bayesian network to explain inferences about conditions of the input parameters, thereby achieving realistic predictions.

The leaching kinetics of cerium (Ce) and yttrium (Y) in sodium-hydroxide-digested non-magnetic coal fly ash using acetic acid were investigated. The variables analysed were pH, solid-to-liquid ratio (S/L), and temperature. The results show that cerium and yttrium's maximum recovery was 57.33% and 58.36%, respectively, under leaching temperature of 90°C for Ce and 60°C for Y at pH of 1,74 and 10 g/mL solid-liquid ratio in 240 minutes. Increasing the leaching time to more than 120 minutes did not significantly improve the results. After the magnetic separation process, the ICP-OES analysis shows a slight increase in the concentration of cerium and yttrium on nonmagnetic components. The XRD and ICP-OES analysis for the sample before and after silicate digestion shows that 40% silicate was dissolved. The calculation of apparent activation energies of leaching using the Arrhenius law for the leaching of cerium and yttrium gives 22.72 kJ/mol and 35.84 kJ/mol, respectively. The kinetic leaching model of cerium and yttrium all fit Dickinson's new shrinking core model. The calculation results show that the leaching reaction is controlled by combining interface transfer and diffusion across the product layer.

The estimation of some properties of South African coals from proximate analyses by J. W. de KOCK, Pr. Eng., Ph.D. (Chem. Eng.) Cantab. (Fellow) and J-P. FRANZIDIS, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Correlations have been obtained whereby calorific values, ultimate analyses, and Hardgrove Indices can be estimated from proximate analyses of South African coals. This has been done by the application of stepwise multiple linear-regression analyses of a mass of data published by the Fuel Research Institute.

On 18th November, 1991, the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, held a display of posters to review their R & D activities. Although not a new concept, this series of presentations was the first time that the Department of Chemical Engineering at Wits had undertaken as comprehensive a review in this particular format. It turned out to be a most worth-while exercise, and the many visitors must have been impressed with the quality of the presentations.

In a former Spotlight articlet, Dr P. J. D. Lloyd focused attention on the shortage of locally trained mining and metallurgical graduates, and indicated that the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) has been exerting pressure to boost the intake of undergraduates in mineral disciplines. This article reviews the recruiting activities of the South African minerals industry over the past decade, and discusses some of the programmes that are in operation at the moment, particularly those aimed at potential graduates.

South Africa’s mining and metals industries have an illustrious history dating back to the Late Iron Age. We live in a complex and data-intensive world that has already fundamentally changed how we work and live. The outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in immeasurable suffering worldwide, but the crisis also accelerated many technological developments and altered the way we think about, and experience, technology and work. Problem-solving requires new and rapidly changing skills to manage the data tsunami. Whether at the rock face or on the processing plant, the fundamentals have not changed, although how we interact with minerals and their properties has changed dramatically. Sustainable processing and design are non-negotiable if we genuinely want to achieve the aim of the cradle-to-cradle principle. As we venture forth, what can scientists, engineers, technologists, and mathematicians learn from history? History is data presented in a context; sometimes, the context is also important. We exist in an age of data, with most of the world’s data created in only the past two years. History can enhance our understanding of the present and enhance our future outcomes. Lessons from history can help provide insights into making ethical and sustainable choices related to technology or engineering in the mining and metallurgical industry. Shifting the perspective of mining and metallurgy professionals from a narrow focus on complex technical solutions towards a broader context for problem-solving and designs that includes the entire ecosystem is crucial. In other words, using or reflecting on historical process development is, at its core, systems thinking.

As real-time air quality monitoring becomes more prevalent in US underground mines, it is important to provide the highest data reliability with the fewest possible sensors. Real-time sensors remain costly, and these costs are not exclusively financial; the time required to install, calibrate, and maintain real-time sensors poses a large barrier to widespread implementation. Current atmospheric monitoring systems typically rely on displaying point-specific values. This requires operators to infer real-time airborne contamination distributions. Monitoring and control software utilizing mine ventilation network (MVN) solvers has been implemented in limited cases because of their ability to simulate ventilation systems quickly, but these solvers use a one-dimensional representation of the mine, limiting spatial resolution of estimated distributions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has likewise been considered as a means to improve spatial resolution, but processing times prevent its use as a basis for monitoring and control. For the real-time monitoring of airborne contamination distributions, we propose a spatial interpolation method that can estimate the distribution of airborne contaminants in near-real time. This method provides a middle ground between fast processing times and increased spatial resolution. With the use of a pathfinding algorithm and optimization through absolute percentage error minimization, this method outperforms spatial interpolation with a Euclidean distance. By providing contamination distribution information to operators, this method and its derivatives stand to outperform current atmospheric monitoring systems.

Most mine safety initiatives in South Africa are doomed to limited success because of one simple fact: they are a-historical and un-cultural and do not deal with the serious ?legacy issues? that still negatively impact on safety, production, and relationships. We in the SA mining industry continually use imported, foreign safety concepts and systems that will not work fully in a South African context. ?The 4th Wave: Culture-Based Behavioural Safety?, as developed by Lance Bloch, an international award-winning clinical psychologist with 12 years? experience in the mining industry - focused mostly on Platinum - is making waves. He has been very successful in creating people-centred, empowered, high-performance safety cultures wherever he has worked. Not only does the 4th Wave transform the corporate culture of a mine, improving safety and production and building an environment of Ubuntu, but it also uses people?s cultures as a means of winning hearts and minds in the battle for safe production. Powerful relationships are built through engagement at all levels, leading to all being focused on the best needs of the company and its constituents as a whole. The programmes are no less than nation-building - something most necessary in the industry, with the pressures from community, unions, the DMR, and politicians. This presentation will describe and discuss the 4th Wave as an advance on previous safety technology and programmes, as particularly relevant to platinum mining in South Africa today.

Mining companies are required by law to improve representation of women on their boards. However, progress in this regard has been slow. Boards of directors play an important role in formulating corporate strategy, risk assessment, and effective governance for sustained financial performance. Although some women have successfully maintained board seats, others have been unable to do so. It is difficult to ascertain whether women are being appointed as tokens to satisfy social pressures, as little is known about the experiences of women board members in mining, which may inform or refute tokenism. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women and 16 men across six listed mining companies. Thematic data analysis revealed evidence of tokenism where recruitment to mining boards is compliance-based and is informally driven by influential directors. Adverse boardroom experiences that further confirmed tokenism were reported by women, such as disregarding their contributions, condescending behaviour, and limited influence in decision-making, while other women sought to validate their competence and oppose social exclusion. This study recommends that a strong Board Chair and nominations committee is critical to ensure sustainable recruitment of competent and suitably qualified women; and further foster a culture of inclusivity and valuing gender-diverse boards.

"SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. "The complete and successful closure of a mine in the South African environment remains problematic. Closure remains an elusive mining phase due to unclear roles and responsibilities, inaccurate closure management data, and the inability of stakeholders to conceptualize and integrate closure information into business processes. Currently there are no proven methods available to address the complexities encountered during a closure application, and to date no mine has been granted full closure. Many mines are left abandoned and unrehabilitated, resulting in risk to investors, surrounding communities, and regulators. This investigation aimed to determine, categorize, and rank reasons for unsuccessful mine closures. Focus groups consisting of public and private stakeholders were identified and surveyed through a structured, rank-order questionnaire to determine the relative importance of reasons why achieving formal and final mine closure remains elusive. Various requirements and aspects were identified and listed according to four categories: namely, primary, secondary, process drivers, and information sources. These aspects should be considered in the development of an integrated mine closure model.Background and rationalePrior to 1956, mine closures were not subject to legislative requirements, being merely governed by insufficient environmental regulations under the Mines and Works Act 27 (MWA) (Swart, 2003). In 1981 the Chamber of Mines (COM) published a document titled ‘The rehabilitation of land disturbed by surface coal mining’, which constituted the first notable contribution to environmental protection. This guideline was later referenced in the Minerals Act of 1991, which for the first time laid definite environmental burdens on the Mining Right Holder (MRH). The Minerals Act of 1991 was superseded by the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act Regulations (MPRDAR), which specify a regulatory process for mine closure applications and financial provisions."

An investigation was carried out to determine whether a numerical model could be constructed that would produce results that realistically represent actual ground deformations in and around a vertical shaft. The ground deformation was brought about by the partial extraction of the shaft pillar. A special characteristic of the rock masses, affected by the shaft pillar extraction, was that the shaft was located in poor quality rock masses. After the extraction of a portion of the shaft pillar, excessive deformations occurred at the shaft/reef intersection. Therefore, a decision was taken to extract the entire shaft pillar protecting the shaft by a proposed waste-cut across the shaft. The effects of stress and displacement on the shaft were investigated by using inelastic numerical modelling in different stages. A calibrated numerical model was constructed producing modelled results comparable to the actual displacements along the shaft. Des recherches ont été poursuivies pour déterminer si on pouvait construire un modèle numérique qui donnerait des résultats représentant avec réalisme les déformations réelles du terrain à l’intérieur et autour d’un puits vertical. La déformation du terrain était entraînée par l’extraction partielle du massif de protection. Une caractéristique spéciale des masses rocheuses, affectées par l’extraction du massif de protection, était que le puits était situé dans des masses rocheuses de qualité inférieure. Après l’extraction d’une portion du massif de protection, des déformations excessives se sont produites à l’intersection du puits avec le filon. Par conséquent, la décision a été prise d’extraire le massif de protection en entier par une coupe de déblais à travers le puits. Les effets de contraintes et décalage furent étudiés en utilisant une modélisation numérique inélastique à des stages différents. Un modèle numérique calibré fut construit, donnant des résultats modelés comparables aux décalages réels le long du puits. Eine Untersuchung wurde durchgeführt um festzustellen, ob ein numerisches Modell konstruiert werden könnte, das Resultate produzieren würde, welche realistisch aktuelle Bodendeformationen in und um einen vertikale Schacht darstellen. Die Bodendeformation resultierte teilweise aus der Extraktion des Schachtpfeiler. Eine spezielle Eigenschaft der Gesteinsmassen, beeinflußt durch die Schachtpfeilerextraktion, war, daß der Schacht in Gesteinsmassen geringer Qualität situiert war. Nach der Extraktion eines Teils der Schachtpfeiler, traten übermäßige Deformationen am Schacht/Riff Kreuzungspunkt auf. Folglich wurde die Entscheidung getroffen, die gesamten Schachtpfosten zu extrahieren und den Schacht mittels eines geplanten Verlustschnittes quer zum Schacht zu schützen. Die Auswirkungen des Druckes und der Versetzung auf den Schacht wurden unter Anwendung unelastischer numerischer Modelle in unterschiedlichen Stadien untersucht. Ein kalibriertes numerisches Modell wurde konstruiert, welches berechenete Ergebnisse mit den tatsächlichen Versetzungen entlang des Schachtes vergleicht.

Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

One highly relevant challenge in flotation is the recovery of fine particles. Due to their low inertia, these particles are mostly pushed aside by rising bubbles. Consequently, they typically exhibit low probability for bubble-particle collision and thus, a poor recovery rate. In this work, the trajectories of fine particles in the vicinity of rising bubbles were investigated. The measurements considered a chain of millimetric bubbles in a rectangular container filled with deionized water. The flow field near the bubbles was measured by tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV), employing fluorescent tracer particles of 33μm diameter. Subsequently, trajectories of larger particles and bubble-particle collision events are recorded with 4D particle tracking velocimetry using a high temporal and spatial resolution. The results reproduce the well-known collision of particles on the leading edge of a rising bubble. Additionally, collisions on the tailing edge were observed in cases with a low Stokes number. The TPIV results demonstrate, that the high turbulent kinetic energy in the bubble wake allows particles to divert from the fluid streamlines and collide with the tailing edge of the bubble. The tailing edge collision probability increases with the bubble Reynolds number and decreased particle inertia. Overall, the investigation shows that the collision of fine particles in the bubble wake should be considered for the development of further collision probability models. Furthermore, the importance of turbulence on the fine particle flotation was demonstrated. Open pit slope stability analyses for large scale instabilities are often carried out using limit equilibrium, finite element or finite difference computer programs. All of these require empirical estimates of rock mass shear strength when calibrated values are not available, which is a common occurrence. A common method of estimating rock mass shear strength is the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which often over- or underestimates rock mass shear strength when used in limit equilibrium or elastic linearly plastic slope stability analyses, resulting in published alternative estimates for the coefficients of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. This paper investigates the differences between limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic slope stability analysis based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The investigation consisted of a comparison of 3840 RS2 finite element analysis models completed with strain softening, and 216 Slide2 limit equilibrium models. The models were used to evaluate a methodology to determine equivalent limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic shear strength parameters that provide the same stable slope angles and instability back break distances as the more representative strain softening stress analysis methods. This paper presents the methodology and compiles the results into design charts and equations for equivalent limit equilibrium Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters, that simplify calibration against actual case studies. The results compare well with older empirical shear strength estimates, however, a detailed calibration of the results against case studies will need to be carried out. The analysis also did not consider pore pressure effects; this is left for future publication.

The beneficiation equipment under the control of plant metallurgists exploits the differences in the physical properties between valuable and waste mineral components. In many cases, laboratory results are too late for process control and can only serve the purpose of "post" reports, the calculation of a mass balance and the issue of a quality certificate. As a result, experienced operators regularly adjust separation equipment based on the colour and texture of the various product streams in the beneficiation plant. Metallurgists quickly learn to recognise the different minerals in their ore body. The stereo microscope has been a valuable tool used by operators to quantify known mineral species. For many years it was the only practical method available for the purpose of process control and even for quality contro1. The modem spectroscope is far superior to the human eye and can rapidly detect a change in mineral composition. New generation optical scanners and digital signal processors can provide useful signals, related to mineral composition that can readily be applied for the purpose of process control. Successful case studies, covering dry in-line and slurry applications as well as in-plant fast spot analysers are presented.

(Member) The paper outlines some of the views on the relationship between work attitudes and performance, and examines evidence derived from relevant research done in the mining industry. It is suggested that higher productivity within any given system of mining can be attained if attention is paid to the four factors that represent the CORE of human work performance: Competence, Opportunity (or Organisation), Recognition (or Rewards), and Expectations (or Enrichment).

Electrolytic precipitation of ammonium diuranate by A. W. BRYSON. Ph.D. (Member) Continuous precipitation of ammonium diuranate from a solution of uranyl sulphate and ammonium sulphate in the cathode compartment of an electrolytic cell has been investigated. It is found that the rate of precipitation and the settling rate of the precipitate can be correlated with the current consumed per unit volume of catholyte solution. The weight fraction of uranium in the dried solid product appears to be constant over the range of operating conditions used.

Brigadier Ralph Shelton Griffin Stokes D.S.O., C.B.E., M.C., who died in England on 24th February, 1979, at the age of 96 years, was one of the most colourful personalities in South African mining history. After the South African War, in which he served as a trooper, he joined the Crown Reef Mine as an assistant assayer (1902), and was to serve the mines of the Corner House Group intermittently for the next 57 years until his retirement in 1959.
