General expressions for evaluating various thermodynamic properties applicable to the van der Waals equation of state have been derived. These formulas were subsequently used to evaluate various thermodynamic functions in the two-phase region. The results indicate that, for a van der Waals fluid, there is a finite discontinuity in the second derivative of the vapor pressure curve, in the second derivative of the chemical potential or Gibbs free energy at the critical point, and in the heat capacity at constant volume measured at the critical density. Numerical values are tabulated and graphs are presented for all functions calculated.

"Research on the control of exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres is conducted in five areas; 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The distribution of research findings to the mining industry, to government agencies, and to scientists at other universities is accomplished in several ways.A data bank of respirable dust samples displaying a wide range of characteristics (low volatile, medium volatile, high volatile, silica fireclay, rockdust) has been established by the Center. This data bank is being utilized by Center researchers in a suite of medical, scientific, and engineering tests (FIGURE 26).The Center has honored requests for educational and informational materials from several sources, including MSHA and CANMET who received information on Center generated software and used the Center's expertise in developing a computer program for particle distribution model (DISFIT).The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust has organized two dust conferences on respirable dust, the Coal Mine Dust Conference, held at West VirginiaUniversity, Morgantown, West Virginia from October 8-10, 1984 and Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries: Health Effects, Characterization and Control, an international symposium on Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania from October 14-16. 1986. These conferences were co-sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Mine Safety and Health Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). On August 23-26, 1988, the VIIth International Pnuemoconioses Conference was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While not a sponsor of this conference, researchers in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust had significant participation with sixteen (16) papers presented (see Volume 8 of this series for abstracts and papers). These conferences provided a significant forum for the exchange of ideas on dust research and the interchange of research findings. The proceedings from these conferences are available from NTIS and ACGIH.In sum, significant benefits to mine worker health have resulted and should continue to result from the synergistic scientific, engineering, and medical research in respirable dust (FIGURE 27). As always, an important objective is the rapid dissemination of the results of this research to industry. Video tapes and the Bureau's Technology News series have been a very effective means of USBM technology transfer. Data released by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis show continued gradual change in the real GNP's rate of growth in 1984, which has eased from an annual growth rate of 10.1 percent in the first quarter lo 7.1 percent in the second quarter, and then to 2.7 percent in the third quarter. The automobile industry strike in the last half of September had only a small effect, estimated at less than a 0.1 percentage point reduction in the growth rate. Among the components that comprise the GNP, personal consumption and fixed investment grew at lower real rates in the third quarter than in the second quarter, while net exports decreased. Personal consumption expenditures increased $0.4 billion in the third quarter, compared with an increase of $20.1 billion in the second quarter. Nonresidential fixed investment increased $3.9 billion in the third quarter, compared with $9.6 billion in the second quarter. The other component of fixed investment--residential investment--increased from $60.8 billion in the second quarter to $61.2 billion in the third quarter. Real net exports of goods and services decreased $1 1.3 billion in the third quarter, compared with a $3.1 billion decrease in the second quarter. Although exports increased from an annual rate of $144.7 billion to $150.2 billion, imports increased much more, from an annual rate of $1 56.2. billion to $172.8 billion (table 1).

Projects aimed at achieving the least disturbance to the Nation's air, water, and land resources in the mining and utilization of coal continued to be a feature of the Bureau of Mines coal program. This reflects the current concern about damage inflicted on the environment by our growing and increasingly affluent society. Mine Health and Safety research, along with investigations related to all other aspects of coal extraction and use, also continued to be implemented and expanded.

Against the receding background of the October stock market crash and the December overhang of inventories, the economy began with a shaky start in 1988. As 1988 began, the Administration's estimate of real growth for 1988 had just been reduced from 3.5% to 2.4% and economists and other ob-servers were concerned that the expansion that was 5 years old might be near the end and that a recession might be around the corner. The ensuing moderately strong economic activity, however, belied all the negative signals that were evident earlier, and the real GNP continued to grow at an estimated 2.3% annual rate during the first quarter of 1988, extending the ongoing recovery into the sixth year (table 1.). The relatively accommodative policy of the Federal Reserve Board (the discount rate was cut by 0.25% in January), a strong performance by the export sector, and the revival of consumer spending were major forces underlying the economic strength. But as the quarter drew to a close, signs of tight capacity utilizations were apparent in many of the export and capital goods sectors, including textile, chemical, plastic, metal, and machinery. Employment was at a record high level while the unemployment rate was close to a historical low. Prices were rising at a faster pace than those of 1987, and the dollar resumed its slide after a brief recovery in January and February. These factors gave rise to the fears of higher inflation. Long-term interest rates increased, casting a pall over the prospect of a robust growth for the rest of the year.

Zirconium, formerly distinctly a rare element, is rapidly becom- ing of rather extensive commercial importance. Economic features of the zirconium industry, together with general information regarding the metal and its compounds, are discussed in a separate paper, to which this paper is a supplement. In addition to giving a brief discussion of the four or five de- posits that so far have proved to be commercial sources of the element, this circular summarizes available data (including some hitherto unpub lished material from the files of the Bureau of Mines) upon other occur- rences, including many of scientific interest only, of the two commercial. minerals, zircon and baddeleyite, and also data upon some of the minor minerals, such as eudyalite and cyrtolite, which have attracted addition- al interest in recent years because they are frequently richer in hafnium than the more common zirconium minerals.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report chronicles the historical development of longwall mining in the United States and speculates on future developments to the turn of the century. The involvement and contributions made by the Bureau during these developments are also discussed. Two major periods of history are analyzed: (1) from 1875 to 1950 when small advancing faces were operated manually, and (2) from 1950 to 1990 when mechanized extraction and powered roof supports provided a system to efficiently extract large coal panels. Five eras of technological development during the modern period are described and analyzed. These eras discuss the development of (1) mechanized extraction, (2) powered roof supports, (3) high-capacity roof supports, (4) shield supports, and (5) system automation. Current trends are analyzed in terms of longwall utilization, face production, support capacity, face widths, and new technological developments. From these analyses, the future of longwall mining to the year 2000 is speculated. It is concluded that longwall mining will continue to grow in importance during the next decade and that the next major technological milestone will be the realization of a fully automated longwall mining system.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 547 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 340 samples were collected during calendar year 1967. The remaining 207 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting, permission to publish the results were not received until 1967. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. The Bureau of Mines has conducted this survey in the United States since 1917, and in 1965 it was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 516.4 Nine previous publications have been made to present results of 7,618 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1967. The first three, Bulletins 486,5 576,6 and 6177 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other six

"SUMMARY Data presented here indicate that freshly fractured silica exhibits surface characteristics and biologic reactivity distinct from aged silica, and on this basis we propose that these surface features may lead to enhanced manifestations of lung Injury. Grinding of silica produces ~10"" Si and SI-O (silicon-based) radicals per gram of dust on the particulate surface which are characterized by an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum centered around g = 2.0015. These silicon-based radicals react with aqueous media to produce OH radicals, which are demonstrable using a DMPO spin trap. The concentration of silicon-based radicals in silica decreases with aging in air and exhibits a half-life of ~30 h, whereas its ability to generate OH radicals in aqueous solution decreases with a half-life of ~20 h. However, on storage in aqueous media, the concentration of silicon-based radicals end the dust's ability to generate OH radicals decrease significantly within a few minutes. Freshly ground silica is also more biologically reactive than aged silica, because freshly crushed silica activates a greater respiratory burst In alveolar macrophages than aged silica, i.e., storage of ground dust in air decreases silica-Induced superoxide anion secretion, hydrogen peroxide release, and NBT reduction by 25%, 68%, and 43%, respectively. Furthermore, compared to aged silica, freshly ground silica exhibits a greater cytotoxic effect on cellular membrane Integrity, i.e., a 1.5-fold increase in LDH release from macrophages, a 36-fold increase in hemolytic activity, and a three-fold increase in the ability to induce lipid peroxidation. Because acute silicosis is frequently associated with occupations in which freshly fractured crystalline silica of respirable size is generated, the present study suggests that fracture-generated silicon-based radicals may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of this disease. Chronic silicosis becomes manifest 20 to 40 years after first exposure and is characterized by development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung with the de-velopment of dyspnea over a period of several decades. Acute silicosis, on the other hand, is manifested by a rapid on-set after exposure and is characterized by the accumulation of an amorphous granular lipoprotein exudate in the airspaces and rapid development of respiratory disability within a few years (1-3).Information is growing concerning the etiology of chronic silicosis. Studies sug-gest that several mechanisms may be in-volved in the development of fibrosis. Lung injury may result from silica-induced release of lysosomal enzymes from alveolar macrophages (4, 5). In ad-dition, silica-induced activation of su-peroxide anion and hydrogen peroxide release from alveolar macrophages may result in oxidant-induced damage to lung parenchyma (6). Silica exposure can also result in the release of mediators from alveolar macrophages which enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and the syn-thesis of collagen by these pneumocytes (7, 8)."

In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

This report describes exhaust-emission data from 10 diesel engines: six 4-cycle, direct-injection, naturally aspirated engines; two 4-cycle, direct-injection, turbocharged engines; one 4-cycle, precombustion-chamber, turbo-charged engine; and one 2-cycle, direct-injection engine. These engines were tested over a 3-year period (1968-70). Lowest emissions were obtained with a precombustion-chamber engine. Emissions from the 2-cycle, direct-injection engine fell within the range of emission rates for the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection engines. Excluding the precombustion-chamber engine and excepting one of the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated engines, carbon monoxide emission rates were about the same for all engines tested. Test data on smoke, odor, and emissions of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitro-gen, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes are given.

The rate of dissolution of U02 was measured in acid solutions similar to those used for in situ leaching, with S04 of 10-1.82 to 10-4 M, Fe(III) of 10-2 to 10-4 M and pH's of 1.1 to 2.3. The dependence of dissolution rate on pH was small and inconsistent, probably reflecting the combined effects of a very weakly polar oxidizing complex, probably FeSO4+, and a nearly neutral U02 surface. Differences in the state of the U02 surface may explain this variability as well as contrasts between these results and results reported in other work. Changing either S04 or Fe(III) concentrations significantly affects dissolution rates. Increasing low sulfate concentrations in solutions containing 10 2 M Fe(III) at pH 2 results in formation of FeSO4+. In such solutions, rates increased with (S04)/(Fe(III)) up to 1:30, thereby indicating that the oxidation of U02 by FeSO4 is more rapid than by Fe3+. However, the dissolution rate decreased at higher (SO4)/ (Fe(III)), due either to sorption of SO42- on the UO2 surface or to formation of other less reactive sulfate complexes such as Fe(S04)2 or FeHSO4+ However, Fe(III) concentration is the dominant factor in determining solution rates. The rate was directly proportional to ferric iron concentration, indicating that the rate-determining step of the dissolution reaction is a single-electron oxidation by a ferric complex. Dissolution rates were lower in solutions of 0.1 and 1.0% H202 (0.029 and 0.29 M) than at similar concentrations of ferric iron because of formation of an insoluble surface coating of uranium peroxide, UO4?4H20. This phase may limit the value of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant in lixiviants, not only by its very low solubility, but perhaps also by filling pores and reducing permeability in the ore body.

To say that the treatment and handling of the "fines" is the most difficult phase of coal preparation is probably an understatement of facts. It is the fine sizes from about 1/16-inch to 0 that are mainly responsible for the inescapable sludge and slurry problems at plants using wet methods of preparation. Sludge and slurry are a problem from the standpoints of both cleaning and dewatering. They cannot be cleaned satisfactorily by "gravity" methods, which are used so extensively on coarser Sizes, due to the fact that fine sizes, particularly from 65-mesh to 0, do not follow the same laws of settling as do the coarser sizes. Although fine sizes are cleaned more successfully on wet-wash tables than in jigs, even tables as usually operated in coal-preparation plants fail on sizes below 100-mesh. As to other phases of the, sludge and slurry problem, wet coal preparation plants are almost universally beset with troubles in connection with the recovery and dewatering of the fine sizes from about 14-or 20-mesh to 0. The sizes finer than 100-mesh further complicate the problems in a wet preparation plant by their tendency to stay in suspension and build up a troublesome load of solids in the circulating water. In order to prevent too much trouble from this source, it is, customary at most plants to bleed a fair-sized stream out of the circulating system continuously and replace it by addition of fresh make-up water. The slurry water withdrawn from the circuit is usually run to waste, in which case it carries with it a considerable amount of fine coal, thus increasing the "washer loss." Another evil results from wasted slurry water in that quite often it finds its way into creeks and larger streams, creating stream-pollution problems.

This course is intended for training those, usually the safety officers, who perform surveys fur inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas. The handbook entitled ?Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Coal Mining and Processing Work Areas? (NTIS #PB-243-35";) is used as a manual for the course and as a prime reference when performing the actual surveys or interpreting the sampling results. There are six experiments for the students to perform during the course to familiarize them with the sampling devices routinely used during the surveys.

"Part 1. REDUCTION AND USE OF OXIDANTSSUMMARYA study has been made of the volumetric determination of molybdenum by reduction in the Jones reductor, receiving the reduced solution in a mixture of ferric alum and phosphoric acid, and titrating with standard oxidizing agents. In addition to potassium permanganate, which has long been utilized for this titration, potassium dichromate and ceric sulphate have been found to be applicable. The latter oxidants have been found to be especially useful in the form of dilute solutions for the determination of small amounts of molybdenum. The tests revealed that certain internal indicators give excellent results in these titrations.Reason for These ExperimentsThe following study was initiated with the hope of providing the mining and metallurgical industries with an accurate and rapid technical method for the determination of molybdenum in such low-grade materials as ores, rocks, tailings, steels, and alloys containing less than 0.3 percent molybdenum. Although the experimental work was designed with this purpose in mind, many of the results are applicable to material containing a higher percentage of molybdenum.While the Bureau of Mines had an experiment station in Colorado, considerable analytical work was done on what were then (up to about 1923) classed as rare metals. One of these was molybdenum; and in Bulletin 212, Bonardi's (1) 3/ 60-page chapter covered all methods for the analysis of molybdenum."

This circular is part 2 of the third subject (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing; the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes. This paper discusses the use of the power scraper, slackline cableway excavator, and hydraulic monitor, and part 3 will discuss the use of various types of dredges. Subsequent papers in the series will discuss the use of haulage equipment, the application of both excavating and haulage equipment to various types of deposits, and operating costs. THE POWER SCRAPER The power scraper is a younger member of the various forms of gravel excavators. It is a mechanized enlargement of the slip scraper and other scrapers which depend upon animals for power and has a greater range of operation from a single set-up than any other excavation unit except the slackline cableway excavator.

To identify and characterize potential domestic chromium resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated podifom chromite deposits along the Border Ranges Fault in southern Alaska. Part 1 of this two-part report describes an extensive field investigation and preliminary resource evaluation studies by the Bureau's Alaska Field Operations Center. This paper, part 2, describes the mineralogy of 38 samples that were collected from low-grade deposits in the Chugach Mountains, on the Kenai Peninsula, and on Kodiak Island, and presents the results of laboratory batch beneficiation tests designed to concentrate the chromite. The samples are peridotites and chromites that consist primarily of variable amounts of chromite, olivine, and serpentine. They were beneficiated by a sequence of grinding, sizing, and gravity concentration operations. Twenty-four high-chromium or marginal high-chromium chromite concentrates, six high-iron or marginal high-iron chromite concentrates, and five submarginal concentrates were produced with chromium recoveries that ranged from 37 to 95 pct. Three very low-grade samples were not beneficiated. These results indicate that several of the de- posits may be significant chromium resources, Potential precious metals association with the chromite was also investigated. Analysis of these samples indicates that the chromite deposits are not good platinum sources.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. A symposium on the health hazards of respirable dust in the mining and milling of talc was held on May 8, 1973, in Washington, D.C. The results of medical effects on both human and animal subjects were presented. Methods for identification and classification of talc minerals were also presented. Analytical techniques discussed included X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope observation, electron probe, and optical microscopy.

Yields of ammonium sulfate obtained in the carbonization of coal frequently vary from plant to plant, because ammonia is an unstable compound at high temperatures and therefore sensitive, to changes in carbonizing conditions. Differences in byproduct yields of ammonium sulfate obtained at different plants generally are accounted for by variations in plant procedure, either in preparing the coal or in its carbonization. However, technicians of one large corporation,- which frequently obtained higher yields of ammonium sulfate in its Alabama plants than ever were attained in its Ohio plants, "could not reconcile the differences in yields with their plant operations. These investigators suspected that the Alabama, coal used in their southern plant yielded more ammonia because its composition differed inherently from that of the Pennsylvania and West Virginia coals fused in their Ohio plants, although this concept could not be proved readily in their large-scale operations. Their view is supported by experimental data obtained A Beau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization tests) -21 of a large number of coals including those carbonized commercially in Alabama and Ohio.
