Many injuries are caused each year by rock falls in coal mines. Most of these injuries are not caused by major roof collapses, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate top or roof skin. Various surface controls are used in mines to control this surface rock. One that has been found to be very effective is roof screening. Depending on the size of the screen, roof coverage approaching 100%can be achieved. Many mines are reluctant to use screen for primary skin control because of additional costs of time and materials, but others are having great success at both controlling costs and surface rock. Data is presented from two mines that show a dramatic reduction in roof skin injuries when screening is used. Much of this success is due to innovations in roof bolting machines. Four case studies of roof screen experience are presented along with associated costs of materials, impact on bolting advance rates, and potential ergonomic risks. The effects of roof screening on skin control and safety are also included. Finally, this paper will provide information about features of different roof bolting machines that affect production and safety.

"The contemplated use of dichloro-difluoro methane in domestic and commercial refrigerating appliances and in air-conditioning equipment for Public buildings and possibly homes, brings attention to the health hazards involved in a wide potential exposure of the public to vapors of another new product, and for the first time to vapors of an organic fluorine compound. The objective in the development of this new refrigerant, however, has been the mitigation of health and explosion hazards in automatic refrigeration, and accordingly these factors have been given primary attention. Early in the development, the Bureau of Mines was requested to make a laboratory study of the toxicity and potential hazard:"" and it was on the basis of the results of this work and the results of a preliminary investigation made in another laboratory5 that the compound has been selected for commercial use. Although the investigation conducted by the Bureau of Mines is still in progress, information has been obtained to indicate the order of the toxicity and the magnitude of the health hazards involved in the use of dichloro-difluoro methane as a refrigerant. The following is a summarized report of the work completed to date:Additionally work rich is in progress at the present time includes a determination of the lethal time-concentration curve for animals and a study of the response of persons within the range of safe concentrations.The writers desire to jive acknowledgment to T E. The Olallie RARE II study area has volcanic cinder deposits with a sow potential for development. No mining claims or prospects are known within the study area, and except for common construction materials such as volcanic cinders and stone, no mineral deposits were identified. An evaluation of the geology indicates that metallic mineral deposits are unlikely to exist. No significant metallic concentrations were reported in samples from the area. The only resources in the study area are about 30 million cu yds (23 million cu m) of cinders in three cones. The cinder deposits in the study area cannot compete economically with enormous deposits of similar material in more accesible areas closer to markets. At the present rate of consumption, resources outside the area are adequate far into the future. The geothermal potential of the study area is being evaluated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

A study of the high magnification of some inorganic fibers which are found in nature or produced in the laboratory, has been conducted with the electron microscope. This series of electron microqraphs shows the important morphological differences exhibited by potassium-lead silicate, lead-aluminum silicate, chrysotile, wollastonite, silicon nitride, potassium titanate, cobalt chrysotile, magnesio-fluor-richterite, fluor-richterite, refractory oxide fiber, silicon carbide, massive serpentine, and palygorskite. A ribbon or a thin lath 250-2500 A. wide is the structural form of potassium-lead silicate and lead-aluminum silicate. Chrysotile, cobalt chrysotile, and massive serpentine all have a tubular structure and a fairly uniform (150-300 A.) diameter. Wollastonite, potassium titanate, fluor-richterite, and magnesio-richterite crystals have a lath shape, and potassium titanate laths are laminated ribbons. Single fibers of silicon nitride and palygorskite are ribbons, and the silicon nitride sample contains many twins (branching fibers). Palyqorskite fibers are highly flexible and have cross-sectional measurements of 150-300 A. Silicon carbide fibers differ from other fibers because their structure consists of several different forms. The sample used in this study had, predominately, a margarite-type structure. The refractory oxide fiber lost, all its apparent fibrosity after being prepared for electron microscopic examination, and only irregular fragments are visible in the electron micrographs.

"The handling and transportation of explosives and explosives supplies are inherently hazardous owing to their sensitiveness to impact and flame or electric arcs and sparks. Many accidents have occurred in the past during transportation of explosives, especially when they were carried by individual miners on man-trips. When electric haulage became the usual mode of transportation and shots were fired electrically, the hazards of carrying explosives and supplies on man-trips were fully realized, and in some mines all explosives were placed in one car, usually at the rear of the trip. Far-sighted managers saw the danger of this practice and provided separate trips for delivering explosives. This step was a definite advance in safety, but the latest achievement is the construction of special, rugged, nonconducting cars.Many coal-mining men have shown considerable interest in the construction of safe cars for explosives during recent months. Undoubtedly many others are interested in this phase of safety, therefore this circular is issued to give information on cars of this type now in use.Car A (fig. 1) is essentially a closed inner box separated from an outer box by an insulating lining of rubber. The double box is attached to a standard steel chassis that has spring journals and electric welding instead of certain rivets. The chassis is equipped with roller bearings. The over-all length from pin to pin is 11 feet, 9 inches; the wheel base is 54 inches, the track gage 42 inches, and the capacity eighteen 50-pound cases of permissible explosives. The box is 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, 3 feet high at the top of the arched roof, and 2 feet 9 inches at the edges. The top of the car is 46 inches above the top of the rail.The inner box is insulated from the outer box by two pieces of 1/4-inch switchboard.-insulating matting cemented together. To cover the top, two ends, two sides, and the bottom of the box requires 320 square feet of the l/4- inch matting.The walls are well-seasoned tongue-and-groove oak, 1 1/4 inches thick and 2 3/4 inches wide. A 1 1/4-inch air space is maintained by oak strips between the outer wall and the two thicknesses of 1/4-inch rubber matting. The inner box is made of 7/8-inch, well-seasoned, tongue-and groove oak fitted closely against the insulating matting. No nail, rivet, or bolt extends through the rubber insulation.The floor of the outer box is secured to the chassis by two sets of bolts through an intermediate piece of well-seasoned oak. One set of bolts is countersunk from the top of the intermediate piece of oak, and the other set is countersunk from the bottom. The countersunk portions are filled with ""insulate,"" an insulating compound. Adjacent bolts are at least 6 inches apart.The bed of the inner box is divided into six compartments by transverse strips of wood at the bottom and partitions near the roof. Each compartment accommodates three 50-pound cases of explosives. This arrangement prevents cases in adjacent compartments from touching, so that there is no possibility of end thrust of the entire load of explosives. Each inner compartment is 21 inches high, 5g inches long, and 16 1/4 inches wide. Separating strips at the floor are 3 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches thick. The outside dimensions of the 50-pound cases of explosives used are 17 1/2 inches long, 13 1/2 inches wide, and 12 1/2 inches high."

Coal miners often handle heavy electrical power cables, weighing up to 10 kg per meter. These cables are manually lifted and attached to the mine roof to prevent damage from mobile underground equipment. Data suggest that workers who commonly perform cable handling tasks experience a high rate of lost time back injuries. In this study, six male underground miners performed a total of 12 cable-hanging tasks in standing, stooping, and kneeling postures, during which kinematic and ground reaction force data were collected. Reductions in vertical work space were found to result in a linear increase in the peak moment experienced by the lumbarspine (p<0.05). In restricted postures, peak moments were not significantly different in stooping vs. kneeling postures (p>0.05). Average lumbopelvic flexion during the tasks was highest in stooping conditions, followed by standing and kneeling exertions (p<0.05). A U.S. Bureau of Mines study indicates over 200 million yd3 (153 million m3) of cinder resources occur in the Mount Washington Wilderness. No future demand for the deposits is anticipated. Based upon the geologic environment, the area is considered favorable for discovery of geothermal resources. INTRODUCTION The Mount Washington Wilderness, located about 32 mi (51 km) west of Bend, Oregon, contains 46,655 acres (18,881 ha) (fig. 1). A 6,300-acre (2,550-ha) addition on the northeast and east boundaries has been proposed by the Forest Service under RARE II. The U.S. Geological Survey made regional geological, geophysical, and geochemical surveys, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined, analyzed, and evaluated the economic potential of prospects and commercially important mineral resources.

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a new coal mine respirable dust sampling instrument that has the ability to provide accurate end-of-shift and real-time respirable dust exposure data. A hypothetical cost comparison analysis of the PDM with the current MSHA-required coal mine dust personal sampling unit (CMDPSU) was conducted. Some simplifying assumptions were made to create hypothetical cases for analysis. This analysis was limited to respirable dust sampling of one designated operator (DO) and one designated area (DA) for one mechanized mining unit (MMU) which operated one shift per day. Only sampling intervals of the minimum sampling as required by federal regulations and continuous sampling were analyzed. This cost analysis from the company perspective is only one part of an overall cost/benefit analysis that should be conducted at a later date. In this analysis, company-associated costs were examined for both sampling systems. Results show that the PDM, while it has high initial costs of approximately $12,600, may be a cost-effective sampling system for measuring coal mine respirable dust. The estimated present worth cost of conducting the minimum required dust sampling over a five-year life ranges from $5,850 to $19,000 for the CMDPSU, with the higher present worth cost including costs of potential violations incurred. For the PDM, the comparable present worth cost is $14,900 to $19,300, with the lower present worth cost representing a lower capital cost of $8,150 per unit if more than 850 units are produced per year, while the higher present worth cost reflects the result with the higher $12,600 capital cost.

This study was undertaken to determine miners&apos; breathing zone concentrations of diesel exhaust components, to investigate any relationships between these concentrations and vehicle type, the presence of emission controls, vehicle usage, and ventilation conditions, and to make recommendations for monitoring and ventilation requirements. Twenty-four mines including two con l mines were surveyed. Sampling was done for CON, NON, SOx, PNA, aldehydes, and particulates. hi most mines, concentrations of at least one contaminant exceeded one half the standard or TLV. The concentrations of gases arc probably sufficiently reduced by a minimum air velocity of 50 fpm. A sufficient reduction of particulate concentrations may require as high as 400 fpm air velocity. Vehicle age, type, or usage appear to have little or no effect on contaminant concentrations. PNA levels were below detection limits in all but a very few samples. Minimum requirements for routine monitoring should include formaldehyde, COx, NO2. It is further recommended that better definition of the minimum ventilation requirement be obtained.

In this paper, closed expressions have been obtained for the frequency spectrum of a Born-Karman square lattice in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic integrals. This work is part of continuing research by the Bureau of Mines with the thermodynamic properties of metals and minerals. Although other workers have obtained various types of approximations for the general case of the frequency spectrum of a square lattice, no one previously has obtained closed analytic expressions for this spectrum. To understand the optical and thermodynamic properties of crystals, several investigators have studied the distribution of frequencies of normal modes of vibration of the crystal lattice. Born and Karman3 laid the foundation for the theory of lattice dynamics and obtained detailed results for the case of a one-dimensional lattice. Blackman4 used numerical techniques to estimate the frequency distribution of a two-dimensional square lattice. Mbntroll5 analytically determined the frequency distribution of a square lattice for a particular value of the force constants. He also studied the more general problem and obtained some analytic approximations, using the method of moments. However, the calculations by this method were so difficult that it was not always practicable to carry them out. Longwall mines typically use some form of standing support for secondary roof support in longwall tailgate entries. Although there have been several new support products developed for this application, there remains no universal design criteria to optimize the application of these support technologies. The requirement for optimization and proper support selection is to understand the degree of control that the support has on the ground behavior. The ground reaction curve and numerical modeling was used to evaluate the impact of standing support on ground behavior. LaModel was used to evaluate the impact of standing support on main roof and floor behavior and pillar yielding. The conclusion drawn from this study was that standing supports do not have sufficient capacity to control main roof or floor loading or prevent the resulting convergence of the tailgate entry. However, it is imperative that this “uncontrollable convergence” be considered in the support design to prevent premature failure of the support. A FLAC model was used to evaluate the near-seam roof and floor behavior in conjunction with the global vertical and horizontal stresses. The model suggests that standing roof supports can have some impact on the ground behavior as the elastic response of the rock is exceeded and rock structure deteriorates from the stress concentrations that develop around the tailgate opening. During this phase, the capacity and stiffness of the standing support can be critical to the stability of the opening, as eventually the rock mass will be transformed into a partially detached structure whose weight must be supported by the standing support. This work is part of a ground control program of research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at improving mine safety by reducing roof fall injuries and fatalities.

In relation to dust, there are three categories of continuous miner faces depending on the type of ventilation and whether or not a machine-mounted dust scrubber is used. These are— 1. Mining machines with dust scrubbers used with blowing face ventilation 2. Mining machines with dust scrubbers used with exhaust face ventilation 3. Mining machines without scrubbers used with exhaust face ventilation The approach to dust control is somewhat different in all three of these. However, there are many dust control features (such as the need to provide adequate airflow) common to all continuous miner sections. For workers at roof bolter faces, there are two dust sources: 1. Dust from the continuous miner when it is upwind. 2. A malfunctioning dust collector on the bolter, which allows dust to escape DESIGN AND OPERATION OF MACHINE-MOUNTED SCRUBBERS [Almost all new continuous miners are equipped with scrubbers. When the dust is excessive, it is possible that the scrubber needs some maintenance.]

Preliminary economic mining feasibility studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to estimate mining costs in the Juneau gold belt area of the Juneau Mining District, southeastern Alaska. Investigations were conducted on the economics of two mineral deposit types: (1.) Berners Bay vein gold deposits, and (2.) stockwork gold deposits containing gold, silver, and lead. Cost estimates were developed using the Bureau of Mines Cost Estimating System (CES). Discounted cash flow return on investment (DeFROI) was calculated using the Bureau&apos;s MINSIM computer program. Underground mining of a Berners Bay vein gold deposit was found to be economic (15 pct DCFROI) at a recoverable metal value of $353.67/mt for a 100 mtpd shrinkage stoping mine with a 10 yr mine life, $324.76/mt for a 20 yr mine life, $138.63/mt for a 500 mtpd longhole stoping mine with a 10 yr mine 1 ffe, and $127.50/mt for a 20 yr mine life. Block caving mining of a large stockwork gold deposit was found to be economic at a recoverable metal value of $15.28/mt for a 18,000 mtpd mine with a 20 yr mine life.

Underground longwall mining of coal causes large scale disturbance of the surrounding rock mass. The disturbance can increase the rock mass permeability through a reduction on the stress as well as formation of new fractures in the rock. Methane gas contained in the disturbed rock mass can migrate towards the low pressure mine workings and present an explosion hazard. This paper describes the application of a finite difference program to develop a geomechanical model that predicts permeability changes within the rock mass. The calculated permeabilities are used as input to a reservoir simulator that models methane desorption from the coal matrix, methane release from the rock layers and flow towards the mine excavations. The model also considers the basic characteristics of the mine ventilation network. The geomechanical model uses empirical relationships between fracture permeability and stress to calculate permeability changes around a longwall face. The extent of rock failure is determined using a strain softening model that considers both rock matrix and bedding plane failure. The cave rock (gob) is modeled as a compressible, granulated material. The calculated horizontal and vertical permeabilities around the longwall face are averaged and used as one of the inputs to the reservoir model. The reservoir model was developed and calibrated against records of methane flow at a study mine in southwestern Pennsylvania. Good correlation between actual gas production and model outputs has been achieved. The modeling approach provides a basis for estimating methane inflow and optimizing control measures.

This marks the 100th year that the aggregate industry has been served by a national association. Of all the accomplishments this longstanding relationship has achieved, there is probably none greater than the progress made, in worker safety. Perhaps the best way to measure this success is to examine injury trends in the aggregate miner population. For example, in the first half of the 20th [ ] century, 16 quarry mining disasters (a "disaster" is an incident with five or more fatalities) claimed 157 miners between 1909 and 1952. The largest of these was the disaster at the Sandts Eddy Limestone Quarry near Allentown, Pa., on March 26, 1942, where 31 miners died of asphyxiation by fumes/explosion. Thankfully, no mining disasters have occurred in the aggregate industry since 1952. It is these kinds of information that help us characterize improvements in aggregate worker safety over the last 100 years.

Expansion measurements of platinum, added as an internal standard, are used for thermal calibration of X-ray cameras and diffractometers. Accuracy of the temperatures derived by this technique depends on the precision of expansion measurements and the reliability of reference expansion data. Temperature measurements to ± 1° C. require ?d or ?a to be determined within ± 0.001 percent. Selected expansion data are concluded to be reliable to 2° C., 5° C., and 25° C., over the temperature ranges 0° C. to 700° C., 700° C. to 1,000° C., and 1,000° C. to 1,700° C., respectively. Tabular expansion values from 25° C. to 1,700° C. in 2° C. intervals were calculated from the following equation; Expansion, percent = [8.91 + 1.28 x 10-3(t-25) + 0.04 x 10-6(t-25) ] [t-25.104 ] These tabular values facilitate future corrections of published temperatures as more reliable expansion-temperature data become available.

Methane monitoring at the mine face is essential to assure a safe work environment in underground coal mines. Machine-mounted methane monitors must be used to continuously monitor methane levels during mining. Monitors used on mining machines must be approved by MSHA and properly maintained to provide protection for workers (30 CFR 75.342). To provide protection the instrument must give accurate readings of current methane levels. Accuracy is maintained by calibrating the instrument with a standard gas at least once every 31 days. Instrument “response time” determines how quickly measurements will change to reflect current concentrations. At present there are no criteria for measuring the response time for a ma-chine-mounted methane monitor while underground. This study examined a procedure for measuring the response time of a machine-mounted methane monitor. Response times were measured using methanometers obtained from three different manufacturers. The effects of the measurement technique and methanometer sensor head design on response time measurements are investigated. Techniques for reducing variation in response time measurements are discussed.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. Large-opening mine ventilation is unique for the following reasons: (1) it is challenging to keep airflow velocities high enough to effectively remove or dilute airborne contaminants, (2) large air volumes can be moved through the mines with little static pressure drop, and (3) stoppings to direct ventilation airflows are costly to construct and maintain. The research results suggest that by incorporating ventilation planning into the mine planning process, using propeller fans, developing new stopping materials and construction methods, and using long pillars to eliminate crosscuts where possible, the ventilation of large-opening mines can be significantly improved. The ventilation improvements created by incorporating these various techniques into the ventilation plan will help reduce the exposure of mine workers to airborne contaminants in underground large-opening mines.

This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

"Petroleum engineering is a comparatively new branch of engineering, with which few people, even petroleum operators and mining engineers, are thoroughly familiar. Petroleum engineers are responsible for the accurate keeping of well logs and all pertinent data upon formations encountered, for the careful analysis of such information, and recommendations as to most suitable places for drilling, for detailed study of methods of drilling, casing, and so on in order to obtain maximum production for a minimum cost.The Bureau of Hines has from time to time carried on work in all branches of petroleum engineering in the various fields of the United States. Such work is also being carried on extensively by the California State Mining Bureau, which has in its employ a number of men who have had, besides their technical training, actual experience in oil field work. This is about the only state at the present time which is carrying on this work in a definite way. It has therefore been the practice of the employees of the Bureau of Mines to go to other states and give such advice and assistance as might prove of value in development work and in prolonging the production of the fields."
