In June 1933 the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, published a report of the gas at reserves in the Oklahoma City oil field3/ based upon data as of October 1932, at which time there were 43 classified gas wells in the field, The estimates were obtained by the ?porosity-area" method. There are two general methods of estimating natural-gas reserves. The porosity-area method, as used by Hill and Rawlins, is used when a gas field is comparatively new but after enough drilling has been done to determine the average thickness, porosity, and areal extent of the producing horizon. The "pressure-volume? method of estimating gas reserves, the method used in this report, nay be used after a sufficient volume of gas has bean withdrawn from the reservoir to cause an appreciable decline in reservoir pressure.

Calumet Division, Calumet & Hecla, Inc., whose operations are in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, Mich., is a highly integrated and complex organization. This division operates mines, a railroad, a concentrating mill, a reverberatory smelter, and the auxiliary generating plants and shops to service these operations. In addition, it operates a sands reclamation plant, leaching plants, a foundry, and a machine shop that serves varied industries with castings and parts for many applications. Calumet & Hecla, Inc. has produced over 60 percent of all the copper that has been produced in Michigan since discovery of the ore in 1864, and in 1959 the company ranked eight among the country's producers with a production of 17,407 tons. To keep abreast of modern accounting systems developed elsewhere in industry and to combat increasing costs due to higher labor and supply costs, as well as increased costs due to deeper mines and lower grade ore, the company has developed a modern machine cost accounting system. This not only provides the usual bookkeeping and cost accounting facilities but offers accurate cost data for engineering evaluation of the mining operation. This system is credited with being instrumental in permitting continued operation of these high-cost mines in a period of increasing costs with no corresponding increase in the price of metal.

"Refiners are generally considered solely as fuel producers, but actually they also comprise a group one of the largest consumers of fuel. For example, during the year 1929 the refineries-burned 51,544,000 barrels of oil as fuel, or the equivalent of over 5 per cent of the crude oil processed in that year. In addition enough other fuels - coal, natural gas, refinery or still gas, and petroleum coke - were utilized to raise the total fuel consumption based on B. t. u. equivalent to more than 10 per cent of the heat value in the total crude oil run to stills. Refineries utilize fuel chiefly as the heat-forming element distillation, but also under-boilers in the formation of steam used in refining, for the heating of buildings, and in the generation of electricity.In the early days of refining, the problem of fuel utilization and fuel economy was of scant importance to the refiners. Margins of profit were comparatively high and the major portion of the operatros1 attention was directed toward increasing their throughput. However, the keen competition that has prevailed in the refining industry over the past five years or more has taught the refiners that their expenses, one of the largest items of which is the cost of fuel, must be curtailed. Thus in 1925 the refiners used an average of 829,000 B. t. u. to refine a barrel of crude oil, wheras by 1929 this average had been reduced to 639,000 B. t. u., a decline of 23 per cent (see fig. 1)Since 1925 oil has ranked first as a refinery fuel (see fig. 2). The use of natural gas increased during 1926 and 1927 but declined in 1928 and 1929. On the other hand, the use of refinery gas has grown rapidly in importance. Coal has shown a steady decline in use at refineries since 1925. Petroleum coke has never supplied more than a very small fraction of the total fuel requirements, although there has been a steady increase in its use."

This paper, describing the concentration methods and costs of Witherbee, Sherman and Company at Mineville, N. Y., is one of the series of papers on milling methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. It deals principally with the production of high-grade concentrate. This report includes data for 1964 on injury experience, with related employment statistics, at coal mines in the United States. These data are presented in tabular form under the following headings: General Injury Experience Tables 1 to 6: Current data on number of injuries, degree of injury, frequency and severity rates, average severity, and related employment and production data by work location.

This report documents, from concept through field testing, the pan scraper Wheel Slip Monitor. The function of this device is to instantly warn the scraper operator of wheel slip and thus enable him to take immediate corrective action. Knowledgeable pan scraper people recognize that the preponderance of scraper tire damage and wear occurs during useless wheel slip when the scraper operator attempts to increase machine draft beyond what traction will allow. The resultant shortened tire life has become very expensive. The Wheel Slip Monitor reported here provides the means for relieving the scraper operator of attempting to judge wheel slip on tires he cannot see. Direct and intuitively understandable audible and flashing light warnings tell the scraper operator which wheel is slipping and also indicate the relative magnitude of the slip. Beside the Wheel Slip Monitor's patent utility as a real time operator aid, it has unique potential for application to extended term wheel slip history acquisition under field conditions. This information has never been easily available and it promises practical value in pan scraper management.

This report describes in detail three waterflooding projects and a pressure-maintenance project in Butler and Cowley Counties, Kans., that will be visited on the 1963 annual spring tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the flooding of five oil-producing horizons separately with injection water furnished by two water-treating plants. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, the source and treatment of the injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

The applicability of borehole assaying techniques, both conventional and advanced, to orebody evaluation in the mining industry is reviewed and assessed, and the research, development, and demonstration programs necessary to apply the various logging techniques to mining are outlined. At present, the principal method of orebody evaluation in the mining industry is coring. However, coring is costly and time-consuming, and potentially great savings can be realized if all or part of d coring program is replaced by a borehole logging suite specialized to the needs of the particular mining industry. Using a set of 12 minerals, most of which are essential to the U. S. economy, an algorithm is presented for calculating the priority of developing suitable borehole assaying technology to replace all or part of the coring in each mineral industry, The priority is expressed in terms of dollars currently spent for that portion of present orebody evaluation techniques which may eventually be replaceable by in-situ assay techniques. The orebody assay requirements (grades, accuracies, etc.) of the 12 selected mineral industries, as determined from mining industry interviews and published literature, are compiled and represent performance criteria for borehole assaying instruments for the particular industry. Current logging techniques, applied chiefly in the petroleum industry, and advanced assay techniques which are or may be packageable for borehole use are evaluated to determine their performance characteristics. The performance characteristics of the various conventional and advanced techniques are then compared with the performance criteria in each of the 12 mineral industries in order to determine the potential benefit derivable from each technique. Finally, the benefit available from each technique, averaged over the 12 mineral industries, is compared with the cost of development of the technique, to determine the overall priority for investment in research to develop the technique for use in mining. The technology assessment and cost-benefit analysis shows neutron activation analysis in its various forms to have the highest priority for research and development as a borehole logging technique. Other techniques found to be promising include x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence (optical fluorescence), and infrared spectroscopy. Of the 12 industries considered in the study, those where the need for advanced borehole logging technology is greatest are uranium, copper, gold, and iron.

To improve rock-burst control in deep vein mining, a field demonstration has been carried out by the Bureau of Mines to test a new rock-burst control concept--rock preconditioning in advance of mining. The procedure is to fracture the major rock-burst-prone zone during the development of each level before production mining. This allows initial mining to begin in a preconditioned zone and later mining from the level below to end in a prefractured or preconditioned pillar zone that is relatively burst-free. This full-scale field demonstration was carried out On the 7700 level of the Hecla Mining Co.'s Star-Morning mine. An expected burst-prone zone along the main vein between 7 and 10 crosscuts, some 250 feet long by 40 feet above and below the level, was preconditioned by blasting a fanlike ring of drilled holes from each crosscut. The drill holes, up to 100 feet long and 4 inches in diameter, were loaded with high explosives and shot. About 4,550 feet of drilling and 9,000 pounds of explosives were involved in the effort. Comparison of preshot and postshot data from monitoring instrumentation indicated that the blasting did fracture the rock in the planned zone and did result in an immediate stress decrease and softening of rock. The field data compared favorably with predicted results from a finite-element computer model simulation of the destressing. Based on observations made during mining and on the data from the Hecla rock-burst monitoring system, there is no doubt that this preconditioning in advance of mining demonstration resulted in much-improved rock-burst control during first-floor mining. It was also concluded that preconditioning the vein was more effective than preconditioning the wall rock.

The effectiveness of an industry?s safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and ?service" contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. This Bureau of Mines report reviews the recent developments in the heap leaching of gold ores with dilute cyanide solutions and the recovery of gold and associated silver from the pregnant effluents by a carbon adsorption-desorption method. Mineralogical considerations, experimental work, field studies, and commercial operations are described. Also presented are recent process advances developed by the Bureau, including the application of (1) alcohol additives to the conventional hot alkaline cyanide strip solution to enhance gold desorption from precious metal-laden activated carbon, and (2) Na2S precipitation of the silver from geld-silver cyanide solutions as a means of reducing the inventory of carbon required for precious-metal adsorption from heap leach effluents and for the production of low-silver bullion from activated carbon stripping solutions.

"Increased production of explosives in the United States in 1933 compared with 1932 is shown by statistics compiled by the Demographical Division, Health and Safety Branch, United States Bureau of Mines. The figures relate only to explosives used for industries purposes, such as mining, quarrying, and road building, and do not cover nonindustrial explosives, such as ammunition or fireworks. Industrial explosives include black blasting powder, permissible explosives, 5 and high explosives other than permissibles figures in the tables of this report were compiled from reports covering sales by the individual companies manufacture of explosives in the United States in 1933. Because of the close agreement among the several series of figures, the quantity of explosives sold is considered as reflecting production and consumption, and the three terms ""sales"", ""production"", and ""consumption"" are used interchangeably in the discussion unless otherwise stated.Of the principal industries that use high construction operations accounted for the largest percentage of increase in consumption during 1933; metal mining and quarrying also used more of this class of explosives than in the previous year. Coal mining is the chief consumer of permissible explosives; the figures for 1933 showed that bituminous-coal mining used a larger quantity than in 1932, and that anthracite mines also showed a small increase. Although a net increase of less than 1 percent in consumption was reported for black blasting powder, large increases in use of this class of explosives were reported for metal mining, miscellaneous types of work, and bituminous-coal mining. The Leadville mining-district (fig. 1) covers approximately 8 square miles adjacent to Leadville, the county seat of Lake County, Colo. It is famous for its large production of rich ores containing zinc, lead, copper, gold, and silver. Some manganiferous ores also have been produced.

Development of reliable, portable, low headroom, hard rock crushers would improve the efficiency of most currently operated conveyor systems and make it possible to bring conveyor haulage closer to the face, thus eliminating expensive rock rehandling procedures. A crusher that could be easily moved would permit the more widespread use of lower cost haulage systems, such as conveyors, to transport the ore out of the mine. Such crushers would be installed close to the working areas, resulting in an optium haul from the face to the dump location. A recent contract study by Rapidex, Inc., "Application Study of Portable Underground Hard Pock Crusher" (USBM Contract No. J0265006) provides a survey of industry needs in portable underground crushing, together with conclusions and concepts as to specifications and type of crusher required to serve the greatest number of operations. To fill this need a three phase program has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines: Phase I - Design: Phase II - Construction and Testing, and Phase III - Production Underground Test. This report covers Phase I only, and includes the complete engineering design and specifications of the Rapidex Rotary Jaw Crusher conceived in the earlier "Applications Study". Also included are the design, construction, and testing of a quarter-scale functional model, utilizing three different types of rock and two different crusher feeder systems.

This document, prepared for the U.S. Bureau of Mines Regional Mineral Assessment Program, presents data pertinent to the mineral resource assessment of the Needles 1° x 2° map quadrangle (excluding the Arizona portion), located in the Mojave Desert southeastern California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mineral survey of the quadrangle, conducted from 1991 to 1993, was done to provide the minerals data necessary to support effective land use planning and resource decision making. To this end, this report (1) inventories historic and current mining activity, (2) inventories identified resources, (3) provides an economic analysis; of identified mineral resources and estimates their feasibility for development, (4) delineates areas of exploration and development potential based on current geological, geochemical, and geophysical information, (5) supplies information on land status, transportation networks, power supplies, water availability, and regulations, and (6) analyzes socio-economic impacts of potential mining. The Needles quadrangle is in the Basin and Range province of the southwestern United Van. The area is underlain by a lithologically and structurally complex Proterozoic crystalline basement of gneiss and granite that is overlain by sparse, scattered outcrops of deformed and metamorphosed Late Proterozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary sequences. Mesozoic granitic plutons, particularly in the western half of the quadrangle, intruded the basement and sedimentary rocks, resulting in metamorphism and deformation responsible for the formation of high-grade gneisses and mylonitic rocks (core complex) in the eastern part of the quadrangle. Voluminous Tertiary volcanism unconformably overlie some older sequences. The structure of the area is dominated by Basin and Range extensional block faulting; in the eastern part of the area, block faulting is accompanied by widespread low-angle detachment faulting associated with core complex development.

The U.S. Bureau of Hines conducted e mineral resource survey of approximately 232,000 acres in part of the Humboldt National Forest, Nevada, during 1989. About 7S percent of the study area was covered with mining claims. About 1,800 samples were collected end analyzed for 16 elements. Geologic structure, including thrust faults, is the most important factor in the localization of mineral deposits in the study area. The Independence mine (formerly Jerritt Canyon), Big Springs, and Wood Gulch are the most well known active properties, all developed on large, low-grade, disseminated gold deposits. These deposits have produced almost 3 million ounces of gold and are known to contain more than 8 million ounces of gold. At least 10 barite deposits in the south end of the range have had significant past production and contain 0.2 million tons of resources. Numerous precious and base metal targets have been identified and in some cases quantified during this study.

As part of its program for the promotion of safety, the Bureau of Mines has investigated various means of mitigating or eliminating the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors found in the mining and other industries. Knowledge as to the explosive characteristics of cyclopropane in air, oxygen, and other gaseous mixtures is of both theoretical and practical importance because cyclopropane is now used extensively in anesthesia. As such an agent it has many desirable characteristics, and increased consumption of this gas may be expected if the explosion hazards now attending its use can be minimized or eliminated. The present practice of using mixtures of approximately 20 percent cyclopropane and 80 percent oxygen should be discouraged because such mixtures are violently explosive and have led ,to fatal accidents.

Knowledge as to the explosive characteristics of cyclopropane in air, oxygen, and other gaseous mixtures is of both theoretical and practical importance because cyclopropane is now used extensively in anesthesia. As such an agent it has many desirable characteristics, and increased consumption of this gas may be expected if the explosion hazards now attending its use can be minimized or eliminated. The present practice of using mixtures of approximately 20 percent cyclopropane and SO percent oxygen should be discouraged because such mixtures are violently explosive and have led to fatal accidents.
