Based on investigations and model tests combined with pile foundation on Code compilation of drydocks, we present this report to give informations against uplift pressure of piles beneath floor of drydock. In a same kind of soil, we have got comparative tests results with single pile and pile group, and the latter was performed at different spacings, different embedded depths and different number of piles in the group. Having analyzed through the results, there are some new understandings of regularity about failure mechanism and uplifting capacity of single pile and pile group, as well as optimum embedded depth of pile foundation. The results of research approach to measured values of full-scale and model tests at home and abroad, it has been placed into the Design Code of Drydock in China (1985), and can give a reference to design of pile foundation at sea and on land under uplift loading.

Cushion materials are one of the most important links in an efficient piling system. In the past, little has been done in China on this problem, so engineers are still used to those traditional woods, papers and coir ropes. In this paper, the SOA of piling cushions, their testing method and parameters used in wave equation analysis for piling are briefly reviewed. The static and dynamic mechanical characteristics of 3 types of cushion material have been determined in laboratory and suggestions about testing method and evaluation of test results are given.

The codification of foundation design and construction is a subject of extensive discussion in Europe and all current code proposals are based on limit state partial factoring. For simplicity, it is claimed, simplified forms of Partial Factor use are presently being advocated but, if this is the direction which codes are to follow, then it is preferable in this age of computer technology that a true system should be adopted rather than a simplification. A philosophically satisfactory method can readily be found which can fulfilcurrent requirements and it is better that such a method should be adopted from the beginning rather than later to find it necessary to make important alterations and amendments.

Geotechnical investigation for a LPG plant located in Assam state - an area of high seisimicty - revealed a layer of loose to medium silty sand susceptible to liquefaction at some depth below the finished ground surface. Liquefaction analyses were carried out using simplified Seed's approach as well as considering the progressive buildup of pore pressures with cyclic earthquake loading. Seismic settlements were computed for areas where the analysis indicated partial liquefaction. Pile foundations in areas where complete liquefaction was indicated, were treated with gravel drains to prevent buildup of pore pressures. The paper presents and discusses the liquefaction analyses, effect of non-liquefiable overburden soil on the liquefaction potential of the silty sand and the remedial measures that have been taken to ensure safety of the pile foundations in transmitting vertical and lateral loads.

In a well-written set of contract documents, the probability of conflicts arising during the course of construction is minimized. However, no matter how complete may be the technical language in the contract plans and specifications, the possibility always exists that conditions may be found in the field that were not anticipated at the time the design was formulated. In foundation engineering work, this is commonly referred to as "differing site conditions." When such a conflict arises in the field, the most expedient manner of resolution would be for the parties to the contract to meet and to amicably resolve the issues rather than use the long and costly adversarial approach of the litigation system currently prevalent in the United States. This rapid solution to the construction conflict can be accomplished through an alternate dispute resolution technique that includes mandatory discussion, mediation and arbitration to be initiated immediately following the inception of the dispute and to be concluded in not more than 100 calendar days from the time the dispute originated.

The new Algiers airport building is a reinforced concrete building of more than 80 thousand square meters of floor slabs. It is located at Dar-EI-Beida, near the old passenger terminal, about 20 km east of Algiers. The project is designed to receive about six millions passengers annually and leaves the possibility of future extension. Due to the presence of a top layer of compressible soil and great concentrated loads transmitted to the foundations, the building is to be founded on 1730 bored piles of 1.2 meter diameter varying in length between 14 and 28 m. Construction work started in 1986 and was interrupted in 1996 due to financial difficulties when the structure was almost complete. The structure was left unattended for more than three years without any weatherproofing and in 1999 a new firm was appointed to complete the work and hence an evaluation of the existing structure was necessary. This paper describes and discusses the foundation design, construction supervision, site quality control and assessment by the parallel seismic method of the deep foundations built in cohesive soils. The variation in soil conditions and identified geotechnical and hydrogeological problems associated with the development of the area, required a thorough knowledge of the soil conditions. A variety of tests, involving more than 200 locations, were carried out. The ground investigation, pile tests as well as different problems encountered during piles construction, are presented.

Restrained basement walls and unrestrained but massive concrete walls on rock foundations experience very small movements in response to lateral earth pressures. Such walls are often designed using at-rest earth pressures without consideration of either compaction-induced lateral pressures or vertical shear forces resulting from compression of the backfill in response to self-weight. Compaction-induced lateral earth pressures can be detrimental to the integrity and stability of retaining walls. For example, the lock walls at Eisenhower and Snell Locks on the Saint Lawrence Seaway near Massena, New York, were damaged by compaction-induced lateral earth pressures, and an extensive rehabilitation program was necessary to ensure safety of the locks. Vertical shear forces, on the other hand, can be beneficial to stability because the downwards-directed vertical force tends to counteract the overturning moment from lateral earth pressures. The contribution of vertical shear forces is not included in most modern analyses of non-moving walls, but Terzaghi used this effect in his design of a high concrete retaining wall at Fifteen Mile Falls Dam. The lock walls at Eibach Lock on the Main-Donau Canal in Germany were instrumented for both lateral and vertical stresses applied by the backfill to the wall, and the resulting measurements show that vertical shear forces from the backfill were significant and persistent over the multi-year period that the wall was monitored. Other data from pilot-scale retaining walls confirm the existence of both compaction-induced lateral earth pressures and vertical shear forces. These forces should be considered in design of non-moving walls.

A site investigation for a wide and tall hotel building, in the San Juan Bay area, Puerto Rico, indicated a soil profile of silty clay on sand, soft and loose enough to require piled foundations. The apparent uniformity of the soil profile across the site indicated that a single pile driving and termination criterion could be applied to the installation of the piles ? driven precast concrete piles. Because of the size of the site and importance of the project, the project also included a static and dynamic testing programme. The dynamic monitoring using the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) verified a consistent hammer operation. However, the results of the static loading tests showed significant and inconsistent variation in pile capacity between locations and little correlation between end-of-driving and restrike penetration resistances (blow-counts) and pile capacity. Therefore, it was not possible to rely on a simple depth and blow-count termination criterion for the site. In contrast, pile driving response in terms of measured reflected force and mobilized resistance coupled with CAPWAP analysis gave a reliable correlation to the results of the static loading tests. As presented in the paper, the dynamic testing programme was enlarged and used to develop and verify a complex set of termination criteria tailored for the multitude of conditions encountered across the site to achieve and ensure economical and safe pile installation.

This paper compares the predicted axial capacity of driven Pre-cast Pre-stressed Concrete (PPC) piles for the Lake Gaston Water Treatment Plant (LGWTP) using several design methodologies versus the axial capacity measured from dynamic and static load testing. The LGWTP site is located in Chesapeake, Virginia and is part of the Great Dismal Swamp. The subsurface investigation included soil borings, in-situ dilatometer (DMT) tests, and in-situ piezocone (CPTu) tests. The axial capacity predictions of the PPC piles were performed using the computer programs DRIVEN and FB-DEEP which are based on SPT N-values. Additionally, an empirical method proposed by Martin, et al. (1987) based on local experience with PPC pile design in the Yorktown formation in the Tidewater area of Virginia was also evaluated. Finally, the ?Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chausées (LCPC)? method developed by Bustamante and Gianeselli (1982) based on CPT measurements was also used to develop the axial pile capacity of the piles. This paper shows that the FB-DEEP computer program and the LCPC method provided a reasonably good prediction of the pile axial capacity measured from PDA, CAPWAP, and Static Load Tests in comparison with the other design methods used. The soils in this area develop significant setup over time and it was found that FB-DEEP and the LCPC method are capable of incorporating this setup in the prediction of the long-term axial capacity of driven piles in this area.

Techniques have been developed for installing model piles into beds of soil under high sustained acceleration levels aboard a centrifuge. These piles have been subjected to static and/or cyclic lateral loading in order to assess their performance and provide a data base for assessment of various design techniques for laterally-loaded single piles. From measured bending moment profiles the so-called 'p-y' curves have been deduced using fifth order splines for curve fitting, followed by subsequent differentiation and integration. The results show some divergence from the predictions of the semi-empirical designs, but these latter are generally found to be acceptable.

The effect of Sulphate and Chloride is well understood by the engineers. Most of the codes stipulate permissible limits for sulphate and chloride content in groundwater. Relatively few reference are available about the effect of organic acids on pile concrete. While executing a pile foundation work around Bombay, the authors came across the peculiar phenomenon. The routine testing of water has indicated that water is non-aggressive; however, on exposing the piles, the piles were found to be highly detonated. The testing of water on the guidelines followed by engineers associated with flow through pipes revealed that water is corrosive as per the Ryznar index concept. The present papers discussess the significance of Ryznar index in under water concreting.

In Japan, earthquakes are experienced frequently. Many buildings and structures in Japan are supported on pile foundations. Author has exhaustively researched into soft ground through construction of a large open caisson on soft ground (muck) which weighs more than 4, 000 tons. To avoid any contingency during construction, we precompressed muck stratum with a sand cushion and consolidated it with sand piles before construction of the caisson. We made borehole surveyings and soil tests many times before and after ground treatment. Following the tracks of changes of the caisson at all stages of precasting, we surveyed a large number of data. On the basis of analysis of the data we changed the original construction plan of precasting in four stages and sinking in three stages into that of precasting in three stages and sinking in one stage. Through the practice of the whole caisson construction the author has advanced new theory of kinematic law for soil particles and the change's law for strength of muck during precompression of sand cushion and consolidation of sand piles.

Piles are frequently subjected to lateral forces and moments in addition to vertical forces and hence the piles have to be designed for both lateral loads as well as vertical loads. In the design of such pile foundations, two criterias must be satisfied. First an adequate factor of safety against ultimate failure and second, as acceptable deflection at working loads. In this study the work has been carriedout to study the lateral deflection pattern of the pile. The solutions to the problem primarily depend on soil modulus. Equations for computing the values of slope, deflection and coefficients for many types of soil conditions have been developed for static loading for long piles. As analysis part is not available for the above methods for the values of depth coefficients in the tables. It is required to go for linear interpolation which is not valid and highly unreliable. In this present method, coefficients can be obtained for any value of depth coefficient (z) with simple calculation. The present method is very concise and allows one to ana­lyse any type of pile with varying depth coefficient (z) even without the availability of any practical data regarding applied lateral load (P1) and moment (M1).

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is building the world's newest accelerator-based, pulsed-neutron system, called Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The facility, located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is a partnership of six DOE national laboratories - Argonne, Brookhaven, Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge. Oak Ridge has the responsibility for managing the partnership and ultimately operating SNS. SNS will provide opportunities for up to 2,000 researchers each year from universities, national laboratories and industry from around the world for basic and applied research and technology development in the fields of materials science, magnetic materials, polymers and complex fluids, chemistry and biology. When completed, this state-of-the-art research facility will provide neutron beams that are 12 times more intense than any other such source in the world. Most of the world's neutron sources were built decades ago. Therefore, it is easy to understand how SNS will provide new research opportunities unavailable elsewhere, and at the same time restore United States leadership in neutron sciences. Neutron scattering research provides valuable information about materials that cannot be obtained through microscopy, X-rays, spectroscopes, or other techniques. The information gained from neutron scattering research leads to improved materials that are used in high-temperature superconductors, powerful lightweight magnets, aluminum bridge decks, jet aircraft, compact and computer discs, magnetic recording tapes, shatter-proof windshields, and many other applications. SNS is like a flashing strobe light providing high-speed illumination of an object and will record the structure of physical and biological materials from plastics to proteins. Because neutrons have no charge, they can penetrate more deeply into materials than do X-rays, light, or electrons and thus reveal bulk structure and properties of materials. SNS will help to understand and "engineer" better materials and the manufacture of better products at the atomic level. Our high-technology society demands new materials that are stronger, lighter, and cheaper yet perform well under severe conditions. SNS, which is designed with the future in mind, will be the leading neutron research facility for many years to come.

"Stabilization of an existing cellular tower foundation system without dismantling the tower or compromising the existing foundation system was accomplished by installation of a jet grouted pile system. The tower was originally designed to be placed on a steep hillside and to be supported by a mat foundation founded on existing bedrock. The as-built conditions of the tower foundation system showed it to be constructed on a combination of loose fill of varying thickness and native stiff silts and gravel material. To avoid the potential of differential settlement, a jet grouted pile foundation system was installed to the top of bedrock. The jet grouted pile system was rapidly installed over a two-day period so as to not delay operational permitting of the tower.INTRODUCTIONA tri-legged lattice cellular communication tower was constructed on the side of a steep hill located in a mature hard wood forest. Access to the site as well as available work area was limited to small track type drill rigs and equipment. The original tower design required the tower to be supported by a mat foundation bearing directly on bedrock. Based on a review of the foundation construction and results of a subsurface investigation, it was discovered that the foundation was built directly over a loose fill material that varied in thickness from 0 to 4.27 meters (0 to 14-ft). Because of the uncompacted nature and varying thickness of the loose fill materials, the tower would be susceptible to differential settlement which, could lead to tower instability.The objectives of this project included the following:• stabilize the mat foundation against differential settlement without removing the existing tower structure or foundation system• rapidly complete stabilization activities to allow operational permitting of the towerSOIL CONDITIONSThe subsurface soil conditions that the tower mat foundation rested on were evaluated by installing three borings in a row from the inward slope portion of the mat foundation (B-1) to the outward slope portion of the mat foundation (B-3). "The Sunrise Powerlink project received numerous industry awards for excellence. The DFI C. William Bermingham Innovation Award recognized the innovative use of prefabricated steel micropile caps to increase safety, accelerate project schedule and minimize the project carbon footprint. DFI’s Outstanding Project Award (OPA) and World Cup of Micropiles Challenge Award honored the project as a whole and its positive outcome and industry example. Sunrise Powerlink involved construction of San Diego Gas and Electric’s (SDG&E’s) new 117 mile (188 km) 500/230 kilovolt transmission line from Imperial County to San Diego County, Calif. The alignment traversed a wide variety of geotechnical conditions, including desert, mountain and marine environments, and many of the 421 lattice tower structures used to carry the transmission lines were located in remote, rugged or environmentally-sensitive terrain.Micropiles were introduced as a solution to foundation construction in these challenging areas, which ultimately involved the design and application of Crux Subsurface Inc.’s patented steel micropile cap at 234 tower locations. This was the inaugural application of the technology, and a significant component to ensuring a successful project outcome. Foundation ChallengesThe alignment crossed a number of protected environments, including National Forest land, critical habitat for bald eagles and Peninsular big horn sheep, and numerous private properties. As a result of the remote, rugged terrain, it was initially determined that 75 lattice tower locations would not permit road construction access and would require helicopter-only construction techniques. A strict in-service date combined with long permitting lead times eventually increased this number to 234 sites. Preconstruction access constraints prohibited site-specific geotechnical sampling, so initial foundation designs were completed using only available seismic geophysical surveying and preliminary mapping data. The combination of these challenges required a foundation alternative that could accommodate variable subsurface conditions, required a minimal environmental footprint for installation, and featured lightweight materials and equipment that could be transported by helicopter."

"An expansion plan for Washington Dulles International Airport is currently underway to prepare for growth at this northern Virginia facility in the future. While Dulles currently serves more than 20 million passengers a year, when the Master Plan for the Airport is fulfilled, it will be capable of handling approximately 55 million passengers a year. The current Capital Construction Program underway at Dulles will take the Airport one step closer to its full potential.As planned, work includes a new Airport Traffic Control Tower, expansion to existing concourses, a fourth runway, additional parking, and other improvements. One of the most interesting features of this project is the construction of a two-track passenger train system (Automated People Mover, or APM) linking the main terminal and concourses, which will largely replace the Mobile Lounge transportation system, thus greatly reducing surface traffic. Construction of the APM system involves deep excavations along the tunnels and at the transfer stations. This poses special challenges because the settlement-sensitive terminal, original Airport Traffic Control Tower, and concourse buildings, as well as other facilities, exist near the proposed below-ground stations. The site is also underlain by a tight grid of underground utilities that include jet fuel, gas and central communication lines, in addition to more mundane electric, sewer and water mains.One of the most interesting features of this project was the extensive and skillful utilization of micropiles for support of existing structures adjacent to the excavations. Without the use of micropiles, the cost and difficulty of the excavations would likely have been much more. Several important lessons were learned about the use of micropiles, which advance that technology.Throughout the project site, bedrock was generally encountered at 25-ft depths or more. The rock consists of micaceous and highly calcareous siltstone rock. This rock is typical of the sedimentary component of the Culpeper Basin, a Triassic Age geologic feature extending from south central Virginia to western Maryland. The siltstone beds dip gently to the west at about 10 to 20 degrees. Joint planes typically dip 60 degrees to vertical. The rock underlies a sequence of fill materials and residual soils of varying thickness."
