Introduction This paper may be regarded as another instalment of the story of the Britannia milling operation. From time to time in the past, articles (1) have been prepared by various members of the staff, giving details of crushing, grinding, and flotation treatment for the normal Britannia ore. It is not, therefore, the purpose of the present paper further to discuss what may be termed the standard milling operation, but rather to describe a flotation practice which has been evolved directly as a result of the general depression. The normal Britannia ore mixture contains chalcopyrite and pyrite as the main sulphide minerals, together with minor gold and silver values. The standard milling practice, evolved during several years of experimentation, provided for bulk flotation of the two sulphides after primary grinding to only approximately 35-mesh, followed by regrinding of the bulk concentrate, with subsequent separation of the chalcopyrite and pyrite to make a marketable concentrate of each mineral. However, in the face of a constantly increasing surplus of copper on the world markets and a steadily falling price during 1930 and 1931, it was obviously undesirable to continue producing large quantities of this metal at a loss. On the other hand, Company officials were very reluctant to add to unemployment by closing down entirely, provided operations could be continued without excessive losses. Fortunately, the existence was known of a fair sized body of ore, quite low in copper and relatively high in zinc content, with also a very considerably higher gold value than that prevailing in other sections of the mine.

A low carbon-chain trithiocarbonate ((NaOOC)CH2SCSSNa), known as Orfom® D8, was tested as an organic depressant in the differential flotation separation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite in the presence of sodium isopropyl xanthate (SIPX) or potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX). Flotation studies show that Orfom® D8 depressed chalcopyrite while molybdenite remained floatable. A study of the mechanism of adsorption indicated that Orfom® D8 adsorbs on chalcopyrite through its trithiol (CS -) functional group via both chemisorption and Orfom® D8-metal complexation. The Orfom® D8 depressant is selective and does not form any Orfom® D8-molybdenite bonds. Thus, the combination of the depressant in the presence of either collectors depressed the chalcopyrite and floated the molybdenite. Fundamental parameters of the Orfom® D8 including pKa determination as well as possible decomposition products of the depressant are reported. This study includes an economic case illustrating why using Orfom® D8 can be beneficial. INTRODUCTION Depressants are incorporated in mineral flotation units in the minerals processing industry to make or keep certain minerals selectively hydrophilic. Most reagents used are inorganic and include, for instance, sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS) which is the major reagent used for depressing sulphide minerals, particularly those containing copper, iron and lead. However, the issues with its use include high toxicity, tendency to explode, strong odour, and high consumption due to required high dosages as well as its tendency to oxidise in air. The latter can be overcome by conducting flotation in inert atmosphere such as nitrogen and recycling of the flotation process water. The use of more novel depressants that are essentially organic including homopolar reagents with hydrophilic functional groups on both ends of its structure adsorb onto a target mineral surface with one polar end, the other polar end orients into the bulk solution making the surface hydrophilic and thus, ensuring that the desired mineral does not float. The stringent environmental and safety regulations being implemented in recent times mean that the search for more environmentally friendly chemical reagents is a must have. The use of organic depressants for flotation systems such as Cu-Mo sulfide bulk concentrates has become increasingly important because of the health, safety and environmental issues surrounding the use of inorganic depressants. Nagaraj et al. (1983) investigated the Cu-Mo sulphide flotation system using a structure-activity study of depressants. They found that a major advantage of organic depressants is the ability to tailor-make organic molecules to suit many requirements and thus, eliminate the guess work approach that was predominant in the industry.

The recent development of galvanic cell-type hydrogen sensor for molten copper was outlined. The principle of the sensing mechanism, the fundamental structure of the sensor, and its performance as a process control device are discussed based on experimental work undertaken by the authors. Besides sensors based on usual perovskite-type proton conducting oxide, those using magnesium-doped alpha alumina, which was recently known as a proton conductor, were investigated and the results at the laboratory scale are reported. Considering the excellent sensitivity at high temperature and the stability to the disturbance from the attendant oxygen activity, magnesium-doped alpha alumina was regarded to be a superior material for the sensors used for such purposes.

Autonomous robots are useful for 3D underground mine mapping to avoid human exposure to hazardous spaces. To prepare a precise mine map, a self-navigating robot must navigate an arduous path, avoiding obstacles and sensing the environment. A prototype laboratory-scale robot was built and evaluated through a mock-up in a test mine gallery. It was outfitted with a 2D laser scanner, a stereo camera for obstacle avoidance, and a high-precision, laser-based imaging and digitizing system for collecting 3D point cloud data. Various algorithms were used for scan matching to facilitate simultaneous localization of the robot for mapping.

The role of the interfacial electrical 'Condition on the adsorption of col-lectors on mineral surfaces has been studied by electrophoretic mobility and adsorption measurements made on zircon. From the investigation of the electrokinetic properties of zircon, H+ and OH-are seen to act as potential determining ions, thus controlling the electrical nature of this mineral. The isoelectric point of zircon occurs at a pH of approximately 5.0, and it is evident, therefore, that the zircon surface would be positively charged below a pH of 5.0 and negatively charged above this pH. The adsorption of collectors therefore de-pends strongly on the pH of the solution; anionic collectors are adsorbed on positively charged surfaces and cationic collectors on negatively charged surfaces. This, in turn, de-fines the effective flotation condition, with respective collectors, for this mineral. The above results have been correlated with the flotation behaviour obtained by the simplified flotation test using a modified Hallimond tube.

"Cominco Copper Division's Valley Mine is located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia, approximately 275 km by air northeast of Vancouver. The nearest towns are Logan Lake, located IS km to the east and Ashcroft, located about 50 km to the northwest.Preproduction stripping of rock and overburden at the Valley Mine's Lake Zone Pit began in mid-1982 following a decision to discontinue mining in the adjacent Jersey Pit. Equipment and mining methods were carried over from the Bethlehem Copper operations which, with Valley Copper Mines, were merged into Cominco in December 1982.Blasting practices, as carried over from the Bethlehem pits, were designed to provide the fine fragmentation required to meet production requirements using the Bethlehem crusher. However, after mining the first few benches of the Lake Zone Pit, it became apparent that overblasting at the pit limits was causing a number of bench failures, as well as contributing to an over-all reduction of the material strength of the rock mass forming the southwest wall of the pit.With present ultimate pit plans calling for the southwest wall to be as high as 300 m, Valley staff realized that potential slope stability problems should be dealt with as early as possible. This philosophy would enable experimentation on phase pit walls in order to attain the optimum slope angle on the ultimate pit wall.As part of an over-a ll slope stability program, a controlled blasting program was initiated at the Lake Zone Pit in March 1983. In this program, Valley engineering and production staff worked together with Golder Associates in establishing design criteria and evaluating the results. This program resulted in a marked improvement in the soundness of pit walls while maintaining the required degree of fragmentation."

This paper will discuss the benefits and advantages of using 3D survey data in stope analysis. Obtaining detailed 3D survey data of underground mine progress and production is a challenge. It is almost impossible to ?see? around corners, underneath overhangs, or deep into dark, dusty, humid underground voids. Thus, valuable ore can remain permanently encased in backfill. Without the benefit of 3D survey data, underground mines have the difficult task of meeting grade quotas without the benefit of knowing exactly what has been mined. Lack of this data usually results in unfavorable month end Reconciliation factors, where grades must be adjusted to match grades assessed by the Mill.

The Sumitomo Metal Mining Company Ltd. (SMM) started to produce electrolytic nickel at the Niihama Nickel Refinery in 1939. In 1992, the conventional matte electrorefining process was converted to the matte chlorine leach electrowinning (MCLE) process, which is currently in practice. SMM has mainly used two kinds of nickel matte as the raw material for the MCLE process. Treatment of new raw materials, which have different impurity contents from the original nickel matte, has become mandatory because of changes in the market. Therefore, the MCLE process has been required to increase its flexibility to treat the different impurity contents in the new raw materials. An increase in the capacity for iron removal is included in such requirements. A new iron removal circuit in the MCLE process, based on a process development study, was recently installed. The iron removal circuit is in operation, and efforts are currently underway to optimize the performance of the circuit by changing the present operating parameters. In addition to the removal of the iron, the application is also expected to improve the nickel recovery. The outline of the new circuit and the current iron balance in the MCLE process are described in this paper, together with the effect of the circuit on iron treatment capacity.

The mining industry itself should, by and large, benefit from the new tax.IntroductionOn January 1, 1991, it is proposed that the existing federal sales tax will be replaced by a new sales tax - the Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST will be leviedat a rate of 9% on most goods and services consumed in Canada.How it will WorkThe GST will be a tax on the final consumption of goods and services. It differs from a retail sales tax in that it will be collected throughout the production and distribution chain. However, the net effect of the tax paid on a particular good or service will be equivalent. The example above (next column) illustrates the application of the GST to the production and sale of a chair.Illustration of GST for a ChairEssentially, the total tax will equal 9% of the sale price to the final consumer. However, GST will be collected on the value added at each stage of the production and distribution chain . What will be TaxedVirtually all goods and services will be taxed. Also discussed is the design and installation of a 1-mile-long steel-cord belt conveyor sys-tem with a most modern type of mobile belt conveyor stacker, along with automatic and semi-automatic controls for the entire ship-unloading and stockpiling operations.

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. "The presently increasing world-wide interest in advanced ceramic materials is generally focussed on their exploitation in both structural and functional applications. With the opportunity to engineer microstructures and thereby closely control and tailor the final properties, there are many new applications being made for these materials in both areas.The scope and some of the applications for functional ceramics are reviewed and examples of the present Canadian activity in this field are discussed.BackgroundThere has been progressively increasing international interest in the development and exploitation of ceramic materials in the last five years. The nearest railway stations are at St. Peters, which is thirty-two miles southwest of the mine, and at Sydney. Good gravel-surfaced roads connect the mine to the railways.The mine is producing at the rate of 600 tons a day of ore containing zinc, lead, copper, and minor amounts of silver and gold. At the present time the mill feed averages 9 .per cent combined metals, of which zinc makes u:p 7 1per cent and lead and copper each 1 per cent.General GeologyThe ore being mined ,by Mindamar occurs in a shear zone parallel to a northeasterly striking, vertically dipping, series of rocks consisting of rhyolite tuff, rhyolite, minor more basic flow rocks, and diorite (Figure 2). In the vicinity of the mine, these rocks have been termed the Mine Series. They belong to the Bourinot group, which has been assigned by L. J. Weeks to the Middle Cambrian. At the latitude of the mine, the Bourinot group is bounded on the northwest by the Stirling fault and extends eastward for two miles."

We report structural forces measured for 10 nm silica particles deposited on alumina substrate and 5-80 nm alumina particles on mica using atomic force microscopy technique. For nanoparticles forming clusters, oscillation of structural forces was recorded with a periodicity that is close to the size of the nanoparticles used. Additionally, selected force-separation results indicate that the forces involved between the AFM probe and individual nanoparticles can be studied using the nanoparticle-coated substrates.

Strips of AA6111 automotive alloy were cast on a horizontal single belt strip casting simulator, Pure copper and carbon steels substrates plasma sprayed with different coatings for improving the strip surface quality, were used as chill moulds, Experimental studies revealed that a graphite coating provided the greatest benefit in achieving good surface quality. The interfacial heat fluxes during solidification of AA6111 strip were calculated by the IHCP method (Inverse Heat Conduction Problem). Temperature variations and cooling rates within the strips were then calculated through numerical simulations based on the time-dependent heat fluxes obtained by IHCP, The effects of casting parameters, including casting temperature and strip thickness, on interfacial heat fluxes, cooling rates and microstructures, were investigated, Although the maximum interfacial heat fluxes on the chill copper substrate were much higher than the results obtained from the steel substrates, the solidification times of the melts were mainly determined by strip thickness. Very fine equi-axed grains were obtained for both 1.2mm and 2.5mm thick strips thanks to the rapid extraction of heat, and effective grain refinement.

For over a decade European countries have addressed contaminated sites by developing technologies for managing both polluted soil and groundwater. This development has not only been driven by health and environmental aspects, but also because of economic pressures, as the remediation and redevelopment of derelict areas can be a meaningful alternative to undeveloped areas for the establishment of new industrial, recreational, housing and service locations. In most developing countries, however, the subject of contaminated sites is a new environmental issue that authorities have recently started to deal with. Among these countries, Chile has just started to prepare the country's legal context as well as to foster the formation of research and investigation groups that will deal with the exploration, investigation and management of contaminated sites. That requires a comprehensive technical, scientific and legal support in this stage. Goal of this article is to present the state-of-the-art technologies for site remediation currently applied in industrialized countries, in order to identify the most interesting approaches that can be implemented within the Chilean situation, especially considering the influence of the copper mining industry on the soil and groundwater quality of the environment surrounding their production facilities.

Transient Liquid Phase Bonding (TLP) of a Nickel base superalloy, Inconel 738, was performed to study the influence of holding time, filler gap size, and temperature on the joint microstructure. Insufficient holding time for complete isothermal solidification of liquated insert caused formation of eutectic-type microconstituents along the joint centerline region. An increase in the eutectic thickness with increase in initial filler gap size was observed in joints prepared at a constant temperature and holding time. In agreement with prediction by conventional TLP diffusion models, an increase in bonding temperature for a constant gap size, resulted in decrease in the time, tf, required to form a eutectic-free joint by complete isothermal solidification. However, a significant deviation from these models was observed in specimens bonded at and above l 175°C. A reduction in isothermal solidification rate with increased temperature was observed in these specimens, such that a eutectic-free joint could not be achieved by holding for a time period that produced complete isothermal solidification at lower temperatures. Considerable enrichment of the liquated insert with base metal alloying elements at higher temperatures is suggested to be an important factor contributing to the observed departure from conventional TLP prediction.

"For a detailed prognosis of mineral comminution processes, simulation tools like DEM still pose various challenges. Less realistic mineral structures can affect the results of simulation models such as bonded-particle models (BPM). Hence, in order to design mineral processes with these models as tools, representative mineral input data should be used. The article shows, how realistic 2D-structures can be modelled by taking advantage of the parameters identified by the Quantitative Mineralogical Analysis (QMA). Important quantitative parameters can be derived by analyzing three orthogonal thin or polished sections. For this reason point, line, and area analysis are applied. The mentioned parameters precisely describe the texture and structure of minerals. The newly developed software is able for the first time to semi-automatically analyze images of mineral structures using QMA. Moreover, statistically equivalent structures of minerals can be modelled using the QMA- parameters. Generating synthetic, but equivalent mineral structures opens the door for more reliable BPM based simulations. Within future research, the procedure will be adopted to generate 3D-structures. Therefore, QMA-based routines that already have been applied to generate 2D-models shall be utilized as basis. The aim of this procedure is to synthesize realistic microstructures based on certain statistical figures in order to improve comminution simulations.INTRODUCTION Due to its increasing capability, the use of computer technology is permanently intensifying in the design of mineral processes. The recent past has impressively shown that computer models can enhance the understanding of mineral processing. There is in fact a rising number of research activities, which are using simulation approaches to study various aspects of it. Weerasekara et al. (2013) give a comprehensive overview over the application of discrete element modelling (DEM) in the science of comminution.Nonetheless, using simulation tools such as DEM in general still poses a challenge. For a detailed simulation of a mineral comminution process with DEM, bonded particle models (BPM) appeared suitable in the past. The following issues, however, affect an appropriate prediction when modelling with BPM:• Simulations with high numbers of particles may need a lot of time for computation. • Internal modeling parameters like the spring and damper constants in DEM have to be adjusted by comparing its specific crushing behavior in the simulation to reality.• In order to use DEM for prediction of mineral processing, it is essential to validate the correctness of the models and assumptions, which is sometimes difficult. As Weerasekara et al. (2013) have stated it is crucial that the DEM method as well as the DEM code work properly.• It is challenging to implement the complex geometric structures of real minerals into the model."

The staff of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting concentrator have developed a new type of reagent feeder. Several factors encouraged the development of such a system: varying heads caused by the mixing of ores from several mines, the increasing number of flotation circuits operated and reagent feeding stations remote from the flotation operator's work area. The reagent feeders also had to be compatible with future plans for reagent control from an on-stream X-ray analyzer and computer system. The new feeder is a positive-displacement pump set to deliver a constant volume per stroke. At a remote panel, the feed rate is altered by changing the time between strokes. The feeders have been found to be reasonably trouble-free and accurate to less than 2 per cent error.
