"A key element for a successful mining operation is the grinding circuit. It must be reliable, maintainable and must perform to or above design capacities for 95% of the time. Once chosen and installed major modifications are either prohibitive or very expensive. The selection of mills and drive system is probably the single most important decision made within the concentrator complex.Economic studies revealed that the optimum expansion for Lornex was a 68070 increase in plant throughput. This indicated that the new mill would have to be larger than the existing 32-foot mills.The Lornex ore has a wide range of hardness which has a great influence on mill throughput (Table 1). To smooth out the fluctuations, a blending program ha s always been in effect at the mine, coupled with ball charge control for the primary mills. As can be appreciated, an optimum balance is difficult to achieve. A sudden change to so ft ore with a high ball charge puts the mill into jeopardy with a constant speed drive.The blending philosophy would continue after the expansion, but with the addition o f a second primary crusher, it was envisaged to have the new mill process harder ore to maintain production targets. In theory, the new mill would have a proportionally larger ball charge than the existing mills.This scheme makes the new mill vulnerable for processing so ft ore for a fixed speed mill. Thus, variable speed seemed an attractive option.In early 1979 prominent mill manufacturers were invited to submit proposals for the new mill. Fixed and variable speed mills were to be considered with mill size ranging from 32-foot to 36-foot diameter. The proposals were to include the drive, ball charge, % critical speed, couplings, gears, etc. - the complete package. The recommendations were variable with most manufacturers submitting several alternatives. Recommended mill speed varied from 68% to 78% critical. The concept of variable speed was becoming more attractive, Lornex ultimately decided on a twin DC motor drive system for a 34-foot diameter mill.After start-up it was discovered that best throughput occurred at 78% mill critical speed or top speed of the drive motors. The motor speed range was adjusted upward from 186 to 200 rpm. Today the mills operate at 79% critical or a motor speed o f 193.5 rpm.Clearly the selection of the variable speed mill allowed the flexibility to optimize throughput."

"The potential benefits of measuring the volume of excavated open stope are enormous. By comparing the actual excavation of the orebody contour, it is possible to determine the “real"" amount of mining dilution, as well as the ore left in place. Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) has developed a stope survey system that allows for rapid and efficency measurement of underground excavation volumes. The system comprises a commercial laser (EDM), a set of lightweight rigid rods, an automated scanning device, a hand-held data logger and Autocad-based software for volume calculation and drawing manipulations. This system is an invaluable tool for the optimization of mining practices and could also be used for the delineation of caving areas. IntroductionDilution is the most common and devastating mine disease. In some instance s it could systematically cripple the profitability of an operation, and in more extreme cases, it could become a terminal disease. The Northern Miner Journal (1988) reported that many operations have closed because of uncontrolled dilution, before they even completed their first year of production. Other studies (Pakalnis, 1986) have shown that approximately 40% of all underground operations have more than 20% dilution. Considering that every ton of dilution costs in the neighbourhood of $25, the total direct cost of dilution to the Canadian mining industry may easily exceed one hundred million dollars per year.The dilution problem has been a major concern to Noranda Minerals for some time and in 1984 a comprehensive geomechanics research program was created at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. New empirical stope dimensioning techniques, improved cable bolting techniques and sophisticated ground control instrumentation projects (among others) contributed to improve the situation at Noranda.A new tool which can have a very significant impact on the ""war"" against dilution is being developed by the Noranda Technology Centre. The laser stope survey system allows for a rapid, precise and efficient measurement of underground excavation volumes. By comparing the excavation planned with the volume excavated, it becomes possible to determine the ""real"" amount of mining dilution as well as the amount of ore left in place. This system may also allow for early detection of a dilution problem. As with other diseases, early detection provides the best chance for a fast and total recovery."

"This paper explores the history of AC static variable frequency control drive systems on open cast mining machinery, in particular electric mining shovels and electric walking draglines, over the past ten years. It critiques the peformance of these drive systems from a productivity and operating cost standpoint and evaluates the over-all success of the original design concepts as they were envisaged in the 1970s. The paper details the state-of-the-art as it exists today as well as design improvements contemplated for the immediate future.IntroductionConsidering the fact that the very first successful application of an alternating current electrical distribution system occurred at the Gold King gold mine near Ames, Colorado, U.S.A., in the year 1891, it seems somewhat ironic that almost 100 years later, AC excavator drive systems are just now becoming commonplace in the mining industry.If one were to read the biography of Lucien L. Nunn, the first person to successfully install a commercially viable alternating current power distribution system, one would quickly visualize a parallelism between his fight to achieve acceptance of his new lower cost technology and that of those commissioned with the belief that AC static variable frequency control drive systems are not only a better performing, lower cost drive system for mining excavators today, but moreover, the drive systems of the future in our industry.This paper will deal with the evolution and incorporation of AC static drive systems on open cast mining excavators. It will trace the history of the development of these drive systems in the mining industry, the current state-of-the-art concerning these systems, and what the future holds for these excavators in our industry."

"The use of hydraulically delivered classified tailings sands to provide ground support in large mining operations is still widespread despite recent developments of alternate backfilling methods and materials. The major disadvantages of the use of hydraulic fill are the costs and risks associated with slurry delivery. The main risk is that of bulkhead failure resulting from sand liquefaction due to insufficient operational control or due to dynamic loading from earthquake or rockburst. That risk may be eliminated by the pouring of a stiff cemented sand plug in the base of each stope prior to continuous fill pouring in that stope. An additional advantage of cemented plugs is that massive bulkheads are not needed. Instead, a temporary (removable and reusable) bulkhead can be used for plug forming.Physical model studies of fill pressures on a temporary bulkhead were carried out in a 3 m radius centrifuge facility. Fill pouring in-flight was carried out in order to model prototype stress paths. The results indicate that the average bulkhead pressure is likely to be less than 10 kPa under normal operating conditions and less than 20 kPa under the poorest anticipated operating conditions which include smooth walls, high slimes content and high water-content slurries. A portable bulkhead consisting of a central core and a surrounding sealing bladder was modelled and found to be effective. The use of different sizes of cores allowed the stress distribution adjacent to these bulkheads to be evaluated."

"Various aspects of processing ferro-manganese fines generated during the crushing of standard ferro-manganese have been studied in laboratory-scaleplasma furnaces. These laboratory furnaces are based on the use of conventional graphite electrodes rather than water-cooled non-consumable torch devices. The reactor system has separate, distinct zones for pre-healing, melting and smelting. This unique feature assists in the removal of undesirable elements from the molten alloy. Ferro-manganese alloys containing over 82% manganese, 0.004% sulphur, less than 0.01% silicon, 0.006% nitrogen, 0.001% oxygen and 0.0006% hydrogen have been produced from the offgrade ferro-manganese fines.IntroductionThe major application of manganese is as an alloying additive to numerous metals such as steel, aluminum, copper and magnesium. Manganese is mainly consumed in the ferrous industry in the form of ferro-manganese and silicon-manganese, or in its pure state as electrolytic manganese when certain impurities inherent in the manufacture of ferro-manganese and silicon-manganese alloys must be avoided. Before being sold on the market, ferro-manganese is crushed and during this process alloy fines are generated. Due to the nature of the casting process, the fines produced are contaminated with silica sand. In addition, due to segregation effect s, the pho sphorus content of the alloy fines is higher than that found in the bulk of the material produced. Because of the smaller particle size and the higher impurity content, there is only a limited market available for the alloy fines. For this reason, there has been increasing attention directed toward the development of processes for recycling fines through the conventional smelting furnaces. The fines may be charged to the furnace either directly or after agglomeration. The detrimental effects of charging the fines directly include:(1) decrease in gas permeability, causing irregular gas flow;(2) increase in the amount of dust produced;(3) packing and bridging; and(4) intensive reactions due to sudden flow in hot zones."

"Given the properties, locations and quantities of material to be hauled and the dump locations and capacities, the designer wishes to select the type and number of trucks and loading equipment required. Accordingly, software is being developed to assist in creation of the equipment, material and road network data bases, in selection of equipment, materials and road networks from these data bases, and in evaluation of the expected productivities both in a rapid, non-interactive, approximate fashion and a more detailed interactive fashion which permits the user to act as superintendent, if he so chooses. The basic technology has been developed and applied to an open-pit copper mine and is being refined and generalized for oil sands and coal mining applications.BackgroundA set of mathematical and interactive computer models are under development to aid in the selection of equipment and operating policies for an open-pit oil sands mine being planned by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. This paper describes the computer models being developed of truck haulage systems. Although the interactive truck haulage model is based primarily on a model developed by the National Research Council in collaboration with Glenayre Electronics Ltd. of North Vancouver and Lornex Mines Limited(2).(3l, substantial changes and improvements are being incorporated to greatly increase its generality re equipment types, road network characteristics, dispatching and supervisory policies, etc. Although this paper is principally devoted to the truck haulage model, discussion is included concerning its interactions with other models."

MOST mines have a model of some kind to illustrate either geological structure, mining operation, or some special condition or feature of the property. The type used depends on the particular feature or use for which it is intended. At Dome Mines we have developed an interesting and practical application of the horizontal-type model. This model shows the workings of each level horizon plotted on glass. These glass panes are set in frames which, in turn, rest on drawers equipped with rollers which can be pulled out as desired into a light chamber. The features of this model are its rigid steel construction and that any desired number of level plans can be pulled out, eliminating any other interference from other levels. Figures 1 and 2 are photographs of the model cabinet and show its construction and general features. The cabinet is of steel construction with the following overall dimensions: width, 6 ft. 5 in.; depth, 6 ft. 7 in.; height, 5 ft. 2 in. When not in use it can be completely closed-in, making the cabinet practically dustproof. There are 30 drawers, one for each of the 29 levels and one for the surface. The glass in each drawer is divided into two panes, 36 in. by 36 in., of flatdrawn double-diamond 'lustraglass' with about l/32 in. between adjacent edges. The panes are held rigidly in the frames, which are lined with felt strips, and may be adjusted by set screws, four of which on each drawer are shown in Figures 1 and 2. The level workings, on a scale of 1 inch equals 100 feet, are traced in ivory black Windsor & Newtons artist oil paint. Co-ordinate lines are shown in crimson lake, and main geological contacts are shown in their respective colours. Figure 3 is a photograph looking down on one of the levels. The lighting consists of 14 30-watt fluorescent bulbs, with reflectors, under frosted glass. These lamps are much more satisfactory when operated by 60-cycle rather than 25-cycle and, as we had available nearby a source of direct current, this was used. The electrical unit consists of a rotary converter from d.c. to 60-cycle. This arrangement gives perfect lighting, allowing most colours to be easily distinguished. "The mechanical aspects of cable bolt failure are considered from the point of view of properties of grout and cable, as well as of the rock in which it is anchored. The results from recent investigations made in-situ as well as in the lab are combined and presented with reference to other work done in the area. An attempt is made to stimulate the thinking along these lines so as to initiate further research which may enhance the design of cable bolting as it applied to mining operations.IntroductionIn the past twelve year s systematic cable bolting has found application in many areas. In civil engineering rock anchors have been used to provide tension at the heel of a dam permitting the reduction of its cross section. They have been used in retaining walls to reduce construction time and costs by eliminating the need for struts and braces which complicate pouring the foundation walls. It is also possible to use rock anchors in providing reactions where tall buildings are subjected to uplift on one side due to wind forces. Cantilever bridges may be constructed by implementing rock anchors to provide anchorage requirements. Anchorage piles or dolphins or mooring ships have also been built using these. In the mining area rock anchors, commonly known as cable bolts because they are made of hoist cable may be implemented in the reinforcement of hanging walls or to retain rock slopes.In order to sustain de-pressurized ground where rock separation developed along the pressure arches, cable bolts were utilized at the Tsumeb Mine in South-West Africa and also at the Strathcona Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, In both places old degreased hoist ropes were installed in downholes from crosscuts above a given stope and then grouted without tensioning. Jeremic and Cassidy described the use of cable bolts to increase hanging wall stability and postpone fracturing, in addition to producing pre-support for improvement of stope back stability."

"Gamma-ray spectral logging, a useful technique for uranium exploration and evaluation, has generally been underutilized by the Canadian mining industry. Provided that the technique is properly applied, it is capable of yielding reliable quantitative information regarding the distribution of uranium and other radioelements along the borehole under most conditions.In practice. there are numerous factors which potentially can degrade the quality of the log and thus any quantitative interpretation based on it. Fortunately, the appropriate choice of logging equipment and technique can avoid many such problems, and corrections can be applied to the data to compensate for most of the others."

Nanocrystalline structure formations produced by severe plastic deformation in Fe-0.15C with initial ferritic-pearlitic and IF steel with ferritic microstructures have been studied through microstructural observation and microhardness measurements. It was found that the nanocrystalline region first forms near the surface of samples due to localized severe deformation. It was also observed that the nanocrystallization rate of Fe-0.15C and IF steels and the deformed layer thickness in these two materials are different with similar milling conditions. The crystallite size and structural evolution of the samples during milling was studied by employing XRD and SEM.

"This paper describes the automation of a mine hoist ore loading pocket using a programmable controller. It provides an introduction to programmable control, and outlines the various modes and operating sequences of the loading pocket. A comparison is made with previous equipment to illustrate the increased flexibility, reliability and diagnostic functions that are gained.IntroductionLoading pockets have evolved from a couple of manually operated air cylinders to entirely automated systems. Early pockets were usually formed in rock, with loading and discharging regulated by air-operated gate s. Interlocks, added to this arrangement, prevented simultaneous operation of the gates and ensured proper hoist position . As the loading pocket advanced, it was recognized that gravity feed posed problems, often becoming plugged or letting water run through into the shaft. A belt conveyor was employed, eliminating the se problems and resulting in greater loading control. Weighing the combination of transistorized logic modules, replaced many relay systems. This elimination of moving parts and contacts increased reliability and reduced maintenance costs.As semiconductor technology progressed, there were major breakthroughs in miniaturization and reliability, and as a result the programmable controller was introduced. Programmable controllers first appeared in the automotive industry in the late 1960's. A system controller was required to replace the large relay panels in operation at that time. The use of digital integrated circuitry enabled these programmable controllers to automate processes with hundreds of inputs and outputs. Advances in electronics reduced production costs , making controllers for smaller application s viable . This development is on-going, each generation introducing controllers with greater capabilities for a wider variety of systems. equipment was the next step in loading pocket development, and dependance on much of the manual control was reduced . "Inert gas use for underground mine fir e control is a well-established mature technology in some parts of the world. This paper reviews three candidate inert gases and describes three case histories where inert gas fire-fighting technology was used in actual underground fires.IntroductionInerting is the introduction of an inert gas into an atmosphere in contact with a fire to reduce the level of oxygen and hence the intensity of the fire 10 the point of extinction. The benefits of inerting include:a. Reduced Explosion HazardBy displacing oxygen from the atmosphere surrounding the fire the risk of secondary gas explosions is reduced. For example, simple methane-air mixtures at standard temperature and pressure are non-explosive below 12% oxygen. In actual mine fires, combustible gases may include hydrogen and carbon monoxide as well as methane. Such gases are also rendered non-explosive with oxygen removal to below 40/0. Fuel-rich oxygen-deficient mixtures can however be made explosive through dilution with air. Such dilution can occur downwind of the fire. It is also important to remember that the atmosphere in a sealed-off fire zone is rarely homogenous.b. Reduced Fire Intensity and SpreadIn a fire zone the initial combustion may well set alight materials surrounding the fire. Inerting can reduce the intensity and spread of secondary combustion and can cool the area surrounding the fire zone after the fire itself has been extinguished.c. Reduced Air LeakageLeakage of air into sealed areas in excess of the natural leakage may be reduced either by introducing inert gas into the leakage paths to replace air or by pressure balancing seals and providing a chamber of nitrogen on the outbye side of the seals. Both methods assist in the reduction of the intensity of combustion and hasten oxygen starvation."

Although the measurement of blast vibration close to the blasthole is critical to the understanding of rock fragmentation mechanisms and blast damage in the rock masses, limited experience for such monitoring exists. Because much higher vibration amplitude and frequency ranges are expected in rock masses close to an explosive charge as compared to far field vibrations, different problems from those for the far field monitoring must be considered for near field blast vibration monitoring. Currently, guidelines for design of the near field blast monitoring systems do not exist. This paper describes the development of an integrated technique for vibration monitoring close to a blast hole, including selection and installation of transducers, design of a monitoring system and signal recording. A densified cement was designed for grouting accelerometers in order to match p-wave impedance between the rock and grout. The monitoring technique described has proven suitable for blast vibration monitoring within 2 m to 15 m of a blast hole having loading conditions similar to production blasts.

"The Loss Prevention Program and management style applied at Kidd Creek enabled them to maintain a 1.02/200 000 man-hours accident frequency over a 20-year period. Falconbridge Limited, Kidd Creek Division operates a major zinc, copper, silver mine, two gold mines and a metallurgical facility in Timmins, Ontario. The metallurgical site and the base metal mine are 17 miles apart and joined by their own railroad. The minesite consists of two shafts, one 3000 feet deep and the other to 5200 feet deep, as well as the necessary maintenance and service shops. The metallurgical site consists of a 14 000 STPD concentrator, a zinc refining plant, copper smelter, copper refinery, and the necessary maintenance shops. The two gold mining operations are adjacent to the metallurgical site.At the time of writing this paper the workforce consisted of some 2500 people divided between the two sites. Nine hundred and ninety-two employees are stationed at the minesite, with the remainder at the metallurgical site and gold mines. The workforce in the Timmins operation is non-unionized and reflects the belief that employee interests are well served.Beside providing competitive wages and an excellent benefit package, Kidd Creek takes special pride in its employee relations practices and continued efforts in communication.In each of the programs referred to, there have been equal involvement by both management and the employees. Each crew, under the direction of a supervisor, makes up its own health and safety committee. To maintain a successful Loss Prevention Program, it is essential that management and the employees work closely together and provide meaningful input and effort to succeed.At this point, refer to the lost time injury frequency as a measure of failure and refer to the opposite end of the scale as the measure of success. The ultimate goal of every operating company is to have a zero frequency, therefore denoting 100070 success. The company uses most of the tangible safety aids found in other mining operations, such as safety posters, safety reminders, check lists, and the use of the Neil George Safety System. The difference is the manner and style of management at the Kidd Creek Division. Their ""open door"" policy and the close association, between management and the employees, has always served them well. Also, at Kidd Creek they believe they have a well-trained and dedicated workforce."

Slot raises are relief holes within a stope in longhole stoping methods, designed to provide a free face that facilitates the expansion of the blasted rock during blasting, ultimately achieving the desired fragmentation. Various methods are employed to produce these slot raises, like conventional drop raise drilling, raisebore & V30 drilling. However, slot drilling is generally characterized by high costs and limitations in precision, resulting in unplanned ore losses and dilution. This paper introduces a novel alternative to slot drilling referred to as the "paste slot", designed specifically for paste backfill operations in underground mining. This new method emphasizes considerations in cured paste strength, paste wall removal, and stope dimensions and employs modified drop raises or dumped rings to optimize blast gas effectiveness and material flow. The paste slot method eliminates the need for reamers and reduces the total slot drill meters an average from 650m to only 300m for narrow stopes (3-4m wide). This significantly reduces the stope cycle time, leading to substantial cost savings and increased productivity. This new method was successfully implemented at the underground mines in Canada and Australia, resulting in a 20% reduction in stope cycle time and cost savings of 53,000 USD per slot compared to the conventional slot. This paper discusses the design and execution strategy of the paste slot method in underground paste backfill operations. It highlights the advantages of the method, shares operational insights gained during implementation, and showcases its potential applicability to other mines across Canada and globally.

"A summary is presented of the report completed by the Coal Mining Research Centre in 1980. This report was of a cross-pit conveyor system applied as an auxiliary mining complement to the major stripping unit, a dragline. The purpose of the CMRC report was to evaluate selective mining and replacement of the upper horizons of the strata as an aid in reclamation. These strata were the topsoil, subsoil and glacial till.Past utilization of cross-pit conveyor systems and related engineering studies were assessed. The parameters of the study were based on the mining and geological conditions of the Alberta prairie coal mines. The principal excavator for stripping was a dragline. Excavation of the upper horizons was done by a bucket-wheel excavator discharging onto the crosspit conveyor. Alternative equipment applications were economically compared. Four cases or geological sections were evaluated in detail. The economics of the alternative mining systems for each of the cases were determined. In all instances, the most economical solution was a tandem system utilizing a dragline with a bucket-wheel excavator/ cross-pit conveyor system."

Notably absent from the budget was the typically long list of tax changes of immediate effect. Instead, the bulk of the budget papers consisted of a wide variety of white papers on significant topics that would have a far reaching impact on the future of all Canadians.This month. Tax Notes examines the highlights of Mr. Lalonde's budget.IntroductionThe mining industry need not feel slighted in Finance Minister Lalonde's budget of February 15, 1984: the budget offered very little that would have an immediate impact of significance on any sector of the economy. Apart from some welcome announcements for the oil and gas industry to postpone the implementation of certain negative tax changes, the budget was surprisingly scant in terms of definitive tax proposals.While massive revisions in the rules relating to pensions, small businesses, commodity taxation and profit-sharing were brought forward, many of these proposals are set out in White Papers or other documents to be implemented into legislation only after further consultation. Canadians will accordingly have to wait for such promised benefits as increased RRSP and other pension contribution limits."

"During the summer of1989, Les Mines Selbaie, with the cooperation of Université Laval initiated a research project to evaluate the column flotation technology for its concentrator near Joutel, Quebec. The experimental work involved both a 5 cm by 11 m laboratory column and a 45 cm by 10 m home-made pilot unit Amenability tests were conducted using both units on various streams of the plant. Results showed that columns are not suitable for the copper cleaning circuit because the loss of precious metals, associated with the rejected pyrite, overcome the improved copper metallurgy. On the other hand, column testing at the zinc circuit showed improved zinc selectivity.Scale-up testing was', therefore, conducted on the first zinc cleaner concentrate using the laboratory-size column. The influence of variables such as porous parger grain size, wash water flow rate, airflow rate and froth depth values on column performance was' first assessed. Scale-up parameters were then determined using the optimal operating conditions from the previous tests. Simulation facilitated the determination of the most convenient plant-scale column arrangement.A number of conclusions concerning the experimental determination of scale-up parameters are also presented."

"Research and development on the production of liquid fuels from coal is rapidly expanding worldwide. AImost every industrialized country is engaged in coal liquefaction research and process development. In Canada, the federal government, through CANMET, is actively supporting coal liquefaction research and development in a number of areas.A review of the basic principles and some of the processes in the production of liquid fuels from coal is presented with reference to the characteristics of the Canadian coal resource base. An overview of the CANMET coal liquefaction contract program is presented and specific results from the batch autoclave studies carried out with Saskatchewan lignite and Nova Scotia high-volatile bituminous coals are discussed. The development of a laboratory-scale continuous-flow coal liquefaction unit at the Energy Research Laboratories of CANMET to investigate the co-processing of coal and bitumen/heavy oil is also described.IntroductionThe CANMET coal liquefaction program is made up of two interrelated parts. The first part consists of the research and development work being carried out at the Energy Research Laboratories near Ottawa, Ontario. The second focuses on contracted research and development as part of the Coal Conversion Program of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The long-term objective of the liquefaction program is to contribute to Canadian liquid fuels production through the definition, research, development and demonstration of different coal liquefaction technologies for the Canadian marketplace.In coal liquefaction, the main objective is to produce liquid hydrocarbons with a higher hydrogen-to-carbon (HIC) ratio than the coal feedstock while reducing heteroatom (S,O,N) content, removing mineral matter and minimizing gas production. Typical atomic HIC ratios for a variety of Canadian fossil fuels are shown in Figure I. Canadian coals have about 500/0 of the HIC ratio present in tar sand bitumens and heavy oils and only about 20% of the ratio available in methane. In general, the cost of synthetic fuels production is related to the cost of hydrogen and, therefore, to the increase of HIC ratio between feedstock and products. On this basis, the production of liquid fuels from coal would be expected to be more costly than liquid fuels produced from bitumens and heavy oils. However, for mined tar sands and some heavy oils this difference tends to be offset by the large sand content (>90 mass %) of tar sand bitumens and the increased production costs of viscous heavy oils. For example, it can easily be shown that for equal weights of distillate <525°C) yield, current coal liquefaction processes required between two and three times less mined coal by weight than the mined tar sand s required for the most technically advanced processes proposed for bitumen upgrading."
