Purpose of Paper Geophysics is a highly developed science which has found a wide use in industry. Perhaps the most spectacular application has been in the field of oil exploration. It has been estimated that, up to the end of 1939, geophysics was responsible for the discovery of five billion barrels of oil. In 1944, the sum o $40,000,000 was expended for geophysical work in the search for new oil deposits. Although the metal mining industry has so far made comparatively little use of the science, it is becoming increasingly common for the exploration engineer or geologist to be required to co-operate with the geophysicist. Many papers dealing with applied geophysics have been published but in most of them advanced training in physics and mathematics on the part of the reader has been assumed. It is difficult for the average engineer to obtain a ready understanding of the equipment, field procedure, and scope and limitations of the science from the literature. The present paper attempts to describe briefly and in simple terms the principles underlying magnetic, self-potential, and electrical resistivity methods and their application to a field problem. Introduction Geophysics is concerned with the study of gravity, magnetism, natural earth currents, earthquakes, vulcanism, and many other natural phenomena. The methods, originally devised for the measurement, for scientific purposes, of the forces associated with such phenomena have been adapted to the search for buried deposits of economic value. If the body sought has large dimensions and distinctive physical properties, geophysical measurements may reveal associated, and in some cases quite characteristic, anomalous features. However, in many instances the mass cannot be indicated directly but has a common association with geological features which can be defined by physical measurements. Although such surveys cannot specifically identify oil, metalliferous minerals, or other commercially valuable substances, it is possible to delineate anomalous sub-surface physical features which, with the help of geological information, can be assessed as possible or probable indications of the body or structure sought. The nature and extent of the material causing an anomaly, and its economic importance, can only be determined by further exploration, such as drilling.

"Nineteen streams in the copper and zinc flotation units of the concentrator of the Matagami Division of Noranda Inc. have been sampled f or particle size distributions, chemical assays, and gold and silver contents in each particle size interval. The data are upgraded by the mass balance package BILMA T. These results, in conjunction with microprobe analyses, are used to quantify the silver losses in the copper cleaning flotation stages and to determine how over-all silver and three silver-bearing minerals are recovered in the plant final products. "Countercurrent decantation circuits(CCD) are often employed in hydrometallurgy to effect solids-liquid separation in combination with a barren solution wash to reduce losses of valuable solution component(s) from the tails. Bechtel Corporation uses its BEMSIM flowsheet-modelling PC computer program to simulate a CCD circuit where the ""dirty"" wash solution contains significant amounts of soluble components. An algorithm successfully models this condition and is simplified to a single expression when the wash solution is a ""clean"" solution containing no solubles. The CCD calculation module is compared to operating data from uranium and nickel-cobalt CCD circuits.IntroductionHydrometallurgical process schemes have often relied on countercurrent washing methods to reduce soluble losses of valuable product in the tails. Commonly used equipment to effect this operation is a CCD circuit of N thickeners in series, where a slurry is fed to thickener I and a wash solution to thickener N; clear pregnant solution overflows thickener I and washed tails exit as underflow from thickener N. CCD circuits of this type are typically employed when the solids tend to slime heavily and where a filter is not economic.A typical CCD circuit usually employs from two to five thickeners and can employ either a ""clean"" washing solution of, say, pure water or else the hydrometallurgical circuit may generate a ""dirty"" barren solution containing an appreciable amount of soluble component which may be advantageously returned to the process as CCD wash solution. Various authors have treated the case for clean washing solutions (Svarkovsky 1977, Merritt 1970). For the case of dirty wash solutions, an algorithm has been developed to enable efficient modelling by the BEMSIM computer program, because the need for an accurate method to calculate soluble losses is required when performing an economic trade-off analysis of the value of product lost in the tails as a function of the number of thickeners."

Underhand cut and fill mining is being planned for selected areas at the David Bell Mine where high ground stresses have resulted in particularly challenging mining conditions. In order to test the placement and performance of a variety of underhand cut and fill paste mats three different designs have been installed and extensively instrumented along the A-Zone 9C ore sill. The sill is approximately 87m long, 4.0m high, and 5.0m average width. The sill was broken into 3 sections each of which will contain one of the sill mat designs. The underhand sill will be mined 3.75mW x 4.0mH, allowing for some overbreak while minimizing the risk of the back span exceeding the design limit of 4.0mW. Each test sill mat includes pre and post-support and includes 0.5m (18?) broken muck mat placed along the sill floor. Upon developing beneath these mats quantitative and qualitative measures will be used to determine which design is the most suitable for application in underhand mining at David Bell.

"Approximately 2.0 million tonnes of phosphate rock is imported from the U.S. to Alberta annually and is used in the production of agricultural fertilizers. No phosphate rock is presently mined in Canada, although sources of igneous phosphate have been mined in the past. Sedimentary phosphate rock is found in nine geological units within the Cordilleran Foothills and Front Ranges region of Alberta. The Devonian-Mississippian Exshaw Formation, Permo-Pennsylvanian Rocky Mountain Supergroup, and the Jurassic Fernie Formation have the best potential f or future development. Most of the phosphate rock in Alberta is of low grade and lies within restricted land use areas. The best over-all resource potential lies in the Fernie basin area of southeastern British Columbia, in the Fernie Formation. The possibility of deep phosphate rock deposits in the plains region should be examined.Phosphate rock is mined in Idaho, Utah, Montana and Florida, and is shipped to Canadian fertilizer plants for processing. Raw phosphate rock is acidified, usually with sulphuric acid, by a wet process. Varying amounts of ammonia are added, and the fertilizer is pelletized. Future research, in western Canada, is needed in the beneficiating of low-grade ores and in the area of in situ mining. At the present time, phosphate rock sells for around US$50Itonne, and Alberta fertilizer companies probably pay in the range of C$7D-$85Itonne for U.S. phosphate rock delivered to the plant. Environmental concerns about phosphate rock processing are centred around gypsum tailing ponds, and radioactive wastes.U.S. supplies of phosphate rock are secure until the year 2000; however, by this time, the richer deposits in the U.S. may be exhausted. Alternate deposits, such as the ones in Alberta and British Columbia, might then be considered. Phosphate byproducts, such as uranium, vanadium, fluorine and rare earth elements, may help in making the processing of low-grade Canadian phosphates economically feasible."

"The syngenetic and epigenetic mechanics of sedimentation and deformation of coal seams resulted in various types of internal structure, as listed below:TYPE I-massive structure with evenly distributed coal constituencies of integrated mechanical properties.TYPE II-broad-banded structure, with bright and dull coal bands of differential mechanical properties.TYPE III-heterogeneous structure, with sheared coal bands and partings of sectional mechanical properties.TYPE IV-contortional structure, with refolded coal layers and deteriorated mechanical properties.TYPE V-porous structure of orogenically crushed and pulverized coal, with disintegrated mechanical properties.The study suggests criteria for the estimation of coal seam internal structure (gamma-gamma density log and cracks density log), which might be related to the evaluation of strata stability and coal mineability.IntroductionIt is common knowledge that coal seams have various internal structures due to different syngenetic and epigenetic events. Investigations of the internal structure of coal seams have been carried out in the coal fields of Western Canada, as follows: geological field studies of coal-bearing strata;?,geophysical borehole surveying studies;?,geological borehole logging and crack density;?,underground phenomenological studies of mine structure;?,chemical coal analysis; and?,mechanical testing of coal samples.These investigations eliminated a large number of criteria previously established for the estimation of coal seam internal structure and indicated that, from an engineering point of view, only two of them are sufficient:(I) density of seam profile (inferred from gamma-gamma log);(2) density of crack s (inferred from geological log).On the basis of these criteria, five main structural types of coal seams have been classified, which might be related to mechanics of deformation and ' failure of mine structures."

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. "Placer Dome Inc. is the operator of the Musselwhite project located 100km north of Pickle Lake, Ontario. J.S. Redpath Limited was contracted to conduct an underground exploration program using shaft access.During the winter of1988, the shaft collar was established in 16 metres of water bearing sand and till overburden. This paper will illustrates the engineering techniques used to overcome the obstacles to installing a shaft collar in deep overburden. Specialized dewatering and piling procedures were employed.INTRODUCTIONHarold and Allan Musselwhite discovered gold in the Opapimiskan Lake area, north of Pickle Lake, in 1962. The prospectors were grubstaked by ten companies in 1973.A diamond drill program was initiated shortly thereafter.In 1983an underground ramp exploration program was carried out on the West Anticline portion of the property. The program was unsuccessful in establishing an ore reserve so surface exploration continued. In 1986the ""T"" zone was discovered. Further surface drilling was done and an over-all drill-indicated reserve of 6 million tonnes at 7 grams per tonne was outlined. The gold mineralization occurs in several vertical tabular deposits within the iron formation. In late 1987the joint venture partnership, now consisting of Placer Dome Inc., Inco Gold Co., Corona Corporation and Esso Minerals Canada, contracted J.S. Redpath Limited to conduct an underground exploration program on the ""T"" Zone.The scope of work for the project was to: 1. establish a 45 km winter road in 1988 and 1989;"

"Since the late 1970s, extensive work has been carried out at Placer Dome Inc. 's Dome Mine to develop new mining methods and equipment to improve the productivity of narrow vein mining (Mining Magazine, Oct. 1986, pp. 308-317; Mar. 1988, pp. 176-/79). This work has been focused on mining veintype deposits varying from 0.9 m to 1.5 m in width using open stoping and cut-and-fill mining methods.In 1989, the Dome Mine entered into a contract with Ram Raising Ltd., a joint venture company of Angus Martin and I.S. Redpath Ltd., to develop and mine a narrow vein test stope using an Alimak Raise Climber. Early results have been favourable, indicating that Alimak methods can be used successfully to mine narrow vein are.HistoryThe Dome Mine, which has been in continuous operation since 1910, is located in South Porcupine, part of the city of Timmins, Ontario. The mine is wholly-owned and operated by Placer Dome Inc. and is part of Placer Dome Inc.'s international stable of of 19 mines."

The Mantaro Phosphate Property is located ~ 250 km east of Lima, Peru in the Andean altiplano near the city of Huancayo, Junin District. The Mantaro deposit is a mineralized zone of phosphatic rock currently defined by surface outcrops, trenches and drilling extending over a strike length of more than 30 km and a width of more than 5 km covering ~27,700 hectares. Mineralization is exposed as three roughly parallel exposures (?mantos?) trending in a northwest-southeast direction along the Mancaspico syncline. Estimated mineral resources1 contained in Manto 1 of the Property (4% P2O5 cut-off) as of February 21, 2010, are: Measured 5.548 million tonnes @ 10.8% P2O5 Indicated 33.975 million tonnes @ 9.9% P2O5 Measured + Indicated 39.523 million tonnes @ 10.0 % P2O5 Inferred² 376.265 million tonnes @ 9.0% P2O5 1Tonnes rounded to the nearest 1,000 and grade to 1 decimal place. 2Inferred material reported with no cut-off and an assumed grade. There is considerable potential to expand the resource base. Mantos 2 and 3 of the deposit have been geologically mapped and exhibit surface mineralization widths similar to Manto 1. Given that the deposit is of marine sedimentary origin, it is reasonable to infer that comparable grades and depth of mineralization are present within Mantos 2 and 3. Based on this assumption, the potential mineral deposits within Mantos 2 and 3 are estimated to be approximately: Manto 2 425-435 million tonnes @ 9% P2O5 Manto 3 280-290 million tonnes @ 9 % P2O5 These potential quantities and grade are conceptual in nature, there has been insufficient exploration to define a mineral resource and it is uncertain if further exploration will result in these targets being delineated as a mineral resource. However, should such conceptual resources be confirmed by trenching and drilling, the Mantaro Phosphate Property would rank as one of the most significant phosphate deposits in the world.

"Sam Goosly prospect, 22 miles southeast of Houston, B.C., was discovered in 1967 through geochemical reconnaissance. Soil sampling interpreted with respect to an east-to-west ice movement led to drilling targets.Mineralization is in a window of rocks thought to be Hazelton Group surrounded by Tertiary volcanic rocks and intruded by two stocks separated by about one mile. A westerly quartz monzonite stock is dated 61.1 m.y. and an easterly gabbro-monzonite complex is dated 52.5 m.y. The Tertiary volcanics are trachyandesites shown by the B.C. Department of Mines and Petroleum Resources to be in part extrusive equivalents of the gabbro, and they overlie Hazelton rocks uncomformably. Copper-molybdenum mineralization is sparsely developed in the westerly stock. Silver-copper mineralization forms an elongate west-dipping slab between the stocks in Hazelton rocks, which are continuously pyritized. The gabbro stock is not mineralized, but some dikes related to it are slightly so. Tertiary rocks are pyritized, but are not known to carry copper-silver mineralization. Hazelton rocks are divided into a lower conglomerate, an intermediate pyroclastic unit and an upper mainly sedimentary unit. They form a west-facing homocline. Coppersilver mineralization resides in the pyroclastic unit, mainly in a massive dust tuff through which are lenticular units of lapilli tuff. Well-mineralized rock is typically a breccia of light fragments in a dark chlorite-sulphide matrix. Sulphides are pyrite, chakopyrite and locally pyrrhotite, with very minor tetrahedrite, s phalerite and other sulphosalts. Rock alteration is predominantly a pervasive pyrite-sericite type, with widespread tourmaline, scorzalite, gypsum, ankerite and traces of fluorite. The most evident control of the copper-silver mineralization is the gross parallelism, over a strike length of 1.5 miles, to Hazelton strata, particularly a massive dust .tuff unit. In detail, mineralization crosscuts bedding and there is no appreciable banding within sulphides . A strictly syngenetic origin is untenable, but some initial concentration in a volcanogenic environment with subsequent modification by thermal processes seems likely."

Since the beginning of time, people later to be known as engineers and architects have strained to create methods whereby they could improve technology to assist them in their various fields of endeavour. Some of these improvements would be the change from linen paper, french chalk and ink pens to drafting film , mylar an d pencil for the production of drawings, the drafting machine in lieu of the tee and set squares, even tap e to attach drafting media to the board instead of thumb tacks and man y, man y more. All of these taken individually are insignificant but combined evolve to the current state-of-the-art in the computerized engineering environment. Ten years ago the major topic o f conversation was the hand-held calculator which for a cost of around $150 would give most trigonometric functions. Today the equivalent calculator can be purchased for around $25, is about one third the size, and if inflation were included over the last ten year s the item should cost around $550 in today' s dollars, it can be seen that tremendous advances not only in the technology but also the cost saving. The following paper is intended to outline some o f the significant aspects o f the latest technology in the computerized engineering office namely Interactive Graphics Systems.

"Nanisivik Mines Ltd. operates a 10-M W diesel-electric generating plant at its zinc-lead operation on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. This paper provides a description of the plant and the integrated waste heat recovery system. Data is presented detailing the actual costs of operating a plant over a period of seven years. Problems in operation are described as well as the success of the plant in meeting its objectives over the years. IntroductionNanisivik is located on the shore of Strathcona Sound at the north end of Baffin Island (Fig. I). Nanisivik Mines Ltd. has operated a 2,100 tonne per day zinc-lead underground mine and a concentrator, together with supporting infrastructure, at this location since October 1976. Annual production of 100 000 tonnes of zinc and 10 000 tonnes of lead concentrate is transported by ship to Europe during the mid -July to mid October shipping season.All electrical needs of the project are provided by the company-owned and -operated power plant. Facilities served by this electrical system are the underground mining areas, the concentrator and industrial area, a townsite, airport, and shiploading dock complex."

"This paper will identify where the industry is heading with iron· ore in the next ten years. From a customer's point of view, an indication of the changing, yet expanding, market will be made. This will progress further into the most likely changes in chemical and physical requirements of the ore products. No definite target can be set for 1990, but the logic from the direction of the changes will be established.IntroductionThe tonnage and quality of iron ore produced in the eighties will be heavily influenced by energy and investment considerations. That's not a great pronouncement, but this paper will explain how these two factors are :(I) influencing a disproportionate growth of electric furnace capacity and a greater use of scrap for iron units, in place of Iron ore;(2) influencing chemistry specifications; and(3) causing extensive examination of ore agglomerate form. Inflating investment costs are emphasizing the need for more productive blast furnaces, and the iron ore burden is under heavy examination as to how it affects productivity and coke rate."

"Rational exploration requires the prior selection of areas possessing excellent geological potential and minimum hazards to commercial development . Within an over-all strategy of grass-roots exploration, two procedures for selecting areas for (i) coal and (ii) metals exploration are described. The procedures explicitly balance infrastructure requirements and environmental concerns for areas of geological merit not alienated in parks and reserves. Through consensus, priorities are attached to those areas meriting closer scrutiny and field reconnaissance.IntroductionMining companies need to know that having made a potentially economic discovery, they will be allowed to develop it with minimum delay and at reasonable cost. The environment for exploration in British Columbia is complex and recent experience suggests that conditions are not becoming any easier. Conflicts over land use issues, preservation and economic development are common. The high cost of exploration requires that the risks should be offset where possible by: (i) carefully selecting the areas in which to work (ii) conducting operations in a responsible manner, and (iii) working cooperatively with the community of interests. This paper concerns the first action: prior selection of areas.To aid exploration planning at Suncor, a procedure was developed to grade those areas of the province possessing favourable geology according to the ease with which a mine might be developed . This had to be done within the constraints of the company's over-all approach to exploration. This emphasizes ""grass-roots"" exploration of self-generated projects in British Columbia. In addition, having selected a favourable belt of rocks, it is intended to persevere there while steadily adding to the accumulated data base and local experience. Hence, it is intended to concentrate on an area. This implies a long-term commitment to an area which in turn increases the importance of the original selection.Suncor's search is directed to finding base and precious metals in intrusive and volcanic environments, and export quality coal."

Abstract - The Lupin mine, located in the central Slave province just east of the western boundary of Nunavut Territory, is a world-class example of a Neoarchean-aged banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted lode-gold deposit. At the minesite the gold-mineralized Lupin BIF, separating stratigraphically underlying psammitic wacke and overlying argillaceous turbidite sequences, delineates the Lupin dome, a hammerhead-shaped F2/F3 interference fold structure occurring at the greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphic transition within the thermal aureole of the Contwoyto batholith. Detailed paragenetic relationships indicate that peak thermal metamorphism coincided with the switch from regional D2 compression to rapid D3 unroofing of the Neoarchean orogenic infrastructure. Gold initially precipitated with pyrrhotite, replacing amphibolitic BIF at the apex of the Lupin deformation zone, separating the east and west lobes of the Contwoyto batholith. Over the course of associated prograde/retrograde metasomatic overprints, gold was further remobilized during garnet and loellingite/arsenopyrite growth in chlorite-altered selvages of late-forming ladder quartz veins. A metamorphic model of ore genesis, with gold being scavenged and transported by metamorphic fluid that was shed and structurally trapped at the amphibolite recrystallization front, is favored over the previously proposed syngenetic and exogenic models of gold concentration that have tended to polarize genetic interpretations to date.

Early attempts to manufacture titanium aluminides using blended elemental powders, through powder metallurgical processes, have been obstructed due to serious swelling during sintering. Although the use of pre-alloyed powder can avoid this undesired expansion problem, there are limited commercial powder sources available. Therefore, in the present research, fundamental studies on the synthesis of dual-phase (? plus a2) Ti48Al intermetallic materials is undertaken, in particular assessing powder manufacture. In order to produce pre-alloyed powders, highly porous Ti48Al pieces are initially sintered from elemental Ti and Al powder blends, and subsequently pulverised into powders. The powder size is then further reduced by use of either dry or wet milling processes (i.e. shatterbox grinding, attrition, or ball milling). Among these methods, shatterbox grinding has shown the highest efficiency, with a slight mechanical alloying effect observed. "This paper describes the investigation of a large, progressive slope failure on the southeast wall of the east pit at Highmont Mine, British Columbia Geotechnical investigation s consisted of geological and structural mapping, assessment of blasthole drilling records, review of rock core information, slope movement monitoring and back analysis of various possible failure modes. Climate records and mining history were also assessed to determine their relationship to slope movement .Analysis of movement monitoring records and geotechnical information indicates that the failure is deep seated. The upper portion of the failure surf ace occurs along clay filled discontinuities. The lower portion of the failure surf ace appears to occur through the highly altered rock mass. High groundwater pressures and mining at the toe of the slope are documented to have had a major influence on stability at various times during the failure. Stability analyses results are presented and possible remedial measures are discussed.IntroductionHighmont Mine is located near Logan Lake in the Highland Valley approximately 50 km southwest of Karnloops, British Columbia (Fig. I). Mining of the porphyry copper and molydenum ore bodies began in 1980. In May, 1983, when mining in the east pit had progressed to a depth of about 60 m (200 feet) , a failure (designated the Southeast Failure) began to develop in the southeast corner of the east pit. Subsequent mining to a depth of 110m (360 feet) was accompanied by frequent and substantial slope movements involving between 500000 and I 000 000 m3 of rock . The slope was monitored extensively to assess short-term movement trends for operational safety. Geological mapping, core logging and rock mechanics testing were used in conjunction with the long-term monitoring information to determine the failure mechanism, conduct stability analyses, assess the effects of instability on pit design and enable design and installation of remedial measures."

"Theoretical notions of mass transfer processes in cascade separation of bulk materials have not been adequately developed as yet (Barsky M.D. 1980). In this paper we have derived linear difference equation of the second order for a cascade with initial feeding top any stage proceeding from mass exchange regularities. The solution of these equations has allowed us to determine quantitative dependences of the material distribution over the cascade stages, which serve the basis of the method of predictive estimate of the process results. We have also examined the model of the material distribution coefficient formation at individual cascade stages.We have checked the adequacy of this model to experimental data. It is noteworthy that the obtained theoretical results are phenomenological, i.e. they can be applied to the processes of separation of different physical nature, e.g. of isotopes, liquid media, gases, etc.INTRODUCTIONRecently, the processes of cascade separation of bulk materials have found broad application in various industries. They ensure a high separation efficiency and high-quality composition of final products. Although specialized literature gives serious attention to cascade processes [1], their theory is not sufficiently developed yet. To achieve optimal organization of this process, we examine mass transfer in a cascade gravitational classifier with stages of identical design."
