The presence of xenon isotopes from in-situ spontaneous fission of short-lived Pu244 has been confirmed in Hadean detrital zircons from Western Australia. Hadean and meteoritic zircons can retain secondary overgrowths developed after primary cristalization at 3.97-3.94 Gyr. On the moon, the metal grain in sample 66095,78 is mantled by troilite, schreibersite and cohenite. High chlorine content FeCl2 is deposited around metallic FeNi. The magnitude of Pollonium-210 to Radon-222 on the Aristarchus plateau spectrum indicates a past greater activity. The Earth Moon system from Nb/Ta systematics is consistent with a Moon iron core delayed to 3,9 Gyr.

"The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing and the Nisto deposit are located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin. They are probably unconformity-related. These occurrences tend to be small. The Fond-du-Lac and Maurice Bay deposits are the largest and contain 450,000 kg and 650,000 kg of U10 8 respectively.Pitchblende is the main uranium mineral of all the occurrences, except at Middle Lake where autunite predominates. A II of the deposits are overlain and partially hosted by the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group, except the Nisto deposit which is entirely within basement rocks, and the Maurice Bay deposit which is partially within the basement and overlying the Fair Point Formation of the Athabasca Group.The North Rim deposits are considered to be genetically similar to the other unconformity-type deposits found in northern Saskatchewan. It is suggested that a mechanical concentration of uranium may have occurred in heavy mineral beach sand type placers. The stability of the uranium minerals may have been enhanced by special local conditions. The fossil placers, after hydrothermal alteration and enrichment, would form the apparently ""rootless"" occurrences of uranium found totally within the sandstones above the unconformity.IntroductionAt least five deposits and showings and one train of mineralized glacial erratics of unknown provenance have been located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin from Maurice Bay in the west to Black Lake in the east. Distributed over a distance of 250 km, (Fig. l), they occur near the edge of the Basin, and are probably unconformity-related. The following have been identified from west to east (Fig. 2): The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Isle Brochet train, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing, and the Nisto deposit."

Core drilling is a fundamental process in the mineral exploration industry. As deep exploration in hard rocks is accelerated due to the depletion of near ground mineral resources, deep-drilling operations need to reduce their reliance in operators experience and begin to implement new technologies in order to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the overall process. Currently, lack of real-time information on the bit/rock interaction is a major problem. Therefore the mechanism behind the acoustic emission, which is a proven technique for remote monitoring, generation in mechanical rock cutting must be understood in order to provide real time information about the rock. This paper aims to identify the influence of mineral composition of granitic rocks on the acoustic emission (AE) during rock abrasivity test with a single contact tool and to evaluate the feasibility of AE as a means to infer Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI). Single contact tool will provide precise and accurate description of the source of AE. To provide constant grooving speed Cerchar apparatus was modified to monitor AE during rock/tool interaction. Tests on the modified Cerchar apparatus are carried out under the static load of 70N and cutting speed of 1 mm/s. A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is utilized to visualize the groove in the rock and to identify the mineral composition through Back-Scattered Electrons (BSE) reflected from the rock sample. Based on the microscope images, it was found that biotite shows a larger groove area and plate-like fractures accompanied with burst-type AE signal, whereas plagioclase and quartz, which are characterized by similar hardness and BSE brightness, possess shattered-like fractures and more continuous-type AE signals. In addition, a-value of the Gutenberg-Richter scale has been found to well correlate with Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI).

"AbstractA new electromagnetic depth sounding technique was applied to the measurement of salt thickness above the workings in the Central Canada Potash Mine at Colonsay, Saskatchewan. The initial tests indicate that this new technique can measure salt thickness and that the technique possesses operational feature s which make it possible to monitor trends in salt thickness throughout the mine. The technique can be applied using existing equipment, but the tests do indicate the desirability of developing equipment with features specially suited to the mine environment.IntroductionTESTS were conducted in the Central Canada Potash Mine at Colonsay, Saskatchewan during 1974 and 1975 to determine if a new technique in electromagnetic depth sounding could provide a convenient means of measuring salt thickness above the workings. This new technique, which was described by Duckworth (1975), offers operational features which appear to be advantageous in this particular situation.The problem requires that soundings be made upward from the mine workings to the base of the second red shale. This shale forms an impermeable seal on top of the Prairie Evaporite. A knowledge of this salt thickness is of interest due to the need to avoid any possibility of the workings rising to cut the red shale. Another desirable objective is the detection of any disruptions of the red shale. Ideally, this should be done ahead of the workings in order that such areas of disruption may be avoided."

"How well is the Canadian coal industry able to expand in the tough competition with other fuels in Canada and with other suppliers in the international, metallurgical and thermal coal trade? Coal production as a whole decreased between 1950and 1960 and, although there has been a tripling of production since then, underground production continued to decrease until 1975. This trend has been reversed to a certain extent as a result of the modernization of mines in Cape Breton, but in 1978 over 85% of coal production came from surface mining.Against this background, the paper reviews current Canadian mining operations as described in papers presented at the 1979 CIM Annual General Meeting. Conclusions are then drawn regarding some of the longer-term mining applications in relation to the latest coal demand forecast, which indicates a potential Canadian production requirement of 160 million tonnes per year by 2000. IntroductionThe Canadian 'coal industry is experiencing a period of expansion and a new record for production is set with each passing year. This growth pattern over the last IS years has been based on two main markets-the generation of electricity in Canada and the export of coking coal to Japan. Supply to those markets has entailed either the development of mining, coal preparation and transportation systems for the delivery of large volumes of products with predetermined specifications or the establishment of minesite plants designed specifically to suit the characteristics of the coal in the adjacent deposits (Fig. I).Coal is a low-value commodity in relation to its bulk, and the economics of coal use become progressively less attractive with increasing distance from the producing mine. The transportation component in the export trade and in the movement of western coal to Ontario is a major cost factor. In the latter case, it approaches the cost of coal produced at the mine. In addition, the .international competition among coking coal producers chasing diminishing markets in a worldwide steel recession as well as the competition from U.S. coals and other fuel s for Canadian thermal coal have introduced a tight set of parameters to govern mining practices in all parts of the country. Some appreciation of the required changes in mining techniques brought about by declining traditional markets and the rigorous demands of the new bulk markets can be gained by comparing production from surface and underground mines over the past 25 years (Fig . 2)."

"The most cost-effective method of placement of the high strength fill used in the Cannon Mine' s overhand cut-and-f ill bench stopes was determined to be truck haulage. Constraint s imposed by the mine layout dictated the use of a truck which could dump its load in a fifteen-foot high drift. The Dux Teledumper truck was selected as the most suitable unit for this application based upon operational and maintenance parameters which included a telescoping, tilting dump box; large load capacity; and robust construction. Development of the truck continues through the cooperation between the manufacturer and user. INTRODUCTIONThe Cannon Mine is situated in the centre of Washington state, approximately midway between the cities of Spokane on the east and Seattle on the west. The mine complex is located three block s south of the Wenatchee city limits at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountain range.Asam era Minerals (U.S.) Inc., with 5I% ownership, operates the Cannon Mine. Breakwater Resources, Ltd. holds the remaining 49%.Annual paroduction is 520 000 tons per year, presently on a 21-shift per week operating schedule for both the mine and the mill.All production is presently won by overhand bench stoping with backfill. Stoping starts with 15-ft high by 24- or 30-ft wide sill cuts driven above and below a stope block . A drop rai se and slot are used to open a bench which is then slabbed toward the open slot. Truck-placed backfill is dumped into the mined - out stope from the upper sill cut. This stoping sequence is repeated until the top of the ore block is reached . The top sill cut is then tightly filled with backfill to minimize subsidence and to provide adequate roof support during extraction of the pillars.Mining equipment consists of hydraulic drills and rubber-tired, diesel scoops and trucks."

Canadian copper, nickel, zinc, lead and molybdenum mines are characterized by the mining of ores from which more than one metal is recovered. During the 1980s, approximately 15% of the gold, 25% of the zinc, 30% of the copper, 55% of the molybdenum, 80% of the silver and 90% of the lead produced from Canadian mines were produced as co-products and by-products of base metal mining operations. This trend is not expected to change significantly in the near future. The presence of co-products and by-products affects the level of production and the level of revenue from base metal mines in several ways: (I) in general, production of one base metal cannot be expanded or cut back without affecting the amount of production of another metal;(2) the commercial success of certain base metal mining operations depends on the substantial bonus revenues from co-products and by-products; (3) the quality and economic viability of many ore deposits are significantly improved by the presence of co-products and by-products; and (4) while coproduction is critical to the survival of some mines, bonus revenue from by-products can also be life saving to others during economic downturns. For these reasons, deposits with significant co-product or by-product values are likely to continue to be significant targets for exploration and for acquisition.

"A computer program is described which will analyze the stability of coal pillars. The extent of the peripheral failed zone and the central elastic core of the pillar, the stress distribution across the pillar and its strength can be determined by a ""sliceby- slice"" analysis technique. The program incorporates a brittle/pseudo-ductile transition point so that a pillar may fail by brittle fracture or pseudo-ductile yield. It is shown that:(i) There is a minimum pillar stress below which fracture cannot initiate; hence there is a minimum pillar strength. (ii) In specific circumstances (narrow pillars) , once fracture initiates at the pillar edge it must propagate immediately to the pillar centre. This unstable situation is called ""catastrophic"" failure and might be regarded as a model of a pillar ""burst "". (iii) For wider pillars, the failed zone ex tends gradually into the pillar as the loading increases until it reaches the pillar centre when the pillar is deemed to have f ailed. This is called the point of ""ultimate"" failure.The critical pillar widths to avoid catastrophic and ultimate failure can be calculated.A hypothetical analysis of five rib pillars is given to illustrate the application and the results obtained from the model. The model is then used to analyze three case histories taken from the literature. The first demonstrates the applicability of the brittle/pseudo-ductile failure criteria for Pittsburgh coal. The second compares the pillar strength formulae derived here with those of Salamon and Munro(13) and Bieniawskiou . The final case history compares the model analysis with field stress measurements in a yielding pillar. In all cases the model results are compatible with the case histories."

Copper occurs invisibly in a geo-logical environment characterized by swampy conditions and an accumulation of forest peat. This swamp, located in southeastern New Brunswick, contains up to ten per cent cop-per (dry weight), in the organic sediments. This occurrence appears unique in that the metal is apparently organically combined in a chelate compound. Unlike the acidic nature of most peat bogs, the pH of the cup-riferous peat is nearly neutral. Analyses of the peat and associated soils have indicated that the bulk of the copper is contained in the organic sediments. It appears that the cop-per distribution is affected by capillarity, evaporation and the growth of frost crystals, and that the copper fixation is effected by organic sequestration resulting in the metal being bound to the nitrogen or oxygen components of the forest peat. While such a fixation mechanism is not definitely established as responsible for the immobilization of the metal, the facts at hand are compatible with

"This study investigated the psychrometric properties of ventilating air in GAL coal mines. Related measurements were done in underground openings and have been arranged as input data for computer programs prepared for ventilation network and psychrometric analysis.Results obtained from network analysis have been used for psychrometric analysis of ventilating air. Changes in heat and moisture content of air in two major path s between entry and discharge of ventilating air have been investigated. Psychrometric processes occurring in the mine were determined and are shown graphically in Figures 1 and 2. Special attention has been given to determine the changes in psychrometric properties and processes involved in the faces. Results are outlined in this paper.IntroductionThe psychrometric properties of mine air are important factors to mine productivity and efficiency. Therefore, psychrometric analysis should be made for all underground mines; any undesired situation observe d could be corrected by taking the necessary precautions.The analyses were done as a case study for GAL mines, the only mechanized lignite coal mine in Turkey. In this mine, workable reserve is about 300 million tons of coal and yearly planned production is 2.2 million tons. Production is continuing from a coal measure-bed having two coal seams with average thicknesses of 1.52 m and 1.72 m respectively. A 0.85 m shale band exists between these two seams.Two full y-mechanized faces, approximately 220 m long, usually work simultaneously. All measurements, including mine gases and air velocity, are done by sensors connected to a control room by a monitoring system.In the analysis, a line diagram is utilized to described the mine on which every junction and branch is numbered."

"The Agnew Lake uranium deposits were discovered in 1953 following the discovery of the Elliot Lake deposits to the west. The original property was optioned to Kerr Addison Mines Limited who added additional claims by staking. Agnew Lake Mines Limited was incorporated in 1967 to develop the property and a shaft was sunk to 1040 metres and five levels developed before work was suspended due to low uranium prices at the end of1970.In 1974-75 the mine was dewatered and production started in 1977. By 1978 reserves were estimated at 10,000,000 tonnes averaging 0.35 kg. U10 , per tonne. Underground operations were terminated in 1980 although a uranium leaching operation was continued until early 1983.The deposits lie near the contact of Huronian metasediments with underlying Algoman granite. The sediments consist of arkose, conglomerate, argillite and quartzite with the uranium mineralogy mainly confined to oligomictic quartz pebble conglomerate. The higher uranium values are related to conglomerate with highest percentage of pebbles. The chief uranium minerals are uranothorite and monazite. It is of interest that the uranium thorium ratio differs appreciably from that of the Elliot Lake deposits. This fact along with the fact that the Elliot Lake sediments were deposited by paleocurrents from the northwest whereas the Agnew Lake sediments were deposited by paleocurrents from the northeast indicates widely separate sources for the deposits. It is suggested that the Agnew Lake uranium deposits are syngenetic placers deposited under anoxygenic atmospheric conditions."

"Three varieties of till are recognized in the Beardmore-Geraldton area: local lodgement till, nonlocal carbonate till, and local supraglacial till. The local lodgement till unit is examined in detail for the first time in this paper. It is the best potential overburden exploration medium for gold and other metals because its particles were locally-derived and deposited subglacially, probably within a few kilometres downglacier (southwestward) from their sources, and have not been diluted by distantly-derived glacialdebris. Both local tills are richer in gold and other metals, relative to nonlocal carbonate till. Local lodgement till rests on bedrock and was encountered frequently at or near the surface in thin drift/bedrock terrain (a widespread terrain type within the west half of the study area), and commonly at the base of boreholes in thick till terrain.INTRODUCTIONDrift prospecting in areas of glaciated terrain has been well documented (in a variety of journal publications and symposium volumes; e.g . Strobel and Faure 1987; MacDonald and Mills 1988) and has proven valuable especially where overburden thicknesses hinder traditional exploration techniques. Drift prospecting techniques may well prove valuable in the Beardmore Geraldton area. This applies especially to the Wildgoose Lake Turkey Lake area where a thick and laterally extensive sheet of nonlocal carbonate till has impeded conventional mineral exploration programs (Fig. I; note the lack of gold occurrences around Wildgoose Lake).Till in .particular has been cited as the best prospecting medium among the various types of glacial sediment (e.g. Shilts 1984). Three end member till varieties are recognized in the study area: (I) local lodgement till which rests directly on bedrock; (2) non local carbonate till; and (3) local supraglacial till which occurs predominatly within, or just downglacier of, upland areas where it commonly mantles the other till varieties. Previous authors have documented how the non local carbonate till hinders gold exploration (Geddes and Kristjansson 1986; Karrow and Geddes 1987; Kristjansson 1986; Hicock 1986, 1987a, b, 1988; Kristjansson and Thorieifson 1987; Thorleifson and Kristjansson 1987, 1988a, b) and why the local supraglacial till may be a good unit for prospecting (Hicock 1986). One detailed surficial geology map sheet of the area has been published (Kristjansson et al., 1988) and others are in preparation. Closs and Sado (1981) reported on the geochemistry of soils and glacial sediments in the west half of the study area. This paper documents the local lodgement till unit and demonstrates why it is the best overburden unit to use for drift prospecting."

"The design, development, and verification of the Lovat 7.6metre diameter full-face tunnel-boring machine is reviewed. Programmatic and technical challenges are outlined with a review of the specifications and the design to meet these requirements. Subsystem designs are presented for the waste material removal, ventilation, cutter head, structural support, advance technique, water removal, and interfaces with the Donkin-Morien Mine. The techniques used to verify that the design meets the requirements is by testing in the Lovat factory and in the field. Certification of the machine for use in a methane environment is discussed.IntroductionStudies have concluded that the average annual worldwide tunnel construction is 500 kilometres at an estimated average co st of $3,400 U.S . per linear metre. The total market value of the tunnelling industry is estimated as approximately $1.7 billion U.S. per annum. Of this, the current market for tunnelboring machine excavation is approximately $270 million U.S. per annum worldwide with a further potential of $250 million if more contractors are convinced that Tunnel-Boring Machines (TBM) are more suitable than conventional techniques. The worldwide civil tunnelling market has the potential to double each year in the next 5 to 15 years. Growth has been identified in the energy and mineral resources sectors of the economies of many nations and a significant volume of machine tunnelling studies and trials are presently underway for the extraction of coal, uranium , heavy oil or oil sand fuels, metallic and non-metallic industrial minerals and base metal or rare earth ores. Further tunnel projects for regional transportation, waterpower, irrigation , high density urban transportation, storm water sewers and water supply purposes are continually being implemented with new concepts like military security facilities and underground storage schemes being considered.Lo vat Tunnel Equipment of Rexdale, Ontario, the only Canadian manufacturer of TBMs was incorporated in 1973 to manufacture so ft ground tunnel-boring machines to satisfy this growing market demand. "This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of the mechanical properties of the shales and greywackes which constitute the flysch-type deposits of the Baixo Alentejo Flysch Group, in the south of Portugal. These formations are flysch-type deposits constituted by sequences of usually thick greywacke beds alternating with thin shale beds, which include sometimes intercalations of conglomerate beds. All the sedimentation of these flysch formations was controlled by tectonics. At the same time, should have occurred along with the first Hercynian deformation phase, a low-grade metamorphic event (chlorite zone), that affected these flysch deposits. This study highlights the influence of anisotropy and heterogeneity of these flysch rocks on their physical and mechanical characteristics. The anisotropy verified in some physical properties and on mechanical properties, due to the foliation makes difficult the sample preparation for the laboratory tests. Besides, it induces a scattering of the properties values measured, as for example, the strength and the deformability. The heterogeneity is related to the main features of these geological formations, which are constituted mostly by thinly stratified greywackes and shale beds, which sometimes may affect the results of the laboratory tests making them less representative. The study is made by using both shales and greywackes that constitute these flysch-type deposits in order to evaluate their geotechnical properties, mainly of the shales. Samples of these two rock materials, are tested accordingly a laboratory testing programme, which includes which included mineralogical analysis (X-ray diffraction), physical tests (bulk density, porosity, and void index) and mechanical tests (uniaxial compression, and deformability tests). INTRODUCTIONOne of the factors that most influence the geomechanical behavior of rocks, as well as rock masses is the anisotropy. The word anisotropy comes from two Greek words ""anisos"" (meaning uneven) and ""tropos"" (meaning direction). A body or material is considered to be anisotropic, where the same property has different values depending in which direction it is measured, therefore, an anisotropic material is one whose magnitude of the properties depends on the direction in which these are studied or measured. Otherwise, it is about an isotropic material. However, the fully isotropic materials are quite rare in nature."

This article is directed co a commentary on the patent system in its relation to the public interest. As man gained supremacy over his environment, he could devote progressively increasing portions o his time to improving his standards of living. In the history of the human race, we have advanced from the hollowed floating log to the modern steamship of the present age; from the sickle and flail to the reaper and combine; from the trumpet and drum as a means of communication co the telegraph, telephone, and radio; from the horse and ox cart to the automobile, truck, aeroplane, and train; and so on ad infinitum through the list of inventions on which are based the industrial and political economies and standards of living we enjoy today. It has also been a long road from the day of the alchemist and his closely guarded secrets to the era of the patent system and its storehouses of knowledge open to the world. The alchemist and the craft and merchant guilds closely guarded their secrets. In fact, they largely opposed innovations on the grounds that they might injure profits and restrict employment. In these days of unrest, with great clamour out of doors for radical changes in our political and industrial economies, it may not be untimely to examine one of the keystones which support the economic structure we know as the free enterprise system, the system which is predicated upon the right of the individual to own property. Many, through impractical idealism, ignorance, confused thinking, or blind political prejudice, advocate the substitution of ownership by the State ? for the right of ownership by the individual. As civilization has advanced to the high standards of living we enjoy today through the efforts of a comparatively few inventors, the patent system which has provided the incentive that created the inventions on which our industries and our employment are based is fully understood and appreciated by a comparatively small percentage of our people. As a result, the patent system, as a keystone in our free enterprise economy, is an apt target for destructive criticism, with the thought, possibly, that by eliminating or drastically restricting the several rights to individual ownership one by one, ownership by the State will progressively replace ownership by the individual.

Cemented Paste Backfill has proven to be of critical importance to the operation of a number of Canadian mines, primarily due to the rapid backfilling rate this method permits. In order to improve the efficiency of this backfill system (i.e. optimize binder contents, fill fence design, and the employment of two stage filling strategies) there is a requirement to better understand its geomechanical behaviour. In response, in-situ experiments have been conducted in long-hole stopes to quantify the evolution of total earth pressures and pore pressures at a series of instrumented points within both the core of the backfill and close to fill fences. The deflection of fill fences as a result of paste loading has been measured and additional instrumentation has also been employed to measure cement hydration, negative pore pressures, and blasting induced vibrations within fresh and cured paste backfill. Installing geotechnical instrumentation within an open long-hole stope can be an extremely complex procedure and this paper details the methods that have been successfully employed. Preliminary results are presented, and the pressures induced by backfill with differing binder contents, at a number of different in-stope locations are considered.

The use of geological and grade block models has been standard practice in mine design for many years now, with a wide range of software available for creation and analysis. Although geotechnical parameters are of vital importance to mine planning there is very little in the way of commercially available systems for integrating geotechnical data into the mine planning and design process. Sirovision is a new technology developed by the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) in Australia for automated, safe and accurate 3D mapping of geological and geotechnical features. Datamine has integrated this capability into its product range so that Sirovision has become an integral part of the day-to-day mapping, mine geology and geological / geotechnical modeling in both open pit and underground mine environments. This is the first integrated underground application of Sirovision from Datamine collaboration with Xstrata Nickel at the Nickel Rim South Project. NORTH-CENTRAL United States is now, and will continue to be, a natural market for Canadian crude oil. This area is a natural market for many basic reasons. There are no physical barriers along the border of our countries. This market is in dose proximity to Canadian production. This market is already joined by crude oil pipe-1,ines to numerous producing areas of Canada. The tariff barriers are reasonable. We are not handicapped by mandatory quota restrictions. There are many of us who desire lo sell Canadian crude oil in this market. Further, and what is really important, there are many of us who desire to buy Canadian crude oil for this market. It is fundamental that for crude oil to be sold in the world market, it must ?be sold at competitive prices. At the same time, it is important that such competitive price must result in a fair price for the crude oil at the we1lhead. The factors of nearness to market, cheap pipe line transportation, and reasonable United States tariffs, all tend to make ?possible a competitive market and a fair wellhead price.

DURING the summer of 1942 several chromite deposits were discovered in the Lac du Bonnet district about eighty miles northeast of Winnipeg. The deposits are confined to the Bird River complex, a folded composite sill of basic and ultrabasic igneous rocks of early Precambrian age that lies to the north of Bird river (1). The outcrop of the sill represents the trace of an easterly plunging anticline, the south limb extending from the northeast bay of Lac du Bonnet eastward to Bird lake, and the other limb, 6 to 12 miles north, lying between Maskwa river and Euclid lake. The south limb of the sill is 20 miles long, and the northern counterpart 15 miles; but its continuity is interrupted by faulting and by the intrusion of younger granite, so that the total length of outcrop of both limbs does not likely exceed 25 miles. The sill is intrusive into early Precambrian greenstones and associated sedimentary rocks. The chromite discoveries have been made at several localities on both limbs of the sill, and in each case at the same geological horizon. The sill comprises an upper layer of hornblende gabbro and a lower layer of serpentinized peridotite, and altogether is from 500 to 3,500 feet thick. The chromite zone is within and near the top of the peridotite layer, and thus about midway of the sill, both of the limbs of which stand nearly vertical. This geological relationship was established early in the exploration of the initial discoveries and served as the basis for successful predictions of later discoveries. The chromite zone probably persists throughout the length of the sill, but its width and chromite content are not everywhere the same. The initial exploration along both limbs of the sill has shown a combined total length of about 12,000 feet of chromite ore varying in width from 6 to 12 feet. In many places the overburden is thick and obscures the continuity of the chromite zone; but as investigation proceeds the known deposits will be extended and new ones will be found. Thus, although a total length of 12,000 feet of ore has been investigated up to the present time, there is an indicated length of approximately 31,000 feet along which the ore is more than 4 to 5 feet wide. This estimate is based on geological considerations and represents a total tonnage in the order of 15,000 tons per vertical foot of depth.
