Titanium and zirconium heavy minerals occur in the tailings streams from processing plants which use the hot-water extraction process for recovery of bitumen from tar sand. In a research program conducted by Syncrude Canada Limited, the crude tailings stream was upgraded to produce quality zircon and titanium mineral products. To process the tailings through conventional upgrading equipment, bitumen residues must first be removed from the mineral grains. Then, by gravity separation, fines and coarse sand grains were removed and a 71% heavy minerals concentrate was prepared which was further separated by high-tension equipment into zircon and titanium minerals concentrates. The zircon concentrate was upgraded by gravity, magnetic and high-tension cleaning to produce a high-quality 98% zircon product. The titanium minerals concentrate was separated into rutile, leucoxene and ilmenite fractions. Heavy minerals distribution in tar sand drilling core samples has been evaluated for various locations on Syncrude Lease 17, and expected annual production levels of heavy minerals have been estimated. A preliminary evaluation has been made of the potential for zircon, leucoxene and rutile production and for further upgrading of ilmenite and leucoxene to synthetic rutile for titanium dioxide pigment production.

The objective of metrology in mineral exploration is to derive unbiased confidence limits for masses of metals contained in reserves and resources. Sets of test results for gold and silver determined in pairs of interleaved bulk samples give unbiased confidence limits for the central value of each metal. The same sets of test results show how to verify spatial dependence by applying Fisher?s F-test to the variance of a set and the first variance term of the ordered set. A significant degree of spatial dependence gives a higher degree of precision for the central values of gold and silver. Plotting variance terms of an ordered set against the variance of the set and its lower limits of asymmetric 99% and 95% confidence ranges gives a sampling variogram. Sampling variograms put in plain view where spatial dependence in sampling units or sample spaces dissipates into randomness. The application of statistical methods to test results for sets of ordered core samples within boreholes, and for sets of ordered ore volumes within profiles, plays an important role in defining reserves and resources.

"INTRODUCTIONThis article documents the current non-metallic mineral s resources of Manitoba (Fig. I), and makes comparisons with currently producing deposits in North America and elsewhere in the world. Industrial minerals may lack the glamour of gold, silver or the base metals, but they contributed approximately 20070 to the value of Manitoba's raw materials, and even out-performed our petroleum industry, except during the oil boom of the early eighties (Fig. 2). Values per tonne of industrial commodities can be as high or higher than for base metal ores. Commodity prices (Canadian), listed in the February 1988 issue of Industrial Minerals magazine, are: talc $202.00 - $306.00, sillimanite $427.00; kaolin $69.00 - $270.00; garnet $175.00 - $250.00; and mica $405.00 - $540.00. The prices are converted to Canadian dollars using the prevailing exchange rates of February I, 1988. Some commodities are not sold by weight. Building stone, for example, is sold by the cubic foot. An average rough granite block, 4 ft by 4 ft by 8 ft, is worth approximately $2000 sitting on the quarry 1100r in southeastern Manitoba (Fig. 3).Thus, not all rocks that do not contain sulphides are worthless. Some may be extracted more profitably than either the base or precious-metal bearing varieties.Industrial Mineral CommoditiesThe commodities available in Manitoba are described in two categories: (1) those already in production that have additional development or expansion potential, and (2) those not in production logical information available at this time.Current Industrial Mineral ProductionThe commodities described herein are currently in commercial production in Manitoba (Fig. 4). The development of set of laboratory experiments, intended to help undergraduate students meet Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board requirements for Engineering Design outcomes, is described.The laboratory, which is part of a third year level course in hydrometallurgy, is aimed at advancing the ability of students to generate and use experimental results to design an industrial copper leach/SX/EW plant. Emphasis is placed on the students demonstrating the ability to use of their engineering knowledge in weighing the pros and cons of the various process options that they test in converging to a final flowsheet. INTRODUCTION Over the past number of years the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, CEAB, has dramatically shifted the way that they evaluate undergraduate programs. In the past, the focus was on measuring of the quantity and quality of material the students were intended to learn as well as the methods and resources used to deliver that material. Now, rather than principally evaluating the inputs of programs, the focus is more on measuring the quality of the outputs from the programs, i.e. the quality of graduating students. In this regard, the CEAB has developed a list of twelve attributes that learners must develop in the course of their studies. Engineering programs must, not only demonstrate that their curriculums provide opportunities to develop these attributes, but must measure student proficiency in each of these attributes as they progress toward graduation. One particular graduate attribute that Laurentian University’s Bharti School of Engineering has encouraged its faculty members to develop content for is “design”. Engineering Canada (2018) defines this attribute as “an ability to design solutions for complex, open-ended engineering problems and to design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate attention to health and safety risks, applicable standards, and economic, environmental, cultural and societal considerations”. The previous laboratory component for the hydrometallurgy course was a collection of unconnected experiments covering leaching, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and electrowinning. Like in other undergraduate courses, students would perform stand-alone experiments, make the specified measurements, do the specified analyses of the results, and report the findings, all as strictly detailed in the lab manual. The vision for the new lab was to create an experience that would more closely mimic an industrial research program whereby students would start with a given feed material and would progress through a series of connected experiments. Emphasis is placed on the student demonstrating competency in, not only, generating and analyzing experimental data, but also in using the data along with their engineering knowledge to design and evaluate the pros and cons various plant configuration options. Principally, students are asked to weigh cost, safety, and environmental concerns in converging to their final flowsheet. In designed the leach circuit, students must weigh the costs/benefits of varying leach temperature. Higher leach temperatures will yield faster and more complete copper dissolution, which will allow for the specification of relatively smaller leaching circuits, saving capital costs. However, hotter acid solutions are more dangerous to handle and require increasing amounts of energy to heat the slurry, increasing operating costs. In solid/liquid separation, students must weigh the pros and cons of the addition of a flocculent to assist settling. The flocculant will allow for the design of a thickener circuit that employs units with a relatively smaller area, but will result in a thickener underflow with a lower pulp density, which may necessitate a larger number of thickeners. In addition, the environmental concerns of producing a tailings product that contains an organic contaminant should be addressed. In solvent extraction, students must specify the number of stages of loading and stripping, as well as organic and aqueous flowrates to produce suitable raffinate and rich electrolyte streams. Finally, in electrowinning, students will compare the costs/benefits and risks of the use of precious metal coated titanium dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs) versus conventional Pb based anodes.

"This new tool can be used as a quick guide f or the assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type ""go or no go"" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes.Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine extension project, an oil sands mine project and a polymetallic open pit project.Once a favourable recommendation has been obtained then a detailed ""cash flow after taxes"" analysis can be carried out for the project.IntroductionMany tools are used in financial decision-making such as the payback period, the discounted cash flow, the internal rate of return and the wealth growth rate (Berry , 1971).These tools are useful and meaningful in evaluating normal projects closely related to regular business where the number of assumptions made is usually very small and where the cost of capita! is usually selected as a discount rate or a hurdle value. In situations where a significant number of assumptions have to be made,two problems can emerge, namely:I. the risk involved is underestimated leading to a potential financial disaster; or2. a good opportunity is lost because the approach used in evaluating the project is too conservative.Each assumption has its own degree of uncertainty and it is well known that combining uncertainties together can lead to a total uncertainty of critical proportion. The easiest way to account for risk is to increase the discount rate or the hurdle value, but this approach alone is quite subjective and can easily lead to the problems described above."

"Decelerometer testing of a rigid guide system in a mine shaft pro vides usefuI information to operating and maintenance people. High acceleration/deceleration rates can lead to high maintenance costs to bath conveyances and shaft and can also present an operating risk . Possible disastrous results in the shaft have been avoided by restricting the maximum conveyance speed until the shaft and/ or conveyance problems have been solved.The test instrument is a valuable aid especially during commissioning or updating of a hoisting installation. High acceleration/deceleration rates also lead to reduced hoist rope life. During the past fourteen years, a total of 15,000,000 feet of testing was performed in 74 assorted shaft compartments.Based on this experience, it is possible to establish acceptable conveyance maximum speeds provided that all other conditions in the shaft compartment are normal. The body of the paper will present examples of several tests made under actual operating conditions.IntroductionMore and more mine operators are recognizing the real value in the use of the decelerometer for determining the state of shaft guide alignment in their shaft compartments , not only during the initial mine start-up periods, but also on a regular basis while the mine is in production.Decelerometer testing, is a technique in which an accelerometer , commonly known as a decelerometer, is used for measuring conveyance acceleration/deceleration in a lateral plane. lts purpose is to determine the severity of shock loads produced by misaligned shaft guides. Testing is performed by mounting the instrument on the conveyance and operating the conveyance (empty and loaded) at various speeds up to and including full speed . However, full speed may not be attained due to conditions indicated by the tests. These conditions may present an operating risk to the plant."

This paper deals with the large iron ore concentrating plant owned by the Iron Ore Company of Canada. The plant is part of the Carol Project, which is being developed in the Wabush area of western Labrador. The mining and milling operations were officially opened in July of this year. The handling of fine material has always been considered a serious operational problem. The crushing, grinding and sizing of 50,000 tons of iron ore per day, in a dry state, could present sizeable problems in maintenance and orderliness. The operation, as a whole, embraces many recent developments in the iron ore industry. Mining operations include the latest techniques of jet piercing and blasting. Primary crushing involves a single crusher, which handles the complete production. Grinding of the ore includes the latest concepts of dry autogenous grinding in air-swept mills. The actual concentration of the ore is per-formed, in the wet state, by the use of spiral concentrators, with provision for possible flotation or magnetic separation, if required. The upgraded concentrates are either stored or pelletized, prior to shipment by rail to Seven Islands.

ANON-CATARACTING (N-C) ball mill is so operated that the balls are not thrown in-ward at the top of their paths. The result is to maintain, in the mill, a quiescent pool in which classification will occur at a limiting size corresponding to the pulp density. N-C operation is produced by effecting proper relationship among mill speed, ball diameter, volume of ball load, and pulp density. Such operation is typified by the primary ball-mill operation of the Tennessee Copper Company, Copper-hill, Tenn., and the Cleveland Cliff Iron Company, near Ishpeming, Mich.

The production of low- and medium-Btu gas from coal provides a more economic source of energy for most industrial users than pipeline-quality coal gas (SNG), although the latter has received more publicity. The paper reviews existing and advanced methods of coal gasification, with particular emphasis on the production of low- and medium Btu gas for industrial and utility use. Some of the ways in which coal gasification can be integrated into power cycles and industrial plant energy balances are discussed.

The kinetics of the oxidation of uranium(IV) by oxygen gas in aqueous systems is dependent on acid concentration, oxygen partial pressure, and temperature. In order to better understand the relationship between these variables and the speed of oxidation, a series of experiments have been conducted where each parameter has been varied in turn. Data were collected continuously using UVVis spectroscopy, allowing for a detailed examination of the reaction rate over the course of each experiment. The data fit an overall apparent rate law that is 1.5order in uranium(IV), -2order in H+, first order in oxygen, and unaffected by uranium(VI). This relationship does not appear to hold for solutions with <0.2 mol/L initial acid, where a different kinetic mechanism appears to be dominant.

"Mine-shaft wire-rope discard regulations include, among other criteria, a limited amount of permissible loss-of-breaking-strength (LBS). Currently, this parameter is estimated on the basis of non-destrutive-testing (NDT) with electro-magnetic (EM) type instruments. This paper analyses the accuracy with which these estimates have, so far, been obtained in practice.It concludes that while certain types of testers have produced better results than others, the desired accuracy level has not been attained. Also discussed are the putative reasons for this situation, and appropriate actions that the mining industry might wish to take."

MiningWatch Canada is the only national independent civil society organization with an exclusive focus on mining in Canada and Canadian mining companies operations internationally. In 2005, MiningWatch Canada collaborated with other NGOs to develop the Framework for Responsible Mining: A Guide to Evolving Standards. The project was the result of a perceived need by NGOs and retailers, particularly from the jewellery sector, for a framework that would set out environmental, social, and governance standards for the minerals sector ?providing recommendations for retailers and others seeking to source or invest responsibly, as well as regulate and encourage responsible mining practices?. This paper is a reflection on the Framework that examines key areas of concern and notes where the industry norms and expectations of civil society have evolved. The paper focuses on developments in social issues related to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, new initiatives associated with financial transparency, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The environmental components of the Framework that are revisited are waste management, biodiversity, energy and climate change, environmental assessment, mine closure, mercury and seabed mining.

"On behalf of Bob Bruce and myself I would like to begin by stressing some key points.First, most of us know that the Canadian Mineral Processors was formed in 1969 and is an offshoot of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists. I attended that first meeting in 1969, and I haven't missed a meeting since! Pretty obvious that CMP serves the best booze! At any rate, we know that our meetings are supported by CANMET. Camsell Hall is always at our disposal; Bob Bruce acts as permanent secretary pretty much free of charge; we receive a financial grant from CANMET. This brings me to a second point.Second the Canadian Mineral Processors do not enjoy a free ride in this relationship. CMP provides a genuine service to the mining industry, to government, and to universities. For the industry, CMP serves as a forum for the rapid dissemination of new ideas and new technology developed at remote locations throughout Canada. New developments outside Canada are introduced by invited speakers at our meetings. The effect is to help reduce operating costs and increase efficiency.For government, problem areas and research priorities can be isolated through mutual discussions. Direct communication at our meetings can help CANMET to temper its goals and modify its national priorities.For universities, CMP provides a wealth of operating experience and practical know how. The yearly proceedings are a major current reference source fo1· those of us who teach mineral processing. Admittedly, the proceedings are publ-shed from CMP coffers. However, I note that our fees are up this year, which brings me to a third point.Third, we face some potential problems of a financial and political nature. From a financial view, we may lose our CANMET grant and other financial good will simply because of spending constraints. Our fees are expected to climb each year thereafter.From a political view, we know that the metallurgical society of CIM is anxious to incorporate CMP as a section. The pros and cons of such a merger have been described in a recent mailing. In th2 final analysis, the political and financial problems are interrelated. There are several alternative solutions to both problems, which brings me to a fourth point"

"IntroductionMUCH PROSPECTING, exploration, and development work was done for uranium in Canada in 1952, chiefly in northern Saskatchewan and in the Great Bear Lake region of the northwest Territories. The outstanding feature of the year was the great amount of work done in preparing for production at the Ace mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, in the Goldfields region . of Saskatchewan. Many private companies and prospectors were also active in this region. Most of the other parts of Canada where uranium has been found received less attention than during the last few years, partly because so much interest was taken in the Goldfields region.In presenting this short summary of the year's activities now, the writer is handicapped because the season is not yet over; some discoveries have probably not yet been announced, and there has not yet been time to digest the numerous reports that have been sent in by companies and prospectors. In any case it would be impossible to give details for most of the discoveries and properties, because that would require a long report, and because that information is classed as confidential until released by the discoverers and companies concerned. It is only possible, therefore, to give a few generalizations, a brief out-line of the activities in northern Saskatchewan, even briefer ,accounts of the work in other parts of the country, and a few details that property owners have informed the writer he may publish or that have already been published by the owners."

"Abstract -The application of geophysical technology to resource delineation aims to improve the quality of resource/reserve estimates by integrating high-resolution survey methods, geophysical modeling and inversion with three-dimensional representations of geological and mineral deposit data. The use of geophysics can cost-effectively improve a geological interpretation based only on geological and sampling data. Success depends upon the ability to use geological visualization and modeling software, first to develop a three-dimensional geological model and then to modify it interactively by integrating geophysical data with the geological and sampling data.The high resolution required for mineral delineation geophysics results in a focus on borehole seismic and high-frequency electromagnetic methods. Borehole wireline logging is used to develop an understanding of the relationship between physical properties and geological description. Data from core samples and borehole wireline logs allow the construction of a three-dimensional physical property distribution, consistent with the existing geological interpretation. The three-dimensional physical property distribution is used for both geophysical forward modeling (to compare to field data) and as a starting model in iterative inversions.Advanced visualization techniques allow the simultaneous viewing of the three-dimensional physical property model, the geological information and data from which it is derived, and the geological interpretation and the geophysical results. Geophysical results may be simulated responses from a forward model or the output from a numerical inversion in the form of an updated physical property distribution. Iterative refinement of the geological interpretation is required to ensure consistency with the geological and geophysical data. The key to success with this approach is that all relevant geological, geophysical, and rock property data reside in a common, visual model of the earth.Examples from massive sulfide deposits illustrate the benefits obtained by the integration of geophysical and geological data."

SYNOPSIS Canadian Refractories, Limited, produce a wide range of basic refractories. The chief raw material use in their manufacture is the magnesite which is mined, and beneficiated in a heavy media separation plant, at Kilmar, Que. This paper describes the underground operation and the plant and explains how the gravity separation of light, siliceous gangue from the ore has changed the mining practice, increased the ore reserves, and improved the chemical uniformity of the crushed ore. HISTORY REFRACTORIES are essential in the production of steel and base metals and in other high-temperature processes. Basic refractories, chiefly composed of magnesia which is obtained by burning magnesite, are used to line and repair basic furnaces. When World War I cut? off the importation of Austrian magnesite, upon which North American industry had depended, domestic sources bad to be found. In Quebec, work was begun on deposits of magnesite at Kilmar, half way between Ottawa and Montreal and about ten miles north of the Ottawa river. By the end of the war substantial tonnages were being quarried and calcined, but, when Austrian magnesite again became available, the industry declined rapidly. In 1925, the National Research Council, in co-operation with the Federal Department of Mines, began an investigation of the industry&apos;s technical problems. The result of this research work, which was taken over fully by the Company in 1943 and is actively continued, is that the single product of the early 1920&apos;s has been supplemented by more than forty specialized products serving the metallurgical and chemical industries across Canada and in more than thirty other countries.

"Projections of demand for Alberta coal indicate a quadrupling of current production rates to some 70 million tonnes/year by the end of the century. About half of this output-comprised of subbituminous coal-will be required within the province, primarily for generation of electric energy. The remainder-roughly 70 per cent high-volatile bituminous (hvb) steam coal and 30 per cent medium- or low-volatile bituminous (mvb/lvb) metallurgical coal-will be exported, principally to Pacific Rim and Western European countries. Direct employment in mining and coal processing is projected to increase from the present ca. 3000 to at least 12,000 persons.This paper presents separate forecasts for subbituminous, hvb and mvb/lvb coal production in the period 1982-2000; notes a number of possible developments that could substantially modify these forecasts; and briefly discusses attendant infrastructure requirements. Attention is drawn to potential shortages of qualified manpower and to threatening inadequacies of transportation facilities.IntroductionDespite the dislocations triggered by the 1973 &apos;oil crisis&apos;, energy budgets of Western industrial countries are mostly still in the very early stages of the anticipated transition to greater reliance on coal. Shift s to coal are still more often only talked about than being implemented; and the public policies which are essential for timely development of facilities for producing, transporting and using coal are in many instances not yet even broadly formulated, let alone enunciated.In these circumstances, long-range projections of coal demand and supply-even if restricted to internal requirements- are subject to greater uncertainties than usually afflict such forecasts.On the demand side of the equation, these uncertainties arise ultimately from linkages between a need for coal and the availability and pricing of OPEC oil. The current surplus of oil on world markets, which has recently forced substantial reductions of posted prices, is undoubtedly a transient phenomenon that is unlikely to have any long-term impact."

Global mine hoisting regulations require safety fall arrest systems to be installed on vertical conveyance systems capable of safely decelerating and supporting a fully loaded conveyance in the event of a rope severance. Most current arresting systems are incapable of producing controlled safe deceleration rates. Although safety ?dogs? achieve marginally acceptable results on wooden guides, difficulties arise in achieving safe deceleration performance requirement where safety arrest systems operate on steel shaft guides. Previously, arresting systems capable of operating with steel guides have been incapable of producing controlled deceleration rates during the arresting of free-falling conveyances. Most are ?instanton? systems, whereby an occupant inside a conveyance being arrested would be subjected to unacceptably high deceleration forces. This paper briefly highlights the background to the selection process of Rio Tinto?s Technical Staff of a suitable Mine Conveyance Safety Fall Arrest System for #1 Shaft at Rio Tinto Oyu Tolgoi Mine, Mongolia. It also describes the Drop Test and Free Fall Test procedure and the results leading to the acceptance of the Horne Group Levelok® Emergency Braking Technology for the Oyu Tolgoi #1 Shaft in Mongolia. The paper highlights Rio Tinto?s primary objective for the selection of this advanced technology on their primary production shaft cage system as an emergency safety catch braking system combined as an advance hydraulic chairing system. It describes the design and operational parameters and the &apos;Fail to Safe&apos; interfacing with current automated mine hoist systems.

This paper will deal with on-site maintenance welding using the stick electrode, electric arc process. It is primarily concerned with the underlying principles, the application of which, or the lack of such application, governs the success or failure of the operation. It will discuss first the base metal or item to be welded, including the field identification of its weld-ability and the determination of the procedures to be followed. Second, it will outline heat effects and the interrelation between heat applied as part of a welding operation and heat deliberately applied as part of a heat treating cycle, stressing the fact that in welding the same basic principles are effective. The third consideration will be weld metal and its control of both composition and properties. Last, but not least, distortion, shrinkage and residual stress will be considered and practical means for minimizing their adverse effects outlined.
