"A pressure oxidation plant to pretreat refractory sulphide ore at the Goldstrike plant in Nevada, was commissioned in early February 1990. The plant, with a nominal capacity of 1363 t/d, was commissioned over a one-week period and achieved design capacity and availability within ten weeks an unusually short period for a plant of this complexity.The pressure oxidation process is conducted under elevated temperature and pressure conditions, and in a corrosive environment. These conditions demand that the process and engineering design of the plant be carried out in a much more sophisticated and detailed manner than is normally required in a conventional gold plant.This paper provides an account of the process and engineering design of the Goldstrike pressure oxidation plant with special emphasis on the design of the vessels, slurry pumps, piping, valves, and control systems.BackgroundLocationThe Goldstrike property is located in Eureka County in northcentral Nevada on the Carlin geological trend. The mine is approximately 40 km northwest of the town of Carlin which is situated on Interstate Highway 80. The minesite is located 1700 m above sea level in the Tuscarora Mountains.Initial Goldstrike OperationsShallow, low-grade mineralization was discovered by diamond drilling in the Goldstrike area in the 1960s. A heap leach operation was established in the mid-I970s by the previous owners. The Post deposit was discovered in 1982. Gold production by mining and heap leaching reached I t/a (40 000 oz/a). American Barrick purchased the property in 1987 and started an aggressive program of deep drilling. This led to the discovery of the Betze and Deep Post deposits and established sufficient reserves to justify an initial 4100 t/d mill and a 5 500 000 t/a heap leach operation"

ABSTRACT Testing the effects of bubble size (Db) in a Mo cleaning ?otation column at Highland Valley Copper mine indicated that increasing the proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles signi?cantly improved column metallurgical response, compared to typical operation. The results were a three- to four-fold Mo recovery increase and a 1 to 2% Mo (absolute) concentrate grade increase. The improvedcolumn operation produced a 4% Mo plant recovery increase. This study also showed that modelling the ?otation rate constant (k) as an inverse square function of Db was more accurate than considering k to be inversely proportional to Db.

The Tetreault mine, operated by the British Metal Corporation (Canada), Limited, holds a unique position in Canadian mining, being the only steady producer of zinc in Canada east of the Rocky mountains. Its importance in Canadian zinc production may be gauged with some accuracy, since, in 1927, it was responsible for over 13 per cent of the zinc output of the Dominion. In addition, it also made valuable contributions to the production of lead, silver, and gold. Location: Situated in the foothills of the Laurentian mountains, 600 feet above sea level, 20 miles from the St. Lawrence river, and 52 miles due west from the city of Quebec, the property is in the township of Montauban, county Portneuf, Province of Quebec, as shown in Figure I. The municipality of Montauban, immediately adjoining the mine, has a permanent population of 700 people and is six miles by road from Notre Dame station on the main line of the C.N. Rys. between Montreal and Chicoutimi-Notre Dame being n6 miles by rail from Montreal. Connection by 19 miles of dirt-and-gravel road with the Provincial highways&apos; system of Quebec Province, the city of Quebec, which is distant 78 miles, can be reached by automobile in less than three hours, while the distance to Montreal by road is 16o miles .

Summarized Foreword This paper is one of a series arranged by Institute Divisional Committees for the Fiftieth Anniversary Meeting, reviewing the experience of the major mining and metallurgical industries during the life of the Institute. The viewpoint is national and broadly technical. Geology is stressed on a continental scale without regard for provincial boundaries. The boundary between Canada and the United States is, however, so decisive a factor in our coal-mining economics and our political evolution that mention of its implications cannot be avoided. The Laurentian Shield in Canada makes the occurrence of coal deposits a geological impossibility between the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Great Plains. All but five per cent of Canadian coal resources occur west of Winnipeg. The utilization of this ninety-five per cent of our coal wealth has to date been a consequence of transcontinental railways&apos; development, and the small fuel needs of thinly populated wheat farming and cattle-raising territory, in what- to judge from the development of mixed farming and greater population density of Manitoba- is merely an initial stage of agricultural intensification and accordant population growth. There is no useful purpose in measuring coal resource against consumption rate in the West as a whole, because the resource is but partially known, and it is difficult to believe that industrialism based upon coal utilization is in any but its infant stage of growth. Canada west of Winnipeg possesses, moreover resources of petroleum and natural gas, which, together with the power-potential in the long watershed of the eastern slope of the Rocky mountains, give to population centres such as Calgary and Edmonton a choice of energy resources that is almost an embarrass des riches.

"Flow of traffic in the underground mine has been improved through the years with clever use of traffic lights. The evolution is characterized by three major design changes. This paper will scan the basic criteria of these designs.IntroductionMines Gaspe, formerly known as Gaspe Copper Mines Limited, is a member of the Noranda Group of companies. The mine is the ""raison d&apos;etre"" of the town of Murdochville, located 600 m above sea level on the Gaspe Peninsula. Paved highways link the town with Gaspe, 95 km to the east, and with Anse Pleureuse, 400 km to the north, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence.The low-grade copper mineralization was discovered in 1921 at Copper Mountain by local prospectors, the Miller brothers. Noranda Mines Limited obtained an interest in the property in 1937. World War II interrupted exploration work and it was not until 195I that a decision was made to bring the property into production.Initially, operations were confined to the Needle Mountain underground deposits which commenced production in 1955. Between 1968 and 1982, low-grade ore from the Mountain open pit supplemented the production. Due to the depressed market, surface and underground operations were suspended in 1982. Needle Mountain underground mining resumed in the second half of 1984, but the Copper Mountain open-pit operation remained idle. Since 1979, more than 75 km of exploration drilling resulted in the discovery of two new deposits, one which is located under the town of Murdochville . Mines Gaspe&apos;s present ore reserve, approximating 8 million tonnes, will be depleted by the end of 1992."

The paper describes and discusses the use of stainless steels for leaching plants emphasising the duplex family, i.e., austenitic-ferritic stainless steels. This group has generally twice the proof strength of the more common 300-series austenitic grades, which implies possibilities to reduce the gauge at construction of pressure vessels and atmospheric tanks and vessels and thereby possibilities to reduce the weight. The duplex grades have also higher surface hardness resulting in better resistance to mechanical wear, i.e., abrasion and erosion corrosion. The lower contents of nickel and molybdenum imply lower cost and a more stable price considering the present market situation for these alloying elements. AN INCENTIVE or bonus system of payment is commonly used for mine labour. The incentive rates are usually based on the variable units of production, such as dollars per foot of drift advance or cents per ton of ore broken. Portions of the work that must be done to achieve the units of ?production are independent of the production unit and tend to be fixed work for the shift or for the job, irrespective of the production achieved. This fixed work has considerable influence on the equity of incentive rates. The effect of fixed work is to accelerate the loosening or tightening of rates if the production task is over-achieved or under-achieved, and of increasing the loosening of rates loosely set and the tightening of rates tightly set. This gearing of mine contract rates is the reason why changes in conditions, materials, equipment, or methods will change the incentive earnings to a greater degree than would normally be expected. Obviously, therefore, care should be taken in the setting of the task for incentive rates as the gearing makes an inequitable rate even more inequitable.

Boiler tubes of coal-fired boilers suffer severe erosion-corrosion (E-C). One method to counteract this problem is by the use of therma, spray protective coatings. Cold spray coating process was used to deposit Ni-20Cr powder on SA 516 (Grade 70) boiler steel. The bare as wel, as the coated steels were subjected to cyclic experimenta, studies, in the superheater zone of a coa, fired boiler. The weight change technique was used to establish kinetics of the erosion-corrosion. XRD, FE-SEM/EDS and X-ray mapping techniques were used to analyse the as-sprayed and corroded specimens.

"The economics of developing gold deposits containing elevated levels of cyanide soluble base metals is often challenged by high cyanide consumption and increased operating costs. SART is a chemical process that enables cyanide consumed by base metals to be recovered and recycled for gold leaching. The process also provides concurrent recovery of the base metal to generate incremental revenue from the sale of high-grade base metal sulphide concentrates. Although SART was developed and successfully piloted by Lakefield Research and Teck Corporation in the late 90’s and is now a public domain technology, the adoption of SART has been relatively slow due to concerns about implementation costs and the reliability of metallurgical performance. Through extensive experience in selective metal sulphide precipitation applied to mining wastewater since 2007, BQE Water has provided process know-how, design along with operations and maintenance experience to a number of projects involving the integration of SART into various metallurgical flowsheets on an industrial scale. This paper presents the commissioning experience and operating data from a SART plant treating up to 500 m3/hr of leach solution at a heap leach operation in Mexico. INTRODUCTION One of the current trends in the gold industry globally is the increasing importance of complex polymetallic gold deposits as discoveries of large Carlin type gold deposits become increasingly rare (Sceresini, 2005). The presence of cyanide soluble copper and zinc in complex gold deposits necessitates changes to the traditional gold extraction metallurgical flowsheet. A tool available to the industry to help manage the interference of cyanide-soluble base metals in gold extraction is the SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process. SART breaks the weak acid dissociable (WAD) base metal-cyanide complexes, precipitates the metals as high-grade sulphide concentrates and makes the freed cyanide available for recycle."

For a long period of time, the Chinese Government has been attaching great importance to and supporting the rapid development of the coal industry. Particularly since more than 30 years ago, when China introduced the Reform and Opening-up policy, the reform and development of the Chinese coal industry has witnessed world-recognized achievements. National coal production increased from 618 million tonnes in 1978 to 3.52 billion tonnes in 2011. While China?s coal production accounts for 49.5% of the world?s total, its annual production growth contributes to over 80% of global production growth. China is a country utilizing coal as its main source of energy. As the Chinese Government gives support to the rapid development of new and renewable energy sources, as well as to increased coal utilization efficiency, the ratio of coal in the primary energy consumption mix will gradually decline. However, for a long period of time to come, the total volume of coal demand will keep rising modestly. The Chinese Government has been highly committed to and actively promoting the overall, coordinated and sustainable development model, which puts people first. It has put forward a strategic task to build an ecological civilization, and highlighted its resolve to uphold the basic national policy of resource conservation and environmental protection, with a view to the pursuit of sustainable development. China will incorporate its response to climate change into the national economic and social development program, and take effective measures to lower CO2 emissions 40?45% per unit of GDP in 2020 compared to 2005. At the same time, China will increase the ratio of non-fossil fuels to 15% in the primary energy consumption mix. All of the above factors have raised requirements for the Chinese coal industry, with implications for clear directions, plans and goals for the development of the coal industry.

Electrochemical behavior of an X-80 pipeline steel, including frequency-sweep electrochemical-impedance spectroscopy (EIS), time-sweep EIS at a constant frequency and open-circuit potential (OCP) monitor, was investigated using four-point bending specimens subjected to a stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) test in a near-neutral pH environment, The capacitive loop became smaller with test duration, revealing an increase in the corrosion rate, The resistance obtained in the constant-frequency EIS test showed two regions, of which the region with a remarkable decrease in resistance transformed into a region of slow decrease, whereas the capacitance increased with test time indicating that iron dissolution was fast at first, and then a corrosion product or film formed and covered the surface, leading to the pitting formation.

An industry survey has been conducted by the Queen&apos;s University Mining Engineering Department of 30 Canadian mining organizations to determine how effectively newly graduated mining engineers meet the needs of the industry. The principal objectives of the survey were to evaluate, and thus provide focus on change for, curricula being taught at Canadian mining engineering schools in service of the industry&apos;s needs; to provide feedback on current industry expectations; and to reinforce contacts with the industry as a means of providing future collaboration. A strong focus of the survey was placed upon industry&apos;s perception of the special attributes of engineering hires and applicability of student academic training to meet their industrial requirements. In providing this detailed summary of corporate responses, a clearer understanding of the mining industry&apos;s expectations of engineering training at Canadian colleges and universities has been gained.

"An intuitive way to reduce power consumption in grinding operations is to feed the grinding circuit with finer feed by enhancing blasting and fragmentation control. The optimization of blasting with the objective of minimizing power consumption in grinding is not new.The study was based on a Canadian mine that processes a very hard ore. BBA conducted blasting/fragmentation and grinding circuit surveys in 2014. The results of the exercise were used to develop a base case model to simulate the effect of blasting in the operation on the grinding circuit. Tools for fragmentation simulations, particle size measurement and crushing/grinding simulations were used with the objective of reducing the OPEX costs including power consumption.The paper describes the steps involved in the model optimization as well as an economical evaluation of the OPEX savings.INTRODUCTIONIn 2014 BBA was retained by one of its clients to conduct a crushing and grinding survey. The objective of the survey was to update the grinding circuit model with production data and also to develop a tool to investigate opportunities for process improvement.A second phase of the study involved the development of drilling and blasting and crushing models. The models were used to diagnose the operations and to investigate opportunities for process improvement.The objective of the present study is to describe the approach and to identify potential improvements to overall mine site operating costs by better integrating mining and milling operating costs with blasting and grinding models."

"Agglomeration has become common pre-treatment step to improve heap leach percolation thereby recovery, the fundamental understanding of the agglomeration process for crushed ores is still lacking. Agglomeration is required for ores which either contain excessive amounts of clay or an excessive quantity of fines generated during mining and crushing. Numerous experiments have been carried out in laboratory scale batch drums using different ores. It has been found out that experimental agglomerate size distributions exhibit self-preserving spectra. The self-preserving/ similarity distribution of the agglomerates is found to be independent of operating conditions and is uniquely determined by the size enlargement mechanism. An empirical model based on the absolute difference between moisture applied and optimum moisture was developed. This model uses self-preserving spectra in the form of a Rosin-Rammler distribution function to predict size distribution at different operating conditions. The empirical model was considerably easier to work with plant scale agglomeration drums. Also, a test known as dip test is developed which improves fundamental understanding of the agglomerate formation and growth mechanisms. This test also provides the progeny size distribution of each agglomerate size. The progeny size distribution was analyzed with a model that partitions the particles into a host and guest category. The ensuing partition coefficient identifies the behaviour of a particle as a host for other particles or a guest layering on other particles. This concept helps in identifying the type of agglomerate that would result for a specific feed size distribution. INTRODUCTIONHeap leaching is one of the hydrometallurgical processes that have served as a green and economically viable process for the treatment of low grade complex ores of copper, uranium, nickel, silver and gold (Dhawan et al., 2013). Heap leaching appears to be a favorable candidate for the least energy consuming process for low grade ores. In heap leach operations nowadays a pretreatment step known as crushed ore agglomeration has been implemented (Dhawan et al., 2013). A bed of agglomerates improves the uniform percolation of solution through the heaps of ore. Therefore, it was possible to treat wastes and mill tailings via agglomeration and heap leaching. Agglomeration pretreatment is required for ores which either contain excessive amounts of clay or an excessive quantity of fines generated during mining and crushing (Bouffard, 2005; Dhawan et al., 2013).While agglomeration has become common practice pretreatment step in heap leach operations, the fundamental understanding of the crushed ore agglomeration process is still lacking. The author reviewed publications up to 2012 on the crushed ore agglomeration process and did not come up with modeling studies on the topic (Dhawan et al., 2013). Some of the possible reasons can be the stochastic nature of the process, experimental difficulties, and lack of instrumentation for fundamental studies."

As NI 43-101 is law in Canada, the SEC allows mineral resources and mineral reserves prepared under CIM Definition Standards for issuers that are reporting in Canada but are also registered with the SEC. The SEC places conditions on the disclosure of these estimates. US shareholders are cautioned that the requirements under NI 43-101 and the CIM Definition Standards differ significantly from those of Industry Guide 7.Note: this Guide contains the Commission's basic mining disclosure policy. "From1927 to1989, the Hornemineproduced53.7 Mt of ore grading 6.1 g/t Au and 2.2% Cu from two large volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits composed primarily of pyrrhotite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The ore bodies were hosted by a package of chlorite-sericitealtered epiclastic rhyolite tuffs which were deposited in a narrow palaeo-graben located on the flank of a major felsic volcanic centre. M ineralizingfluids percolated upward through the permeable footwall rocks and were further focussed along syn-volcanic, graben-bounding faults. Sulphides were deposited by a process of sub-seafloor replacement of the rhyolite tuffs.Gold-copper-(zinc) mineralization, including ore zones mined between 1985 and 1989 as the REMNOR ore zones, is present throughout the 900 m of felsic volcanic stratigraphy at the Horne. All the deposits were formed by syn-volcanic hydrothermal processes active during felsic volcanism. "Exposure to airborne respirable silica in surface and underground mine operations is known to be the cause of industrial lung diseases. For this reason, silica is a regulated substance and worker exposure must be monitored regularly. Diesel exhaust also contains substances which are potential caricinogens. In an underground setting, diesel particulate may be the main component of what is referred to as respirable combustible dust (ReD). Although diesel particulate or soot is not at present a rigorously regulated substance, new epidemiological data is prompting North American institutes and agencies to regulate diesel soot or RCD exposure. This paper describes a method where by silicaand RCD exposure may be determined using a single personal sample. In this method, an airborne respirable dust sample is obtained and analyzed nondestructively for silica components using an on-filter X-ray diffraction method. Filters are then ashed at 500°C in a muffle furnace over a four-hour period to determine mass loss due to RCD burning. "In 2005, after nearly a decade of process development and feasibility work, the commercialization of the Falconbridge Nickel Smelting Technology (NST) began in earnest with the design and construction of a grassroots ferronickel plant at Koniambo Nickel in New Caledonia. The NST process was developed as an alternative to the conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF) process for production of ferronickel from saprolitic nickel laterite ores. The NST process promised environmental and energy efficiency advantages over the conventional route. A key step of the NST process involves fluidized bed pre-reduction of calcined laterite ore using direct injection of pulverized coal as the reductant. Two parallel fluidized bed reduction roasters (FBRs) were installed at Koniambo Nickel, each designed for a maximum capacity of 4,200 MTPD of calcined nickel laterite ore. This paper describes the process development and scale-up of the fluidized bed pre-reduction process, the design challenges associated with the prototype commercial units, and the current status of the FBR operation at Konaimbo.INTRODUCTION In the mid-1990s, Falconbridge began to develop a new flowsheet for production of ferronickel from nickel laterite ores. The process that developed came to be known as the Falconbridge Nickel Smelting Technology (NST). The flowsheet, which is particularly appropriate for saprolitic ores, involves several major unit operations, including: drying in a hammer mill-flash dryer, calcination and preheating in a flash calciner, pre-reduction in a fluidized bed reactor, and smelting in a DC arc furnace to produce the ferronickel product. This paper focuses on the fluidized bed pre-reduction step of the process and provides an overview of the process chemistry, laboratory and pilot plant development work, scale-up and commercialization of the pre-reduction step, and the results obtained in the prototype commercial units."

There are many honor stories about aluminum in the marine environment and many are not based on facts, so they are myths. Myths must be addressed before progress can be made. This paper attempts to dispel the myths and state the facts. A common perception is that aluminum ships cost significantly more than steel ships. This paper illustrates that even though the cost of the aluminum structure is over 50% more than the steel structure, an "equivalent" aluminum naval ship can be built within 7% of the acquisition price of a steel ship. This is possible because of the cascading benefits of the aluminum ship&apos;s significantly lighter weight. Aluminum ships also have a life-cycle cost advantage over steel ships because of reduced maintenance and fuel cost savings.

The MRT process can produce a high purity separation product of maximum added value at low cost. This paper discusses applications for MRT in the gold industry, including recovery of gold and silver as well as metal contaminants from various process and recycle streams.
