Off late, the criteria of selecting the refractory have acquired a trend line aiming to a cleaner environment and the utmost importance is given to the eco-friendly approach. The stainless steel making furnaces normally use mag-chrome refractories for the obvious reasons of changing slag basicity from acidic to basic. Such refractories generate toxic fumes and compounds with hexavalent chrome, which is unhygienic if inhaled. The present paper describes the development of a chrome free alumina magnesia carbon refractory, it's different test properties, simulative testing and microstructures. The optimum quantity and distribution of carbon in the brick restricts the carbon pick-up by the steel. Bricks with the same composition were manufactured in the commercial scale and used in a stainless steel making furnaces in USA. The performance of same refractory in this furnace was quite encouraging and at present the same quality brick has become a normal practice in this furnace. Since no chromite is used in making this brick, so no toxic compounds are generated environment remains pollution free.

"The United States contains a variety of domestic rare earth element mineral sources containing such as ancylite, bastnasite, monazite, and xenotime. Research has been performed to investigate the fundamental surface chemistry involved in the froth flotation of these minerals, and apply the knowledge gained to substantiate the results through experimental testwork on a domestically sourced rare earth ore. This paper will outline the fundamentals and literature of rare earth mineral flotation, review its industrial applications and provide some recent research updates.THE RARE EARTH ELEMENTSRare earth elements (REE’s) are a unique family of elements with nearly identical physical and chemical properties. They account for approximately 1/6th of all naturally occurring elements, but the entire group occupies only one position on the periodic table. These 15 elements make up the lanthanide series (atomic numbers 57–71), and all but one (promethium) occur naturally. In addition to these 15 elements, yttrium and scandium are also considered rare earths since they tend to occur in the same deposits as the rare earths and share similar physical and chemical properties as seen in Figure 1. In particular Figure 2 denotes, a cartoon of the subtle differences in each caused by the 4f atomic sub shell (Gschneidner Jr., 1964). These subtle differences result in very difficult challenges in the selective concentration and final separation of each rare earth. (Anderson, 2015, Kronholm, Anderson, Taylor, 2013)Rare earths are separated into two different subsections; the “lights” or LREE’s (lanthanum57 through europium63) and the “heavies” or HREE’s (gadolinium64 through lutetium71). Yttrium is generally considered a heavy rare earth since its ionic radius is close to that of the HREE’s, while scandium is not considered either a light or a heavy."

Compañía Minera Antamina is a polymetallic mining complex that produces copper and zinc concentrates as primary products and molybdenum and lead/bismuth/silver concentrates as by-products. In 2007, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) was contracted to increase SAG mill throughput by integrating and optimising blast fragmentation, crushing and grinding for the harder M4/M4A (CuZn) ores. Following the implementation of recommendations provided by Metso PTI, the SAG mill throughput increased from 2750tph to reach an average of 3600tph for the remainder of 2007. Due to continued application of mine to mill integration and optimisation philosophy, by 2010, the concentrator consistently exceeded the target of 4400tph while processing harder CuZn ores.

The Alcan Bayer Process Experimental Centre (BEC) is an essential development tool for the Bauxite & Alumina researchers at the Alcan Arvida Research and Development Centre in Jonquiere, Quebec. Between the laboratory tests and the industrial prototypes or the industrial applications, the BEC is a key element for technology transfers. The Bayer process is the extraction of aluminium oxide (or alumina) from the bauxite ore. The Bayer Experimental Centre's history and flowsheet are presented. The major pieces of equipment are described. Safety and design considerations are presented. Finally, examples of applications, double digestion and pressure decantation, are briefly described.

"VAUGHAN THOMPSON designed the Thompson retrievable diamond drill wedge and reaming assembly in 1948. Since 1950, the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Company, Limited has used the method extensively. The wedge, setting tool, and reamer have been modified slightly since they were first introduced. In 1951, Mr. Thompson designed the Thompson arc cutter. The purpose of this tool is to decrease effectively the diameter of the arc cut, using standard drilling tools. This directional drilling device is usually employed when a branch hole is desired. The Thompson arc cutter has been used with success at Birch Lake, Saskatchewan, at the property of Cuprus Mines, Limited, Manitoba, and at Thompson Lake, Manitoba.UsesThe Thompson retrievable wedge provides a simple method for:(1) Re-drilling lost core sections(2) Re-sampling sections of old holes(3) By-passing lost tools Correcting the direction of a hole(4) Drilling a branch hole to obtain intersections at a higher elevation than the original holePrevious to the spring of 1951, the wedge was used only for the first four of these purposes. The property of MacLeod-Cockshutt Gold Mines, Limited, is in the Little Long Lac area of the Thunder Bay Mining Division, Ontario, about four miles south of the Canadian National railway station of Geraldton. The town of Geraldton is about 170 miles east of Port Arthur and 22 miles west of Long Lac, which is on the main line of the Canadian National railway. The Trans-Canada highway passes through the property and during the winter season the road is maintained between Port Arthur and Long Lac. Electric power is supplied by the Hydro-Electric Commission of Ontario from their Cameron Falls plant and is distributed at 44,000 volts by a local transformer station. Early History The South orebody was discovered by diamond drilling in the spring of 1936. This is a porphyry contact orebody with major pyrite and minor arsenopyrite mineralization. Some gold is present in the 'free' state, but for the most part it is locked in the pyrite, with little or none in the arsenopyrite. Preliminary test work was based on comparing straight cyanidation with bulk flotation and cyanidation of the concentrates. The overall results by the two methods were found similar, but for economic reasons the flotation-cyanidation process was adopted. Before the mill came into operation, a new and entirely different type of orebody, consisting of massive sulphide lenses in banded iron formation, was discovered to the north of the existing workings. These bodies are an intricate mixture of pyrite and arsenopyrite, both carying gold.

Due to its unique properties, chrysotile asbestos is used in many diversified applications. In recent years, a better understanding of the structure and properties of chrysotile has evolved due to the research efforts of many investigators. A summary of the results of some of these investigations is given. An attempt is made to show the relationships between the properties of chrysotile and its crystal structure. Examples taken from the literature are cited in which methods have been developed for modifying the properties to improve the performance of asbestos in some applications. These include the effect of pH on the positive zeta potential and the addition of sodium silicate to improve filtration characteristics. The dehydroxylation and formation of forsterite when chrysotile is heated are also discussed.

The results of laboratory tests on iron precipitation from non-decopperized nickel anolyte are discussed. The parameters (pH, oxygen consumption and stirring speed) for iron precipitation from the anolyte, using the oxygen in the air, were determined. In the experiments conducted under optimized conditions, the residual concentration of iron in the anolyte after precipitation was 0.7-2.7 mg/L, and the copper and nickel losses to the solid phase were 0.05-0.07% and 0.05-0.16%, respectively. The filtration ability of the iron slurry obtained was 2 to 5 times higher as compared to that after chlorine oxidation and oxyhydrolysis. The leaching of the non-ferrous metals from the iron cake made using the separate nickel anolyte purification process was possible by dissolution in sulphuric acid. It was established that after cobalt precipitation from the copper- and iron-depleted anolyte, the precipitates obtained had lower ratios of Fe:Co and Ni:Co.

"Time-dependent swelling deformation of several shaley rock formations in Ontario is a wellknown phenomenon. In shales and mudstones with a higher salt concentration in the pore fluid than the ambient fluid, the outward gradient generates an osmotic pressure which acts as the driving force for swelling. The swelling phenomenon appears to be related to ion exchange between the rock porewater and the surrounding water.The swelling potential is expressed as the percent swelling strain that occurs per log cycle of time, in either the vertical (perpendicular to bedding) or horizontal (parallel to bedding) directions. In addition, the swelling potential is also noted to be stress dependent. In practice, therefore, the conditions required for swelling are (i) the accessibility to water, and (ii) an outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid. The relief of in-situ rock stress during excavation serves an initiating mechanism (Lo and Micic, 2010).INTRODUCTIONTime-dependent swelling deformation of several shaley rock formations in Ontario is a well-known phenomenon. Al-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as medium-strength structural materials; extrusion is the most common processing route. In the present hot deformation investigation of a 6060 alloy, the microstructure of the alloy has been analyzed in the as-cast state, after homogenization heat treatment and after hot deformation by tensile tests in the range 400-490°C and 10-4 to 10-2s-1 on both as cast and homogenized alloys. After deformation the microstructure of the as-cast alloy exhibited cavitation. The flow curves at the lowest test temperature T show a gradual softening after a stress peak, being more evident for the alloy deformed in the homogenized state in association with a high yield stress; at higher T a plateau is attained which is lower as T rises and strain rates decrease. For each fixed T, the ductility decreases as strain rate increases for the homogenized alloy whereas, for the as cast alloy, it rises with strain rate. Constitutive analysis gives Q = 240kJ1mol for the homogenized alloy in agreement with published values; this indicates a more rapid strength decline with rising T than Al, suitable for good hot workability along with the lack of cavitation.

Canada's only current tungsten producer started up in 1962 with a small open-pit mine on the Flat River , 180 air miles north of Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. The orebody was in a contact-metamorphic skarn zone and contained about 1.5 million tons of ore grading an estimated 2.47% W03 and 0.5% copper. Near the end of the open pit , a new zone was discovered on the lower limb of the same structure, and the decision to go underground was made in 1972. The new "E Zone" contains over 4 million tons of ore grading an estimated 1.6% W03 and 0.28% Cu , and has been supplying the concentrator at about 175,0 00 tons/ year since late 1974. A continuing program of change and up-grading is necessary in the conversion from a seasonal open-pit mine with limited life to an underground operation with twenty years of reserves. Changes are necessary in plant and services as well as the mine. Also, environmental protection requirements have changed from rudimentary to rigorous over the life of the operation. This paper sums up the changes in the operation since 1971 and outlines the changes yet to come.

"SART technology is a useful tool for improving the economics of gold recovery from certain types of complex gold ores. SART liberates cyanide consumed by base metals such as copper, zinc and nickel, and enables the newly freed cyanide to be recycled to precious metals leaching while producing high-grade base metal sulphide concentrates for sale. The benefits of SART include the reduction in cyanide consumption, avoidance of cyanide destruction costs, minimization of risks of environmental non-compliance due to residues of cyanide destruction reporting to mine effluents, and generation of extra revenue from the sale of base metal concentrates. Concerns with SART typically include uncertainties around capital and operating costs and proper integration of SART into the overall metallurgical flowsheet. This paper presents two case studies addressing these concerns. The first involves actual costs of the full scale SART integrated into a gold heap leach operation and treating up to 500 m3/hr of leach solution at a mine in Mexico. The second involves field pilot testing and a preliminary cost estimate for integrating SART into a silver mine in Peru using Merrill Crowe.INTRODUCTION One of the current trends in the gold industry globally is the increasing importance of complex polymetallic gold deposits as discoveries of large Carlin type gold deposits become increasingly rare (Sceresini, 2005). The presence of cyanide soluble copper and zinc in complex gold deposits necessitates changes in traditional gold extraction metallurgical flowsheets. One of the tools available to the industry to help deal with interferences of cyanide-soluble base metals in gold extraction is the SART (sulphidization-acidification-recycling-thickening) process. SART breaks the weak acid dissociable (WAD) base metal-cyanide complexes, precipitates the metals as high-grade sulphide concentrates and makes the freed cyanide available for recycle. Although SART is a commercially available technology, it is still relatively new to the industry. Fewer than ten (10) full scale plants have been constructed in the past couple of decades. Some of these SART plants are small, most are located at remote sites, and the majority have not operated on a continuous basis. This has resulted in a general lack of information in the industry about the true costs, operability and metallurgical performance of SART. BQE Water has been involved in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of large scale SART plants in Mexico, Turkey and Chile and has conducted field testing programs as part of the technical assessment of SART integration into various metallurgical circuits. Having built and operated numerous plants utilizing selective sulphide precipitation of heavy metals, BQE Water has gained unique insight into the design and control of the sulphidization stage of SART to minimize costs and ensure high efficiency in cyanide recovery."

Recycling of dust using a rotary hearth furnace (RHF) has gained considerable attention in the past two decades for the sustainable production of steel with less environmental impact. In order to further promote the recycling of electric arc furnace dust and carbonaceous wastes using the RHF process, a mathematical model was developed to predict the reaction behaviour of dust-reductant composites. The reduction kinetics of zinc and iron oxides as well as the volatilization behaviour of volatile matter in the reluctant were considered. The modeling approach and some preliminary results are presented in this article.

"Colloidal silica in Key Lake’s Solvent Extraction (SX) feed solutions has presented an operational problem for the mill throughout its history. The colloidal silica stabilizes aqueous continuous emulsions, resulting in elevated solvent losses and operational downtime. Through the years, many attempts have been made to solve this problem, but no viable solutions were found. By revisiting an idea dating back to the 1979 feasibility study and re-evaluating it under current operating conditions, a practical solution was achieved. This paper discusses Key Lake’s history around colloidal silica removal, starting with coagulation using a polyethylene oxide polymer (PEO), and ending with coagulation using a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer. The results of a mill trial using POLYSIL® RM1250 introduced at doses up to 300 ppm into the counter current decantation (CCD) circuit to clarify SX feed solutions are discussed with a focus on the benefits to SX.INTRODUCTION Colloidal silica has historically been a significant operational problem in the Key Lake mill. Silica originates from clays in the ore as well as concrete backfill intermixed with the ore resulting from the mining method used at Key Lake’s ore source, the McArthur River mine. The silica is dissolved as silicic acid into solution in the mill’s sulphuric acid leaching circuit. Once in solution, silicic acid polymerizes (Hearn, Smethurst, & Boskovic, 2016) forming a fine suspension of stable colloidal particles. These silica colloids are unaffected by flocculants and sand filtration reporting to the pregnant leach solution (PLS) as a fine turbidity in solution. Silica concentrations typically ranged from 700 to 1200 mg/L Si in the PLS fed to SX. Throughout Key Lake’s history, silica interactions in the Solvent Extraction (SX) process have made SX a mill bottleneck and a source of significant reagent costs."

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic to neutral solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated EH-pH diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur-water system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

IN A DISCUSSION of use of any material of ?construction in the mining industry, two points of view must &apos;be kept in mind - that of the producer or manufacturer of mining and metallurgical equipment, and that of the maintenance and operating staff of the mining plant. In the first case, the choice of material of construction is up to the manufacturer and the user of the equipment has little direct say in the matter. However, if materials are badly chosen and the equipment does not function properly, wears out rapidly, or costs too much, repeat orders ?will likely go to a different manufacturer, so that, in the end, the consumer or mine operator does have the final voice. In the case of materials for maintenance work and plant operations, however, .the mill personnel have direct control over purchases and it is then that a well-balanced knowledge of materials, their properties, and their costs, can be directly useful. With all materials of construction, the final criterion is unit cost versus service performance, so that the lowest possible total operational cost will be obtained. Sometimes this means using the cheapest material available, sometimes the most expensive, but in any case careful analysis of service performance, replacement cost, and material cost is essential to determining the material that produces lowest total cost.

"THE HOLLINGER MINE has been producing gold and by-product silver almost continuously for forty-eight years. The value of current production is $10,000,000 annually from one million tons of ore. Its management •has, particularly over the past decade, increasingly . concerned itself with the problem of profitable operation in a time of steadily rising costs and a fixed price of gold. At one period in the life of the mine, before World War II, production resulted in yearly profit margins that were stable and relatively thick. In winning gold from a series of inconsistent vertical ore lenses, operating management was much better protected than it is today against a general rise in cost or dip in grade of ore. The tissue-like thinness of present-day margins demand more careful handling. A sharp rise in costs, if protracted, could easily rip the tissue to shreds and close down the business. The counter-measure of raising grade and gutting the mine would bring on the end perhaps more rapidly, without having contributed much to the recovery of our national re-sources, nor to community welfare. The alternative is to keep costs under control."

Subsequently, Mattabi located its first housing in the Township of Ignace, which is situated 50 miles from the site of the mine and plant. The two parties concerned therefore draw up a contract which would detail the conditions under which concentrate sales will take place. The contract will identify treatment and marketing charges (including escalations), deductions for metal losses in the smelter, pricing formula, timing of payments, penalties for deleterious elements, etc.An understanding of the smelter contract is important to the mineral processor, for it will determine how he operates the plant to maximize economic return.Description of Contract ClausesUsing copper concentrate as an example, the smelter contract generally contains the following three basic charges:I. Metal Deductions- as the smelting process does not recover all the metal contained;2. A Smelting Charge- expressed per ton of material to cover costs on the bulk material such as receiving, unloading, thawing in winter, sampling, roasting to drive off sulphur, smelting through the matte and blister stages to recover mostof the copper and precious metals;3. A Refining Charge- expressed per pound of copper.The following is a review in some detail of a number of clauses which could be considered typical of a treatment and marketing type of copper concentrate sales contract. Most normal considerations in an agreement could be covered by the following types of clauses.Terminology- covers definitions, units of measurement to be used (e.g. short tons, troy ounces, etc.), currency (Canadian dollars). The term ""unit"" may be defined - l OJo of a ton of concentrate, e.g. one unit of copper means 20 pounds of copper per short ton of concentrate."
