"The beneficiation and upgrading of pyrochlore from its ores is carried out through flotation. In industrial practice, upgrading is conducted in a two-stage flotation process in which pyrochlore flotation is carried out after gangue mineral pre-flotation (carbonate, silicate, sulphide or phosphate reverse flotation). In this study, the flotation of pyrochlore from a low grade carbonatite ore was performed at the laboratory scale following a two-stage flotation process in which carbonate minerals were floated in advance of niobium minerals. In parallel, a simplified flotation process was developed in which pyrochlore was floated directly from gangue minerals at increasingly acidic pH. Laboratory results indicated that both two-stage and direct flotation provided similar results in terms of niobium grade-recovery. Based on these results, a large scale, integrated pilot plant was conducted using a direct flotation flowsheet. While the elimination of reverse gangue flotation resulted in flowsheet simplification, the dissolution of carbonate minerals and the subsequent effect of dissolved cations on the floatability of pyrochlore added an element of complexity. A comparison of results from locked-cycle laboratory testing and pilot plant testing highlights the challenges of scaling up a complex flowsheet. A case is made for the direct flotation process and the key parameters to achieving success in large scale direct flotation of pyrochlore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) is a niobium bearing mineral which has been the primary global source of niobium since the first pyrochlore mine commenced operations in the late 1960s (Gibson et al., 2015a). Reconnaissance radiometric and geochemical data have been obtained for an area on the western shore of Wollaston Lake that includes the Rabbit Lake uranium deposit. The study area is extensively drift cover ed. The geochemical data were obtained by analysis of center-lake sediments and surface waters for a variety of elements and other constituents. The airborne radiometric data comprise measurements of eU, eTh and K obtained with a .50,000-cc NaI (Tl) detector at a mean terrain clearance of 120 m and 5-km flight-line spacing. Uranium in lake sediments and uranium in waters are the most effective geochemical indicators of uranium mineralization; the other elements measured are not notably anomalous. A sample site density of one per 1 8 km 2 is more than adequate for identification of the mineralized area. Because many water samples contain close to or below the current analytical detection limit of 0.05 ppb U, the use of sediments is generally favoured. for broad-scale reconnaissance in the region. Uranium in these lake sediments appears to be little influenced by variations in the organic or iron and manganese content. The most effective radiometric indicator of the mineralization is the eU/eTh ratio. This parameter is less influenced by environmental variation on the ground beneath the flight line than eU alone . The eTh/K ratio is anomalous under the Athabasca Formation unconformity where, in places, the uranium mineralization is localized.

"Industry practice for high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) assessment and sizing relies on tests using pilot-scale machines with 0.7–1.0 m roll diameters. Typically 1–10 t of sample are required, depending on the level of study and resource complexity. This is challenging during early-stage development, which hinders incorporating HPGR into designs. With support from the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization, researchers at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at The University of British Columbia developed bench-scale piston–die press tests (PPTs) that correlate to pilot- and full-scale HPGRs. This paper describes a new regression model to estimate the HPGR-specific throughput rate using both PPT results and an HPGR database. The effect of alloying elements on the mechanical properties and thermal expansion of 336 casting alloy usually used as piston alloy which has low thermal expansion and very good high-temperature mechanical properties and good wear resistance was investigated. The mechanical properties and thermal expansion characteristic of samples with different combination of alloying elements, which enhance to reduce the cost of products, have been studies, The results show remarkable increase in the mechanical properties with increasing the amount of Cu and Mg, while are reduced with increasing amount of Ni, On the other hand, the use of eutectic aluminum alloy as 336 alloy with higher percent of Cu and Mg and lower percent of Ni are recommended for industry, due to economical viewpoint and satisfactory properties.

During recent studies concerning the effects that various surface treatments, surface imperfections, locked-in residual stresses and metallurgical and geometrical notches have upon the mechanical behaviour of metals and, in particular, upon their tension-bending characteristics under impact loads, it became apparent that specially developed methods and samples would be of great assistance in determining the desired data. This paper describes and discusses a number of different types of double-notched tension-bending impact samples which have been considered and examined for this purpose. The types most suitable for exploratory investigations are proposed for application in the study of the _behaviour of metals, their welds, and, in particular, their surfaces, when subjected to various notch-severities, surface imperfections, strain rates, temperatures, and constrained states of stress (i.e. the relations of the three principal stresses). It is expected that the proposed double-notched tension-bending samples and the proposed test methods will also contribute toward further understanding of the cold brittle behaviour and the notch-sensitivities of metals. "The Abitibi volcanic belt was sampled along a cross section extending from Matagami to a point east of Rouyn. A few samples were also collected in Louvicourt township, Quebec. The major elements were determined for 344 samples, and rock names were defined using normative minerals. The analytical data were studied by means of variation diagrams. The Abitibi volcanic belt is characterized by rocks belonging to both the tholeiitic and calc-alkaline magmatic series, but they show some differences as compared to some typical reference series, particularly those from Japan. Basalt is the predominant rock type and accounts for 44 per cent of the sampled outcrops. The volcanic rocks are relatively poor in K2O and TiO2. Regionally, the volcanogenic copper-zinc mineralization is associated with the calc-alkaline volcanic sequences. Locally, within such sequences, some types of abnormal deviations from the averages are recognized only in association with the copper-zinc mineralization. The anomalies are ascribed to hydrothermal alteration consisting of the introduction of MgO and removal of N a20; enrichment in K20 is also observed where zinc mineralization predominates. Examples of such anomalous zones show that, in places, this alteration phenomenon can be quite extensive. "PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor underground mine use blasting to develop its tunnels which will cause poisonous and dangerous gases trapped inside mine. To analyze this case, a study of mine ventilation, the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) gas concentration and diffusion coefficient is commenced. At the end, the re-entry time formula will be determined. Results indicate that this study is site specific and could only be applied in the place this study executed. The aim of this study is to be further developed by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to find a universal re-entry formula. Thus, its development and production processes require blasting to develop its tunnel. This process caused poisonous and dangerous gases spread and trapped inside the mine, one of them is carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO is formed in an unbalanced reaction of explosives detonation and could be the cause of headache, blackout and death to people who inhale CO at certain concentration (McPherson, 2011; Hartman, Mutmansky, Ramani, & Wang, 2012). Mine ventilation system is installed in the mine to resolve this problem. Mine ventilation play an important role to disperse CO gas by absorb the poisonous/dangerous gases and deliver clean air into mine. The important parameter is diffusion coefficient, because diffusion is affecting particulates or gasses spreading from its sources throughout the mine. Diffusion coefficient is the total diffusion in axial direction of turbulent flow mainly by convection of bulk motion, advection and eddy diffusion, while the effect of molecular diffusion is appreciably negligible (Widiatmojo et al, 2015). Taylor (1953, 1954) develops a theory about the dispersion by inducing a slow stream of solvent into a capillary tube. Taylor used Reynolds assumption of radial diffusivity to be analogous with the transfer of the matter in turbulent flow as well as the transfer of momentum and heat. "A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

"The object of the work described in this paper was to increase the understanding of the relation that capillary pressure of a rock, hydro-dynamics, and accumulation of oil in stratigraphie traps have to one an-other. The hydrodynamic oil-water tilt equation is derived by considering the two vector gradients involved: (1) buoyancy of oil in water and (2) hydraulic gradient.Recent theories show the necessity for oil to have a continuons phase in the reservoir rock in order to mi-grate; this fact applies to hydro-static as well as to hydrodynamic conditions. Hydrostatically, the displacement pressure of the rock deter-mines the amount of oil that can be trapped behind a permeability barrier. If the buoyancy of oil in water exceeds the displacement pressure, oil will migrate up-dip; an oil trap will be formed where displacement pressure is greater.In stratigraphie traps the pressure drop caused by moving water is positive when its direction is down-dip, helping accumulation; and it is negative when its direction is up-dip, forcing the oil into the tighter section of the reservoir. Theoretically, pro-vided we have data such as: (1) the displacement pressure of an up-dip permeability pinchout, (2) density difference between the oil and water in place, and (3) the direction and magnitude of the hydrodynamic gradient (if any), the possible extent of a stratigraphie oil accumulation down-dip can be predicted.To test the above theory sample cores from three wells in the Denver Basin were analyzed and the oil column that could be held under hydro-static conditions was calculated. After the hydrodynamic influence was considered, the results were compared with actual field data.The significant fact shown by this investigation is that the calculated oil column in one reservoir very closely approximates the actual extent of the oil column in a well. Also in accordance with the theory, the capillary pressure caused by the buoyancy of the oil column exceeded the measured displacement pressure on core samples from another productive field. For very tight shaly sand and questionable oil shows, the interpretation of data is very critical, as shown by experiments on core samples from a third field."

Using constructed wetlands to chemically reduce hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) to Cr(III) from industrial and mining wastewater has proven to be feasible and efficient. Applying first-order kinetics to describe the process is simple, but in some cases a more accurate model is required to reflect the process. This paper studies the feasibility of using non–first-order kinetics to describe the reduction process. Results indicate that half- and second-order kinetics adequately described Cr(VI) reduction in laboratory wetland mesocosms. The organic carbon content played a relevant role, whether it was built up by plant growth or spiked into the feed water.

World mineral production is dominated by six countries - the U.S., the U.S.S.R , Canada, South Africa, Australia and China - which also hold most of the reserves of the world?s minerals. For the developed and centrally planned countries, there is a strong positive correlation between the mineral production of a country and its land area: there is no correlation between mineral production and land area for the less developed countries. These facts imply that, after taking due account of geological controlling factors, a country may expect to produce minerals in approximate proportion to its land are a provided that political, economic, and historical factors are conducive to mineral exploration and mining. Contrary to popular political belief in many parts of the world, the developed countries are the major source of mineral imports for the industrialized countries. Moreover, exports of ores and minerals account for a relatively small par t of world trade, and are an important factor in the export picture of only a few of the less-developed countries. The looming resource confrontation between the developed and the less-developed countries is based largely on the false premise that the industrialized countries of the world are minerals-poor and owe their wealth to cheap minerals from the less-developed countries. The data presented refute this. Geological controls are relatively minor in the present distribution of world mineral production; political and economic factors are dominant. It is argued that an expansion of world trade in minerals - based on increased exploration and new forms of finance for mining ventures - rather than cartels, price-fixing and trade restrictions is by far the preferable solution to the problem of redressing the legitimate grievances of the poor countries of the world.

On the basis of research of relations among the market participants the analytical model has been created which connects the price of industrial good at stock exchange with volume of sales and the stock of the sellers and buyers, Also a model was developed for assessment of these parameters of the market status by the actually fixed stock exchange and general market indicators. The composition of these models made it possible to create reliable system of short-term price forecasting for commodities or base metals up to one quarter ahead. Imperfectability of creation a model for reliable price forecasting by purely statistic methods (by the "black box" principle) was shown. A model of price behavior qualitative forecasting till one quarter ahead has been developed, which determines the probability of reaching in future of the given level as well as of the price maximums and minimums, Optimal values of threshold probability were determined for forecasting the future price maximums and minimums securing the maximum profit from the forecasting system application for commercial activity. The developed system of forecasting was identified for primary aluminium at the period of 1990-2003. The system was tested daily during 20 months period for speculations on 3M primary aluminium forwards at London Metal Exchange with high commercial result.

"On the basis that 99% of the energy input into a mill is converted into heat, it is possible to estimate the amount of energy captured in the slurry, the amount that is lost to the environment as well as the possible means to reduce such losses. As a result it becomes possible to estimate the potential amount of energy that can be captured by technologies such as thermoelectric generators or even Sterling engines. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the energy recovery potential dry grinding circuit could be as high as twice that of wet grinding circuits.In this paper, the energy recovery potential of dry grinding will be explored by examining the case of the Newmont Carlin mine dry grinding circuit. The paper will open with a review of the energy recovery potential of a few wet grinding applications followed by a description of the dry grinding circuit and a definition of the control volume around that circuit. A thermodynamic model will be used to estimate the circuit discharge temperature and an estimate of any losses as well as provide an estimate of the potential impact of different means to reduce energy losses. The paper will close with a discussion of the assumptions used in model development."

Introduction This paper presents in detailed form the results of settling tests that were published in a few preliminary notes in the April 1949 issue of the Bulletin (p. 166). Carborel is the trade name for sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and aluminium carboxymethyl-cellulose produced by the reaction of monochloroacetic acid on the alkali cellulose to form an ether. The water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose has been known in Europe for several years as sodium cellulose glycolate and has been marketed under several trade names. These cellulose ethers, however, are relatively new in North America, where the name carboxymethyl-cellulose is often abbreviated to C.M.C., or they are referred to as cellulose gum. The particular grade of Carboxel used in the settling tests in the mill of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is the high-viscosity sodium carboxymethyl- cellulose known as Carboxel H.V. It is a white, fluffy powder and is hygroscopic, although not deliquescent. Carboxel solutions in water are colourless, odourless, and resistant to beat and light. They are stable to alkalies, but are precipitated by acids when the pH is reduced below 4.0, and also by solutions of soluble lead, iron, copper, aluminium, and chromium salts. Solutions of Carboxel exhibit the properties of hydrophilic colloids.

Tunnels in deep mines are subjected to high stresses. Fracture and failure of the rock mass around an opening can occur when mining-induced stresses are high. In burst-prone grounds, mining-induced seismicity can cause additional dynamic loading which can further increase the stress around the tunnels. When the dynamic stress reaches the rock mass strength, fracturing can occur and rockburst may happen (depending on loading stiffness around the failed rock mass). Rock support installed in the tunnel must be capable of dissipating dynamic energy and holding the failed rocks. Hence, it is important to estimate the depth of failure for rock support design. This paper focuses on how to model depth of failure under dynamic loading. In the modeling, two scenarios of rock failure are considered. In the first scenario, rock failure occurs under static loading and subsequent dynamic loading further increases the depth of failure. In the second scenario, no failure occurs under static loading but in the subsequent dynamic loading, failure around the tunnel is created.

An investigation of the pressure pulse spectrum generated by the gas dispersion processes in a Peirce Smith copper converter was undertaken via the simultaneous measurement of four tuyeres using high frequency pressure transducers. The data was captured, stored, and analyzed using digital data processing techniques; including power spectral density plots, band-pass filtering, and a principal component analysis (PCA). The process was characterized throughout by a dominant 3 Hz pulse signature attributed to the formation of lateral gas envelopes. In particular, test tuyeres in the tuyere line tended to operate synchronously at the dominant frequency, regardless of operating conditions tested and despite being distributed along the converter. Synchronous behavior is thought to arise from the acoustic coupling and possible resonance behavior of the gas delivery system on the converter.

Electrochemical techniques, mainly linear sweep voltammetry and potential step chronoamperometry, were used to study the behaviour of dissolved phosphorus species in cryolite-alumina melts, The presence of AIPO4 or Na3PO4 gave rise to voltammetric current waves due to electrode reactions involving phosphorus species at potentials where dissolved alumina is stable in cryolite melts, Diffusion kinetics for dissolved P(V) species were studied, Data from industrial cells were used to determine mass balances for phosphorus, For cells being fed with secondary alumina, more phosphorus tends to end up in the produced metal, Laboratory experiments to study the effect of phosphorus in the bath on the current efficiency for aluminium were also carried out.

"Abstract- The Jasper Gold mine in northern Saskatchewan produced a total mill feed of 140 127 tonnes at an average grade of 19.0 g/t Au. Both diamond drilling and chip samples from under­ ground workings returned extremely high values, up to 12 851 g/t (375 oz/I) Au over 0.10 meter from a chip sample. In the presence of such extremely high grades, the accurate estimation of reserves is a major problem.ln the first part of this study, production data from the mine were used to evaluate the results of a variety of reserve estimation techniques in this environment. In two out of three cases studied, indicator kriging with assays cut to 342.9 g/t (10 oz/I) gave extremely good results. In the third case, however , indicator kriging gave unacceptable results. Instead, lognormal kriging of uncut data gave the best results.Secondly, from the same database, a number of drill-hole spacings were simulated, and reserves estimated from the simulations. As may be expected, the results of this analysis show increasingly better results with tighter drill-hole spacing. However, even with a 5 m by 5 m spacing the variation from actual grade was quite large. This is not a systematic under- or over-estimation of grade, rather a random scatter of results .The results of this study show very clearly the problems of deriving good estimates of reserves when extremely high-grade samples are encountered. There is a high degree of randomness to this database, so reserve estimation in this situation will remain a high-risk operation."

The chemical industries are using different type of catalysts, which after application usually produced many tons heap of residues. One of them is cupric oxide catalyst with high content of copper and silica. The recovery of copper from the waste has become major interest from a viewpoint of environmental protection and recycling of resources. The thermodynamic analysis and experimental results suggest that the copper from cupric oxide catalyst can be extracted by plasma reduction process. By plasma reduction process the inert slag and copper with following chemical composition: 99.04 % Cu, 0,042 % Fe could be obtained.

Alberta Plains coals exhibit an almost rectilinear system of vertical fracturing called "cleat", which is best traced by mapping true bearings of underground coal mine rooms. The cleat pattern is approximately conformable with a pattern of surficial features and a pattern of bedrock jointing in the Alberta Plains, and with the trend of the Rocky Mountain Trench, but not with the distribution pattern of coal rank nor with the trend of the eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountains and Foothills physiographic province. The processes resulting in cleat remain in doubt, but cleat is always of practical importance in extracting coal from deeply buried deposits.
