Reference to the original use of the terms Laurentian and Huronian (and its extension), shows that the former was applied to granitized sedimentary and metamorphic pre-Cambrian rocks, and the gneissoid igneous rocks associated therewith, and the latter to non-fossiliferous rocks supposed to be later. But it appears from the work of Collins, Quirke and others that there is more or less of an overlap, and that of the original Laurentian the Grenville limestone, and some of the granites, may be later than the lowest part of the original Huronian. Before we can decide whether to abandon one or the other of the two terms, or how to delimit them, it is important to know the extent of this overlap. The Pb :U ratio, though not to be depended upon too minutely, does give a real idea of the age of a mineral as it increases with the decay of uranium, and so is greater the longer the time since the uranium was separated: and there are reasonable prospects of help there from in getting a knowledge of the relative age of different granites to assist in solving the problem, as facts already collected show. 1. "A new sensor cannot be considered in isolation from the process in which it is utilized. This paper, describing an on-stream particle size analyzer, therefore gives considerable emphasis to the slurry handling techniques employed to ensure that the instrument is presented with a representative sample. A new sampler is described, which continuously abstracts a small, representative sample from a closed pipeline containing a flowing slurry. This sample is then diluted, thoroughly mixed and pumped to a head tank, from where a continuous stream is fed at a constant rate to the size analyzer. Data are presented to show that particle size segregation is minimal throughout this sampling and sample preparation. A continuous particle size analyzer based on a separation principle is described, and the basic parameters of size distributions, and how they relate to this particular instrument, are considered. Typical results are given. An electronic system is presented which accepts the basic sensor outputs, and converts these to a particle size signal suitable for process control. Finally, the use of an inplant computer to process the sensor signals to obtain a particle size signal is briefly considered."

Introduction Lithium has been known since 1817, when it was discovered by the Swedish chemist, Arfvedson, while working in the laboratory of Berzelius on the chemical analysis of the mineral petalite, LiAl(Si205)2. Development of the chemistry of lithium proceeded slowly, following the early work of Davy, Gmelin, Bunsen, and Matthiessen. Approximately seventy years elapsed before lithium products assumed any commercial importance, and for a considerable period it was a' very minor industry. Their chief early use seems to have been in medicine, and in the production of lithiated water. Other more important uses were gradually discovered, and the industry has had a slow but steady growth. Chemistry Lithium is classified as an alkali metal, along with sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cæsium. Like these, it is a silvery-white metal, which can be cut with a knife; it is harder than sodium, but softer than lead" It is remarkable in having a density of only 0.53 gram per cubic centimeter, which makes it the lightest metal. On ignition in air, it burns intensely to form chiefly lithium monoxide, Li2O. Like the other alkali metals, lithium reacts vigorously with water to form hydrogen and lithium hydroxide. The later is a strong base, and reacts with acids to form salts. The salts of lithium are in general analogous to those of the -other alkalies, but many of them have unique properties. For example, lithium chloride and bromide are extremely hygroscopic, and have a very high water solubility. Lithium fluoride, phosphate, and carbonate, on the other hand, are all relatively insoluble, unlike the corresponding sodium and potassium compounds. In this instance, lithium exhibits its frequent tendency to resemble the alkaline-earth group of elements (calcium, strontium, and barium). Many of the special and valuable properties of lithium are related to the extremely small size of the lithium ion.

Of the twelve known ore zones on the Sunro property, acquired by Cowichan Copper Co., only the "B" and "C" orebodies of the "River Zone" had been explored sufficiently to indicate the grade and tonnage. The "B" zone was selected for initial production. The portion of this orebody above the main adit level was developed for horizontal-ring, longhole mining. Ore from the stope would be scraped directly to the coarse ore bin. The lack of a suitable mill site on surface, as well as the 8,000-ft. tramming distance, led naturally to the installation ground. I N November, 1960, a lease was obtained by Co-wichan Copper Co. Ltd. (N.P.L.) from Sunro Mines Ltd., covering the main ore (River) zone of the Sunro property. A total of twelve zones had been located on the property. Nine of these lay within the leased area. "Treatment of oxide, e.g. roasted gold ores has received relatively less attention than sulphidic ones and recently, handling of oxide gold ores is becoming essential. In this study, the influence of roasted gold ore (RGO) slurry (at 35% solid ratio) on the electrochemical dissolution of gold has been examined using pure gold and iron oxide minerals (hematite, maghemite, and magnetite) as disc electrodes by zeroresistance ammeter mode either in one or two separate containers. The presence of slurry decreased galvanic currents, i.e. corrosion rates due to the release and increase in the amount of soluble and/or insoluble species that could retard further the anodic behaviour of gold. Higher galvanic currents were observed in two separate containers than that in one container indicating the primary importance of galvanic interactions. SEM-EDS results observed iron hydro/oxide coatings on gold surface in case of magnetite test. However, in case of RGO electrode it is not a perfect passivation, although somewhat decreasing trend was observed on gold dissolution. These findings have revealed that passivation is not only a laboratory phenomenon, but also it could be responsible for the slowdown of gold dissolution in industrial practice.INTRODUCTIONThe cyanidation of gold is an electrochemical corrosion process thus; the dissolution of gold can readily be studied by electrochemical techniques. The outcome/summary of previous electrochemical studies of gold leaching can partially be summarized as follows: Filmer (1982) and Lorenzen and van Deventer (1992) reported the negative effect of pyrite and pyrrhotite on gold leaching due to the galvanic interactions; Aghamirian and Yen (2005) studied gold galvanic corrosion in presence of sulphide mineral electrodes only in one cell using zero-resistance ammeter (ZRA) mode; Dai and Jeffrey (2006) discussed, individually, the anodic and cathodic behaviours between gold and sulphide minerals, and Azizi et al. (2010, 2011) used a bed reactor to examine the influence of sulphide minerals on gold dissolution in one and two separate cells. Accordingly, a slowdown in gold leaching has generally been attributed to the passivation phenomenon, although the indication of this phenomenon is still an undergoing debate. For instance, Mrkusic and Paynter (1970) identified the passivation as the film formation of dissolved species from calcine, Crundwell (2014) explained passivation, in the case of corrosion of metals, as the formation of a layer which is composed of a new chemical species on the mineral surface and this layer inhibits or blocks further reactions. He suggested that passivation is related to the oxidation of the metal, and the formation of a passive layer that retards the rate of dissolution by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, galvanic interactions, passivation phenomena, or combinations of them are considered significant electrochemical factors affecting gold dissolution (van Deventer, Reuter, Lorenzen, & Hoff, 1990; Azizi, Petre, & Larachi, 2012). It is important to note that generalizing the influence of a mineral/metal on gold dissolution may not be correct in all cases, since contrary behaviours/results (for pyrite) have been observed (Aghamirian & Yen, 2005). Therefore, electrochemical study of gold is still a subject of research and need to be examined further in detail."

Forty aluminium A356 castings were poured on a Low Pressure Permanent Mould industrial machine, 500x700mm in platen size. The 152mm wide casting comprised three steps, 25mm, 13mm, 6mm in thickness and a 2.5mm overflow which allowed to assess the thin wall capability of the process. The casting campaign, which produced 40 parts, allowed to test the influence of various production parameters including the time of application of the pressure in the crucible, artificial cooling of the mould and casting rate. The thermal history in the mould was recorded over the 40 cycles, which allowed to construct a reliable thermal model of the mould/casting assembly. The metallurgical quality of castings representative of the various conditions was assessed in the 25mm, 13mm and 6mm plates. This included measuring the level of microporosity, the dendrite fineness (DAS), along with the tensile properties in the T6 condition. The radiographic quality per ASTM E155 was also determined. Modelling filling and solidification allowed to verify the validity of the predictions based on available relationships relating microporosity, secondary dendrite arm spacing (DAS) and local tensile properties (Quality Index, Q) to the local thermal solidification parameters.

"The effect of metal cations on the rutile flotation using styryl phosphoric acid (SPA) as the collector was investigated by micro-flotation test, bench scale flotation test, zeta-potential measurements and adsorption measurements. The micro-flotation results indicated that Fe (?) and Al (?) ions in low concentrations had obvious activation on the rutile flotation, and Pb (?) ions in low concentrations had smaller activation of rutile, but Fe (?), Al (?), Pb (?), Ca (?) and Mg (?) have strong inhibition of rutile flotation in high concentrations. The bench scale flotation results indicated ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), boracic acid, and sodium hexametaphospate can decrease the metal ions concentrations, and increase the recovery of rutile flotation. Adsorption measurements and zeta-potential measurements revealed that Fe (?), Al (?) and Pb (?) ions were adsorbed on the rutile surface, and had interaction with SPA. But when these ions concentration were over the largest adsorption capacity, residual metal ions could occur chemical reaction with SPA.INTRODUCTIONRutile is one of the favored minerals for production of titanium dioxide white pigment, primarily through the chloride manufacturing process (Stanaway 1994; Hou et al., 2013) However, the majority of rutile ores belong to refractory ores, while flotation is one of the most efficient methods to separate fine rutile from gangue (Dolbear et al., 1937). With the flotation development, many effective collectors were successfully applied in the oxide ore. Many reviews have indicated that organic phosphonic acid collectors showed good selectivity on oxide ores such as ilmenite and rutile (Bulatovic & Wyslouzil 1999; Liu & Peng 1999).It is inevitable that many types of metal cations are present in ore pulp. These metal cations significantly influence the flotation of minerals. Liu et al. (2015) showed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ could improve the floatability of spodumene at pH 12.5 and 10.0, respectively. The authors proposed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions readily form hydroxy complexes (CaOH(l) and MgOH(l)) and precipitates as (Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2) in strongly alkaline solutions. Fan and Rowson (2000) investigated the effect of Pb(NO3)2 addition as an activator on ilmenite flotation and showed that it could improve ilmenite floatability. The addition of Pb(NO3)2 resulted in an increase of ilmenite zeta potential in both weakly alkaline and acidic aqueous solutions. Mehdilo, Irannajad, and Rezai (2015) studied three kinds of ilmenite of different origins and discovered that both Mg and V had a negative correlation with ilmenite flotation, while the Mn content seemed to correlate positively with flotation efficiency. A number of studies have also showed that Fe3+ can improve the floatability of ilmenite (Fan et al., 2009; Nuri, Mehdilo, & Irannajad, 2014)."

Abstract This paper lists the interests of the Physical Metallurgy and Chemical Research laboratories of the Metallgesellschaft, which were visited by the authors, members of a group of Canadian investigators sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction in 1945. The Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratory The following information was obtained from Professor E. Schmid, Chief of the laboratories. It is understood that Dr. Schmid is a former Nazi and was to be removed from his post in November (1945). Aluminium Research The laboratories investigated the corrosion resistance of the high-strength aluminium-magnesium-zinc alloys. The same test procedure as used by V.L.W. was followed and Dr. Schmid co-operated closely with Dr. Brenner on this project. Intercrystalline corrosion was combatted by additions of chromium, titanium, or vanadium, and the work in this field parallels that of Dr. Brenner of V.L.W. * Dr. Schmid reports that Bollenrath and Siebert believe that corrosion difficulties with these alloys can be overcome to some extent by heat treatment. He himself was of opinion that the correct answer lay not only in correct alloying but also in correct heat treatment. The heat treatment involved either interrupted quenching or a change in quenching rate from a solution temperature of 500°C. The procedure is either a slower cooling from solution temperature or an interrupted cooling with a holding period at l50°C. Work had been done on piston alloys, the 11-13% Si, 1% Ni, 1% Cu, and 1% Mg being the favoured material. This is called Lo-Ex and is similar to Mahle 124 or KS1275.

Interaction between mattes having various compositions and solutions with a wide range of free acid and non-ferrous metals concentration have been studied in terms of chemistry, mechanism and kinetics. The solution acidity and oxidizers to reducers ratio in the matte-solution-gas phase system have been demonstrated to be the major factors determining the process behaviour. It was found that the types of copper and nickel secondary sulphides resulted from nonferrous metals precipitation from solution, depend on of the solution and initial matte composition. Based on these studies, technologies of matte leaching and nonferrous metal precipitation in the form of rich sulphide concentrates are developed.

Over a period of three years, a cooperative program in Australia has resulted in the development of radioisotope immersion probes for the on-stream analysis of mineral slurries. Two basic probe types are now available on a commercial basis - fluorescence and absorption probes - and within each type there are a number of variations so that optimum sensitivities can be obtained for elements with atomic number greater than titanium (22), thus covering most metals of interest to modern metallurgy.

In the pursuit of comfort and safety, the wonders of science have given us controlled heating and cooling, thus enabling us to enjoy all the aspects of present-day living to an extreme never previously •envisaged. Man's attempt to conquer the elements largely involves con-trolling the temperature around him. Without having conquered this aspect, his body energy would be consumed in trying to maintain physical comfort, rather than being invested in the explorations which have resulted in man's control over the forces of nature. The indirect methods used to obtain the most agreeable temperature environment were developed because of the natural tendency to strive for increased safety, convenience and comfort. Until the twentieth century, when heat generated by atomic fission became a reality, man's only source of heat, except for that of the sun, came from his discovery of fire.

COMPLETED in November, 1943, at a cost of over $1,500,000, Elk River colliery of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited, has been laid out and equipped for an ultimate annual production of 1,000,000 tons and replaces the recently closed Coal Creek plant, which has been operated by the Company for the past forty-five years. The project has involved the opening of mines in three seams, the construction of a complete set of colliery buildings, including a modern preparation plant of 360 tons per hour capacity, and the laying out of the necessary yard tracks and spur connecting the new development with the Company-owned Morrissey, Fernie and Michel railway, which, in turn, connects with the Canadian Pacific railway at Fernie. The colliery is three and a half miles east of Fernie, B.C., near the southern end of the Crow's Nest coal field, which contains the largest and most important body of coal in the Province of British Columbia. The coal-bearing horizon is the Kootenay formation, present in the form of a syncline covering an area of 230 square miles. Most of the coal seams occur in the lower 2,000 feet of the formation, the covering beds being largely coarse sandstones and conglomerates of great thickness, the presence of which accounts largely for the preservation of the coal measures. James McEvoy, in the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for the year 1900, states that the basin appears to contain a fairly constant coal content of nearly 172 feet in 23 seams of a thickness of one foot or over. Coal has been mined in the Fernie district since 1897 and the first shipments were made from Coal Creek colliery in the following year, over the then newly constructed British Columbia Southern railway. Since that time, a total of over 16,000,000 tons of coal has been produced, an average of 350,000 tons per year. The7ears of peak production were 1910, 1912, and 1913, with an all-time high of 924,000 tons in 1913. The lowest output in the history of Coal Creek was that for the year 1933, when only 60,340 tons were produced, the colliery being closed for some months. Present production from Elk River colliery averages 1,150 tons per day, the output being considerably less than it could be were sufficient man-power available.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an emerging environmental management tool for examining environmental impacts from cradle to grave. In this paper, LCA is used to evaluate the acidification potential (AP) and global warming potential (GWP) of belt conveyors and truck haulage systems in a surface gold mine using the ISO 14040 standards. The results show that, for AP, the truck system has 32 kg of equivalent SO2 per functional unit, compared to 8 kg for the conveyor system. However, for GWP, the conveyor has 2,820 kg of equivalent CO2 per functional unit, compared to 648 kg for the truck option.

Many non-commercial operators are currently faced with the need to operate fleets of legacy gas turbine engines. How long such engines can be kept in service safely, without replacing a significant portion of their aging structural components, has become a growing concern to engine life-cycle managers, due to uncertainties in the remaining lives of critical components of these engines. This paper describes the application of the damage tolerance methodology to predict safe inspection intervals (SII) for critical components of gas turbine engines, using components of a turboprop engine for a transport aircraft as examples. High temperature components of this engine are made of advanced aerospace alloys. The methods of predicting three-dimensional fatigue crack growth at the critical location of turbine discs and spacers using both commercial and in-house developed algorithms are presented. Sensitivity analyses are performed to determine the effect of variations in material parameters on the predicted safe inspection intervals. In addition, spin rig tests performed for both turbine discs and spacers are described. Finally, crack growth rates predicted by numerical analyses are compared to those obtained from spin rig testing and the damage tolerance of the turbine components is assessed.

"Using the calculated (Thermo-Calc software) and experimental methods (SEM, TEM, EMPA, DSC, XRD, etc.) the phase composition, structure and hardening of aluminium alloys of the Al-Ca-Zn-Mg system were studied in the following range: 2. 5%Mg, up to 10% Ca, and up to 14% Zn (wt%). Fragments of this quaternary phase diagram in the aluminium corner were constructed, including the liquidus surface, as well as some vertical sections. It was shown that the relatively large amount of zinc enters in the Ca-containing phase, which formula can be described as (Al,Zn)4Ca. An increase of Zn content leads to formation of Al4Ca primary crystals at lower concentrations of calcium. The eutectic (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca has a fine structure and aluminide particles are capable to spheroidization during the heat treatment at temperature 500 C. The maximal level of hardness observed on calcium containing alloys was higher than 200 HV, what gives the reason to expect good strength properties. With an example of an Al-9% Zn-2,5%Mg-3,5% Ca model experimental alloy based on the (Al)+(Al,Zn)4Ca eutectic, a principal possibility of manufacturing thin rolled sheets was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloyed with calcium was first studied in 1970-80s by such authors as Piatti (1976), Moore (1978, 1980), Il'enko (1985), Swaminathan (1990), and Perez-Prado (1997) as superplastic materials. In particular, the alloy systems Al-Ca-Zn were studied (Il'enko, 1985, Swaminathan, 1990, Perez-Prado, 1997). For some time there was no new published works concerning the aluminum-calcium alloys. During the last years many works were published dedicated to the calcium alloying of magnesium alloys (Kim, 2011; Xu, 2011; Aljarrah, 2008; Bakhsheshi, 2014). This urged the authors (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2016) to start studying cast and wrought aluminum-calcium alloys for construction (2008–2014). There is almost no information in the literature concerning triple and more complex diagrams of the aluminum-based system states with calcium and other elements. In recent work, parts of the state diagrams are plotted for the aluminum angle zone: Al-Ca-Mg-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2016), Al-Ca-Ni-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Bazlova, 2017), Al-Ca-Si-Sc (Belov, Naumova & Akopyan, 2017) and others. Special attention was paid to the study of the system Al-Ca-Zn-Mg (Naumova, 2017). Based on this system creation of advanced extra-high tensile alloys is planned. "The air classification of moist bulk materials is addressed in the literature insufficiently. Therefore a feasibility study investigated the influence of feed moisture on the separation efficiency expecting a reduction with higher moisture content in the feed. Two iron ore samples were characterized in terms of the nature of bonding of moisture as well as its effect on the agglomerate strength. The classification tests themselves were conducted with two dynamic laboratory air classifiers at cut sizes from 45 to 110 µm and a moisture of the feed material between 0 to 10 wt.-%. The quality of classification was assessed by split factor, cut size, separation efficiency, moisture of both products, as well as the yield of the fines as product fraction in a corresponding processing plant. An initial approach was found for a technological implementation: A sufficient drying of a moist feed can be realized simultaneously to the pneumatic transport inside the classifiers. In the present case the drying effect and dispersion intensity was sufficient to provide good separation results up to 3 wt.-% feed moisture. An additional drying step was necessary beyond 3 wt.-%.INTRODUCTIONSpecific information about the influence of moisture in air classifiers is very rare. Mostly only dry products are processed and/or drying prior to classification is recommended. Apart from the specific influence of the feed moisture a lot of literature can be found regarding air classification itself. Altogether air classification can be divided into several sub-process (Leschonski, 1977):- dosage of the feed material,- dispersing the solid feed material into a gas stream,- feeding the dispersed material into the classification zone by pneumatic conveying,- separation of coarse and fine particles, and- separation of fine particles from gas.For wet feed particles also drying plays an important role. Interesting for the present investigation are the humidity of the feed and its influence on the single sub-processes."

A year ago a paper (1) was presented at the Annual Western Meeting of the Institute regarding silicosis in Ontario mines. It described the whole problem as we see it and discussed the means of prevention. The work and aims of the Technical Silicosis Research Committee of the Ontario Mining Association, and of the Committee's field engineer, were fully described also and it is suggested that reference be made to this paper in order to have a better understanding of the observations which are presented now. These observations enlarge upon parts of the dust control measures already discussed and tell of general progress in the past year. They concern fifty properties, the majority of the operating mines, which vary in size from the hopeful prospect to established producers yielding 11,000 tons of ore daily. Most of these are gold mines; a few copper-nickel. The ores range from heavy sulphides to siliceous materials and they are mined by many methods from varying types of deposits. The majority of the latter are steeply dipping and all are found in Precambrian host-rocks. Up to the present, die greatest depth to which mining has penetrated is 6,400 feet.

Resource development conflicts arise largely due to differences in worldview between those who support and those who oppose development. This paper illustrates how societies and civilizations with different worldviews produce different levels of creative and economic energy. A questionnaire was created to build a database of responses to test whether worldview and resource development are correlated. Factor and multivariate regression analysis determined correlations for respondent groupings. Results showed a positive correlation between the respondents\u2019 worldviews and their attitudes toward resource development. Correlations became stronger as the homogeneity of the sample subgroups increased.

"The coal industry is an important part of Canada's economy - as an energy source, employer, and generator of export earnings. Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada's energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada's exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada' s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."
