"The traditional metallurgical scale-up techniques for flotation plants are based on lumped flotation rate constants, dimensionless hydrodynamic numbers and the use of safety factors. Once the plant has been designed, the flotation principles that govern scale-up play almost no role in the optimization of the circuit to meet its metallurgical targets. This deficiency can potentially lead to a plant design incapable of meeting its targets, especially when circuits incorporate large flotation cells. This paper demonstrates the application of the k = PSbRf model in providing a suitable framework for flotation modelling, scale-up and circuit optimization, thus presenting an integrated approach to the problem. Studies were conducted at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog concentrator to characterize cell hydrodynamics, gas dispersion properties, froth flow behaviour, entrainment and ore floatability to obtain the key data necessary to develop a model for the flotation circuit. The findings of these studies are presented in this paper, which provide valuable insights into the modelling and optimization of the Red Dog flotation circuit. IntroductionThe traditional methodology for flotation scale-up and plant design is based on the ruleof- thumb with safety factors and dimensionless hydrodynamic group similitude considerations. With the recent trend toward larger flotation cells with volumes of 150 m3 and greater in concentrators, the problem of scale-up has become even more acute. The scale-up factors that may have been tolerated on smaller cells are not applicable to larger cells. The transportation of froth in these large cells adds further complexity to the problem. Arbiter et al. (1980) foresaw this problem and pointed out that if scale-up were attempted by rule-ofthumb and trial-and-error, the probability of failure would then increase with scale. This problem is confounded by the fact that the design and scale-up considerations used for a new flotation circuit play almost no role in optimization of the circuit to meet its metallurgical target. This results in a plant design, which may be incapable of meeting its metallurgical targets. There have been several instances where new concentrators have required significant circuit modifications and additional capacity to achieve design targets."

"This paper summarizes diamond exploration techniques used in glaciated terrain, focussing on indicator mineral and geochemical methods applied to glacial sediments. Understanding the ice flow history, depositional history, and stratigraphy of glacial sediments is essential to successful sampling, interpretation and follow-up of indicator mineral and geochemical anomalies related to kimberlites. Kimberlite indicator minerals survive glacial transport over long distances and the relative abundance of each mineral in till is a function of the primary mineralogy of individual kimberlites. Indicator mineral distributions observed at a regional scale define the net effect of glacial dispersal, often along different ice flow directions. Local-scale distributions define individual dispersal trains. The medium sand (0.25 mm to 0.5 mm) fraction of heavy mineral concentrates, * GSC Contribution No. 2002028 prepared from glacial sediment samples, is best suited for indicator mineral surveys. The application of till geochemistry to diamond exploration is increasing because it is significantly cheaper than indicator mineral analysis and it can be performed quickly. The <0.063 mm (silt+clay) and 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm (coarse sand) fractions provide the best geochemical contrast between background and kimberlite-rich till. Kimberlite pathfinder elements that provide good contrast include Ni, Cr, Ba, Co, Sr, Rb, Nb, Mg, Ta, Ca, Fe, K, Ti and LREE, the relative importance of which will depend on kimberlite composition and that of the surrounding bedrock.IntroductionIn Canada, glacial erosion is the principal means by which kimberlite and its associated minerals have been dispersed, from a few tens of metres to tens of kilometres down-ice. Post-glacial weathering has had little impact on kimberlite debris in the glacial sediments, thus boulder tracing, indicator mineral methods and trace element geochemistry of the fine fraction of till (“drift prospecting” methods) can be used to detect kimberlite dispersal within areas covered by glacial sediment. This paper provides a summary of drift prospecting methods for kimberlite exploration in glaciated terrain, and includes examples of reconnaissance- , regional- and local-scale kimberlite indicator mineral and till geochemical distribution patterns.Weathered kimberlite is more susceptible to glacial erosion than the surrounding bedrock, thus many kimberlites in glaciated terrain are found in low or swampy ground, under small lakes, or covered by thin (< 1 m) to thick (>50 m) glacial sediments. Glacial erosion has removed varying amounts of the pre-glacially weathered kimberlite and, in some cases, the hard competent kimberlite below. For example, glacial erosion of the Peddie, McLean and Seed kimberlites near Lake Timiskaming, Ontario, removed pre-glacially weathered kimberlite, leaving a polished striated subcropping surface (McClenaghan et al., 1999a). In contrast, glacial erosion of the B30 kimberlite, near Kirkland Lake, Ontario (Fig.1), was much less vigorous and left a >10 m cap of soft and highly weathered dark green clay-rich kimberlite (McClenaghan et al., 1996). The thickness of remaining pre-glacially weathered kimberlite will influence the geophysical signature of the kimberlite."

"SGS implemented two rules-based fuzzy logic expert applications on two grinding circuits operated by Peñoles Group in Mexico. Both expert systems are based on control strategies that push against process constraints to improve throughput. Based on proven methodologies, the projects also required some new approaches that led to permanent changes to the mill control strategy.This paper provides descriptions of the implementation, operation and performance of both expert systems. It also reviews how improved production rates were achieved through the use of a common set of expert technology tools. An overview of the resulting control strategies implemented on the two circuits is presented. The paper also discusses the identification of the process constraints within each circuit and how these constraints are used within the expert systems.INTRODUCTIONMexico-based mining company Peñoles Group and the Advanced Systems group at SGS, formally known as MinnovEX Technologies Inc., collaborated on the implementation of two expert systems in two grinding plants, both located in Northern Mexico.The primary objective of the expert systems was to increase throughput whilst still maintaining the cyclone overflow product size within an acceptable range. The secondary objective was to achieve a high level of utilisation of the expert technology.In order to achieve these objectives, SGS proposed a proven methodology which leveraged the existing operating and technical expertise at site through the client’s involvement in the design and implementation stages. The in-house operating and technical expertise of SGS was also brought to the project and implemented with the client’s approval at all stages. At both sites the final acceptance was defined upon meeting both process and utilization parameters.The development and deployment of rules-based fuzzy logic applications has matured as a technology and consequently, clear definition of process states and their place in the logic structure to control a given circuit are now transferable. The key to the robustness of the control logic depends on selection and tuning rules for maintaining stability and optimizing a given circuit. Application integrators need to have a standardized approach for timely integration and deployment; a critical component to avoid the common critiques that expert applications are idiosyncratic and difficult to maintain."

Au printemps 2011, la Corporation minière Osisko met en production le gisement Canadian Malartic, qui devient la plus importante mine d?or à ciel ouvert au Canada. Pour lui faire place, elle a déménagé un quartier de 205 maisons et construit 6 nouveaux bâtiments institutionnels. Les démarches ont commencé en 2006. La compagnie a d?abord établi l?emplacement du nouveau quartier résidentiel, en collaboration avec la Ville de Malartic, puis fait la conception de ce quartier de manière à refléter au mieux les caractéristiques du quartier à déménager. Elle a ensuite effectué une opération d?assignation consistant à proposer à chaque propriétaire intéressé un lot dans le nouveau quartier. Au total, 140 résidences ont été déménagées en 2008 et 2009 et 65 été rachetées par la compagnie, le tout par des ententes de gré à gré sauf pour un seul cas. La réussite d?une opération d?une telle importance sociale n?a été possible que parce que la compagnie s?est assurée d?un soutien massif de la population et des autorités pendant tout le processus. Cette expérience peut être fort utile pour les nombreux projets miniers dont l?insertion dans la communauté est un enjeu important.

"The Star Lake Mill was commissioned by Cameco (formerly Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation) in 1986 to process a small high grade gold deposit in a remote location of Northern Saskatchewan. The lean approach to the 200 t. p. d. CIP mill to minimize capital and operating costs employs a number of unique features which are described along with highlights from the initial two years of operation.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Star Lake Mine is located 520 kilometers north of the City of Saskatoon (Fig. l) with the nearest population centre in La Ronge 130 km to the south. Gold showings were first discovered in the area in the 1940's with the Star Lake ""21 Zone"" ore body discovered in 1983. The Star Lake Mine started operations in 1986 becoming the first primary gold producer in Saskatchewan in over 40 years. The mine is operated by Cameco (formerly SMOC) with 50\ ownership in a joint venture with starrex Mining Corporation (35\) and Uranerz Exploration and Mining (15%).The limited reserves coupled with the remote location and the price of gold ($300-$350 u.s./oz) at the time the project feasibility was being assessed required a lean approach to make the short term operation successful. This paper describes the approach taken in the design and construction of the Star Lake Mill and describes the mill operation with highlights of the initial two years of operation."

"An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an Intensive Leach Reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in Dec 2007.There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every 10% of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1% to 1% additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall 4% gain in plant recovery.With total gold recovery of 12% in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600g/t in the concentrator feed to the in-line reactor. The recovery of gold in the in-line reactor is in excess of 98.5%.This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory testwork prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefits of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulphides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONBesides picking nuggets off the ground or out of riverbeds, gravity concentration is arguably one of the oldest methods of recovering gold. In circa 6000BC people discovered that gold can be found behind the rocks and in depressions of creek beds. By placing rocks in a stretch of channel with the proper slope the first sluice is built, probably around 4,000 BC, and this method is still practiced today."

"INTRODUCTIONTo bring a mining property into production in the Canadian High Arctic a company must deal with the harsh environment, the short shipping season and the high cost of labour. In trying to minimize the effect of these factors, the concept of a barge-mounted process plant was investigated as an alternative to the conventionally built concentrator. Cominco's previous experience gained at the Black Angel Mine on Greenland's west coast suggested that this would be a practical alternative.The normal shipping season at Little Cornwallis Island is approximately six weeks long, from mid-August to the end of September. All equipment and materials must be delivered during this small ''shipping window."" The logistics problems are enormous; if the conventional approach had been used the major process equipment would have been delivered to Little Cornwallis Island at the same time as the completed barge actually was! Construction would also be starting at the start of the worst climatic conditions, the Arctic winter. Nine months production was gained by opting for the ""Barge"" approach.What the Arctic winters do to the shipping season, so do they affect the productivity and the cost of labour. Construction labour must come from southern Canada. Thus higher transportation costs and higher wage rates, with more overtime and incentives, increase the labour costs to approximately 50% over normal southern rates. Couple these rates with the lower productivity involved with men working in the extreme cold temperatures and the net effort is worth avoiding. A process plant being constructed in Southern Canada can take advantage of more accessible labour at lower costs, increased productivity and a faster construction schedule. The barge concept must still deliver the equipment and materials during the ""shipping window"" but it can in the completed form."

Of the Cyclone fans the under flaw goes to the Mill - the Elbair discharges stack goes to atmosphere.The Elbair wet scrubber had to be redesigned in order to keep it in service."

Mill startup was in November, 1966, at a rate of 5,000 tons per day, expanded to 13,000 in 1973. The primary crushing rate is 1,200 tons per operating hour, and the secondary 750, and they can be operated jointly or separately.DUST COLLECTION SYSTEMS There are seven dust collection systems ventilating the crushing and grinding complex. "Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

"This preliminary paper provides a summary of lab and mill flotation investigations into the copper collector at two Canadian operations. The orebodies illustrated in these studies both contain mainly copper and zinc with uneconomic quantities of lead. Silver is also present as a secondary precious metal.Each mill has advanced to the extended mill trial stage with Uniflot SP129 as the sole copper collector. The preliminary metallurgical results have indicated higher copper circuit zinc and lead rejection is possible as shown in Case Study #2. In Case Study #1, improved zinc circuit metallurgy has been realized during all the Uniflot copper circuit collector trials. A slight increase in silver recovery has also been observed in the extended trials at both operations. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian base metal industry is presently going through a rationalization period in response to low metal prices and low grade ore bodies. The response from flotation mills has been to reduce costs by incorporating new technologies such as energy efficient large cells, low moisture pressure filters and low steel consumption SAG mills. Other optimization strategies have been incorporated to get better metallurgical performance such as improved process control and monitoring techniques.The newer flotation plants have embraced many of the latest equipment innovations but they continue to incorporate off-the shelf reagents like xanthate and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) . New collector chemistries have been mostly unsuccessful. Our approach incorporates the best of the old and new chemistry into proprietary formulations that match the application. We have found most single chemical formulations cannot meet the demands of the optimized modern flotation plant."

"INTRODUCTION Extensive studies have been carried on pure gold to determine the various factors that affect its dissolution in alkaline cyanide solutions. With the extension of milling to refractory ores more intensive investigations on the effect of impurities in the ore on the dissolution kinetics are needed. The present work describes experiments carried on refractory flotation tailings with the object to determine how the recovery of gold could be increased. The effect of arsenic and antimony in the ore and the excessive use of lime are discussed. "The El Abuelo Ca-Fe-magnetite skarn and related hydrothermal quartz veins are located at Cerro Pepita Hill, in southwestern Chubut province of southern Argentina, 1700 km southwest of Buenos Aires. These deposits are developed in a continental magmatic arc environment linked to the Andean orogeny. Iron skarn mineralization is mainly hosted by an Upper Jurassic to Early Cretaceous sedimentary sequence interbedded with Upper Jurassic basaltic andesite, and is spatially associated with Early Cretaceous calc-alkaline dikes. Ore grades vary between 40 and 63 wt.% Fe. In addition, anomalous metal contents (>10 000 ppm Cu and up to 81 g/t Ag) are present in the hydrothermal quartz veins.At least three paragenetic mineral assemblages have been identified in the El Abuelo exoskarn: (1) amphibole > epidote ± chlorite ± quartz, formed by isochemical contact metamorphism; (2) Fe-clinopyroxene ± Ca-garnet, formed during prograde metasomatic anhydrous exoskarn formation; and (3) actinolite ± epidote ± chlorite ± quartz ± magnetite > titanite, resulting from hydrous retrograde alteration of exoskarn. Endoskarn alteration involved an early Mg-Fe-clinopyroxene ± Fe-garnet assemblage followed by retrograde actinolite replacement of pyroxene. Lower temperature hydrothermal alteration related to quartz veins was superimposed on the skarn assemblages, showing an innermost sericite ± adularia ± pyrite ± chalcopyrite assemblage and an external propylitic halo.Some metallogenic characteristics of the mineralization and the geological setting resemble those in several iron oxide copper-gold deposits elsewhere in the world."

"Next to the actual mine of Les Explorations Muscocho Ltée in Montauban, Quebéc, you could find a total of 364 000 tons of flotation tailings assaying 1.4 Au g/t et 82 g Ag/t to the south of the municipality. This tailings pile is what is left of previous operations. Preliminary leaching tests on these tailings in laboratory columns gave interesting results which led to tests in larger columns in 1984 and to a pilot test on a 750 ton heap in Montauban during the summer of 1985.This paper briefly describes the columns tests performed at the Centre de Recherches minérales and the heap leaching test designed and conducted by SOQUEM in Montauban. The key questions about fault reactivation in shales concern the potential enhanced fluid displacement through a previously low-permeability aseismic shale formation. Here we selected a critically-stressed fault cross-cutting the underground research facility of Tournemire (France) which is located in Toarcian shales. Several inclined boreholes were drilled across the 8.5 m thick fault zone characterized by a fractured damage zone (FDZ) and a central 2.4 m thick complex core (FC) made of multiple shear bands with gouge intercalated with highly fractured lenses. The fault was pressurized using a straddle packer system defining a 2.4m long injection chamber normal to the fault surface. Three fault zone intervals were tested, two in the fault damage zone and one in the fault core. A three-dimensional displacement sensor set in the chamber allowed continuous synchronous coupled monitoring of fault movements, injection pressure and flow rate. An anticlockwise 0.22-to-0.05 mm fault slip was captured associated with a 10-to-100 hydraulic aperture increase of the fault. Preliminary analyses of the experiments show that leakage in the fault zone is controlled by strength and stress magnitude contrasts between the fault core and the fault damage zone. Fault damage zone discontinuities display a much higher peak static friction angle than the fault core shear zones, respectively of 34 and 22° that could be related to complex interactions between healing and sealing processes. Fault core leakage is much more dependent on strain than on effective stress variations. Discontinuous, pulse-like leakage, develops following complex failure processes that may simultaneously take place in the gouge zones and along the large pre-existing discontinuities. Such results may be of importance in evaluating fault seal integrity in oil and gas exploration, production or CO2 storage or underground excavations monitoring.

This paper presents ground control best practices in weak rock environments including the "Unsupported" Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve and awareness pertaining to the potentially detrimental effects of using resin grouted rebar in weak rock masses and the false sense of security that the use of resin grouted rebar may instill. Ground support is almost always used in weak rock environments, though the type of support used can vary widely. The development of the Weak Rock Updated Span Design Curve by the addition of 463 case histories of RMR76 values ranging from 25 to 60, has also been calibrated to four different support categories; Category A: Pattern Friction Sets, Category B: Pattern Friction Sets with Spot Bolting of Rebar, Category C: Pattern Friction Sets with Pattern Rebar Bolts and Category D: Cablebolting, Shotcrete, Spiling, Timber Sets or Underhand Cut and Fill. Design of underground man-entry type excavations in North America relies heavily upon empirical analysis. This design requires a higher Factor of Safety than other non-man entry type excavations. A comparison of the calculated ½ span failure Factor of Safety between all the categories is also presented.

There are many conflicting ideas on how, who, and when to engage. Given the large number of communities and varied cultures, each resource development company must equip itself with a better understanding of the people they are planning to work with.The lecture will begin with a basic historical perspective on treaties and the various societies across Canada. We will also explore the current situation many communities find themselves in today. Building a meaningful relationship with a community is the foundation for a lasting partnership. Every community is unique and every approach to engage communities must be just as unique. The lecture will outline some basic steps that can lead to a better relationship building process between the communities and companies."

This paper presents the results of a research investigation leading to the development of a technique for the measurement of the surface permeability of Indiana Limestone. The tests are conducted on a cuboidal block of the limestone with a flat surface that can be sealed to create a circular aperture through which water influx can take place. Computational results for Darcy flow are used to interpret the results of the experiments. The water entry area can be moved over the surface area of the block to investigate, quite conveniently, the distribution of permeability across the surface of the limestone block sample.
