Properly designed evapotranspirative (ET) cover systems can greatly reduce the amount of infiltration and groundwater recharge (deep percolation) into potential acid generating mine waste. In arid and semi-arid environments, infrequent precipitation, low measurable subsurface fluxes, spatial variability within mine waste and cover material, and evapotranspiration from below the cover system create challenges to monitoring moisture flux in these systems. Sloped ET single-layer (monolayer) cover depths and a variety of reclamation treatments are being studied at a copper tailing impoundment in Arizona, USA. To monitor the performance of different ET cover systems in response to precipitation patterns, four different test plots consisting of two different cover depths and two different vegetation densities were instrumented with heat dissipation sensor nests. The sensors measure the soil water pressure potential and allow hydraulic gradients to be determined within and below the cover systems to depths of 180 cm. Three replicate sensor nests were installed in each test plot to account for variability in materials and test plot treatments. Data collection occurs twice daily and is ongoing. Weather during the 26-month monitoring period was characterised by two months of greater than normal precipitation followed by nine months of normal precipitation and 15 months of abnormally dry conditions. Monitoring data indicate that deep percolation occurs in response to periods of extended precipitation, however, drying was observed to depths of six feet below the surface in all test plots. Using conservative assumptions regarding tailing hydraulic properties, one-dimensional downward flux predictions based on the monitoring data indicate very low (Additional long-term monitoring and installation of deeper and replicate monitoring sensors into tailings without cover systems are recommended to evaluate the long-term ET cover system performance and develop a better understanding of deep percolation rates at the sites.

Ever since it made its debut in 1962, in the form of a Robbins 31R, the raiseborer has become an accepted tool in the mining and civil construction industries. The first raiseborer to be used in the Witwatersrand goldfields made its appearance in 1968. This was a Robbins 42R which could raisebore 185m deep holes to 1,22m diameter. From 1968 to 1973 capability increased with the introduction of first the 61R, then the 71R and finally the 83R, which could raisebore 610m deep holes to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for larger holes but the cost of bigger, more powerful machines requiring larger, stronger drill pipe, cutters and other accessories was prohibitive. To avoid replacing existing models such as the 71R, and in order to increase their capability, the concept of reaming in two stages sequentially was developed jointly by a German drilling equipment manufacturer, Wirth, their South African subsidiary, Transbor, and a local contractor, Rocbor Raiseboring and Mining Contractors. The result, the Sequential Reaming Head, proved most successful and existing machines, normally limited to 2,44m diameter holes, could now ream to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for even larger holes. In order to maximise the use of the sequential reaming head to meet this demand the HG330, and subsequently the HG330SP raiseborer were developed. Using a 4,26m/6,02m cutting head, these machines have raisebored holes 1000m deep in hard rock. The raise- boring of the first major hole to be excavated by this combination, the 484m deep x 6,02m diameter surface shaft at Premier Mine is described. Reference is also made to six other shafts which have been completed or are under construction.

The Early Permian Aldebaran Sandstone is the main hydrocarbon reservoir in the Denison Trough. Contained hydrocarbon gas has a wet gas index (C1/CI - C4) of between 0.87 and 0.97 (N=10), and constituent methane has 813CPDB values ranging from -51.5 to -36.2% (N=10). These values clearly indicate that the gas is thermogenic rather than biogenic. Considering the predominantly humic nature and maturity of all organic source material for the gas, the methane 813C values are anomalously low, with typical values for humic methane present in natural gas formed at similar maturity levels significantly higher at -26 ¦ 5%o. This suggests that, in addition to disseminated organic matter in underlying marine mudrocks of the Cattle Creek Formation, methane substantially more depleted in 13C was derived from coal seams of the Reids Dome beds, a thick coal measure sequence which underlies the Cattle Creek Formation and, in the south, the Aldebaran Sandstone. This methane is likely to have S13C values of between -75 and -40 oo, based on the known isotopic composition of dry gas trapped in humic coals of similar rank in the Sydney Basin and elsewhere in the Bowen Basin. In addition to the low methane S13C values, the contribution of coal seam methane would explain the fact that, (1) methane S13C values do not show the normal increase with decreasing gas wetness, and (2)013C%o (ethane-methane) values do not show the expected decrease with decreasing gas wetness. The presence of co-existing, isotopically heavy CO2 (S13C = +2.0 to +3.4%0, N=3) in the Glentulloch and Merivale Fields is consistent with the view that natural gas in the Aldebaran Sandstone is in part coal seam derived.

Mechanically coupled rock bolts encapsulated in cementitious or polyester cartridge resin grouts have been widely adopted for various underground rock reinforcement applications. Resin grouts are considered a superior product, however, both systems have their advantages and limitations, with the relative performance, quality installation cost and cycle time as the most notable parameters. Both applications have optimal rock bolt combinations and preferred ground conditions. Cementitious grouts are favourable for use with secondary deep embedment anchors. These are installed using various equipment with a series of autonomous tasks required to complete the installation cycle. The cartridge resin system can be utilised by a bolting or face boring rock drill to complete the full support installation cycle. This reduction in equipment changeouts mid-cycle generally deems it the more practical application and popular choice for primary support. Self-drilling anchors (SDAs) and hollow bolts have been a viable alternative to traditional rock reinforcement in variable and challenging ground conditions. Using a pumpable post installation grouting system, SDAs have proven to aid the quality of installation, but due to the additional equipment and cycle steps associated with application, the cycle time is increased. In recent years, fully mechanised bolting equipment designed to utilise a combination of self-drilling anchors and a thixotropic pumpable resin installed in a single pass has entered the market. This innovation is anticipated to deliver the advantages described above, with fewer limitations, and significantly improved development and rehabilitation rates. St Barbara Mining and Byrnecut Australia, supported by Master Builders Solutions, were first to conduct extensive trials and implement this rock bolting approach in an Australian hard rock underground mine and record the actual performance.

Electroslag remelting (ESR) today and into the future, will still be the main process for producing high-quality ingots by suppressing segregation, not just refining chemical composition from impurities. This paper analyses state-of-the-art electroslag refining with a focus on ESR with consumable electrodes, and recent technology with liquid metal supply (ESR LM) in view of their refining abilities and development trends, taking into consideration that the size of the ingots required by industry continues to grow, and the composition of new materials sophisticates to withstand increasingly higher mechanical and temperature loads . The yield of suitable metal in large ingots produced by conventional casting is low due to problems of element segregation by height and crosssection. For example, conventional ingots for nuclear powerplant rotors today reach nearly 700 t in weight. Attempts to directly replace such giant ingots with big-diameter ESR ingots weighing approximately 400 t were also unsuccessful because of growing segregation. Modern ESR equipment and technologies produce 200–250 t of ingots of satisfactory quality, reaching 2.5 m in diameter, implementing the change of consumable electrodes during remelting to increase ingot length. Another way to mitigate segregation is to enlarge the smaller diameter ESR ingot by a 500– 800 mm coaxial layer to the desirable diameter by ESR in the current-supplying mould (CSM). Modelling and experiments prove that refining from impurities and non-metallic inclusions at ESR most effectively occurs at the slag bath and liquid metal pool interface because the ESR LM has provided the same desulfurisation. ESR’s special refining capabilities in CSM come from the much longer time of LM residence shown at titanium purification from hard-melting nitride inclusions that are unremovable in vacuum arc remelting (VAR) and electron beam melting (EBM). Implementation of ESR technologies in CSM, especially with LM supply, is prospective to produce heavy enlarged and hollow forging ingots with prevented development of segregation due to dividing cross-section and reducing overheat of solidifying metal.

Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist.The minerals industry requires specific technical expertise in mining and mineral process engineering, geoscience, environmental science and social sciences to maintain and operate its current business and to develop future projects. A steady supply of new graduates is essential to replace not only retirees, but also those who left the industry during the recent downturn. The supply of trained graduates is however not instantaneous, and there is a four-year lag from entry into university to graduation. It is essential that this lag in human resource supply and a likely shortage of knowledgeable, qualified talent is taken into account when considering risks to the business of mining. The shortage of skilled professionals has in the past resulted in unsustainable salary expectations and is likely to pose financial and execution risk to new projects. This paper will review some recent statistics of students in training from around the world and explore what action is required to not only sustain the training courses that provide future ready talent to the mining industry, but also ensure that graduates from these courses are equipped to create change and be leaders in the industry. The future prosperity of the industry is dependent on delivering sustainable stakeholder returns through the cycle. This will be achieved by developing capable individuals that can respond to the complex, adaptive challenges facing the industry.*This is an abstract only. Portals to access underground mines are important infrastructure and their design requires careful consideration. Portals are generally expected to last for the life of the mine. Typically, the exposure of personnel and equipment is high, with many hundreds of movements through the portal per day. Consequently, the risk associated with geotechnical instability must be extremely low. Portals are often established from a boxcut. In areas where the weathering profile is well developed, the design and execution of the boxcut can involve significant effort, with the objective of minimizing the volume of the boxcut, whilst ensuring that conditions at the design depth are suitable for establishing a stable portal. Properly designed site investigations are a critical part of this process. Currently available portal design guidelines have not been updated for decades, however the equipment and ground support systems have changed significantly in recent years. Many mine portals have since been constructed in a relatively short time frame with success, often in challenging ground conditions using some of the more modern approaches to ground support. This is beneficial because delays in establishing a portal will generally delay other critical path activities, and lead to cost overruns.

Coal and gas outburst is a common hazard in coalmines and due to the complexity of its nature, efficaciously predicting the possibility of its occurrence is intricate. The mechanical and gas flow properties of coal, in situ and mining-induced stresses and geological structure are involved in outburst occurrence, whereas suggested thresholds for its prediction do not consider them all. Numerical modelling is known as an effective method that can not only consider couple the effect of different physics but also analyse the effect of associated parameters. In this paper, a coupled fluid flow and geomechanics model has been developed in COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate outbursts by considering the effect of gas pressure and composition, damage mechanics on related coal properties, and progressive excavation and mining-induced stress. For the proposed fully coupled outburst model, the effect of pore pressure and sorption are applied to the stress while the influence of stress changes and damage are considered in updating coal porosity and permeability in each time step. In addition, to study the effect of mining-induced stress, the excavation process is simulated by changing the material properties over time according to the schedule of heading development. Then, outburst initiation is analysed from the energy point of view by using the concept of energy conservation law. The simulation results are used in calculating energy sources of the outburst initiation, also, the effect of particle size and ejection velocity are studied, and the significance of particle size effect on the energy analysis and deformed coal on outburst initiation is discussed.

Reflectance spectroscopy is now an established technique for mineral exploration and ore characterisation. The efficacy of the technique as a tool to characterise the main iron ore and gangue mineralogy at African Minerals Ltd’s Simbili iron ore deposit in north-central Sierra Leone was tested through reflectance spectroscopic analysis of 13 000 pulped drill reserve samples using CSIRO’s HyLogger-1™ system. Specifically, integration of reflectance spectral data with more traditional methods of analysis, such as geochemical analysis and Satmagan measurements, characterised the mineralogy (ie hematite versus goethite) of the oxidised ore at Simbili, quantified the Al associated with goethite and hematite and evaluated the distribution of the main gangue minerals – kaolinite and gibbsite. Relative changes in the Fe2+/Fe3+-bearing oxide and silicate mineralogy, based on mineral indices derived from reflectance spectroscopic measurements, appeared well-related to changes in the ore profile mineralogy consistent with the main ore types identified at Simbili, as representative of an oxidised banded iron formation sequence. Spectral calibration models, developed from a well-characterised training set of mineral mixtures, representative of the oxidised ore zone mineralogy were used to quantify the distribution of Al associated with kaolinite and gibbsite and the iron oxides, goethite and hematite. Combining these mineral spectral parameters with compositional data enabled the differentiation of Al-substituted goethite and hematite and resulted in the identification of low Al-bearing, or ‘clean’, goethite and hematite from high Al-bearing, or ‘dirty’, goethite and hematite. Spectral quantification of the iron oxide Al composition provides a far more rapid means of quantifying the Al substitution in iron oxides at the deposit scale compared to traditional techniques such as X-ray diffraction analysis. It also enables a level of volumetric characterisation and the potential for large-scale (ie three-dimensional) mapping, which was not previously possible with other techniques. The potential of the technique was also highlighted when mapping the distribution of the main Al-bearing contaminants (gibbsite and kaolinite) identified in the oxidised ore zone at Simbili. Delineation of such zones provides a guide to managing the most appropriate processing options (ie upgrade potential) within a mineralogical framework. Three-dimensional modelling of the gangue phase distribution may also allow the mapping of lithological and/or structural controls that may be prevalent at Simbili. This work highlights the value in the application of HyLogging™ technology for rapid resource characterisation, particularly for volumetric identification and mapping the distribution of both the economic and gangue phases, which otherwise would be difficult to achieve. As such, the technique can provide a fast and inexpensive means to evaluate ore and gangue mineralogy at the deposit scale and provide a first-pass assessment of the mineralogy and compositional attributes, with the potential to better predict ore metallurgical properties.CITATION:Wells, M A and Ramanaidou, E R, 2015. The Ernest Henry Copper gold mine situated in North West Queensland, Australia, is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper. Currently the open pit produces 11 Mtpa of ore. With open pit mining ceasing in mid 2011 development has begun on an underground sublevel cave mine to extend the life of the operation by another 12 years. When completed the open pit will be 530 m deep and 1.5 km in diameter. The orebody dips at approximately 45° and has been outlined a further 450 m below the base of the pit. This provides some challenges for the Ernest Henry underground mine which is designed to initially truck development and production ore from the end of the pit until a hoisting shaft is commissioned in 2013. Production will then increase to 5.0 Mtpa on its way to an ultimate rate of 6.0 Mtpa in 2016.This paper will focus on the capital development and infrastructure requirements for the underground mine. Areas covered include mine accesses, ore handling system, accommodations for the dip of the orebody, primary ventilation design, dewatering systems and selection of an underground workshop over surface only maintenance.Discussions include the complications arising due to the mine being located directly below a large open pit and the combination of first principle cost analysis and risk assessment which has been used to safely optimise the feasibility study designs.

With lower and increasingly variable Fe grades in iron ore resources, the monitoring of Si, Al, Mg and other light elements to meet quality requirements is gaining importance in the iron ore beneficiation industry. The high cost per manual assay and associated manpower requirements often limit the frequency of shift composite samples and laboratory assays. Furthermore, the shift composite assays represent past performance of a plant but are not useful for immediate reactions to feed variations, detection of equipment malfunctions or process control. Automated online analysis of light elements radically reduces the cost per assay and provides repeatable, timely data for process analysis, control and optimisation.A light element online slurry analyser, based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) optical emission technique, will be presented. This paper discusses the analyser design for the iron ore industry and also reviews the performance of the analyser against the manual laboratory. Additionally operator safety, user friendliness and maintenance requirements are discussed.A case study will also be discussed in this paper. The sophisticated measurement technique has been implemented in an industrial automated analyser and sampling system to allow for slurry measurement for up to 12 sampling points. The MTM Process targets treating lower grade and/or problem concentrates that are not attractive to smelters. The process has been developed at laboratory scale for copper and is based on a related development for zinc that has been extensively developed both in the laboratory and through pilot testing. The basis of the process is novel ammonia-ammonium chloride leach chemistry adapted to give high copper extraction whilst being selective over iron, arsenic and many other elements. The preferred flow sheet depends on location, especially infrastructure and utilities. These impact upon the leach and crystallisation stages more than copper reduction.

The use of an equivalent continuum for a rock mass is not always suitable for situations where the failure is structurally controlled by discontinuities as in the case of wedges in the tunnel roof. In these instances, discontinuum approaches are usually preferred. Rock joints that are filled with soft infill are likely to be the weakest planes in a rock mass, having a dominant influence on its overall shear behaviour. In this case, the joint material model adopted for the discontinuities should be able to describe important mechanisms, such as asperity sliding and shearing, post-peak behaviour, asperity deformation, and the effect of the soft infilling. The latest version of a soil-infilled joint model is discussed here. It describes more comprehensively than previous models the occurrence of dilation and compression with lateral displacements, and also represents the hardening mechanism related to asperity interference as observed in the laboratory that cannot be readily captured by the existing joint models. An analytical approach for the analysis of rock wedges structurally controlled by soil infilled joints is presented.The analytical approach presented in this paper for assessment of symmetric rock wedges in the roof of a tunnel demonstrates, that the peak shear strength of the joint may not be fully mobilised before detachment of the wedge. The analysis verifi ed that an overestimation of the factor of safety may be observed when an elastic-perfectly-plastic joint model was assumed, whereas the computed maximum factor of safety was considerably less when adopting an appropriate soil-infilled joint model.

"The Cerro Corona mine consists of a Cu-Au porphyry deposit located in the Andes of northern Peru. The deposit comprises a typical Cu-Au multiphase porphyry mineralisation that has been overprinted by an epithermal event. This has generated a complex pattern of argillic alteration facies, which was accompanied by a locally structural-controlled Au-Cu mineralisation with the presence of gold and limited Cu sulfides and sulfosalts. These features, along with the porphyry-style mineralisation, produced a multifaceted occurrence of gold.Since the beginning of operations at Cerro Corona in 2008 there has been a continuous improvement of the geological and mineralogical knowledge. All mineralogical studies have mainly focused on host rock types and, to a lesser extent, alteration minerals, but little work has been done on the mineralisation itself. As a consequence, limited mineralogical information was available for use in the process optimisation initiatives.In the last two years, a series of mineralogical characterisation studies were undertaken with two main goals. First, to gain an understanding of the mineralisation genesis and second, to obtain a detailed characterisation of copper and gold minerals to support ongoing process optimisation. The first goal was achieved by conventional optical microscopy while the second required electronic microscopy and other microanalyses due to the necessity of quantifying several minerals of interest for the processing.The results were used to refine pre-existing geometallurgical domains, explain copper and gold losses in the flotation process and to some extent, improve copper and gold recoveries. The mineralogical characterisation is an ongoing work. Direct relationships between rock texture and BWi (grindability index) have been established based on geological and metallurgical information supported by optical microscopy observations, gathered from 731 samples.Each recognised rock texture is observed to be related to a certain BWi range and, this texture is also characteristic of distinct lithological subunits (recognisable at mapping scale). Therefore, this relationship may provide an important tool for early milling in situ estimation.Since each textural type is a response to rock formation conditions, the causality of the relationship between BWi and texture is based on such conditions and, particularly, on the interfacial free energy among its components.According to the abovementioned textural features, the greater the free interfacial energy between mineral components, the greater the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries and, consequently, the greater the necessary energy required for milling.If the textural evidence indicates that the rock was able to adjust the shape and/or size of its components – in a natural tendency of all systems to minimise energy– then the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries will be lower.

In situations where foundation piles are located in proximity to existing or future tunnels, it is typical for the tunnel owner to require that sleeving of the piles be carried out to at least the invert of the tunnels to minimise any load transfer to the tunnel lining. In competent rock, this practice may be sometimes unnecessary, thus uneconomical. This paper presents an assessment of the effect of pile loading from one of the multi-storey buildings at Barangaroo South in Sydney on the adjacent future Sydney Metro tunnels. It was originally required by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) that the piles be sleeved below the tunnel invert level; however, the building developer wanted to reduce the pile sleeving depth to achieve a more economical solution due to the large number of load transfer piles being required for the project. To assess this feasibility, a full 3D commercial numerical code, FLAC3D, was used to carry out this complex soil-structure interaction analyses. Based on these assessments, it was demonstrated successfully to the TfNSW that the pile sleeving may be terminated at 2 m above the tunnel invert level. For this arrangement, the investigations found that the loading on the piles should have negligible adverse impact on the tunnel lining design. As a result of such an assessment, the proposed pile sleeving level was approved by TfNSW, thus offering an economical foundation solution for the project.CITATION:Azad, F M, Oliveira, D A F and Wong, P K, 2014. The active history of foreign investment in the mining industry has resulted in Australia emerging as a major world producer of a range of mineral commodities. The current contribution to the national economy represented by mineral production and export revenues would not have occurred without both capital and expertise provided by foreign investors in the past. The initial foreign investment has led to the formation of Australian majority owned and controlled multi-national mining groups such as BHP Limited, CRA Limited and MIM Holdings Limited. These Australian companies, and others, are playing a significant part as foreign investors in the mining industries of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Indonesia. The study examines issues of importance in foreign investment in each of the countries. It concludes that in Indonesia, the nationalisation of the Dutch mining industry in 1957 did much to deter foreign investment. The remarkable degree of policy stability brought about by the Contract of Works system since 1967 has gone a long way to restoring that confidence. The level of investment in the Indonesian mining sector is steadily increasing. Its attraction to Australian investors is a combination of policy stability, favourable fiscal terms, geological prospectivity for a range of commodities and proximity to Asian markets to the north. PNG has a stable policy regime which until recently has been free from political interference at the administrative level. As such, investors were developing confidence in the system and investment was progressively increasing as evidenced by growing exploration expenditures up to 1988. The 1989 Bougainville revolution caused a re-assessment of PNG's investment and country risk. The recent Mt Kare incident has further raised concerns over the government's ability to guarantee internal security. Foreign investors are faced with weighing concerns with the risks of operation in PNG against the undoubted geological prospectivity of the country. The fiscal regimes of Australia, Indonesia and PNG were compared by means of a simulated open pit gold mine in each country. The effect of taxation is examined by reference to the relative change in project internal rates of return (IRR). The comparison of the relative differences between pre-tax and post-tax IRRs provides a measure of the relative attractiveness of each fiscal regime.

Belt conveyor transfers are the most likely location for high wear rates and failures. Belt transfers are necessary to change the direction of conveyed material and will remain a part of belt conveyor systems into the future. Burden being accelerated due to fall and changes in direction from one system to the next, prevents steady state flow which introduces component fatigue. The conveyor belt is considered the greatest cost item over the life of a belt conveyor system and consumes considerable downtime to replace, therefore a financial incentive exists to preserve this high-cost item. Other issues created at the transfer include health risks of uncontained dust and product losses due to spillage. Additional consideration to support the belt is one way to improve the life of components and contain dust within the transfer chute. The humble impact cradle/bed has changed little over the years whilst conveyor systems have achieved ever greater flow rates. Further development of the impact cradle is an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime. The peak technology on the market for conventional impact belt support is the dynamic impact cradle, which ensures the belt support area under the chute allows for some dynamic travel, whilst also maintaining a consistent skirt board area. The impact energy at a transfer when installed with Kinder Australia’s dynamic impact belt support system was measured to further understand the forces involved and how they compare with static belt support systems. Adding further dynamic capacity to the load zone has been shown to increase belt life by at least 30 per cent. Other components also benefit from reducing impact energy in the transfer and the incorporation of polyurethane bushes at roller supports has been employed further increase roller and frame life. Kinder Australia has developed a unique and innovative range of belt support technologies that further promote dynamic travel whilst maintaining a consistent skirt board area without a significant increase in belt-friction tension. Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked contrast to the pyritetelluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related.These highly siliceous telluride-free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile lodes, while possessing an apparent overall relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E. dipping strike faults.INTRODUCTIONThe Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area lies N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie and is separated from the Golden Mile by the Golden Pike fault. The orebodies discussed lie in an area approximately 3 miles long by 1 mile wide (Fig. 1).The area includes the site of the original discovery of gold in the Kalgoorlie district in 1893. There have been numerous mining operations over the years, the bulk of the production coming from two orebodies, Mt. Charlotte and Hannan's North. These have provided approximately 900,000 tons of the 1,100,000 tons of ore mined in the area.Production to date from the principal orebodies in the area has been as follows.1. From 2002 to 2006, longwall mining was undertaken directly beneath the Cataract Tunnel, which is a 100-year-old, heritage-listed tunnel in Hawkesbury Sandstone responsible for delivering 20 per cent of Sydney’s annual water supply. At one location, undermining resulted in movement of at least 350 mm along a known fault that transects the tunnel. During this movement, the continued operation of the tunnel was ensured through a careful system of planning, monitoring and management.Of key importance to the success of the operation was the use of advanced numerical modelling to guide operations at all levels, including feasibility assessment, pre-mine mitigation works, monitoring design, operation performance and post-mining condition. This allowed many aspects of the potential impacts to be explored, including joint movements, rock mass deformations and changes in permeability. A key challenge was to successfully model near-field influences on adverse geological structure due to very far-field effects. This paper explains the model’s conceptual development, calibration, performance and limitations.Modelling provided the confidence to manage the impacts of large mining-induced movement on key infrastructure and ultimately predicted fault movement accurately.
