In September 1988 the Imperial Smelting zinc - lead blast furnace at Avonmouth England, was uprated from its then 52 week annual rated capacity of 90 000 tonnes/year of furnace zinc to 110 000 tonnes. In order to provide sufficient extra feed the sinter plant was likewise uprated in April 1989 by increasing the blowing rate of the sinter/acid plants from 100 000 to 120 000 Nm3/h, effectively a 20 per cent increase. In the 12 months after the uprate zinc production was only 85 000 tonnes. Two years after the uprate zinc production had increased to 100 000 tonnes, but it was not until January 1992 that a rolling 12-month zinc production of 110 000 tonnes was consistently achieved. This paper describes the problems encountered with the uprate and how they have been or are being overcome. It deals chronologically with events starting with the restart of the ISF at the end of 1988 and covers the following issues and their resolution: 1. Initial shortages of sinter due to an offset in uprate timing. 2. Greater difficulties in operating the larger furnace particularly on start-up, the greater tendency for iron production and serious slagging problems. 3. Coincidental timing of deleterious trends in slag chemistry. 4. Refractory problems in the furnace shaft and condenser. 5. Shortages of sinter due to commissioning problems with the wet gas and sinter tip end fans, and difficulties in obtaining sufficient sinter hardness. 6. Unrealised full benefits of the sinter-acid uprate due to a late change in design to dispense with sinter gas recirculation, but offset by successful use of oxygen. In a planned maintenance stop in September 1992 further improvements to the furnace design were carried out to resolve the refractory problems, and with improvements to the sinter plant the furnace zinc output capacity is planned to rise to a rate of 120 000 tonnes/year within two years.

It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. This paper outlines the advances made in vacuum filtration as developed by Outomec Process Filters and details the results obtained at a number of Australian installations. The first section of the paper details the technical advances made by the use of ceramic media in vacuum filtration and explains the reasons for the use of the technology. The second part of the paper discusses a number of Australian installations of the ceramic vacuum filter and where possible compares the actual experiences with those predicted from the test work which preceded the installations. The Ceramec Capillary Vacuum Filter is a vacuum disc filter which combines the proven mechanical attributes of a disc filter with exciting new ceramic vacuum technology from Outomec of Finland.

The Mt Tom Price deposit is a world-class high-grade hematite deposit in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia with an original resource of 900 Mt of almost pure hematite, averaging 63.9 wt per cent Fe. Petrological and geochemical studies at both the Southern Ridge and the North deposit at Mt Tom Price have identified three hypogene alteration zones between unmineralised BIF and high-grade iron ore: distal magnetite-siderite-stilpnomelane; intermediate hematite-magnetite-ankerite-talc-chlorite; and proximal martite-microplaty hematite-magnetite-apatite alteration zones.Fluid inclusions trapped in siderite within the distal magnetite-siderite- stilpnomelane alteration zone at the North deposit revealed primary high salinity (25.5 eq wt per cent NaCl-CaCl2) inclusions that homogenised between 107¦ and 142¦C into liquid. Fluid inclusions trapped in ankerite within ankerite-microplaty hematite veins in the intermediate hematite-ankerite-magnetite-talc-chlorite alteration zone at the North deposit revealed mostly H2O-CaCl2 pseudosecondary and secondary inclusions with salinities of 22.4 - 25.4 eq wt per cent and 22.9 - 25.9 eq wt per cent CaCl2, respectively. Pseudosecondary inclusions homogenised between 153¦ and 449¦C and secondary inclusions homogenised between 103¦ and 157¦C. Fluid inclusions trapped in apatite within talc-microplaty hematite veins in the intermediate hematite-magnetite-talc-chlorite-apatite alteration zone at Southern Ridge revealed that primary, medium salinity (7.0 - 9.0 eq wt per cent NaCl) inclusions homogenised between 181¦ and 257¦C and primary high salinity (22.8 - 25.9 eq wt per cent CaCl2) fluid inclusions homogenised between 118¦ and 257¦C into liquid. Microthermometric analysis of quartz from quartz-hematite veins from the Southern Batter Fault, Southern Ridge show a complex fluid inclusion history. Primary fluid inclusions consist of: low- and high-salinity H2O-NaCI inclusions trapped at temperatures of approximately 140¦ to 230¦C; vapour-rich inclusions of unknown compositions; and æcomplexÆ salt-rich (Ca, Mg, K and Na inclusions).Secondary inclusions consist of medium-salinity fluid inclusions trapped at temperatures of about 140¦ to 280¦C.A two-stage hydrothermal model is proposed for the formation of both the Southern Ridge and North deposits. Early 1a hypogene alteration involved the release of hydrothermal NaCl-CaCl2-rich (25.5 eq wt per cent) basinal brines (110¦ - 150¦C) from the underlying Wittenoom Formation and directed upward along normal faults and focused within the silica-rich rocks of the Dales Gorge Member, by the shales of the underlying Mt McRae Shale Member and overlying Whaleback Formation. Within the Dales Gorge Member hydrothermal basinal brines migrated laterally within large-scale folds with permeability controlled by shale bands and the NW trending dolerite dyke sets. Fluid rock reactions transformed unmineralised BIF to magnetite-siderite-iron silicate BIF, with subsequent desilification of the chert bands. Stage 1b hypogene involved an increase in temperature of the hydrothermal, CaCl2-rich saline (24 eq wt per cent) basinal brines (250¦ - 300¦C) resulting in formation of hematite-ankerite-magnetite-talc-chlorite alteration and the crystallisation of microplaty hematite. Late stage 1c hypogene alteration involved the interaction of low-temperature (~120¦C) basinal brines with the hematite-ankerite-magnetite mineral assemblage. At the Southern Ridge deposit this process was very intense (ie high fluid flux), therefore resulting in the almost total removal of ankerite and resulting in the increased porosity of the ore. Stage 2 supergene enrichment in the Tertiary resulted in the removal of residual ankerite and apatite and the weathering of the shale bands to clay.

This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. However, the recent downturn in world market prices is more serious than previous slumps because in part it is due to technological advances 'in other countries which could have a permanent effect on the world trade of primary products.

The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

Iron Road Limited is currently studying the feasibility of producing 20 Mt/a of high-grade (67 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 2.6 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate has been tested at a relatively coarse grind size of -106 ¦m. The preliminary flow sheet has been confirmed based on initial mine plans and comprehensive metallurgical testing across the range of mineralisation. Extensive Davis tube testing to predict magnetite recoveries has been conducted over the resource, however this was completed at settings different to the optimised settings developed in the metallurgical test work program.This paper outlines the development of an ore treatment simulation in SysCAD which utilises the mine production plan, the Davis tube test data from the resource, data from metallurgical test work and process design criteria to predict magnetite concentrate deliveries. Mineralogical data, including QEMScan results and metallurgical assessments, were a fundamental basis of the process models which enable predictions of concentrate yield and quality. Power and water requirements are also calculated within the model. SysCAD dynamic simulation has been used to assist with the design of the process plant and downstream infrastructure. The relevance of ore-dressing mineralogical investigations to developing and improving metallurgical flow-sheets is discussed and examples are given of the application of such studies to various types of ores and mill products (Au, Cu-Sn, Ni and Sn). The mineralogical investigations described illustrate (a) assessment of the feasibility of ore pre-concentration by heavy-media cyclone separation, (b) evaluation of the potential applicability of various metallurgical treatment processes to an ore, and (c) characterization of mill products to assess circuit efficiency and to guide circuit modifications.

Conventional processing of poly-metallic gold containing flotation concentrates are challenging for a number of reasons. One reason is that substantial copper and zinc in the cyanide leach solution compete with gold and silver for carbon adsorption sites. In this study, metal-cyanide adsorption kinetics and equilibrium are measured on three samples of coconut derived activated carbon and one sample of synthetic carbon. Loading selectivity was confirmed to be in the order gold>silver>copper>zinc for all carbon samples. Constraints on the mineral industry are best treated as issues that have to be understood and managed in partnership rather than in conflict with communities. The Zapopan development at Mt Todd in Australia and the Martha Hill development at Waihi in New Zealand are but two of many recent successful examples at the local level. However, at the national level, the issues are more complex and more difficult to resolve because the most influential stakeholders are now the urban electorates and governments defer to their perceptions when making decisions and policy.

Field trials at three New South Wales and one Queensland coal mines were carried out to gather data on oxygen "run out" times of Self-Contained Self Rescuers (SCSRs), time taken to escape from the mine, distances travelled and the average heart rate of subjects wearing SCSRs. The study has led to a method of predicting the duration of oxygen supply from a SCSR as a function of the wearer's body weight, physical fitness and the prevailing environmental conditions. Escapeway design, planning for emergencies, familiarity with SCSRs and experiential escape training are critical to control panic and maximise the likelihood of survival of a person attempting to escape in an emergency involving fire or explosion.

The development of the Moura Coal Preparation Plant is described, commencing with the first'stage of the plant commissioned in 1963. The subsequent expansion stages are traced through to October, 1973. The plant has undergone frequent stages of expansion and modification and this process is continuing. The development programme for 1974 is described as proposed in late 1973. The characteristics of the Moura and Kianga field coal seams with respect to washability are summarised and some comment is made on the blending of these coals prior to washing, to ensure production of export grade coal within specification.

NEARLY all problems in mining engineering involve the transport and distribution of materials from place to place, and in general the most economically managed mines and plants are those in which the transport of materials has been carried out most efficiently. Of all these transport problems, the hoisting of ore out of the mine and the distribution of same to the various treatment works is perhaps one of the most important. The 1999 edition of the Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the æJORC CodeÆ) became effective in September 1999 and is the latest revision of a Code which was originally issued in 1989, but which has an ancestry dating back to the first JORC report released in 1972. The modifications introduced in 1999, which are briefly discussed in this paper, substantially improved the document, but did not materially alter the fundamentals of the Code, these being the Mineral Resource/Ore Reserve classification framework and terminology, and the requirements and guidelines for public reporting of Resources and Reserves. Codes or guides similar to the JORC Code exist or are under development in other countries, including the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa. It is pleasing to note that the 1999 JORC Code has been used as a model by these countries in developing their latest standards, and has been a major influence in the formulating of international reporting standards. The JORC Code is primarily a document covering the reporting of the results of mining companiesÆ activities to the public. However, mining geologists are interested in practical assistance and guidance in carrying out their duties. The JORC Code provides this in four ways. It establishes a framework within which those preparing and publicly reporting Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates must operate, by setting standards for the classification and reporting of Resources and Reserves and for qualifications of Competent Persons. It establishes the division of responsibility between the companyÆs Board of Directors and Competent Persons with respect to the preparation and reporting of Resources and Reserves, and empowers Competent Persons to materially influence how their Resource/Reserve estimates are reported to the public. It provides an extensive, detailed and practical check list of criteria to be taken into account in the preparation of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates. Finally, it provides a strong measure of due diligence protection in the event of litigation if it is followed with diligence and honesty.

Computer simulation modelling (discrete event) has been used at Olympic Dam (OD) to model the handling of ore from the point of extraction at the stope drawpoint through to the ore stockpile on the surface. Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of such large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. In this instance it can be utilised during the early stages of a project, for example, as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phase. A well constructed and tested simulation model provides a sound base upon which informed business decisions can be made. Furthermore, the behaviour of the model with varying inputs can help build a solid understanding of how the asset behaves when varying inputs and constraints are imposed upon it and, as a result, the major points of leverage that designers and operations personnel have to affect the real world behaviour of those assets. Better decisions can be made when the right facts can be examined, various options explored and conclusions tested. Simulation modelling is one of the tools available to make this process work.

Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. The moisture content of iron ore during handling can range from the dust extinction moisture at the point of arrival at the port to the transportable moisture limit at the point of loading ships for maritime transport. Moisture content and ore composition, specifically fines content, have a large influence on ore flowability. Typically, elevated moisture can result in bottlenecks, downtime and lost productivity due to build-up, conveyor carry-back and blockages, increasing maintenance costs. On the other hand, low moisture can result in increased dust emissions influencing the environmental footprint and product losses. Managing the use of water across the supply chain is therefore critical for service life of equipment, productivity, but also has environmental and social impacts, affecting the social license to operate. Previously, experiments have shown that oscillations induced in iron ore during handling and transport can result in movement of moisture through the ore. This kind of moisture migration depends on the nature of these oscillations, such as the undulation of idlers during conveying, the inherent ore properties and the initial moisture content. Moisture has been observed to move either upwards and/or towards the bottom of the burden. These effects can be exploited to remove excess water from the ore influencing handleability and operation, however, the actual mechanisms of moisture migration are currently poorly understood. The study presented herein involves the use of simulation to examine moisture and ore interactions. Simulations using discrete element method (DEM) and coupled with smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) are implemented to investigate the behaviour of moisture in wet ore in the presence of oscillation. This is conducted at a fundamental level first using glass beads and water which is then compared to iron ore at high moisture content. The results of the modelling are discussed in view of experiments conducted.

Grade control is a process of maximising value and reducing risk, through the delivery of quality tonnes to the mill via the accurate definition of ore and waste. It essentially comprises data collection, integration and interpretation; local resource estimation; stope design; supervision of mining and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of geological understanding led by high-quality mapping and sampling to drive appropriate estimation strategies and mining. Gold veins show various complex features relating to erratic grade distribution (nugget effect), variable geometry and internal architecture. These include variations in dip, strike and width, late-stage faulting/shearing effects and geometallurgy. Such variations generally require close geological understanding to ensure optimum grade, minimal dilution and maximum mining recovery. A well designed grade control program will prove to management and stakeholders that by applying geological knowledge, the mining process can be more efficient and cost effective. This paper reviews the issues of grade control in underground gold mines and focuses on integrated mapping and sampling through three case studies.

In the flotation of fine particles, problems arise which do not occur with coarse-ground pulps. For example, the presence of colloidal or near-colloid- al gangue particles gives rise to ex- cessive entrainment in the froth, with reduced grade as a consequence. If the values themselves are finely dissemi- nated, the recovery usually decreases as the particles diminish in size, so a low recovery is combined with poor grade. Sutherland and Wark (1955) referred to the complications arising from the presence of fines, indicating (p.382) that fine grinding "introduces diffi- culties that have not yet been satis- factorily overcome". At the time of writing, very little work has been done on fines flotation specifically, yet the groundwork has been well laid. The availability of better scientific instruments, together with the general advance of understanding in a wide variety of relevant research fields, has taken us a long way toward finding the reasons behind the problems as- sociated with fines, and also toward finding practical solutions. It would be useful to define what is meant by "fine" particles before going further. To some extent, the definition is somewhat elastic as far as flotation is concerned, because the density of the particles has a bearing on whether or not they act as fines. But in general we are dealing with particles less than about 20 pm in Diameter.

During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. The uncertainties of the grinding performances are then calculated and their impact on the results interpretation is then analysed.CITATION:Brochot, S, 2012.
