An Innovative Process for Comprehensive Utilisation of Clay-Vanadium Ores By adopting conventional processing technologies such as flotation, gravity concentration, and magnetic separation, it is difficult to enrich vanadium mineral effectively. At present, vanadium extraction process usually has not the mineral processing enrichment procedure, but rather uses direct hydrometallurgical process: roasting - leaching - precipitating vanadium for obtaining high quality V2O5 product. But it results in problems, for instance, high consume of auxiliary materials like acid and alkali, serious pollution and high cost of vanadium extraction. In the project study on the ore of a certain clay vanadium mineral, by adopting the test process: scrubbing raw ore with reagents added in - dispersing and segregating with reagents - grading enrichment, vanadium concentrate product with higher grade was made by virtue of reagent's selective inhibiting, and the purpose of upgrading the raw material used for vanadium extraction with hydrometallurgical process is achieved. The process technology obtained from project study features simple process structure, low equipment investment, low cost of mineral processing and pollution-free to environment. It provides high efficient and practical technology for the comprehensive utilisation of clay vanadium mineral, and has a prominent prospect for its popularisation and application.

Prediction of fragmentation by blasting is most commonly based on theassumption that a single distribution of pre-existing discontinuities is present within a blasted rock volume and that the underlying mechanism of failure is tensile failure. It is assumed that the tensile stress field created by a blast initiates and extends radial cracks around the blastholes. Interaction between radial cracks from different blastholes and the free surface creates rock fragments. In reality, fragmentation of the rock occurs due to two mechanisms.One is related to the compressive-shear failure of the rock (mainly rock matrix) close to the blastholes, while the second mechanism is the previously mentioned tensile failure of the rock mass. The secondmechanism of failure occurs in the form of extension of the larger cracks in the region beyond the crushed rock, and this type of fragmentation occurs after the crushing phase. In the case of hard rock or blasting where the extent of crushing is minimal, the currently used prediction methods give a reasonably good result. However, there are many blasting conditions where the amount of rock crushing is significant. In the case where fragmentation of the given rock volume occurs dueto two different mechanisms, modeling of the rock fragmentation with a single distribution function is not appropriate. To model the fragment size distribution generated by two different mechanisms, it is necessary to use a two-component fragment size distribution function and a scaling parameter that will determine the proportion of the fragmented volume created by each mechanism. The purpose of this paper is to present results of blast fragmentation modeling based on two mechanisms of failure. The two-component model (TCM) utilises experimentally determined parameters from small scale blasting and parameters of the Kuz-Ram model, for more accurate prediction of the complete rock fragment size distribution curve. The methodology is such that it is possible to predict complete fragment size distribution, including fines, of ROM product for a future mine, at the feasibility phase of mine design.

Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. The effect of polyelectrolyte flocculants on the de-watering of a tailing suspension of very fine clay was investigated.Sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out in the labqratory to characterise the de-watering properties of the tailing. The results were used to calculate the effect of flocculant additions on the drainage and vaporation components of the de-watering of a clay suspension ponded on to a sand drainage bed.A flocculant increased the drainage rate, but decreased the volume of water that could be removed by drainage leaving more water to be lost by evaporation.The sorptivity values measured in the laboratory were used in the de-watering equation previously established for the tailing to estimate the effect of flocculant additions on the time required to de-water the suspension from 18.2 to 60 per cent solids w/w. The calculated de-watering times were found to increase or decrease depending on the volume of water removed by drainage and the prevailing evaporation rate.

For small particles of niekel flotation eoncentrate (av. size 50 pm) the predominant heat transfer mechanism under suspension smelting conditions, prior to ignition, is conduction from the gas and not radiation from nearby hot bodies. Results of laboratory tests using gas temperatures 380-700°C and furnace wall temperatures 380-1100°C were in accord with heat transfer theory. In practieal flash smelters earlier ignition, and hence better utilization of the space in the shaft, would result from introduetion at the top of the shaft of gases hotter than the ignition temperature of 500-600°C.

THE old mill erected by the .Irvinebank Company consisted of 10 heads of stamps (850 lb.), rock-breaker, Hartz jig, two Krupp tables, two Luhrig vanners, three sand-pumps, one mixer; six flotation vessels, and the necessary settlers. Power was supplied by a small colonial-type boiler, and 10-in. x 15-in Tangye engines. The ore was darted from the mines to the mill and hand-fed, into the rock-breaker, and the broken product elevated into the batter bins and fed into the stamps, the pulp from the stamps passing to a classifier, the spigot to jig, tables, and vanners, the overflow from the classifier passing to settlers. After the removal of bismuth-wolfram concentrates, the pulp was pumped to the molybdenite flotation plant and the olybdenite recovered by flotation.A commencement was made with the erection of the first unit (20 heads) of the new mill in August, 1917, and milling and concentrating commenced in February, 1919.

In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

The problem of ventilating an advancing drive which finally reached 5,550 ft from the fresh air base in rock with virgin temperature of 83°F was solved economically by the use of two 15 h.p. electric fans forcing ventilating air through 281/2 in. dia. fiexible polythene tubing of wall thickness 0·010 in. The saving in cost over conventional metal duct was estimated to be £3· 24 per ft of drive.INTRODUCTIONAs described by Dutton (1965) and Newton (1965) the existing 1,480' ft level drive at the South Mine, Broken Hill, was extended in two stages. The first extension was 3,790 ft, the face then being 4,790 ft from the fresh air inlet. Later, after a vertical ventilation connection was made 1,000 ft back from the face, the drive was extended a further 4,550 ft. The rate of face advance in both stages was about 15 ft per day (3 shifts of 5 ft), 5 days per week. Drive size was 8 ft by 9 ft 6 in. high.The Mines Inspection Act of New South Wales requires 6 hr shifts (instead of the normal 7 in Broken Hill) to be worked if the wet bulb temperature exceeds 80°F. Virgin rock temperature on the 1,480 ft level was 83°F. Inlet air temperature varied with seasons from 58 to 72,oF wet bulb.To adequately ventilate the face, a flow of air of about 11,000 c.f.m. was thought to be necessary.Re-entry time was about 75 min, being governed by the 7 hr length of shift (3 shifts per day) and travelling time.Blasting was permitted only at the end of the shift, in accordance with local industrial restrictions.

Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Kainantu Project is located within the New Guinea Thrust Belt in northern Papua New Guinea. The area has a long history of exploration and production, with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1928 followed by the discovery of vein deposits of gold and copper at Kora in the 1950s and the current Irumafimpa vein gold mine. Current resources on the Kora-Irumafimpa Vein System (KIVS) stand at 1.5 Moz Au, 5 Moz Ag and 217 Mlb Cu.Mineralisation in the region includes gold, silver and copper associated with mid-Miocene age mafic to felsic intrusions. The KIVS occupies a broad north-west-trending mineralised zone more than 2.5 km long and 200 m wide, with the Kora, Eutompi and Irumafimpa veins on the western side and the Judd and Upper Kora veins on the eastern side. Economic mineralisation occurs in two closely related events occupying the same strongly structurally controlled shearing (quartz-Au-telluride veins and sulfide Au-Cu-Ag veins with free Au) and is best described as a significant intrusion-related event with both epithermal and mesothermal facets that does not appear directly related to known porphyry Cu-Au systems as seen at the surface. Significant wolframite is associated with vein quartz of a slightly older age but also occupies the same shear system.The KIVS occurs within a larger mineralised area of approximately 5 × 5 km. It has complex multiphase intrusions, breccias and diatremes that are only partly delineated by drilling and comprises multiple occurrences of Au-bearing veins and porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. The area is considered to have high potential for extending the current resources and is being actively explored. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. Mortlake Works were opened in 1886, and has since grown to the vast undertaking inspected by members of the Institute.The Kent Street Works were closed in 1921. The combination of Stage 1 Geoinformatics legacy data intervention processes with the Stage 2 ultra-detailed airborne geophysical prospecting demonstrates a new approach to converting data to information to knowledge, and converting that knowledge into exploration results.   The Coromandel region of the North Island of New Zealand has long been know to host gold deposits of economic viability (Hauraki Gold Fields). To the SE of this area lies the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) where the geology and structural setting mirror the Hauraki Gold Fields, however mineral exploration in the past has been hindered by the blanketing volcanic ash deposits. Glass Earth Limited recognised that this whole potential epithermal gold province could be effectively explored utilising rapid, risk orientated processing to review legacy geoscience data: The Geoinformatics Data Intervention Process; which in turn directed ultra detailed airborne geophysical surveys over the TVR. Results have outlined 21 new drillable potential epithermal gold targets; and a plethora of other targets with high prospectivity.

A knowledge of the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in slag as a function of composition and temperature is necessary if effective strategies are to be devised to maximise the recovery of cobalt in nonferrous smelting processes. This work reviews previous studies and shows that comparison and evaluation of the results is hampered by variations in the choice of standard states for the species. Published results have been recalculated to a common set of standard states with a preferred value for the Gibbs free energy of formation of cobalt oxide. It has been shown that the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide referred to the solid standard state in iron silicate slags is approximately two, at temperatures from 1523 to 1623¦K. It is suggested that some contradictory results are most likely due to errors in the measured partial pressure of oxygen.

As it is my opinion that deep alluvial mining in Victoria and in the Murray Flats in New South Wales is practically in its infancy, and considering that we, the old school of alluvial miners, who have thirty or forty years' experience to guide us, must in the natural order of things hand over the management of our mine, to the younger and less experienced' generation of miners, I thought that as our Association has been formed for the purpose of disseminating information and the exchange of ideas, a few notes on the practical working of alluvial mines might be of some service to aspirants for the position of mining manager.The greatest difficulty the alluvial miner has to contend against is the immense quantity of water contained in the drifts overlying the wash in the gutters or ancient river beds, and to cope with this water successfully and economically is the point to be aimed at by our mining managers; and if they thoroughly understand this part of their business in all its details, they will not only win kudos for themselves, but will be the means of saving large sums of money to the companies they represent, and, in many instances, will make a success of a venture which otherwise might be stopped for want of funds before it is properly proved. At the present time, although we have had over forty years' experience indraining the deep leads of the colony, I regret to say that a large amount of ignorance still prevails amongst both directors and managers.

The usefulness of laboratory studies - petrology and mineragraphy in the search for, and investigation of, mineral deposits should not be exaggerated, but it should not be overlooked, because such studies will always contribute to an understanding of the geology of the deposits, and can on occasions provide invaluable information not otherwise available. A few examples furnished by the investigations of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will show this.Petrology.In the early stages of the investigation of the King Island scheelite deposit, during the war, when the nature of, the deposit was not understood, a series of samples embodying the exposed rock types was submitted to the Mineragrap;hic Section for petrologicalexamination by the Mineral Resources Survey. It was at once apparent to the petrologist that the King Island scheelite ore was a contact metamorphic deposit, in which a series of argillaceous shales, calcareous shales, impure limestones and limestones had beenintensely metamorphosed. The shales had been converted to finegrained biotite and actinolite hornfels, according to their lime content, and the impure limestones to fine-grained diopside hornfels, garnetdiopside hornfels and garnet hornfels (calc-flint), the garnet being the lime variety grossularite. The limestones, however, after being first converted to marbles, had suffered intense pyrometasomatism, involving substitution of immense quantities ,of silica and' iron for lime and carbonate, and had been converted largely to a coarsegrained garnet rock, in which the garnet was the lime-iron variety, andradite. The silica and iron were derived from the mineralising solutions of the adja,cent ,granite. intrusion, responsible for the contact metamorphism, and were accompanied by tungsten and some molybdenum. The tungsten in the presence of so much mobile lime, was precipitated as schecelite, much of it finegrained and enclosed in or intergrown, with the andradite garnet or the quartz interstitial to the garnet.It was apparent that the King Island scheelite deposit, was a perfect example of selective pyrometallomatic replacement in a bedded contact metamorphic deposit. The bedded nature of the original rocks was preserved, and the scheelite was practically limited to the original limestone beds, 'Which had been so much more susceptible to replacement after recrystallization, than the other sediments. The further geological study of the deposit then resolved itself into the task of mapping the folding and faulting of the deposit, with bore cores to provide the stratigraphic sequence, and establish the number of scheelite-bearing beds.A second example is provided by a petrological investigation of the mineral composition and genesis of the talc deposits of the Gumeracha district of South Austral.ia, which was undertaken at the request of the South Australian ,Mines Department, in conjunctionwith mapping of these deposits. A Good Product Range - So What! While in terms of water, waste management and environment protectrion, the Gippsland Basin may appear to have a good product range, what does this really mean? What it means is that, like any product range, the virtues of the product range must be sold and accepted by a majority of the public. The social, economic and environmental benefits of any enterprise using these products must be sold and accepted by the regional population. Many a budding entrepreneur has failed because he assumed that the public would accept his product, so good did it appear to be! However, we know that such an assumption must be avoided and that a great deal of time and effort needs to be invested in promoting and gaining acceptance of a product to ensure a long term and viable market.

IF a straight line should be drawn on the map (See 1, page 96) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to the west, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the South Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about its central portion, the zone may aptly be termed "The Great Reefton Gold Belt." The occurrence of so many gold mines along this particular strip of country is not at all a matter of chance, but is the outcome of cause and effect. B. P. Thomson (South Aust. Dept. of Mines): Dr. A. B. Edwards presents in the published discussion on the above paper, his interpretation of the dolerite dyke-lode relationship as a major objection to the syngenetic origin for Broken Hill ore bodies to which Mr. Condon subscribes.Dr. Edwards claims that the dyke-lode relationships indicate clearly that the Broken Hill orebody was formed after the folding and regional metamorphism of the Willyama Series. Field evidence compels m:e to join with H. F. King (1958), in finding this conclusion unacceptable-as follows:(1) Broken Hill type mineralization, as defined by King and Thomson (1953), is clearly confined by the regional sillimanite isograd and does not extend into the lower temperature almandine and biotite zones as does the Thackaringa type mineralization.(2) In the Corruga area the writer has mapped a dolerite dyke apparently cutting a conformable quartz gahnite lode of the Broken Hill type (see Edwards 1958, p. 12).(3) At the Champion mine a similar lode is cut by a fine grained granite dyke.An alternative history of the dolerite dykes to that given by Stillwell & Edwards (1956, p. 26) appears possible. It has been suggested by the writer in an unpublished thesis, (Thomson 1955, p. 30), that the pyroxenite and serpentine plugs and dolerite dykes are rheomorphic end-products of a complex regional metamorphic and metasomatic process involving the formation of amphibolite and pegmatite. The analogy in composition between the dolerite and normal amphibolite is close (see Edwards 1958, Fig. 1, p. 22).

THE furnace described in this paper was installed and has been used by the writer for the melting of rich gold-bearing material, and has given complete satisfaction. It may, therefore, prove of interest to other metallurgists who are faced with a similarproblem. A furnace of this type should be most suitable for the reduction of "cyanide preeipitate," "charcoal ash," "anode sludge," &c. formerly the melting was done in fire-clay crucibles, using coke or crude oil as fuel, but this method is costly, slow, and unsatisfactory. A small water-jacketed blastfurnace was also tried on this material after briquetting it, but was discarded in favour of the electric furnace. The furnace may be described as a simple form of the Heroult resistance furnace, with an adjustable upper electrode and a fixed bottom electrode. This is in accordanee with Stansfield's classification of electric furnaces. The heating is mostly due to the resistance offered the current by the molten slag. The melting chamber consists of a steel drum 14 in. in diameter and 21 in. high, and is lined with silica bricks specially made to fit the shell. The internal diameter is G in. The bricks contain 92 % silica, are made from calcined quartzite bonded with fireclay, and are similar in composition to those used for lining steel converters. They are set in a mixture of finely-ground quartzite and clay, and well dried out. The shell is bolted to a steel plate, which forms the decking of a truck running on rails, so that the furnace can be moved under ahood for carrying off the fumes. A cast-iron slag spout is bolted to the shell below the tapping hole, which is 4 in. from the bottom of the shell.
