It seems a duty incumbent on the older members of the Institute to set forth in permanent form some of the results of their experience for the benefit of the younger members; this is the principal object of the present paper, which is the result of a recent examination requiring somewhat unusual geologic investigation. History. The London vein mas first discovered by float and occasional outcrops in the year 1873, four years before the great lead carbonate discoveries of Leadville, but the mine was not definitely located and opened until two years later, when the present locations, Mother, Paris, London, and Hard to Beat, were surveyed for patent. Since 1875 the London mine has been worked almost continuously until 1911, when the force was reduced to a few men only. In its early life the ore was assumed to be free-milling gold-quartz, although lead was a constituent of the vein throughout, and much useless expenditure was made in the erection and operation of a free-gold stamp-mill, with plates and tables for saving concentrates. The vein then opened was in the porphyry-limestone contact, a siliceous lead-ore, clearly most amenable to reduction by lead-smelter. The losses due to this process led in time to the close of the mill. For 20 years past, the mine has been worked under lease and the ore shipped to the lead-smelters in Denver or Salida. In January, 1912,I examined the mine to ascertain whether it was advisable to run a cross-cut tunnel some 4,200 ft. in length to intersect the main vein at a depth of 650 ft. below the present lowest workings. Finding a greatly-faulted zone, a close determination of the geological conditions became necessary to the solution of the problem.

The chief value of a paper like this consists in its statistical tables, putting on record material useful to future inquirers. The data here given have been compiled from time to time as far back as 1874, and subsequently brought up to date. Much of the data could only be procured by personal inspection of the catalogues, as for example those relating to the Lawrence Scientific School, which were taken at that time from the catalogue of Harvard University, on file in the University Library, by the present writer, then an instructor in that institution. These tables of statistics were first prepared for publication by the present writer in 1888-1890 and published in his "Report to the Board of Control of the Michigan College of Mines " (Michigan Mining School) for 1886 to 1890. Later they were revised, enlarged and brought down to date in his reports to the same Board for 1890-92; and since that time they have been, at his request, revised, greatly enlarged and kept up to date by Mrs. Frances H. Scott, the efficient Librarian and Secretary of the Michigan College of Mines. Great credit is due to her for her devotion to this work and her untiring efforts to have the statistics complete as far as possible. The accompanying running commentary is given simply as a string to hold these statistics together, and in order to call attention to a few points. In compiling any tables like those accompanying this paper, one is confronted by serious difficulties, some of which render these results only approximate. In order to insure greater correctness and fullness in the statistics to be published the writer's reports for 1890-92 were sent to the president of every college, university, and technical school in the country, so far as known. Accompanying this was a personal letter which asked of each one his aid in correcting any errors, and in giving fuller statistics. But relatively few answers were obtained, and subsequently from one to many letters have been sent to each institution not formerly reply-

THE copper industry operated at high capacity throughout 1947, with no serious tie-ups in operation as was the case in 1946, when almost the entire industry was shut down by a four-month strike. Refined copper production in the United States averaged 94,250 tons for the first eleven months and deliveries to domestic consumers, including foreign copper for domestic consumption, averaged 114,000 tons per month. On April 29 the import duty of 4d per lb was suspended until March 31, 1949. Copper prices fluctuated considerably for a short time thereafter. Over the year the price of domestic electrolytic copper at refineries on the Atlantic seaboard advanced from 19.225¢ on Jan. 2 to 21.200d on Dec. 24.

Research efforts have not developed techniques for the complete desulfurization of coal that is needed to reduce air pollution caused by burning coal and to reduce the sulfur in metallurgical coke. Sulfur in coal occurs in three forms and of these, the pyritic sulfur occurs as discrete mineral particles and, at least theoretically, should be subject to physical rejection. Pyrite occurring in hard rock mining is concentrated by froth flotation; therefore, the possibility of removal of pyrite from coal by flotation does exist. With this possibility in mind, the flotation and adsorption characteristics of ore and coal-pyrite were compared while using potassium ethyl xanthate as the collector.

The new OSM regulations for ground water monitoring of underground coal mines have been the source of many concerns for the mining industry. Because the regulations were initially written at the federal level, but are being administered at the state level, considerable confusion still exists within the industry as to what is really required. Based on submission and/or approval of more than 30 monitoring plans for existing mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, three basic sections are necessary. They are: 1. background data on the hydrogeologic setting of the mine, 2. the monitoring plan itself, and 3. mining procedures to minimize adverse effects on ground water. Like all of the OSM requirements, ground water monitoring will be a new burden the coal industry must bear, but with proper planning and communication with the regulatory authorities it need not be as bad as originally feared.

THE sheet-ground deposits of the TriState district, because they are fairly uniform in thickness (7 to 11 ft.)-rather flat, with an easy dip to the west-and cover a large acreage, offered a problem of improved transportation. Heading advance in this kind of mine is very rapid and track haulage requires a larger crew of trackmen than do other mines, and a heavy investment in track. The use of some type of rubber-tired truck equipment for underground haulage was under consideration for some time by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The nature of some ore bodies made them not adaptable to truck haulage and some mines that did offer possibilities were equipped with other types of haulage, and the expected savings by the use of trucks did not offset the loss of investment that would be incurred in discarding other equipment. The decision was made to sink a new shaft, designed for skip hoisting, on the Blue Goose ore body, and then develop truck equipment. DEVELOPING TRACTORS AND TRAILERS A study was made of internal-combustion engines for power units in the tractors, but the extreme difficulty of controlling air circulation, and the heavy cost of drilling large churn drill holes for blower installations, led to the adoption of a tractor with a storage battery. The storage-battery tractor that was on the market for mine haulage was impossible to obtain because all were needed for defense work. Several standard electric-truck chassis were purchased and rebuilt in the Eagle-Picher shops. The steering wheel was shortened and set vertical, permitting the driver's seat to be moved forward, and the frame was shortened enough to take the battery box and the fifth wheel support that carried the gooseneck of the dump trailer. The fifth wheel, or turntable, is of the ball and socket type. Fig. I shows the ball fastened to the gooseneck. The socket is split to permit introduction of the ball and is held by through-bolts, and the socket is welded to a ½ -in. plate, which in turn is attached to the tractor frame. Smaller wheels and tires were put on to reduce over-all height. If it had been necessary, the springs could have been reversed, or taken off entirely, to gain additional clearance. The tractors are equipped with 48-cell, 23-plate, 400-A.H. batteries. With the initial tonnage and mileage, the batteries were about 50 per cent down at the end of a shift. Tractors have truck tires 7.50 by 20, 8-ply, front and rear, the rear being dual. After four months of use, the tires are beginning to show signs of failure.* In

Ik presenting this paper I will attempt to answer certain questions proposed at this meeting and describe and illustrate methods of producing sound steel in an economical and hence commercial manner, which are adaptable to the production of practically all steel manufacturers, by readily effected rational changes in the methods of casting, cooling, and subsequent handling of the ingots. In some of the high-grade mills of America, where it is essential to obtain perfectly sound billets or blooms, it is the practice to discard from 35 to 40 per cent. of the crop- or pipe-end, and even with this excessive discard, secondary pipe or shrinkage-cavities are frequently discovered during subsequent working of the blooms and billets into their various manufactured products. The usual discard of from 10 to 20 per cent, from the crop-end of the ingot, which is made by the present generally employed methods of form and solidifying of the castings, certainly does not give the slightest assurance of the saleable product being physically sound or chemically homogeneous. I am aware that in the past there has been and at the present time there still is a decided difference of expert opinion as to what constitutes physically sound steel. Physically sound steel, as I would classify it, must be free from blow-holes as well as pipe. The line of demarcation between harmless and harmful blow-holes is exceedingly difficult to define. It is certainly the better and safer practice to eliminate blow-holes from the saleable portion of the ingots and to form a well-defined shrinkage-cavity or pipe at the upper crop-end of ingot. The Morning silver-lead-zinc mine of the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. is about 'two miles northwest of Mullan, Ida. The lode is a metasomatic fissure vein. The orebody is approximately 2000 ft. long within the bounds of the property and varies in width from knife edge stringers to 50 ft. It has been developed to a depth of 3600 ft. and stands nearly vertical in Revett quartzite, which .strikes north 65" west. The high-grade veins and lenses are generally mixed with waste (siderite, quartz, and quartzite). The average grade of ore to sorting plant in 1921 was 4 oz. silver per ton, 8.6 per cent. lead, and 4.1 per cent. zinc. Wall rock stands only a short time without timbering. The minimum angle of gravity flow is 45". The ratio of waste sorted out to ore is 6 per cent. No gases are generated underground and temperature has no influence on mining operations. Fresh air is forced down the air raise and up the main shaft. Drifting and Stoping Main drifts 12 ft. wide and 13 ft. high are driven every 200 ft. (vertically) and are connected by raises 125 ft. apart. These raises consist of three compartments (chute, tramway, and timber slide) and are for the purpose of ventilation, access, and hoisting supplies to stopes. Ground is stoped between raises. Chutes are placed every 25 ft. for drawing off ore broken in stopes. Waste for filling is obtained from waste raises off the stope in walls or waste is dumped from the level above down the chute compartment of raises, which is bulkheaded so that waste can be drawn off at any floor as required. Timbering Posts and caps for square sets (varying in diameter from 6 to 24 in.) are cut to length in a sawmill on the surface. No preseratives are used. Concrete is not a new, nor even a modern substance. Important structures built by the old Romans before the commencement of the Christian Era are to-day sound and solid— for example, the dome of the Pantheon in Rome, 142 ft. in diameter. I do not propose, therefore, to discuss the durability of the material, as in the mining and metallurgical business, structures, as a rule, are not calculated to endure for two thousand years. I do wish to urge, however, that much of the stone masonry around mines and smelters would have given better results if concrete had been used in place of stone. Concrete looks better; is stronger, cheaper, more durable, more quickly built, and above all requires no skilled labor, except that of the carpenter, who, like the poor, is always with us. Well proportioned concrete, that is to say, having well proportioned ingredients, may be safely relied upon to withstand a compressive or crushing strength of 50 tons per square foot. In most American cities, however, the building laws limit it to the absurdly low figure of 16 tons. This restriction is probably due to the political influence of the building-trades unions, which object strongly to its too free use, undoubtedly owing to its not requiring the services of skilled workmen. I hope to show that quite important construction work may be' undertaken without the aid of the gentleman with the trowel. In some of the isolated districts of the West and Southwest this is no mean advantage. The weight of good concrete, dry, is from 130 to 160 lb. per cubic foot. Ingredients of Concrete. Concrete is composed of four ingredients; viz., 1. Crushed Stone; 2. Sand; 3. Cement; and 4. Water.

Solubilities and densities are reported for alumina hydrates in NaOH solutions under the conditions of the Bayer process employed to purify alumina for aluminum production. The equilibrium constants for reactions to form A102- accurately correlate the effects of NaOH concentration on the solubilities; the temperature coefficients of the equilibria lead to heats of solution of 7.34, 4.76, and 5.24 kcal for the a trihydrate, a monohydrate, and ß trihydrate, respectively. Moderate calcination does not change the solubility of the a trihydrate but increases that of the a monohydrate. At solution temperatures above 100°C, the trihydrates transform rapidly to a monohydrate. Hydro-thermally produced a monohydrate is the stable phase above 20°C. CORNERSTONE of the aluminum industry, the Bayer process for alumina production is based on the difference in solubility of hydrated alumina in NaOH solutions between 170" and 40°C. Solubilities and densities in this system were determined thirty years ago by M. Tosterudl under the direction of J. D. Edwards and C. S. Taylor. The solubility data, which still appear more concordant than those in the literature, are employed to sort out the complex equilibria in this system. The nomenclature for the alumina hydrates is that presented in The Aluminum Industry' and more recently summarized in Alumina Properties.3 a trihydrate is the purified phase analogous to gibbsite, a monohydrate is similarly akin to boehmite, and ß trihydrate is sometimes known as bayerite. Literature Goudriaan4 reviewed the early literature on alumina in NaOH solutions and presented data on the solubility at 30°C of several forms. The gel precipitated from aluminum sulphate or chloride with ammonia and dried at 130" to 140°C had the highest solubility but was unstable, its solubility being cut to one-tenth on standing in NaOH. The solubility of the gel was decreased one-third on calcination at 300" to 400°C, while that of the gel transformed in NaOH at room temperature to a crystalline trihydrate was unchanged on calcination. The preparation produced by slow hydrolysis of sodium aluminate solution with CO, in the air gave solubilities in rough agreement with later values for a trihydrate. The solubility of this form was increased slightly by the calcination. Fricke and Jucaitis5 extended the work to 30" and 60°C with a trihydrate. They also gave solubilities for ß trihydrate (bayerite b), although the residue belonging to the left branch of the solubility curve corresponded to a trihydrate. The residues at high NaOH concentrations were mono and trisodium aluminates, the latter being 3Na2O . AL2O3 • 6H2O. Solubilities of a trihydrate at 95°C and of a monohydrate at 150" and 200 °C come from the work of Magarchak.6 a trihydrate transformed to a monohydrate above 95°C. A few measurements on the solubility at 25°C of an alumina trihydrate prepared by slow hydrolysis of NaAIO, solutions were presented by Sprauer and pearce.? Their analyses showed the monosodium aluminate to have the composition Na2O.Al2O3-2.5H2O.

Phosphate occurs in many places in Egypt, in two main zones: one in Upper Egypt, along the Nile Valley, principally on the right side, and one near the Red Sea coast. In the Nile zone, the principal layers of phosphate rock are to be found: in the mountains east of Mahamid (right side of the valley); in the hills near Sibaiya, also called Sebaieh (both sides); in the hills of Agula, Hagaza and Gurn (right side); and further on, along the camel road leading from Kena to Kosseir, a few miles east of Legheita's Oasis. Following that track, after having crossed the watershed, underlain by rocks like granite, serpentine, porphyry, and diabase, one comes again to the Cretaceous formation containing considerable quantities of phosphate, at Gebel Duwi, Gebel Nakheil, and Gebel Kosseir El Kadim, not far from the coast. More to the north, in the hills near Safaga Bay (Um El Uettat El Wasif) is another rich bed of the same formation. There are reports of phosphate existing near Suez and in the Sinai peninsula, and possibly some other zones can be traced or discovered in the future. The mines are well developed on the right bank of the Nile at Sharawna (near Sebaieh Station) and along the Red Sea coast, at Safaga and near Kosseir. Prospecting work has been done at Gebel Duwi, Gebel Gurn, Agula, Hagaza, and near Mahamid. The phosphatic formation in Egypt is quite variable, not only from place to place, but even within small areas. The phosphate is all of Cretaceous age, as is proved by the fossils found in it. It is considered to belong to the Campanian or, more appropriately, to the Maestrichtian series. The principal fossils are: Alectryonia Villei Coq. sp.; Roudereia Aures-sensis Coq. sp. = R. Drui Mun. Chalm.; Trigonoarca multidentata, Newton.; Cardita libyca, Zittel; Libycoceras Ismaely, Zittel; Nautilus sp.; Ancystrodon libycum Dam.; Corax pristodontus Ag.; Lamma biauriculata Zittel sp. Above the Maestrichtian beds, we have the Danian series, unconform-ably covered by Lower Eocene beds. Under the phosphate is a grayish marly clay, and beneath this, bluish-gray scaly shales resting on the Nubian sandstone (Santonian).

The combustion performance of sub-bituminous slack coal is greatly improved by the removal of the smaller size fractions. Screening processes are not well suited to the size separation, at 1/8 in. or 1/16 in., with coals which are normally wet, and the use of an alternative size-separation device has been investigated. It is felt that this classifier might be applied equally well to other minerals in cases such as this, where precise size limits are not essential. Coal is dropped as a curtain onto a curved metal plate, shaped rather like a ski-jump. The smaller particles, slowed up in their free fall to the plate and also by contact with the metal, leave the plate with a lower horizontal velocity; they can be separated from the larger particles by virtue of their shorter trajectory. The principle of the classifier is obvious from the diagram (see Fig. 1) which shows also the positions, relative to the curved plate, of the point of coal feed and of the dividing plate which separates the streams of coal particles. The horizontal distance between the curved plate and the dividing plate is varied in the tests. It is designated in the general case, by X. Tests were carried out using slack coal with a free moisture content higher than that expected in any commercial operation. The results given in Table I. show the percentage recovery of upgraded product, and the cumulative screen analysis of both the upgraded and reject material, for three different positions of the dividing plate. ONE OF the most hopeful features of the current depression is the discussion which it has en- gendered of ways and means to counteract similar recurrences in the future. 1t is widely recognized that fruitful attack will be directed toward the steady employment of labor, through which the purchasing power of this preponderant class in society will be maintained. S. A, Lewisohn's article' has presented the major factors to be considered; the physical suffering and mental torture endured by those who are deprived of income through no fault of their own, the direct economic losses' sustained in the degradation of 'great, numbers of our population and the disintegration of efficient working forces, and the prime responsibility of owners and managers.

John W. Gruner (Professor Emeritus, College of Science, Literature, and the Arts, Dept. of Geology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis) — It is surprising that two men as well acquainted with the taconite rocks of the Mesabi District as Drs. J. N. Gundersen and G. M. Schwartz should have concluded that the taconite of the Eastern Mesabi before the intrusion of the Duluth gabbro consisted largely of quartz and magnetite. These minerals were "locally reconstituted" into "a wide variety of silicate mineral assemblages" by the gabbro. It is well known, of course, that the silicate mineralogy of the Eastern Mesabi ('about 14 miles in length) is quite different from that of the Main Mesabi which is over 60 miles long. The change from one to the other is abrupt and cannot be attributed to any other cause than the thermal effects of the gabbro. Are we to assume or believe that the taconite of the Eastern Mesabi was radically different from that of the Main range before the gabbro metamorphosed it?

Dr. F. W. C. Schniewind, New York, N. Y.:—Mr. Vogel speaks of briquetting the flue-dust by means of lime. I learned recently in Europe of a process employed with considerable success at one of the blast-furnaces, where blast-furnace cinder is used with lime. The lime and cinder are mixed with the flue-dust, and exposed to superheated steam, which converts the blast-furnace cinder into cement. Briquettes are then formed in the usual way. Mr. Vogel :—The process referred to is the " Scoria process," which has not been in use for some time past. For that reason, I did not mention it. Prof. Arthur L. Walker, New York, N. Y.:—I would ask the commercial name for magnesium chloride, and where it can be obtained ? Mr. VoGel :—I mentioned magnesium chloride, because it has been used abroad to a large extent. In Germany it is obtained as a by-product in the manufacture of potash-salts; in the United States we have been using chloride of lime, which is cheaper. Otto Sussman, New York, N. The fluid mapper, a model relatively new to the petroleum industry, was used to study the effect of various mobility ratios on the areal sweepout efficiency for two typical spacing patterns. The experiments indicated the areal sweepout for the five-spot pattern varied from 51.8 per cent at a mobility ratio of 0.093 to 89.1 per cent for a ratio of 24.4. In the direct line-drive pattern, the areal sweepout varied from 58.7 per cent at a mobility ratio of 0.089 to 92.0 per cent at a ratio of 24.8. The fluid mapper may prove useful to determine quickly the effective areal sweepout for any well spacing. INTRODUCTION The effect of the mobility ratio on the areal sweepout efficiency during primary depletion of a water drive reservoir and during secondary recovery operations has recently become more widely recognized The mobility ratio, M, is defined as: _ kjp (displaced fluid) k/u (displacing fluid) where k = effective permeability u = viscosity When the displacing fluid is miscible with the displaced fluid, the permeabilities are equal and the mobility ratio may be expressed as a ratio of viscosities: u (displacing fluid) u (displaced fluid) The mathematical analysis for calculating the areal sweepout efficiency with mobility ratio other than unity is quite tedious.5,11 An experimental method by using a potentiometric model2 in a step-wise manner and in using an X-ray shadowgraph model3,12 with continuous fluid flow has been published. Several types of models have been used to study oil and gas reservoir performance. These models may be classified as physical, electrolytic, potentiometric, X-ray shadowgraph, and fluid mapper. The X-ray shadowgraph and fluid mapper are models relatively new to petroleum engineering and have not been used extensively for specific applications. The theory of the fluid mapper indicates it may be adapted to a study of areal sweepout efficiencies for various mobility ratios as well as other complex problems in petroleum engineering. The use of the model and results obtained when using displacing and displaced fluids of equal densities but different viscosities are discussed. FLUID MAPPER DEVELOPMENT H. S. Hele-ShawV eveloped a fluid mapper model based on the hydrodynamic theory. This theory is that in the steady flow of a viscous fluid between horizontal parallel plates spaced a very small distance apart, the effect of viscous shear is of such magnitude in the vertical plane that the motion in the horizontal plane is practically undisbrted streamline flow. Techniques developed by Hele-Shaw were not expanded and no additional developments in fluid mapper models were forthcoming until A. D. Moore, University of Michigan, published a series of papers starting in 1949, which describe the construction of a flexible and inexpensive model'h nd the fluid mapper technique for the solution of certain problems.' Alexander Forsyth, Southport, Me. (communication to the Secretary): In Mr. Irving's able and interesting paper he describes minutely the appearance of the wolframite and its association with the refractory siliceous gold-ore. He also describes this gold-ore, but fails to mention the important pockets of metallic gold found in the Lead City occurrence of it. I use the term " metallic " in preference to the more usual " free," for it has been found that this gold is not easily amalgamated. Metallic gold is comparatively rare in the refractory siliceous gold-ores of the Black Hills; hence its occurrence in considerable amounts in the Lead City wolframite district deserves notice. I possess a beautiful specimen from the Harrison mine. It is a lump of drusy, granular ore, about 6 in. in diameter. The gold .is " shot" through it in large and small pin-heads; and in two specially oxidized areas, each about 11/2 in. in diameter, it is peppered full. The famous " Grantz strike," made in the Lead City wolframite locality, produced many beautiful gold specimens. This district affords an excellent example of the repeated discovery of new mineral values upon old ground. By reason of its proximity to the Homestake vein, this wolframite deposit was inevitably traversed many times by experienced geologists, mineralogists and mining engineers, who evidently must have thrown aside, with no thought of wolframite, the lumps of " black iron " lying about. I have the admission of an able geologist that, six months before the wolframite was discovered, he visited some of the very mines where it occurred, and passed it by as magnetic iron-ore. MINE fires are always dangerous and are frequently accompanied by loss of life during the period of confusion which is apt to follow their discovery. In metal mines, fires may result from the accidental ignition of some combustible material, or they may be of spontaneous origin resulting from the rapid decomposition of sulphide. They occur frequently enough to demonstrate the need of some special equipment and a general plan for controlling them, in addition to measures for their prevention. Nearly all the large copper mines have had fires, and the methods of fighting them have been well described in recent papers, notably-by C. L. Berrien,1 R.. E. Tally,2 and others in discussion. The Copper Queen mine has many shafts, which are connected by underground workings. The deeper parts are ventilated by fans, but in the shallower portions natural ventilation through numerous connecting raises or shafts is sufficient. There have been several fires in the past few years, of which all are extinguished but one, and that is under control. These notes cover particularly the preparations that are being made-to check a new fire, partially or temporarily, and to facilitate the escape of workmen in the interval before a definite plan of fighting it can be established. A fire may occur in a shaft or station, or in some working father away. In case of fire in an upcast shaft, the gas would escape to the surface and the immediate result would probably not be dangerous to workmen, as they could escape by other shafts. In a downcast shaft, however, the gas would be distributed very rapidly throughout a large portion of the mine, and men might easily be trapped and asphyxiated. A fire in mine workings, drift, raise, or stope, would be dangerous in a degree, but the draft there is likely to be less strong than in a shaft and probably a smaller area would be invaded by the fire gases.
