IN ORDER to comprehend the help and information that may be expected from electrical prospecting, it is necessary to have at least a general knowledge of the methods and principles involved in preparing and interpreting results obtained in the field. Electrical prospecting is rather complicated, both in theory and practice, and in order to make a brief description clear to the practical mining man it has been necessary to idealize and generalize the problems, at the risk of having such simplification criticized by the theoretical man. This simplification must not be misinterpreted as showing a lack of theoretical knowledge. FIG. 1.-FLOW OF CURRENT IN AND AROUND A CONDUCTING BODY. For its operation, electrical prospecting mainly, depends on the fact that most metallic ores conduct an electric current much more readily than barren rocks. If an electric current flows through a block of ground within which a body of chalcopyrite is enclosed in country rock of. schist, the current will find less resistance to its passage through the chalcopyrite than through the schist, even though the passage through the latter be much shorter. This is because the longer path through the chalcopyrite offers less resistance, owing to the superior electrical conductivity of the chalcopyrite (Fig. 1).

The fundamental hydrodynamic principles governing the production of oil from wells have been carefully studied and evaluated by many investigators. These prior studies are quite complete and cover virtually the entire field of oil production and recovery.' One of the most important measurements in production studies is that of the bottom-hole pressure at various rates of production.2 It is the purpose of this paper to outline the technique and economics of fluid-level measurements as applied to pumping wells and to review briefly other methods for obtaining bottom-hole data. The applications of bottom-hole pressure or fluid-level measurements are based on simple hydrodynamic principles. Under equilibrium conditions, pbh = hd + pg + pch [1] when pbk = bottom-hole pressure, Ib. per sq. in. absolute, h = height of fluid in well, ft., d = average fluid density, Ib. per sq. in. per foot, p, = weight of section of gas column 1 in, square from fluid level to casinghead, Pch = casinghead pressure, Ib. per sq. in. absolute. In words, equation 1 states that the bottom-hole pressure is equal to the weight hd of the column of fluid plus the weight of the column of gas between the fluid and the casinghead plus the casinghead pressure. At moderate rates of flow, the rate of production is approximatcly proportional to the difference between the reservoir, or static bottom-hole. pressure and the flowing or producing pressure; i.e.: Q = c(pr - pbh) [2] pr = the reservoir pressure, c = the constant of proportionality. Structural steels containing chromium have become widely used in the last 20 years. In the earlier part of this period the major applications were in chromium-molybdenum aircraft tubing and similar special high-strength steels. During the past 10 years there has been a notable expansion in the use of chromium-bearing steel for structural purposes when welding was utilized for fabrication. The chromium-bearing steels introduced by Saklatwallal (chromium-copper), Kinzel2 (chromium-manganese-silicon), and Schultz3 (chromium-copper) are being extensively used at the present time. General Effects of Chromium Chromium is so widely known for its carbide-forming tendency that its capacity to stabilize oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus is often overlooked. In low-carbon steels of the structural type these so-called secondary characteristics become more prominent. For this reason also, chromium in structural steel is definitely a toughening agent. As the carbon content is increased, the more widely known hardening effect becomes more evident. In low-carbon steels chromium increases the notched-bar impact strength substantially. This property persists at subzero temperatures and is utilized for low-temperature service in chromium-copper steel.4 Chromium also reduces any tendency to strain-aging embrittlement. In addition to improving the toughness of steels with the usual impurities, chromium has the specific property of counteracting the brittleness induced by high phosphorus.5,6 In steels low in carbon and alloys, chromium has an almost negligible effect on tensile strength, and a hardening influence is noticeable only in the stronger steels. The ductility of welds adjacent to the base plate is also improved by chromium, both in the range of foolproof welding steels having strengths of less than 80,000 lb. per sq. in. as well as in the higher strength steels.

The finding of gold, in enriching quantity, along the streams that issued from the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada was the prelude not only to the birth of an organized mining industry in California but to the intensive exploration of the entire Pacific slope; it presaged the feverish exploitation of the mineral resources that the ubiquitous prospector soon uncovered all over our western domain. At first when this migration began, as typified by the rush of 1849, there was no time to examine the signs of ore that were to be detected along the track of adventure, and, it must be added, not many in that motley crowd of gold-seekers were qualified to interpret the signs if they had lingered to look at them. Such intelligent curiosity as a few of them possessed was directed to the finding of gold chiefly, if not exclusively; and their good sense in this respect can not be impugned, because in a new and remote country the less valuable metals and minerals are unlikely to be worth the winning. Many of those that came to California crossed the alkaline wastes and sagebrush prairies that extend between the Great Sal? Lake and the ramparts of the snow-clad Sierra; when coming overland they found it convenient to halt on the eastern slope and to pitch their camp in the valley of the Car- son river before they began the tedious ascent of the mountains and the final entry into the land of gold. One of the trails most used by these immigrants followed the Carson river to the mountain meadows south of Lake Tahoe and then descended among the pine-woods of Placerville, where they went to work with pan and shovel in the gold-bearing streams

(Chattanooga Meeting, October, 1908.) THE immense commercial value of the Gayley dry-blast process has been established beyond controversy. The testimony of practical blast-furnace managers, on both sides of the Atlantic, agrees that it reduces the cost of pig-iron about $1 per ton; but from the same testimony it appears that this direct economy does not by any means cover its commercial advantages-in fact, that under conditions frequently encountered in practice, it presents other benefits of even greater immediate financial importance. To this point I shall recur in a later part of the present paper. The history of the reception given to this invention, especially on the other side of the Atlantic, has repeated an experience familiar to American engineers. First, the reports of our practice were rejected as theoretically impossible, according to generally accepted notions and formulas; then the figures were reluctantly accepted ; and finally the attempt has been made to explain how they could have been obtained. As to the Gayley dry blast, we Americans have been for several years in the last stage of the discussion, and the rest of the professional world is rapidly coming to it. Meanwhile, the remark has been repeatedly made that, whatever Mr. Gayley's process may turn out to be worth, it was not an invention on his part, but simply the energetic and persevering execution of a procedure already proposed by others. This question I wish to discuss first in the present paper. I. WHAT DID MR. GAYLEY INVENT Realizing that this is not the place for detailed argument on an issue of patent law, I shall not undertake to quote and criticise the publications prior to Mr. Gayley's first patents. A new logging method, called induction logging, is described; it measures the conductivity, or resistivity, of the strata traversed by a bore hole. The apparatus, which is briefly described, comprises a coil system coupled with the ground by induction, so that there is no need for direct contact with the mud, or with the formations. For that reason, the method is particularly useful in oil base mud, and it was first applied to that case. A discussion concerning the respective contribution of each region of ground in the vicinity of the coil system is given. Through the concept of a geometrical factor, it is demonstrated that the total signal, which measures the apparent conductivity, is the summation of the partial products — geometrical factor by conductivity — for the different regions of the ground under consideration. It is thus possible to establish, for each type of coil arangement, investigation characteristic as well as departure curves and correction charts for beds of various thicknesses. This should greatly facilitate the quantative interpretation of the field logs, even in cases where such interpretation would have been difficult on electric logs taken with electrodes. It is also shown that focussing combinations of coils can be used, which give, directly on the recorded log, a value close to the true conductivity, even for fairly thin beds, thus eliminating in most cases the need for corrections. These focussing systems also give a sharper definition of the boundaries between successive strain.

Allen, general manager of the mining dept. of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., visited the firm's iron mines on the Mesabi iron range of Minnesota recently. Thomas P. Anderson, mining engineer and geologist, has resigned from the Raw Materials Div. of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission where he was assistant chief of the Denver Exploration Branch. He will enter private practice in Golden, Colo. James E. Atkinson, consulting mining engineer and geologist, left New York for Colombia, S. A., as general manager for Cia Minera Choco-Pacifico, S. A., operating five dredges in gold and platinum on the Pacific coast of Colombia. Russell H. Bennett has been elected a director of Placer Development, Ltd. with head office in Vancouver, B. C., and is also a director of its subsidiary, Canadian Exploration, Ltd., which mines and mills lead, zinc, and tungsten ores at a property near Salmo, B. C.

It has been found that cold work and annealing treatments greatly retard subsequent grain growth and re-crystallization in thoria-dispersed nickel and NiCr. It is suggested that this is due to cavities which form at the particle-matrix interface durilzg cold work. Some of' the cavities formed are stable at elevated temperatures and prevent the mouement of large-angle grain boundaries. The movement of these boundaries at elevated temperatures is known to start recrystal-lization and when they are pinned by voids recrystal-lization is made more difficult. TD Nichro,me had a maximun resistance to recrystallization when the initial structure was coarse-grained and had a low dislocation density. A precipitation reaction occurred between 700° and 1200° F in cold-worked TD Nichrome. It has been shown by Grant and his coworkers1-3 that a large part of the strength of dispersion-hardened materials is a result of the cold-worked structure produced during fabrication. In a comparison of the strength of cold-worked copper with and without an oxide dispersion, Grant4 has demonstrated that there is little difference in strength at room temperature. The function of the dispersion is essentially to maintain the cold-worked structure at higher temperatures than is possible in the base material. The dispersion accomplishes this by making recrystallization more difficult. The mechanism by which this is achieved is discussed in this paper. The fabrication history of the material has been found to greatly influence recrystallization behavior and this aspect is discussed in some detail. I) MATERIAL Three different thoria-dispersed materials were examined. 1) DuPont 2 pet thoria-dispersed nickel (TDNi) in 0.050-in. seeet. Thoria particle size is in the range 100 to 2500A. 2) DuPont 2 pct thoria-dispersed nichrome (20 pet Cr, 80 pct Ni) (TDNiC) in 0.125-, 0.060-, and 0.040-in. sheet. The kinetics of thickening and of lengthening of ?' plates in an Al-3.93 pct Cu alloy in the temperature range 203" to 300" C were determined by means of transmission electron microscopy. The rate of thickening was found to be less than that allowed by volume diffusion control at all temperatures, by amounts which increased with decreasing temperature, in agreement with the predictions of a general theory of precipitate morphology.1 Thickening was treated on the basis of the ledge mechanism. Ledges were deduced to spread across the broad faces of ?' plates at volume dzjrfusion-controlled rates, as anticipated from the disordered structure of their edges. Lengthening of 8' plates, on the other hand, took Place more rapidly than allowed by volume dzjrfusion. This occurred despite clear morPhological evidence of a bmrier to growth at the edges of these plates. It was concluded that the misfit dislocation structure comprising the barrier requires that lengthening take place by a jog mechanism. The tnisfit dislocations, however, also serve as diffusion short circuits, and allow high overall lengthening rates to be achieved. In Part I' it was shown that, within the range of aging temperatures and times studied, the broad faces of 8' plates formed in Al-4 pct Cu are fully coherent with the a, matrix. Virtually .all of the dislocations present in these faces were found to have developed as a result of plastic deformation in the a phase. Such dislocations are thus "intruders", rather than the more usual misfit-compensating variety. The edges of 8' plates were confirmed, by extension of the earlier studies of Mat-suura and Koda,3 to be made up of edge-type misfit dislocations, in sessile orientation with respect to lengthening of the plates. These interfacial structures should cause 8' plates to thicken and to lengthen at rates less than those allowed under the condition of volume diffusion control, such as would be expected if the interphase boundaries had disordered structures.' The narrow width of 8' plates, the reproducible crystallography of their broad faces, and the appearance of these plates in cross section as octagons rather than as circular discs2 provide qualitative support for these deductions. The present study of the rate of thickening and the rate of lengthening of 8' plates was undertaken in order to examine them on a quantitative basis. I) THICKENING KINETICS OF THE BROAD FACES OF?' PLATES A) Literature Review. The measurements now available on the thickening kinetics of single-phase precipitate plates consist of one plot of the thickening of a proeutectoid ferrite plate in an Fe-C alloy,' showing (as predicted) thickening rates less than those allowed by volume diffusion control. B) Experimental Procedure. Details of the preparation of the 4-3.93 pct Cu alloy used in this study have been previously reported.4 As in Part 1,' transmission electron microscopy was the observational tool employed. A general description of the apparatus and procedures of the electron microscopy studies is given in Section I of Part I. In thin foils, 0' plates tend to form at and parallel to the foil surface.' A direct investigation of the thickening process by means of hot-stage transmission electron microscopy was therefore not feasible. It was thus necessary to use the conventional method of aging individual bulk specimens for a wide range of different times at the various temperatures studied. In each specimen, the thicknesses of a number of plates were measured. Since thin foils prepared from "bulk-aged" material contain a large proportion of grains with orientations near (001) , it was relatively easy to find, near the edges of the foils, the characteristic multifold patterns of intersecting extinction contours which indicate regions where the foil is exactly at an (001) orientation. The thicknesses of large numbers of plates were measured along the (200) branches of the "stars" so that the 8' plates were precisely parallel to the optical axis of the microscope. Wherever possible, intersecting extinction contours were adjusted with the parameter s > 0 to improve the visibility of the plates in bright-field illumination. These precautions, in combination with taking the measurements at the thinnest parts of the foils, minimized the errors in the measurement of the thickness of the plates resulting from inexact parallelism to the electron beam. Since the plates were very thin, it was not easy to measure their thickness on the photographs. The techniques of enlargement and of microdensitometry were employed to minimize errors from this part of the measurement. A further source of possible error, that the plates can appear thicker because of contrast associated with mismatch normal to the plane of the plate, was also considered. The images of the plates were usually thinner than those of dislocations, however, and no anomalous changes in apparent plate thickness were observed when regions of foil containing plates were tilted through various diffracting conditions. Any error from this cause must therefore be small. Other sources contributing errors were: a) the microdensitometer traces per se and the subjective estimates of their peak limits, and b) slight fluctuations in magnification associated with small changes in the current of the objective lens of the electron microscope. The overall error probably amounted to no more than 5 to 10 pct. In order to obtain readily interpretable data on thickening kinetics, it is essential that the diffusion fields of adjacent ?' plates not be allowed to overlap. Production control in the petroleum industry may be discussed under three general heads: engineering, legal, and economic. Though the problems that fall under the respective heads of engineering, law, and economics are separate, they are dependent and interrelated. The present study will deal with the economic phases of production control and only incidentally with the legal phases as they affect the economics of the problem. No one of these forms of control is more important than the others. The engineers have performed their service well, and although there are many problems of engineering control yet to be solved, they are not pressing. Legal control is a problem for the legislatures and the courts to solve. The petroleum industry is such a comparatively young industry and the legal problems are of such recent origin that the courts have not yet been called on to settle all the issues and the legislatures still have before them bills concerned with the regulation of the industry. Economic control of production in the petroleum industry is a highly desirable goal but it has not yet been completely achieved. Since the first commercial well was drilled in 1859, there have been recurring periods of overproduction. (Over- production will be used here to describe a condition wherein so much crude oil is available that a satisfactory and reasonable price is not received for the product.) The kinetics of crack propagation in a hydrogenated high-strength steel at subzero temperatures indicated that cracking progressed in a discontinuous fashion. The delayed failure process thus involves a series of crack initiations rather than the continuous growth of a single crack. The incubation time required for the initiation of delayed failure was controlled by the diffusion of hydrogen. The activation energy for the process was 9120 cal per g-alom. As the test temperature was lowered the incubation time constituted a greater percentage of the total tinze to fracture, and al -50°F the incubation and fracture times were essentially coincident resulting in instantaneous, catastroplzic fracture. A unique feature of hydrogen embrittlement is the delayed failure process in which the material fails under the action of a sustained load even though it is capable of supporting a higher load for a finite period of time.')' Delayed failure of steel and titanium is characterized by an incubation time, preceding the initiation of a crack in a highly localized region, and the subsequent growth of the crack to ultimate failure.3-5 The kinetics of crack growth in hydro-genated high-strength steels have been studied through the use of resistance measurements and have an important bearing on the mechanism of delayed failure. Delayed failure is believed to be merely a facet of hydrogen embrittlement in which sufficient time is allowed during a test for hydrogen diffusion. The current theories employed to explain hydrogen em-brittlement can be grouped into two types. one6-8 explains the embrittlement on the basis of the pressure exerted by molecular hdrogen in lattice voids or defects while the other9-10 attributes the embrittlement to the influence of hydrogen in the lattice. The mechanism used to explain the nature of the crack kinetics in delayed failure is based on the stress-induced diffusion of hydrogen to the area of maximum triaxiality.3 When the hydrogen concentration in this region reaches a critical value, a crack is nucleated. This initial crack propagates instantaneously until stopped by the higher fracture stress of the adjacent material of lower hydrogen content. The continuation of cracking must then await the further diffusion of hydrogen to the new region of triaxiality near the base of the crack where another initiation will occur. From this mechanism it follows that crack propagation is nothing more or less than a series of initiations with limited fracture. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the kinetics of crack growth in an effort to determine whether or not the process was discontinuous. Studies of crack propagation were conducted at low temperatures to retard the diffusion of hydrogen which is presumed to be the rate controlling process in delayed failure. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation—A commercial heat of air-craft quality SAE-AISI 4340 steel, designated as Heat G, was furnished by the Republic Steel Co. in the form of %-in. hot-rolled bars. The material had the following chemical analysis: Composition of 4340 Steel—G Heat C Mn Si Ni Cr Mo 0,395pct 0.82pct 0.29pct 1.76pct 0.85pct 0.25pct Notched tensile specimens with less than a 0.001 in. radius, Fig. 1, were used throughout the investigation. The specimens were heat treated to a 230,000 psi strength level according to the following sequence: a) Normalize bar stock at 1650°F for 1 hr, b) Stress relieve at 1200°F for 4 hr and furnace cool,

THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd.: (1) The Sullivan Concentrator, Chapman Camp, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the, St. Eugene Concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the. Tadanac (Customs) Concentrator,Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Values in all ores treated are as minerals of some or all of the metals -lead, zinc, gold or silver. Occasional customs ores contain small amounts of copper. Gangue minerals vary considerably. A few customs ores are somewhat oxidized and as a result present difficulties. Flotation equipment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sullivan Concentrator. In this paper I will not detail treatment nor equipment in any of our plants but will describe special features in, or in connection with, all of them. I will then deal with flotation reagents, describing our use of each of them, particularly where differing from general practice. I will conclude with comments on special subjects related to differential-flotation.

Tats paper deals with work that has been carried on for over three years by the management and staff of the North Butte Mining Co. in an effort to standardize mining methods, to eliminate lost motion in the operating organization, and to improve the efficiency of the individual workman. Naturally, much of this work is an adaptation of ideas suggested by other mining operations or by practice in manufacturing and other productive industries. The studies, however, have developed some features that it is believed are new. Both new and adapted features are given in detail. The normal capacity of the North Butte mines is about 2000 tons per. day. Hoisting is done principally through the Granite Mountain shaft, which is 3740 ft. (1140 m.) deep and equipped with an electric hoist capable of hoisting 200 tons per hour from a depth of 4000 ft. (1219 m.). The lowest stoping level is the 3400-ft. The Granite Mountain shaft is connected with the Speculator shaft, about 850 ft. (259 m.) south, and with the Gem, about 1150 ft. (350 m.) east, which are 3000 (914.4 m.) and 2000 ft. (609.6 m.). deep, respectively. These two shafts are equipped with reversible fans for ventilation. The Speculator has a; steam hoist with a capacity of 150 tons per hour from the 3000-ft. level. The Granite Mountain shaft is concrete lined from the 1600-ft. to below the 3000-ft. level and gunited with cement from the 1600-ft. level to the surface. Sections of the Speculator shaft with a total combined length of 500 ft. (152.4 m.) are also concreted. There are approximately 36 miles (58 km.) of drifts and crosscuts in the mine, in which there are 15.2 miles (24.5 km.) of track. At normal capacity, about 75 stoping faces, 20 raises, and 30 sill development faces are working. Stoping is usually by the standard square-set method. Where the size of the oreshoot and character of. the walls permit, the rill (or cut-and-fill) system is employed.

IF the tendency toward extending the scope of the workmen's compensation system to include life, health, accident, old age, and unemployment insurance for workers is not promptly altered, I believe there will be a complete breakdown of that system. This is not because of any objections, there may he to requiring industries to provide these additional forms of protection in whole or in part to their employees. It is rather because our workmen's compensation laws, their scale of benefits, and the administrative procedure under them are not adapted or suited to such situations. If the compensation principle is limited to its own proper sphere and is not enlarged so as to include all the ills that the flesh is heir to, it is practical, "workable, and beneficent. If it invades foreign realms, it is bound to grow into a veritable Frankenstein' which will harm principally those it 'is supposed to aid, and, at the same time, will promote waste, fraud, and Industrial demoralization. Compensation risks will become almost uninsurable; the cost to business will be intolerable; and the development of sound relief measures which will give to labor the protection now sought by the uneconomic device of enlarging the compensation law territory will be retarded.

About three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. † This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some comments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. For details of the fractional method, see the paper by L. Reeve1. Degassing the Crucible One of the sources of error in vacuum-fusion methods has been the blank gases evolved from the graphite crucible after preliminary out-gassing. We have used 1750" C. as the outgassing temperature. This gives a base pressure at that temperature of less than 0.030 mm. after one hour and of 0.004 mm. on dropping the temperature to 1575" C. At lower extraction temperatures the base pressure is 0.001 mm. at 1050" C., 0.002 mm. at 1170" and 0.003 mm. at 1320' C. Because of the size of our induction coil we are limited to this temperature, although it 'would be advantageous to use 1950" to 2000" C. Hamilton2, after outgassing at 1850" C. for 100 min., was able to reach a base pressure of 0.001 mm. for a temperature of 1700' to 1725" C. This would give a blank corresponding to less than 0.00015 per cent 02 and 0.00005 per cent H2. Chipman and Marshall outgas at 2000" C. for one hour by using a special construction

THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. had an orebody at Miami, Ariz., of close to 100,000,000 tons of low-grade copper ore, and the method of mining this ore most profitably was of great importance. The selection of a method was practically limited to a "top-slicing," a "shrinkage-stope" or a "caving" method. The "top-slicing" method would give a high extraction of the developed ore, at a high mining cost, and the ?shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods ) a lower extraction of, the developed ore, at a lower mining cost. ORE-DRAWING TESTS To decide on the method to be used it was necessary to know about what extraction of the ore could be obtained by the "shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods. As no definite information regarding the question was available at the time, C. E. Mills, the general manager, thought that some information could be obtained by experimenting in drawing ore, covered with capping, from an experimental box. Some work had already been done along these lines by W. C. Browning for the Inspiration Copper Co. and by myself for the Live Oak Development Co. The idea was to represent as nearly as possible, in the experimental box, the conditions within an area of caved stopes of caved ore all ready for drawing. That is, the area was supposed to represent a semibroken mass with the capping above it in the same condition and ready to follow the ore downward as it was drawn out of the chutes under the ore. To represent the above condition, in the experimental box, crushed ore from the mine was placed in it to a given height, and red barren capping from the mine was placed on top of the ore.

THIS paper gives a preliminary summary of results of tests on the resistance to fatigue under reversed stresses of steel subjected to cold-working and of tests to determine the effect of rest on the endurance of steel under reversed stresses. The tests of cold-worked steel were undertaken as part of an investigation by the National Research Council Committee on Fatigue Phenomena of Metals and were made by Mr. Moore; the tests to determine the effect of rest are part of an investigation now being made by Mr. Putnam. Both series of tests were made in the Materials Testing Laboratory of the University of Illinois. The preliminary results of these tests are reported now because it is believed that test data on fatigue strength should be available at the earliest possible moment; however, it should be clearly kept in mind that this paper gives preliminary results and is intended to encourage discussion rather than to give final conclusions. Before giving the data of the tests, the writers will explain the term "fatigue strength" as used in this paper and will discuss briefly the method used in interpreting the test data of repeated-stress tests. " The term fatigue strength, as applied to a material, may be defined as that maximum fiber stress that will cause fracture of the material after the repetition of any given number of cycles of stress, each cycle involving the variation of stress from a minimum to the above maximum. The fatigue strength, then, varies with the number, of repetitions occurr,ing in the lifetime of a structural or machine member and with the range of stress for each cycle of stress. The fatigue strength will be lower for a member in which the stress is completely reversed than for one in which the stress varies from zero to a maximum. In interpreting test data from fatigue tests under reversed stress, the stresses and corresponding numbers of repetitions required for failure are plotted on logarithmic cross-section paper.
