Nearly 75 per cent of the total coke production in the United States in 1940 was consumed in blast furnaces. In 1939 the percentage was 69.9, and in 1938 it was 61.3. To produce a net ton of pig iron 1757 lb. of coke was required in 1940 and 1760 lb. in 1939. These figures indicate how dependent the production of pig iron is upon the production of coke. The rate of iron production is in some measure influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the coke. Blast-furnace operators believe that the physical properties of coke profoundly influence the operation of the furnace. Although it is true that coke of a wide variety of physical properties is used in American blast furnaces, the periodic fluctuation of these properties is one of the causes of irregularity of blast-furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to present a broad picture of the physical properties of by-product coke that are generally considered to be important by coke-oven and blast-furnace operators. Effects of the kind of coal used, the preparation of the coal, the rate of coking, and other factors will be considered. Of all these variables, the kind of coal used is by far the most important. In this discussion use will be made of the method of coal classification by rank' standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. Although this method of classification has been an American stand¬ard for several years, it has not been given the attention it deserves, especially in connection with the selection of coal for production of coke. Despite the fact that many producers of blast-furnace coke are limited to some particular source or sources of coal, a good understanding of the principles involved in setting up the standard method of classification may lead to a better appreciation of the causes of changes in coke characteristics. Furthermore, where it is necessary to select new coals as a substitute for the original supply, this method of classification can be of great assistance. The data presented have been gathered from many sources, but no attempt has been made to cover the vast literature. Instead, some of the more important data have been selected to show how coals and their carbonization affect some of the physical properties of coke. It must be emphasized that generalizations concerning the behavior of coking coals are presented and that individual coals may vary widely from the specific behavior depicted. Nevertheless, it is believed that the data illustrate certain typical behaviors. Neither was it possible to cover completely all the factors involved; for example, the macroscopic constituents of coal are believed to have important effects on the physical properties of coke, but since there is little information available for such study, and since vitrain, clarain, and durain are neither

FactoRs entering into the market value of coal are its grade, and the cost of labor, material, and capital. Reduction in these costs cannot be expected in the future, and it therefore follows that greater economy in their use must be accomplished if it is desired to hold the present markets; more tons of product per unit must be obtained in a given time from both men and material, and means devised for increasing the percentage of lump and domestic sizes. This paper is presented for the purpose of inviting discussion and stimulating thought in regard to the influence of methods of procedure and plans of mining, upon the quality of coal, the economical use of labor, material, and capital, and the cost of production. Even the better methods of the present day leave much to be desired, and a review of the reasons and necessities for their use may be of value in pointing the way to more economical mining. The writer does not attempt to discuss untried methods of mining, but rather to state clearly and concisely a summary of the results obtained under the several methods of procedure that have been adopted. In some instances a high degree of concentration has been effected, and comparisons of the results obtained with the results of lesser degrees of concentration form an interesting study. It is believed that much may be accomplished in improving the quality, and in the more economical use of labor, material, and capital, by concentration, and it is to concentration in particular that your study is invited. The writer, who has occasion to visit many mines, most of which are under different management, has been inclined to the opinion that improvement has been retarded in many ways and that mining has not as yet been entirely freed from the early-day practices which were forced upon it. Practices resulting in lack of concentration, to which reference will be made, are: The absence of robbing, necessitating the frequent interposition of barrier pillars; lack of system and of proper supervision, resulting in losses of life and coal. The stresses which initiate deformation processes in metals are fundamentally important in the study of the mechanical properties of metals. A point of inflection in the load-elongation curves obtained for single crystals' has been rather too readily interpreted as a true yield point, and the critical resolved shearing stress on the plane of slip taken as a material constant. Even early work showed that the stress at this point varies with rate of loading, but it has not been generally appreciated that creep tests under static loads alone are suited for determining the existence or nonexistence of a yield point.* It has now been shown by Miller that single crystals of zinc3 when loaded statically begin to yield at loads too small to measure; as a result there is no case now known, apart from that cited in the present paper, in which a true critical stress for yielding has been demonstrated for single crystals of metals. The case of iron has especial interest: the existence of an upper and lower yield point and of an elongation at the yield point in ordinary iron and steel marks this substance as unusual, though the effects have been found to a very minor degree in other metals and alloys. $ Most alloys do not show such marked phenomena when appreciable yielding begins, and accordingly modern practice is to speak of the yield strength of such materials, a stress read from the load-elongation curve after elongation has begun, rather than yield point. The special behavior of iron suggests that it is more likely that single crystals of iron should have a true yield point than other metals. The temperature dependence of the rate of grain boundary migration was measured in bicrystals of zone-refined lead containing from 20 to less than 1 ppm by wezght of tin. The apparent activation energy in the temperature range from 320" to 200oC is markedly dependent upon the solute tin concentration and upon the orientation relationship of the grains adjacent to the grain boundavy. The quantitative experimental observat~ons are compared with the predictions of various theories of grain boundary migration. In previous work.&apos;?&apos; the mobility of individual grain boundaries was studied as a function of impurity concentration and type of boundary. Grain boundary migration occurred at the expense of dislocation arrays which were introduced into the specimen during solidification. Boundary mobility in zone-refined lead at 300°C was markedly decreased by small additions of tin. 0.004 wt pct being sufficient to decrease the rate of grain boundary migration by a factor of 1000. The mobility of grain boundaries having polar orientation relationships near 38 and 22 deg about <Ill>, and 28 deg about <100>, was much less sensitive to tin concentration in the range studied. As a result, these boundaries have relatively high mobilities. The present paper is a continuation of the above study. Data are now presented on the temperature dependence of the motion of individual grain boundaries in zone-refined lead as a function of solute tin concentration and orientation relationship of adjacent grains at the grain boundary. The experimental observations are compared with the predictions of a number of theories of grain boundary migration3-8 which, prior to the present experimental investigation, could not be critically evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The striation or lineage structure of melt-grown single crystals of zone-refined lead, containing various additions of tin, was utilized to provide a driving force for grain boundary migration, as previously described.1,2 Each grain boundary under study separated the striated single crystal from another grain which was introduced by localized plastic deformation and recrystallization of a small region of the sample. The speed of migration of grain boundaries in dilute alloys of tin in zone-refined lead was investigated as a function of 1) tin concentration from < 0.0001 to 0.002 wt pct, 2) temperature in the range of 200" to 320°C, and 3) orientation relationship of the adjacent grains at the grain boundary. The substructure driving energy available for grain boundary migration was estimated to be about 4000 ergs per cu cm, within a factor of two, from specimen to specimen.&apos; The specimen dimensions, and growth and alloying procedures for the preparation of striated single crystals of lead of known tin composition, were as described previously.&apos; Each bicrystal was carefully wrapped in aluminum foil, and annealed in a well-stirred salt bath consisting of 50 pct NaNO2 and 50 pct KNO3, for known periods of time at a series of constant temperatures (*2°C). The grain boundary positions, before and after each anneal, were determined by etching lightly in a solution of 5 pct nitric acid in methyl alcohol, in order to follow the motion of the boundary and determine its rate of migration. Thus, the rate of motion of the grain boundary in a single specimen was measured at various temperatures. The above procedure was carried out for each grain boundary in seventeen different bicrystal specimens.

It has been estimated that the value of the mineral products of the United States is about $2,000,000,000 a year; that about $25,000,000 is expended annually for explosives and that about double this sum is paid in wages where blasting is done. The value of the mineral products does not adequately express the importance of the industry involved in the excavation of rock and ore because of the enormous sums of money expended in tunnel driving, in quarries, and in open-cut excavation generally. We know that the Catskill Aqueduct in the neighborhood of New York, which is now nearing completion, has cost some $165,000,000 and that about one-third of this may be rated as rock excavation. These illustrations are given in order to call attention to the great importance of an industry the extension and development of which in our industrial life depend so much upon the economics of rock drilling. Reference has been made to the new Catskill Aqueduct. There are three aqueducts leading into New York, each built at periods separated by some 20 years of time. The first one, known as the Old Aqueduct, conveys the waters of the Croton river to New York City in a manner which reminds one of the old Roman aqueducts, the ruins of which are still in evidence. The engineers who laid out these old conduits sought to direct their lines around the hills and into the valleys, at all times avoiding the rock. When it was necessary to cross a river or a deep ravine, a bridge or causeway was constructed. High Bridge, over the Harlem river, is an arched masonry viaduct differing in no essential features from the aqueducts of the Romans. When the second Croton Aqueduct was built, about the year 1890, the art of drilling rock had been so far perfected, and the use of explosives, through the invention of dynamite, had become so general, that this waterway was planned and executed on straight lines, following rather than avoiding the rock. The second Croton Aqueduct is a tunnel through rock, about 32 miles in length; material gneiss, almost as hard as granite. Its construction was made practicable by sinking

A new method for obtaining equilibrium vaporization ratios (K-values) for reservoir fluids has been developed and tested. By application of the method, complex experimental measurements of liquid and vapor phase compositions are eliminated. This simplified technique reduces the cost of experimental equilibrium-ratio data for reservoir studies of condensates and volatile crude-oil systems. The method is designed for systems of constant composition and, therefore, is best suited for depletion studies where compositional changes at high pressures are minor. The basic data required, in addition to the composition of the initial reservoir fluid, are the relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities at reservoir temperature and variom reservoir pressures. Tests demonstrated that the method predicts equilibrium ratios accurately for condensates. A single test on a crude oil was not conclusive; further testing will be necessary before the accuracy of the method can be determined for crude-oil systems. In addition to determining equilibrium ratios, the calculation method provides information on the physical properties of the "plus" component in the vapor and liquid phases. The "plus" component is that mixture of components heavier than the least volatile fraction analyzed. This information is useful in studies of both natural depletion and cycling operations for condensate reservoirs where the heptanes-plus component in the gas phase is produced from the reservoir. INTRODUCTION As more volatile oil and condensate reservoirs are found, the use of phase behavior techniques to predict their performance is increasing in importance. These techniques have long been used for condensate fields and have more recently been applied to crude-oil fields containing oils of medium-to-high volatility. In these phase behavior methods, equilibrium ratios (K-values) are used to predict compositional changes in the reservoir fluids—thereby accounting for the recoverable oil that exists in the gas phase. The reliability of the predictions depends to a large extent on the equilibrium ratios used. These values must be obtained for each component for the entire pressure range being investigated. Unfortunately, because of the complex nature of hydrocarbon mixtures, accurate K-values are hard to obtain. The equilibrium ratios for a particular component will vary not only with the temperature and pressure, but also with over-all composition of the system. The importance of composition is quite critical at elevated pressures, but becomes negligible at pressures below about 300 psia. Therefore, because most phase behavior problems involve the high-pressure region, each fluid system becomes a special case. Experimental programs to determine characteristic K-values are quite difficult and time-consuming. Thus, it is often necessary to resort to approximations of the K-value data. Charts giving K-values for various mixtures and classes of mixtures are available in the literature. However, there are two major difficulties in using them: (1) the K-values of the "plus" component (that mixture of components heavier than the last one analyzed) must be obtained by extrapolation from the K-values of the other components; and (2) the K-values obtained must finally be adjusted by trial and error to agree with observed volumetric data. To eliminate these difficulties, a new method of determining equilibrium ratios was developed. Briefly, after the composition of the system as a whole has been analyzed, the method uses empirical correlations and the gross fluid properties of the system (relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities) to calculate K-values. Because the calculative procedure is long, it is best solved on a digital computer. About one hour of machine time on an IBM 650 computer is required to develop a K-chart for the fluid being examined. DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD OF OBTAINING K-VALUES Equilibrium ratios are defined as the ratio of the mole fraction of a component in the vapor phase to its mole fraction in the liquid phase. This statement is expressed in Eq. 1. A typical plot of equilibrium ratios for a particular system is shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that, at pressures near the saturation pressure, the K-values appear to converge to a common point. This apparent convergence point is called the convergence pressure and is a characteristic of the system involved. Various empirical correlations of K-values have been noted. The effects of the addition of 0.5 pct ThO2 (by volume) on the grain structure and texture of heavily rolled tungsten sheet were studied. Powder metallurgy ingots were rolled to sheet, 0.001 in. thick, and samples were annealed at temperatures from 1200" to 2500°C. The heating rate to the anneal temperature was varied from 3°C per min to 6500°C per min. The orientations of the largest grains were determined by X-ray diffraction. The disposition and loss of the ThO2 particles were determined by electron transmission microscopy and the activation energy for remozlal of the thorium was measured by mass spec-troscopy. Heating rates below about 800 C per min produced large, highly elongated grains. Higher heating rates produced much smaller, less elongated grains. The grain structure and texture of the slowly heated samples were identical to the structures and textures of heavily rolled tungsten foil conventionally doped with aluminum, silicon, and potassium but the recrystallization temperature was about 200°C lower. There was stringer-like dispersion of larger ThO2, particles superimposed on a uniform dispersion of fine particles. The particles increased in size and decreased in number with time at temperature. The loss of particles was accompanied by formation of grain boundary voids and surface pits. The activation energy for removal of the ThO2 was about 40 kcal per mole. THE addition of small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium to tungsten has a profound effect on the grain structure of heavily rolled sheet1 or drawn wire."4 Thus, "doped" tungsten sheet, rolled to 0.001 in. and recrystallized, develops a structure consisting of large, highly elongated grains of a specific preferred orientation.&apos; It has been shown that the elongated grain structure was caused by a dispersion of particles, identified as mullite (Al6si2O13),1,4 in strings parallel to the rolling direction in sheet or to the wire axis. Identical results were obtained for iron which was doped with glass and rolled to 99 pct reduction of thickness and recrystallized.5 Again, the glass particles were disposed in strings parallel to the rolling direction. The strings retarded boundary migration in the lateral direction but grain growth was able to proceed relatively unhindered along the direction parallel to the strings.1,5 In both the doped tungsten and the glass-doped iron, the particles were highly plastic during the high-temperature deformation. Since mullite melts at about 1800°C and the glass employed melts at about 810ºC, the particles were probably molten during the recrystallization anneals (above 1800°C for the doped tungsten and 850°C for the glass-doped iron). There are indications in the literature that particles not plastic at hot-working temperatures (up to about 1550°C for tungsten) may also impart elongated grain structures by primary recrystallization of worked alloys. Examples are dispersions of tantalum carbide in chromium,6 and ThO2 in nickel where elongation ratios of recrystallization grains of up to 20:l were obtained.7 Strings of ThO2 particles in W-ThO2 wire have been seen by Rieck.8 In view of the available evidence, it was of interest to extend the previous studies of doped tungsten and glass-doped iron to include W-ThO2 sheet materials. Of specific interest was the grain structure, preferred orientation, recrystallization temperature, and disposition of the thoria particles. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Material Preparation. About 380 g of blue tungsten oxide (approximate composition WO3) was wet with a sufficient amount of aqueous solution of Th(N03)4 to provide 0.5 vol pct ThO2. The wet mixture was stirred to distribute the doping material uniformly throughout the powder. Stirring was continued while the mixture was heated until it was completely dry. The dried, doped mixture was then reduced to tungsten powder by heating at 850°C for 2 hr in a stream of dry hydrogen. The doped tungsten powder was hydropressed in a rubber sack at pressures of 50,000 psi to produce an ingot approximately 2 cm diam by about 5 cm long. Next, the pressed cylinder was heated in hydrogen for 2 hr at 1350°C to render it strong enough for machining. The cylinder was machined to a square cross section of 1.6 by 1.6 cm with rounded corners. Finally, the bar was heated for 2 hr at 2150°C in hydrogen to provide a sufficiently dense mate rial to withstand the hot-rolling operation. Prior to rolling, the ingot was reduced in thickness by about 20 pct by forging at 1550°C. This served to increase the density of the material and to widen it slightly for better rolling characteristics. The forged ingot was then rolled at 1550°C to a reduction of 45 pct of thickness, following which the rolling temperature was reduced to 1300°C and the slab rolled, with several reheats, to 0.050 in. Further reduction was accomplished at 800°C in tungsten sheet packs to a total reduction of about 99.85 pct. B) Annealing Treatment and Observation of Structure. Small samples of the rolled foil were annealed in one of two ways. Some of the samples were suspended in a covered tungsten can and annealed at temperatures from 1200" to 2200°C for various times in vacuum of l0-7 to 10-6 mm Hg. IT has been known for a number of years that certain aluminum alloys could be hardened by quenching from a temperature of about 500° C. Immediately after quenching the total increase in hardness is not marked, but the hardness increases gradually so that after about 4 days, it has reached a maximum. The actual increase in hardness probably continues for weeks or even months, but in order to detect the differences after 4 days, it is necessary to make tests at rather long intervals. So far as is known to the authors, Alfred Wilm was the first to discover these properties in aluminum alloys.1 The aluminum-copper alloys are amenable to this treatment and the addition of magnesium makes the heat-treatment effect more pronounced. Until recently heat treatment of aluminum alloys has been confined to the worked alloys in the form of sheet or extruded products. The alloy that has been most used in this connection is known commercially as duralumin and has about the following composition: copper not exceeding, 6 per cent.; magnesium not exceeding, 2 per cent.; manganese not exceeding, 1 per cent.; commercial aluminum,2 balance. A typically good alloy in this range consists of: copper, 4 per cent.; magnesium, 0.5 per cent.; manganese, 1 per cent.; commercial aluminum, balance. This alloy can be rolled into sheets or extruded; and in this condition it can be heated in the ordinary furnace atmosphere to a temperature near 500° C. and quenched in water. After about 4 days it will have the following physical properties: tensile strength 55,000 to 60,000 lb. per sq. in. (3866 to 4218 kg. per sq. cm.); elongation in 2 in., 15 to 20 per cent. No harmful effects of the furnace gases or even the air, if the heating is affected in an electric furnace in an air atmosphere,

THE widespread interest in the alloys of beryllium with copper is due principally to the fact that certain compositions show very favorable precipitation-hardening characteristics and are, in fact, the strongest nonferrous alloys known at the present time. Investigations have been conducted by Masing and Dahl and others on the physical characteristics of ternary beryllium alloys, in an attempt to produce precipitation-hardening effects with a smaller amount of beryllium than that required in the binary copper-beryllium alloys (2.0 to 2.5 per cent Be). The results of these investigations show that ternary alloys of beryllium with Cu-Sn, Cu-Al and Cu-Zn, among others, exhibit promising improvements in physical properties after precipitation-hardening treatment and, while the increases in properties obtained are not as high as those realized from the binary copper-beryllium alloys, excellent properties are obtained with beryllium contents averaging about one-half the amount required in the binary alloys. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the equilibrium relations of certain alloys containing copper, tin and beryllium. The alpha-phase boundary of the ternary system is given for alloys containing from 0 to 1 per cent beryllium. The equilibrium conditions beyond the alpha-phase boundary are presented for alloys containing up to 32 per cent tin and 1 per cent beryllium. The data were collected by means of

Up to the present time, according to Hansenl and Haughton,² the constitution of the bismuth-indium system has not yet been published. The generally accepted value for the melting point of indium, as listed in most scientific journals and textbooks, is 155°C. Recently, however, H. M. Davis3 has determined a new melting point for indium of 157.3²C O.l°C. Since bismuth has been used in preponderance as an alloying element in the majority of low-melting alloys, and indium has been used with considerable success in lowering the melting points of low-melting alloys, 4,6 an interest has been developed in the application of these two metals, making a complete knowledge of the constitution of its alloys desirable. In this investigation, the melting point of indium reported by H. M. Davis has been found to be substantially correct. A value of 157. ²°C ± O.5°C was determined. A platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple of fine wire encased in a thin-walled Pyrex glass tube, about 1/8 in. in diameter, was connected to a type K potentiometer for temperature measurements. The thermocouple was calibrated against the melting points of tin, bismuth, and the silver-copper eutectic and the boiling point of water. Since the temperature readings could be reproduced to 0.²°Cl and the accuracy of the temperature standards in this range is slightly better than 0.5°C, it scems reasonable to assume that the temperature readings are reliable to approximately 0.5°C. The cooling rate could be controlled by varying the amount of insulation surrounding the crucible. Three or four layers of asbestos paper, 1/16 in. thick, sufficed to give a cooling rate of from I° to ²°C per minute. Undercooling was slightly noticeable. This condition was minimized by vigorous stirring, since the advantage of using slower rates was too small to justify the greater expenditure

Up to the present time, according to Hansenl and Haughton,² the constitution of the bismuth-indium system has not yet been published. The generally accepted value for the melting point of indium, as listed in most scientific journals and textbooks, is 155°C. Recently, however, H. M. Davis3 has determined a new melting point for indium of 157.3²C O.l°C. Since bismuth has been used in preponderance as an alloying element in the majority of low-melting alloys, and indium has been used with considerable success in lowering the melting points of low-melting alloys, 4,6 an interest has been developed in the application of these two metals, making a complete knowledge of the constitution of its alloys desirable. In this investigation, the melting point of indium reported by H. M. Davis has been found to be substantially correct. A value of 157. ²°C ± O.5°C was determined. Large-grain specimens of iodide titanium prepared metal-lographically were stain etched using the technique of New York University as modified by Watertown Arsenal Laboratories. Orientations of grains showing an abnormal response to stain etching were determined by back-reflection X-ray techniques. X-ray results showed that a-titanium grains, oriented such that their basal planes were parallel to the polished surface, have a slower reactivity to stain etching than any other orientation. Grains oriented such that their basal planes made small angles with the polished surface exhibited reaction rates between that of the true basal orientation and the normal rate. As the angle with the surface increases the reactivity increases up to a maximum angle of 14 deg. Basal planes making an angle with the surface of greater than 14 deg show normal reactivity to stain etching. These data, plus work on polycrystalline specimens, indicate that the oxidation rate of titanium might be reduced by correct alignment of crystal planes. ThE earliest observed phenomenon in the micrography of titanium was the occurrence of a grains which exhibited no birefringency. Even though a titanium possesses a hexagonal-close-packed structure and should be optically anisotropic, it can appear optically isotropic, when the crystal is so oriented that its intersection with the polished surface is perpendicular to the axis of symmetry. During the develoment of color staining techniques for titanium: it was noted that the a phase did not stain uniformly. Staining of specimens of commercially pure titanium resulted in a micro-structure of blue-colored grains, among which were randomly oriented a few grains exhibiting colors between the initial yellow and the final blue color. Under polarized light, these off-colored grains appeared to be optically isotropic. More intense study with polarized light, however, showed only the yellow grains to be isotropic. The intermediate colored grains exhibited weak birefringency, which at first glance is not detectable due to the strong birefringency of the surrounding structure. Aminoff2 and Straumanis3 have previously shown that in zinc the basal orientation is less reactive than other orientations. Leidheiser4 showed the same thing to be true for the hexagonal-close -packed configuration of cobalt. Thus, it would appear that the basal-plane orientation is responsible for the abnormality in stained titanium. Later work by Leidheiser5 on cobalt has shown that other planes besides the basal plane exhibited reaction rates slower than the normal rate. Reported planes were the (100), the (1011) and several planes making small angles with the basal plane. The last observance appears not to be due to the reactivity of the reported plane but due to the reactivity of the basal plane which is very close to being parallel to the surface. There are, then, two possible explanations for the range of colors observed in stain-etched a titanium. Since extensive research on the effect of orientation on surface reaction has failed to provide any definite trend, these two explanations are not adequate in themselves. Planes showing the retarded reactivity differ not only for different crystal structures but for metals of the same crystal structure and even for different reactions of the same metal. Tragert,6 Leidheiser,7 Tammann,6 and wagner9 have shown copper to exhibit retarded reactivity on the (111) plane. However, Leidheiser10 has shown that under other conditions the retarded reactivity of copper is associated with the (100)

A brief review of today&apos;s processing of integvated circuits is given. The major trends in the development of advanced integvated electronics are identified as 1) the broadening of the integvated circuit concept to a large class of circuit function, 2) the processing of more complex circuits within relatively small chips of silicon, and 3) the processing of very large electronic functions on complete slices of silicon. This latter trend, called array technology, is then developed in detail. Emphasis is given to defining the key tech-nological problems. Current progress being made is illustrated. THIS paper will endeavor to identify the major trends in advanced integrated electronics technology. One of these, array technology, will be developed in some detail. The array technology discussion will identify the key problem areas. Since it is the scope of the entire meeting&apos; to present specific progress in the science and technology of integrated electronics, we shall indicate general directions being explored rather than discuss comprehensively solutions to the problems. In order to set the stage for the discussion of future trends in integrated-electronics technology, let us briefly compare the processes by which circuits are fabricated through discrete-device technology with that of integrated circuits technology. The reader is referred to the December 1964 issue of Proceedings of IEEE2 for a comprehensive review of integrated electronics. The article3 by Jay Lathrop is an excellent discussion of integrated-circuits technology. A discussion of the history of semiconductor technology is contained in Ref. 4. A) Current Status of Integrated Electronics. Fig. 1 (top) shows the process by which circuits are constructed from discrete devices. Key points are: 1) Slices containing large numbers of transistors or diodes are processed separately. 2) The slices are scribed into small chips (on the order of 15 mils on a side is about as small as can be conveniently handled) each chip containing one transistor. 3) Each device is specified separately—circuit -function specs are derived largely from device specs. 4) Circuits are formed by connecting together the discrete devices. 5) The number of circuit connections required is approximately equal to the number of devices. 6) There are potentially many more discrete devices per inch2 of semiconductor—only our lack of ability to handle them in discrete form prevents us from going to several orders of magnitude higher density iin Fig. 1, 400,000 transistors are discussed at 1.5 mils on a side). The bottom part of Fig. 1 illustrates the integrated circuit process. Key points are: 1) On the same slice of silicon, transistors, diodes, and resistors are processed grouped to do a complete circuit function. 2) While still in slice form, the components are interconnected into circuit functions by an evaporation process, eliminating the need for separate interconnection steps later. Dramatic improvements in cost and reliability are realized. With a simple flash of metalization thousands of interconnections are reliably made. 3) The slices are scribed into chips which contain complete circuit functions. 4) The circuit functions are specified-not each component in the circuit. This important point was missed by some of the early opponents to integrated circuitry. They argued that, with device yields at x pct, integrated circuit yields would be pct, where n is the required number of devices to make a circuit. This argument leads to extremely low yields for integrated circuits. The fallacy of the argument is that in integrated circuits each device is not specified separately. Furthermore, since a device is forever integrated into a specific circuit function, it need meet only the requirements for that particular function. Discrete devices, on the other hand, are tightly specified so that they can be applied to a variety of circuit functions. 5) Extremely high packing densities are achievable because one need only make the basic devices as large as the circuit demands. Their size is not dictated by handling requirements. A current example

The theory of reliability is a powerful mathematical tool for determining optimum selection of components and application of electrical power to coal mines. In order to make this tool useful, statistical material on equipment life must be gathered and all failures carefully recorded. Statistical data can be applied to new apparatus design and can be used to determine optimum configuration of network and maintenance to reduce costs. Reference is made to underground power systems in the USSR. Technical progress in the last few years has occurred in the design and application of highly productive coal mining and transporting machinery. One of the most important problems facing mining engineers is to increase the availability of the machine to obtain higher productivity. However, machine failures and breakdowns of electrical power supply components cause serious delays in the coal-winning processes. In spite of the fact that electrical equipment and the power supply contribute only a small percentage of direct mine costs, electrical failures as well as power supply delays can result in severe indirect losses. It is necessary, therefore, to consider reliability and safety in the application of electrical equipment underground. To obtain the best results, it is necessary to investigate and evaluate the reliability of the electrical mining components (starters, breakers, motors, cables, etc.) and optimal methods for minimizing maintenance, the desired result being equipment which is efficient and safe. Electrical equipment reliability directly influences economics: the lower the reliability the more frequently failures occur, causing serious working delays and possibly huge economic losses. By the same token, while increasing the number of preventive maintenance calls per unit time might result in fewer failures, thus reducing delays, the cost of making more frequent maintenance inspections will increase; this is one aspect to be discussed in detail. Obviously, failures of identical types of electrical equipment (starters with the same current and voltage, etc.) are influenced variably by different working conditions, environments, quality of the apparatus, maintenance procedures (personnel, frequency, quality), load, and other factors. Hence, the lifetime of identical types of equipment will vary depending upon usage in terms of the foregoing factors. Thus for a given type of electrical component, these factors must be considered quantitatively; the interaction of all these factors are evaluated quantitatively by a statistical method using probability theory. Equipment reliability must be quantitatively determined from a study of equipment life, since no one laboratory test can reproduce all working conditions and environmental effects. Nevertheless, reliability theory applied to electrical mining equipment is a very powerful mathematical tool for selecting as well as evaluating certain parameters. It is necessary to select several reliability parameters so that one can obtain an expression for the total overall economic situation in terms of cost, taking into consideration damage caused by electrical equipment failure and cost of maintenance. To accomplish this result, such characteristics as apparatus lifetime, breakdown idle time, and losses (damages) can be determined quantitatively on a statistical basis. For identical electrical equipment working under similar conditions, the previously mentioned reliability factors are random variables and therefore can be characterized readily by a probability density function. Investigations carried out by the authors in the Kuznetsk Basin (Kuzbas) in West Siberia, USSR, show that the reliability factors of electrical mining equipment are well described by the exponential, normal, or Erlang&apos;s distribution in most cases. THE phenomenon of air-hardening is well known in connection with special steels. It occurs when the rate of decomposition of austenite to marten- site is so retarded that it takes place on free cooling in air rather than on more rapid cooling in a quenching bath. If an air-hardening steel is quenched sufficiently rapidly it will remain in the soft austenitic state, while if it is cooled very slowly it will again become soft owing to growth of the carbide particles. It depends on a critical adjustment of the decomposition velocity and diffusion rate, and such alloys are rather rare, especially in the non-ferrous field. In carrying out some experiments on some copper- rich copper-cobalt alloys, the author found that these possess very marked air-hardening properties. The alloys are covered by a patent issued to M. G. Corson (1,723,022-1919), which states that an alloy containing between 2 and 5 per cent cobalt is hardened by simple quenching from above 850° C.

The fundamental reasons underlying the choicc of a method of mining a coal seam are safety of operation, cheapness of producing the coal and the character of the product as a saleable article. From the standpoint of safety, open or strip coal mining is always preferable, as many of the dangers inherent to underground work are absent, such as explosions of gas and dust, falls of roof and coal, and also to a great extent those due to haulage and the use of explosives, thus eliminating three of the chief causes of accident from which about 75 per cent. of the underground accidents in coal mines occur. The conditions under which coal is stripped also make the work much safer than ordinary quarry work, as the depth of the pit is usually comparatively small. Prom the standpoint of low mining cost, there is much misapprehension and many of the costs given are misleading in that they do not take into account such items as the destruction of the surface for future use, the full cost of the removal of the overburden, depreciation, amortization, coal depletion, loss of time through floods and from bad weather in winter, etc. Coal is no doubt often put on the cars at less cost by stripping than by underground mining, but by no means always so, as is too generally assumed. In some cases coal must be obtained by stripping or not at all, because the small amount of overburden renders underground mining impossible.
