The relations between micros tructures and critical current density in transverse magnetic field were experimentally investigated due to each transformation of the 0 to 0' + P" phases at 700' C for superconductmainly examined using replication electron microscopy. The ß' or a precipitates were found to pin down magnetic flux lines in these alloys. The effects of precipitation upon the critical current density were discussed in relation with the size, spacing, and characler of these precipitates. HIGH magnetic field superconductors, such as Nb-Zr, Nb-Ti, and Nb-Zr-Ti alloys, have been recently put to extensive practical use as winding materials for superconducting magnets.13 The critical current density of these hard superconductors under an applied magnetic field is an important characteristic for magnet materials and is very sensitive to metallurgical structure. It is generally known that the critical current density is increased by introducing dislocations and precipitates into a superconductor; that is, dislocations and precipitates are presumed to be barriers that hinder quantized flux lines from moving.4'5 Theoretical6'7 and experimental analyses of the motion of flux lines and the interaction between flux lines and various defects have already been reported by many authors. Metallographic analysis of high magnetic field superconductors such as Nb-Zr and Nb-Ti is difficult, so that no quantitative relationship between microstruc-ture and critical current density has been established yet. In this paper, the effect of precipitation on the critical current density in magnetic field was investigated for two superconducting alloys, Nb-40Zr-10Ti and Nb-5Zr-60Ti. In these alloys the resistive critical field H, at 4.2oK was about 100 kG and the critical current density Jc at 80 kG was of the order of 104 amp per sq cm.13-l5 The superconducting properties were examined in relation to the microstructural changes due to transformation of i) the ß to ß' + ß" phases at 700°C for Nb-40Zr-10Ti alloy and ii) the ß to a + ß phases at 500°C for Nb-5Zr-6OTi alloy. The effect of size, spacing, and character of precipitates on flux line pinning was in particular examined. The microstructures were studied by means of residual resistivity, microhardness, and tensile strength measurements as well as by X-ray diffraction, optical, and replication electron microscopies. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pure niobium, zirconium, and titanium, in the form of rods 0.8 cm in diam, served as raw materials. Results of chemical analyses of these rods are given in Table I. Ingots of the alloys, 0.4 cm in diam and 3 cm in length, were prepared by means of levitation melting, utilizing a copper mold in an argon-gas atmosphere. Samples from the ingot then were cold-worked by grooved mill to 0.2 cm in diam, heat-treated homogeneously (in the ß phase region) for 5 hr at 1100° in a vacuum of 1 x 106 Torr, and finally cold-drawn to 0.025 cm in diam. For heat treatments, samples were wrapped in niobium foil and sealed in an argon-gas atmosphere in fused quartz capsules. Water quenching was done after each heat treatment. Subsequently H-J, were performed at 4.2° by slowly transporting the current through the samples 4 cm long, under transverse magnetic field, until the least detectable resistive terminal voltage was observed. The resistive critical field H, was taken as the field at which 100 pv appeared at 4.2°K across a sample 3 cm in length, with a current of 5 ma. The critical temperature T, was measured by means of a conventional four-probe resistivity technique and taken as the temperature at which the sample resistance reached one-half of full restoration of the normal-state resistance with a current l ma flowing through a sample 2 cm in length. Precipitates were observed by means of optical microscopy and carbon replication electron microscopy. The etching solution consisted of 5 ml HF, 10 ml H2SO4 10 ml H2O2, and 50 ml H2O, and shadowed carbon replicas were examined in a itachi HU-11 electron microscope operated at 50 kv. X-ray diffraction photographs were taken by a 11.46-cm-diam Debye-Scher-rer camera using copper Ka radiation. The micro-hardness was measured under a load of 200 g using

THIS review of the progress made in iron and steel metallurgy during the past year is confined to developments in this country. It attempts to give examples to illustrate progress made rather than to appraise results. As a result of the gradually diminishing supply of rich iron ores and of predictions made as to the probable life of the iron-ore reserves of the Lake Superior District, attention of iron and steel executives was directed to the question of beneficiation of iron ores. Laboratory and plant-scale experimental work was conducted on the wash ores .of Minnesota and an investigation, was, begun on the Old Range low-grade ores.

(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911.) . ONE Of the most significant developments in the iron industry in recent years has been the discovery and opening of enormous reserves of low-grade ore in eastern and northeastern Cuba. The two principal fields are the Mayari and the Moa, situated on Nipe bay, in the Province of Oriente. A less well-known district of the same type is that of Baracoa, at the east of the island, and another is in Camaguey province in central Cuba. In the comprehensive estimates of the iron-ore reserves of the world, published during the summer of 1910 by the International Geological Congress in Sweden,' these Cuban deposits are estimated at about 2,000,000,000 tons. Certain it is that the reserve is a large one. The Spanish-American Iron Co., the Juragua Iron Co. (Bethlehem Steel Co.), the U. S. Steel Corporation, and others have been active in this exploration.. The Spanish-American Iron Co. has established a port for the handling of these ores at Felton, has built a railway 16 miles to the ore-fields, and has opened up deposits for steam-shovel mining. Its expenditures have reached an aggregate of about $6,000,000 in preparation for the handling of these ores. Shipment of the ore to Sparrow's Point, Md., has begun and may be expected to rise to a considerable amount in the near future. The ore reaches this point at a cost per unit of iron considerably lower than Lake Superior ores, and the presence of a low percentage of nickel gives a desirable steel. It is not the purpose of this article to consider these ores from a commercial stand-point, but rather to discuss their-origin. THE only investigations on record of the reactions occurring during the Bessemer blow are of charges containing a large percentage of manganese, with the exception of two partial analyses by Snelus and Barker of the. English method, where a low percentage of manganese was used. They do not give the analysis of the spiegel, nor do they report any graphitic carbon after the first stage of the process. Both report only traces of manganese after the first stage until the addition of spiegel. The slags corresponding to the samples of metal were not analyzed.

SILICON and its metallurgical uses have been the subject of speculation since the earliest days of modern civilization. The early philosophers, Theophrastus and Pliny, believed that silica was a special form of ice, an opinion that was not seriously challenged until the seventeenth century. The first comprehensive view of the nature of silica was advanced by Lavoisier in 1787. He assumed silica to be an oxide of an unknown metal. In 1808 Berzelius produced ferrosilicon by heating silica, iron and charcoal. Probably the first produc¬tion of crystallized silicon was in 1854 when H. St. C. Deville accidentally produced the material while electrolyzing a double chloride of aluminum and sodium containing siliceous impurities. It is not strange that the early investigators should have given so much attention to silica and silicon, because of the great natural abundance of the former. Although silicon does not exist in the elemental state in nature, it has been estimated that the lithosphere contains approximately 60 per cent silica; quartz and rock crystal are found in practically every part of the world.

I bring this investigation to your attention to emphasize the needless waste attendent upon the use of tin plate with an unnecessarily heavy tin coating. With our present knowledge, we are unable commercially to produce coatings as light as the lower weights used in this test. If, however, future research should develop means to this end, the resultant product would meet all practical requirements, and a very considerable saving in pig tin would result. DISCUSSION G. H. Clamer.-—The National Canners' Association is studying the action of fruit juices, etc., on solders. Of course these tests will take quite a long time, and we hope by that time the war will be over and there will be no need for conserving tin for war purposes. Germany for a great many years has prohibited the use of more than 37 per cent. of lead in alloys used in contact with food products. The eutectic composition is 37 per cent. of lead and 63 per cent. of tin; alloys containing more than that percentage of lead have some free lead. J. W. Richards,' South Bethlehem, Pa.—A great deal of conservation can result from the packing of dry foods in cartons and in fiber packages instead of using sheet tin. Many of the boxes used for packing things other than food are frequently made of sheet tin because it prints and lithographs well; these could be made of sheet iron coated with copper or some other substitute metal which prints equally well. The Aluminum Bronze Industry W. M. CORSE,† Mansfield, Ohio.—The conservation of tin, in view of the shipping situation, is one of great importance. Several methods of conservation can be employed: 1. Reduction of the amount of tin in an alloy or compound. 2. Substitution of an entirely different metal or compound for tin. 3. A combination of the first and second methods. The second method is the one that I wish to discuss. Metallic aluminum, has been known for a long time, and its use in copper alloys was discovered about 1855 by Lord Percy. The high cost of production of metallic aluminum retarded its commercial development, and it was not until the discovery of the electrochemical processes for its production that it came to be known as a common metal. I have been particularly interested, for the past few years, in working with the alloy known as aluminum bronze, which is usually composed of approximately 90 parts of copper and 10 parts of aluminum, by weight.

YOUR committee asks that I speak today on the relations of the engineering profession to public affairs. That takes in a lot of ground. This being a cheerful occasion, I will assume that I should exclude the engineer's function as a taxpayer. This being a nonpartisan occasion, I will assume that I should not refer to his voting emotions in 1940. Perhaps what was in the minds of your committee was the application of engineering thought to the confusions of the times. That is also a lot of ground. I fear, however, its boundaries disappear in mirages and rainbows on all sides. Now any entry of the engineer into public affairs involves his breaking into the fields of the sociologists, the economists, and the politicians. However I don't know why, seeing the difficulties these professions are having, they should not welcome a little help.

A dynamic theory of precipitation hardening in alloys containing cohevenl, stvess-.free, ordered particles is developed. The yield stvess is predicted from the stress dependence of the plastic strain vale, which is related to a derived dislocation velocity-stress function. The theory is shown to predict the magnilude and temperature dependence of the yield stress of a commercial nickel-base superalloy as well as many details of its slip structure. GLEITER and Hornbogen have developed a theory of the yield stress in alloys hardened by coherent, stress-free ordered ptrticles based on the observation that dislocations (b = a/2 (110)) glide in pairs.' When a dislocation pair shears through an ordered particle, the glide motion of the leading dislocation is impeded since it must create antiphase boundary (APB), whereas the motion of the trailing dislocation is assisted because it annihilates APB produced by the first one. Taking into account the APB energy, the size, and spacing of the particles, G-H predict the observed yielding behavior in Ni/18.8 Cr/6.2 A1 alloys composed of a matrix phase y '(nickel-solid solution) and particles of y' (basically Ni3A1). The G-H theory, as well as all previous theories of hardening by coherent ordered particles, do not include the details of dislocation motion; the present dynamic theory is an attempt to overcome this limitation. In the dynamic theory, the yield stress is predicted from the stress dependence of the plastic strain rate, which is related to a derived dislocation velocity-stress function. This function can be evaluated if the structure of the alloy, the APB energy of the ordered phase, and the characteristic drag or frictional stresses of the matrix and precipitate phases are known. The theory is shown to account for the observed temperature dependence of the yield stress in a commercial nickel-base superalloy. 1) NICKEL-BASE SUPERALLOYS Although their compositions are complex, the nickel-base superalloys have remarkably simple structures. RAPID progress has been made during the past year in the copper mills throughout the country. Particular efforts have been made to increase the fine-grinding efficiency by the installation of larger classifying units operating in closed circuit with ball mills, such as the 78-in. high-weir Akins installation at the Phelps Dodge plant at Ajo, Ariz.; also the Type "FX" Dorr classifiers of Nevada Consolidated at McGill. Nev. and the "FX" Dorr bowl classifier of the Braden Copper Co. in Chile. Some of the copper milling plants in the Southwest, such as Chino in New Mexico and Ray Con. in Arizona, have replaced rolls operating wet in their fine-grinding circuit by rod mills. At Hollinger primary rod mills were formerly used in open circuit followed by pebble mills in closed circuit with classifiers. They now have primary ball mills in closed circuit with large extra heavy classifiers and no secondary mills. This new installation is producing the same grinding on 5000 tons per day with a reduction in cost of nearly 4c. per ton. At the Braden plant, in Chile, short-head Symons crushers have replaced 54-in. rolls, thereby in- creasing crushing capacity with some saving in maintenance cost.

To the question, " Do the Pennsylvania anthracites contain phosphorus?" asked at the last meeting of the Institute during the discussion on the metallurgical value of Western lignites, I can now give a definite answer. Through the kindness of a gentleman connected with the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and another connected with one of the principal ironworks on the Lehigh, there was sent to the Ironmasters' Laboratory a number of samples of the coals now largely shipped from the Schuylkill and Lehigh regions. A SURVEY of the Mesabi Range iron-ore industry demonstrates that a satisfactory degree of technical progress has been achieved in the last fifteen years. This advance has not been made over a uniform front, but, by salients and bays, according to the different initial positions, economic and technical, of the component producing companies. The producers endowed with rich ore have in general, because of natural advantages, progressed more slowly than their neighbors with leaner properties. The advance has been made step by step all along the line -blasting, loading, hauling and concentrating-and without the benefit of radical innovation. There have been, for instance, no such parallel discoveries in iron ore as leaching and flotation in copper. The much lower unit price of iron operates, of course, to bar the application of these and other practices developed for the higher-priced metals. There exists, however, a radically new concentration process whose technology is well worked out and which may become economically operative in the not too distant future; this, as so often happens in engineering advance, because of recent developments in an entirely unrelated field. First, however, let me devote a paragraph or two to the more important economies effected in mining.

INTRODUCTION Before discussing the use of the free piston; it may be well to explain briefly the type of gas lift valves with which the loo] is designed to function. The gas lift valve ii nothing more or less than a small back pressure regulator. It; construction consists of an outer hous ing covering a seamless metallic bellows in such a way as in form a sealed pressure vessel or pressure dome. To the bellow* in attached a stem and to this stem is attached a .rating member. When the valve is run into the hole, a pre-delermined pressure charge is placed in the pressure dome. As shown in Fig. 1. the valve is furnished in four different major assem-blies. to accomplish good results in different types of wells. The valve is mounted on a pup joint (Fig. 2a) : the eoin-plele assembly is entered into the tubing siring at the desired location. Each valve is furnished with a revere flow check valve (Fig. 2-b) to eliminate any back wash through the mechanism. Valve action is as follows: At any time the casing pressure is allowed to exceed the pressure forces within the pressure dome of the valve, the valve simply opens and passes gas from the rasing annulus into the tubing. When the casing pressure forces arc allowed to bleed to a force less than the pressure force within the dome, of the valve. the valve closes. With this type of construction. it is possible to open and close the valve or valves at will from the surface, the medium of the gas pressure in the rasing annnlus. The cycle of operation is governed by a tine cycle motor valve, commonly referred to as a gas lift interutitter or gas life surfacr controller (Fig. 3). In actual practice. after the well is unloaded only one valve is in operation . . . all other valve.: remain in the closed position. On pre-determined time cycles, it is possible to open and close this operating valve at will, and to pass the desired amount of gas through this valve wheneler needed. This method of gas lift is widelv used and has been found In be very efficient. However, it has long been known that even greater efficiency would be obtained if it were possible to place Piston between the injected gas and the fluid head. The free piston which will be discussed here was designed to accomplish this end and has been found to do so with very satisfactory results. DESIGN AND OPERATION OF THE FREE PISTON Basically. the free piston consist- of a telescoping assembly in which are incorporated the various control and operating parts (Fig. A set of sleeve valves which are opened and closed by movement of the telescoping section is contained in the. tool. A cross section of the free piston is shown in Fig. 4-11, 'rile main body cotain- a seamless monel bellows of the same type as that generally used in pressure charged gas lift valves (Fig. 4-c), and a valve core to permit placing a pressure charge in the bellows before the free piston is placed in service. The bellows is the main control unit of the free piston and performs two function: 1. It governs the opening and closing of the sleeve valves. a.: dictated by the producing activities of the well in which the piston is operating. 2. In its normal position, it holds a rubber packer in an elongated position to permit passage of fluid between the packer and the tubing walls. The lower section of the free piston contains a hydraulic shock absorber which cushions the return of the tool to its

A FEW years ago, the Ventilation Committee established the practice of presenting one topic each year for discussion at the annual meeting. The practice has met good response on the part of committee members and I suggest that it be continued. The topic chosen for this year, "Underground Anemometry," is a topic which has bothered me for more than 20 years. It seems to me that the coal industry is content to rely on slipshod methods for measuring the rate of flow of air underground, so I prefaced my discussional charge to committee members with the statement that I regard air measurements made in the usual way, with hand held anemometer, as no good. Agreements and disagreements came in from more than a dozen engineers, some of whom are with operating companies, coal and metal; some with manufacturers; others with government agencies.

A HEAVY gel of bentonite clay has been proposed as an effective lubricant to speed down the ways to sea, river, or lake, the mighty cargo ships now hitting the water at the rate of about three a day. Another unusual application of a nonmetallic mineral is in food conservation, for the claim has been made that the next new item on the menu for poultry and rabbits will be vitamin tablets prepared from mont-morillonite clay. These uses have minor importance but illustrate not only the diversity in utilization, but the notable trend in 1942 toward mobilizing nonmetallic minerals for the war program. Although occupying less headline space than iron, steel, copper, aluminum, magnesium, and other metals, the nonmetallics are filling important emergency needs. Mica and quartz crystal are essential to communication; asbestos is urgently needed in fireproof heat and electrical insulation; and strontium minerals are utilized in the manufacture of signal flares and tracer bullets.

The flow of a gas-free liquid through a spherical-grain sand has been investigated by S1ichter.l By theoretical considerations involving a rather large number of approximations he arrives at the following flow-formula: V = CPd2At NLB{1 - m) where V is the volume of liquid delivered in time t through a cylindrical column of sand of length L and cross-sectional area A by a pressure-drop P when the sand grains of diameter d are packed to a porosity m and the coefficient of viscosity of the liquid is n. C and B are constants which were determined from geometrical relations; B was in reality a function of . Values of B(l — m) for various values of m were given in a table. In the same Annual Report of the U. S. Geological Survey, King reported the results of his experiments on the flow of water through porous media. He found that there was a departure of about 86 per cent. from a linear relationship between rate of flow and pressure, for a specimen of Dunnville sandstone for pressure drops not exceeding 60 cm. of mercury. The specimen was approximately 4 cm. in diameter and 5.1 cm. in length. Over the same range of pressure he found a departure of 45 per cent. for a specimen of Madison sandstone. For unconsolidated sands he found departures as great as 49 per cent. for pressure drops of 70 cm. of mercury; for pressure drops not exceeding a few inches of water he obtained a close approximation to a linear relation. EVEN though most of the program of the joint meeting at Easton, Pa., on Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. was devoted to the interests of combustion engineers rather than to coal-mining engineers, nevertheless the A.I.M.E. Coal Division was well represented, with 83, or close to one third of those in attendance giving this as their affiliation. The fuels division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers had 108 representatives, and an equal number reported no society affiliation. Added to the men's total registration was that of some twenty ladies so the total attendance was in the neighborhood of 325, exceeding that of the last two joint meetings, at Birmingham and Columbus, and equaling the 1938 crowd at Chicago.
