The pressure and composition of the solid solution of nitrogen in chromium has been investigated as a function of temperature. The partial molal heat of solution, the activity of nitrogen in solid solution, and the partial molal free energy have been computed. The enthalpy of three reactions is summarized: N + 2Cr(3) = Cr2N(4), H° = —28,500 cal per mol 1/2N2(p) + 2Cr(8) = Cr2N(3)1 ?HO = —23,500 cal per mol 1/2N2(p) = N, ?H° = 5,000 cal per mol. WORKERS who have investigated the problem of the preparation of ductile chromium have been concerned with the effects of minor amounts of impurities upon this refractory metal. In particular, gaseous impurities such as oxygen and nitrogen have been suspected of causing trouble because of many known cases where brittleness in transition elements has been definitely traced to these elements. In order to evaluate the possible effects of the nitrogen impurity in chromium, it appeared desirable to learn something of the dependence of the nitrogen solubility upon temperature and pressure. Previous Work Maier3 in 1942 in his treatise on sponge chromium reviewed the thermodynamics of the chromium nitrides Cr2N and CrN, both of which are well-estab- lished compounds, but which apparently have not been studied in much detail. Maier presented some free energy-temperature expressions for the reactions 2 Cr,N = 4 Cr + N2 [1] and 4 CrN = 2Cr2N + N2 PI based mainly on the work of Satoh2 and Sano." Pearson and Ende3 in 1953 briefly reviewed the thermodynamics of Cr-N using the same data available to Maier, and also derived a free energy-temperature expression for reaction 1. Of the two nitrides mentioned previously, the present investigation was only concerned with Cr,N, since this nitride is in equilibrium with the metal phase, at least over most of the temperature range, Blix4 in 1929 established the structure of Cr2N (close-packed-hexagonal) by X-ray diffraction methods, and indicated that its homogeneity limits extend from 11.2 pet to 15.1 wt pet N. J.-I think it may be of interest in respect to the information we have received in regard to the danger of machinery in mining operations, to state that in the particular type of metal miming which the New Jersey Zinc Co. is doing at Franklin, during the past year, although there have been other accidents, that method of miming was free from any accident due to machinery underground. It may give a different light as to the relative degree of the importance of machinery as varying with different types of mining. ARTHUR WILLIAMS, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Kneeland's able presentation of this paper, it seems to me, bears out the suggestion which has been so frequently made that in this country we have a new profession, that of the safety expert or safety engineer, which calling, if properly carried out, would include also questions of sanitation. While Mr. Kneeland was speaking, it occurred to me that perhaps any one, however experi-enced he might be in mining generally, would pass through these mine shafts and these operating rooms, and the things which might cause accidents, which would cause accidents if the right conditions were to occur, would pass by entirely unnoticed by him, but when the safety expert goes into these places he sees these things which he immedi-ately recognizes as being spots of danger and provides means for their elimination.

The increasing demand for greater speed and more accuracy, in making daily assays of ores and products from mills treating material containing but very small quantities of lead and copper, has caused the older analytical methods to be supplanted by new ones devised to meet the needs of modern work. For " control" work in copper-analyses, I had, previous to the present equipment, introduced in my laboratory the ordinary electrolytic method, using hollow cylindrical electrodes; and with these I began a series of experiments in determining the lead-content of daily mill-samples and controls. The results, proving accurate and satisfactory, I then devised, with Mr. H. E. T. Haultain, a cheaper electrode than the ordinary jaCket-electrode, which costs from $15 to $20,—the expense of the older form making the installation of many units very costly. The form of cathode finally adopted as the most satisfactory, shown in Fig. 1, is cut from 0.001-in. platinum foil. It is 12.5 cm. long, and is divided into a blade 4 cm. wide and 6.25 cm. long, and a tongue 0.7 cm. aide and 6.25 long, the immersion area being 50 sq. cm. and weight 1.5 grams. The blade is first sand-blasted and then corrugated lengthwise, in order to impart the necessary rigidity. Strips of platinum foil 0.001 in. thick, 12.5 cm. long and 0.5 cm. aide, having a median corrugation, form the anodes. Three electrodes are used in each cell; one anode in the middle and one cathode on each side of the anode. These electrodes are connected to slotted aluminum terminals, in which they are held by contact pressure. The terminals are 5/16in. rods, projecting 2 in. horizontally in front of the wall of the cabinet; at the back the middle electrode (anode) is connected with one pole of the current, and the two outer ones (cathodes) with the other pole.

PROGRESS in the general field of nonferrous physical metallurgy during the past .year has been uneventful but healthy. A continued increase is apparent in the number of useful alloys and in the mechanical treatment and heat- treatment of finished metals and alloys nothing can hinder the multiplication of alloys or the diversification of their treatment as knowledge of the behavior of .alloys increases; as ternary and quaternary alloys are better understood, hundreds of new metal combinations with unusual properties may well be expected. Evidence of rapid progress is already at hand.

S EVERAL FACTORS have brought about a vastly greater interest in the gold-mining industry in the last two or three years. Outstanding is the fact that there is an open market at a fixed price for all that can be produced. a condition that holds for no other commodity. Costs of production have decreased greatly, owing to lower prices of supplies and equipment and lower wages. Improved metallurgical processes and equipment are also available. To big new gold district is being opened up but virgin ground is being prospected with some success in many of the more remote parts of the world and right here in the United States many old properties are being reopened 111 the light of present condition<, tailing dumps are being re- worked, and profitable leases taken on abandoned property. Many of the men who are becoming interested in gold are mining engineers whose experience has all been with base metals heretofore: some are engineers with no mining experience; some are not engineers at all but men who cannot find profitable employment in their usual field of activity and are attracted by the age-old lore of the yellow metal. Some are business men with a little money and an idea that under present conditions gold mining offers a safer investment for it than most other kinds of business. It is to those more or less inexperienced new- comers in the gold-mining industry that this article i4 ad dressed. Those who are connected with the large gold mines or who have had rears of experience with the small ones will find in the following pages little or nothing of interest but it is hoped that the newer generation of small mine operators, on whom the healthy growth of the industry depends so much, may find here some helpful hints.

My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the &apos;quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

HERACLITUS, a sage of antiquity, called the dark philosopher, who refused a throne, preferring a hermit&apos;s cell, propounded, twenty-four centuries since, the maxim : [ ] War (or strife) engenders all things. This, though probably intended by Heraclitus to apply especially to the internal forces of nature, is often said, with equal reason, of the affairs of men. Controversial strife, whether fortunately or unfortunately, is a crucible through which all new discoveries in science, and all technical applications of science must pass-a test which they must all endure before they can become so vitalized as to germinate, so to speak, take root in the human mind, grow tip, and overspread the earth. The greater the number and the power of the elements arrayed against such a growth, and of the influences hostile thereto, the greater should be the inherent vitality of the germ, the more strenuous, skilful, and persistent its cultivators and upholders. During the decade last past we have had, in spite of the severe stringency of the times, an active growth of this kind in progress, whose prospective importance it would now be difficult to overrate. This is the movement which has for its motive the idea that, generally speaking, fuel should be gaseous in form, and which has for its goal the introduction into general public use of gaseous products, made by cheap and rapid processes and on a gigantic scale, distributed throughout our cities and towns in distribution-systems which shall be proportionately gigantic, and sold at prices which will bring such fuel within the means of the poorest householders. Personally, for ten years past, the writer has never failed, on occasions public or private, to urge his belief that the realization of this idea, deemed by him a certainty of the future, will bring about

THE first attempts at direct utilization of blast-furnace gas in engines were made in 1895. For a considerable time the gas had been burnt in Cowper stoves for heating the blast for the furnace, and under the boilers which supplied steam to the blowing-engines, and others serving the furnaces. It was natural, therefore, that the idea of directly employing it in gas-engines should have occurred simultaneously to several engineers, notably to Lürmann and to Lencauchez, who had pointed out the blast-furnace as a powerful -gas-producer. Nevertheless, nowhere had any attempt been made to apply it to this purpose up to the end of 1894, when Thwaite proposed it to Mr. James Riley, of the Glasgow Iron & Steel Company. About the same time investigations were being made in Belgium and in Germany, independently of Thwaite&apos;s experiments, which were not generally known on the Continent. The industrial world, which up to that time had hardly favored the idea, had thus been gradually prepared to receive it. The gas-engine, long restricted to small sizes and dependent upon the use of an expensive fuel obtainable only in large centers, now began to make headway. At the Paris Exhibition of 1889 two engines of 100 h.p. were shown and excited much interest among engineers. One had four cylinders, and was made at the celebrated works of the Deutz Company, and the other was a single-cylinder engine, exhibited by two French designers, Messrs. The big mass of anorthosite in the Lake Sanford district and the bodies of titaniferous magnetite that occur in a small area near the south margin of the mass have been described repeatedly, and the puzzling problems of the genesis of the rocks and ores have stimulated the deductive reasoning of geologists for a hundred years. Some of these men have taken a leading part in describing the anorthosite rock and forming hypotheses concerning its origin; some have contributed most to the study of the ore deposits; and some have made classical Studies introducing a basic approach to the problems of the anorthosite rock and genesis of the titaniferous magnetites. Much of the writing on the problems of rock and ore genesis has been based on physical-chemical reasoning rather than on field and microscope observations of the rocks and ores. Most of these geologists conclude that the anorthosite was formed by true magmatic crystallization, involving previous settling or squeezing out of ferromagnesian minerals from the parent magma. The associated gabbro is a separate segregation or later intrusion, and the lighter colored and finer grained facies of the anorthosite is either a chilled border zone of the anorthosite or the result of granulation by crushing of the coarse, dark blue rock of the main mass. This blue rock, called the Marcy type, is named after the highest peak in the range. The finer grained and lighter colored rock is called the Whiteface, after another mountain appropriately named for a cliff colored by this facies of the anorthosite.

The distribution of silicon between liquid silver and Fe-Si-C alloys has been studied at 1420oand 1530°C. The data are consistent with earlier studies. New data of Hager on the liquidus lines of the system Ag-Si and the distribution data are used to obtain the activity coefficient of silicon in both liquid phases. Data on the heat of mixing in iron permit accurate extension to 1600°C. Equilibrium data involving SiO2 and silicon in liquid iron together with revised data on the free energy of SiO2 are used to fix the activity of silicon in the infinitely dilute solution. The binary system exhibits strong negative deviation from ideality. At infinite dilution ? Si at 1600" is 1.25 x 10&apos;3, and at concentrations up to NSi = 0.4 the slope d InySi/dNSi has a constant value of r; = 13. It is found that logysi in the ternary solutzon is approximately but not exactly the same function of Nsi + NC as of NSi in the binary. The results are consistent with currently available data on the free energy of Sic and its solubility in molten iron. LIQUID solutions of the system Fe-Si-C have acquired considerable importance as the laboratory prototypes of blast furnace hot metal. Equilibrium studies involving such solutions and slags approximating those of the blast furnace have yielded useful information concerning the thermodynamic properties of blast furnace slags. In studies of this kind great importance attaches to a knowledge of the thermodynamic activity of silicon in the solution as a function of temperature and composition. An attempt was made by Chipman, Fulton, Gokcen, and askey&apos; to evaluate all of the pertinent data on this system and to deduce the desired relation between activity, composition, and temperature. These authors published data on the solubility of graphite and Sic in molten Fe-C-Si solutions and on the distribution of silicon between liquid iron and liquid silver. They showed further how the activity of silicon in very dilute solutions in liquid iron could be calculated from equilibrium data involving the molten alloy and solid SiO,. These calculations rested on the published thermodynamic properties of SiO, in- cluding its heat of formation which at that time was recorded as -209.8 kcal. This value has been under suspicion for some time and has recently been replaced by the concordant results from two independent laboratories2,3 which place the heat of formation of a-quartz at -217.6 kcal. This revision necessitates a re-evaluation not only of the activity of SiO2 in slag but also of silicon in molten iron. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to recalculate the activity of silicon, and in furtherance of this objective to present new data on its distribution between liquid Fe-Si-C alloys and liquid silver. HEAT OF SOLUTION OF SILICON IN IRON In order to determine the effect of temperature upon the activity coefficient it is necessary to know the heat of solution of silicon in iron as a function of composition. This is found in the data of Korber and Oelsen4 shown in Fig. 1. The curve corresponds to the following equation, which is of a form suggested by Wagner:5 Here AH is the heat absorbed in kilocalories in forming one gram atom of molten alloy from its molten elements and the N&apos;s are atom fractions. The relative partial molal enthalpies of the components, each referred to its pureliquid state and defined as zFe = aFe - PFe and zsi = HSi — -psi, are shown graphically. At low concentrations zSi = -28.5 kcal, in agreement with Kijrber and Oelsen&apos;s computation. This is in good agreement with the value of -29.3 kcal obtained by Chipman and Grant6 using an entirely different method. ACTIVITY AT INFINITE DILUTION From the known free energy of SiO, it is possible to obtain the activity of silicon in dilute solution in liquid iron from equilibrium studies. The heat of formation of a-quartz is —217.6 kcal and the heat capacity and entropy data are given by Kelley and ~ing.&apos; The free energy of formation of ß-cristo-balite at temperatures above the melting point of silicon is expressed by the following equation: Si(Z) + O2(g) = SiO2 (crist); AF" =-226,500 + 47.50T [I] The value of the deoxidation product for silicon [%Si] x [%O]2 at 1600°C according to Gokcen and chipmans is 2.8 x 10"5, in agreement with results of Hilty and Crafts.9 More recent works of Matoba,

AMIDST the tumult and the shouting of the times, there are perceptible certain tendencies, quiet though serious, to take stock of the situation with a view to putting our house in order, and of these none is more encouraging than the awakening, interest in the higher education, and especially in technical education. Various committees of the professional organizations have cast much light on the matter and have pointed the way to progress and reform, but their scope is necessarily restricted by the requirements of precision and any excursion beyond these bounds must be undertaken by the unfettered individual who is free to rush in where responsible committees fear to tread. A discussion of the bearing of the higher education on character scarcely lends itself to objective treatment and yet, fraught as it is with imponderables and abstractions, the theme cannot be escaped in any com-prehensive scheme of education. The question is being pressed with growing insist-ence, why these United States, relatively to Europe, are deficient in intellectual output, and the ready reply, "Because America is a new country and Americans are too intent on developing their natural resources," is too facile and too false to carry conviction.

PAUL D. MERICA,* Washington, D. C. (written discussion t).-This paper is a discussion of some of the results of a recent investigation1 of Prof. Zay Jeffries, and of his interpretation and generalizations from these results. This work I have followed with great interest and with appreciation of its value in clarifying our views on the nature of deformation in metals and its relation to structure. It is only by such close study of the relation of structure to mechanical properties that we shall ever be able to describe the latter in terms of their ultimate elements, and thus explain what are still mysteries in the mechanical behavior of metals; experiment and thought along these lines are in my opinion of the utmost value. If I, therefore, here record some of the difficulties I have experienced in understanding some of the generalizations of Prof. Jeffries, it is only in order that perhaps from the discussion may emerge a clearer and more consistent statement of hypothesis or theory in explanation of the facts discovered by him.

THE-Institute of Metals Division opened on Tuesday afternoon with Wheeler P. Davey as chairman and G. E. Edmunds as vice-chairman. Four papers were on the program, two being of a fundamental character. A paper on "Internal Surface in Minerals and Metals," by R. S. Dean and J. Roster, was presented by the latter; C. H. Gottschalk discussed coercive forces in powders. In answer to a question by the chairman. The author stated that he had not investigated [he temperature coefficient of resistance. A paper on "Recrystallization and Grain Growth in Cold Worked Polycrystalline Metals," by L. W. Eastwood, Arthur E. Bousu, &apos;and C. T. Eddy, was presented by Mr. Eastwood. A. great many quantitative data were given, with little reference to the theory. Theoretical considerations were discussed by Dr. Gottschalk, and C. A. Edwards of the University College of Wales, contributed very interesting comment on the relationship of size and critical strain. Dr. Edwards discussed the necessity of considering strain with time and temperature.
