INDUSTRIAL relations in the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company's Western operations covers the field of personnel and labor relations, and the principal aims are to render service to the employes of the Company and to its operating departments. Accident prevention Safety is a primary function. A safety engineer is employed at each operation. The wholehearted support of Company officials, staff, and the working force has been most successful in preventing accidents. Constant vigilance has been combined with a policy of building safety into all operating activities whether these are in the construction of a new facility, the developmnt of a mining system, or the direction of the working force. That this policy has produced results is attested to by the fact that the accident frequency rate at the Company's major mining operations in Utah has been reduced approximately 75 per cent in the ten-year period ending Dec. 31. 1946.

Fused alumina or silica crucibles were used as the containing vessel. X-ray powder photographs were taken with CrKcll radiation and the use of Straumanis type Norelco cameras of 114.6 mm diam. Crystallographic data for these compounds are shown in Table I. These results are in agreement with others of this series reported previousiy by Wernick and Geller.l The abnormally large atomic volume of Eu and Yb metal3 is manifested in EuAl2, and YbAl2, when one compares them with the compounds reported in Ref. 1. However, the behavior of Yb in the Ni compound is the same as that observed in Ni5Yb having the Cu5Ca structure.4 Thus, it appears that Yb has a valence closer to 3 only in the Ni compounds; i.e.. the 2s and Id electrons are lost to the conduction band.1,4 Europium in EuAl2 appears to have a valence closer to 2. In previous work.' X-ray patterns of ingots of NdCo2 indicated a multiphase material with faint indication of the presence of a phase having the MgCu2 structure. It was thought that NdCo2 formed peri-tectically from the melt, resulting in a multiphase system when cooled under nonequilibrium conditions. An X-ray pattern of a sample from a melt cooled more slowly than in past work showed that the major phase was NdCo2. The lattice constant, Table 1, is in excellent agreement with the value one can predict from the data of Ref. 1. One of the other phases was identified as Co5Nd. The author wishes to thank J. H. A reinvestigation of the lattice parameters of Ti-Sn alloys by the present authors has revealed consistently hiher c and a values than those obtained by Worrier. The difference is most pronounced in the c-parameters which are, therefore, used as a basis of comparison. This discrepancy was not due to air contamination, since precautions were taken to exclude this possibility. Specimens for Debye-Scherrer photograms were prepared by arc-melting 15-g buttons of Bureau of Mines titanium and 99.99 pct Sn, with compositions of 6, 8, 10, and 12 at. pct Sn. These buttons were forged under an oxygen-acetylene torch to 1/8-in. sq rods to produce relatively fine grained material. Scale and some surface were ground off, and the rods, after wrapping in molybdenum and titanium sheet, were vacuum annealed 15 min at 800 °C to remove hydrogen. Heat treatment of one of the samples at 875°C to produce ß and reveal a at the surface showed no surface contamination. Following the vacuum treatment, the specimens were wrapped in molybdenum and annealed for 1 week at 800°C under two atmospheres of argon. After water-quenching, the rods were ground so that the thickness tapered to 0.1 mm at the tips. The ground specimens were then recapsuled as previously and reannealed 1 hr at 800°C to remove cold work. The

SEVERAL important changes have been' made during 1933 in the compilation and distribution of technical literature to those interested in nonferrous physical metallurgy. The Institute of Metals, of Great Britain, announced that preprints of all its papers would be distributed monthly to all members in combination with their bulletin of abstracts. The A.I.M.E. has announced that it will distribute to all members of the Institute of Metals and Iron and Steel Divisions a monthly bulletin entitled Metals, which will carry preprints of all publications of interest to the members of these two divisions. The American Society for Steel Treating has declared its intention to change its name to the American Society for Metals in order to indicate the broader scope of its activities. The abstract service of Metals and Alloys has been improved and expanded, covering practically the entire field of metallurgical literature. These changes and innovations now provide unparalleled reference service entirely in the English language.

FOR many years the Homestake Mining Co. has devoted serious attention to the elimination of accidents, and ground is steadily being gained in this direction. In accident prevention work it is line-plunging with perfect teamwork and not the spectacular forward pass that brings progress toward the goal. In both surface plants and under- ground workings we regard "good housekeeping" as a first requisite for safety as well as efficiency. Under this term are included all types of safety guards and protective devices as well as cleanliness and orderliness it working places. Perhaps the most important factor in safety work is to arouse and maintain employee interest. The general morale and contentment of employees is of particular importance.

. In the early decades of the past century the method of starting iron blast-furnaces by " scatlolding-down" seems to have been in universal use for coke-furnaces and, at least in this country, for charcoal-furnaces also. It was likewise used at some of the early anthracite-furnaces, as is stated in the important " Reminiscences" printed by the late Samuel Thomas.' It had been generally superseded in Great Britain as early as 1850, by some variations of the plan now used, and was rarely used when Percy wrote.2 On the Continent it was still followed ill the 60's; and was elaborately described by Valerius in 1852. I have never read any statement as to when and by whom " scaffolding " was first dispensed with, but the following extracts from journals of my father seem to fix an authentic date for an instance in this country: " [Pittsburg] July 12, 1838.—Went with Major Wade to his foundry,etc., and he gave me a letter to D. Tyler, Esq., Farrandsville, Agent Boston Coke & Iron Co." " [Lockhaven, Pa.] July 18, 1838.—Heard there was a flat-boat going to take some gentlemen up to Farrandsville. Got on boat and to Farrandsville, 5 or 6 miles, in 1 hr. 30 min. Dined, and then delivered my letter to Ma Tyler, who showed me much attention, and everything belonging to the furnace, and had the water turned on the wheel that I might see the blowing-cylinders at work. There are two cylinders, 6-ft. stroke, -56 in. in diameter, but they find that one makes more than enough blast for the furnace. The furnace has 16-ft. boshes, 7-ft. tunnel-head, and is 47 ft. high, 3 tuyeres, and 3 heating-ovens [hot blast-ovens]. A

I. HISTORICAL. BARITE has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL DISTRIBUTION. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State-namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties:, Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties-Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell-but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

MAN?S desire to harden metal is older than recorded history and obviously would date from the moment when he found his implements were not equal to the demands of service. This need for hardness in metal may be divided roughly into two main classifications: (1 :I need for hardness through- out-for purposes of greater strength or elasticity of the whole implement or member, and (2) need for surface hardness alone. A strong steel needed to transmit stresses or resist de- formation is an example of the first class. In metals only surface- hardened, the chief need is for resistance to wear. Obviously the whole gamut of all uses can be imagined- from the extreme of a simple cantilever supporting a load in space to that of a solidly supported face plate serving to resist wear. It is the in- creasing of wear resistance which I propose to discuss.

The isothermal dendritic precipitation of y in p CuZnSn is compared with the isothermal formation of Widmanstatten a plates in p CuZn. Although both precipitates are evidently bounded by semicoherent interfaces, the dendritic shape of y evolves through smooth "sinuoidal" shape perturbations, while a-p interfaces tend to be strictly planar, or rnicroscopically faceted. An estimate of the average inter-facial free energy of cube-oriented y in p through the Mullins-Sekerka analysis indicates that it is low (of the order of 50 ergs per sq cm). Interface mication is apparently controlled by volunle dij'usion, and the observed anisotropy in growth probably results from anisotropy of inter facial free energy. Studies of the grain boundary precipitation of y in p indicate that the precipitate can grow in both $ grains, but becomes unstable with respect to the grain with which it shares a mobile semicoherent interface. Facets observed at the tips of Kurdjumov-Sacks-oriented Wid-manstatten a plates correspond to variants of an irrational hahit, near (231)0. Comparison with Hu and Smith's determination of relative interfacial free energies of a-(3 boundaries suggests that this system possesses an extremely deep o cup, which results in an ej'ective low-o zone. The possible effects of such a cup on the stability of a-p interfaces are discussed, a needles, grown during rapid continuous cooling, possess microscopically smooth interfaces, and are characterized by a high degree of' damage in the region of the boundaries. These boundaries, induced to move on tempering at 200"C, become faceted as equilibrium is approached, which seems to indicate that boundary structure and mobility in this system are dependent on the local degvee of departure from equilibrium MULLINS and sekerkal have elucidated the phase boundary stabilizing effect of surface tension. a factor not taken into account in previous treatments of morphological development. Their analysis applies to the isothermal growth of a pure spherical precipitate (planar in the limit of infinite radius) in a slightly supersaturated solution, under conditions of inter-facial local equilibrium and isotropy of interfacial free energy. More recently, several other factors which might tend to stabilize planar interfaces have received attention. These are: i) interface diffusion;4"8 and ii) slow interfacial reaction. cahn7 included a slight anisotropy in interfacial free energy, and showed that it has no stabilizing effect, but forces shape perturbations to reflect the anisotropy. shewmon4 noted that dendritic morphologies are rarely observed in solid-solid systems, and, in particular, postulated that slow interfacial reaction occurs at all boundaries between proeutectoid ferrite and austenite, except those which propagate parallel to {11 l)y planes (for Kurdjumov-Sachs [K-S] related phases). Previously, Aaronson~ had proposed interfacial reaction at the broad faces of Widmanstatten plates, and expected that the lateral motion of high-mobility incoherent ledge edges would produce planar precipitates bounded by law-mobility semi-coherent interfaces. The problem of interfacial reaction during the dif-fusional formation of precipitates has often been ignored, although it is apparent that a small component of chemical reaction must exist at any moving interface." Further, all solutions of the diffusion equations for boundary conditions corresponding to isothermal growth predict infinite growth rate at time zero, so that elements of interfacial reaction would be most easily detected at early times. However, reported deviations from diffusion control are comparatively rare," and the local-equilibrium diffusion-control model appears adequate for the description of many isothermal growth systems.'2"9 Cahn14 has treated the problem of migration of an interface which is able to reach positional energy minima, and concluded that such an interface, if subjected to a high local ther-modynamic "driving force", may migrate normal to itself without the benefit of ledges. THE use of minute boron additions to steel has been given considerable attention in recent years. Comparisons made between boron-free and boron-containing heats of otherwise identical analysis have indicated, beyond a doubt, the potent effect of boron for increasing hardenability. The actual hardenability increase has been expressed as a multiplying factor, or in terms of the percentage of other alloying elements boron might replace, The present study presents the results of a systematic survey of. the use of boron as an addition to two types of alloyed steels and as a replacement for various percentages of molybdenum in these steels, Both cast and wrought steels of the two basic compositions were prepared. Molybdenum, because of its scarcity at the time the investigation was started, was selected as the element to be replaced by boron. Attention was also given to the effects of boron on other properties of the steels, particularly their notched-bar toughness, to investigate other advantages or limitations of this element as an alloy addition. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Steels Investigated The two basic compositions used in this survey of boron as a replacement for molybdenum are given in Table I. The cast steels were higher than the wrought steels in silicon content to improve the casting quality. [ ] Each of these base steels, both cast and wrought, was made with molybdenum contents of o, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, or 0.40 per cent, the total comprising 20 steels. In addition, each of these 20 compositions . was prepared with boron additions in amounts of 0.0015, 0.003, and o,006 per cent as ferroboron; and in amounts of 0.002 and 0.005 per cent as two com¬mercial intensifier alloys, designated alloys A and B. The boron-treated steels totaled 100, and the entire series 120, Test Procedure Each steel was melted as an individual heat in a 50-lb., magnesia-lined induction furnace. Iodine is a soft, lustrous, grayish-black nonmetallic element with a density of 4.9. It is the least active of the four members of the halogen family. The other members are, in order of increasing activity, bromine, chlorine, and fluorine. Iodine is a solid at ordinary temperatures, while bromine is a liquid and chlorine and fluorine are gases. Iodine melts at 113°C and volatilizes at 184.4°C to a blue-violet gas with an irritating odor. It occurs in nature only as iodates and iodides or other combined forms. It was discovered by Bernard Courtois in France in 1811, who noticed its presence as an unknown substance in crude soda ash obtained from burning seaweed. Gay-Lussac recognized it as a new element and named it iode, from the Greek word "ioeides or iodes" for violet color (MacMillan, 1970). The world production is not known with any great certainty, but it is probably between 25 and 35 million lb per year, of which about 30% is consumed in the United States. Geology and Mineralogy Iodine compounds occur as a minor constituent as a mineral in the Chilean nitrate deposits and in solution in brines and seawater. According to the US Geological Survey, it is the 47th most abundant element in the earth's crust. The minerals lautarite, Ca (I03)3 (calcium iodate), and dietzeite, Cat (103)2 (CrO4), (calcium iodate-chromate) are found in Chilean nitrate deposits which are located in Antofagasta and Tarapaca provinces on the eastern slope of the coast range in a desert area. Various brines contain iodine compounds. Seawater contains about 0.05 ppm of iodine and some seaweeds will extract and accumulate it up to 0.45% on a dry basis. Some coals in West Germany also contain iodine compounds. The known and potential sources of iodine reported in 1968 are given in Table 1. Table 2 lists estimated world iodine reserves. Iodine has been recovered from brines in Java, Indonesia, France, England, and the USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. The indicated reserves and future resources of iodine are large but have never been adequately measured. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable. Markets and Prices Iodine and its compounds are generally marketed in the form of: iodine, crude; iodine, resublimed; calcium iodates; calcium iodide; potassium iodide, sodium iodide, and numerous organic compounds. Product Specifications Crude iodine, World market: 99-99.5% 12. Crude iodine, US produced, average: 99.8% 12. Crude iodine, USP XVII Specs: not less than 99.8% percent I2. Resublimed iodine is usually 99.9% and ACS specifications call for not over 0.005% total bromine and 0.020% nonvolatile materials (Anon., 1971). Prices, c.i.f. United States, for iodine have been steadily increasing from $1.18 per lb of crude in 1967 to $6.37-7.27 in January 1981 (Anon., 1981). In 1980 the price of iodine increased by 50%.

Interpretation of earth resistivity data involves not only obtaining depth to interfaces but also determining the nature of formations from their resistivity characteristics. Moore's method of interpretation envisages obtaining depths to the interfaces alone. A simple method of estimating the true resistivity values of formations by applying Hummel's formula of average resistivities is proposed. The method would increase the interpretative value of Moore's method as originally proposed. For most of the earth resistivity measurements, the four-electrode configuration developed by Wennerl is employed. In principal, the method consists of energizing (Current I) the ground through two outer electrodes and measuring the resultant potential (v) between the two inner electrodes. The configuration is such that the separation (a) between any two successive electrodes is equal. The apparent resistivity (pa) for such a configuration is given by 2p- a (V/I). By increasing the electrode separation (pa vs a) curves are obtained. Ideally, a homogeneous isotropic formation underground has a characteristic resistivity. However, the field conditions do not present such ideal cases. Almost invariably, even in the same geological bed, the physical conditions are widely different at different parts in the bed. It is further shown that the penetration of the current into the ground for a given horizontal electrode separation, a, is roughly down to a depth, equal to a. It is therefore, evident that the apparent resistivity calculated from the field observations is a weighted average of the resistivities of the materials present down to this depth. With some prior knowledge about the relative dispositions of the geological formations and their physical conditions, it would be possible, by resistivity surveys, to obtain characteristic resistivities for these formations. It is, thus, that the apparent resistivity-electrode separation curves enable one to decipher the resis- tivity distribution at various depth levels and therefore the nature of the geological formations present. Both empirical and theoretical methods have been developed for determining resistivity characteristics of the various formations. The theoretical methods proposed by Tagg2 and Roman3 are derived from studies of the potential distribution on the surface due to the presence of layers of widely differing resistivities underground. The more recent methods of Wetzel and McMurry4 and Wetzel and Mooney5 are but extensions of the original Roman method of superposition. These methods suffer from lack of similarity of the actual field conditions with those of assumed conditions in developing the theory. The empirical methods such as the one developed by Gish and rooneY6 depend purely on personal observation and local peculiarities, and are applicable only for those limited areas. Out of the empirical methods, moore's7 cumulative resistivity method is still found to be applicable in several localities of differing conditions. While Reudy in 1945 adduced some theoretical justification for the method (Eve and Keys),8 Muskat9 and Mooney 10 tried to show the lack of theoretical basis for the same. It is, however, observed that the method in practice "forms a valuable means of successfully attacking the apparent resistivity curves which fail to respond to the Gish-Rooney, the Tagg or the Roman logarithmic methods" (Ramachandra Rao). 11 Comparatively good results are also reported by Melbyel2 by employing Moore's method in interpreting the resistivity results obtained for ground water in the city of Gunnison, Colo. MOORE'S METHOD As has already been pointed out, the application of the theoretical methods is time-consuming, laborious and sometimes not applicable for quick and accurate interpretation of the field data. moore7 has developed a quick method for obtaining depths to interfaces by plotting the cumulative sums of resistivities, against the corresponding electrode separations a instead of plotting the usual Pa — a curve. In this process of continuous integration, corrections for small variations in resistivities, arising due to local surface conditions or adjacent layers, are made, while large consistent variations are brought out

One can hardly pick up a newspaper, magazine, review or economic treatise without confronting the fact that we have or are threatened with more .of certain goods than we have use for, whether it be corn, wheat, cotton, coal or oil, -lumber, 'leather, newsprint, automobiles, zinc, lead, copper or what not. How did this unprecedented state of affairs arise? Who is to blame? How shall we avoid smothering ourselves in our own production? The voice of the farmer is raised in appeal to the Government to relieve him from the dilemma of his own fertility. In answer the Government employs thousands of experts and spends millions of dollars to aid the farmer. But to what end? To make him still more efficient so that he may produce even greater surpluses? Not satisfied with the result, it spends other millions to prepare vast areas of the arid land of the West for more farmers to cultivate and insure yet larger surpluses. Then what? In March, 1938, E. P. Fleming, metallurgist for the American Smelting and Refining Co. inaugurated an investigation into the possibilities of recirculating the gases from Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines operating on lead charge, with the twofold object of concentration of the SO2 content and reduction in volume of total gas produced. The possibility of recovering a commercial grade of SO2 gas from D & L machines operating on lead charge had previously been considered by several investigators. Early History of Recirculation The Selby Smelter Commission Report, published by the Bureau of Mines in 1914, contains a chapter by A. E. Wells regarding results obtained at Selby, wherein some of the richer gas was recirculated through a hood over the pallets. Oldright and Miller of the U. S. Bureau of Mines had also made tests at Trail, B.C., and at Kellogg, Idaho. R. C. Rutherford, while at the Chihuahua, Mexico, Smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., in May, 1937, proposed recirculation of D & L gases to decrease the volume of gas handled by the baghouse. At none of these plants, however, was the operation commercialized. In July, 1938, Mr. Fleming, in correspondence with the Selby Plant, inquired regarding the possibility of obtaining 6 pct SO2 gas from the Selby D & L machines. At that time, the writer advised that there was slight possibility of obtaining 6 pct SO2 gas without re- circulation, but believed that it was possible with recirculation, and that experimental work toward that end should be tried at some plant where spare D & L machines were available. The foregoing statement was based on the following information then available— 1. Tests on Selby first-over machines showed 2.28 pct SO2 from first windbox and 1.03 pct SO2 from second windbox, and corresponding figures for second-over charge of 0.81 pct SO2 for first windbox and 0.08 pct SO2 for second windbox. 2. Oldright and Miller (US. Bureau of Mines) in 1932 at Bunker Hill, on 42 in. X 22 ft machines found: a. First-over charge—Maximum SO2 concentration (leaving cake) of 9.5 pct. b. First-over charge—SO2 concentration of over 8 pct from the 4 ft to the 12 ft points beyond the front dead-plate and that the concentration then dropped rapidly. c. That approximately 80 pct of the total sulphur eliminated on the second-over machines occurred during the travel of the pallets from the 1 ft to the 6 ft distances from the dead-plate. d. That approximately 94 pct of the total sulphur eliminated on the second-over machines occurred over the first windox. 3. Oldright and Miller (US. Bureau of Mines) in 1932, at Trail, on 42 in. X 50 ft machines found: a. First-over charge—SO2 varied from 2.0 pct to 5.5 pct (leaving cake) from the 12 ft to 28 ft points from the deadplate. b. That the average SO2 increased from 1.0 pct at 7 ft from dead-plate to maximum of 3.3 pct at 20 ft, then dropped to 1.5 pct at 40 ft. c. That on a 22 ft, second-over machine with an 11 in. bed the SO2 varied from 4.5 pct to 6.5 pct from the 2 ft to the 8 ft points from the dead-plate. d. That on the final roast, the SO2 concentration also varied across the pallets; that is, 2 1/2 pct at the side, increasing to 6.0 pct, 5 in. in, and to 7.0 pct at 10 in. to 20 in. in, then decreased vice versa at the opposite side. e. Concluded that most of the sulphur on a 22 ft machine was removed over the first 7 ft of the first windbox; therefore, they partitioned the first windbox so that the exit gas from the second 4 ft section was returned to the surface of the pallets over the fist 7 ft section, and during a seven-day trial the gas from the 4 ft section averaged 2.4 pct SO2, while the recirculated gas from the first 7 ft section only increased to 3.8 pct SO2. (Excess suction over the 7 ft section to prevent escape of SO2 laden gas from the 4 ft section caused dilution by air.)

MISSOURI SCHOOL OF MINES The Missouri Mining Association has enjoyed a very good year. Last October the society was reorganized and the following officers elected for the year: E. Ross HOUSHOLDER, President, ORE N. MANESS, Vice-president, WILLIAM REBER. Secretary, RUAL CHAVEZ, Treasurer. The head of our mining department, Prof. C. E. Forbes, is now serving as a Major in the United States. Army. We were fortunate in having. Prof. Chas. E. Locke, of Boston, with us for part of the winter to take charge of the senior mining work. During the autumn and winter months we had a number of informal smoker lectures in Norwood Hall. Among the speakers at these meetings were: H. A. Buehler, Missouri State Geologist; Chas. E. Locke, Boston, Mass.; V. H. Hughes, Tulsa, Okla.; Dorsey Lyon, Washington; D. C.; Prof. G. H. Cox, Professor of Geology, Rolla, Mo.; together with a number of returned alumni.
