In a previous paper1 the results of cutting tests on free-cutting brass rod were reported. Investigation was made of the effects of variation in lead content, microstructure and cold drawing. The author's reply to the discussion of that paper includes a study of the directional cutting properties of drawn and annealed rod. The present paper records the results of tests made on series of samples in which the tin, iron and copper contents have been varied. The apparatus used and method of testing are described in detail in the previous paper. The machine is of the pendulum-operated milling type used and described by Airey and Oxford.2 Angular readings of the height to which the pendulum rises after falling from a fixed position, both when a cut is made and when the pendulum swings freely, give the basis for calculation of the energy consumed in making a cut. Careful weighing of the sample before and after cutting gives a measure of the amount of metal removed. The results are expressed in footpoiinds per cubic inch of metal removed, and have been called "unit cutting energy." In the course of the discussion of the author's earlier paper, W. B. Price reported large-scale tests involving some 50,000 lb. of material. These tests indicated that the addition of as much as 0.6 per cent of iron and 0.25 per cent of tin had apparently no adverse effect on the highspeed cutting characteristics of the rod. The rod also contained a small amount of nickel. The test results reported here tend to confirm his observations. Effect of Variation in Tin Content The castings for this series were made 2 by 1 by 9 in. and were processed as follows: 1. Castings were annealed at 500" C. for 7 hr. 2. Cold-rolled to 0.700 in.

E DUCATION for the mineral industry was at first a single comprehensive curriculum, but it was early recognized that the main basis of mining is physics, while that of metallurgy is chemistry. The first school to offer curricula leading to degrees in mineral industry education in the United States (1853) had separate ones in mining and metallurgy. The Columbia School of Mines (the first really successful one) had only a single curriculum when it opened in 1864, but within a few years had so reorganized its work that it offered curricula in mining, metallurgy, geology, chemistry, and civil engineering. Interest in the metallurgy or geology curricula was slight at first, and for the next 30 years the great majority of Columbia students took the mining curriculum, probably partly because it contained nearly as much geology as the geology curriculum, practically all the metallurgy, and most of the chemistry, and partly because of the degree awarded for it. Other schools kept their mining curricula equally broad, and as late as 1900-1910 men were graduating as mining engineers who were practically as well prepared to make geology or metallurgy their life work, as they were for mining. Gradually, however, the subject matter of mining geology and metallurgy became so enriched through research and development that separate curricula in them became worth while; their progressive development is the subject of another chapter. Mining curricula also began to be somewhat diversified, and schools in areas where coal mining was of outstanding importance began to offer options in coal mining, the earlier curricula having been chiefly aimed at metal mining. The petroleum industry began its meteoric rise about the same time as mineral instruction in this country, but little more of applied science attended its birth than had attended such ancient practical arts as copper and iron

NUMEROUS publications have examined hot hardness of metals and alloys. Some have studied creep in long-time hardness tests, few of which, however, were tested under a spherical indentor. 1-3 The results of Mulhearn and Tabor' indicate a parabolic-type creep for indium and lead, whereas Moore and Tabor2 how a logarithmic-type creep for indium. Similar semilog relationships between hardness and time have been found by Goffard and wheeler3 for magnesium, aluminum, and their alloys. In this note, the elevated-temperature hardness of some complex alloys, shown in Table I, was examined to discover whether any basic information about the deformation behavior of the alloys could be obtained. One of the alloys, H-13 alloy steel, was tested for short-time creep tests to examine the hardness-time relationship at various temperatures. A standard Brinell Hardness Tester, mounted with an appropriate furnace and 99 pct A12O3 poly-crystalline indentor, was employed for the purpose. The alloys were tested at temperatures from room to 1400°F for 30 sec under 1500-kg load. The creep studies were conducted for about 8500 sec at 7l°, 500°, 1000°, and 1200°F. For constants A and B, a relationship of the type H = Aexp(-BT) [ll was obtained for all alloys between hardness, H, and temperature, T. In the semilogarithmic plot, the data points for each alloy were arranged into two groups, each group on a straight line with a specific set of A and B values. These results are in agreement with many such observations on hot hardness, notably those of Westbrook for pure metals,4 The thermal softening coefficient, B, and transition temperature, Tt, for various alloys are shown in Table I. The change in slope around the transition temperature suggests an apparent change in the mechanism of deformation, probably from the shear (below Tt) to the diffusion type of mechanism. At the temperatures above Tt, for constants A' and B, a relationship of the type was obtained between H and T, Fig. 1. The nature of the equation, where R is gas constant, suggests the possibility of a thermally activated mechanism of deformation above Tt. The constant B' may hence be defined as the apparent activation energy of indentation. The B' values of various alloys are shown in Table I. A plot of B vs B' gives a curvilinear relation shown in Fig. 2. The indentation-creep data for H-13 alloy steel is shown in Fig. 3. At 71" and 500°F, the creep initially follows the logarithmic time law. However, the indentation size stabilizes after 7 sec at 71°F, and after 10 sec at 500°F. Further increase in loading time has no effect on indentation size. The creep of 1000° and 1200°F follows the logarithmic time law for the first 1000 sec, after which the

One of the little electric-resistance magnesia crucible-furnaces which I designed for the metallurgical laboratory of the School of Mines of Columbia University is shown, in vertical section, of full natural size, in Fig. 1. The furnace itself consists of two semi-cylinders of magnesia, A A, with a cover of magnesia, B B, and a stopper, C, also of magnesia, which is perforated to admit the leads x, y, of a thermo-electric couple. The furnace is heated by the spiral of platinum wire, D D (entering and departing by the openings I and K), through which a current of any desired strength is passed, bringing it to incandescence, and to ally temperature, not above the melting-point of platinum, which may be desired. The crucible E, actually used in this furnace, is also of magnesia. I have heard of some unsuccessful attempts with furuaces of this general class, and have attributed these failures to the use of siliceous materials for the furnace-walls. Of course such a result is what we should expect, since the silica mould readily be electrolysed by the current, and the resultant silicon would alloy with platinum ; but the little magnesia furnace here clescribed seems to be wholly free from this objection. It has been used in my laboratory for some months, and temperatures, up to 1100° C, hare been developed in it over considerable periods of time—indeed, it has been held near 1400" C. for about two hours—without indication, thus far, of any deterioration of the platinum. In the section shown, F F are a pair of steel disks, bound together, but separated by the inverted thermo-junction, N, of the thermo-electric pyrometer. This arrangement permits the observation and record of retardations in the heating and cooling of F F—in other words, the determinations of the cooling curves of steel—a purpose for which the furnace has been used, thus far, more frequently than in the determination of meltingpoints. For the latter operation, however, it is also suitable.

OF all the metals that have from time to time been called the "Wonder Metal," mercury, often called quicksilver, is probably the most deserving of this designation. A wonder metal it must have been to those workers of an earlier day who named it after that Latin god of commerce and gain, characterized as the fleet messenger of the gods and the conductor of souls to the lower world. The word mercury has been used to indicate a carrier of tidings, a bearer of news, a nimble or clever person, a hawker, and a skillful thief. All of these attributes, and more, are recognizable in this metal, the technical terminology of which is "Hydragyrum," meaning water-silver, and from which the chemical symbol "Hg" is derived. Fickle in its occurrence in nature, simple in its metallurgy, illusive in captivity, it serves man in life or death, in war or peace, in commerce, science and arts, in mining, agriculture, and forestry with a versatility found in no other element.

G OLD MINING is enjoying a real revival in the West, and a considerable portion of the production is coming from small properties. The large mining companies of the world get most of the publicity, but in the last year the small gold property has often proved a more attractive field for the mining engineer looking for something to do. Old mines have been re- opened, prospects have been more closely examined, and many properties that were out of the running with the high commodity and labor costs of two or three years ago, have recently been making money for their operators. An interesting phase of this activity is the operation of so-called one-man mines. The west is dotted with these small properties, without the resources or reserves to warrant large-scale operation, but which return a living and often something over to one or two men who under- stand mining and simple methods of treatment.

DESPITE the war, the First Pan American Mining Congress, held in Santiago, Chile, Jan. 15-23, was attended by about 300 persons including the official delegates from sixteen of the American republics. The United States delegation consisted of Elmer Pehrson, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines; D. F. Hewett, of the U. S. Geological Survey; William H. Hobbs, of the Carnegie Foundation; and C. W. Wright, delegate of the Board of Economic Warfare and of the A.I.M.E. Mr. Wright was elected to head the delegation. Among the other members were Edward Steidle, of Pennsylvania State College and also an official A.I.M.E. delegate; John Huttl, of Engineering and Mining Journal; W. 0. Vanderburg, foreign mineral specialist from Lima, Peru; O. B. Hundley, of the American Cyanamid Co.; Horace Graham, of the Anglo-Chilean Nitrate Co.; and several officials and engineers from the Anaconda, Kennecott, and Bethlehem Steel companies' mines in Chile.

DUPING the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of "lime-roasting" of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,' and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art. The elimination of the sulphur-content of galena has been always the most troublesome part of the smelting-process, being both costly in the operation and wasteful of silver and lead. Previous to the introduction of the Huntington-Heberlein process at Pertusola, Italy, it was effected by a variety of methods. In the treatment of non-argentiferous galena concentrate, the smelting was done by the roast-reduction method (roasting in reverberatory furnace and smelting in blast-furnace); the roast-reaction method, applied in reverberatory furnaces; and the roast-reaction method, applied in Scotch hearths 2 Precipitation-smelting, simple, had practically gone out of use, although its reactions enter into the modern blast-furnace practice, as do also those of the roast-reaction method.

Rate expressions for the formation of two-and three-dimensional nuclei on foreign substrates are developed, taking into account previously neglected contributions to the standard Gibbs free energy of formation of critical nuclei. The temperature dependence of critical super saturation data predicted using these expressions is in accord with data for cadmium on copper and sodium on CsCl. EXPERIMENTAL data on the heterogeneous nuclea-tion of metal crystals from the vapor phase1&apos;2 exhibit the temperature dependence predicted by a nucleation rate equation derived by Pound et al.3 In their treatment, the critical nuclei are visualized according to the Volmer4 model as cap-shaped (three-dimensional). Accordingly, it seems desirable to compare these data with a nucleation rate equation which is derived on the assumption of disk-shaped (two dimensional) nuclei. Further, Lothe and Pound5 have recently shown that the standard Gibbs free energy of formation of these critical nuclei contains a contribution which has heretofore been neglected. Thus it is necessary to re-examine these nucleation data using a rate equation which contains this contribution. The van&apos;t Hoff isotherm relates n(i), the concentration of nuclei of critical size i (i = number of atoms), to nil), the concentration of adsorbed single atoms: where standard Gibbs free energy of formation of critical nuclei given by is temperature insensitive and is the bulk free energy change/volume of transformed material], T = substrate temperature and k = Boltzmann&apos;s constant. Previously,3 was determined by considering only the contributions of bulk and surface free energies in transforming i atoms from the population nil) to a cluster of i atoms. It has been shown5 that this procedure does not take into account the free energy contribution arising from the multiplicity of sites, q, where the clusters can be situated. If this contribution, -kT In q/n(l),is added to iG3 [Note that this increases n(i) by a factor q/n(l).] Since the above does not affect the remaining terms in the rate expression of Pound et al., the details are referred to their paper. The resulting nucleation rate is If the experimental AGV and T values at some common value of are employed, a plot of vs T(ln C3/l + In p&apos;) should yield a straight line of slope k/B<p and intercept . The corresponding plots for / = 1 nucleus per sq cm sec and C3 = 1018 are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for cadmium on copper1 and sodium on CsCl2 and the values of obtained therefrom are entered in Table I. It is apparent that the data yield reasonable straight lines with about the same scatter as found using the equation of Pound et al. (New Haven Meeting, February, 1909.) THE Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory is the gift of Prof. John Hays Hammond to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. Professor Hammond was graduated from this school in the class of 1876, and has always shown great interest in its welfare and progress. In 1903, he offered to build and equip for it a mining and metallurgical laboratory. This offer was gratefully accepted by the trustees; and in October of the same year the architect, W. Gedney Beatty, and the writer were employed to draw up plans for the building, which is the largest of its kind in this country. The Treasurer&apos;s report shows the total gift of Professor Hammond, including land, building, and equipment, to have been $128,741.53. This does not include $5,000 given by Professor Hammond to defray incidental expenses. IT does not seem practicable to review all the other specialized curricula that have developed in the mineral industries field in so much detail as has been given for petroleum. Nor is it easy to draw a definite line between true curricula, leading to a designated degree in the special subject, and options, which may range from the mere substitution of one or two courses for others &apos; in the final years to differences so extensive as almost to amount to separate curricula. Even to attempt to catalogue all the options that have been offered at one time or another would , require too much space. The remainder of this discussion, there- fore, will be confined to three topics which seem to be of major importance. Mining and metallurgical curricula will be covered in a later chapter. Geology The first, from the historical view, is geology in its relation to the mineral industries. Previous, chapters have made clear that in the early years of mineral industry instruction in the United States economic geology and mining engineering, so overlapped one another that men who were by training and experience economic geologists were appointed professors of mining, while men who had graduated as mining engineers sometimes developed into professors of geology. Even today men whose basic training was in- geology as a pure science, and who perhaps took a doctor&apos;s .degree in that subject, have attained such distinction in the mineral industries as to be universally accepted as "mining men," and their right to be regarded as mining engineers would not be questioned, even though &apos;they did not .take a degree in engineering. Nevertheless the distinction does exist, and has been made a concrete reality in recent years by the enactment of

A flexible, efficient, and relatively low-cost drilling and blasting operation has evolved at Texasgulf Canada, Ltd.&apos;s Kidd Creek underground mine. Located 32 km (20 miles) north of historic Timmins, Ontario, the underground operation utilizes a sublevel open stoping method developed with large-diameter blastholes. Over the years, Kidd Creek engineers have experimented with various drill-and-blast techniques, leading to the present-day practice. Continuing work is being conducted to further mechanize the blasting operation.

D. C. Ralston (U. S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—Flake mica can be beneficiated by a wider variety of methods than almost any known mineral. However, most of these methods are not recorded. It is therefore a pleasure to find a written record of another application of a new method of beneficiation. The fact that the Humphries spiral gives a concentrate containing the mica flake mixed with the slime and small grit has forced a further separation by screening, in which the finest of the flake will pass through. Fine flake has its uses and if mixed with slimes or clay is recoverable reliably only by flotation. This loss must be charged against the spiral. On the other hand, the new muscovite mica paper recently brought out by General Electric Co., can be made only with grit free flake larger than 50 mesh. It is of interest to learn from the authors whether the washing of the flake on a 50 mesh screen can take the grit content below 1 pct, to meet this new demand. Must another degritting process be used on the flake, like electrostatic treatment of the dried material? H. D. Snedden (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—When recovering mica in the spiral, gangue particles coarser than 16 mesh can be rejected more readily when operating at a high pulp density (35 pct solids) or a low volume rate (—15 gpm). A launder screen as used by Lehigh Coal Co. has proved very satisfactory to partially dewater the mica concentrate and to reject any gangue slimes it may contain. Under certain conditions mica cleaning in the spiral can be improved by reagentizing the spiral feed, the object being to insure wetting of the gangue minerals and to agglomerate or prevent wetting of the mica particles. R. B. Adair (authors&apos; reply)—The grit content of the mica recovered on Humphreys Spirals varies with the fineness of the launder screen used to clean the mica product. Normal practice has been the use of 80 mesh screen, which will produce a mica product of acceptable grit content for most purposes. By using a 50 mesh screen, and increasing the screen area per ton of feed, it is felt by the authors that a mica of 99 pct plus purity could be obtained. This statement would hold only in the case of mica feed which was well de-laminated, and free from "clay balls," (semikaclinized feldspar), which tends to follow the mica through the process.

DIATOMITE is a hydrous or opaline form of silica, commonly known as diatomaceous earth, diatomaceous silica or kieselguhr. The term "infusorial earth" has lost its original meaning and today is incorrect in view of the distinctions between diatoms and infusoria. Various locality and variety names are obsolete but some retain local significance. Moler and Celite are trade names that have become associated with diatomite products from certain deposits in Denmark and near Lompoc, California. COMPOSITION Diatomite is essentially silica with some combined water (2 to 10 pct). Frequently it contains organic matter (from traces up to over 30 pct) and varying amounts of inorganic impurities such as sand, cryptocrystalline silica, clay, volcanic ash, calcium carbonate, magnesia and soluble salts. In the natural or crude state, diatomite contains from 10 to 65 pct or more of free water. Table I gives analyses of several diatomites from deposits of different types. PROPERTIES Pure varieties, either massive or stratified, are friable and porous, of low apparent density, and somewhat chalklike in appearance. Varieties containing organic matter vary from sedimentary oozes to peatlike materials. Impure varieties may be more or less claylike, sandy, calcareous or cherty. Compacted types approach porcellanite and silicified shales. COLOR-white, cream, gray, tan, brown, greenish to nearly black. HARDNES-light-weight varieties appear 1 to 1.5 because of porosity, but microscopic particles are 4.5 to 6.5. SPECIFIC GRAVITY-1.9 to 2.35. APPARENT DENSITY---dry block form, 20 to 40 lb per cu ft; dry powder, 5 to 16 lb per cu ft. CRYSTAL SYSTEM-generally amorphous (isotropic by X-ray diffraction) but frequently showing faint cristobalite pattern.67.68,70 MELTING POINT-1400° to 1650°C. STREAK-white. LUSTER

This paper describes the analytical characteristics of Western subbituminous coal and the manner in which these characteristics apply to their use in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares these characteristics with those of typical Midwestern coal and Eastern bituminous coal. The paper also reviews in detail the design considerations that must receive attention when various blends of these three coals, or any combinations thereof, are planned to be used. This research paper describes variations in analytical and utilization characteristics when coals from different origins are blended in order to achieve a predetermined sulfur content for the purpose of predicting sulfur oxides emissions as they affect environmental regulations and the resulting alterations in utilization characteristics such blending would cause, and how such blends of coal would affect a utility-sized steam generator.

IN THE past, we have, perhaps, been somewhat careless in our furnace practice, in the use of high-grade material, lowering the production costs through demanding high-grade ores, increasing the size of units, and eliminating heat losses by collecting and returning unused heat to our furnaces. Further economies would seem to be possible through keeping out of the furnace those materials that appear to serve no useful purpose and carry with them heat that should be used in reduction operations. In the manufacture of pig iron, about three tons of inert nitrogen pass through the furnace for each ton of iron produced. This nitrogen serves no useful purpose in the chemical actions involved, but when discharged into the atmosphere it carries away a considerable quantity of heat. Can not this loss be eliminated, at least in part, through the use of more oxygen in the blast? Many metallurgical chemists, during the past 20 years, have stated that they thought it can and have urged that the plan be tried. Others have expressed doubt, not being able to visualize how more oxygen could be used in present practice; they have regarded it as impracticable, without trying to conceive of an entirely new practice based on a new reagent. That more experimental work has not been done is due to the fact that no cheap oxygen has been available, but the committee believes that there is strong reason to expect that, should a demand exist, 99 per cent. oxygen may be made at a cost not to exceed $3 per ton. The theoretical studies of the committee have indicated such marked economy by using oxygenated air in various operations that its members strongly recommend experimental work to verify the anticipated economies. The committee has developed plans for experimentally determining the effects of oxygen-enriched air on the operation of an iron, blast furnace. A furnace with a height of 30 ft. has been built and it is recommended that the plans be put in, effect as the first step in the research.
