I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at' very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. The effect of such variables as feed size, particle shape, cleavage, and hardness on the relative proportion of impact, abrasion, and chipping events in a tumbling mill is demonstrated. The concept of an average event, which is a combination of the three comminution mechanisms, is introduced. It is postulated that the average event in a particular mill determines not only the size distribution but also the energy-size reduction relationship for the comminution process. Fragmentation of particles in tumbling mills appears to result from a combination of impact, abrasion, and chipping grinding.' The relative rates of size reduction attributable to any of the basic grinding mechanisms must depend upon a number of variables, such as feed size, particle shape, hardness, and the number and kind of particles in the mill. The purpose of this paper is to show experimentally how these variables in the properties of materials affect the size distributions obtained by grinding the material's in a laboratory tumbling mill. The resulting size distributions will be intetpreted in terms of a combination of three comminution mechanisms. METHODS AND MATERIALS In this study, minerals of widely differing properties were ground either separately or as mixtures in laboratory mills using rods or balls for grinding media. The materials used include quartz, Tuolomne, limestone (99.8% CaCO3), barite, corundum, galena, pyrite, glass beads, and crushed glass. The mill used was 8 in. in diam. and 9-1/4 in. long. For the ball milling tests, 17.6 kg of steel balls (36: 7/8 in. balls, 178: 1 in. balls, and 44: 1-1/8 to 1-1/4 in. balls) were used. For the rod milling experiments, 17.6 kg of steel rods 9-1/16 in. long (25: 5/8 in., 10: 3/4 in., and 5: 7/8 in. in diam.) were used. In each test, 1 kg of solids were ground wet at 60% solids at 77 rpm. In all cases except where otherwise specified, the feed to the mill was 4 x 8 mesh material. Size distributions of the ground products were determined by a wet-dry sieving procedure with Tyler series sieves. Size distributions of mixed products containing limestone were determined by dissolving the limestone with acid and sizing the residue. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION If the size distribution of the product from a tumbling mill depends upon the relative proportion of impact and attrition (abrasion and chipping) events, altering the grinding conditions may change these proportions and consequently alter the size distribution of the product. Data to illustrate this point can be taken from Gaudin's classic 1926 paper.2 In one series of experiments, Gaudin ground quartz of different initial sizes for four hours in a laboratory ball mill with 7/8-in. balls. In Fig. 1, his data are reproduced as the cumulative fraction finer than the stated size for the following initial feed sizes: 13.3 x 9.4 mm, 6.7 x 4.7 mm, 2.6 x 1.6 mm, and 0.83 x 0.59 mm. ALLUVIAL gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river; by Paulino, a Brazilian convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, Cirubé, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Tat, and Couriége. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysée, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about $5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary between the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company,, the Dutch Guiana French Mining Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have pro-duced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of the production went through French Guiana and

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives: 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity. Since Honda and Murakamil in 1918 proposed their constitutional diagram of the carbon-free iron-tungsten system, considerable effort has been expended by several investigators in attempts to define more positively the structural features of the alloys. The existence of an intermediate phase corresponding to the formula Fe3W2 (68.7 per cent W) was proposed from evidence of a purely metallographic nature by one of the present authors2 in 1926. Since that time the identity of this phase has been confirmed by Arnfelt3 and by Takeda,4 both of whom employed X-ray methods as well as the microscope and the chemical analysis of isolated microconstituents. According to Arnfelt, Fe3W2, as crystallized from the iron-rich melts at a temperature above 1450° C., contains by analysis 68.7 per cent W. The lattice of this phase is characterized by trigonal symmetry. Arnfelt, moreover, proposed a second intermediate phase formed at some temperature between 1450" and 1000" C. by a peritectoid reaction involving Fe3W2 and the iron-rich solid solution. A melt containing 25 per cent W was cooled to 1000" C. and heated for 100 hr. The precipitated tungsten-rich constituent was separated and found by analysis to contain 62.6 per cent W. This composition agrees closely with that represented by the formula Fe2W (62.2 per cent W). Diffraction patterns from the concentrated precipitate showed a hexagonal unit cell. Takeda confirmed the data of Arnfelt regarding Fe3W2 but was unable to detect Arnfelt's second intermediate phase. While Takeda failed to describe in detail the treatments employed, he stated that in alloys containing 40 per cent W which were quenched after heating at various temperatures between 1200" and 1450" C. no evidence of the second phase (Fe2W) was observed 'either in the microstructure or in the diffraction patterns of isolated residues. He therefore considered the existence of this low-temperature hexagonal compound as disproved.

- Introductory IN 1882, The Arizona Copper Co. Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and in October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-sulphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The, sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. The average yearly production from this company's mines and reduction works from 1885 to date has been: Pounds 10 years ended 1894 6,864,902 10 years ended 1904 20,439,614 10 years ended 1914 : 32,665,905 Part of year 1915, to Sept. 12 30,206,106 4 months of 1916, to June 15,964,840 June, 1916...: ? 4,900,000 Construction on a new smelting plant was started in February, 1912, and finished in February, 1914. THAT gold ores occur in Georgia is a fact apparently not widely known outside of that state, yet in the last hundred years nearly $18,000,000 worth of gold has been mined there. The discovery of gold-hearing quartz was made in 1823 on the "Forty Acre Lot" (which now belongs to the Columbia Mining Co.), in McDuffie County, and about seven years later the first stamp mill on record was erected near there. In recent years Georgia's gold production has dwindled to an insignificant figure. However, with the increase in gold price, interest in this district has been revived, so an electrical geophysical survey was undertaken to aid in discovering new quartz veins, on a part of the Forty Acre Lot, the adjoining Hamilton mine, and the nearby Woodall property.

AMONG the curious results of the recent advance of prices in the iron trade of the United States, one of them at least is to be regarded as of great importance. I allude to the utilization of mill cinder as a cheap and almost costless substitute for high-priced iron ores in many blast furnaces, situated within easy reach of such raw material. It has been, with but few exceptions, the practice in this country, based upon tradition rather than upon authority or European precedents, to waste this material on 'account of its high proportion of silicic and phosphoric acids, although known to contain more iron than most ores, and although also known to be sometimes applied to the blast furnace in greater or less quantities without serious detriment to the iron for specific purposes. While in use to a limited extent in the Hocking Valley and Hanging Rock iron regions of Ohio for several years, its use in Western Pennsylvania has only become general of late, under the exigencies of high prices and a short supply of ore. Especially has mill cinder largely entered into the stock of furnaces attached to rolling mills in and about Pittsburgh. Under such circumstances the cinder pig has been paddled on the premises, and the malleable iron produced has been unexpectedly good. Cautiously as at first mill cinder has been applied, it is evident that the temptation to use it freely is a strong one whenever the commercial rates for high-class ores are out of proportion to the general conditions of the iron trade, as sometimes happens in this country, especially as the free use of it is apparently justified by the quality of the iron produced from this cheap and abundant material. Indeed the consumption of cinder pig has., not been wholly confined to mills using up the production of furnaces belonging to the same plant. One furnace at least on the Ohio, at Covington, for several' months has been making foundry pig from "all cinder." The iron has gone into the general trade. B RITISH COLUMBIA in its mining activities is going ahead by leaps and bounds both in development and production. Mineral production for 1925 was $61,492,242 in value as compared to $48,704,- 604 in 1924, or an increase of about 26.2 per cent. This is a new record. It is the first time in the history of mining in British Columbia that we have gone over the fifty million mark. But we have got in the habit of making new records. The year 1924, with its mineral production of almost forty-nine million was a new record. And I am confident that when the mining history of 1926 is written it will be found that we have established yet another new record and that we can report another 25 per cent increase over 1925. What is the explanation? It is not only that the world is settling down, and settling up, after the war. It is not only that in the rebuilding, the refashioning in which all nations are busily engaged, the metals that come from our mines are needed. More than anything else, at least as far as we are concerned, it is because British Columbia has the resources and the fact that the province has been fortunate in recent years in finding men with the enterprise and the vision required to push ahead the labor of their development. From the ranks of our own people in Canada we have prospectors who have faith, energy and requisite knowledge. They are combing our hills season after season and they are of the type of manhood that does not know the meaning of the word quit. More and more these men are learning the importance of the guidance furnished by geological reports, and to an ever increasing extent such reports, thanks to the valuable work of the Canadian Geological Survey, covering areas little known to man, are made available to them-but it is recognized that in the opening up of our Province, containing within itself 372,000 square miles, it is essential that we should have the cooperation of our cousins on this side of the line as well as of our fellow citizens of the Dominion and of the Mother Country.

Tars paper is a review of the principal details of cyanide practice in several of the modern plants in America, mainly during the year 1908. Two of the mills, the Goldfield Consolidated and the Vets, Colorado, are not yet prepared to give data, the former having started about Jan. 1, 1909, and the latter not yet being completed. AFTER all the chronology that has been given, what is the present status of chromium steels? For the purpose of this discussion the different types of chromium steels can be divided into three classifications-those containing relatively low , percentages of chromium, say 5 per cent or less; the medium-chromium steels containing up to about 18 or 19 per cent chromium; and the steels containing still higher percentages of chromium, and some of the special alloys. Chromium has some unique effects in steel, so it is well to make a few generalizations. The affinity of chromium for carbon is great and the metal is unique in the manger in which it supplements and enhances the effects of carbon. Chromium retards -considerably the thermal transformations on cooling and exerts an opposing influence both on the absorption and precipitation of the carbides in steel. These statements make it easy to understand the fact that chromium .steels are capable of producing a hardened product at a much slower rate of cooling than is, true of plain carbon steel, and that chromium carbide or -the mixed carbides of iron and chromium do not contribute to brittleness to as great a degree as does iron carbide.

SILICA is the main impurity in iron ore. It is intimately associated with the iron oxide, sometimes free but more often in the combined state, as a mineral silicate. Its separation and purification sometimes present difficult problems to the analyst. In the absence of any definite knowledge to the contrary, orthosilicic acid. H4SiO4, is supposed to be the only silicic acid made, all other forms, such as metasilicic acid, H2SiO3, representing different degrees of its dehydration. These acids are exceedingly weak but form the most stable compounds found in nature. They are known as the silicate minerals and are formed by the combination of the different metallic oxides

The physical constraints for the major enhanced oil recovery processes are described, followed by new estimates of cost. IN THE early summer of 1917, it became evident that the then existing sources of supply of guns and gun forgings were totally inadequate for the enormous and rapidly growing requirements of the Ordnance Department of the Army, so arrangements were made with sixteen makers of other products to take up the manufacture of guns and gun forgings. Nine of these makers were required to produce their own steel from the raw materials and convert it into rough machined gun forgings; the others finished and assembled these forgings into completed guns. In December, 1914, four of these makers of steel and rough gun forgings were instructed to manufacture the same amount of the 6-in. and 9.5-in. guns and howitzers. It, therefore, seemed practical .and profitable to assemble these makers into a small group, together with the officers of the Ordnance Department, and provide standard 'equipment in each of the four works for the production of these two types of guns. The advantages of this cooperation were immediately manifested, and there commenced an interchange of shop practice and a free discussion of facilities and methods that covered not only the equipment but the manufacturing processes.

Large deposits of titaniferous magnetite occur associated with anorthosite and gabbro in the Lake Sanford area, Essex County, New York. The ore, gabbro, and anortbosite show consanguineous relations. Anorthosite grades through gabbroic anortbosite into gabbro but is locally intruded by gabbro. Structural and petrographic evidence suggests that gabbro was differentiated from anorthosite by filter pressing. Field and laboratory study of ore occurrences indicates that an ore residuum concentrated in the gabbro through magmatic segregation' by normal crystallization and flowage. Ore occurs as bands which grade into gabbro, and also as large masses which replace anorthosite. Ore in the gabbro is finer grained and richer in ilmenite than ore in anorthosite. Introduction The Lake Sanford area lies in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, in the southeast portion of the Santanoni Quadrangle (Fig. I), and there are four ore bodies in the area immediately surrounding Lake Sanford. The area lies 30 miles by highway from the railroad at North Creek. The deposits were discovered in 1826, and from then until 1858 iron was produced in small quantities. They were idle from 1858 to 1906. Between 1906 and 1913, extensive development work was carried on. These early attempts to produce iron ore were thwarted by transportation difficulties and by the titanium content of the ore, which, ironically, has been the element responsible for the present development. In 1941 the National Lead Co., Titanium Division, developed the Sanford Hill ore body and is now producing ilmenite and magnetite concentrates.18 The Defense Plant Corporation is extending the railroad to the property from North Creek and is building a sintering plant to treat the magnetite concentrate. Investigations OF the Deposits* Early studies of the Lake Sanford titaniferous magnetite deposits were made by Emmons in 1842,l2 by Kemp, in 1897-98'0 and by Newland in 1908.22 Singewald26 and Osborne23 considered these deposits along with numerous other titaniferous magnetite deposits in 1913 and 1928, respectively. None of these reports entailed a detailed study of the ore occurrence in this area. The present study was begun in 1940. INTRODUCTION. IN a paper read by title at the Washington meeting of the Institute, May, 1905,1 discussed at considerable length the geological relations, node of occurrence, and the genesis of the lead- and zinc-ores of the Virginia-Tennessee region. The present paper treats of the purely economic phases of the zinc-ores of the district; such as methods of mining the ores, their preparation and treatment. The Albemarle county mines and plant were discussed in the paper referred to above, and will not be considered here. METHODS OF MINING. Until very recently the mining of lead- and zinc-ores in Virginia was limited wholly to the surface belt of weathering. The mode of occurrence and the character of the ores to be mined were such as to demand the employment of methods used in mining secondary concentrated ores. Accordingly, a system similar to that practiced in mining brown iron-ores was employed, being modified to meet the changed conditions. Oxidized or Soft Ores.-Up to the present time practically all the ore mined in the Virginia district has been of the oxidized or soft type;-the silicate, calamine, and the carbonate, smith-sonite; largely the former, which has been localized and concentrated at only slight depths below the surface. Because of the extreme irregularity with which the limestone weathers when stripped of the overlying residual clay, it presents a roughened surface of large and small irregular "chimneys"
