6889. Aslakson, C. I., and Swick, C. H. Gravity Observations in Peru and Colombia. Coast and Geodetic Survey,-Special Pub. 233, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C., 1943, 18 pp. (Price, 10 cents.) In accordance with the policy of cooperation among American republics, the-United States Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1941 made gravity surveys in Peru and-Colombia. The information was desirable for determining the figure of the earth for geophysical purposes and for studying the relationship between intensities of gravity and deflections of the vertical. The survey instrument was the Brown pendulum apparatus. 11 gravity stations were established in Peru and 13 in Colombia. The results obtained at these stations are given in a table covering observed gravity, theoretical gravity, and anamalies. - V. S.

"Bench-scale flotation tests play a major role in the geometallurgical process value chain. Despite their apparent simplicity, these tests pose pitfalls in terms of operation, as well as the interpretation and modelling of results. In this paper we highlight key aspects to consider in generating accurate and reproducible experimental results, and critically review some assumptions relating to the estimation of entrainment and froth recovery. We subsequently focus on first-order equations to model kinetics and propose a method that accounts more realistically for the decay in kinetics over the duration of a float, and the contributions of froth stability and hence mass pull. The method was applied to three case studies on platinum group metal (PGM) ores and matched or outperformed first-order, two-component models. Also, it allows for a deeper analysis of the integrity of the bench-scale flotation results. IntroductionGeometallurgy is a structured, multidisciplinary approach that integrates key data from the geological, mining, mineralogical, and metallurgical aspects of the value chain to construct spatial models of an ore deposit such that the overall economic benefit and sustainability of an operation can be optimized. Process geometallurgy is aimed primarily at enhancing metallurgical efficiency and plant throughput by the application of appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as supporting production planning and operational strategies to reduce the impact of highly variable ores. With flotation being the dominant concentrating process in the mineral value chain, the bench-scale flotation test is an important characterization tool – a relatively cheap, simple, and rapid way to obtain key information about the ore and its amenability to economic extraction of valuable minerals. This includes the evaluation of different ore types and the implications of mineralogical composition and texture for comminution and floatability, the effect of the grinding environment on the liberation of minerals, the electrochemical environment in the pulp (Bradshaw et al., 2006), the screening of reagents to improve floatability (Ekmekci et al., 2003), and the role of hydrodynamics in the recovery of valuables and the entrainment of gangue (Amini et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2016). It is also a critical tool in auditing the performance of a flotation plant by hot floats, paving the way for concept and feasibility studies and providing essential data on kinetics for the purposes of scale-up, optimization, and simulation of flotation circuits."

As recently as 1915, helium was available only in very small quantities at a cost equivalent to $2,500 per cubic foot. It was a laboratory curiocity, and its properties were of interest to a limited number of scientists (11).3/ During the past 30 years, however, helium has grown from a plaything of scientists to a factor of importance in the prosecution of the recent war. Navy blimps filled with nonflammable helium proved to be more than a match for German submarines operating in the Atlantic. American bombers were able to fly unheard-of distances to drop bombs on Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokahama, and other Japanese cities because they had been made lighter with magnesium, arc-welded in a helium atmosphere. The Army utilized helium-filled radio-sonde balloons to obtain vital information concerning weather conditions affecting D-day invasions and other military maneuvers.

Alcan's Guillaume-Tremblay plant, located in Jonquiere, Quebec, has been in operation since 1990. This was the first plasma dross processing plant ever built. In addition to the use of the plasma heating technology, Guillaume-Tremblay has other unique features making it a modern and efficient dross processing facility. This paper presents a general overview of the practical experience at the Guillaume-Tremblay plant. In particular, the utilization of plasma heating in industrial conditions, the metallurgical performance, the unique dross handling system, the control and information management system and the reclaiming of the by-products will be discussed. Finally, the use of the plasma process for salty dross will be addressed' briefly.

The 7-mile Flathead Tunnel, located in the central Salish Mountains of northwestern Montana, was constructed between 1966 and 1969, With the contract awarded April 19, 1966, drill and blast tunnel excavation began September 30, 1966, and was completed June 21, 1968, in 488 tunnel-driving days, Peak advance was 66 feet per day. On June 27, 1969, all tunnel concrete lining was completed. Average wall and arch concrete placing rates exceeded 1,700 cubic yards daily, with nearly half of the concrete placed during a severe winter season. Major cost savings in concrete tunnel lining were achieved through a value engineering clause in the contract. Achieving consistent results and high rates of placement in concrete lining ranked equal to ground control in overall tunnel problems. Ground control problems exceeded expectations and were of continual concern throughout excavation, One support collapse in the tunnel and one portal slide condition developed during construction. Critical surface geologic exposures were largely obscured; only a portion could be accurately projected underground, An instrumentation program to gather basic data on rock defamation near the heading face for support purposes was a pioneering effort. The Flathead Tunnel was placed in service on November 7, 1970.

Coal has been hydrogenated in Germany on a lather extensive scale for the past 20 years, but the process is new to the United States. Although pressures up to 15,000 pounds per square inch have been employed on commercial scale in the synthesis of anhydrous ammonia, and there is evidence that valves, tubing, and equipment have been developed recently up to 30,000 p.s.i. working pressure at moderately elevated temperatures for limited industrial production of plastics, such pressure ranges are unusual in American industry, and equipment designed for them is not commonly available. In the Coal Hydrogenation Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Mo., 10,000 p.s.i. operating pressures are combined with temperatures up to 1,000° F., and the materials to be processed under these conditions range from gases to mixtures of viscous liquids containing high percentages of abrasive solid particles. These service conditions presented unusual engineering problems requiring thorough investigation, Limited financial resources arid rigid time schedules inherent in the synthetic liquid fuels act often forced decisions before the best answer to a problem could be developed. Sometimes the ideal technical solution proved to be beyond the financial limitations of the demonstration-plant program.

And now we, the members of the - American Institute of Mining Engineers, meet as though we were at home in a neighboring country. For whether we meet in Canada, in England, or elsewhere, the Institute is always received as though no political or geographical divisions separated its members from those of congenial associations in the land of its host. In truth, the title which we have assumed claims for the sphere of our activities the whole American continent, regardless of such trifling details as boundary-lines. Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, accounting for 15 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions in 2005. Since methane has a much shorter atmospheric lifetime than carbon dioxide (CO2), reducing methane emissions can achieve considerable climate benefits over the next 25 years. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane and CH4 released to the atmosphere from gassy mines during coal extraction is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Methane (CH4) emissions from coal mining activities constitute approximately 6% of total global human-related methane emissions. Coal mines around the world have recognized that methane is a clean energy resource that can be captured and used productively. Coal mine methane (CMM) is currently utilized for power generation, natural gas pipeline injection, vehicle fuel, industrial process feed stocks, on-site mine boilers, mine heating, and home heating distribution systems. Upgrading mine degasification systems can often improve gas quality and create favorable project economics. The United States has been a leader in coal mine methane (CMM) recovery and use since the 1990?s. There are now 15 projects at active underground mines in the U.S., as well as 26 abandoned mine methane projects. Recovery and use projects at active underground U.S. mines reduced methane emissions by approximately 49 Billion cubic feet in 2010. In an exciting new development, a ventilation air methane (VAM) mitigation project at the CONSOL McElroy mine in West Virginia was installed by Verdeo. Operational since September 2012, this is the first commercial-scale VAM project in the U.S. and the project will reduce methane emissions by an estimated 920 MMCF/yr. As part of the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, actual data on methane emissions from underground coal mines was collected for the first time in 2011 and reported to U.S. EPA in September 2012. The data collected will help inform stakeholders, particularly the underground coal mining industry, of CMM emission sources on public and private lands. The detailed data will also shed light on the specific sources of methane from active underground coal mines and highlight project opportunities for the U.S. coal industry. The paper will cover U.S. coal mine methane emissions, U.S. CMM utilization and destruction projects, Federal policies and State incentives for CMM capture and utilization. 2011 CMM data from the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program Subpart FF will be analyzed and compared with previous U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory estimates. Other developments, including the voluntary carbon market, will be discussed.

The problems inherent in sampling low- grade deposits have long been recognized. As economic grades become lower with increasing metals prices and improvements in recovery technology then the previously difficult sampling problem has consequently become even more demanding. The breakdown of the sample process and error is illustrated by describing in the remainder of the paper some sampling practices that have been utilized on mining and exploration properties and by describing some problems that have been encountered, providing a series of cautionary tales to those involved in any aspect of mine or exploration sampling.

Much progress has been made in understanding the forward process for blast vibration simulation: that is, how to create a resultant seismogram from an empirically determined seed waveform. What has not been successfully investigated to date is the reverse process: Determining the contribution of each borehole to the resultant seismogram. It might seem that these should be two sides of the same coin, but the reverse process is much more complicated. That is because the source, geological path, and receiver contributions must be unraveled and then dissected. If that can be done, a relationship can be developed between the seismic source properties and the explosive interaction with the surrounding rock. This paper presents a first step in the unraveling process, through analysis of blast seismograms using wavelet transforms.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a influência da adição de carvão vegetal e do seu tamanho de partícula na reatividade do coque. Para isso, um carvão vegetal de eucalipto foi adicionado a um carvão médio volátil americano em três teores (3%, 5% e 8%) e em duas faixas granulométricas distintas (abaixo de 1 mm e entre 3 mm e 4 mm). O carvão individual e as misturas de carvão/carvão vegetal foram carbonizados em um forno de escala laboratorial (1 kg). A reatividade dos coques produzidos e do coque de referência foi avaliada e comparada usando análise termogravimétrica. Também foram realizadas análises morfológicas através de microscópio óptico e eletrônico, usando amostras antes e após os ensaios termogravimétricos. Baseado nos resultados, a influência da introdução de carvão vegetal na reatividade do coque foi analisada e discutida neste trabalho.

Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine û NewcrestÆs flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of AustraliaÆs steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.

The following chapters are divided into three major research tasks: Continuous Safety Monitoring Systems, Battery and Battery-charging Safety, and Mine Power System Transients. The monitoring chapter discusses the prediction of power-system failures. The battery chapter details work on battery-box stresses, battery chargers, and the elimination of electrocutions. The final chapter covers transient instrumentation, distribution transients sources and suppression, and utilization transients on mine power systems.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) FOR years past I have traveled in quest of promising mining-properties, over almost impassable mountain-trails to remote places in the mining-regions, usually, many miles from an assay-office. If, upon examination, the formation and the ore-deposit appeared favorable, a quick determination of the value of my samples was necessary, in order that I might take intelligent action with reference to the acquisition of the property. A journey with my samples to civilized regions often meant weeks of delay, and perhaps loss of opportunity. How many, under similar circumstances, have returned with their assay-results from such a journey, only to find that some audacious speculator had " optioned" the property ! True, a first payment could have been made and the chances taken on the results; but experience has taught that rich-looking ore is not of necessity valuable. Personally, I would not hazard a ten-dollar bill on any property without first determining by assay the value of the ore. To carry the usual complete assay-paraphernalia over such mountain-trails was impracticable by reason of the loss of time involved, the great expense of transportation (charged according to weight), and the fact that a few such trips would almost certainly wreck the outfit. For these reasons I began a process of elimination and substitution which finally enabled me to carry, in an ordinary 26-in. valise, sufficient apparatus and supplies for, say, 100 assays of adequate commercial accuracy. The Federal Bureau of Mines has been a leader in resource recovery research since it was founded in 1910. Until the early 19601s, most of the projects were concerned primarily with the task of extending and improving conventional technology oriented to secondary metals and minerals upgrading and processing for marketable products of highest value. By the mid-1960's with the passage of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, all resource recovery research programs were increased in scope and intensity as an effort to solve the growing number of environmental problems and the rapid depletion of domestic energy and mineral resources. Many new materials were investigated including urban refuse, manufacturing, industrial wastes, and stockyard wastes. The objective was to promote maximum recycling as the most practical answer to problems of waste disposal, pollution control, and the short supply of minerals and energy. The new research projects ranged from the conversion of animal manure and other organics to oil, to the recovery of precious and common metals from demolished aircraft and electronic scrap. This profile includes brief descriptions of many selected research projects that typify, the total spectrum of Bureau of Mines research in the important field of resource recovery.

In 1939, American industry got, off to a poor start, slowed down further during the first quarter, quickened after May, speeded up still more when war broke out again in Europe, and ended the year at a pace close to an all-time record. The average index of general business activity for the entire year (105) was well ahead of that for 1938 (86), failed to equal that of 1937 (110), and fell behind the average for 1929 (119) by a wide margin. ATHOUGH turquoise mining was, so far as we know, the first large, well-organized mining operation,' gem mining, from the Roman con-quest of Egypt until the opening of the South African pipe diamond mines some 50 years ago, was largely carried on' by individuals 01' small companies in a relatively primitive way. Now" however" gem mining does not yield in efficiency or in scale of operations to the mining of other mineral products. In 1926 the diamond mines of the world milled some 9,000,000 cu. yd. and produced 0,43 cu. yd. diamonds, a remarkable example of concentration. The Premier Diamond Mining Co. up to Oct. 31, 1927, had milled 116,455,550 loads (each of 16 cu. ft.) from which 26,-217,144 carats of diamonds" worth £29,897,971 2s, 9d., were recovered. The Burma Ruby Mines, Ltd., operating sever-al alluvial mines in Burma in 1911-12, mined and milled 1,479,845 truckloads of gemmiferous earth for 15c. per load. We of the industry can there-fore, with good grace, disclose some of the myths and also describe some of the primitive mining methods of the, dark ages of our industry. The methods, so far as I know, were not patented, and if they were, the patents have expired, so that engineers in other branches of the art are free to use them if they see fit.

A computer program has been developed by Newmont Exploration to convert mineralogic data by XRD into rock type and ore type classifications. This method has proven useful in identifying lithology from cuttings samples, where percussion drilling was an alternative to expensive core drilling. Computer printouts of rock type and ore type identifications can be generated simultaneously with mineralogic analyses, resulting in a considerable time savings in manual calculation. XRD-computer logging was first applied to the Carlin mine in north central Nevada, and later to the Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry gold deposits, southeast of the Carlin mine. Impure Paleozoic limestones of the "lower plate" Roberts Mountain Formation and the "upper plate" transitional facies have been decarbonatized to altered siltstones and shaley units along vertical faults and permeable stratiform horizons. Advanced stages of decarbonatization were accompanied by silicification. Quantitative XRD data are initially sorted into principal rock type units (limestones, siltstones, dolostones, shales) based on major mineralogic components (calcite, quartz, dolomite, clays). On the basis of relative amounts of less major constituents, descriptive subclassifications (dolomitic limestones, dolomitic siltstones, argillaceous cherts) are made. XRD lithologic data provide assistance in correlating lithologic units, and delineating favorable replacement horizons associated with gold mineralization.

This report describes the linkage of all mining sectors with all other manufacturing, services, and final demand sectors of the U.S. economy. Besides being a basic data source, it provides a framework for aggregate economic impact analysis with respect to the mining industries. The framework is an open-static input-output model specifying 48 mining industries as classified in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual for all mining activities and 76 nonmining industries which collectively exhaust, all economic activities. The 124-sector model used in this report is an expansion of the preliminary 82-industry aggregation estimates made by the Department of Commerce. In the expanded model, 48 ruining industries are substituted for the original 6. The methodology used to ascertain the industry-by-industry procurement cost estimates and product ion flows necessary to the construction and expansion of the basic 82-sector model included personal interviews, case studies of specific mining activity analysis, and published and unpublished data from the Bureau of Mines and the Census of Mineral Industries, The end products of this study are two tables arranged to show the direct purchases necessary for each industry to support the level of economic activity and the total purchases generated in each industry throughout the economy by each $1 of aggregate economic demand in 1958. The tables may he used for economic impact studies and market analysis by firms engaged in or closely associated with the mining industries. Some illustrations of their usages are presented.
