In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

ALTHOUGH the element titanium was discovered by William Gregor in 1790, over a hundred years passed before it was put to commercial use. The first commercial application of titanium was as an alloy additive to iron and steel, and the first ferroalloys were produced domestically in 1906. Titanium pigments were developed somewhat later and have been produced in the United States since 1918. The use of titaniferous material in welding-rod coatings first gained acceptance ill the mid-30's. The metal titanium has only had commercial importance since 1948; domestic production for that year was 10 tons. The relative importance of these major uses of titanium in various forms may he gaged by the consumption of titanium dioxide (Ti02) for these purposes in 1954. Of a total of 440,000 short tons of Ti02 consumed in 1954, 95 percent of the total was consumed for pigments; 2 percent for welding-rod coatings; 1 percent for non-titanium-base alloys and carbide; and 2 percent for miscellaneous uses. The titanium-metal industry is in its infancy, but it has more than doubled its output every year from 1948 to 1954, reaching 5,370 short tons in 1954.

This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

Underground contractors in the mining industry must be prepared to take a position at the forefront of innovation of equipment and work methods in order to maintain a competitive advantage over in-house operations and remain relevant. Innovative concepts such as split-feed development jumbos, high capacity trucks and loader guidance systems were implemented by contractors to stay ahead of ‘the pack’. All of these are now common across the industry.The demands of regular participation in competitive tendering coupled with aggressive fleet depreciation, means contractors tend to have more communication and opportunities to work with equipment suppliers than mine owners. Therefore, they are more likely to influence equipment design and product directions. They also have a unique opportunity to assist in trialling new concepts and technologies across a wide variety of operating conditions rather than being restricted to one mine.In addition, as a ‘guest’ on a mine site, mining contractors do not have the luxury of creating the environment for their preferred systems, rather they must have the capacity to adapt their technology to suit the offered environment at a particular mine. This leads to a pursuit of adaptive technologies that can be implemented selectively and seamlessly without excessive disturbance rather than ‘all-of-mine’ systems. These incremental innovations then become available for use across the mining industry where they can add value as ‘bolt-on systems’ to existing operations.Mining contractors, therefore, act as the bellwether for industry practices and equipment. However, in order to maintain their position they must engage industry stakeholders to deliver practical, innovative and cost-effective technologies that add value and result in an improved bottom line for all. This paper uses case study material to illustrate how the Byrnecut Group has approached innovation and how the theory of Disruptive Technology applies to underground mining innovation.CITATION:Kilkenny, D, 2017. An inducer-type pump, capable of injecting dry coal into a hydraulic transport pipeline has been developed and installed in a specially designed and fabricated slurry injector vehicle. The full scale prototype injector system can deliver up to 11 ton/min of coal into an 8-in pipeline t pressures up to 95 lb/in2. The Helical Inducer Injector operates on centrifugal principles with flow passing axially through helical pitched conical rotor. Water is delivered to the pump through an annular slot at the atmospheric pressure coal inlet. The spinning rotor maintains an air-core vortex of water which pressurizes the discharge housing. A screw feeds coal through the open inlet into this vortex. The inner radius of the vortex contracts as pressure is increased, giving a limiting maximum pressure which is proportional to the square of the rotor speed. Below this limit, flow rate, discharge pressure, und rotor speed re independent variables. The self-powered, 4 -in high slurry injector vehicle follows and receives ROM coal from a continuous miner, reduces the top size to 3-in, and delivers the sized coal to the injector feed screw for slurry formation and pumps it through a mobile hose attached to the vehicle's outby end.

Since 1922, when a brief report3 on the production and utilization of garnet was issued by the Bureau of Mines, there have been a number of interest—in developments in the technology of that mineral. Greater activity has been displayed in mining, new mills have been erected, and more attention has been paid to improvements in milling so that a more efficient and economical recovery of garnet has been possible. These activities have resulted in larger production; therefore, attempts are being made to broaden the market for garnet abrasives, and to find new uses for the unusual combination of physical properties than this mineral possesses. The writers have recently completed a field study of the occurrence, methods of mining and milling of garnet, and the manufacture and utilization of abrasive garnet products. This preliminary report indicates the most important sources of garnet, the methods by which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is utilized.Chemical and Physical Properties.The term ""garnet"" is applied to a closely related group of minerals which crystallize in the caste forms and possess similar physical properties, although their chemical composition may exhibit greater variation. The chemical composition of the garnet group may be represented by the general formula 3R"" O.R""' 203.3S102, in which R represents the bivalent elements calcium, magnesium, in the manganese state and ferrous iron, R"" represents the trivalent elements, ferric iron, aluminum and chromium in the chromie state. An account of the amorphous substitution of the different bivalent and trivalent elements, specimens whose composition may be represented by a definite formula are rare, the composition of any given specimen generally exhibits treat complexity.

[THE ORGANIC act under which Federal Bureau of Mines was established provided for the investigation of the safe use of electricity in mines. Each Congress appropriates funds for conducting this investigation. As part of this investigation, electrical apparatus used in mines is studied to determine if its operation and use might introduce a hazard. From this study, certain safety standards have been developed. These standards, established with the aid of both the manufacturer and user of such apparatus, are published in schedules, and apparatus that complies with the requirements set forth these schedules is classified as "permissible." This term is defined to designate apparatus as "completely assembled and conforming in every respect with the design formally approved by the Bureau of Mines." In the judgment of the Bureau, the manufacturers of such apparatus have adhered to certain minimum standards of safety in supplying a product that when properly used and maintained is safe for operation in mines where flammable gas or coal dust may accumulate. This work of the Bureau of Mines for increasing safety does not make it obligatory for manufacturers of mine equipment to produce only that of permissible classification. Before the effective date of the Federal Mine Safety Code,5 the Bureau sought to promote safety by recommending that mine operators install permissible equipment in gassy mines as a preventive measure against gas and dust explosions initiated by electrical equipment. For some years, the mining laws of several States have prescribed the conditions under which permissible equipment must be used. The Federal Mine Safety Code requires that ?all new electric face equipment and replacements of equipment purchased for mines where nonpermissible equipment is now being used shall be of a permissible type approved by the United States Bureau of Mines,]

"THE DICTIONARY defines Metallurgy as the ""science or art of separating metals from their ores and refining them for use"". In these days, however, such a definition is not detailed enough.The modern science of metallurgy is based on two fundamental sciences, physics .and chemistry, and is sub-divided into two major fields: Process Metallurgy and Physical Metallurgy. These fields of metallurgy are now so comprehensive and involved that even the graduate metallurgist has to specialize in one or the other.In recent years, the relatively new science or technology of non• destructive testing has also entered the industrial scene, with tremendous impact and ramifications. So much so that, certainly, no .discussion on metallurgy can be complete without including some reference to it.Obviously, one paper cannot hope to cover in detail the relationship of the whole science of metallurgy to the mining industry. Consequently, only a very brief reference will be made to the field of Process Metallurgy, our major concern being with Physical Metallurgy and Non-Destructive Testing."

The purpose of this program was threefold: (1) to identify the symptoms of poor or inadequate performance of trolley carrier phone systems; (2) to assess the root causes of performance difficulties and classify them on the basis of equipment, coupling, or transmission; (3) to propose, analyze, test, evaluate and verify means of overcoming performance difficulties. Based on interviews and discussions with knowledgeable persons, laboratory experiments, and in-mine measurements, it was determined that the major impediment to good carrier phone system performance is the extreme signal attenuation found on the trolley wire/rail largely due to the many bridging loads. Three means are identified to help overcome the performance difficulties: the low impedance trolley wire, a method of improving performance by capacitively loading the transmission line; the dedicated wire, a low-loss means of extending trolley signal coverage; the use of isolators to remove the offending bridging loads at the carrier frequency. Other subjects treated in the report are design reviews of hardware, guidelines for the use of information in the report, recommendations, and a description of a probe for measuring trolley wire current.

The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the benefits and economies to be derived by the better selection , preparation, storage , preservation and utilization of mine timber , and to give some specific information on certain wood preservatives and processes suitable for mine timber preservation . The paper is based largely upon data obtained by actual experimentation and service tests conducted by the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory , Madison, Wisconsin, on wood preservation , covering a period of many years , and upon a field survey during the past summer by one of the mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines of some of the principal mining districts of Michigan , South Dakota , Montana , and Idaho , in which he made a general ' study of mine timber in metal mines , particular attention "being given to timber decay ; the conditions under which it takes place most actively ; the measures , if any , that are being used to combat it; and, finally, the advantages that might be anticipated in the use of chemically treated timber to prevent decay and thus prolong its life .

In a consideration of the various means whereby more economical and more efficient use may be made of the fuels in the United States, the possibility of obtaining for the production of illuminating gas other and cheaper fuels than the Pennsylvania coals demands attention. For the Government, as well as for private corporations and the householder, there can be no more economical and efficient way of using some coals than through the medium of illuminating gas. In the stove, gas reduces the labor cost of heat production and lessens the drudgery of the kitchen; burned in the Welsbach mantle, it is an excellent and cheap illuminant. In addition, the coke that remains after the gas has been recovered furnishes a smokeless fuel that has about the same heating value as anthracite. Hence any investigations that will indicate how local coals through proper treatment may be substituted for the higher priced and rapidly vanishing Pennsylvania gas coals will bring about lower prices for both gas and coke and will also aid to conserve for use in metallurgical processes the coking coals of Pennsylvania and of ot,her States. The annual drain on the gas-coal resources of this country and the importance of the gas and coke industries are indicated by the fact that 8,390,129 tons of coal were carbonized in retorts in the United States in 1909. The resulting salable products from by-product ovens were 15,791,220,000 cubic feet of coal gas, 6,254,644 tons of coke, and 60,126,000 gallons of tar. The total value of all by-products was about $28,508,637.

This volume summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 25 jurisdictions of East Asia and the Pacific. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of States or Provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

The results of extensive field tests of a new and powerful method of hard rock excavation are presented in this report.* The method, known by the acronym REAM (Rapid Excavation and Mining), employs high velocity, smooth bore cannons to efficiently deliver energy to the rock and has been demonstrated for underground tunneling, drilling, surface benching, scaling, and secondary breakage in hard granitic rock at the Hope Valley Mine test site in California. Solid projectiles made from inexpensive materials such as concrete or steel, and weighing from 8 to 12 pounds, are launched by conventional high speed cannons and impact the rock at velocities of 5000 feet per second--an impact energy of about 4 million foot pounds (Figure 1). The energy applied at peak pressures of nearly 2 million psi over a period of tens of microseconds breaks down the rock by a complex mechanism of crushing, spalling, and initiation and propagation of fractures produced by the interaction of successive impacts and free surfaces. The ternary system A14C3-AIN-Al203 has been examined to determine compositions which may display desirable high-temperature refractory properties. Powder methods were employed in the synthesis of all test compositions. Forming and sintering behavior was examined and hot-pressing parameters were measured. Several properties were studied for each composition of interest in the system. The properties included hydrolysis rate in moist air, elevated temperature oxidation rate, density, softening point, tensile strength, and rupture strength. In most cases equilibrium was not achieved, and the data are representative of a nonequilibrium system. Approximately 16 separate phases have been observed in the system. Forming behavior and selected properties of five compositions of interest were compared with those of aluminum oxide and aluminum nitride. None of the compositions compared favorably. Oxidation and vaporization appear to be serious drawbacks to the use of these compositions at elevated temperatures.

THE first session was held in the small hall of the Academy of Music, on Tuesday evening, February 18th, 1879. The proceedings were opened by the reading, by President Eckley B. Coxe, of the following Address : SECONDARY TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Technical education is a subject to which both the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers have of late years given much attention, and deservedly so. We all remember the admirable address of our former President, Mr. Holley, at the Washington meeting, upon this subject, and the very interesting reunion of the two societies in Philadelphia for its discussion. The problem to the solution of which the meeting devoted its attention was, "Shall the practical education of the engineer in the mine, in the rolling-mill, in the workshop, or in the field, precede, be contemporaneous with, or follow his theoretical studies in the technical school ?" I do not propose to add anything to what was so admirably said by so many of our leading engineers on that occasion ; but I shall ask your attention to another question in technical education, which seems to me equally worthy of our consideration, and which, I am sorry to say, has as yet attracted but little attention in this country. It is, "Shall the apprentices (I call them so for the want of a better general name), who are growing up and learning their trades in and around our mines and works, and from whose ranks the master mechanics and foremen of the future must be taken-shall they be provided with some means of obtaining as much theoretical training as may be necessary to enable them properly to understand the various processes and operations that they may be called upon to superintend, and not be obliged to pick up, as best they may, here a little and there a little truth mingled with much error?" In the former case, those who have the ability and industry to avail themselves of the advantages that should be offered to them would fit themselves to become real foremen, men who would understand and appreciate the true engineer and his methods. Of late years the young men of this country who have wished to enter our profession have had great facilities offered to them for so doing ; there have been undoubtedly great improvements in the methods of instruction; and although I am very far from imagining that no further progress can be made, or is demanded, yet I feel sure that
